The FASHIONETTTA™ is a trademark of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® which exposes youth to educational, cultural, social events and displays the many talents of the participants.

The FASHIONETTTA™ is Delta Xi Omega’s signature fundraising event. Annually, we invest funds raised from the pageant back into the community to support our Educational Grant Program that awards scholarships to high school seniors in the Rowan-Salisbury Schools. Funds raised also support our community service projects.

It is with great pleasure and excitement I welcome you to the 2023 FASHIONETTA™

PAGEANT sponsored by Delta Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated®. On June 24, 2023, twelve young girls and their escorts in the Rowan County and surrounding communities are presented to family, friends and community members.

Over the past six months, we have had the opportunity to work with each of these outstanding and upcoming young girls and boys to garnish excellent citizen skills, to develop their etiquette skills, and to build new peer relationships. They have worked diligently preparing to perform their talent and preparing their fashion while learning the meaning of team work.

On behalf of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Delta Xi Omega Chapter of Salisbury, NC, I wish to thank the parents of the Fashionetta Participants and Escorts for supporting this enriching experience.

A Brief History of Delta Xi Omega Chapter

On April 19, 1947, Delta Xi Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was established at Salisbury, North Carolina by Clarissa K. Dillard, who was Regional Director of the South Atlantic Region. The charge granted by the International Conference listed the following names as charter members: Anne E. Drew, Julia B. Duncan, Permilla Flack Dunston, Marion E. Gunn, Lucille M. Satterwhite, Carrie M. Shute, Eloise M. Simpson, Tillatha M. Brooks, Beatrice Riggs Hall, and Lavolia W. Vails. These members had actively associated themselves with Alpha Xi Chapter, the undergraduate chapter at Livingstone College. However, by establishing a graduate chapter, they felt that they would better acquaint Salisbury and Rowan County with the many activities of Alpha Kappa Sorority, Inc. This indeed was a memorable and welcome occasion. Since its establishment, Delta Xi Omega has launched forward through participation in all social, civic, religious activities. The chapter has also contributed to the community through its cultural and educational endeavors. The chapter was formally introduced to Salisbury with an elaborate “Coffee Hour” in the fall of 1948.

In collaboration with the Susan G. Koman Foundation, the chapter secured a grant that provided free mammograms, blood pressure checks and health information to the community. Chapter members have partnered with Novant Health, YMCA, Cancer Society and the local nurse’s sorority (Chi Eta Phi) to give blood pressure checks, heart health and stroke seminars. Caregivers were recognized with gift baskets and a certificate. Healthy snacks were provided for Night Crawlers, an organization committed to bring light to at-risk neighborhoods through presence, praise and prayer.

In 2003, the chapter received a grant from RIF/Coca-Cola Partnership to purchase a 120 hardcover book multicultural library. This library, valued at approximately $1,700, was presented to the Miller Recreation Center’s after school program that served at-risk youth in the Rowan-Salisbury School System. The Mayor and the Salisbury City Council recognized the chapter for their contributions to the community.

Partnering with Time Warner, Livingstone College, Isenberg Elementary School and Jerusalem Baptist Church, the chapter members identified and tutored students in grades three through five who failed to meet grade level proficiency. As an incentive to achieve, using the lottery system, a laptop computer was given to four students who met the attendance requirement. Eighty-five percent of the students in the program passed the State Endof-Grade tests. To support student’s needs, the chapter donated 450 backpacks to local and area schools. Twenty-five middle school girls received leadership development skills through Emerging Young Leaders

Our environmental projects included renewing and restoring playground equipment, the picnic area and the kiosk flower bed at the Geneva I. Oglesby Community Center. The chapter donated a picnic table and playground game equipment to Kiddie Land Kindergarten. We also promoted recycling newspapers, plastic containers and cans. Delta Xi Omega members participated in the Heifer initiative, and collection of eyeglasses and cell phones. The chapter members hosted a workshop, “This is Africa: Culture, Challenges and Future” that highlighted Nigeria and Ghana.

Building economic legacy, the chapter hosted workshops on credit repair, common money mistakes, purchasing a home, financial planning, and knowing your economic worth. Other programs that the members of the chapter supported: the annual Book Fair at Livingstone College, The Arc of Rowan Christmas Festival of Trees and “Food for Thought”, a program that provides food to underserved elementary students to take home on the weekend.

To support the Excellence program targets, Delta Xi Omega members served 142 meals at Rowan Helping Ministries Shelter; recognized and patronized 14 minority businesses; 72 people attended our health fairs/seminars; donated 68 pillowcase dresses and shirts to Haiti; financially supported HBCUs; co-sponsored a free mobile mammogram unit where 24 women were served; adopted a healthcare facility; donated 56 eyeglasses and 211 pair of shoes; and served 10 students in the Signature Program, #CAP.

Kennedy Young is the daughter of Candice Johnson and Mr. & Mrs. Ralph and Franchesea Young. She is a rising 9th grade honor student at West Cabarrus High School. Kennedy enjoys and has had years of formal training in cheerleading, tennis and competitive dance over the years. She was the recipient of the Leader of the Pack Award in 2022 and participated in the Melanated Queens program. Kennedy’s escort is Adrian McRae is the son of Celia McRae and attends Rowan County Early College High School where he is a rising Junior. His hobbies include basketball and spending time with family. He currently has a 3.5 GPA, volunteers 100 hours every summer with the VA Medical Center Summer Youth program, is a member of Crosby’s Scholars and is considering being an engineer. Brynn Nicole Oliver is the daughter of Brooke Corry and Brandon Oliver. She is a rising 5th grader at Concord Lake Steam Academy. Brynn enjoys dancing, drawing and making Tik Tok videos. She has played basketball for Salisbury Parks and Rec, made the basketball team for her school for the coming school year, runs AAU Track for Concord Rockets Track Team, and participated in Triple Threat Dance and Charm. Her honors and recognition include being the top student in her class in English Language Arts (ELA)/Reading. Brynn is also a member of the Leadership Club at her school. Komari Jones

Komari Jones is thedaughter of Karisha Johnson. She is a rising 6thgrader at Hurley Elementary School, where she is an Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) student. Komari enjoys gymnastics, dance, making bracelets and baking cupcakes. She is active in her school and community. Komari currently attends Central Carolina Gymnastics for Gymnastic. Komari has played soccer for the Montclair United Soccer Club, she danced with Marie Wildey School of Dance and has volunteers at Rutgers Dental School “Give a Kid a Smile”. Komari’s club and group memberships include Montclair Youth Symphonic Ensemble Bell Choir, Newark Rutgers Pre-College Summer Academies. Before moving to North Carolina, Komari was a member of New Vision Baptist Church Children’s Choir, Dance Ministry and Youth Morning Prayer. Komari will be escorted by Kashad Hasty.
