Walkabout (périple) est le terme employé par les Aborigènes d’Australie pour décrire le système d’initiation par lequel les jeunes garçons doivent passer afin de devenir des hommes. Ce système implique un « rite de passage » relativement long qui entraîne l’enfant dans une série d’expériences destinées à le mettre en contact avec le monde spirituel et le monde physique au cours d’une circumambulation (le fait de tourner autour d’un objet ou d’un site dans un but religieux) à travers le bush. De retour, le jeune homme, une fois totalement initié, porte d’impressionnantes cicatrices chéloïdes qui sont les marques de ses ancêtres et de son totem. Il est à présent un homme, un membre à part entière de son clan.

Walkabout is the word used by the Aboriginal peoples of Australia to describe the initiation system that young boys must go through to become men. It involves a relatively long "Rite de Passage" taking the child through a series of experiences that will put him in touch with the spiritual and the physical world while on a circumambulation (walking around an object or site with a religious purpose) through the bush. The returning young man, once fully initiated, bears impressive keloid scars, which are the marks of his ancestors and totem.

He is now a Man, a full-fledged member of his clan.

In 1990 at Galerie Le Gall – Peyroulet in Paris I saw an exhibition that took my breath away — and in its own way initiated me.

En 1990, j’ai vu à la galerie parisienne Le Gall - Peyroulet une exposition qui m’a coupé le souffle, et qui à sa façon m’a initié.

It was called "Au Commencement Etait le Rêve" which in English would be something like "In the Beginning was the Dream". This was a groundbreaking event for me. It was the moment when, after 10 years of dealing, I realized that I had been missing out on something of great importance. Here were works of art so simple in design, so essential in form, so complex in interpretation and so, so perfectly beautiful. I got caught up in the originality and purity of these works-of-art, in the spirals and lines that covered these sacred objects, and began to look at Aboriginal art with newly opened eyes.

Cette exposition intitulée « Au Commencement Etait le Rêve » fut pour moi un événement fondateur. Ce fut le moment où, après 10 ans dans le milieu de l'art primitif, je me suis rendu compte que j’avais manqué quelque chose de très important. Il y avait là des œuvres d’un design simple, des formes « essentielles », des interprétations complexes et le tout d'une extraordinaire beauté. Je fus enthousiasmé par l’originalité et la pureté de ces œuvres d’art, par ces spirales et ces lignes qui recouvraient ces objets sacrés, si bien que je me suis mis à voir l’art aborigène d'un œil neuf.

Aboriginal Art is an art of Design — it is an art of perfection. For those who can see beyond the apparent simplicity, there is remarkable beauty to be found not only in the pure form but also in the treatment of surfaces and in the refined, elaborate incised and painted decorations. Made of wood, stone, shell, and all manner of animal and vegetable materials, the boomerangs, spear-throwers, bull-roarers, shields, spears and adornments are of a disconcerting simplicity — far removed from the baroque sculptural works-of-art that we appreciate from the other areas of the Pacific.

J'ai compris que l’art aborigène est un art du design. C’est un art de la perfection. Pour ceux qui parviennent à voir au-delà de son apparente simplicité, il recèle une beauté remarquable qui ne se trouve pas seulement dans la pureté des formes, mais aussi dans le traitement des surfaces et dans les décorations peintes ou incisées, tout à fait sophistiquées et raffinées. Faits de bois, de pierre, de coquillage et de tous types de matériaux animaux et végétaux, les boomerangs, les propulseurs, les rhombes, les boucliers, les lances et les ornements sont d’une simplicité déconcertante — très loin des œuvres sculpturales « baroques » que nous apprécions par ailleurs dans d’autres régions du Pacifique.

These beautiful, deceptively simple objects were recognized and sought after by many of the artists of the 20th century. Sir Jacob Epstein, Karel Kupka, André Breton, Tony Tuckson, Klaus Rinke and Jean Zuber to name but a few, were and are inspired and greatly influenced by Aboriginal Art. Through the eyes of these artists/collectors, the early art of the Australian Aborigines has gone from being but simple tools and weapons to an art equal to that of the Modern and Classical world.

Ces objets magnifiques, d'une simplicité trompeuse, ont été reconnus et recherchés par de nombreux artistes du XXe siècle. Sir Jacob Epstein, Karel Kupka, André Breton, Tony Tuckson, Klaus Rinke et Jean Zuber, pour n’en nommer que quelques uns, furent, et sont encore grandement inspirés et influencés par l’art aborigène. A travers le regard de ces artistes-collectionneurs, les objets anciens des Aborigènes, simples outils ou armes, sont devenus des œuvres d’art à part entière, à l'égal de l’art Moderne ou Classique.

This exhibition does not attempt to represent the complete artistic and material world of the Australian Aborigines. It is a compilation — one could even say accumulation — of artworks from the early cultures of Australia acquired from various old collections.

L’objectif de l’exposition n’est pas de présenter un panorama complet du monde artistique et matériel des Aborigènes d’Australie. Il s’agit d’une compilation — on pourrait même parler d’accumulation — d’œuvres provenant des cultures anciennes de l’Australie, acquises auprès de différentes collections anciennement constituées.

Due to the diligence, the controlled and self-trained eye of the collectors who brought all of these artifacts together for this exhibition, most of the pieces here are made with traditional tools and all are made in the traditional manner and for traditional use.

La perspicacité et le regard aiguisé des collectionneurs qui ont rassemblé toutes les pièces de cette exposition ont permis de sélectionner principalement des œuvres anciennes, fabriquées avec des outils traditionnels, de façon traditionnelle pour un usage traditionnel.

We often think of Aborigines, the pre-contact, indigenous people of Australia, as nomads : here today - there tomorrow gone the day after. While this is true for some, most of the linguistic groups and clans were only semi-nomadic with welldefined and well-defended territories. Certain tribes were sedentary — durably installed and moving only if forced by dwindling resources or perhaps a cataclysmic event. We also see the people of Australia as belonging to but a few tribes with little individual variation and living in a empty land; but look at the map of Aboriginal tribes at the time of European contact published in 1974 by Norman Tindale: the density is remarkable. It is thought that before the arrival of Captain Cook in 1770 there were between 400 and 600 distinct tribal groups and many more languages and dialects — today only about 20 traditional languages are still in use.

The earliest traces of human presence in Australia are currently dated at minus 40,000 to minus 65,000 years from the present.

The oldest art form found so far in Australia is rock art — natural pigment paintings on the protected walls of caves or

rock overhangs. The most recent age testing puts paintings from the Nawarla Gabarnmang shelter in the Northern Territory at 28,000 years before today. In comparison, the world famous prehistoric cave paintings at Lascaux in France are only about 17,000 years old !

Les plus anciennes traces de présence humaine en Australie remontent à une période située entre 40.000 et 65.000 ans. La plus ancienne forme artistique recensée jusqu’à présent en Australie est l’art rupestre : des pigments naturels appliqués sur les parois de grottes ou d’abris rocheux. Les examens de datation les plus récents font remonter les peintures de l’abri de Nawarla Gabarnmang (Territoire du Nord) à 28.000 ans. Par comparaison, les peintures rupestres mondialement connues de la Grotte de Lascaux en France n’ont que 17.000 ans !

Following the last major increase in sea levels, Australia has been completely isolated from other landmasses for 8,000 to 10,000 years. There has always been contact and trade back and forth across the Torres Strait in the North with the coastal New Guinea tribes and on the North and Western coasts with visiting ships from the island Indonesian and Asian subcontinent peoples but globally the Aborigines have been left to themselves for a very long time. This "closed circuit" is perhaps the reason why technological development peaked resulting in the unique cultural system which we now find so compellingly essential and opposite to our cluttered lives.

The first European contact with Australia dates to about 1606 and while for the next 164 years Western ships sailed along the coast of Terra Australis, nobody seems to have made a serious incursion until Captain Cook’s landing at Botany Bay in 1770.

Britain, having subsequently lost its American colonies in the War of Independence, was suffering from an overflow of

convicts and “undesirables” which previously had been offloaded into the New World. On 13th May 1787, the British Crown sent off the “First Fleet”, consisting of 11 ships carrying some 750 convicts and about 350 free persons including military personnel and crews on a one-way voyage that sealed the future of the Aboriginal people. This founding fleet arrived in January 1788, and transformed Australia into a gigantic continental penal colony, which took in some 160,000 transported convicts between 1788 and 1850 — these are the fathers and mothers of modern day Australia.

Si le premier contact européen avec l’Australie remonte à 1606 environ, il semble que, durant les 164 années suivantes, les vaisseaux occidentaux aient vogué le long des côtes de la Terra Australis sans que personne ne fasse d’incursion poussée dans les terres avant l’arrivée du Capitaine Cook à Botany Bay en 1770. La Grande-Bretagne, en passe de perdre ses colonies américaines, était submergée par un nombre encombrant de détenus et d’« indésirables » qui étaient jusque-là débarqués dans le Nouveau Monde. Ainsi le 13 mai 1787, la Couronne britannique envoya la « Première Flotte », composée de 11 navires transportant quelque 750 condamnés et environ 350 citoyens libres dont des militaires pour un aller simple qui scella l’avenir du peuple aborigène. Cette flotte pionnière arriva sur place en janvier 1788, et transforma l’Australie en une gigantesque colonie pénitentiaire, qui accueillit environ 160.000 condamnés entre 1788 et 1850 — les pères et les mères de l’Australie moderne.

One of the things that always enchanted me is the wonderful minimalism of Aboriginal artifacts. I call it "reduced to the maximum" meaning that less is more. All superfluous parts of the implements and their decorative elements have been reduced to the bare essentials, leaving only a supremely efficient, often multifunctional tool or weapon in lieu of a multitude of objects that could do parts of the job in various sequences but need to be carried and cared for. The neverending quest for water, food, living and hunting space, and contact with others of the same ilk brought about this reduction in masse of the things needed to sustain life.

L’une des choses qui m’a toujours enchanté dans l'art aborigène est le minimalisme magnifique des objets. Je dis souvent qu’ils sont « réduits au maximum », signifiant par là que moins égal plus. Toutes les parties superflues des objets et leurs éléments décoratifs ont été réduits au strict nécessaire, avec pour résultat des outils ou des armes focalisés sur l’efficacité, souvent multi-fonctionnels, au lieu de fabriquer une multitude d’objets qui pourraient être chacun utilisés pour différentes tâches mais devraient être entretenus et transportés.

La quête sans fin pour l’eau, la nourriture, l’espace vital, le territoire de chasse, ainsi que le contact avec les autres clans expliquent la réduction massive des éléments nécessaires à la vie.

The animist Aboriginal spiritual world is also "reduced to the maximum" — it is concentrated and contained in their very selves with a limited set of physical religious baggage. Their "cathedrals", the sacred places such as Ayers Rock (Uluru), and the Ban Ban Springs in Queensland were built by Mother Nature and not by architects and stonemasons. The spiritual world is represented by ephemeral sand drawings, bark paintings and rock art as well as by sacred objects. The inspiration is drawn from the Dreamtime, a conceptual era relating to the time of creation — moments and events beyond living memory, which shaped the physical, spiritual and moral world. The initiated men source religious knowledge and communicate with their ancestors and the spirits through the Dreamtime stories which tell of when the ancestral beings rose from the earth in animal and human forms and created the world as it now is.

Le monde spirituel aborigène, animiste, est lui aussi « réduit au maximum » — il est concentré et contenu dans leur être même, avec un nombre limité d'objets ayant trait au religieux. Leurs « cathédrales » — les lieux sacrés tels qu'Ayers Rock (Uluru), ou les Sources de Ban Ban dans le Queensland — ont été créés par la Nature même, et non par des architectes et des maçons. Le monde spirituel est représenté par des dessins éphémères sur le sable, des peintures sur écorce et rupestres, ainsi que des objets sacrés. L’inspiration est tirée du Temps du Rêve — le « Dreamtime », une ère conceptuelle liée à l’époque de la création — des moments et des événements situés audelà de la mémoire vivante, qui ont façonné le monde physique, le monde spirituel et le monde moral. Les hommes initiés y puisent le savoir religieux et communiquent avec leurs ancêtres et les esprits à travers les histoires du Temps du Rêve racontant l’époque où les êtres ancestraux ont surgi de la terre sous des formes animales et humaines et ont créé le monde tel qu’il est aujourd’hui.

Like all people living in total immersion and harmony with nature the Aboriginal people know Everything about Everything in their lives. Nothing escapes their attention, their scrutiny, their analysis, and they understand the influence their surroundings have on their livelihood. Their very existence depends upon integration into and compatibility with nature.

Aborigines move through the “bush” and across the land without disturbing it, living on it, living off it, living in it. The land is a source of survival as well as a spiritual abode. They leave but the faintest trace of their passage in the dust…

In this exhibition we have an extensive sampling of functional and ceremonial objects that are devoid of excess. The apparent simplicity of these pieces must not lead us to think that their makers are limited in scope or scale. The Aborigines are a continuous culture that reaches back at least 40,000 years and possibly much more. Actually the global Aboriginal culture is probably the oldest continuous cultural group in the more recent history of mankind. The innovative technological evolutionary process having reached a sustainable peak stabilized at some point and seems to have come to a permanent plateau with no need for improvement until the arrival of Cook and his followers caused new needs. Not only did the Aborigines use and perfect the boomerang, they also used the spear-thrower or woomera, a remarkably intelligent tool for enhancing the spears thrust and flight. With regard to Western impact several of the implements in this exhibition are carved with metal tools, usually a small iron nail flattened to form a sharp chisel and a few show signs of a direct European influence like the carved floral decoration on boomerang N° 11/37. The earliest pieces in this exhibition are probably the cylcons (N° 1) which are conical stone cylinders of unknown use that can date back to about 20,000 years before today. A more recent piece yet still historically very early is the leangle type club (N° 29) from the collection of Philip de Carteret (1733-1796). And the latest piece or most contemporary shall I say is a painted Tiwi female spear for a Pukamani mortuary ceremony (not illustrated) made in the 1940's or 50's.

Comme toutes les populations vivant en totale immersion et totale harmonie avec la nature, les Aborigènes ont une connaissance parfaite d'eux-mêmes et de leur environnement.

Rien n’échappe à leur attention, observation, analyse, et ils comprennent l’influence du milieu sur leur vie. Leur existence même dépend de leur intégration dans la nature et de leur compatibilité avec cette nature. Les Aborigènes évoluent dans le « bush » sans le perturber, ils y vivent et ils en vivent. La terre est une source de vie autant qu’un foyer spirituel. Leur passage ne laisse qu’une trace infime dans la poussière…

On trouvera dans cette exposition une large présentation d’objets fonctionnels et cérémoniels. La simplicité apparente de ces pièces ne doit pas faire penser que leurs auteurs étaient limités en termes d'ampleur ou d’intelligence. Les Aborigènes forment une culture qui se perpétue depuis au moins 40.000 ans, voire bien davantage. En fait, la culture aborigène est probablement la plus ancienne de l’ère récente de l’humanité en termes de continuité. Le processus d’évolution technologique et d’innovation a atteint son apogée à un moment donné et semble être parvenu à un plateau permanent, sans plus besoin d’amélioration jusqu’à ce que l’arrivée de Cook et ses suiveurs n'en suscite de nouveaux. Non seulement les Aborigènes ont utilisé et perfectionné le boomerang, mais

ils ont aussi employé le propulseur, ou woomera, un outil remarquablement intelligent destiné à améliorer l’envoi et le vol des lances. En ce qui concerne l’impact occidental, plusieurs des objets de cette exposition ont été sculptés à l’outil métallique, habituellement un petit clou de fer aplati pour constituer un ciseau aiguisé, et quelques-uns témoignent d’une influence européenne directe, telle la décoration florale du boomerang N° 11/37. Les pièces les plus anciennes de l’exposition sont probablement les « cylcons » (N° 1), cylindres de pierre coniques d’un usage inconnu, qui peuvent avoir 20.000 ans d’âge. La massue leangle (N° 29) est un objet plus récent bien qu’historiquement très ancien, puisqu’issu de la collection Philip de Carteret (1733-1796). Et la pièce la plus tardive ou la plus contemporaine, si je puis dire, est la lance pour femme Tiwi (non illustrée), fabriquée dans les années 1940 ou 1950 pour une cérémonie mortuaire Pukamani.

There is such a large number of object types that make up the material world of the Aboriginal cultures. There are of course other weapon types than the boomerang, such as clubs of astounding variety, shields that are used both as defensive protections as well as offensive weapons, and of course spears, which can by thrust and/or thrown by hand or with the woomera. Short stone knives were used in combat and to dress game. The bow and arrow was not known other than in the far North on the islands of the Torres Strait. For everyday life food was served on curved platters known as coolamon or directly on the flat section of the woomera and rare ladles were made of waterproofed baskets. Fishing was done with finely crafted shell hooks, spears and nets. The body ornamentation was varied, decorated and beautifully crafted with precious feathers, shells, teeth, and bone. Human hair was braided or twisted into long ropes used not only to bind things together but also as part of the ceremonial and religious context. Sheets of bark were used to fashion the walls of their dwellings and these were often painted with remarkable pictorial motifs.

Among the ceremonial and ritual objects there are bull-roarers, pointing bones, secret Kurdaitcha shoes, mourning rings and tjuringa — the sacred tablet's.

Le monde matériel des cultures aborigènes est composé d’un grand nombre de genres d’objets différents. Il existe bien sûr d’autres types d’armes que les boomerangs, tels que des massues d’une étonnante variété, et aussi des boucliers, utilisés de manière défensive aussi bien qu’offensive, et bien évidemment des lances, qui pouvaient être utilisées ou lancées à la main ou bien à l'aide d'un woomera. Des petits couteaux en pierre servaient par ailleurs pour le combat ou pour dépecer le gibier. Les arcs et les flèches n’étaient connus que dans l’extrême nord des Iles du Détroit de Torres. Pour ce qui est de la vie quotidienne, la nourriture était servie dans des plateaux incurvés appelés coolamon ou directement sur la partie plate des woomera, et les rares louches étaient composées de paniers étanchéifiés avec de la résine. La pêche se faisait à l’aide d’hameçons, de lances et de filets finement réalisés.

L’ornementation corporelle était variée, comprenant des éléments superbement confectionnés et décorés avec des plumes, des coquillages, des dents ou encore des os. Les cheveux humains étaient tressés ou torsadés pour former de longues cordelettes, utilisées pour attacher divers éléments, mais aussi dans des contextes cérémoniels ou religieux. Des feuilles d'écorces, parfois ornées de peintures, servaient à la confection des habitations. Parmi les objets cérémoniels et rituels, on peut mentionner les rhombes, les os à pointer, les chaussures secrètes Kurdaitcha, les anneaux de deuil et les tjuringa (tablettes sacrées).

Most of the pieces in this exhibition were field-collected in the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century — an era during which the traditional Aboriginal life-style continued yet struggled to survive. Rifles and shotguns replaced boomerangs and clubs. Shields were of no use against firearms. Steel knives and axes replaced flaked and ground stone blades.

Alcohol was introduced and Christianity became the religious norm. The administration parked the Aborigines in reservations and settlements restricting their capacity to roam and changing their diet. After a long period of denigration and neglect by non-indigenous Australians the traditional and sacred art forms are now incorporated into commercially viable paintings and sculptures offered in art galleries around the world. Paintings

by Aboriginal artists made but a few years ago in the settlements sell for up to hundreds of thousands of euros on the art market and throwing the boomerang is a worldwide sport with international associations hoping for a spot in future Olympic games…It’s a strange world we live in !

La majorité des pièces de cette exposition a été collectée sur le terrain au XIXe siècle et durant la première moitié du XXe — période au cours de laquelle les Aborigènes luttaient pour perpétuer leur mode de vie. Les fusils remplacèrent peu à peu les boomerangs et les massues, et les boucliers n’étaient bien sûr plus d’aucune utilité contre les armes à feu. Les couteaux et les haches en acier prirent la place des lames de pierre. L’alcool fut introduit et le Christianisme devint la norme en termes de religion. L’administration australienne parqua les Aborigènes dans des réserves et des camps, restreignant ainsi leur liberté de mouvement et bouleversant leur régime alimentaire. Après une longue période de dénigrement et d’oubli de la part des Australiens non aborigènes les formes artistiques traditionnelles et sacrées sont aujourd’hui incorporées aux peintures et sculptures commercialement viables proposées dans des galeries d’art du monde entier. Des peintures d’artistes aborigènes réalisées il y a seulement quelques années dans les réserves se vendent à présent pour des centaines de milliers d’euros sur le marché de l’art mondial, et le lancer de boomerang est devenu un sport international dont les fédérations de par le monde espèrent qu’il sera un jour sport olympique… Nous vivons dans un monde décidément bien étrange !

1) A prehistoric sacred object or “cylcon“. The word cylcon is composed of the two descriptive terms cylinder & cone. No-one knows the function of these enigmatic stones which are mostly found in New South Wales, and usually have several incised lines or bands. They exist in both sandstone and a harder quartzite. They are tentatively dated to around minus 20,000 years before the present which puts them in the pre-neolithic period yet they are ground to a smooth surface. 3) A bark painting depicting a long necked turtle (possibly Chelodina longicollis). This painting once decorated the inner walls of a bark hut in a remote area of Western Arnhem Land.

Totemic images like the turtle, crocodile, kangaroo or fish were often painted directly on the inside panels of the eucalyptus bark huts and shelters the Aboriginals erected during their nomadic peregrinations. Collected in the field in 1956 by Dorothy Bennett - her typed label on the rear reads "This bark painting used to form part of the walls of a wet weather bark hut in the bush about 60 miles from Oenpelli. Large sheets of stringybark were bent over a central pole placed horizontally on two forked sticks, and the family sheltered in these dwellings, usually on a raised wooden platform." Dorothy Bennett was a renowned pioneer, along with the legendary James Davidson in collecting and bringing aboriginal artwork to the public. Works from Bennett’s collection, as from that of Davidson, found their way into many important early collections of aboriginal art, including the Australian State collections.

The ten oldest recorded bark paintings are in the collections of the Macleay Museum, University of Sydney and were collected between 1838 and 1878. They appear to be inner panels from bark shelters.

The Boomerang The boomerang, the most notable emblem of Australia - is not specific to its aboriginal cultures. The boomerang is actually a weapon for hunting and fighting that has been used almost all over the world. The curved stick was thrown to bring down birds and animals and to kill or at least maim the enemy in battle.

A wood boomerang used about nine thousand years ago has been found in Florida. Another, in mammoth ivory, and even older at about twenty three thousand years of age has been discovered in a cave in Poland.

They were used in Egypt before and during the reign of the Pharaohs and in many of the cultures of the Fertile Crescent and Southern Europe as well as throughout the East Asian subcontinent. Boomerangs were still being used in the early 20th century by the Hopi Indians of the South West USA. But to return to the Australian boomerang we have to travel back to 1688 when William Dampier reached the West coast of Australia. He is the first European to record the existence of the weapon "made of wood and rudely shaped somewhat like a cutlass".

Basically there are two main types of boomerang : those that are thrown and those that never leave the hand but are used as clubs.

The thrown boomerang is intended to hit its target with the sharp cutting edge (or point) and stun, wound or kill. There are certain types of ceremonial boomerangs that are thrown only for effect and of course there is the returning boomerang which, if it hits its target does not return, as it looses its inertia on impact and falls to the ground.

The larger boomerangs were used in combat and functioned like clubs — inflicting crushing, bone breaking blows to the enemy and possibly used also in hunting large animals like kangaroos or emu. Some rare examples were also used to kill fish !

Boomerangs vary in size from small thin throwing ones that barely reach 30 centimeters in length to monster clubs of over 140 cm. They have a distinctive form that is essential to their function and which varies slightly due to local typologies and developments.

Why the boomerang flies is best described by Dr Stan Florek, the Database Manager at the Australian Museum in Sydney (http://australianmuseum.net.au) : "While most of us would imagine that a boomerang's curve is essential for its flying properties, less well-known is that the surface shape of a boomerang's arms are just as important. The main technological secret of the boomerang is not its curve, but the surface shape of its arms. The airplane's wing provides a close analogy. The top surface is slightly convex while the underside is nearly flat. When a wing of this shape is exposed to a strong air current the airflow creates a pocket of low pressure above the wing, and a pocket of high pressure below it. These forces respectively pull and push the wing upwards. If the airflow is fast enough the wing will be lifted up and held in the current. An airplane creates this critical lifting force by gaining speed on a runway. The boomerang is hurled into the air with an initial speed of about 100km per hour. Unlike an engine-driven airplane, a boomerang relies on another strategy to increase the speed of airflow against its arms. This strategy is rotation, usually 8-11 times per second. Even if the forward motion of the boomerang slows down, the speed of rotation is often sufficient to hold it in the air. The spinning motion (gyration) is vital to a boomerang's performance. The curve, the most striking and distinct feature of the boomerang, allows for this swift rotation. The boomerang's curve prevents it from rolling, maximizes its speed of rotation and ensures that its central point of rotation stays fixed in one place."

"The flying ability of a boomerang is achieved by balancing its main physical properties such as size, weight, curvature, thickness and convexity of the top surface. For the hand-thrown wooden boomerang, the total length should not be much more than one meter, the weight best kept under half a kilo and the thickness not much beyond one centimeter. If the boomerang is too large, too heavy or too thick, it will fly poorly. Even minor changes to the convexity of the surface or curvature of the form can have a visible impact on the boomerang's flight."

Le Boomerang Le boomerang, emblème le plus notable d’Australie, n’est pas spécifique aux cultures aborigènes. Cette arme destinée à la chasse et au combat a en fait été utilisée presque partout dans le monde. Ces bâtons incurvés étaient lancés pour abattre des oiseaux et autres animaux, et pour tuer ou du moins blesser les ennemis au combat.

Un boomerang vieux d’environ 9.000 ans a été retrouvé en Floride. Un autre, en ivoire de mammouth, utilisé il y a environ 23.000 ans, a été découvert dans une grotte en Pologne. Le boomerang était utilisé en Egypte avant et pendant le règne des Pharaons, ainsi que dans de nombreuses cultures du Croissant Fertile, ou encore en Europe du Sud et dans le Sud-Est Asiatique. Il était encore en usage au début du XXe siècle chez les Indiens Hopi du Sud-Ouest des Etats-Unis.

Mais pour revenir au boomerang australien, il nous faut remonter à l’année 1688, lorsque William Dampier accosta sur la côte occidentale de l’Australie. Il fut le premier Européen à retranscrire l’existence de cette arme « faite de bois et grossièrement façonnée à la façon d’une sorte de coutelas ».

Il existe deux types fondamentaux de boomerangs : ceux qui sont lancés et ceux qui sont employés comme des massues.

Le boomerang lancé a pour fonction de frapper sa cible avec le côté tranchant (ou pointu) pour étourdir, blesser ou tuer.

Certains types de boomerangs cérémoniels ne sont lancés que pour le rituel. Et il y a bien sûr le boomerang qui revient : celui-ci ne revient pas s’il touche sa cible puisqu’il perd l’inertie au contact et tombe à terre. Les plus grands boomerangs étaient utilisés au combat comme des massues — ils permettaient de frapper, de briser les os des ennemis et peut-être ceux de gros animaux chassés tels que les kangourous ou les émeus. Quelques rares exemples servaient également à tuer des poissons !

La taille des boomerangs est variable, les petits boomerangs à lancer atteignant parfois à peine 30 centimètres de long, les plus grands pouvant dépasser les 140 cm. Ils ont une forme distincte essentielle à leur fonction, qui varie légèrement selon la typologie et les développements locaux.

Le Dr. Stan Florek, directeur du centre de ressources de l’Australian Museum de Sydney donne une excellente description du vol du boomerang (http://australianmuseum.net.au) : « Tandis que la plupart d’entre nous pense que la courbure du boomerang est essentielle pour ses propriétés de vol, peu de gens savent que la forme de la surface de son bras est tout aussi importante. Le principal secret technologique du boomerang n’est pas sa courbure, mais la forme de la surface de son bras. L’aile d’un avion fournit une analogie éclairante. La surface supérieure est légèrement convexe tandis que la surface inférieure est presque plate. Lorsqu’une aile de cette forme est exposée à un courant d’air puissant, l’air crée une poche de basse pression au-dessus de l’aile, et une poche de haute pression au-dessous. Ces forces tirent et poussent respectivement l’aile vers le haut. Si le courant d’air est assez puissant, l’aile est soulevée et maintenue dans l’air. Un avion crée sa force de soulèvement critique en gagnant de la vitesse sur une piste. Le boomerang, quant à lui, est soulevé dans l’air avec une force initiale d’environ 100 km/h. Contrairement à l’avion, qui est tracté par un moteur, le boomerang utilise une autre stratégie pour augmenter la vitesse de l’air sur son bras. Cette stratégie est la rotation, habituellement 8 à 11 fois par seconde. Même si le mouvement vers l’avant du boomerang ralentit, la vitesse de rotation est souvent suffisante pour le maintenir dans l’air. Le mouvement giratoire (giration) est vital pour la performance du boomerang. C’est la courbure, caractéristique la plus frappante et distincte du boomerang, qui permet cette rotation : elle empêche le boomerang de vriller, maximise sa vitesse de rotation et assure que son point central de rotation demeure fixé en un seul point. » « La capacité de vol d’un boomerang est assurée par l’équilibre entre ses principales propriétés physiques telles que la taille, l’incurvation, l’épaisseur et la convexité de la surface supérieure. Pour le boomerang à lancer en bois, la longueur totale ne doit pas excéder un mètre environ, le poids doit être inférieur à un demi kilo, et l’épaisseur ne doit pas dépasser le centimètre de trop. Si le boomerang est trop grand, trop lourd ou trop épais, son vol sera de piètre qualité. Même des changements mineurs quant à la convexité de la surface ou à l’incurvation de la forme peuvent avoir un impact visible sur son vol. »

29) A fighting club in the form of a pickaxe. This type of weapon, known as leangle, was much feared as the curved point could reach far behind the opponent’s shield. Leangle is a vernacular name that comes from the Western and Central Victoria language groups. Possibly Murray River, Western Victoria (Philip Jones suggests that “...it would equally be a marpangye, from a region extending from the Lower Murray River in South Australia to the Victorian border”). Wood with a fine aged patina and traces of fire-branded decor. 67,5 x 22 x 3,4 cm. 18th/19th century or earlier (C-14 test FO-08-42-01-C-14 : 145 +/40 BP (1765 – 1845 AD). There is a 26,3 % possibility that it dates from as early as 1663 to 1742 AD). From the collection of Philip de Carteret (1733/1796) of Trinity Manor, Jersey. By descent through the family.

In 1764 Philip de Carteret, as First Lieutenant of the Tamar, a 14gun sloop under the command of Captain John Byron, embarked on his first circumnavigation and voyage of exploration to the South Pacific, which ended in 1766. Upon his return to England he was named Captain and immediately given command of the Swallow, consort to the Dolphin under the command of Samuel Wallis with orders to again explore the Pacific in search of unclaimed territories. The two ships parted shortly after entering the Strait of Magellan. Sailing the South Pacific on his own, Carteret discovered Pitcairn Island, and the Carteret Islands off the coast of New Guinea, as well as charting the islands and passageways of the Bismarck Archipelago. He returned to England in March 1769. He later fought in the American War of Independence and retired as Rear Admiral of the Royal Navy. There is no information on how or where he acquired this leangle club. It was sold several years ago at auction along with a New Caledonian war club bearing a very early label.

En 1764, Philip de Carteret, Premier Lieutenant du sloop Tamar – navire de 14 canons commandé par le Capitaine John Byron –, appareilla pour sa première circumnavigation, un voyage d’exploration vers le Pacifique Sud qui devait s’achever en 1766. De retour en Angleterre, il fut élevé au grade de Capitaine et immédiatement nommé aux commandes du Swallow. Il prend la mer accompagné du Dolphin, commandé par Samuel Wallis, avec pour ordre d’explorer plus avant le Pacifique à la recherche de territoires dont la souveraineté n’aurait pas encore été revendiquée. Les deux navires se séparèrent peu après avoir pénétré le Détroit de Magellan. Navigant seul dans le Pacifique, Carteret découvrit l’Ile Pitcairn ainsi que les Iles Carteret au large des côtes de la NouvelleGuinée. Il effectua une cartographie des îles et des passages vers la NouvelleIrlande, avant de retourner en Angleterre en mars 1769. Plus tard, il prit part à la Guerre d’Indépendance américaine et prit sa retraite au grade de Contre-amiral de la Royal Navy. Aucune information ne permet de préciser quand et comment il acquit la massue leangle mais cette dernière est passée il y a plusieurs années en vente aux enchères avec une massue de Nouvelle-Calédonie dotée d’une très ancienne étiquette.

31/103) This unusual, and strangely shaped club seems to be a one-off, and is probably a ceremonial implement rather than a functional weapon. Not only is the flat discoid head set perpendicular to the flattened, crooked shaft resulting in an unpractical form but the piece is carved of a very light wood precluding its use as a contusional weapon. It shows wear and age and bears traces of pigment and an old blank paper label. Undefined location. 84 cm 32/104) A very rare, double-ended, multifunctional implement, which can be used as a carrying-pole, a club or staff, as well as a pestle for pounding food and pigments. 33/105) This club is painted with the busts (head and shoulders) of three grimacing, oval-eyed people, equidistant around the top section and various undefined forms on the shaft. These images are definitely of Torres Strait style with their wide, oval, white eyes and black central pupils. When searching through the literature on Torres material culture it is interesting to see how many items are designated as Torres - because they are collected there - although obviously of a definite foreign origin as is this Mainland club (probably Northern Queensland) painted with Torres style ornamentation. 34/101) One of the few known clubs from the Murray and Darling Rivers area with two human figures incorporated into the geometric motif. The meandering sinusoidal lines intersect and conjoin with the splayed figures. These anthropomorphic representations are remarkably animated and are presented in opposition to each other almost as if in mirror image. 49) A bull-roarer (rhombus) which was possibly recycled from a tjuringa. This is an archaic musical instrument which is swung in circles producing a low-tone humming sound which represents the voice of spirits from the Dreamtime such as the Rainbow Serpent.

The bone is pointed at the victim and a curse is uttered provoking an unreasonable fear that will usually end in death by unknown cause. This is a p s y c h o s o m a t i c p h e n o m e n o n t h a t w o r k s t h ro u g h indoctrination and instilled belief. Probably Arunta people, Central Desert. Bone, spinifex resin and white animal hair.

58) Os à pointer magique, utilisé lors d’un rituel destiné à infliger la maladie et la mort. L’os était pointé en direction de la victime et une malédiction prononcée. La victime, ayant pris connaissance de la chose, était frappée d’un tel effroi qu’elle succombait à une mort quasi-certaine de cause inconnue. Il s’agit là d’un phénomène psychosomatique provoqué par l’endoctrinement et l’instillation de croyances surnaturelles. Probablement population Arunta, Désert central. Os, résine de spinifex et poils blancs d’origine animale. 23,5 cm (sans les poils).

A) The head of a caribou, which is possibly part of a composite mask or perhaps an ornamental “applique“ for a shaman’s coat with the attachment point placed where the ear would be. Ipiutak culture (?), Point Hope area, Alaska. Fossil walrus tusk. 5,1 cm. c. 100 - 600 AD. The caribou migration routes run through the known Ipiutak cultural area on the Northern shores of Point Hope and their summer calving nurseries are spread widely across the area. The caribou was obviously an important part of the food chain for this early culture about which almost nothing is recorded. The unusual pitted and corroded surface of the material is favorably comparable to the surfaces of other know Ipiutak objects notably the ivory sea-otter effigy and the composite walrus tusk funeral mask in the the American Museum of Natural History, New York (N°60.1.7580a & 60.1.7713).

A) Tête de caribou. Cet objet faisait peut-être partie d’un masque composite, ou bien il s’agissait d’un ornement en applique sur une veste de chamane, fixé par le petit orifice situé au niveau de l’oreille de l’animal. Culture Ipiutak (?), région de Point Hope, Alaska. Défense de morse fossilisée. 5,1 cm. C. 100-600 ap. J.C. Les routes de migration des caribous traversent l’aire culturelle Ipiutak sur les rives septentrionales de Point Hope, et leurs zones de reproduction s’étendent sur toute la région. Le caribou constituait indubitablement une part importante de la chaine alimentaire de cette culture ancienne à propos de laquelle il existe très peu d’informations. La surface inhabituellement creusée et corrodée de la matière se compare favorablement à celle d'autres objets Ipiutak recensés, notamment l’effigie de loutre de mer et le masque composite en défense de morse conservés dans les collections du American Museum of Natural History de New York (N° 60.1.7580a & 60.1.7713).

B) A section of fossil walrus tusk engraved with a remarkable battle scene showing two men attacking a surrounded victim. The warrior on the left is using a composite bow to shoot an arrow at the central, headless figure who is also being attacked by the knife wielding warrior on the right. All three are probably wearing body armor made of walrus-tusk or seal-rib slats. Thule culture. c. 1000 - 1600 AD. 17,8 CM

B) Section de défense de morse fossilisée ornée d’une remarquable scène de combat montrant deux hommes en attaquant un troisième. Le guerrier sur la gauche est armé d’un arc composite et tire une flèche vers la figure centrale dénuée de tête qui est également attaquée par l’autre guerrier sur la droite, armé quant à lui d’un couteau. C) A rare “madonna & child“ effigy which can be interpreted as the large figure of a hunter with a small effigy of a dead seal. However, it is more likely to represent a version of the “Bear Mother“ myth; the story of a woman who gives birth to a bear, and is then consumed by the animal as she breast feeds it.
