Welcome to AJET Connect, a new monthly magazine produced for JETs, by JETs. This Tokyo Special edition contains useful information to help you survive your first month in Japan, as well as handy information for your time here in Tokyo. Over the next year we will be calling on you, the JET community, to get involved with this publication. AJET CHAIR

Well, you’re finally here! For some of you this is your first time in Japan, but for others, you’ve been here before on homestays or study abroad programs. Either way, I can promise you that you’re in for a new experience. Living and working in Japan comes with a variety of challenges - some good, some bad...but all memorable! I can remember 4 years ago, sitting where you are feeling the excitement, tension, & apprehension all at once. If I could give you one piece of advice as you begin your personal journey it would be this: live every moment of this experience to the fullest! The Japanese have a saying I’ve grown to love: ichigo ichie. It can be used in many situations but the essence is that every moment, encounter, or experience only happens once, and you should treasure it because it will never return. When you look back on your JET experience, I truly hope that you will have no regrets, and feel that you lived every moment with the spirit of ichigo ichie in your heart. For if you do, I have no doubt that you will look back on this time with a fondness, and your time on JET will hold a special place in your memory. National AJET is here to support you in all your endeavors while in Japan. We’ve worked very hard to make sure everything you’ll ever need can be easily accessed at ajet.net . やっと日本に着きましたね！皆さんの中には、来日は今回が初めてだという方もいれば、以前にホームステイや留学で日本に来たことがあるという方もいると思います。どちらにしても、新たな経験がこの先に待ち受けていることは確かです。日本で暮らし、働いている中で様々な課題が出てくるでしょう。時には困難にぶつかり、時には喜びが訪れ、そしてその一つひとつが胸に刻まれていくに違いありません。4年前に皆さんと同じ所に座って、期待と緊張と心配がいっせいに沸いてきた私の姿が、今でもはっきりと思い出されます。それぞれの旅路に歩み出す皆さんに一つだけ助言ができるとすればそれは、これからの時間を一瞬、一瞬、精いっぱい生きていくべきだということです。日本語には「一期一会」という、私が大変気に入った言葉があります。様々な場面で用いられる語ですが、それには「ありとあらゆる瞬間、出逢い、経験は一度切りで、二度と帰らないから大切にすべきだ」という意味合いがあります。いつの日にか、JETプログラムの参加を振り返ってみると、後悔のないように一期一会の心で一瞬一瞬を生きていたとあなたが言い切れることを祈っています。そうしておけば、JETプログラムの日々が心に残り、懐かしい思い出となるでしょう。全国JETプログラム参加者の会は、皆さんの在日生活やあらゆる努力を支援するための会なのです。公式ホームページ(http://ajet.net)に掲載している役立つ情報が利用しやすいように努めています。ぜひご利用ください。また、一個人として、皆さんの力になれるようなことがあったら、 chair@ajet.netまで遠慮なくご連絡ください。皆さんのご多幸を祈っています。「一期一会」 JETプログラム参加者の会会長クック・マシュー

Get Connected How can I get the internet at my new home? Can I get English tech support for my computer? Where can I find Japanese study resources? Can I subscribe to an English language newspaper? What is the cheapest way to travel during the holidays?

National AJET is an association for JETs that has been around since the programme began, 25 years ago. JETs elected by JETs for the 18 member national council of representatives work to provide you with a variety of Resources; including news, teaching tools, and ways to develop professionally. AJET connects you to a Community that you can take part in through events, contests, and communication with other JETs. On a professional level, the representatives conduct bi-annual research and Voice issues and concerns close to your lives to the highest levels of the Japanese ministries. The invaluable resources that are found on ajet.net will give you all the tools you’ll need as a JET Programme participant. Not only for your time on JET, but also for your career and your Life After JET.

Whether you want accreditation for teaching, or just want to find ways to develop your Japanese language skills, you’ll find the key at ajet.net .

AJET is you. Your voice is a call to action. Twice a year, AJET conducts online surveys on issues important to JETs about your experience while in Japan. The national council then compiles that information into detailed reports to convey to the government ministries and CLAIR. The national council then meets with CLAIR, MEXT, MOFA, and MIC to discuss the reports and exchange opinions on the JET Programme’s management. This is how we help to adjust the programme in the future to best fit the concerns and needs of all JETs. These meetings have had - and continue to have - a significant impact on the programme and, therefore, your life in Japan. So what’s important to you? Let your voice be heard!

AJET - JETプログラム参加者の会 JET プログラム参加者の会（AJET）は、JETプログラムの現役参加者のための自主支援組織であり、JETプログラムの開始年に発足しました。全国の参加者により選出された全国役員会の18名は、皆さんに最新情報、教材など、専門的能力の開発のために様々なresourceを提供しています。また、AJETでは、イベント、コンテスト、JET参加者間のコミュニケーションを通して、皆さんがJET内のcommunityに参加しやすくなるように努力しています。更に、役員会は年 2回の研究を行うことで、JETプログラム参加者のvoiceとなって、皆さんの生活に係わる問題や皆さんの懸念をまとめ、総務省、外務省、文部科学省及び財団法人自治体国際化協会（CLAIR）に対して報告します。このように、AJETは皆さん一人ひとりの期待に応えるように尽力しています。FacebookやTwitterでフォローしていただくと、リアルタイムでAJETの活動の最新情報が見られます。また、公式ホームページ（ajet.net）には、様々な役立つ内容が満載です！ぜひご覧ください。

Community 地域と全国のつながり本会の公式ホームページに接続していただくと、同じ考え方を持った人や同好の士と交流できる専門部会やBBS、その他にも様々な共有空間につながることができます。このように、JET プログラム参加者からなるcommunityに参加いただけます。職場でトラブルが起きたとき、カルチャーショックで溜まったストレスや苛立ちを、似た様な経験をしてきた人に打ち明けたいとき、誰か耳を傾けてくれる話し相手が欲しいときは、AJET により運営されているPeer Support Groupにお電話ください。毎日、20:00～翌朝7:00まで相談を受け付けています。日本では見るもの、やることが多過ぎて、なかなか全部はできないものです。そこで、本会では日本中のイベントのリストである総合イベント案内を提供しているので、「見に行きたい！」、「やってみたい！」というものを、前もって調べておいて、行動することが可能です。日本の祭典からAJET主催のイベントまで、この案内ガイドをぜひご参考にしてください！ JET プログラムの目標と奉仕活動は両立するものです。私達、JETプログラム参加者は、一人ひとりの住んでいる地域で草の根国際交流に携わるために日本に来たのです。他者に自分自身を与えることによって、母国の文化の良いところを見せることができます。AJETの案内・紹介を通して、好きなだけ、ボランティア活動に関与することができます。

AJET では、JETプログラム参加者の日本での勤務・生活に関する様々な事柄を調べるため、インターネット上のアンケートを定期的に実施しています。全国役員は、アンケートによって集めた情報を報告書にまとめ、年2回東京でCLAIR及びJETプログラムの実施機関である外務省・外務省・文部科学省の3省に対して発表を行います。また、そこでJETプログラムの実態及び運営についての意見交換も行っています。この報告についての意見交換は、JETプログラムをその参加者一人ひとりの要望に応えられるような事業にする上で最も有意義な活動の一つなのです。意見交換会議は今までJETプログラムに大きな影響を及ぼしてきました。ということは、意見交換会議は皆さんの日本での生活にも、大いに影響を及ぼしているのです。そこで、皆さんの意見や調査についての提案をぜひ聞かせていただきたいと思います。皆さんのvoiceを寄せてください。

役員の選任毎年2月にインターネット上で投票が実施され、JETプログラム参加者を代表するAJETの役員が選任されます。AJET会員一人ひとりにインターネット上の投票権があるので、ぜひ投票をお願いします。また、JETプログラム参加者の積極的な立候補もお待ちしています。 AJET Voice（voice.ajet.net）では、皆さんに寄稿していただいています。 AJET Voiceは、皆さんの身近の出来事を広く発信する場です。ここでは、JETプログラム参加者が自分の事業や実績を宣伝するスペースを設置しています。また、イベント案内やニュースを載せたり、他県の動きやイベントについて知ったりすることもできます。県のAJET支部の広報とホームページへも接続できます。秘密にしないで、マイクに近付いて、voiceをあげましょう。

TOHOKU

Those of you joining The JET Programme in 2011 have already demonstrated an admirable commitment to making contributions to international exchange. We as JETs are given a unique opportunity to experience life abroad, enriching our own lives and the lives of those we encounter. National AJET is firmly dedicated to providing ways for us all to give back to the country that has given so many of us this opportunity. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of the victims of the March 2011 Tohoku tsunami, including two JET Programme participants, Monty Dickinson and Taylor Anderson. May our efforts as we rebuild honor their memories, and those of the thousands of victims all over Japan. On the adjacent page, Taylor’s family has been gracious enough to offer a letter to welcome you into this new experience. In the following section, you will find information about getting involved with initiatives ranging from your own community, to the reconstruction still under way in Tohoku. Our hope is that this information will help shed light on the extraordinary efforts of JETs, both past and present, and serve as inspiration for your future endeavors.

JET プログラムに参加することで、皆さんは既に国際交流の推進に寄与する強い意志を示しています。私達はJETプログラム参加者として、海外での暮らしを経験し、自分の生活を豊かなものにすると共に、出会った人々の生活をも豊かにする絶好の機会を与えてもらっているのです。全国JETプログラム参加者の会では、数多くの参加者にこんな機会を与えてくれたこの国に対するお返しをする方法を、皆さんに提供しています。 JET プログラム参加者であった、ディキンソン・モンティーさんとアンダーソン・テイラーさんをはじめとする東日本大震災の犠牲者の御冥福を祈ると共に、亡くなられた全ての方々の御遺族や友人の方々に心よりお悔やみを申し上げます。私達は今後とも被災地の復旧を支援することで、お亡くなりになったJETプログラム参加者同士２名及び全ての犠牲者に心から追悼の意を表したいと思っています。次のページには、テイラーさんの御家族から頂いた、皆さんへの歓迎の辞を載せてあります。また、次のセクションでは、お住まいの地域社会での奉仕活動から東北地方で復旧工事に関わる活動までの様々なボランティア活動を紹介しています。現役JET プログラム参加者及び元 JETプログラム参加者の並々ならぬ取り組みに光を当てると共に、皆さんにとって、今後の活動につながる刺激となれればと思います。

A letter from Taylor Anderson’s family IN MEMORY

Congratulations on becoming a JET! It is an exciting time with new challenges and opportunities to come. Our daughter Taylor started on this same journey three years ago. She loved the idea of being a JET and her experiences were a dream come true. She made wonderful friends and loved teaching English to her students as well as to an Eikawa group. She became an active, enthusiastic member of her community as you can see from these pictures from a summer festival and an Eikawa group hike. We believe she would have been one of the many JETs who are helping their communities and Japan recover. Today JETs have a different and new challenge because of the Tohoku disaster. With the challenge comes the chance to share in one of the best feelings of satisfaction there is. Teaching English and your country’s culture will be rewarding in itself. The reward of helping families, schools and students rebuild their community can only add to that. Taylor’s Memorial Gift Fund is making donations to organizations like Smile Kids Japan, The Fruit Tree Project and the Ishinomaki Board of Education. But the best donations that can be made are of your time and care to organizations like these. So now it’s your turn to make a difference in a time of great need in a great country. They have a saying at Taylor’s alma mater of “Only what we give remains our own”. Give of yourself and the fun and satisfaction will be with you always. 感謝を込めて

Taylor Anderson’s Family テイラー・アンダーソンのご家族からのお手紙新規JET参加者各位、JETプログラムに合格、おめでとうございます！来日して間もない現在は心躍る時期であり、皆さんがこれから歩み出そうとしているこの道の先には、様々な新たな課題と機会が待ち受けているでしょう。我が家の娘、テイラーも３年前に、皆さんが今立っている場所から旅立ちました。前からJETプログラムに憧れていた娘でしたが、実際に参加してみると、夢がひとつひとつ叶ってきました。ALTとして学校の児童や英会話教室の生徒に英語を教える仕事が大好きで、その一方、大切な友達に出会い、地域社会の一員として活発に色々な活動に参加していました。このページの写真には、娘が英会話の生徒達とハイキング出掛けたところと、夏祭りの模様が映っています。そんな娘は今頃、きっと被災地の復旧支援に取り組んでいるJET参加者の内の一人だったに違いありません。現在のJET参加者は、東北地方の大震災の影響を受けて、過去になかった新しい課題に直面しているのです。もしそれらの問題の解決に貢献すれば、最高の満足感を手につかむことができるでしょう。母語を教えたり、母国の文化について教えたりするという本来の業務もかなり充実した仕事ですが、被災地の学校や家庭の復旧支援に関わってみれば、その充実感は更に増していくでしょう。亡き娘への思いから設立されたテイラー追悼基金 (Taylor’s Memorial Gift Fund)はスマイルキッズジャパン、フルーツツリープロジェクト、石巻市教育委員会などに対して寄付金を贈呈しています。しかし、お金よりも貴重なものがあります。皆さんの時間と能力と思いやりを捧げることが最上の貢献になるのです。素晴らしきこの国は現在、重大な問題に直面しているわけですが、これからはぜひ皆さんに問題解決に取り組んでいただきたいと思います。テイラーの母校の校訓「最後に手に残るものは、自分から与えたもののみ」にあるとおり、これから出会う人々に自分自身を与えると、愉快と満足感はきっと皆さんと共にあるでしょう。感謝を込めて、アンダーソン・テイラーの家族一同

Volunteering & GETTING INVOLVED Dear JET Programme Participants, Since the March 11 disasters, National AJET has played an increasingly vital role in the JET community. In the immediate aftermath, AJET strove to provide timely, accurate news related to safety and preparedness, and as the weeks passed, our focus shifted to offering various resources on how JETs could get involved in relief efforts to assist the Tohoku region. Whether it was translating press conference announcements into English, or setting up programs to provide one-to-one care packages to fellow JETs, AJET has consistently aimed to support JET throughout Japan. In the last four months, our efforts have included setting up financial assistance programs for JETs, working with partner organizations in Tohoku that are attuned to local community needs, establishing volunteer programs and networks for JETs to utilize, and more. The response we have seen from JETs, both within Tohoku and elsewhere, has been overwhelming, and AJET has worked non-stop to respond to JETsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; needs and ideas. Helping JETs to make a difference in their communities is what AJET is all about, and in the coming year, we will continue to focus on providing a variety of options for volunteering, not only in Tohoku (p. 12-13), but also internationally and locally (look for more info on our website at www.ajet.net). ボランティア・奉仕活動の案内 3月11日の大災害が起きてから、JETプログラム参加者の会（AJET）はJET 参加者に対して、ますます重要な役割を担うようになってきました。大災害の直後には、正確な情報を迅速に提供することに努めました。その後、東北地方の被災地の支援活動に協力するための情報を案内することに重点を移しました。会見の発表文書の英訳にせよ、JET参加者から被災地にいるJET参加者あての支援物資を詰めた小包を輸送する事業にせよ、AJETは一貫して、日本のいたるところでJET参加者の支援を目指した活動に取り組んでいます。

VOLUNTEER PROJECTS As new JETs, naturally, your first priority is to acclimatize yourself to a new working and living environment, especially over the coming months. Once you feel comfortable with your situation, though, you may be interested in volunteering in Tohoku. Volunteering can be a wonderful experience, and one that can be enriched by working on a team with your friends, community members, or even completely new acquaintances. Here are just a few volunteering opportunities you can get involved in to support the Tohoku region. Peace Boat Peace Boat is a Tokyo-based organization that has 27 years of experience coordinating large numbers of volunteers, and 15 years of experience working in disaster relief. National AJET has always recommended volunteering with the support of an established organization that has close local ties. And over the last few months, we have had the fortune to work closely with Peace Boat with the goal of providing relief efforts in the city of Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture. Smiles and Dreams: The Tohoku Kids Project Smile Kids Japan is an organization created by former Fukui JET Michael Maher-King. What started as an initiative to arrange once-a-month visits to orphanages by volunteer teams has developed into a nationwide project with active teams in 27 prefectures. Immediately after the March 11th earthquake and tsunami, SKJ mobilized. The all-JET executive team created a structured plan to bring aid to orphanages and children in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures. Smile Kids Japan then partnered with fellow orphanage-focused organization Living Dreams and the two organizations created Smiles & Dreams: Tohoku Kids’ Project, which provides immediate and long-term support to orphanages in Tohoku and the children they care for that have been affected by the March 11th disaster. Most current SKJ volunteers are JETs who hope that through regular updates and promotion SKJ will continue to gain support. It is the goal of SKJ to have volunteer visits to every orphanage in Japan within the next 3 years. VolunteerAKITA is a community based organization formed by the JETs and Japanese community in Akita prefecture. Their goal is simple: to improve the quality of life for those in need through volunteering, service and lots of LOVE. The organization encompasses two initiatives: The Fruit Tree Project, which has raised over ¥1,243,742 and delivered approximately 31,044 fresh fruits to shelters throughout the Tohoku area, and the BIG CLEAN, which has logged 763 hours of volunteering in cleanup/recovery efforts. Together they can provide strength, assistance, and encouragement for the communities that need it most. Let’s help rebuild Tohoku for the future! Foreign Buyers Club FBC is working with Second Harvest Japan to ensure that the food and supplies purchased on its website site are delivered to the people who need them the most, with minimum being spent on overhead charges such as shipping. By offering only a small range of disaster-specific items, FBC can ensure these products are as cheap as possible and the items on offer reflect the current needs of the area. Due to Second Harvest’s regular, direct contact with the people living in Tohoku they are able to gather information about what is needed and quickly relay this to FBC. A regularly updated list is available on the AID 4 OTHERS section of their website. 5 to Survive 5toSurvive: Running for Japan was an event created to help those affected by the March 11th Earthquake & Tsunami. They had events happening all over Japan and many other countries including England, Singapore, America, Canada as well as an event in Africa. Everyone that took part ran, walked, skipped or rode a course that they created up to a distance of 5km. Hundreds of people took part all over the world and in all types of weather to raise just over ¥3,000,000. This year, we hope to build a more unified, well-informed, active and effective JET network and make sure that our students, colleagues, neighbours and contracting organizations are aware of the worth of our community.

One of our tools for achieving our goal is the All-Japan Event Listings page, under Community on the AJET website. These listings are divided into two sections: Music, Sports and JET Events and Japan Guides. You can use the former to help find out what’s going on in your region in addition to the events offered through your prefectural AJET chapters. The second, Japan Guides, showcases the many, many cultural events taking place across Japan. Take this time to get immersed in Japanese culture – both traditional and modern - and get a better understanding of your home away from home. What makes JETs special? Well, some of us go the extra distance to do extraordinary things during our stay in Japan. Some take up and master unique Japanese hobbies; others make a special effort to introduce the culture of their home countries; and still others organize fundraisers or community events. These people plant the seeds of trust, hospitality and mutual exchange between Japan and the international community. For those people, we have the JET Effect, a monthly feature highlighting the inspiring achievements of an individual JET or group of JETs. Also new is our AJET Voice section, which gives JETs an opportunity to write about the grassroots internationalization events they have organised or participated in. JETs are encouraged to submit their own articles about these events and let the rest of the community know what makes the JET Programme such a unique, irreplaceable asset. We have fishing, hiking, boating and camping in spring and summer followed by skiing, boarding and skating in winter. We have Iwate with Morioka Castle, Akita its sake breweries, Hokkaido its Snow Festival in February, and finally Aomori, especially famous for its apple orchards. The spring and autumn are warm, yet cool, meaning that you can enjoy outdoor sports and walking trails. In the phrase “hajime mashite” the second “i” is not voiced. In general, when a “su” appears at the end of a word, such as with “ohayou gozaimasu,” the “u” is not voiced except in very formal situations. We are open to all JET Programme participants every night of the year, from 8PM to 7AM. Our volunteers are all current JET Programme participants, trained for APS. Regardless of what’s troubling you - whether you’ve had a bad day at work, need to see a doctor at 3AM or just want to speak English with someone the volunteers at APS are available to listen.

THE COUNTRYSIDE Wait, what... there’s no train station? Your predecessor told you. You looked on the map and it just wasn’t there. But, for some reason you wouldn’t believe it. Now you’re here and you can’t believe it. Your town is tiny and in the middle of nowhere. Welcome to inaka. But don’t panic just yet. The initial shock will wear off and as you get to know people in your town you will realize that you actually got lucky. That is not to say that the first few months won’t leave you wondering if you made the right decision to come to Japan. You are not alone here. There are definite advantages – and disadvantages – to living in rural Japan.

Your town is a tight-knit community, which you have every chance to become a part of. You will have the opportunity to meet almost everyone in town.

You are likely to be the only foreigner for miles, which will add to your superstar status at school and around town.

Friendships with your co-workers are almost a foregone conclusion. This also means that you will be kept informed of what’s going on in town.

Your Japanese language skills should improve faster than your city-slicker friends. Sometimes its sink-or-swim in this respect but you will also learn some of the more colourful expressions out here – especially in true fishing towns.

Everyone in the community will know your name, who you are and where you live. You won’t just be some other gaijin.

You will get to do things people living in the city never do. You will more than likely get a better insight into Japanese culture, customs and daily life here.

You should have a pretty good financial statement at the end of your stint. With nothing to append your money on, you end up saving it. Rent and taxes should be cheaper than in the city.

Fresh air, and loads of it. You probably live close to a skifield. » Fresh produce. » Kids are generally friendlier and easier than city kids. » Your town might supply you with a car. » You don’t have to memorise train routes and the subway systems, (especially the ones in Tokyo).

Cons »

Toilets are usually long drops. Say no more.

Your local grocery store is probably very small with little selection. The nearest supermarket may be an hour away. Stock up when you can and enjoy the scenery of the drive.

Western products are likely to be unheard of.

Isolation is a common affliction in the rural JET community. Get to know the other JETs around you. Use the phone (you can afford the bill now). If you feel you must get out of town, do so.

During the winter you may be virtually cut off from the outside world. Make plans to meet people over the weekends. Plan a trip during the winter holidays.

A lack of entertainment (perhaps you have a long drive to the video store?). Swap books, CDs, videos with other JETs/your students. Join a local club!

Being the only foreigner in town will mean that for the most part everyone knows where you are and what you are doing at any given time. If you don’t want people to know what you are doing, do it in a town at least an hour away.

Specialised health services can be a long way away. If you have any special needs in this area I suggest you check it out early on.

All told, you are in a good position. You will not only have the opportunity to visit the big cities but you have the opportunity to get away from it and become involved in community life. The friendships you will develop will ultimately be what make your stay worthwhile. Sure, things will get lonely, but don’t let it get you down. Remember that there are others out there in the same boat. Pick up the phone and talk to someone. Keep in touch and get out there and make the most of your new home in inaka.

これらを見ていると、田舎に住むJETはなかなかいいでしょう。都会に訪れることもできるし、都会を離れて、地域社会に加わることもできます。これから築いていく友情は大きなやりがいとなるに違いありません。また、寂しくなることもありますが、落ち込まないでください。同じ立場にある人がたくさんいることも忘れないこと。電話を手にとって、誰かと話してみてください。他の人と連絡を取りながら、田舎の生活を満喫しましょう。

TRANSPORT

GETTING AROUND When it comes to convenient public transport, it doesn’t get much better than Tokyo. Between trains, subways, monorails, taxis, and buses you can get pretty much anywhere you want to go in a relatively short time. In general, it’s cheapest to use only one mode of transport, especially if it’s the Tokyo Metro lines. However, sometimes transferring or using the more expensive JR or Toei networks can’t be avoided. In the end, it’s usually only a difference of a few hundred yen.

公共交通機関に関して言えば、東京より便利な所はないでしょう。電車はもちろん、地下鉄、モノレール、タクシー、バスなど交通手段が多く、行き先がどこであれ、短期間で行くことができます。一般的に言えば、交通手段を乗り換えるたびに費用がかさむので、同じ交通手段を利用して目的地まで乗った方が節約になります。時と場合によっては、乗り換えたり、運賃の割合に高い鉄道（日本鉄道［JR］や党営など）を利用したりしなければならないこともありますが、それでも運賃に大差はなく、数百円といったところで済むでしょう。

Buying Tickets The first thing you need to do is look at the large map above the ticket machine. If the map is all in Japanese, look around the station - there will always be a version in English. When you find your destination station on the map, the number listed below will be the cost. Insert money into the machine and numbers will light up or be highlighted on a screen. Press the cost listed on the map, and the ticket will be issued. Do not lose your ticket after entering the station as you will need it to exit. The electronic gates will keep your ticket once you exit at your destination. If your ticket is not the correct amount, you can always visit a “fare adjustment” machine before you exit at your destination. If you have any problems, notify the attendant. 乗車券の購入まずは自動券売機の上にある路線図を見ましょう。各駅に日英の両語表記の路線図が掲示されているはずです。目的地の駅名の下にある数字はそこまで行く運賃です。自動券売機にお金を挿入すると、いくつかの運賃額が画面に出てきます。路線図で確認した運賃の表示に触れれば、乗車券が発行されます。下車駅の改札を通るのに必要なので、乗車券は大切に保管するようにしてください。目的地の駅の改札機に投入したら、乗車券は回収されません。また、運賃に不足があった場合、改札機に投入するとピーという音が出ます。この場合、改札口付近の清算機が使えるので、問題はありません。分からないことがあったら、駅員に尋ねるといいでしょう。

When To Ride Trains & Subways The hours of operation for most train lines and subways in Tokyo are usually from about 5AM to midnight. Rush hour and last trains can also be painfully crowded. It’s a good idea to leave yourself plenty of time to get back to the hotel if you go out late at night—otherwise you risk the chance of getting stuck until the morning! 何時ごろに電車・地下鉄を利用すればいいか都内の電車や地下鉄のほとんどは午前５時ごろから午前０時ごろまで運行しています。混雑時の電車や終電は非常に混み合うことがあるのでご注意ください。夜遅くまで外出する場合は、時間に余裕を持ってホテルまで戻れるようにしましょう。終電に乗り遅れると、朝まで帰れなくなってしまいうのです。

TO TAXI OR NOT TO TAXI... Taxis in Japan are expensive. Even travelling just within the Shinjuku area can cost a couple of thousand yen depending on traffic. If you have 3 or 4 people, taking a taxi may be a good idea. Make sure you have enough cash — not every taxi accepts credit cards. タクシーに乗ろうか、乗るまいかという問い日本のタクシーは料金が高いです。交通状況にもよりますが、新宿近辺の移動だけでも運賃が数千円にのぼる場合があります。ただし、3～4人の同行者がいれば、手頃な運賃でのれるのかもしれません。多くのタクシーはクレジットカードを取り扱っていないので、利用する場合は現金を多めに用意しておきましょう。

SHINJUKU

NEAR THE HOTEL 宿泊先付近 West Shinjuku If you’re looking for a quick and easy meal, some of the more popular destinations in this area of Shinjuku are Sizzlers, Starbucks, and Royal Host. If you are looking to try something new and break from the typical Western diet, keep an eye out for Watami ( 和民) directly behind the hotel. They have a variety of different foods that you can order from an English menu. For a quick meal without going to McDonald’s, try Yoshinoya and enjoy a Japanese beef bowl. If you want to try some sushi but don’t have much time, have a quick search for the standing sushi shop, or even the sushi that travels to you by conveyor belt. Lastly, while the views from the Keio Plaza are nice, if you have time see if you can head to the 45th floor observation space of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, a short walk to the West of the hotel. On a clear day you can see Mt. Fuji—and the night view is absolutely stunning. It is FREE to get to the top and is open until 11 PM.

西新宿安くて手軽な食事をお求めなら、シズラー、スターバックス、ロイヤル・ホストがこの辺の人気お店です。典型的な洋食を離れて、新しい料理に挑戦してみたいという方はホテルの後ろにある「和民」はいかがでしょうか。英語のメニューも用意してあるので、気軽に注文することができます。マクドナルド以外に手軽な食事をしたいなら、日本の牛丼が楽しめる「吉野家」がお勧めです。寿司を食べてみたいのに時間に余裕がない場合は、立ち食い寿司屋あるいは回転寿司店へ行ってみるといいでしょう。京王プラザホテルからの眺めもすてきですが、もし時間があれば、西へ歩いて直ぐの所にある東京都庁舎の45階の展望室へも行って、そこで眺望をお楽しみください。晴れた日には、富士山も見え、展望室から見た夜景は何といっても素晴らしいです。展望室は入室無料で、開室時間は夜１１時までです。

South Shinjuku The South Exit of Shinjuku Station is a great place to go for dinner or shopping. In this area, you can find good restaurants, as well as Kinko’s in one of the larger hotels where you can go for internet access. There is also a huge department store called Takashimaya nearby. Don’t forget to stop by Yodobashi Camera nearby to get your yearly dose of neon lights while checking out all the newest and best electronics. If you buy anything, be sure to get a point card as there are stores all over Japan and the points add up very fast!

East Shinjuku East Shinjuku is, by far, the most happening section of town. It has more restaurants and bars than you can visit in a year, let alone during Tokyo Orientation. For a nice, relaxed atmosphere with plenty of English speaking staff, check out The Hub, a British-style pub in the area. Also around are video game houses where you can watch people move their hands at lightning speeds until late in the night. Finish the night off with a trip to one of the many karaoke establishments.

東新宿東新宿はホテル近辺で最もにぎやかな場所です。短い東京オリエンテーションの期間ではもちろん、一年間かけても訪れきれないほど数々のレストランや飲み屋があります。バー、居酒屋・パブ、飲食店が数多くあります。英語が話せるスタッフで、寛いだ雰囲気が楽しめる飲み屋なら、「The Hub」というイギリス式のパブにお立ち寄りください。また、ゲームセンターもあって、そこでは夜遅くまで目覚しいスピードでゲーム機操作している人間が多くあり、人間観察もできます。カラオケ店も多くあって、一夜の終わりにカラオケを楽しむのもいいでしょう。

京王プラザの最寄駅は大江戸線の都庁前駅です。駅はホテルの東口から出て、左折した所です。

To the north, south and west of the Keio Plaza Hotel are skyscrapers and office towers. For good restaurants and after-hours entertainment, head east. 京王プラザホテルの北方、西方、東方は超高層ビルや事務所です。美味しいレストラン、アフターファイブの息抜きには東方へお出かけください。

SHINJUKU MAP

The subway station that is the closest to the Keio Plaza is Tochomae (都庁前), which is on the Oedo Line ( 大江戸線). To get to the station, leave the hotel through the East Exit and go left.

HOT SPOTS

OUTSIDE OF SHINJUKU 新宿区外 There are plenty of things to see and do in Tokyo outside of Shinjuku, and many hotspots are just a few minutes away by train. The best way to get to the three areas listed below is to use the JR Yamanote Line which is the green JR line at the station, and the grey dashed line on the next page’s map. 都内観光の全ては決して新宿だけではありません。むしろ、多くの名所は電車に乗ればすぐです。以下の３か所へは、JR山手線を利用すると便利です。山手線は駅の路線図では黄緑色の線で示されており、ガイドブックの次のページの地図では灰色の点線となっています。注意：新宿行き終電の出発時間にお気をつけください。また、駅へ戻る移動時間は必ず余裕を持ちましょう。

Shibuya

If you didn’t get enough of the crowds in Shinjuku, then this is the place to visit. From Shibuya Station (3 stops away from Shinjuku on the JR Yamanote Line) take the Hachiko Exit and check out the Shibuya 109 department store or the numerous dance clubs in the area such as Harlem, Atom or Club Asia. 新宿の雑踏もすごいですが、渋谷のスクランブル交差点の人込みは世界中でも広く知られています。渋谷駅（ＪＲ山手線で新宿駅から３駅目）のハチ公出口から出ると、１０９や周辺の数多くのクラブがすぐです。

Harajuku

Harajuku (2 stops away from Shinjuku on the JR Yamanote Line) is worth a visit for anyone sightseeing in Tokyo. On one side of the station is the beautiful Meiji Shrine, and on the other, all of the Japanese pop-culture stores you can hope for! Have your camera ready to snap the outrageous fashions. 原宿（ＪＲ山手線で新宿駅から２駅目）は東京の観光地として有名であり、一回は見物に行きたい場所です。駅の片方には緑が美しい明治神宮が、もう片方には数え切れない日本のポップカルチャーの商店があります。また、あの原宿の斬新なファッションを逃さないように、カメラを用意しておきましょう。

Ikebukuro

池袋

Ikebukuro (4 stops away from Shinjuku on the JR Yamanote Line) has a slightly more relaxed atmosphere than Shinjuku—and cheaper karaoke too! 池袋（ＪＲ山手線で新宿駅から４つ目の駅）は新宿より少し落ち着いた雰囲気で、カラオケも割合に安く楽しめます！
