2023 JOHN BAPST ATHLetic hall of fame INDUCTION CEREMONY

Welcome!

To the 2o23 athletic hall of fame induction ceremony, Sunday, July 23, 2023

With its opening in 1928, its re-founding in 1980, and the inception of the international program in 2011, John Bapst High School has evolved. In addition to its outstanding academics through the years, there has been another constant: the school’s athletic program. From the time inaugural Athletic Director Norbert Dowd gave the school its purple and white colors and Crusader mascot until today, a proud athletic tradition has grown and flourished, and it is celebrated through the John Bapst Athletic Hall of Fame. Since 1972, inductees have spanned every decade of the school’s history; they made their mark as student-athletes in a wide range of sports and they have helped to write the history of a school known by its motto of Achievement | Integrity | Respect and by the traditions of academic excellence, community, and school spirit that have made John Bapst one of New England’s top high schools.
For their achievements as student-athletes and their place in the history of the school, we honor and celebrate all members of the John Bapst Athletic Hall of Fame. Go Crusaders!

Jerry McGuire '59
Also a member of the school’s basketball team (baseball interfered with fishing), Jerry’s most notable accomplishments were with the 1957 and 1958 varsity football teams. In one of the more notable games, he scored five touchdowns against Old Town, a record that is believed to still stand today. He also had held the record for the most points scored in a single game – 30! Jerry’s team also beat the Bangor High School team for the first time since WWII, a victory that has not been repeated! On the field, Jerry was described in a September 6, 1958 article as “electrifying” in reference to his season opening game that year. Jerry was the team captain during his senior year and was recruited to play at Bates. Sadly, an injury that year ended his high school career. This may have been the springboard for Jerry’s illustrious military career and the foundation for his family. The proud father of three sons, Jerry and his wife Mary met on Armed Forces Day in Charleston and will have been married for 56 years this October. Still active, when not playing golf or hiking a nearby mountain, Jerry loves to garden.

chris mackay '80

Chris MacKay, simply put, according to Coach Lenny Miragliuolo, “was an athlete” –a true leader, team player, and competitor. Chris didn’t need an award to quantify her impact on her team – aside from her will to win, her positive attitude and enthusiasm and support for her teammates were perhaps her most notable qualities. In 1976, Chris was one of only two freshman girls to make the varsity basketball team – and she would go on to secure the MIP award in 1978 and serve as captain in 1979. Known for her tenacious defense and consistent double-digit scoring, and never shying away from a challenge on or off the court, Chris was always a leader by example. Perhaps her most notable achievement as a John Bapst athlete was her 1980 PVC (and school) record in javelin – 109’4” – not to mention her 5th place finish at the Class C state meet that same year. It’s no surprise that Chris was also a cheerleader and a softball player during her time at the school. Chris went on to marry John Bapst alum Scott Dunbar, ’80 and raise her family in Bangor. Suffice to say, Chris emulated the MacKay way – pride, integrity, commitment, and hard work.

Angel nelligan '08

One might say that Angel Nelligan has kept family tradition alive at John Bapst. Not only a relative of school co-founder Monsignor Nelligan, Angel has another relative, sharing in her athleticism, who preceded her in the very same track event –the pole vault. A far cry from her great uncle who landed on a pile of sawdust in the mid-1950s, Angel represents the Nelligan name with three state titles in the pole vault and set several school records. Her contributions to the track team helped to secure team state championship titles for each of her four year at John Bapst. Angel has fed her lifelong commitment to athletics by pursuing other sports like gymnastics and going on to become a certified strength and conditioning coach, not to mention that she is on the school’s faculty in Exercise Science and Wellness – where she imparts the pride of the Nelligan name and the insight of her passion and commitment to sports, wellness, and exercise. Angel was named the 2023 PVC Indoor Track Coach of the Year.
