ne of the best things about working in a high school is that students are not only constantly learning, but constantly asking “What if?”

They wonder about the many possibilities in their futures, but they also wonder about things they might do right now.

At John Bapst, our students and faculty have been pushing the envelope on those possibilities for years. Of course, our kids get terrific grades in great classes, but they do so much more than that.

In my 18 years at John Bapst, we have had students who, while in high school, completed and published cancer research, wrote original symphonies, published books, worked for senators, became world-wide pop stars, and much more.

As I write this, we have students who are working on genetic research with Jackson Lab, preparing to speak at a scientific conference in Seattle about their work on their computer modeling of capillaries in the eye, contributing to a book to be published later this year, preparing to go to the world robotics competition, and inventing new design approaches to offshore wind turbines.

It is such a blessing to be here and to know that when we open the door to new students, we are also opening to door to a wonderful future that begins here!

John Bapst sends 133 2023 graduates off to their next adventure, with encouraging words from guest speaker Karen L. Boudreau, Esq. ‘77

On Sunday, June 4, 2023, at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, 133 Seniors graduated from John Bapst Memorial High School. Co-Salutatorian addresses were delivered by Samantha Ismail and Natalie Logan. Co-Valedictorian addresses were delivered by Sophie Kahn and Martin Skacel The address to our graduates was given by Karen L. Boudreau, John Bapst Class of 1977, attorney, author, lecturer, and, with her husband, Dr. Tom Jensen, philanthropist.

Ms. Boudreau shared many insights from her full, well-travelled, and successful life, including the adage that by helping someone else, you will enhance your own success. “If you work hard, you’re resilient, ask for and take advice from others, and let others help you, you can accomplish whatever goals you choose.” And, she stated, “it’s OK if your goal changes, as long as you have another goal.”

Congratulations to our 2023 graduates and their families.

John Bapst earns Platinum School status

John Bapst Memorial High School recently earned Platinum recognition on the 2023 AP School Honor Roll.

The new AP School Honor Roll is a prestigious annual recognition program that celebrates schools whose AP programs have done outstanding work to welcome students into AP courses and support them on the path to college success.

To qualify for this award, schools must meet or exceed the criteria in three areas: College Culture, College Credit, and College Optimization.

The College Culture category requires that 40% or more of the graduating class took at least 1 AP Exam during high school.

The College Credit category requires that 25% or more of the graduating class scored a 3 or higher on at least 1 AP Exam during high school. The College Optimization category requires that 2% or more of the graduating class took 5 or more AP Exams during high school. At least 1 of those exams was taken in 9th or 10th grade, so that students are spreading their AP experience across grades rather than feeling disproportionate pressure in any single year. John Bapst scored in the Platinum range in all three areas.

This recognition stems from the hard work of students, faculty, and all in the John Bapst community who support them.

Pursuing passions in the sciences at John Bapst

Science faculty members Emma Bragdon ‘17 and Chrissy Walker offer a class for juniors and seniors called Human Genomics Seminar. Using their own anonymous DNA samples, the students conduct the lab protocols for DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, and gel electrophoresis looking at the ACE gene. The findings are included in their own independent research projects.

Across the hall, in Dr. Kevin Real’s field biology class, students take on year-long research projects specific to their areas of interests. The projects range from being heavily involved in field biology or distantly related.

All projects are welcome.

For example, one student is conducting bacteriophage research from soil she has collected to see if it will kill different bacteria on an agar plate. Another student is turning seaweed into a bio fabric to be used for knitting to help reduce carbon emissions.

The class goes on five field biology trips throughout the year. On each trip unique field biology principles are taught, with the students also using the time to gather samples for their own research projects.

Students in both classes presented their work at the Maine State Science Fair at the University of Maine.

With imagination and a desire to learn, Laken Walker ‘25 starts “Career Connect”

At John Bapst, students are encouraged to present and pursue their passions. And with faculty support from instructors like science department chair Mary Lammert, one of many students did just that. Laken Walker ‘25 recently founded a group called “Career Connect.” With it, professionals from the community are invited to share their biological careers with students in an informal setting. And it’s been quite a success.

Students have enjoyed meeting dentists, wildlife biologists, veterinarians, and more. They receive career information, college planning advice, information on volunteering and internships, and more. Plans to grow the program are on the horizon.

STUDENT PROFILE: Jonah bean ’24

BEHIND THE LENS

To student photographer Jonah Bean ‘24, capturing the spirit of John Bapst has been a labor of love and a time of artistic and professional growth

When did you first get interested in photography? What was your first camera?

I was 12 years old when I picked up a camera for the first time. It was a Canon Rebel T5, one of the teacher’s cameras at my middle school. You’ve photographed a lot. Any favorites?

The most satisfying events are the new student orientation, concerts, plays, and musicals, since they encompass the reasons why John Bapst is amazing. Where can we find your photographs?

They can be found in many places, like my website, jonahbean.smugmug.com, along with the John Bapst Yearbook., The Round Table, and viewbooks. Do you feel that your photography has grown while at John Bapst?

My photography skills have certainly grown since I started at John Bapst. I looked at some photos I took freshman year and I can see such a large improvement in not only composing a shot but also my editing skills.

Any surprises along the way?

I’ve experienced surprises along the way for sure, but the biggest one was when I got an email at the end of freshman year, asking if I was available to take photos at the Darling Center opening. At that point, I never thought that email could change my life. Since the gym opening, I have worked with the Development Office for many events.

Are you having fun?

I am having so much fun photographing with John Bapst! I love taking photos, so none of it feels like work. And, as a result of attending many events, I have great relationships with many people in the John Bapst community.

When you’re not photographing events connected to the school, what else do you like to photograph?

I photograph family portraits, senior portraits, sports games, and almost everything in between! My favorite sport to photograph is hockey because it’s so fun to watch and the energy is always on point.

Do you enjoy any hobbies?

During the spring, summer, and fall, I love to cycle and run. I use those activities to clear my head, and unlike most people, I actually enjoy running. During the winter, I coach a youth hockey team, and this past season, we made it to the Northern Regional Finals! You’re about to graduate.

What’s next for Jonah Bean?

I’ll be attending Endicott College in the fall as a Photography major. My ultimate dream is to photograph professional sports while having a freelance business on the side.

For the full interview with Jonah, visit johnbapst.org

KUDOS TO COACH O

Congratulations to Dan O’Connell, John Bapst’s Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, who recently won his 100th career football game with the John Bapst Crusaders. SPRING SPORTS WRAP UP Baseball

The baseball team was 9-7 last spring including a win over eventual state-champion Old Town. They were able to earn a playoff berth for the second year in a row before falling in the semifinal round.

Lacrosse, Boys

While it was a rebuilding year for the lacrosse team, after hosting and winning their first playoff game in school history the year before, the team did earn three victories and many young players gained valuable experience for what we hope is a successful 2024 campaign.

Lacrosse, Girls

As part of a cooperative agreement with Bangor and Orono High Schools, the girls lacrosse players from John Bapst were part of a great inaugural season. The team went 6-8 in Class A competition and finished just mere heal points away from a playoff berth.

ROBOTICS play a significant role in the John Bapst curriculum, led by Engineering and Technology Department Chair and Director of Technology Mike Murphy and fueled by a group of dedicated students.

In fact, this hard work placed the robotics program in the news, with local television news coverage of John Bapst robotics students working through this past summer in preparation of upcoming competitions, including The Vex Robotics Mall of America Signature Event August 4-5, 2023, in Bloomington, Minnesota.

Billed as “the greatest two minutes in competitive robotics,” the competition featured 100 top-notch teams from all over the United States. It’s a magnet for the most skilled and talented VEX Robotics teams in the nation. And although John Bapst didn’t make it to the finals, the experience provided an opportunity of growth for the Bapst team.

“We did not win any awards, but what we got from this trip was so much more valuable,” said Julianna Clark ‘24, team captain. “We all became much closer together as a team and bonded during the entirety of the trip. We all learned the importance of communication, not just within our team, but with the teams around us. This competition really helped us all get our feet off the ground this season and get us motivated. The most important part of all of this though, is that we all had fun.”

The John Bapst robotics teams continue to have fun, competing and hosting competitions as a major force in regional robotics. In October, they brought together 26 teams from 8 different schools. It was the first full-sized robotics tournament in the state this season. More have followed, with each one turning Sekera Auditorium into a whirring, buzzing, energy-driven hall of striking techology with competitors, parents, alumni, faculty, and volunteers adding to the buzz.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY GIVING

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, John Bapst National Honor Society members organized a “pink day” recently. Students and staff at the school donated $500 to Sarah’s House of Maine, which provides temporary housing for patients receiving treatment at Northern Light Cancer Care.

ONE OF OUR OWN

And finally, acknowledging that we humans aren’t the only ones looking for warmth as temperatures dip, Key Clubbers looked out for our four-legged friends by making blankets for donation to the Bangor Humane Society.

We’re always proud when one of our teachers receives special recognition. Congratulations, mathematics faculty member Brendan Murphy on your welldeserved recognition by the College Board. Mr. Murphy has been teaching AP for 23 years and has been a consultant for the College Board since 2002.

VIBRANT VOCALS

Music plays a big role at John Bapst. Last spring, Aubrey Hanscom ‘24 represented the Vocal Music Department as a member of the 2023 All State SATB Choir.

And along with our very popular annual holiday concert, the John Bapst Treble Ensemble presented two concerts: its first standalone spring concert and its first holiday recital.

And this fall, John Bapst vocal students attended a workshop by noted composer and arranger, Moira Smiley, learning a variety of vocal techniques and pieces. The event concluded with a concert featuring Bapst students, workshop participants, and the UMaine Collegiate Chorale.

Alumni News / THE ROUND TABLE

If you were to use the phrase “take flight’ in a headline about John J Nelligan ‘60, you would perhaps be more accurate than you thought. Along with being a popular attendee at annual John Bapst reunions, a 14-year part time employee at the old Bangor Auditorium, and a 23-year employee in the Bangor City Clerk’s Office, John is also a retired U.S. Air Force veteran with 29 years of service.

But “taking flight”? John is also President of the Maine Aviation Historical Society and an adventurer who loves to travel, especially to Ireland, where he has deep roots.

John, who recently gave a talk at the Bangor Public Library on the joys of travel and the connections one makes, has visited many European countries and their major cities, and even participated in Cyr Bus Lines trips closer to home.

Cara Pelletier ‘96 was recently named Council Chair of Bangor for 2023-2024. Cara is Senior Director of Inclusion Works - Disability: IN.

Kerrie Beckett ‘98 celebrated the opening of her pet grooming business, Critter Clippers, in Bangor.

As a result of their on-going expertise in care and clinical trials, the Jeffrey Modell Foundation awarded Jeffrey Modell Diagnostic and Research Center designation to Medical University of South Carolina Health and appointed Dr. Kelli Wong Williams ‘99 as the center’s first director. This distinction allows Dr. Williams and her colleagues to continue to provide early and precise diagnosis and treatment of primary immune deficiency diseases in children and adults. MUSC Health is the southeast U.S. referral location for very sick and specialized patients with rare immunological diseases.

Congratulations to UMass Dept. of Psychiatry’s Ryan Logan ‘00 for winning the NIH HEAL Director’s Trailblazer Award for his research on circadian rhythms in the postmortem brains of people with opioid abuse disorder. This research will lead to new treatments to reduce relapses.

Congratulations to Major Winfield Swanton ‘03 on being named 2023 Action Officer of the Year at the Joint Staff Awards Ceremony at the Pentagon, Washington, D.C.

Major Swanton is a strategic officer focused on the Russian military, holding a Masters in Stategic Intelligence from National Intelligence University with a Russian concentration. The Joint Staff Officer of the Year program recognizes the action officers who have contributed most significantly to missions of the U.S. Armed Forces. The awardee, Major Swanton, was deemed most significant in supporting the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff as he advises the President, the National Security Council, and the Secretary of Defense.

Riley Satterfield - Visual storyteller and artist

Riley Satterfield ‘19 writes, “I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work on the 2023 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as a seasonal scenic artist. A lot of my efforts went towards the new Wonka float, “The Deliciously Delectable World of Wonka,” sponsored by Warner Bros., where I was sculpting and painting tons of candy pieces. I made a variety of chocolate trees, taffy bushes, jellybeans, lollipops, and painted even more! I was also there in New York City on Thanksgiving! The Macy’s Parade Studio team is also responsible for putting the floats together before the parade, and taking them apart after they cross the finish line. Truly such a memorable experience, and I hope to be a part of the magic next year!”

In her words: The role John Bapst played in 2009 graduate Lyndsey Brozyna’s journey of personal cultivation and growth

In May of 2024, I will be graduating from Daoist Traditions College of Chinese Medical Arts with my doctorate in Chinese Medicine. I’ve had the honor of working with diverse patient populations in my time as a clinical intern, treating everything from the common cold to Lyme Disease, epilepsy, and infertility. This experience has illuminated how incredibly powerful this ancient, holistic system of medicine in meeting and treating individuals in their wholeness.

As a Doctor of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine, I hope to provide deeply integrate care in the fields of gynecology, fertility, and obstetrics.

My graduate education has been a rigorous four-year journey which has brought many opportunities for reflection on the chapters which led me here. My journey from an outspoken and intellectually curious girl who graduated from Bapst in 2009 to now, on the verge of completing my doctorate, has been profoundly shaped by the education and experiences I received during my time at [John Bapst].

educators I had the honor of learning with. The emphasis on integrity, perseverance, and compassion has guided me through the challenges of higher education and, ultimately, to the pursuit of my current field of medicine. The holistic approach to education at John Bapst has been the bedrock upon which I have built my academic and personal endeavors.

I want to express my deepest appreciation to John Bapst for being more than an educational institution – it was a nurturing environment that fostered a love for learning and a spirit of inquiry. The encouragement I received to explore my interests and the guidance provided by teachers who believed in my potential were pivotal in shaping my life’s trajectory. [Let me] convey my gratitude to the teachers, administrators, and staff who continue to make a positive impact on the lives of students.

Thank you, kind humans of John Bapst, for being a catalyst in my academic journey. I am proud to be an alumna and I carry the lessons learned within your halls with me as I embark on the next chapter of my career in Chinese Medicine.

It is hard to miss the Sekera name and influence when you walk the halls at John Bapst. The Sekera family at John Bapst dates back to Betty (Boulter) Sekera from the class of 1941. Betty’s children attended John Bapst in the early 60s, including Joe, later a teacher, coach, principal, and occasional bus driver at the school. He famously spent the night to keep the heat on, and more famously helped save the school from closure in 1980. Over the course of a single summer, the school was purchased from the Church and reconstituted into a secular, college-prep high school. It has thrived ever since – becoming home to thousands of talented students, including many more members of the Sekera family. The auditorium that is the centerpiece of the school now carries his name.

We’re already planning upcoming events, including our exciting “Back To Bapst!” annual reunion event, Saturday, August 24, The Athletic Hall of Fame induction luncheon, August 25, and the 14th annual John Bapst Golf Tournament, July 29. More to come!
