e won’t forget 2020; not only for the huge disruption that it caused to everything, including air travel, but also for the opportunity it offered to reconsider some of the things we do and whether there might be better ways to work in the future.

Obviously, we all hope that, following the general availability of a vaccine or vaccines against COVID-19, things will return to normal but will that be the old pre-pandemic normal or something different? Will the ideas that are helping the industry address the challenges of COVID actually offer better ways of working in future? It would certainly be useful to take whatever steps might be necessary to ensure that any future event could be better managed and need not entail the wholesale shut down of the sector.

However, whatever changes and new challenges the future might throw at us, many concerns then will be the same as concerns today: fuel efficiency, flight planning management, ensuring that staff are properly qualified to do their jobs and getting the best out of established and emerging technologies. In this, the developers and vendors of the solutions on which we all rely have continued to work as hard, if not harder during these difficult times, to ensure that

airlines and operators will have the best Operations IT for the future This issue addresses all of those matters starting with a excellent case study of how LOT Polish Airlines identified the need for, selected and implemented a modern digital fuel efficiency solution. Also, the benefits that the airline has already enjoyed with the change. Empire Airlines share with us their interesting experience in implementing an automated solution to manage flight and crew management, how it has coped in this complex area and what benefits the airline has noticed. In the final part of our three-part EFB article, we see how to make the best use of this powerful tool today and what it might offer in the future if only the industry will embrace the change of approach required.

Web Manuals grows customer base by 25% in 2020 More than 300 aviation businesses worldwide now use Web Manuals to digitize their manuals and regulatory documentation, an increase of 25% since the start of the year. The surge in document digitization in 2020, announced in late September, is being led by the US, with over 100 stateside companies now using Web Manuals.

Krister Genmark, Director of Operations Americas at Web Manuals said: “A number of factors have contributed to the rising demand for document digitization.

Firstly, the trend towards business aviation, specifically charter flights as a way of safely travelling has increased this sector of our customer base, now accounting for just over 10% of our all our customers. Secondly, drone use has substantially grown during the pandemic, with the necessary regulatory information meaning efficient document management was needed. Thirdly, the demand for air freight has increased the number of cargo operators requiring support.”

Following the success of the company’s freemium package which was offered to all new customers to support aviation businesses during April to August, this month Web Manuals also launched a freemium service for aviation start-ups to boost innovation as the industry emerges from the COVID-19 crisis.

Krister Genmark added: “Our industry needs to support each other in order to strengthen and grow post-COVID. We are encouraged that many of our freemium

customers are now enjoying the long-term benefits of digitization and we are keen to aid new businesses starting out in aviation. With border restrictions and regional regulations constantly changing, we expect the role of digitization to remain important as aviation businesses strive to stay compliant at all times whilst rebuilding.”

Web Manuals announced in late November 2020 that it has invited all unemployed pilots and aviation professionals in the US to attend a free online training course in documentation control and compliance monitoring. Following a successful virtual event for European attendees earlier this month, a second complimentary training session was held on December 2 for those based in the states.

Krister Genmark, Director of Operations Americas at Web Manuals said “The purpose of this initiative is to provide unemployed pilots and aviation professionals with an opportunity to enhance their skill set and to further prove their commitment to safety while job-searching. Offering safety-minded training is a proactive response to the ‘COVID-19 & Aviation: Time to Rethink’ statement released by the European Cockpit Association (ECA) on September 24, which focuses on the skills and safety performance within aviation in a post-COVID world.

Alongside our free licences for start-ups, we hope this course will be a useful step towards a safety-first rebuilding of the industry.”

The training focuses on how to work with documentation control and compliance monitoring in the Web Manuals system and covers the lifecycle of aviation manuals, including how to monitor, edit, review, publish, and distribute operational documents. Once completed, all participants will receive a Certificate of Completion Diploma to add to their resume.

Lion Air group signs a deal with NAVBLUE to use Charts+ and Navigation+

At the end of October 2020, Canadian operator Flair Airlines became the latest carrier to adopt Bytron’s skybook Ground Portal and EFB Application after identifying how it will help them to become a digital airline. VP of Flight Operations, Matt Kunz, led a comprehensive evaluation process which resulted in skybook coming out on top as the preferred platform and Bytron are now looking forward to working closely together to support the team at Flair.

Flair will be using a number of modules from the skybook suite including Flight Dispatch, Flight Tracking, Airfield Watch and Ops Board along with interactive crew briefings and journey logging courtesy of the skybook EFB Application. This combination will help the team achieve total digital transformation over time and will also be key to achieving the following: • Integrating core systems; • Improving information capture and sharing; • Improving communication across departments; • Reducing workloads and improving efficiency; • Reducing costs and improving on-time performance; • Helping to reduce carbon footprints.

Matt was asked what made Flair select Bytron and skybook and he said: “We chose skybook as the first step in digitizing our operation with a goal to begin leveraging data for decision making and measuring our performance across a wide spectrum. Technology and the data that it can provide will be instrumental in reducing our costs and building that platform now, as we begin our growth, is the key. The flexibility of skybook to modify the crew interface to suit our needs is important and it has the added benefit of allowing us to move to a paperless flight deck. On the Dispatch side of the operation it has improved the workflow and capabilities of our dispatch team and we are still just ‘scratching the surface’ with regard to how it can help us improve efficiency.”

Yonder helps Cargolux and TUI Group reduce cost by streamlining operational documentation Cargolux and TUI Group have recently opted for Yonder as their new content management solution for operational documents. The Swiss company will support both operators with streamlining documentation and compliance to increase efficiency in the respective processes. Cargolux announced in early November 2020 that it has selected Yonder Mind to manage its entire operational documentation. Yonder Mind brings company documents and manufacturer manuals together in one solution and will be rolled out for both AOCs in Luxembourg and Italy.

(ATSG) announced, in mid-September 2020, an agreement to implement Lufthansa Systems’ industryleading Integrated Operations Control Center (IOCC) solutions at each of ATSG’s individual cargo airlines, Air Transport International and ABX Air. The recently signed contract enables each airline to swiftly migrate to the proven Lido Flight 4D flight planning system, monitor flight operations with NetLine/Ops ++ and manage its crews with NetLine/Crew.

Smart4Aviation welcomes Iberia Airlines as a new customer In these special times of hardship and uncertainty caused by COVID-19, Smart4Aviation was pleased to announce, in late October 2020, a new customer in Europe — Iberia Airlines (part of the IAG Group). Nepal Airlines changes over to NAVBLUE to use N-Flight Planning The all-Airbus operator Nepal Airlines signed a deal with NAVBLUE in May 2020 to use N-Flight Planning to optimize their flight operations. The operations went live on October 29th, 2020 after a couple of months of trial runs. The airline, which was already using NAVBLUE’s Navigation+, Flight Data Analysis (FDA), Flysmart as well as N-RAIM, had also started using N-Tracking since August 2020. With N-Flight Planning it will be able to plan and operate on the safest routes in a highly optimized manner and further reduce operations costs.

NAVBLUE signs cooperation agreement with Electronic Logbook provider Ultramain In mid-November 2020, NAVBLUE and Ultramain Systems signed a cooperation agreement to integrate Ultramain Electronic Logbook (ELB) into NAVBLUE’s Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) applications.

ULTRAMAIN ELB replaces aircraft paper flight logs with an easy-to-use, touch-screen interface that speeds communication between cockpit crews and ground maintenance teams.

ULTRAMAIN ELB enables faster turnaround times, so aircraft spend more time in the air and less time on the ground. NAVBLUE’s Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) includes an Electronic Flight Folder application in the cockpit and a ground tool which manages the workflow between OCC systems and the on-board applications. It covers all mission data required for a flight, including archiving of any reporting and associated data.

Airlines are constantly looking for integrated solutions to facilitate their daily operations and this cooperation agreement will allow them to have their EFB and ELB solutions in the same platform.

Vistair continues to support Loganair’s document management Loganair announced in late November 2020 that it has chosen to continue its relationship with Vistair’s DocuNet to provide a coherent, single point of control for managing all operational documentation including OEM data for their ATR fleet.

Loganair, known as Scotland’s Airline, was founded in 1962 and is one of the UK’s longest established airline operations. Since that time, its route network has grown to encompass over 40 routes to and from Scotland, the Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Norway and Ireland, making it the Uk’s largest regional airline. In 2018, they introduced the ATR42 to the fleet, forming part of the airline’s future operational plans under the Loganair brand.

Vistair has worked in partnership with Loganair since 2012, when DocuNet was first implemented to support publication of its OEM paper manuals. In 2018, Loganair invested in paperless technology by rolling out 6th generation iPad devices for its pilots and crews to serve as mobile EFBs to support sustainability, operational efficiency and to improve flight operations. This agreement strengthens the existing relationship and continues to provide a document management platform with a single point of control and superior usability for end-users. In addition, DocuNet facilitates the ability to leverage structured data across their mixed fleet, to drive further efficiencies throughout their operation.

SITA partners with Safety Line to make flights more sustainable SITA, the global IT provider for the air transport industry, announced in late November 2020 that it is partnering with start-up Safety Line to help pilots and airlines limit carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and operational costs by reducing fuel consumption of aircraft at key flight stages.

A flight can be roughly divided into three phases: climb, cruise and descent. Safety Line, a young French company that specializes in predictive big data solutions for airlines and airports, has made it its mission to help save aircraft fuel and reduce CO2 emissions during all these flight phases with a software suite called OptiFlight. The focus currently lies on the climb-out — the most fuel-consuming phase of a flight — and the cruise phase.

As part of the new partnership and through the ‘Digital Day of Operations’ portfolio, SITA now also offers Safety Line’s OptiClimb software. OptiClimb uses tail-specific machine learning performance models in combination with 4D weather forecasts, to recommend customized speed changes at different altitudes for each climb. The software predicts fuel burn in tens of thousands of possible flight scenarios and then issues recommended climb speeds to pilots ahead of each flight. Safety Line data shows that climb fuel savings of 5-6% are possible for each flight without affecting passenger safety or comfort. On a yearly basis, this could reduce CO2 emissions by several thousands of tons and operational costs by several million dollars, depending on the size of the airline fleet. Safety Line estimates that 5.6 million tons of CO2 could be avoided if all airlines in the world were to use OptiClimb.

NAVBLUE and SARSYS-ASFT announced in late November 2020 that they have signed a reseller agreement for the provision of NAVBLUE’s RunwaySense runway condition reporting data via SARSYS-ASFT’s MIDAS visualisation platform for use by airport operators. This reseller agreement allows airport operators to access highly accurate runway condition data obtained from NAVBLUE’s RunwaySense braking action identification solution, via the SARSYSASFT MIDAS visualisation platform which will integrate the data and present it with other key runway condition information. The integration is on-going and the integrated solution will be operationally available on 15 January 2021.

RunwaySense uses the aircraft as a sensor to identify the braking action, based on Airbus aircraft Performance models, against the FAA’s Take-off and Landing Performance Assessment (TALPA) Runway Condition Assessment Matrix (RCAM).

The data generated is compliant with the mandatory ICAO Global Reporting Format (GRF), due to come into effect in November 2021. Today, 20 airlines in all continents committed to contribute to RunwaySense, representing close to 1,000 aircraft. RunwaySense is a web-based solution where airspace users share runway condition reports in real-time to better understand how the runway condition is trending, and to allow the airport to anticipate and mitigate slippery conditions.

MIDAS is a collaborative runway assessment platform for processing vast amounts and various types of data input. Through MIDAS data can be viewed, and complete runway assessments can be performed. Collected data is visualized and can be monitored in different views such as graphs, tables and maps.

T

he heart of this article is the implementation of a new fuel efficiency software system in LOT Polish Airlines. But first some background about the airline’s history, fleet and flight network. LOT Polish Airlines combines tradition with modernity. Being one of the twelve longest established airlines in the world, LOT has been connecting Poland, Central and Eastern Europe with the world for more than ninety-one years (figure 1).

There are almost ninety aircraft in the LOT fleet (figure 3) from eleven different airframe and engine combinations, including jets and turboprops, from three aircraft manufacturers: Embraer, Boeing and Bombardier. In terms of the age of the fleet, LOT’s is one of the youngest and most modern in Europe.

Every year, LOT hosts millions of travelers on its aircraft, carrying over 10 million passengers in 2019. The crane is a bird that is a symbol of strength and stability and it has been part of LOT’s logo for ninety years. Cranes are noted as longdistance flyers but LOT does not only fly long-haul (figure 2).

The airline’s flight network has been structured to answer the needs of modernday passengers. LOT connects Central and Eastern Europe with the main destinations in the region, Western Europe and the most important business

As a company, LOT is well aware of its responsibility to take care of the environment and takes that responsibility very seriously. Operating in a more sustainable way is LOT’s long-term goal and one of greatest opportunities to reduce aviation’s CO2 footprint. Beyond the modernization of the fleet, that environmental responsibility is met through implementing more efficient procedures — both onboard and on the ground — everything to make operations greener.

wasn’t able to cover all of its fleet. Another challenge was communication with pilots who are considered to be the key players in LOT’s fuel efficiency program.

Without their co-operation, it would be impossible to have a successful fuel program. By focusing only on generating data, LOT was unable to identify where the potential fuel savings might be found, which rendered the implementation of further fuel initiatives pointless. The point was reached where most analytical work ended with the statement that we cannot improve what we cannot measure.

People felt helpless to move things forward. However, being aware of the imperfections in the existing solution, LOT decided to look for a software that would allow them to move the center of gravity from data collection to data analysis. In short, a game changer.

Challenges in fuel efficiency

Moving on to fuel efficiency, let’s take a look at the key challenges concerning LOT’s fuel program. In 2017, LOT started the implementation of a fuel efficiency policy in the company. At the start of the project, a set of several initiatives based on best practices were established: things that were already known to the industry as fuel savers. The potential savings were only estimated and it was very difficult to say whether the actions that had been taken were actually working or not. As the network and fleet grew, LOT started to face increasing difficulties maintaining already recognized initiatives. Not to mention the implementation of new ones.

Due to the variety of manufacturers, aircraft types and models represented in the fleet as well as different data sources, data collection became a challenge for LOT. Most of the time was spent generating data instead of analyzing it. Also, aircraft avionics software is not free from errors which led to the point where LOT

was a top priority. Engaging pilots in the fuel efficiency program was also high on the list: LOT wanted to give them a window on their personal results versus others as well as showing where and how improvements might be achieved.

THE SOLUTION

Many readers can probably relate to all that is written above. But at the end of the day, everybody wants a solution that will let them analyze, implement and improve fuel efficiency initiatives which would lead to actual savings. Although everybody might seem to want the same, if we look deeper, individual needs might be slightly different. That’s why LOT was looking for a solution that would offer the possibility for customization. LOT didn’t just want to buy a box with some already developed features with no room for changes. For LOT, all of those needs and even more were answered when we met the StorkJet team (figure 6).

IMPLEMENTATION OF FUELPRO

Let us now take a look at how the implementation of fuelPro went at LOT. In one word, it could be described as simple for LOT as their only job was to provide source data of proper quality while the rest of the implementation was carried out by StorkJet. LOT provided quite a few data sources (figure 7) although, in all honesty, some of those were far from perfect.

Another issue was that, with the diversity of the fleet, LOT had very different needs for every initiative. Considering the imperfection of the data, StorkJet had to perform a set of quality checks, necessary repairs and the exclusion of outliers before matching all data sources to produce one version of information about each single flight. For each flight, a set of performance indicators were calculated for every fuel efficiency initiative. The ultimate goal was to achieve the highest data quality possible in one application. StorkJet definitely met that goal.

StorkJet made the acceptance environment ready during the implementation, which made it possible to see how new data appeared in real-time. At the same time, there was the opportunity to comment on the user interface and submit proposals for changes. One important thing to mention is that the fuelPro environment is fully customizable: StorkJet made many individual changes to the platform to suit LOT’s fleet, operations and network, starting with filtering and validation options to adding extra charts and totally new initiatives plus the possibility to create custom charts and reports. The best part is that, from the time of signing the contract to a fully customized, productive solution was only five and a half months. For LOT, fuelPro is the solution that will grow and develop with the airline; a solution that adapts to their values, needs and expectations. fuelPro is also a team of great specialists who are ready to support LOT at any time.

ANALYTICAL TABS

Now, let’s look at how LOT uses fuelPro and towards actual savings that have already been achieved. fuelPro is mainly used daily by LOT’s fuel team to measure, track and monitor the progress of fuel initiatives, to stay on track and to make adjustments when needed. Because fuel is one of the main costs for an airline, fuelPro is a great tool for LOT’s management board. From the dedicated executive dashboard, they can track fuel goals and check actual savings.

other departments throughout the company. The platform is also used by the airline’s chief pilots, fuel efficiency pilots, weight and balance, and flight planning department to help them identify areas for improvement and monitor the application of best practices. One of the most important groups are the pilots. fuelPro has a dedicated interface in the platform just for pilots which we’ll look at in more detail further on. But first, some case studies.

CASE STUDY: CONTINGENCY FUEL

For the first case study, we’ll look at contingency fuel. Before even that, we need to clarify what is the purpose of contingency fuel? The basic definition states that contingency fuel is loaded to cover variations between planned and actual trip fuel for unexpected factors such as deviation from forecast weather conditions or from the planned route. In general, it’s for deviations between planned and actual demand on fuel.

There are several methods for calculating contingency fuel. The basic ones are Case study: CONTINGENCY FUEL 5% of trip fuel, 3% of trip fuel or minimum contingency, reduced contingency fuel and statistical contingency fuel.

Another case study from the LOT experience is how they managed APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) usage on the Boeing 787 and how fuelPro helped with Case(figure study:9).

As the chart shows (figure 8), in LOT before the implementation of fuelPro, for long-haul flights contingency fuel was planned as 5% of trip fuel. Because there was not any proper software available with good quality data to check, the airline wasn’t fully aware of the situation or the saving potential. After implementing fuelPro, LOT was able to change policy and start planning contingency fuel as 3% of trip fuel. As you can see on the chart, that change is pretty visible. One year after commencing the application, LOT was able to save nearly 2 million dollars on this one initiative. But, implementing 3% contingency fuel is not the end of the story. LOT’s next step is to implement statistical contingency fuel and with fuelPro, it will be possible to succeed and save even more.

At LOT, a considerable effort is made in reducing fuel consumption and in-flight CO2 emissions on long haul flights. However, once the aircraft lands, all of those benefits and savings can get thrown out of the window with inefficient ground operations procedures. APU is a great example. The airline knows that limiting APU usage ensures very significant savings in terms of fuel consumption and maintenance. Unfortunately, LOT’s resources weren’t enough to analyze FDR (Flight Data Recorder) data in terms of the APU. For proper monitoring, LOT wanted to have that data properly imported with a software that will allow them to analyze APU usage based on multiple conditions such as aircraft type, airport or weather conditions. None of that was possible before the implementation of fuelPro. Now, LOT analyzes APU usage for each phase in details: taxi out,

“On reducing APU usage during the taxi in phase, LOT was able to save 35 kilograms of fuel for every 787 landing at Warsaw.” in-flight, taxi in and turnaround. LOT started with APU usage at taxi in phase in the home base, Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport. 99 percent of taxiing phases at Warsaw were performed with the APU turned on. What is more, in some cases APU was turned on while the aircraft was still in the air, or even when electrically powered ground equipment was available after landing. Using fuelPro, LOT could share these results with the pilots to start a discussion about what changes could

be made. As a result, an appropriate procedure has been introduced both for pilots and for ground handling. Now, by using fuelPro, it is possible to check the application of APU fuel consumption usage and APU usage time. More importantly, LOT’s pilots can check their own compliance with the procedure.

On reducing APU usage during the taxi in phase, LOT was able to save 35 kilograms of fuel for every 787 landing at Warsaw.

CASE STUDY: TAXI FUEL PLANNING

This last case study is a great example of how fuelPro helped LOT in dealing with an unexpected change in the aviation world. LOT planned a fixed amount of taxi fuel for every aircraft type having in mind that it might not be the most fuelefficient way of doing it. However, as in the previous case the airline did not have the software that would allow it to analyze and monitor application of the changes. That is why LOT remained with the functioning way of taxi fuel planning. Even after the implementation of fuelPro, LOT did not change that

policy. Knowing that it might be time consuming and that savings might not be significant, it was left on the ‘to do’ list while the airline focused on the initiatives with higher savings potential… then Covid happened.

Travel restrictions and flight reductions led to a decrease in airport traffic; less traffic meant shorter taxi times (figure 10) and shorter taxi times equals lower fuel consumption.

In fuelPro, new data from the flight data recorders is implemented to the platform on a weekly basis. This way LOT was immediately able to notice a reduction in taxi time which correlated with a reduction in fuel consumption.

Using fuelPro custom reports, LOT was able to track the data flight by flight, and compare taxi fuel consumption before and during Covid, validated by aircraft type, departure airport, sectors, time of the day, delays, runways and weather conditions. It seems like a lot of work but, in fact, the software did most of it. As a result, LOT was able to establish new taxi fuel values, not only for every aircraft type but also distinguished by departure airports. What is more, LOT can set targets for every airport and check the application of this policy.

At the time of writing, the implementation of this new policy was not complete but it was in its final phase. However, we hope that by sharing it we can show how fuelPro helped LOT to react in time and implement changes as soon as possible.

With this new approach, LOT hopes to save up to 50kg of fuel for each short-haul and domestic flight.

With the implementation of fuelPro, LOT’s pilots have a dedicated platform available for their eyes only. Each pilot can check details about their operations and compliance with cost saving fuel initiatives in all flight stages. They are able to discover how successfully they used the established fuel policy in a particular month and can compare their performance with other pilots. They can also check one of their recent flights to see the route on the map and display the flight details. Additionally, extra charts can be created and made available for pilots in the platform. What is more, every pilot can check their performance for a chosen sector and aircraft type which, considering LOT’s fleet diversity, is a great feature. StorkJet also provides an online fuel efficiency manual to explain how the platform works and how to navigate it. Additionally, it provides an explanation of each fuel initiative and shares hints on how to improve. This is a great help for LOT because most of the questions that pilots might have are able to be answered immediately by a simple ‘click’.

Especially for pilots’ performance, LOT needed the highest data quality and coverage possible to be sure that every piece of information shared with crews is correct. Once again, StorkJet met LOT’s expectations. As well as the web platform, LOT also wanted to share monthly fuel statistics with pilots via email. StorkJet was able to meet that need with the capability to create and share such reports, and they took responsibility for distribution of those reports. While implementing this

part of the system, LOT wanted to work in tight cooperation with the crews to meet their needs and create a tool that they would want to use.

Different fleets had different requirements but, like every part of fuelPro, the Pilot’s Performance Tab is also customizable. Thanks to that, LOT was able to adjust expectations for both the short- and long-haul fleets. For each flight, pilots receive a comparison of the flight path with the most optimum one, calculated based on StorkJet’s tail-specific performance models with artificial intelligence (AI) applied.

By comparing the most optimum flight path with the actual one flown, pilots can check what are the areas for improvement and what is the saving potential in every minute of the flight. Such charts are available for climb, cruise and descent phases.

In figure 12, you will see the descent chart with the actual flight path marked in blue and the optimal path marked in green.

FINAL THOUGHTS

For LOT Polish Airlines, the StorkJet fuel efficiency software has been an eye-opener. Now the airline is able to track fuel efficiency initiatives and develop totally new ones. fuelPro is a powerful analysis tool that collects all fuel data from various sources into one application. It has enabled LOT to discover new fuel saving possibilities and successfully implement them. By sharing the information with pilots, LOT is encouraging them to fly more efficiently and greener. They are much more aware of their fuel performance and ways to improve. And this is just the beginning!

The first chart represents pressure altitude, the second chart indicated airspeed and the third one shows fuel usage. By analyzing such charts, pilots could see that ‘top of descent’ started too late. As a consequence, the aircraft was flying too fast and, in the end, the pilot had to apply the speed brakes to reach the appropriate speed. The fuel saving potential calculated by StorkJet’s performance models is 73kg.

A

s this case study focuses on Empire airlines, it will first be useful to tell readers something about that business. It’s a private company established for more than 43 years and flying FAR Part 121 passenger and packages and FAR Part 135 packages on more than 250 flights a day. There are 400 employees and the sixty strong fleet includes Cessna Caravans, ATR-42 and ATR-72 aircraft types plus Empire will be introducing the new ATR-600 towards the end of 2020.

THE SEARCH FOR A NEW SOFTWARE PACKAGE

So, what was Empire Airlines looking for? When Empire decided to partner with Hawaiian Airlines that also represented a move to start flying passengers, which Empire had not done since 1995. At the same time, the new rest and duty rules, FAR Part 117, were released. Empire had been handling rest and duty manually on a paper system so needed to find something else to handle that: something that would integrate with the established ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system and could be introduced within budget. Melanie ‘wore Google out’ looking for a solution, sharing with peers and getting close to the wire, getting nervous, because there didn’t seem to be anything that would fit the available budget. Big and complex systems designed for big airlines just wouldn’t work for Empire but, through that Google search, Melanie found an article about a company, eTT Aviation with a product SkedFlex, in Boise, Idaho, which was itself a good omen as that’s the same state as where Empire Airlines is based.

Melanie got in touch that same day and the contract had been signed within the week before implementing the system. When looking for a software vendor, you’re looking for a partner and that proved to be case with Empire Airlines and eTT Aviation. Setting up the initial integration was extremely simple and the eTT programmer was knowledgeable, so the integration was done quickly. Making subsequent changes to that integration has also been easy.

Since then, working with eTT has been very positive for Empire Airlines.

SkedFlex was implemented quickly, and painlessly integrated with Empire’s ERP program. That gave Dan and the dispatch team what they needed to start tracking rest and duty, then using that information for scheduling, informing pilots and enabling the pilots to trip trade. It was not something that the airline was particularly looking for but was happy to get and, of course, the pilots certainly were happy with that. In 2019, eTT purchased a program called MISA, which stands for Management Information System for Aviation, and Empire happens to use a hybrid of that as their current ERP system. That’s a legacy program, something that needs to be upgraded, which would have been difficult for Empire to manage in-house. Now, it will be possible for Empire Airlines to partner with eTT to get that ERP system modernized. It’s used for every part of Empire’s operation, the MRO side of the business as well as accounting, payroll, Human Resources, purchasing, inventory management…. in short, everything. So, even though it’s legacy and aging

This offers Empire an exciting opportunity to progress the update of the ERP.

IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NEW SOLUTION

As both Melanie and Dan have confirmed, the implementation was super quick, and that was a pleasant surprise. SkedFlex is a modern visual tool. Dispatchers or anyone can walk into the OCC (Operations Control Center) and immediately see on screen just what is going on with the operation. It offers visual cues for problems that are coming, especially on the passenger side; in fact, the visual functionality is really exciting and that flows through to every part of the system.

Also, because it came up so fast, it made dispatch really efficient.

Finally, customer support has been excellent with prompt responses to any email sent from Empire, including from the pilots when they make direct enquiries about the system. A good example would be when Dan, at 11:00 one Sunday night on the day before a holiday, was loading schedules and working with SkedFlex from home, he encountered something that he had not previously seen. He couldn’t tell whether the program was going wrong or whether it was something action of his that was the cause. Not expecting a response at that time or for a couple of days, the issue wasn’t critical, he nevertheless sent in a support ticker to eTT. Within ten minutes, he had received a reply email telling him that the eTT people were seeing what he was seeing, that they understood the problem and, more importantly, explained what Dan was doing wrong. Within 15 minutes and that late at night, eTT customer support had fixed the problem that Dan, new to the system, had inadvertently created. Excellent customer support.

In figure 2, you can see a daily schedule page (DSP) which is typical of most Dispatch operations.

BENEFITS OF AN INTEGRATED SYSTEM

One benefit for the ERP legacy system at Empire Airlines is the integration. As it runs all aspects of the business, there is no duplicate entry and there is the instant visual feedback (see above) and the availability from anywhere in the system, including mechanics and ground support (figure 1).

In, say, Hawaii, Ground Support can use a screen to see what’s going on with the operation across the US and nearly everybody can use that visual representation to see what’s going on with the operation.

There are some specific things that Empire Airlines really likes about this: we have already described it as being visual; it’s also, for lack of a better term, idiot proof. Dispatchers can instantly and at a glance see the entire operation or can focus in on a particular sector to see whether there are any problems. It is also dynamic, it moves quickly, the business can change things around, see who the crews are and pull up data on those crews almost instantly.

Some of the visual tools included in SkedFlex (figure 3) allow users to identify when there are starting to be problems, such as flights being delayed or delayed crew duty days: the display starts changing colors which is the foolproof factor built into the system.

As those displays go from a normal color to yellow, to orange or even to red, if things start to get into violation territory, they can be instantly pulled up so that the dispatchers or crew schedulers can look at that and recognize that they have a problem and need to take action right away. Users can look as far out as the schedule is built for any anomalies in the system.

In ‘crew scheduling’, at the bottom of the screen, the crew scheduling owners are able to see any problem that they might encounter as they load schedules up for individual crew members. It’s possible to instantly see whether there is going to be a problem, with a visual representation that provides all the information to the dispatchers and crew schedulers as they work through it.

It also identifies any flights that are not properly crewed, highlights them and lets the users know that there is a problem where crew members are not compatible or where there is a crew member missing on a particular flight.

All through the process, Dispatch and Crew Scheduling get real notifications and violation warnings as things progress. The check-in capabilities of the system for crew members using an App, allows them to see where they’re at and in legal terms. So, when they check in for a flight, they can know instantly that they’re legal to conduct the flight, as long as everything goes as scheduled and, as the schedule moves through the day the dispatchers and the crew members themselves can see if they start running into trouble and can make decisions and keep everyone informed about the operation.

At the time of writing, Empire Airlines was just implementing a new crew pay module. One of the problems that the airline had encountered was that it had a different pay structure from that used at most airlines. Additional compensation is provided to crew members when they provide additional assistance to the business such as working on days off or giving up days off to cover for illnesses or injuries.

SkedFlex was able to customize the pay module to the unusual way that Empire structures these additional compensations. So, one of the benefits that Empire really likes about the program is that it is customizable to each individual operation.

SkedFlex wasn’t fully implemented in Empire Airlines at the time of writing but was expected to be up and running shortly thereafter and one feature of it allows crew members to see how they’re going to be paid, what their pay is going to be based on what they’ve actually flown and where they’re going to go in the future based on their schedule. It also gives them instant access to know, if they’re trip-trading something, how that is going to affect their pay structure.

Last, Empire Airlines is going to be implementing a dispatch management and flight planning system. There was currently, at the time of writing, a separate program in use for flight planning where, again, Empire is unique in that they generate multiple-leg flight plans. The previous system didn’t manage that very well, so one of the things that the airline liked about the program that they were putting on line in conjunction with SkedFlex is the ability to modify it and to do multiple legs where a user can work lineally and move through a process doing multiple-leg flights as opposed to having to trick the system and work backwards.

One reason why Empire Airlines moved in this direction with SkedFlex was that Dan spent literally nine months with the FAA over his shoulder testing SkedFlex with all the rest and duty regulations such as FAR 117, 121, 121 Supplemental, 125, 135 scheduled and non-scheduled, creating different scenarios and intentionally trying to break the program. This was to prove to the FAA that the airline could take someone who was flying a passenger operation one day, put him on a cargo operation the next day and SkedFlex would accurately track and monitor and keep that person legal throughout the entire process. Everything that was done to try to break the system was unable to do so, and there were some pretty creative scenarios devised for this.

FUTURE MODULE IMPLEMENTATIONS

As mentioned above, Empire Airlines had not yet, at the time of writing, implemented all SkedFlex modules but were planning to introduce a couple more in the near future. One of those was the Fleet Management module.

We’ve already mentioned the capabilities of the fleet management system (figure 4); capabilities such as ‘drag and drop’, scheduling of all the tails as well as tail swaps, the ability to employ multiple ‘what if?’ scenarios to determine ‘what will happen if we make certain tail changes?’ or, if an aircraft goes AOG (aircraft on ground), ‘how is that going to affect our burndown into scheduled inspections?’

to manage DMIs (deferred maintenance items) with integration to a maintenance system or manually, any DMIs can be fed in to the system and violations will be shown if the DMI is going to go past when it needs to be resolved.

KEEP UP WITH IT DEVELOPMENTS

SkedFlex undertakes all the tracking depending on whatever type of qualification is being tracked (one-time qualifications, threshold qualifications, recurring qualifications or occurrences such as completing a night landing) with the recently added capability to also track all training events whether on simulators or in classrooms; plus, to even do all the scheduling for those simulators or classrooms. It can handle individual training delivered in the simulator, providing the instructors with the tools to complete all the grading, individual training items in the simulator, all those get grouped into a training event which then get further grouped into a curriculum which is what users tie their currency to from then on.

Tracking is, again, visual using the same heated warnings (green for good and then, as the individual approaches the expiry of their qualification, the colors heat up) so that, during a base month, the display will be yellow and, in a grace month it will be orange. If a crew member is scheduled to an aircraft for which they’re not qualified or if they don’t have their medical or something like that, then the same warnings and violations are displayed on the ‘day of Ops’ page that would be the case if exceeding 117 rule or suchlike.

Empire Airlines is an international air carrier and a FedEx Express feeder operating freight services throughout the western United States. ‘Ohana by Hawaiian’, operated by Empire Airlines, provides passenger service and cargo operations inter-island operating a fleet of ATR 42s and ATR 72s. The airline has a fleet of 60 planes including ATR 42s, ATR 72s and Cessna 208 Caravans.

These are all of those events that have to be orchestrated in a timely manner and in an order with the risk that, if one event gets missed, that will result in a late departure. So, who gets notified and how if, say, the fuel truck doesn’t show up on time or the cleaners aren’t there? SkedFlex has the capability of detecting that and sending a notification. Also, when the data is updated in Airport Operations Management, that is sent out to the Passenger Information Displays (PIDs) at the airport: it’s a pretty extensive system.

He founded an internet start-up while still a student, and has since led projects around integrated Electronic Flight Bag operations, pilot training and runway safety systems with that same entrepreneurial spirit. At NAVBLUE he is now leading the transition to an integrated agile lean portfolio management to enhance the customer value creation and boost competitiveness.

Aircraft IT: Your name, your job title and the name of the business?

Thomas Lagaillarde: Thomas Lagaillarde, Vice President Product Portfolio & Programmes, NAVBLUE Aircraft IT: How did NAVBLUE get started?

TL: In the mid-80s a Canadian pilot conceived and developed a computer system to calculate the benefits of tankering fuel through a computerized flight planning system and created Navtech to develop this technology. In 1994, Navtech merged with Compuflight, a flight operations service provider based in New York, to expand its flight

planning market share and to introduce runway analysis service to its customers. Expanding gradually into Europe by acquiring several other companies, Navtech was taken over by Airbus in 2016, and was merged with Airbus LUCEM and Airbus ProSky to form NAVBLUE. Combining Navtech’s agile software development with the unique OEM expertise in aircraft and operations, NAVBLUE is in a unique position to bring innovations to solve industry problems in the flight operations domain. More recently NAVBLUE has acquired, in February 2020, AVIOLINX an innovative Crew and Operations software company based out of Sweden.

Aircraft IT: What is the attraction of aircraft-related software?

TL: The management of flight operations is a very complex task that involves many systems that should all be connected to optimize cost and efficiency in an often-changing environment, including external parameters which could have very high impact such as weather, air traffic, etc. Different airlines have very different kinds of operations depending on their size, geography and business model, which has led to the creation of in-house or custom developed software solutions that are costly to maintain and difficult to evolve as airlines drive for more efficiency and cost optimization while ensuring

continued safety. To support airlines in their constant hunt for both efficiency and safety, NAVBLUE is in the process of building an integrated suite of solutions which will help airlines to create a flight ops eco system that will deliver new levels of system wide efficiency and resilience to irregular operations.

Aircraft IT: What is the guiding business principle that drives NAVBLUE? TL: At NAVBLUE we are convinced that global optimization must address both planning and execution while making a better use of available data to produce more accurate models that will support the reduction of margins detrimental to efficiency. Accordingly, we are working on the harmonization of the aircraft models used in the different ground and board systems, which, on Airbus aircraft, extends to the aircraft. This allows a perfect match between the planned flight, the electronic flight bag and the aircraft flight management system. NAVBLUE also strives to be the trusted partner for our customers to support safe and sustainable growth. We work with our customers in product definition and design, and work closely with them to identify possible evolutions for the future.

Aircraft IT: What has been NAVBLUE’s greatest technical achievement to date, and why?

TL: Our great achievement to date was the migration of locally installed software solutions to web based hosted and cloud-based solutions. This is paving the way for seamless integration of all airlines’ systems via a cloud-based flight operations bus enabling more automation and enhanced decision making.

Aircraft IT: What has been NAVBLUE’s greatest business achievement to date, and why?

TL: The successive acquisitions and integrations by Airbus of NAVTECH in 2016, creating NAVBLUE, and AVIOLINX in 2020. While connected to Airbus and based on the pioneering spirit of our mother

Aircraft IT: What have been NAVBLUE’s disappointments and what have you learned from them?

TL: The failure of some large implementation projects with 2-3 years’ timelines has taught me we should implement fast and adapt later based on the user feed-back rather than trying to get everything right first time on a large scope. The business context is evolving so fast (the COVID crisis is a good example) that the requirements defined two years ago may not be applicable when you deliver them. The same applies for organizations or people.

TL: NAVBLUE is making strides in a number of important subjects, including the extension of our portfolio capabilities to address new markets and new customer segments, the transition from EFB (Electronic Flight Bag) to EFA (Electronic Flight Assistant), the transition to cloud-native modular architecture of all ground systems communicating via flight operations bus, aircraft tail centric based performance for flight planning, fuel monitoring and performance optimization, automation capabilities, irregular operations recovery solutions, etc.

WHAT’S NEXT?

As we have seen, behind the EFB there are a lot of different functions. Some of these were initially used at the aircraft because the tablets were attached to it.

But, now things have changed because tablets are mainly given to pilots to bring onboard (in some cases, known as the 2 + 2 model, airlines deploy both: tablets attached to the aircraft and tablets held by the pilots). Pilots who hold their own tablets can do much more than just executing the flight.

From home to home

For too long, the EFB has been considered as an ‘extra screen in a cockpit’. This point of view came from aircraft manufacturers that introduced EFBs as systems attached to the aircraft; supporting the pilot in execution of the mission onboard but only addressing what happens in the cockpit. In essence, the EFB is an electronic version of the pilot’s flight bag, used to carry onto to the plane items such as maps, documentation, take-off and landing performance spreadsheets…

When the electronic versions of these things came along, the flight bag became an Electronic Flight Bag. But the pilot’s mission is wider than simply the time spent in the cockpit. It is not even only from gate to gate, but from home to home. It starts well before the

mission (to prepare it) and ends well after (to debrief it); and much of what it involves is not especially carried out on board: • Procedures must be known before the flight.

• The mission should be prepared independently of the flight folder itself, by looking at regulations in the overflown countries, studying the characteristics of all airports around the possible tracks and having a good idea of the political situations of some overflown countries. In short, to consider all the environments that might affect the mission and which can be anticipated; this does not really depend on the track of the OFP (Operational Flight Plan). The idea is to anticipate any systemic threats that the mission might encounter and, therefore, consider means of mitigation.

• Finally, the pilot should consider the effective mission described by the flight folder.

During the flight, the EFB can effectively support the

mission by digitizing duties and processes that were previously done manually, and with digital documentation, such as Operational Manuals or eQRH (electronic Quick Reference Handbook), electronic checklists, performance calculations, charting, etc.

Post flights reports are usually done well after the end of the mission.

Pilots expect an augmented support

Beyond that, what pilots are waiting for, is augmented support for their mission: that is, something capable of giving them information that they could not have before, not simply improving information that they could have or just digitizing it.

As already stated, pilots need to be supported along their full journey, from home to home. It is not only about replacing paper processes; it is supporting many tasks around their mission that are today done via a phone call, text messages, emails, signatures on AIRCRAFT IT Operations • WINTER 2020 • 56

paper documents, exchanges via ACARS, etc.

Returning to the benchmark used earlier, as a pilot I want to: • Get access to my plan of actions, updated in real-time as changes are, nowadays, common things.

• Be connected to my company with news feeds instead of being informed through the press.

• Prepare a mission by reading airport briefings and previous flight folders for the same flight.

• Get the flight folder so that I can prepare it anywhere.

• Get the exact weather situation, forecast throughout the whole flight.

• Get the preliminary load-sheet, the final loadsheet and last minute changes messages.

• Get the final reliable passengers manifest.

• Confirm fuel decisions according to last minute changes.

• Grant jump seats.

• Be notified of a deported passenger and accept or reject his transportation.

• Make reports: in particular, safety related ones.

• Read about the latest safety events in the world to keep my safety situational awareness very high.

• Prepare a training session or a line-check by reading up to date training manuals.

• And more...

Many of these use cases above were not possible with paper-only technology or without involving too many resources. How might you show on paper charts the weather situation to be expected, every half an hour of a twelve hours flight? And yet, this is exactly what pilots need.

Even if, today, the information is coded on significant weather charts produced every three or six hours, what will be the situation at 4:30Z? We don’t know exactly because the static view is not adequate to interpolate a precise situation. It offers rough data so let’s clearly state as pilots that we don’t need that anymore.

In short, as a pilot, I want functions that augment my situational awareness by adding information that was impossible to get with paper processes.

Tablets are more than EFBs because they are used outside of the cockpit.

And with the extension of internet connectivity from the ground to the air, these tablets will benefit from continuous connectivity, from home to home.

CONNECTING

The industry is going around in circles because the business case for the installation of cockpit connectivity is not at all obvious to demonstrate. Two use cases are regularly mentioned: access to real-time or at least updated weather information, and communication with the MIS (Maintenance Information System) to postpone a technical problem on the aircraft upstream and thus anticipate its troubleshooting.

information updated. So, the global process should be that, without any request from pilots, the back-office should compute the best profile for the next two hours of flight, in line with the permanently updated environment conditions (weather data, other aircraft trajectories and foreseen profiles, weather conditions on arrival, number of passengers missed connections, Oceanic Clearance constraints…) and the current aircraft characteristics (Zero Fuel Weight, Fuel On Board, Flight Level, Mach…). When relevant, the new profile should be notified to pilots with the detailed strategy.

An example of a typical communication from the ground to the pilot might be: ‘We recommend that you postpone the climb to FL360 at 14:00Z and then reduce your Cost Index to 50, because the possible moderate turbulence at this level will then be behind you. Thanks to your early departure, the taxi time was shorter and your expected arrival time is 20 minutes ahead of schedule. Your OFP (Operational Flight Plan) has been recalculated because you are heavier than calculated in the initial OFP and too early on arrival. FL360 will be the optimum flight level when reducing the Cost Index to 50 to ensure an arrival closest to the H-10/H range.’

Why do we need connectivity? Connectivity for the cockpit is to make it possible to leave functions on the ground without impacting the operation of the aircraft.

For example, should the function that optimizes the flight profile stay on the ground? Typically, yes; because this function integrates all parameters and produces a recommendation to the crew. No need for this function to be offline on an EFB. By its very nature, it needs connectivity to get the environment

A connected tablet is like a connected smartphone. Users of smartphones do many things they didn’t do before just because they have access to new useful functions and because it is simpler than ever. Thus, the operational efficiency gained by giving a connected tablet to a pilot and/or installing an aircraft attached connected EFB goes beyond just replacing paper-based functions.

That’s why it is difficult to demonstrate a business case by simply comparing things pilots do now with the same things they will do with a connected tablet.

In fact, they will do more than they do today, so airlines should stop spending too much time trying to demonstrate an ROI (Return On Investment): it is evident that benefits will be there. The question is not ‘why’ should we give pilots a tablet but ‘when’?

Collaborating

Collaboration and information sharing will bring further improvement in operational efficiency and flight safety. On the road, sharing unusual conditions using Waze for instance supports safety. In the sky, it’s exactly the same, but we are still unable to easily share information between all aircraft in a given area: turbulences, effective wind shear conditions on final, aircraft sensed wind turning on final transmitted to the following aircraft, temperature inversion after take-off, real braking capabilities on a runway...).

Imagine a performance calculation directly powered by real weather and runway conditions, shared by other aircraft that just landed a few minutes before. Don’t you think it would be much better than trying to assess the runway conditions with this kind of message?

Sharing primary parameters with others may contribute to the overall efficiency of the system. The wind actually experienced by previous airplanes can inform a pilot to change their ECON Mach. But, this requires a permanent and affordable communication channel between cockpits, whether or not that involves ground relays.

Let’s take another example. In flight, we are used to actualizing the initial airports weather data we got by reading the flight briefing package. This is done by requesting METARs (METeorological Aerodrome Reports) or ATIS (Automatic Terminal Information Service) for all relevant airports around the aircraft position.

We are expecting an EFB solution that, thanks to its connectivity, can update the weather data automatically according to the position of the aircraft. It seems to be something easy to deliver, but it is not yet a reality for airline pilots. Moreover, operationally interpreting a METAR takes time, because we need the context to understand the text. What are the available runways (lengths)? What are the possible approaches and their minima? What are the NOTAMs impacting the airport suitability (closed runways, instrument approaches H/S, minima…)? Without all this information, the METAR does not serve the real need which is, ‘if needed, can I land there and in which conditions? And, depending on the situation, what priority shall I give to this airport compared to others?’

CONCLUSION

Historically, the EFB has been closely attached to the aircraft and the mission of pilots in the cockpit. But things changed in 2010 when the iPad was released and was seen as a fantastic enabler for innovation in aviation operations. Tablets are now mainly given to pilots to support their mission. Airlines may still deploy

aircraft attached tablets as primary EFBs onboard while the pilot held tablets serve as backup of primary means but also outside of the cockpit, as powerful assistants.

Many functions can now be developed to enhance the situational awareness a pilot should have before and during his mission, and to optimize it while being executed. Some new functions didn’t exist with a paper process. Through helping pilots in their duties, the EFB doesn’t only improve existing tasks already executed by pilots. By augmenting the information, it definitely improves safety and operational efficiency. Regulators should certainly consider this a little bit more.

In all of this, user experience is key, both for pilots that are more motivated than ever to do their best, and thus for the airline. The EFB should no longer stand for an Electronic, but for an Enhanced Flight Bag, not only from gate to gate but from home to home.

Günther Schindl: Günther Schindl, co-founder and CEO of the ASQS group. ASQS stands for Advanced Safety and Quality Solutions.

Aircraft IT: How did ASQS get started?

GS: When safety management systems were planned to become mandatory in 2008, I was working as compliance monitoring manager for

an aircraft operator. It was back then, when we identified the need for a web-based platform — something not existing at that time. So, my two partners and I decided to found the company ASQS with the target to develop an integrated safety and quality management software made by people with hands-on experience in the aviation industry. Initially focusing on the executive and business aviation market, the increasing interest in our software

IQSMS by airline operators made us expand our offer to the entire aviation industry. In eleven years, we grew from a three-man-show to a global software provider with more than 200 aviation customers worldwide.

GS: We work in a very complex industry. The attraction of aircraftrelated software for me is to support aviation companies in reducing this

GS: Our greatest technical achievement is definitely IQSMS, our core product itself. Since 2009 it has steadily grown and continuously evolved to become the software it is today, a suite of 10 modules designed to support our customers in their daily operational business. We are particularly proud of our IQSMS offline applications, which enable customers to be even more flexible by using IQSMS everywhere at any time, online and offline.

Aircraft IT: What has been ASQS’s greatest business achievement to date, and why?

GS: I think the entire ASQS history is a great business achievement. We started very small, with only a few

thousand euros in our bank account, a vision and a vague idea of how to make this vision reality. What we did have from day one was a passion for our product IQSMS and the will to work hard to make the aviation industry safer. This will to work hard and to provide our customers with outstanding support and great products is still part of the ASQS DNA today.

Aircraft IT: What have been ASQS’s disappointments and what have you learned from them?

GS: Luckily, we haven’t had many big disappointments so far. A real setback was that due to the pandemic we were not able to open an ASQS office in Mexico City this year. Although all preparations had been completed, it was not possible to pursue our plans, since the crisis hit our industry really hard. For economic reasons we had to postpone this project, find a

different location and are now very happy to announce that we will open a third office in Calgary, Canada.

What we’ve learned from this particular setback? Add pandemic to your risk assessment and always have a plan B.

Aircraft IT: What will be the next big thing in Aviation IT? GS: I think in our sector it will be artificial intelligence. The aim of future software will be to support users more effectively by allowing them to mainly focus on and invest available resources in situations that pose a high risk to the organization. Ideally everything else will be done by the software. This is what in my opinion will also be the next challenge for us at ASQS.

Aircraft IT: What is new on ASQS’s development horizon?

GS: We are currently working on IQSMS 4.0 which will be released in 2022. The new version of our system is the biggest overhaul to IQSMS since its creation in 2009 and includes a new database and a fresh, new and even more intuitive user interface.
