A

t the beginning of this year, very few people had heard of the Coronavirus family of viruses and now, just nine or so months later, everybody knows about the latest member of the family, COVID-19. That’s how rapidly things can change. But while past viruses and other diseases have come and gone or simply failed to spread in to the wider population, COVID-19 has caused a true pandemic and the science consensus is that it won’t be going any time soon. That means that the disruptive practices that we’ve had to implement in order to live with it in recent times will need to be developed into less disruptive processes that we can implement in order to manage around COVID-19 in the long-term. This is as true for aircraft Operations as it is for any other sector.

One truism often cited in IT circles is that the best solution to today’s problem is usually a solution that is already up and running and successful. That’s not to decry the development of new solutions that make use of new capabilities and functionalities, it’s just to say that a challenge such as COVID-19 is immediate whereas new solutions might take months, probably years, to bring to market. So, a lot of thinking within the Operations IT sector has focused on how to apply

proven solutions to address the challenges of this new situation as well as looking forward to new processes that will ensure the long-term viability for the sector.

In this issue we have a great case study from Air Hong Kong about how that airline has implemented a new digital document management system to secure its long-term safety and compliance remits as well as to ensure that everybody always has the latest information. We also have the second parts of our two excellent white papers looking to the future. The first continues with how the EFB might develop with big data, artificial intelligence and machine learning.

The second considers the very exciting development of Trajectory Based Operations (TBO) and how it could transform aviation and air travel for the better.

Both developments have the potential to revolutionize how aircraft are operated and flown.

In late June 2020, NAVBLUE was pleased to announce that it has been selected to supply the data solutions for ‘Microsoft Flight Simulator,’ the next iteration in the franchise scheduled for release this year. DocuNet Forms — supporting customers as they deal with new operational challenges.

Vistair Systems, a leader in the development of aviation document, safety and quality management solutions, has, in mid-July 2020, released an upgrade to its DocuNet Forms module to further support aviation customers during this time.

NAVBLUE launches RunwaySense, enabling airlines and airports to assess and report runway conditions using the aircraft as a sensor NAVBLUE was pleased to announce, in mid-July 2020, the launch of the RunwaySense service, allowing airlines and airports to accurately assess and report runway conditions by using Airbus aircraft as sensors. Airports can use the aircraft data to inform their runway clearing operations, better timing runway clearing activities or targeting application of de-icing chemicals. Furthermore, with the mandatory ICAO Global Reporting Format (GRF), due to come into effect in November 2020, this data contributes to airports reporting requirements with accurate, near real-time runway performance information.

Airlines can use this data to better monitor their operations as they share the data their aircraft have generated internally, or access data generated by other operators.

RunwaySense is based on BACF+ (Braking Action Computation Function), software released by NAVBLUE in 2019 on the Airbus single-aisle family.

BACF+ generates a message on the aircraft, accurately reporting the condition of the runway it’s just landed on, against the FAA’s Take-off and Landing Performance Assessment (TALPA) Runway Condition Assessment Matrix (RCAM). This data, already available to the pilot through the MCDU (Multi Function Control and Display Unit), will now be accessible from NAVBLUE via dedicated channels which can be selected to best fit the user’s operational requirements.

Users will be able to access the data via a NAVBLUE web-based tool or an Application Programming Interface (API) allowing them to integrate the data feed into their existing software

platforms.

Vistair launch new forms innovation to support struggling aviation sector Enhanced aviation document management innovations developed

by Vistair will support EASA COVID-19 requirements and increase an airline’s operational efficiency.

Vistair Systems, a leader in the development of aviation document and safety management solutions, has recognised the need to fast track innovations that will help the aviation sector to survive. Aero K Airlines, a low-cost startup carrier based in South Korea, announced in late July 2020 that it has entered into a partnership with Skytrac Systems to enable global mobile data coverage to its fleet of Airbus A320s operated on domestic and international flights.

The airline is in the final stages of obtaining an aircraft operating certificate with plans to begin domestic flights from Cheongju International Airport next month. Under the partnership, Aero K’s fleet is being equipped with Skytrac’s Dynamic Air Link 200 (DAL-200) wireless communications and data technology that provides cellular data coverage in more than 200 countries.

“Our goal is to become the leading airline in Northeast Asia, and that means investing in our pilots and infrastructure so we can optimize efficiencies right out of the gate,” said Aero K Airlines Chief Operating Officer Stuart Cross.

“We are pleased to select SKYTRAC due to their position as a market leader in intelligent connectivity.”

Cellular data service on Aero K’s A320s will be enabled by Skytrac’s partnership with GigSky, first announced in a January 29 press release. That partnership integrated enterprise-level SIM card technology

provided by GigSky into the purchase of data plans sold by Skytrac to give operators the ability to improve data sharing across their fleet. The service will also auto-select the best performing national mobile network based on where Aero K aircraft are operating.

When the GigSky partnership was announced, Ruben Stepin, director of GADSS and airline business development for Skytrac, described it as “a significant development as instead of operators utilizing and expensing personal or local SIM cards, an organization can now manage all their SIMs from one location, using one supplier and one giant pool of data for seamless global data connectivity.”

Aero K pilots will also use Skytrac’s mobile data coverage for pre- and post-flight electronic flight bag (EFB) cockpit connectivity. Flight crews can also use tablet devices to access flight plans, weather reports, eTechLogs, and charting map updates using the new cellular data service, Skytrac said.

The Aero K partnership is the latest new airline adoption announced by Skytrac in recent weeks, after confirming another new airline, Quebec-based OWG, will use its Satcom technology for a fleet of Boeing 737-400s.

AeroLogic brings digital innovation into the cockpit as first cargo airline to implement Greentech solution OptiClimb AeroLogic, the joint-venture between DHL Express and Lufthansa Cargo operating 777 freighters, announced in late August 2020 that it has innovated and become the first cargo airline to implement OptiClimb, a unique fuel saving digital solution developed by Safety Line, that recommends customized speeds to pilots for each climb.

Although the Covid-19 crisis has had less impact on cargo operations, it has further enhanced the general drive for more sustainability in aviation.

AeroLogic is more than ever committed to proactively save fuel and reduce CO2 emissions. Climbout is one of the most fuel-consuming phases of the flight, especially for AeroLogic’s fully loaded 777Fs. Thereby, it offers the most potential for savings, but it is also the most complex phase, with many parameters changing simultaneously as the aircraft ascends.

Using machine learning to optimize climb speeds

Machine Learning allows airlines and aircraft operators to address this complexity. By building performance models for each aircraft based on historical flight data, OptiClimb allows users to analyze thousands of scenarios taking into account

individual aircraft performance and accurate 4D weather forecasts to recommend optimal climb speeds to pilots for each flight. Further to an OptiClimb trial involving more than 1,000 flights, AeroLogic has demonstrated average fuel savings of 234kg per climb, which could translate into a fleetwide carbon footprint reduction of at least 5,000 tons of CO2 per year.

In addition to implementing OptiClimb, AeroLogic is working with Safety Line to explore further flight optimization opportunities in all flight phases. For instance, AeroLogic was the first cargo operator to successfully trial OptiDirect, a solution that recommends shortcuts to pilots based on historical tracks flown and forecasted weather on the route. According to Managing Director Joe Moser, “Within AeroLogic, sustainable operations is a priority for all. Korea’s Jin Air transforms airline operations with ARMS® Singapore company LAMINAAR Aviation Infotech revealed at the end of July 2020 that its implementation team has delivered LAMINAAR’s proprietary ARMS® applications software solution to Korean carrier Jin Air. The critical final phases of deployment were managed in the middle of the Covid pandemic, and delivered remotely from locations in India and Singapore, with not a single engineer or project manager on site in Seoul. The airline is also using LAMINAAR’s tablet-based ARMS® on the TAB® components: Electronic Flight Bag (EFB), Electronic Flight Folder (EFF) for the flight crew, and the ARMS® on Mobile® (AOM) smart mobile interface for the workforce.

Honeywell Forge reaches 10,000 Aircraft one year after launch In early August 2020, Honeywell welcomed Ural Airlines as a customer and user of Honeywell Forge Flight Efficiency, a fully integrated advanced analytics platform. Ural Airlines launched Honeywell’s fully integrated analytics platform to utilize aircraft data and drive airline profitability, all from a single dashboard. This also marks a major milestone for Honeywell Forge as it is now being used on over 10,000 aircraft, one year after its launch in June 2019.

Shortcuts in the sky In August 2020, Safety Line obtained a patent for OptiDirect, an in-flight digital solution suggesting direct routes to aircraft pilots to reduce fuel burn and emissions. With the aim to enable airlines to save more fuel and further reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, Paris-based start-up Safety Line obtained the patent for its OptiDirect solution which is already operational on all Air France and Transavia flights.

Airline Flight Plans are often very constrained and do not always follow the shortest or most optimal route, taking into account winds and temperatures encountered along the flight. Once the aircraft is at cruise level, pilots have the possibility to request to ATC to grant them a ‘direct route’ or shortcut to save time and fuel. However, until now, they did not really have any tools in the cockpit to know which shortcuts have been previously flown and how much fuel and ett-aviation_ad-aircraftIT_PRINT.pdf

time could be saved based on the weather conditions of the flight.

Thanks to machine learning algorithms applied to historical flight data, OptiDirect will recommend shortcuts that have been flown before, with an indication of the time and fuel that could be saved, thereby enabling pilots to make more efficient requests to ATC. This is actually the 6th patent obtained by Safety Line, including a related patent in 2015 for OptiClimb, a further solution from Safety Line that optimises the climb phase thanks to machine learning performance models for each tail, an innovative technology exclusive to Safety Line.

Lufthansa Systems announced, in mid-August 2020, the migration of Eurowings, a longstanding Lido Flight 4D customer, to the cloud delivery platform Global Aviation Cloud. Going forward, the Lufthansa Group’s point-to-point airline will use the flight planning solution from Lufthansa Systems as a cloud service. The cloud environment enables Eurowings to optimize routes in a more flexible and reliable way. The integration of services into the Global Aviation Cloud was developed specifically to meet the needs and security standards of airlines, particularly now as they face increased complexity due to the global pandemic.

Vistair continues to support Loganair’s document management Loganair announced in late August 2020 that it has chosen to continue its relationship with Vistair’s DocuNet to provide a coherent, single point of control for managing all operational documentation including OEM data for their ATR fleet. Loganair, known as Scotland’s Airline, was founded in 1962 and is one of the UK’s longest established airline operations. Since that time, its route network has grown to encompass over 40 routes to and from Scotland, the Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Norway and Ireland, making it the UK’s largest regional airline. In 2018, they introduced the ATR42 to the fleet, forming part of the airline’s future operational plans under the Loganair brand.

Vistair has worked in partnership with Loganair since 2012, when DocuNet was first implemented to support publication of its OEM paper manuals. In 2018, Loganair invested in paperless technology by rolling out 6th generation iPad devices for its pilots and crews to serve as mobile EFBs to support sustainability, operational efficiency and to improve flight operations.

This agreement strengthens the existing relationship and continues to provide a document management platform with a single point of control and superior usability for end-users. In addition, DocuNet facilitates the ability to leverage structured data across their mixed fleet, to drive further efficiencies throughout

Air France chooses SkyBreathe® eco-flying solution to reduce fuel burn and CO2 emissions In late August 2020, Air France continued its efforts in terms of innovation for carbon reduction by partnering with OpenAirlines, the leading global provider of fuel efficiency solutions. Under the agreement, OpenAirlines will continuously analyze the data of thousands of daily flights by deploying its eco-flying solution SkyBreathe® – which was developed in partnership with Transavia France, an Air France Group company – to identify fuel-saving opportunities to maximize Air France’s operational efficiency and thus minimize costs and carbon emissions.

This new initiative is part of Air France’s global commitment to reducing its environmental footprint through its fleet renewal, its piloting or ground handling practices, the use of biofuels, or its

partnership with the Solar Impulse foundation aimed at developing innovative sustainable solutions for aviation. Air France has set an objective for 2030 to reduce its CO2 emissions per passenger/kilometer by 50%, compared to 2005.

SkyBreathe® was one of the first innovative solutions to be labeled by the Solar Impulse Foundation. The software taps into the latest digital technologies by using sophisticated Big Data Algorithms, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning. It automatically analyzes billions of data records to identify the most relevant saving opportunities and provides a series of recommended actions that can reduce the total fuel consumption by up to 5%.

ASQS expands internationally with opening a customer support office in Canada As part of its international expansion plan ASQS will open a new customer support office in Calgary, Canada, by the end of this year, to strengthen its global presence and to improve customer support availability. The planned branch office in Calgary, announced in late August 2020, will be ASQS’ third office alongside its headquarters in Vienna, Austria, and a branch in Bangkok, Thailand, allowing the aviation software provider to expand its international network and to provide direct customer support services to clients and prospects based in the North American and Latin American region.

e see this article as a great opportunity to share the experience at Air Hong Kong of going paperless and, especially, of digitizing their system using Web Manuals. But first, as some readers will not be familiar with Air Hong Kong, we’ll start with a brief introduction to the business.

AIR HONG KONG

Air Hong Kong is a small cargo business founded in 1986 in Hong Kong. The business has, in recent years, gone through a number of transformations including being bought by Stanly Ho, the ‘Casino King’ before, in 2002, being acquired by Cathay Pacific. At the end of 2002, DHL bought 40 percent of the business, rebranded Air Hong Kong and signed a fifteen-year joint venture agreement. The airline started with a freighter version of the Boeing 707 and then a small fleet of Boeing 747-F types, the last of which was retired in 2018.

The fleet now consists of ten Airbus A300-600F and A330-300 types mainly operated for DHL Aviation but with a couple operated by ASL Airlines Ireland.

Air Hong Kong serves thirteen major cities in Asia from the Hong Kong hub carrying mainly DHL Express cargo and a little general cargo. This is the network (figure 1).

THE PAPERLESS JOURNEY

And now to the main purpose of this article which is to share the journey to paperless operation for Air Hong Kong. Atila first heard about the EFB (Electronic Flight Bag) in 2009 at an Aircraft Commerce conference in Bangkok and found it so exciting a concept that he went back, reported on the development to the DFO (Director Flight Operations) and COO (Chief Operating Officer), proposing that Air Hong Kong adopt EFB technology to which they agreed but asked for a business case. The challenge was how to make a business case? Atila researched business case techniques and made a case for category 2 EFB for Air Hong Kong. But after all the studies, research and so on, the project had to stop as it was too expensive. Air Hong Kong is a small operator with a simple operation with no cabin crew, not even a dispatch function – pilots dispatch themselves. However, Atila was not discouraged and continued attending Aircraft Commerce conferences and learning about EFB until 2015 when the tablet was introduced for use in the EFB environment so that EFB could be installed on an iPad, Samsung Tablet or Microsoft Surface.

With this change, the EFB project was restarted and, in 2016, all Air Hong Kong pilots were given iPads. For two years, they were looking for applications and the right mounting for the aircraft then, in early 2018, the airline started an EFB trial. At the start of 2019, approval was granted by the Hong Kong CAD (Civil Aviation Department) for Air Hong Kong’s EFB using Navblue eChart as the chart type B software and Web Manuals for the manual.

However, the journey did not end there, as the EFB solution (figure 2) shows. It’s very simple with RAM suction cups and Pivot cover, a simple solution but it does the job. Figure 3 shows the next project at Air Hong Kong which is EFF (Electronic Flight Folder) with an in-house Cathay Pacific application which has also been approved and which pilots at Cathay Dragon are already using: it will next be adopted for Air Hong Kong following a trial in early 2020 and, if approved, Air Hong Kong will start using the application. It basically digitalizes all flight plans, NOTAM and weather.

After the EFF project, the next project will be the eTech Log (ETL/ ELB). There is still some way to go on Air Hong Kong’s journey to digitalization but hopefully, by the end of 2020, the airline will be completely paperless.

WORKING WITH THE DIGITAL MANUAL

In figure 4 is Air Hong Kong’s old system for managing manuals, working with paper; as readers will know, it generates a lot of work and can take up to a month to revise a paper manual.

The revisions need first to be recorded and those notes handed to

Publications who, in turn, will draft them into a revised copy and return that, in the case of Air Hong Kong, to Atila who will make further adjustments, send them back for re-drafting and to be returned again… Then each changed part of the manual has to be seen by the departments that it affects and they’ll come back with more corrections. It’s a lengthy process and, because of this, Air Hong Kong would often hold a number of revisions until there was enough material to make a more complete manual update.

Using Web Manuals, this process has been cut to three or four days with the owners of a manual able to go to the system right away and themselves change the content within the manuals; and that is all that needs to be done. The rest is completed automatically by the system with all the appropriate notations included to ensure that the right revision is automatically replicated wherever and in whatever manuals it is applicable. Then, after the originator has completed the change, they’ll put the document into

review; the reviewer will be notified and can go to the system to review the changes right away. Following the review, the reviewer will release the document to the final proofer, who will proof it, approve it and clear it for publication. It’s a very simple system: once

the manual owner has clearance from the proofer, they can press the publish button and, within minutes, all pilots will receive notifications by email and can read the changed copy and content there and then.

WORKING WITH IOSA (IATA OPERATIONAL SAFETY AUDIT)

Air Hong Kong has probably gone through five IOSAs so far. In the past, to deal with the IOSA Auditor, it would be necessary to have a table covered with documents, paper and books; then, to open the manuals one at a time which was very time consuming. And sometimes when the auditor asked for something not on the airline’s checklist, it was quite a job to find the requested information in the manuals. But, with Web Manuals, everything is automatic. So for the last IOSA at air Hong Kong, Atila only had to have a screen in front of him with the Web Manuals Compliance Library to simply use links to those parts that had to be shown to the auditor. As they went through the ISARPS (IOSA Standards And Recommended Practices) they only had to click on the relevant link to bring up the right screen. There is no paper anymore and the process is very efficient and fast.

THE CHALLENGE OF STAYING COMPLIANT

Compliance is something that arises daily in our sector. Here, we want to share with readers not only an understanding of that challenge but also the challenge of using inefficient tools leading, in the end, to qualified people doing unqualified things. So we just want to talk about the journey, the revision process that arises every day and traditionally looks rather like this (figure 5).

The first thing is that you need to stay up-to-date with the latest published regulations by going to websites and other sources to see what has changed and/or is new compared to the old version in order that you can understand what that change entails. With that knowledge, you’ll update the compliance

reference list in Excel to make sure that you have the right information according to what has changed or been added. The next stage is to undertake all the editing in Word, a lot of manual work to ensure that the structure is correct and being sure to update the revision bars and the revision number, and the revision dates. This is something that is done, of course, recurrently, depending on how many updates you do. Then after the updates have been done it is also important to remember the cross-references, the links to the other documents that will be affected by the change – usually using a manual list to keep track.

Next is to edit all the affected pages, table contents, the Change Log and list of affected pages; make the changes and also update the Revision Bars once again.

Publish the PDF is the next job and to update the cross references to the documents to complete the compliance linking.

Before publishing the documents or generating the PDF, depending whether each chapter is in a stand-alone file, it has to all be emailed for review. Hopefully the reviewer will open and review the document and offer feedback, as requested by the compiler, which might, in turn, mean returning to the Word files to re-edit them followed by the whole content updating process, making all the updates, removing the Revision Bars and setting up new ones. That’s all before continuing once more through the rest of the journey, everything mentioned above, to hopefully be able to replace the old manual with the revised one before sending an email to all recipients saying ‘here is a new revision that you need to check out’ which, hopefully, they will do. This is a journey that Web Manuals hears about every day: it is what is meant when they talk about the challenge of bad tools.

We need also to keep in mind, ‘where are we today and where will we be in two years’ time?’ Maybe ‘goal fulfilment in quality work’ is something we can deal with today but, again, what will it look like in two years’ time? The ‘workload within current capacity’ might be OK today but companies always strive to grow and do better so, once more, what will it look like in two years? And do we need to plan for that? For the implementation times on new revisions: we have

Mike Peters, CEO of Evoke Systems shares how a focus on innovation, data and design improves efficiency for airline customers and keeps Evoke ahead of the curve Mike Peters, Chief Executive Officer of Evoke Systems, joined the team four years ago. Alongside founding members Captain Mark Linney and Dr Craig Howard, he has led the strategy to achieve the rapid growth of Evoke through their market-leading software solutions. A seasoned strategist, Mike has previously worked in senior management for HSBC, Price Waterhouse Coopers and Andersen/Accenture in corporate finance M&A, strategic and operational consulting and various commercial and finance director roles.

Aircraft IT: Your name, your job title and the name of the business?

Mike Peters: Mike Peters, CEO of Evoke Systems.

Aircraft IT: How did Evoke get started?

MP: Evoke was founded at a time when the internet was still in its infancy and consumer software operating systems were considered unreliable.

Founding members Dr Craig Howard, an expert in data mining, and Captain Mark Linney both visualised the potential safety, commercial and practical benefits of the paperless cockpit, especially as Mark’s arms were tired carrying his heavy Pilot’s case up the aircraft stairs! The company began with a DTI Smart Award to conduct a feasibility study into

the concepts of electronic flight operations systems, with the nine-month project establishing the technical feasibility of the system and requirements of Pilots, Cabin Crew and Regulators, as well as highlighting the challenges and high costs faced by airlines in communicating with a widely-based and highly-mobile workforce.

From there, EFOS was born, and Evoke began providing EFB software through the Flight Management Suite. Over the years further development has seen the growth of the company and the introduction of the EFOS Training Management Suite and the EFOS Leave Management Suite; both unique in the capabilities they offer Aviation clients.

MP: Evoke founder Mark Linney remains a Captain for a British long-haul carrier, so the passion for aviation runs right through the business. Through harnessing Dr Craig Howard’s data mining expertise, the duo realised that they could create software that would significantly improve operating efficiency for airline customers.

MP: The ‘just-in-time’ efficiency requirement, especially for low-cost carriers, lends itself well to the lean operating functionality of our EFOS

product. The company’s ‘different by data design’ ethos has driven us to provide software which delivers data accuracy, data validation and commercial data analysis to maximize efficient operations. This was never more relevant than for the current ‘Covid’ times we find ourselves in, with access to dependable data essential to allowing effective decision making.

Aircraft IT: What has been Evoke’s greatest technical achievement to date and why?

MP: It’s a close call between the development of the iPad app for the EFOS Training Management Suite and the introduction of the EFOS Leave Management Suite.

The EFOS Leave Management Suite was designed to improve crew morale surrounding leave booking processes and reduce resource-heavy administration teams within airlines. It processes thousands of leave requests within minutes to provide instant feedback to crew members, allowing for transparency surrounding the sometimes delicate situation of crew leave requests. The dedicated iPad app for the EFOS Training Management Suite was developed to provide the simplicity of the TMS in an offline capacity, allowing trainers to use the system during simulator and line training sessions. The full functionality of our Course Management module is available through the app, allowing for candidate qualifications to be automatically updated and providing powerful opportunities for training managers and administrators to easily track candidate progress through courses. Their training history can also be accessed via the app, providing trainers with a holistic view of their performance.

Aircraft IT: What has been Evoke’s greatest business achievement to date and why?

MP: Following implementation of the EFOS Training Management Suite into one of our largest airlines to replace an error-prone paper-based system, we managed to reduce form error rates from in the

region of 20% to just 0.035%. This provided a six-month payback on the EFOS TMS just from the error saving alone. These affirmation statistics are tracked for all of our customers and used to underpin the cost benefit of the EFOS Product Suites, identifying the very short payback benefits available following implementation.

Aircraft IT: What have been Evoke’s disappointments and what have you learnt from them?

MP: The Covid-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the industry, devastating airlines overnight as the world ground to a halt. Starting with the sad news that long-term customers Flybe had collapsed into administration in early March, we watched in dismay as the pandemic intensified, threatening the very existence of many of our customers. As the Evoke office decamped to work from home, we were acutely aware that the horizon of the aviation industry looked extremely bleak.

Alongside our trusted clients, we closely monitored regulatory changes, adapting quickly and efficiently to license extension requirements, and implementing these changes within 24-48 hours for our customers. Real life is about reacting quickly, creatively and professionally to the challenges at hand, especially where they could not have been envisioned. The crisis has reaffirmed the crucial importance of having training data within a training management system when needing to react with critical real-time data to facilitate rapid decision making, as well as reiterating the resilience of the aviation industry.

Aircraft IT: In a sentence, how would you summarize what Evoke does for aviation customers?

MP: We provide innovative software solutions exclusively to the aviation industry across three customer proven product suites, maximizing data automation and validation opportunities through our AIRCRAFT IT Operations • SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2020 • 47

intelligent and deterministic data-driven software functionality.

Aircraft IT: What is new on Evoke’s development horizon?

MP: We are currently working with Captain Steve Deverall, an experienced airline training manager, on an innovative EBT solution designed to assist airlines in implementing and managing an EBT program through the EFOS Training Management Suite. The EBT solution will enable Airlines to demystify the transition to EBT and provide the training forms and program builder to enable a swift set-up. This is currently in development with our customers and we hope to release further details of this exciting new project in the coming months.

Aircraft IT: What will be the next big thing in Aviation IT? MP: The change in approach to training within aviation will drive a requirement for a completely new approach. This especially includes the collation access and investigation of concordant approaches to competency evaluation. Moving from the world of checklists to competency and behavior scenarios demands highly effective and flexible training forms and resultant data construction. For Evoke we are already seeing Airlines contact us, realizing how important systems and accompanying structured data are to better enable informed decision making and impact assessment.

WHAT PILOTS WANT

What are the basic needs of a pilot in terms of EFB applications? Let’s identify some of them by using the famous ‘As a pilot, I want…’ identifier from the Agile method.

• As a pilot, I want documentation (i.e. my operational manuals) to be easy to synchronize and access thanks to a great user interface and an efficient search engine.

• As a pilot, I want charts with ‘own ship’ position, both on ground and in flight; a basic need that has not yet been widely achieved. As you know, we use enroute, departure and approach, taxi and parking charts. Today’s solutions roughly correspond to paper solutions where all these charts are distinct. We have the enroute chart in the EFB interface, which is interactive and much better than a paper chart but we have to switch to the approach, taxi and parking charts when needed. That’s not yet a seamless experience.

• As a pilot, I also want specialized calculators, all the applications that, up until now, have been paper based. For instance, a take-off and landing performance calculator. Any pilot having used the paper tables to compute V1, VR, and V2 speeds to take-off on a contaminated runway with one brake INOP (inoperative) knows exactly how such a calculator on an EFB has the potential to change his life and the safety of the flight. I have never seen two pilots having the same results when using a paper take-off performance table: but I have never seen two pilots taking off with two EFBs giving different results.

• As a pilot, I want more, with applications that do much more than replace paper. Car drivers have Waze, pilots want enablers too. Connectivity between aircraft and ground servers is the key to get updated data during a pilot’s full journey.

• As a pilot, I want more than a simple access to my documentation. When do I mainly need to read my documentation? When I am not flying the aircraft.

Have you ever seen a pilot learning procedures when flying? No: that’s done well before starting the engines. It is something we do at home. And, for that, we need more than a simple PDF reader. We need a system that helps us acquire the full knowledge required to handle an aircraft. We want to be able to customize our manuals, add notes or bookmarks. We want our personalization to be saved and retained when changing iPad. We also want it to be persistent from a version of a document to the new one. As a pilot, I don’t want to lose the work I have done when studying thousands of pages.

The initial training phase is not all. Manuals are always changing, thanks to regulation changes, fleet modifications or just evolutions; and, as a pilot, it is difficult to be aware of all these changes. I have to compare the current and future version of my operational manuals in order to take into account the main points of their revised versions at each AIRAC (Aeronautical Information

Regulation and Control) cycle, every 28 days. Moreover, it has to be done before flying: these revisions and updates cannot be learned about upon arriving at the airport. It is quite easy to consider a new procedure but it has always been difficult to forget the previous one. As a pilot, I need specific tools to be aware of the continuous evolution of limitations, procedures, either normal or abnormal, or patterns for instance.

When flying, how do I mainly use my documentation? In fact, not that much: all pilots would say that we don’t need our documentation to fly. But it’s mandatory to have it onboard. We do use it when looking for information on MEL (Minimum Equipment List) or CDL (Configuration Deviation List) items or when we have to perform an unusual procedure, such as a take-off in wind shear conditions. So, what we really need onboard is a very efficient search engine and an immediate access to some well-chosen pages, such as the one showing the pitch attitude and N1% to fly with airspeed unreliable.

More than a chart

What’s the difference between flying an airway enroute, and flying a STAR (Standard Terminal Arrival Route)? No difference: it’s flying between waypoints with altitude and/or speed constraints. We can understand that the enroute and approaches charts were different when represented on a paper. But why are they still different when digitalized? We expect a data driven charting solution, because it gives a far better user experience, that really makes sense for a pilot.

From cruise, I should be able to start descent without changing anything on my chart, then join the STAR and see the constraints by zooming in, then follow the final approach with all details needed to check my trajectory, and finally be able to taxi to the gate thanks to a maximum level of zoom giving me relevant information for this part of the flight. When changing to STAR, approach or landing runway, getting the details to check the FMS should not be a supplementary workload for pilots. It should be seamless.

On a taxi chart, I want to be able to easily identity a closed taxiway as stated in a NOTAM (NOTification to AirMen), such as this one: ‘TWY CB BTN RWY 13L/31R AND TWY C CLSD TO ACFT WINGSPAN MORE THAN 143FT NO SE TURNS ONTO TWY C’.

Today, some aircraft are equipped with an application dedicated to taxi, named AMM (Airport Moving Map). But in general, there is another application or another part of the charting application, to get all details about taxi procedures. We know why this situation occurs: at the beginning there was only a paper chart to taxi and then it became an electronic chart. Subsequently, AMM applications have been developed to show the own ship position on ground on a georeferenced chart of the airport. But now, we want all information in the same place. Otherwise we will have to multiply the number of screens we need to display information simultaneously.

More than a calculator

About take-off performance calculations: as stated above, pilots were very happy with the improvement gained when an electronic calculator was introduced to replace a manual and quite haphazard computation. But the main business case was not for pilots but for engine maintenance thanks to the more accurate computation that allowed the thrust to be reduced a little bit more during each take-off.

So, as pilots, we expect better situational awareness than just reading figures computed by a black boxed algorithm. That’s not an impossible dream: it could be a reality now. We expect an interface showing the runway with its intersections, the current position of the aircraft, NOTAMs affecting the runway length depicted as forbidden zones of work in progress for instance, and those affecting the climb-out areas due to new obstacles, described by an always difficult to assess text, to be replaced by a graphical representation. We expect the computed take-off distances (all engines, one engine out, etc.) displayed from the chosen intersection, versus the intersection we are currently taking off from. The idea is to have a better understanding of the take-off performances we can expect, before taking off, but also when lining up to avoid any gross error, such as taking off by night on an unexpectedly shortened runway. In other words, we expect a deeper connection between the real world and the tools available to pilots on their EFBs.

More with connectivity

In a world where aircraft are connected to what we may call ‘IntAirNet’, the Internet of the air, weather data could be updated in almost real time to provide a virtual augmented radar image of the weather situations in which and towards which the plane is flying. It could include turbulence reports made by other aircraft in the same area. When connected, the aircraft can be seen as a sensor, emitting data used in a virtuous circle by other aircraft in real-time. As a pilot, I don’t so much want an Electronic Flight Bag as an Enhanced Flight Bag fed by collaborative sources, where applications are sets of functions that enhance my situational awareness. A new level of operational efficiency and flight safety improvement will come from information sharing, collaborative algorithms and overall or individual gained experience. Big Data, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence are entering the game.

DELINEATING BETWEEN TWO PRIORITIES

Coming back to our example of the Airport Moving Map and the taxi chart, the point is that airframe OEMs need to decide if these two functions should be joined or separated. Onboard, there is a dedicated screen to display navigation information: the so-called ND (Navigation Display). Historically, it was dedicated to navigate in flight, but recent aircraft include navigation on ground on this display.

It clearly makes sense for a pilot but the information should be amended by real-time NOTAMs otherwise there is no chance that pilots have, in front of them, a good and current representation of the situation.

That’s funny because it took a number of years to

get the approval to have an Airport Moving Map application on a non-airworthiness certified platform, and now it may happen that this moving map comes back to the Navigation Display. Anyway, all this is just an example that does not change the question the industry has to solve: what is permitted and what is not on an EFB?

Functions to operate an aircraft

What are the principal functions a pilot carries out to operate an aircraft?

• ‘Fly’ refers to monitoring and controlling the aircraft flight parameters in order to achieve and maintain a desired flight path.

• ‘Construct & maintain situational awareness’ refers to building and maintaining a mental picture of the aircraft and its situation with respect to its environment, e.g. weather, terrain and obstacles, traffic, airspaces and country boundaries…

• ‘Support Mission’ refers to a pilot’s consultation of reference information and computation of

‘flight-related’ information, e.g. take-off and landing performances, mass & balance… and any other information supporting the flight. Together with actions performed before the flight or after the flight in relation to the flight.

• ‘Manage Logistics’ refers to the tasks non-related to the conduct of the flight.

Drawing a clear line to support innovation

Now, because an EFB is by definition a non-airworthiness certified platform, the industry has to decide what are the applications allowed on an EFB and what are those that should be forbidden. Drawing a clear delineation between the airworthiness certified world and the operationally approved one will boost innovation in the EFB domain. The tendency is to forbid any function used to substitute or duplicate the intended use of instruments or equipment required by airworthiness regulations, airspace requirements, or operational rules. But also, to forbid all uses intended to fly, to navigate, to communicate with ATC, and any function used as a primary means to monitor the real-time status of aircraft critical and essential systems, or to alert so that it requires immediate crew awareness and/or responses, or any use to control aircraft critical and essential systems.

You may think it is quite limitative but there is another way to see things. Stating clearly what is forbidden on an EFB, gives a chance to all other functions to be approved. This work is in progress by EUROCAE Working Group 106, on behalf of EASA. This work should support, rather than hinder, innovation.

display of erroneous output) of a function is higher than ‘minor effect on safety’, it would normally lead to a refusal for that function to be executed on an EFB. Thanks to some mitigation means, it is permissible to mitigate the severity effect of the two hazards (i.e. to reduce the impact, or increase likelihood to detect an error after it happens) if this severity is assessed as greater than minor. But now, after mitigation, if the severity is still greater than minor, i.e. there is a residual risk, it is possible to define prevention means to prevent the hazard from happening or reduce its likelihood. Once again, this opens the door for innovation; offering EFB software developers the opportunity to demonstrate the eligibility of their proposed new EFB functions to become an approved EFB function.

A few questions before we move on: should the industry allow…

• ADS-B data to be shown on an EFB for trajectory optimization purposes?

• A 3D virtual aircraft representation for a better pilot’s situational awareness in case of upset recovery?

• Crystal icing zones displayed on a map with own ship position, while it is still not detected by legacy radars?

These are all questions for the future. However, the industry has to decide more immediately on which side of the delineation they should fall. Part 3 in the next issue will look to future challenges and opportunities to ensure that EFB can meet what pilots and airlines need.

It will be very important to anticipate further developments of the EFB in future years in order to ensure that innovation in the cockpit continues. That’s why it is so important to draw this delineation between the avionics airworthiness certified world and the operationally approved software domain; but also to define a clear process to assess a candidate EFB function. One important stage has been reached about the assessment of a candidate EFB function: if the risk assessment outcome (regarding the two hazards: loss of the function and

PN: With the support of European Union research projects, StorkJet developed tail-specific performance models powered by artificial intelligence to help airlines tap into the full potential of big data. We’ve proven that the average error in fuel burn prediction is only a few kilograms per flight hour, which makes our results the most precise on the global aviation market. This technology was implemented into the newest StorkJet’s fuel efficiency software — fuelPro. Besides tracking over 30 fuel initiatives, airlines can accurately predict fuel consumption at different flight phases and atmospheric conditions to indicate the real saving potential. What is more, pilots can check the most optimum flight path for given conditions and compare it with their own flights to check where they can improve.

Aircraft IT: What has been StorkJet’s greatest business achievement to date, and why?

PN: The biggest business challenge was to enter the aviation market as a startup. While implementing innovation to the market you need to convince customers that your technology is better than existing ones and that you have the appropriate team, knowledge, funds, support etc. to cover their needs and ensure safety. All these steps were positively evaluated by big players in the aviation industry. Today, StorkJet is proud to have long-term cooperation with such airlines as LOT Polish Airlines, WizzAir or Volaris. What we can also boast about is that almost all airlines we cooperate with decide to

go for more than one service. That is why we put so much effort to keep them satisfied.

Aircraft IT: What have been StorkJet’s disappointments and what have you learned from them?

PN: In 2020, COVID has been the topic that essentially turned all the industry upside down. We learned however to look for a bright side to this situation. Thus, for StorkJet, due to a reduction of new implementations, COVID became a period for rapid research and development of new products and features.

Aircraft IT: In a sentence, how would you summarize what StorkJet does for aviation customers?

PN: Support airlines in saving time and fuel thanks to fully automatic and the most precise aircraft performance and fuel efficiency software.

Aircraft IT: What is new on StorkJet’s development horizon?

PN: After a warm welcome for StorkJet’s Aircraft Performance Monitoring (APM) based on the real data, at the beginning of 2020 we added a new product to our portfolio — fuelPro, the fuel efficiency platform.

We started with the development of over 30 fuel initiatives, making fuelPro very comprehensive analytical software. Application of the tail specific performance models into fuel efficiency initiatives results in a clear picture of saving potential and compliance. With fuelPro our customers see low-hanging fruits they were not able to see before.

emissions. At present pilots receive a tailor-made dashboard with intuitive statistics, including their individual performance, targets and knowledge base on improvement areas. Aircraft IT: What will be the next big thing in Aviation IT? PN: COVID will continue to hugely impact on the aviation IT market. Airlines will look at first for tools that bring savings. Profitability is the top priority next to safety, and there will be a huge focus on tools that optimize operations. Also, the current situation brings opportunities for IT providers to focus on new research projects instead of implementations. As a result, new areas of optimization can become available. There will be a huge focus on post-flight and in-flight solutions that improve operational efficiency.

n part 1, we looked at the challenges facing commercial aviation and suggested a future that could be achieved if the sector is prepared to be bold.

In this part, we’ll look at Trajectory Based Operations, the technologies that accompany it and how it could work.

Trajectory Based Operations (TBO) has been identified, conceptualised and designed to provide the mechanisms to keep the industry moving. Its success will rest on buy-in by every stakeholder in the customer journey ecosystem. As we step through its key objectives and operational nuances, think about how it’s going to change the way you do things, and whether it looks like the science fiction of earlier.

TRAJECTORY BASED OPERATIONS

There’s been a lot written about TBO, and it’s out there for everyone to see; so, this article will highlight a few key points to raise the tempo for airline Ops departments and to get them thinking. The high-level objective of TBO is game-changing for the industry if it can be achieved. While its concept is about making room for growth, its component tenets drive significant efficiencies for airlines if they are smart enough to grasp them (Figure 14).

Gate-to-gate, 4D trajectory management will mean just that. The flight plan will no longer be just ‘paperwork’ required to get airborne, and then requesting ‘direct to’ here or there, trying to shave a minute or two. Or for ATC to pick you off a SID (Standard Instrument Departure) and send you ‘direct to’ somewhere you don’t expect and, perhaps not even on the flight plan you filed in the first place. The flight plan and its iterative evolution in terms of route, altitude profile, speed and time will be sacrosanct.

TBO achieves its objectives by everyone sharing almost everything with everybody, and universal data exchange will be crucial to its success. Those with long memories will remember the epic failure the last time the industry tried that.

The concept is highly developed, even down to how the air around the globe will be sliced and diced, and how conflicting trajectories will be identified and managed from long-term schedule analysis to day-to-day and in-flight trajectory reoptimisation. Note: the term is ‘managed’; not ‘controlled’. ATC, Dispatch, Operations Control (NOCs) and the pilots will need to exist in a symbiotic relationship requiring three or four-way data exchange for the duration of the flight and before. The connected EFB will be crucial to TBO, and so will new smarter, intelligent, integrated and workload reducing applications, a contrast to the paper-centric paradigm that many applications follow today, will be fundamental to the success of TBO.

The concept is mature and is discussed often, but predominantly at very high levels of the air traffic management sector: the take-away is that very few airlines are talking about it yet. ATM organisations like Eurocontrol or NATS and the FAA are well advanced in their thinking about how it’s all going to work – for them.

As usual for the industry, implementation planning at the airlines is lagging for too many… most of the TBO component programs. Delving deeper, long and mid-term plans for TBO (Figure 14) won’t carry any earth-shaking revelations.

Most airlines publish their schedules a long way out for essential reasons. Airline’s schedule data will be analysed in the context of every other airline’s and mixed with additional information like airspace closure for events or military use.

Statistical weather and aircraft performance data will be thrown into the mix; iterative calculations will start running a year or more in advance to determine where long-term planning drives hotspots of capacity constraint and potential conflict. So far, so good, there is nothing too difficult.

Focusing on day of operations, however, things get different, quickly. The current ‘file and forget’ submission of flight plan procedure is about to change and become a more iterative process involving several players. Instead of Dispatch submitting the flight plan and leaving Air Traffic Control to sort out the aeroplanes, TBO will require submission of your flight plans, along with those of everybody else, into the TBO system. Flight plans and their trajectories in terms of route, altitude profile, speed and time will be crunched and initially, and as far as possible, de-conflicted before an aircraft leaves the gate. Authorised trajectories returned to airline dispatch centres could include the original flight plan, the original flight plan with some restrictions, or a completely new trajectory. Of course, Dispatch can reject and re-submit, but can you see how recursive that could become? It doesn’t end there: Eurocontrol documents show that the number-crunching currently requires hours to solve the trajectories for operations covering just one hour over a part of Europe during the summer peak. Imagine that on a more global scale.

Closer to home, Dispatch, Ops, the pilots and the fuelling contractors have different issues to solve. What happens if the authorised trajectory is materially different from the plan and changes in speed, flight level or route and cannot be accommodated by the fuel that’s already on board? What about getting the new flight plan to the pilots possibly as late as minutes before departure if changes in the submitted flight plan have been necessary? Many thoughts will turn straight to technology, which is undoubtedly cool stuff, but that’s the easy piece. What’s not simple is the human factors; alarm bells which should ring loudly. Whole new processes and procedures will need to be developed for the dispatch and departure process before we get to the technology required to support them.

Remember process and procedure come before technology; a nuance with which this industry often continues to struggle. The success of TBO is based on a few other requirements that will get airline management paying attention too and make it imperative that the C-office drives the whole organisation towards a TBO future.

Heed the warning because, if you miss it, it’s back to the number crunching, possibly a departure ‘sin-bin’ while that occurs, and even thinking through that provokes a headache. Where is the aeroplane? Will it need more fuel before the next take-off slot is offered? What about a new flight plan; what will that look like; connections…? What else? Have a look at the last point in Figure 15: does that make your stress level rise? It should.

Unfortunately, there isn’t enough space in this article to discuss all the ramifications for day-of-ops under TBO.

SWIM (SYSTEM WIDE INFORMATION MANAGEMENT)

There are several precursor elements to TBO. One is System Wide Information Management (SWIM) (Figure 16).

current generation flight planning systems cannot build optimum outcomes because of a lack of granularity in some of that data. Next-generation flight planning systems, no matter how advanced, will be restricted by those gaps. The list isn’t exhaustive, but I think you’d agree that we’ve got a lot of things to get done to make TBO work.

Like TBO, the concepts for SWIM are well advanced and, as with TBO, architectural nuance abounds. ‘Old is new again’ data standards development is driving towards the information-based data exchange that the industry tried to get right in the eighties, nineties and noughties. Again, though, planning and implementation are lagging, particularly by airlines. SWIM is one prerequisite for TBO, but there are a couple of others (Figure 17).

SWIM means sharing everything with everybody. Flight planning systems are evolving fast, and the data on which we’re all basing our flight plans must (should) be the same as the TBO hub uses to assess yours and everybody else’s flight plans. The trajectory information from your flight plans will also be shared with everybody else in the global SWIM environment to assist in your own planning. Aircraft performance, meteorology including wind, temperature and turbulence are among a list of things that we’ll be ingesting into our organisations’ systems before sending data out to the world in a format that everyone else’s systems can understand. Networks of integrated data, not integrated data networks will be needed to solve SWIM and TBO. That’s a crucial nuance and part of the problem that needs to be resolved.

We’re all using different products for our weather, and new digital Met data is in development by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Accuracy of wind and temperature is cruci al to accurate flight plans. Still, the WMO can only muster 40 or so (as of May 25 2020) airlines out of the whole industry to participate in its AMDAR (Aircraft Meteorological Data Relay) program. Even though, according to the WMO, AMDAR is the third most crucial input to forecast model accuracy globally.

Aircraft performance data is generated differently by airlines from data provided by the manufacturers, and it’s supposed to be standardised and digital too. Even

Performance-based navigation and performance-based planning were to be fully implemented in 2016. This year, while some regions have done better than others, global implementation is only about half-way there. Flight and Flow Information for a Collaborative Environment (FF-ICE) is a data-centric exchange of flight and flow information due to be fully implemented in 2025. Yet, few people in the airlines seem to have heard of it. In a straw-poll at a major industry conference in October 2019, one person out of a room of about 300 airlines and suppliers indicated they’d heard of it.

The electronic flight bag (EFB) started out as the ELS as far back as 1986. It disappeared because of a lack of specification, a business case and other reasons because of the way it was marketed by airframe OEMs. It was re-born as the EFB in 1992 and, since then, we’ve seen paper after paper discussing the problems finding

a business case. Indeed, Closed Loop was approached as recently as January and February this year by two European airlines still struggling and seeking (free) guidance on figuring out how to pay for it. EFB spent 27 years dying from a thousand paper cuts, ironically, the very media it seems so intent on emulating. By way of example, one airline project involving hundreds of aircraft was comfortable

that the resulting NPV (Net Present Value – a key metric used to gauge the value of projects to the bottom line of the whole organisation, and used to compare the bottom-line value of different projects) of their EFB project was about $2.5 million – before it went backwards by several times that amount because of what hadn’t been accounted for. Another EFB project handed its airline an NPV of $304 million; success and validation by any measure. It was cancelled because of departmental in-fighting about who should ‘own’ the project. The airline spent another 15 years and millions of dollars recursively researching around the edges trying to justify it again.

Thirty-four years later, digital data is a muddle of proprietary solutions. It suffered its own marketing failure when a noted airline IT department refused to allow its use because SGML was deemed an ‘unsupported application’ – even after the whole industry had adopted it as the basis of its information interchange standard.

Seriously folks, what’s it going to take?

TBO is the next cab off the rank. Will the industry tangle that up too, or will it get one right this time?

Indications are not good. There are already other ‘options’ being hawked that are limited in reach and effect, and benefit a few, not the whole. Unfortunately, however, these options will interfere with the holistic shared data and Air Traffic Management (versus control) aspects of the global concept, potentially weakening the Global TBO concept to the point it becomes untenable. Will sense prevail?

Re-read the last few paragraphs for an idea… And then consider airline priorities on the other side of COVID-19.

So much that is talked about in the industry these days is about achieving change, but what we keep seeing demonstrates why the airline industry suffers the abysmal rate of project failure that it does. It’s not because the people involved lack the ability; the airline industry has attracted brilliant minds. The only reasonable conclusion is that there is an inherent dysfunction in the way these programs are approached.

Closed Loop believes that the model of pushing technology towards ill-defined designs or outcomes is the culprit. Without far-reaching objectives, technologydriven programs at best achieve short-term expectations before falling into obsolescence and, with the accelerating rate of technology, that sweet spot becomes shorter by the day. Isn’t this just a way of saying, we’ve got to get the strategy right first?

How do we fix it and start moving to align the pieces of the puzzle? Mostly the discussion about TBO has, so far, not been by those that will have to deal with it day-to-day: that’s readers and the other visionaries within the airlines, airports and the broader industry. TBO is not the only game in town as far as efficiency, operational excellence, service delivery and industry capability and growth – let alone survival is concerned in the aftermath of the virus. However, it remains just as critical to emergence from COVID-19 as it was for industry existence at the end of 2019.

One would think TBO’s goals and nuances are almost in the realm of science fiction compared to our capability today. For TBO to work, a varied bunch of people will have to get connected and aligned on a strategic framework supported by richly integrated data so they can shape concept and nuance into executable outcomes. At the industry level, the fragmented, siloed and committee-based approaches to significant industry developments and the focus on technology as the panacea for everything has to change. Within airlines, the vertical nature of the organisation that drives myopic departmental posturing and technology first, business second, thinking will have to give way to the more horizontal perspective of the entire customer journey ecosystem. Information about the customer journey will have to be collected and connected in every respect. From the moment a potential customer begins searching for an itinerary, through the trip to the airport, through the airport, the air segment including airline, airport and ANSP touchpoints, and back again until the entire journey is complete. Yes, science fiction. Except that it’s not. Ask us how.

Managing NOTAMs Rod Tinnion, AIS and QA Officer at Bytron Aviation Systems sheds light on the dark art of managing NOTAMs The subject of NOTAM’s has always been controversial. Developed in the 1920s, they are still almost in the same format as they were one hundred years ago. Each flight can contain dozens of pieces of paper with the most critical information often buried under irrelevancies.

Rod Tinnion writes from experience of making use of NOTAMs. In my previous life as a short-haul commercial pilot, I generally flew four and sometimes as many as six sector days. Trawling through the required NOTAM paperwork to locate the relevant information was very time-consuming. Only last week I saw an operator had a flight pack (OFP) of 164 pages which included 140 pages of NOTAMs… I didn’t envy that pilot.

You don’t have to look far online to find topics

relating to what I’m going to call ‘NOTAM overload’. It certainly doesn’t take long to get a real sense of feeling towards this subject when you read blog posts that refer to NOTAMs as a problem. Surely this can’t be the case when talking about information that is so intrinsic to the safety of aircrews, aircraft and passengers alike?

The situation has become a significant discussion point and people are petitioning for changes to the NOTAM system. Changes are afoot. Particularly in the last twelve months, there have been clear signs that the wider industry and regulators are taking notice and looking at ways to address the NOTAM challenge. With no quick fix on the horizon, does that mean there will be no change to the current status quo until the possible re-invention of the NOTAM? a word — no.

Technology undoubtedly has the answer to this ongoing and ever-growing challenge. Although it may not be possible to change the current volume or layout of NOTAM updates, it certainly is possible to look at other ways to reduce the sheer quantity that appear in each crew briefing. To reduce the work involved in identifying problem NOTAMs and above all reduce the burden placed on both dispatch teams and aircrews working to deliver safe flying schedules on time every day.

A great example of how NOTAMs can embrace technology is how we do it at Bytron. The skybook NOTAM Manager uses real-time data to highlight relevant NOTAMs within briefing packages, cuts out inconsequential NOTAM information, reduces white noise and therefore saves time and effort. The importance of these notices is colour-coded, giving the user further clarity. There are even further refinements and filtration possibilities depending on the operator’s requirements.

The interim solutions are there but in terms of a long-term answer to simplifying NOTAM management… that’s a conversation for another time.
