afety underpins everything that happens in commercial aviation. And, as with every other aspect of flying, the more information that’s available and the more capability there is to use that information, the safer flying will be. Airlines want to keep their passengers safe plus, of course, they also want to ensure safe working conditions for their staff. But, as well as reputational issues, it makes good business sense to operate aircraft safely. Stelios Haji-Ioannou, founder of Low Cost Carrier easyJet, is famously quoted as saying, ‘if you think safety is expensive, try an accident.’ That is one reason why airlines and operators are super thorough about everything they do. If our selection of articles this issue has an eclectic flavor, that’s because they range across several key areas of practice but that thread of safety runs through each of them.

The EFB is a familiar part of most flight crews’ work place but the technology is not static. Brian Hint, an FAA Aviation Safety Inspector, contributes a really useful article for this issue that looks at how the FAA’s EFB policy is evolving, as EFB capabilities evolve, and looks closely at what would be necessary in order for another device to be used should an EFB device not be available for any reason. Still with EFBs, it’s all well and good having an device available but it needs to

be placed where the pilot can see it yet not risk the device falling and becoming a distraction or, worse, an encumbrance to safe operation. We have in this issue an excellent case study from Southwest Airlines and United Airlines which looks at the mounting of an EFB device in the cockpit in such a way that it meets all safety criteria and will be easily adaptable for a new device without the need for a major modification of the aircraft. Testing is another key contributor to safety as well as to ensuring that changes will operate smoothly. Our article on testing from Alaska Airlines details their work using test data and service virtualization projects when bringing new operational systems online. And the latest in our ‘Solutions in Practice’ series looks at how LOT Polish Airlines has improved most aspects of its operations by implementing an advanced Aircraft Performance Monitoring (APM) solution.

Honeywell Forge for Airlines is a single, integrated software solution combining a broad range of individual aircraft and overall airline data into one easy-to-use and individually customizable dashboard.

Lufthansa Network Airlines continue to benefit from SchedConnect codeshare management solution Lufthansa Systems announced in mid-August 2019 that the airlines of the Lufthansa Group will continue to use its SchedConnect codeshare management solution. SchedConnect helps airlines optimize the handling of codeshare flights, reduce costs and increase revenues. By signing the group agreement, the five airlines — Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Air Dolomiti and Edelweiss Air — will also enjoy standardized administration, which will reduce complexity and costs.

“Our innovative SchedConnect codeshare management solution was

already being used successfully by a few separate airlines in the Lufthansa Group. This joint agreement will now generate additional long-term synergies that will benefit all the airlines,” said Renata Widmann, Key Account Manager Lufthansa Group Airlines at Lufthansa Systems.

SchedConnect is currently the most technologically advanced system of its kind. It processes around 360 million schedule changes per year and identifies the potential effects on codeshare connections. The solution guarantees a high degree of automation in order to calculate the best codeshare

connections for the 35 customers and their partners. If a minimum connecting time is not met due to a schedule change or if a partner flight is canceled, SchedConnect assigns the marketing flight number to another suitable connecting flight operated by a partner.

CityJet has signed a new three-year contract with Evoke Systems for the market leading EFOS training management system, for its Pilots and Cabin Crew. The EFOS system will include integrations with Sabre for crew data and expiry dates, migration of data for historic training records, course management tracking of candidate and syllabus progress, and qualification expiry and role documentation tracking.

Singapore company LAMINAAR Aviation Infotech announced in mid-September 2019 that Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA), the world’s largest seaplane operator, has chosen ARMS® to manage its flight crew operations.

The LAMINAAR solution will be a blend of ARMS® Crew Management Sub System (CMSS), plus ARMS® on Mobile (AOM), and will be compatible with TMA’s existing mobility applications and assets. Twin Otter seaplanes, the world’s largest seaplane fleet, out of the seaplane terminal co-located at the Velana International Airport, Maldives. It is also the oldest air transfer operator in the archipelago, providing seaplane transfer services to a large number of tourist resorts. The airline is also one of the largest employers in the Maldives with around 1000 employees, including nearly 300 crew members.

Honeywell and SmartSky bring unparalleled connectivity to North American airlines using 5G technologies Honeywell announced in mid-June 2019 that it has been selected as an authorized value-added reseller for SmartSky Networks’ air-to-ground services leveraging 5G technologies for North American airline operators.

By becoming an authorized reseller, Honeywell extends its inflight connectivity (IFC) services for airlines.

The new air-to-ground connectivity from SmartSky provides Honeywell customers with another option for internet connectivity that delivers a user experience similar to that found at home. Honeywell is also a provider of Inmarsat’s GX Aviation via satellite, which is powered by Honeywell’s JetWave™ hardware. Additionally, Honeywell offers safety solutions that provide direct data link communications between pilots and air traffic controllers via L-band satellite networks.

In late September 2019, Singapore Airlines (SIA) became the world’s first airline to host a live TV news broadcast from on board a commercial A380 flight powered by SITAONAIR’s high-speed Internet ONAIR over GX Aviation. The broadcast by Sky Sports featured live interviews with the Alfa Romeo team travelling from Zurich to Singapore on board flight SQ346 for this year’s FORMULA 1 SINGAPORE AIRLINES SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX 2019. Fans on the ground were able to watch live as the team discussed what life is like in the sky, travelling to world-class racing destinations, while staying connected to their lives on the ground.

Avionica to Integrate GigSky’s eSIM into avCM Comm Module Avionica announced, in mid-September 2019, the integration of Avionica’s avCM Communications Module with GigSky’s Internet of Things (IoT) eSIM solution. avCM has been deployed as the global communications unit for Avionica’s Quick Access Recorders (QARs) and aviONS (Onboard Network Server) to move data on and off the aircraft. The eSIM solution will be available to Avionica’s airline and business jet customers beginning in December. eSIM does not use a SIM card, so Avionica customers adopting eSIM will eliminate required maintenance to replace SIM cards within its equipment.

The eSIM is universally configurable, ensuring that the aircraft will always be connected at competitive rates anywhere in the world. Using the GigSky toolset, Avionica actively monitors and manages connectivity

to ensure that data is always delivered when and where required.

“Avionica gains an immediate and important market advantage by equipping avCM with eSIM,” said Sean Reilly, vice president of Business Development for Avionica. “Partnering with GigSky allows us to embed eSIM chip technology into the current LTE Upgrade of the avCM. The eSIM-enabled avCM provides seamless access to current and future wireless communications networks globally and eliminates the removable plastic SIM card.”

AEROTEAM Training Solutions announced at the start of October 2019 that it will offer complete turn-key training solutions for basically all aspects of the aviation community. As both organizations have been offering training for their respective clients for many years, the new company is established on a solid foundation of experience and a huge portfolio of training courses, aimed at both the operational and technical side of the aviation business.

The cooperation started almost ten years ago, when Scandinavian Avionics hired Søren Agner who owns Aeroteam, to be the Training Manager in the Part-145 and Part-147 departments within Scandinavian Avionics.

Michael R. Aeroteam is also the company behind the MAYDAY Training Tools, which are a series of interactive learning games to help increase the learning experience. Scandinavian Avionics and Aeroteam just released a Human Factors version of the MAYDAY Training Tool, which already has received very good feedback.

Honeywell advanced software saving Nippon Cargo Airlines, Kuwait Airways up to 3% in fuel costs Honeywell is helping reduce fuel use on 33 aircraft for two carriers through its Honeywell Forge Flight Efficiency software. “Airlines today are trying to meet very tight margins while also improving operational efficiency, and Honeywell Forge Flight Efficiency helps on both fronts,” said John Peterson, vice president and general manager, Software and Services at Honeywell Connected Enterprise, Aerospace.

“We give operators information they can use to develop, implement, sustain and measure fuel-efficiency initiatives.”

Fuel use can account for 20% to 40% of an airline’s operating costs, so even single-digit percentage improvements can potentially save airlines tens of millions of dollars each year. Honeywell Forge Flight Efficiency allows airlines to take advantage of new ways to save fuel by impacting the three major influencers of fuel consumption: aircraft weight, engine utilization and fuel planning. The software collects, cleans and analyzes streams of disparate data from a wide variety of sources, and offers actionable insights and alerts that can help improve an airline’s efficiency across its fleet.

Nippon Cargo Airlines has implemented the software across its fleet of eight Boeing aircraft. Kuwait Airways has implemented the software across its fleet of 25 Boeing and Airbus aircraft.

Honeywell Forge Flight Efficiency is one component of Honeywell Forge for Airlines, which includes solutions for flight operations, flight efficiency and connected maintenance in a single user interface.

Azerbaijan Airlines adopts modern technologies to reduce its harmful emissions

In mid-September 2019, Azerbaijan Airlines signed a partnership with OpenAirlines to use its solution SkyBreathe. Given the high priority of the issue of reducing harmful emissions for AZAL, this agreement is of a strategic importance for Azerbaijan’s national air carrier.

SkyBreathe Fuel Efficiency is an innovative solution using Big Data Algorithms, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.

“To develop a fuel-conscious culture across operations team, we needed to have a better understanding of our fuel consumption, that’s why we selected SkyBreathe. The software with such great opportunities will be a great asset to help us monitor and improve fuel efficiency. Vietnam Airlines delivers country’s first inflight connectivity for passengers with SITAONAIR Vietnam Airlines is cementing its status as the country’s premier national carrier by becoming the first Vietnamese airline to offer inflight connectivity (IFC) — through a partnership with SITAONAIR and Inmarsat satellite telecommunications operator VISHIPEL. The collaboration, announced in early October 2019, will see the delivery of pioneering inflight internet services across its fleet, offering digitally-demanding passengers the onboard connectivity they want, and enabling them to stay connected with work and family.

Why skybook is the answer With all the emphasis on Electronic Flight Bags and flight tracking in recent years it’s become all too easy to overlook other areas where significant performance gains can be found throughout the flight operations, dispatch and crew briefing process. How does it work then?

Web Manuals partners with Arycom to boost connectivity in Americas In late October 2019, Web Manuals, the digital documentation solution for aviation, announced that it is partnering with satellite connectivity provider Arycom, to boost access to digital manuals in every location across the Americas.

Arycom has been providing satellite voice and broadband data solutions to the South American aviation industry from its Brazil headquarters since 2001. The company expanded into the US in 2017 and is now one of the leading providers of end-toend satellite connectivity solutions in the Americas.

Royal Brunei Airlines paperless with Conduce eTechLog8

Conduce and Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) were very proud to announce in late October 2019 that on the 18th September 2019 the Brunei Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) issued a ‘Letter of No Objection’ for Royal Brunei Airlines to use Conduce eTechLog8 on the RB B787 fleet.

The letter states “The Department of Civil Aviation hereby has no objection and grants an approval for the utilisation of Electronic Technical Log on Royal Brunei’s B787 fleet” On Wednesday 9th October the first RB B787 Dreamliner Registration V8-DLC operated Brunei to Melbourne Flight Number BI 005 without the paper technical log, Acting Senior Vice President Engineering Hj Badarudin Bagol stated “The implementation of Conduce eTechLog8 with Royal Brunei has gone extremely smoothly.

The first DCA approved trial flight occurred on 25th April 2019, which was just four months and 16 days from the project start date. Parallel run trials with the paper system were completed over the Summer resulting in RB receiving full approval by

September”. RB started the project back in December 2018 with a dedicated team to manage the project, which involved various stakeholders including the Brunei DCA. Badarudin also explained “This was a very interesting project with a challenging timeline. It was not an easy transition, especially after more than 40 years of RB operations using the paper system. In addition, this is only part of the whole digitization paperless operation project being carried out by RB engineering. We have however managed to overcome all hurdles and complete the project successfully.”

Conduce CEO Steve Russell noted that “It has been an exciting 2019 for the Conduce team, with Royal Brunei, Airbus Beluga and SmartLynx Malta all receiving respective “Letters of No Objection” to use eTechLog8 and so eliminating the paper Technical Logs.

Conduce are also expecting to gain FAA approval for a North American Florida based customer by the end of 2019.

SchedConnect 5.0: Lufthansa Systems unveils a brand new user interface of its codeshare management solution

Lufthansa Systems announced, in mid-September 2019, the launch of a new version of its codeshare management solution from its NetLine product line. SchedConnect Version 5.0 boasts a completely redesigned system interface and improved functionalities. The solution helps airlines optimize the management of codeshare flights, reduce costs and increase revenues; plus it’s based on a centrally hosted multi-tenant system,

enabling all SchedConnect customers to upgrade to the new version.

The fresh graphical user interface improves user-friendliness significantly with larger fonts and self-explanatory buttons, as well as ergonomic aspects such as menu structure and color design.

“We have already provided excellent software, but this new user-friendly design takes the system to a new level in terms of user experience,” said Michael Becker, Senior Product Manager

SchedConnect. “Our focus is to create software our users can rely on, not only from a functional perspective but also from an ergonomic point of view.”

In addition to the new interface, the release also includes several functional innovations and features. One of the most significant developments is the simplified handling of system processes aimed at informing the user about the status of running actions. Another new feature is an integrated interface that enables communication between client and server, paving the way for webbased applications. The new version also includes the new Minimum Connecting Time (MCT) standard introduced by IATA, which is scheduled for industry cutover on October 27. This enables Lufthansa Systems to support its SchedConnect customers with this complex and comprehensive standard change. Variable customizable views of selected data complete the new version.

Product developed in close collaboration with customers

Lufthansa Systems collected user feedback regarding the feeling and

working methods of the codeshare management solution via a commonly used community platform and conducted User Groups. “A lot of the wishes and requirements sent by our users were integrated into the new version of SchedConnect. The new interface in particular will open doors for new upcoming technologies,” said Thomas Kullmann, Head of SchedConnect at Lufthansa Systems SchedConnect has evolved into the most technologically advanced system of its kind since its launch over ten years ago. It processes around one million schedule changes per day and identifies the potential effects on codeshare connections. The solution ensures a high level of automation to calculate the optimal codeshare connections for over 30 customers and their partners. If a minimum connecting time is not met due to a schedule change, SchedConnect assigns the marketing flight number to another suitable flight.

Changes are sent through the reservation systems to travel agents and customers as well as to the operations and passenger-related systems of the airlines involved.

In early October 2019, Singapore company LAMINAAR Aviation Infotech Pte Ltd., announced that it has appointed Mr. Jahan Alamzad as President of LAMINAAR Americas, which was established in Denver, Colorado in July 2019. In this role, Jahan will be primarily responsible for the company’s business in the Americas. He will additionally be the acting Chief Operations Officer (COO) of the LAMINAAR Group, overseeing world-wide operations.

Jahan has been a managing principal of CA Advisors, a San Francisco-based management consulting firm that advises various industries, including aviation.

Previously, he held positions of Director — Strategy and Analytics at PricewaterhouseCoopers and Director — Airline, Aerospace and Operations Research at Applied Decision Analysis Inc., a company subsequently acquired by PricewaterhouseCoopers. Before becoming a management consultant, he gained valuable experience working with both American Airlines and United Airlines, two of the largest airlines in the world.

Jahan holds a Masters in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University, as well as, a Masters in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Southern California, and a Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Malaysia Airlines deploys Viasat’s Aerodocs to enhance its digital transformation and streamline compliance reporting Viasat Inc., a global communications company, announced in late October 2019 that its Aerodocs document management system has been deployed

by Malaysia Airlines to support the airline’s compliance and digital transformation objectives.

Aerodocs is an aviation-grade document management solution that is providing Malaysia Airlines with complete control over the editing, distribution and viewing of critical flight reference handbooks and airline documentation in a secure, controlled manner, with advanced workflow tracking to help maintain aviation regulatory compliance.

Malaysia Airlines recently won the “Best Airline in Asia” award at the Pacific Area Travel Writers Association (PATWA) International Travel Awards. The

A

lthough the theme of this article is testing and virtualization within the airline space, perhaps it will be useful to start by explaining a little about Alaska Airlines.

Components of a flight.

ALASKA AIRLINES

Contrary to popular belief, we cannot see Polar Bears outside of our office window but the airline’s name does reflect its origins and its pioneering spirit, albeit that our headquarters are in Seattle, Washington State. With the recent acquisition of Virgin America, Alaska has become the fifth largest US airline, transporting over 44 million guests a year. We maintain a young operational fleet of 166 Boeing 737 aircraft, 71 Airbus A320 family aircraft, 35 Bombardier Q400 aircraft, and 26 Embraer 175 aircraft. The fleet serves regional and main line operations in the group and connects with about 118 cities in the United States, Mexico, Canada and Costa Rica. There are more than 23,000 employees in the airline.

Readers will already be aware of the digital transformation that our industry is facing, and will most probably have already embarked upon that journey. As an eighty-seven year old airline, Alaska Airlines started before the computer age.

Much of our original processes were all analog using paper and pencil, as we moved towards the future and evolved, a lot of those processes became digitized. However, they were still pretty much one-to-one equivalents of the analog processes that they replaced. So, as we move forward while remaining competitive, we are focusing to an increasing degree on mobile and Cloud development as well as on business intelligence (BI) to help us provide more customer-led solutions and a better experience for our customers.

As an airline, Alaska interacts with many systems to offer our customers a quality product. Some have been internally developed and some have been bought from vendors with whom readers will be familiar (Sita – Aircomm; Smart4Aviation – SmartLoad, SmartComm, SmartSuite; eMRO – Trax; Jeppesen – Jeppesen Crew Tracking; Champ – CargoSpot; Sabre – PSS). We have aircraft, crew, cargo, baggage, fuel applications. However, when we brought all of these independent applications (figure 1) together to support our new Weight & Balance system, we started to face many challenges which we collectively call ‘Why testers can’t test’ (figure 2).

This complex system is really a collection of separate applications. The environment itself presents many new challenges. Most prominently, it is shared and subject to continual change. Our data may need to refresh from time to time or risk being inconsistent.

There are also dependent services which interact differently with the environment and might not have the right data; or there are events that do not exist.

We refer to this environment problem as ‘integrated, but not coordinated’.

OVERCOMING THE CHALLEGES AND PROBLEMS

These challenges were hard to overcome in the test environment. This is the core theme of our article; to share with readers how these problems were solved.

more specifically, that it’s shared. There were other teams producing and deploying new code so that, when there was a failure, it meant that we were using a lot of time for troubleshooting; was it our code?

Was it another team’s code? Although we were working together, it was taking time and some cycles to figure out the root cause for these failures.

Besides the frequent changes, the failures also exposed that there were missing dependencies. By

the time that we found out that the problem was with another but interdependent service, we discovered that those applications had missing dependencies, also known as dependency hell.

Though it seems insurmountable, eventually all dependencies were resolved.

The first part of our solution was to isolate our project from the other projects by creating our own environment and, using virtual machines; we had our own isolated deploy types to keep that environment separate so that there wouldn’t be cross-pollination between our environment and the other environments, our deploy type became known as certification (CERT).

Another very important piece of our solution was people; one of our leadership principals at that time was to develop an understanding of ‘the people, the process, the technology’. This involved bringing in a release manager to keep all the dependent code bases in sync and help maintain the complex catalog of all these applications.

Due to licensing cost, or other constraints some of these applications simply did not exist, or could not be deployed to our environment, we will cover that later when on the topic of service virtualization. This exercise of identifying all applications and their dependencies for our weight and balance system allowed us to create thorough architectural diagrams and application/service catalog for our CERT environment. Once we had finally ironed out the environmental challenges, the next challenge was, what were we going to do for data?

Data challenges and solutions

As readers will be aware, there are a lot of moving parts to an airline as highlighted above, so one of the challenges that we faced was that data is constantly moving but only useful up until the flight lands. After that, it becomes stale and no longer useful for testing, in addition the availability of data is also a challenge. Any given day will provide unanticipated cancellations, certain passenger loads given a specific route, live animals and/or dangerous goods in the cargo hold. Trying to test these scenarios on a regular basis would become impossible since they may not occur daily.

On top of that, I’m sure if any readers are suffering from technical debt, perhaps have a lot of legacy systems in place you’ll find that they have been developed over the years by several different developers with many different opinions, contractors, etc. There might also be some design problems along the way. Readers will be aware of GDPR and, in the

United States, California is implementing its own data privacy policy legislation, the California Consumer Privacy Act, which will take effect in 2020. The protection of personal data is one of Alaska Airlines key concerns.

Historically, we were using production data for testing. And, of course, when you are trying to do testing more regularly, you have to consider the cost of time loss from doing database refreshes continually.

In Alaska Airlines’, as in any airline, data came in the form of multiple relationship database platforms, flat file sources, and so on. Refreshing took a lot of time and cost every day. Plus, we also had to synchronize the data across multiple platforms to keep it in alignment with the cargo, baggage, passenger, and flight operations management systems.

Alaska Airlines leveraged the concept of Test Data Management(TDM), the process of bringing data under control, and achieved this through a combination of internally developed SQL scripts as AIRCRAFT IT Operations • WINTER 2019-2020 • 37

well as procuring a commercial off the shelf tool, IBM InfoSphere Optim Test Data Management and Data Privacy. We could solve protracted time loss from database refreshes by creating right size data sub-sets, instead of loading a years’ worth of data to live through one day, just extract one day’s worth of data. This single aspect accounted for a large part of our time savings from hours and days to just minutes. From that subset we could then obfuscate to mask the personally identifiable information (PII) such as flight crew, passenger names and respective birth dates.

The key to our solution was using global date aging across all the orchestrated databases. This allowed us to create a nightly process that cleaned up the previous day of data and dynamically aged it forward one day, so that it was fresh again for the next day: now we could live through the life-cycle of the flights that we had in our schedule. At this point in the process, data becomes database platform agnostic, so that it’s flexible and can be used across multiple

database platforms, which we will cover regarding our training environment in the overall benefits section.

There were some database design issues; cross database synchronization was a small challenge since primary keys and database constraints did not cross from one database to another. The products we were using, both tool-based and the ones internally developed, could derive data relationships across databases. This allowed us to extract a complete referentially intact sub-set out of multiple database systems. This extract contained the ‘sunny day’ scenarios. Now that we understood the data relationships we could generate synthetic data to capture irregular operations, edge cases, and other custom test scenarios into our overall test data management solution to provide complete end-to-end reliable repeatable data.

Service challenges and solutions

Alaska Airlines has a lot of partners who maintain their own internal test systems for us to connect to, but that data is under the vendors control. Though, we might have access to it, it takes a lot of time

spent submitting requests through the vendor to get our desired data loaded. It also requires a lot of time to set up and configure data across all the other applications to support a testing scenario. This data creation cycle might be one, two or more days before you get that full feedback loop to get the data in the state that you need. After you’ve spent the time to get all the data in place, you only get to use it once, or the data might be aged out and stale, so that you must start the cycle all over again.

Another element in our complex environment are data protocols, including multiple database platforms, different implementations, job apps… there’s a lot of complexity to these different services. And then there’s the fact that some things can be expensive to use such as ‘hit count’ costs, which will bring up the cost of your testing and integration of applications.

We could overcome these service problems by using a service virtualization. Service virtualization allows the user to build out application dependencies that abstract from what the real service is so that you don’t have to consider the real service with all its downline dependencies. remove those constraints from the environment architecture. Alaska Airlines selected Parasoft Virtualize as their service virtualization tool due to its impressive speed for which systems can be virtualized, rich support of protocols, and ease of use.

For Alaska Airlines, we could virtualize some of these ‘difficult to coordinate’ services. The biggest service that we virtualized was the passenger counts web service. The data for this service is stored in our Sabre partition. The raw passenger data is accessed via two internally developed services, one that gets the raw data from Sabre, and another that aggregates the values from the prior service. What does the life cycle of a passenger look like? We know, that passengers, shop, book, check-in, and board. We were running a thousand flights and every flight has a hundred or more passengers, which would be 400K to 500K events to automate per day. If we were to automate these per passenger state changes, it would be comparable to simulating production traffic levels in the test environment. But we didn’t have production level server resources in our non-production environment, nor did we have the raw data from Sabre. Though, we did have access to the production aggregated data. Using service virtualization, and data analysis, we created time based ratios to simulate what the passenger counts service would look like as the passengers booked, checked-in, and finally boarded. Since we solved this by pairing up data analysis and service virtualization, users could update the values in the database, and refresh the UI thus closing the feedback loop for passenger data requests. The final solution virtualized a SOAP XML HTTP synchronous using a MS-SQL backend simulating passenger lists from Sabre, all without touching Sabre.

Even though passenger counts simulation was more involved, there were simpler solutions as well.

One challenge was that the weight and balance system required load closeout acknowledgments to complete a weight and balance for an aircraft, but we lacked an isolated Aircomm instance, actual pilots,

actual aircraft with ACARS units and satellite communication (SATCOM) to perform these tasks within the test environment. Using service virtualization, we created a logic that would accept a Load Close-out message and would respond with an acknowledgement message with the correct acknowledgment ID to maintain referential integrity across multiple systems. This simple flow allowed users to complete their test scenarios of the weight and balance system. The final solution used XML and fixed width messages over Message Queues (MQ).

Event challenges and solutions

One of the last major challenges we faced was events, much like a real production environment, having the aircraft on the ground is not very useful.

We needed to figure out a way to simulate the life-cycle of a day of our aircraft operation at Alaska Airlines. For instance, we needed to figure out, from a passenger perspective, how to book passengers, how to check-in, how to board… which we previously handled using service virtualization. In addition to passenger events, we needed to accommodate aircraft events to simulate the aircraft movement: we needed to know when the aircraft was out from the gate, when it took off, when it had landed and when it got back in to the gate; also known as the out, off, on, in events (OOOI). To add to the complexity, the weight and balance system had timeline rules for business processes that we needed to allow for. In addition to these aircraft events, there were other manual processes that would require the input of a subject matter expert. Given the resource constraints that we faced, we had to figure out a way to automate the processes that people were doing manually.

To solve our event problems, we did an event analysis of all events for one flight for one day, and when they referentially occurred compared to time of departure and landing, this became our referential event model. Besides OOOI events we added

estimated time of departure (ETD) and estimated time of arrival (ETA). We also captured more complex events such as aircraft ACARS initialization, pilot check-in, pilot FAR 117 fit for duty (F4D), ACARS notifications, generate flight plan, dispatch release, post departure close out, delays and cancellations, to name a few. We then applied our event model against our flight schedule to create a realistic set of events we could replay day after day.

The most creative aspect of this event model is that we could add customizations for business rules and test cases. We could time shift events for our international market so that they happened earlier to follow international business rules. We could time shift events to a later time, disable them, or duplicate them to test the time-based rules of the weight and balance system.

to do was develop some custom automation to perform these tasks. Initially we used an off-the-shelf product Parasoft SOAtest, but now we have evolved to a home-grown solution using Microsoft .Net Core 3.0. This eventing engine uses MS-SQL as a core data source, and executes web service events using SOAP XML over HTTP and REST JSON over HTTP. The eventing engine also executes SQL events via table updates and stored procedure executions to their respective databases using Microsoft SQL (MS-SQL) and IBM Informix. The engine also sends XML and fixed width messages via (MQ). With this eventing solution in place we now have a very realistic, accurate and repeatable life-cycle of events for all flights for a given day, every day.

OVERALL BENEFITS

We have several teams working on our weight and balance system; manual test, automated test, performance test, configuration, and training teams.

All of them have differing data needs and thus each has their own isolated environment. Alaska has created distinct solution for each environment to support the needs of each team. Our motto is, “The right data at the right time in the right place.”

And we’ve reduced the risk of the costs of a data breach. One of the challenges we face as we continue to provide more exposure to the data across on-site and off-shore contractors. We also wanted to ensure that we would mitigate the risks for any exposure to actual sensitive data.

One of our other solutions is stand-alone integrated rapid refresh training environment. The data is right sized, we’re not pulling in an entire year’s worth of data and then aging it; we are dynamically generating a desired training scenario, that departs every 30 minutes using a Standard Schedules Information Manual (SSIM) file. The SSIM file format is described by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for exchanging flight schedules between airlines and airline systems. We then ingest the data generated SSIM into our environment using the integrated SSIM pipeline using existing business processes to create the desired data in the relevant systems. Using this process, the training environment can be torn down and built up in ninety seconds. In addition, there is a virtual service that is under the trainers’ control that allows them to modify Minimum Equipment List (MEL) items for an entire fleet in seconds, so that they can provide a rich dynamic training to our operational staff.

It has been a significant improvement over our old processes where we were doing complete data refreshes that might take days, test data management has allowed us to expedite these data processes. The greatest benefits have come from purely synthetic data, which allows us to shed the constraints of production data, and instead design data using a, ‘you dream it, and we can build it’ approach.

One unintended consequence of doing the testing was that, after we customized all the test team’s scenarios into each database in the environment, it provided us with a rich data set to provide realistic training environments. We could then abstract all the dependencies that we had in our CERT environment except for MQ. We could eliminate the need for database servers, database management systems as well; and we were able to eliminate the need for application servers, web servers and, most importantly, we were able to eliminate the system’s dependency on our enterprise service bus for integration. We achieved this by setting up a MQ

Our MQ proxy recorder captured time stamp, MQ, and message body of each message. Then we performed date time transforms on the xml messages and replayed them directly into the training environment.

This was great for environmental cost savings, however, the training team had greater desires for data than the other teams we had previously worked with. The training team wanted to train 10 students at a time against all scenarios, continually across multiple time slots a day. This was a multi-dimensional challenge, that brought parallel scenarios across time into perspective. We solved the scenario challenges by extracting the desired scenario for each aircraft type from the proxy recorder database. We solved the parallelism challenge of having enough aircraft for 10 students by cloning of real aircraft to synthesized aircraft. This allowed each student to have their own virtual aircraft for all their training scenarios.

Most domestic flights scenarios captured in our base recording are 3-5 hours, instead of having the student wait hours until their next training opportunity, we had to figure out a way to give more training opportunities to the students. We could solve this a couple different ways, we could create more virtual aircraft, or we could compress the duration of the flight scenarios. Since we are fighting constraints from so many perspectives we decided to solve it by compressing the time of the scenarios. Some flight durations were reduced to 15 minutes, and some down to 1 hour depending upon the duration of the training scenario.

The weight and balance training environment became a very remarkable and unanticipated benefit of the overall solution. A total surprise to us was that we found out that over 6,500 front-line employees

have been trained on weight and balance procedures in this environment.

As new projects came about with new data needs, we had to come up with a new approach of data blending. Data blending allowed us to blend what we call engineered data that is under TDM control with actual naturally occurring data from live systems. It works by detecting what type of data it is, and then generates appropriate events for that specific system and level of integration. Additionally, our blending strategy allowed us to dynamically route data between virtual and real services. This allowed Alaska Airlines to support multiple teams co-existing within the same environment to support the same project.

This environment was a critical to the success of the integration of Alaska Airlines and Virgin America passenger service systems (PSS). We are continuing to develop this further to expand support for future cross team testing efforts.

One last point: much like the digital transformation of our industry, it has been a journey and a journey that is not yet complete, we would like to extend the offer to share our journey with readers. We’ve tried to compress five years’ experience into a few thousand words and that has meant that, of necessity, this has had to be a high-level overview but there will be readers who are not as far along the journey as Alaska and readers who are further ahead than us: we’d love to share ideas with both groups, especially in the topic of exotic testing scenarios. These techniques can be used if you’re an airline undertaking integrations or if you’re a vendor building solutions.

We hope this brief overview of our experience will prove useful to readers who are also treading the same digital path that we and many others are treading.

FAA EFB Policy update

I

t is always a pleasure to share with Aircraft IT readers updates to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) EFB policy and things are a little bit different this time, reflecting the growing maturity of EFB usage. While I have continually focused on the future of FAA EFB policy, the conversation today is about utilizing existing policy to create and utilize new and novel concepts, which have been briefed and accepted by FAA’s leadership.

The topics that I will cover in this article will include: • Alternative EFB Device Usage • Automated EFB Concept • Display of Own-Ship Position (No Glass) • New EFB Applications We will focus on the first two inasmuch as the first is about industry stakeholders coming to the FAA and asking for help when EFB devices, for whatever reason, are unavailable for use. The second has to do with the paper I wrote in September of 2018, which has sparked some conversations, in a good way, about what could possibly be done with EFBs utilizing existing technologies. The last two points discuss issues on what I consider an equivalent level of safety to paper: that has been a foundational argument for why we are able to display this information on a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) electronic device versus the traditional paper.

ALTERNATIVE EFB DEVICE USAGE

So, first off, what happens when an EFB becomes unavailable? Let us start with the rules; with 14 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) and its various parts.

The rules do not say you need more than one device and they do not mention the word ‘paper’. The FAA’s General Council has ruled that, if something is going to be shown in a digital form, it must satisfy the requirements that are set out in 14 CFR. The FAA’s general risk mitigation strategy is to have more than one operational EFB in the unlikely case one of the EFBs becomes unavailable. However, there is nothing in 14 CFR preventing pilots in the cockpit from sharing information utilizing one EFB. And this

“…there is a dramatic difference between flight attendant use of EFBs for the flight attendant manuals and flight deck crews (the pilots) use; having to do primarily with the physical proximity…” scenario does occasionally happen – maybe the software fails (unlikely) or the battery wasn’t charged and perhaps the charging point is not available (still unlikely), or they forgot their device, etc.

As an aviation safety inspector, from my perspective it does not make sense to print out a bunch of paper at an outstation, throw it in a garbage bag and then say, ‘Okay, we’ve satisfied the rules’.

What we want is for pilots to be able to use a device in a similar fashion with those habitual patterns in the cockpit that lead to safety; to be able to use that same device over and again like they normally do. The FAA does not outline any individual strategy for what to do when one EFB is inoperative in the cockpit. In addition, there is a dramatic difference between flight attendant use of EFBs for the flight attendant manuals and flight deck crews (the pilots) use; having to do primarily with the physical proximity the crewmembers may or may not be in with respect to each other. In the flight deck, there is always one pilot flying the airplane and one pilot monitoring. The pilot monitoring is primarily responsible for using the EFB to read the checklists, review dispatch paperwork, etc.

Although our policy did not originally reflect the idea of temporarily utilizing a personal device, in today’s age, everyone has his or her own device. And we think it’s safer for a pilot to temporarily use their own device as long as they can satisfy to their Principle Operating Inspector (POI) that the information being obtained from that device is up to date, that it’s legible and secure. However, because this would not be the primary EFB device, the FAA would have to look at the evaluation and considerations for use slightly differently from primary AIRCRAFT IT Operations • WINTER 2019-2020 • 43

EFB devices. For example, would rapid decompression testing offer any risk mitigation? I would suggest not since the primary EFB device was already tested, and available for use in the unlikely event of a rapid decompression event. However, 14 CFR requires EMI testing, and so those considerations in our policy would still need to be considered.

The goal is to not prescribe a specific way in which an operator can show that certain devices can be used temporarily in place of their primary EFB; we’re simply saying that we’re open to the idea of having the operator come to the FAA and present to us basic considerations that they would have for their crew members to temporarily utilize their own device to acquire the same information that they were trying to display before on their primary EFB device. Again, separate from the flight attendants because their roles, their responsibilities, their physical proximity to one another or not, are different.

In terms of what is going to go into the FAA’s policy, the rule doesn’t stop an operator today proposing a new idea as I just described above where they say, ‘OK, if it’s this type of device and it’s this size, with this amount of battery power and can automatically connect to the mobile device management company, etc.;’ that’s allowed today.

There is information in INFO 13002 which might get updated in the future but it’s an INFO, not a regulation, so it doesn’t prevent an operator from suggesting these types of changes to their POI. I can say that we’ve already talked to a number of POI’s in the field about this idea and they’re completely open to it, knowing also that this particular INFO exists.

We’re focused now on the rules more than anything and, if existing policy supports that, great,

and even if it doesn’t, lets still focus on the rules. If the rules don’t say it’s prohibited, then work with us at the FAA and we’ll try to make this happen.

AUTOMATED EFB CONCEPT

From my perspective, using an EFB in the Air Force Reserves, and also performing enroute inspections on all the carriers, I’m generally familiar with how pilots are using the EFB in the cockpit, and what their capabilities are with and without datalink.

In my opinion, operators are still not fully utilizing this very capable device. We are still focused on offering information in a two-dimensional style traditional to paper. Meanwhile, these devices have the capabilities to offer pilots information in a completely different manner, and one in which pilots

can access information easier with the ability to digest the information with greater efficiency. With a piece of paper, you were limited as to how much information you had to present to the pilot. You’re also responsible for giving them all the information that they could possibly want and cramming that into a space that takes up the least amount of room. Potentially, that can all change if we think outside the way information was once presented in paper form.

EFBs can be stand alone or connected to the avionics via a data bus; they can also be connected to the ground via the Wi-Fi which opens up a whole host of information that could be ingested to the EFB. Really, the EFB knows where it is, knows the condition of the aircraft, the fuel on board; it knows the weather ahead: it can constantly think about, AIRCRAFT IT Operations • WINTER 2019-2020 • 44

what’s happening now, what’s going to happen in the future, what are the changes happening on the ground, it can think about things like ground delays… all information that would not normally have been provided to a pilot because that would have led to information overload. But there is something else the EFB can do and that is to ingest all that information and then, using machine learning, part of AI, it can concentrate on presenting the right information at the right time to the pilot.

That’s the cornerstone of this idea; that you want to be able to provide the right information at the right time and, at the same time, if the pilot wants other information that’s not being automatically provided, it can be easily obtained. This idea that we’re using PDF viewers to get information is wrong. We all interact with our own personal devices and the devices in our cars and our homes completely differently than we do in an aircraft. I believe that the use of EFB technology is getting better but it should be much easier to acquire specific information in the air. We should be able to ask our EFB, ‘what are my alternates right now, within a hundred miles?’ And it should show the Ops Spec, your authorized destinations, but also offer suggestions such as that the runways might be closed on one airport, that another airport has good weather conditions, here’s the applicable NOTAMS for this airport, etc. the sky is the limit.

However, it’s not as if this isn’t happening today.

There’s a major chart manufacturer where, when you cross, for instance, the North Atlantic, there are certain steps that have to be made going from the East Coast of the United States over to Europe and one of them is logging on to CPDLC (Controller-Pilot Data Link Communication); another is obtaining Oceanic clearance: these are things that pilots must always do.

But this App is smart enough to say, ‘I know what your flight plan is; I know where you are right now; so I’m just going to turn on the device with a notification to remind you that it’s time for you to log-in to CPDLC.’ It will even offer some frequencies that the pilot might want; VHF, HF. That means that the pilot doesn’t have

to look up that information and doesn’t have to bother ATC. That is providing the right information at the right time and automatically.

Think of this from pre-flight all the way through block-in. The moment a pilot steps on board an aircraft it should automatically recognize that pilot, know what the flight plan is and know what the pilot wants; so, why not offer the pilot information as they go through their flows in the cockpit? The device should have digital ATIS (Automatic Terminal Information Service) already up; it should already have a copy of the aircraft’s clearance for the flight… and all that is stand-alone. In the future, it could be one of those things where you’re looking at the information and you push to load automatically from the EFB to the FMS (Flight Management System). It’s the same with frequencies for example, when flying, why can’t a pilot touch a frequency on the EFB and have that pre-loaded into the standby side of the Comms box?

The sky is the limit; these ideas are completely within reach of the current policy. The FAA is basically asking the industry, ‘you have this very capable device, we understand that implementation costs money but we (the FAA) see it as a major improvement to safety when done right: and what we’ve seen so far is already a major improvement to safety. So we’re asking for more from operators, from manufacturers… we want people to think outside of the box.’ You are not limited as to how you present information to pilots; it doesn’t have to be a standard document in the way we see it today. The way that pilots brief for an approach was limited to this 2D plan and profile view on an approach

chart but is that the best way to provide information to a pilot? I would argue no, it’s not. Notwithstanding any of that, the leadership from the top down in the FAA is open to these ideas and we would be very interested to work with industry, the airlines and the operators, if you have such ideas already.

OWN SHIP POSITION

There has been a bit of a shift in the way that we’ve discussed the capabilities of ‘own ship position’ and what can and cannot be done based on whether there is a glass cockpit. When we worked on this whole idea of ‘own ship’, the basic premise was, based on aircraft certification policy, if you have redundancy, then you can downgrade the failure condition of a function. With that being said, we used the argument of concurrence and differentiation when it came to display of own ship as an EFB function. So, as long as the pilot had a Nav display with ‘own ship’ on it, there would be an easy way to detect erroneous information if it were displayed on the EFB because undetected erroneous information was the failure condition that we were worried about. The mitigation is that the pilot can easily cross-reference his Nav display against an EFB and trust the certified (Nav display) versus the uncertified (EFB) equipment. We’ve also always said for operators who are still non-glass, it’s still possible but that was misleading because the way that this policy has been set means that you can’t satisfy any of the basic requirements we’ve created unless there is concurrence.

with glass cockpits but the FAA has to come clean to say that there really is not an alternative strategy right now. So, with glass, you can get ‘own ship’ but without glass, you can’t get it.

NEW EFB APPLICATIONS

Finally, the FAA does have a process for new EFB applications and was working on the fifth one at the time of writing.

If you bring the FAA a new application, you’ll be looking at about four months from the time that the application is submitted to the time when the FAA will approve and give you a letter that can be used as justification to your POI that the subject of the application can be considered for use with your EFB; and, at some point, that will get incorporated into the Advisory Circular.

efore we delve too far into how two major airlines have adopted and integrated the mounting system for their EFB devices, we thought it would be a good idea to familiarize readers with the object at the heart of this case study, the PIVOT mounting solution.

MOUNTING EFB DEVICES SAFELY, SECURELY AND ACCESSIBLY

PIVOT started in 2013, at about the time when Apple was rapidly gaining market share in aviation and iPad usage was passing that of other tablets. As airline pilots themselves, the people at PIVOT recognized the need to streamline the way in which air crew and companies managed their EFB experiences. The goal was to develop a universal mounting method that could secure and protect a device while ensuring it could be utilized time and time again. Without this solution, bulky suction cups and cradles or expensive installed options would remain as the only mounting solution on the market.

The challenge was placing a tablet device in the aircraft in such a way that it increased the capability of the crew without serving as a distraction. Also, from a business perspective, how could the mount device be integrated into the enterprise and business side of the organization? Part of that could be achieved with standardization across many different aircraft types, but also standardization of ways to mount EFBs as every aircraft is slightly different and each has its own set of requirements.

What began as a suction cup mount has transitioned over the years to include other options for mounting. Most importantly, PIVOT developed the Long-Term Removable Mount (LTRM™) which has permanently changed the industry. The LTRM™ is a patent-pending solution which is custom fit to each aircraft type. With virtually instant installation and indefinite lifespan, airlines opt for this solution as it provides STC mount performance at a fraction of the hardware or labor cost. For those users desiring installed mounts, PIVOT has many options with STC providers under license. The flexibility to choose the level of mounting (suction, LTRM™ or installed STC) is a big part of the PIVOT solutions gains in the market.

Starting in 2014, Southwest Airlines was the first customer for PIVOT’s revolutionized mount. Shortly thereafter, United Airlines began using the PIVOT solution along with FedEx, WestJet and Jazz Airlines. Currently, over 140 airlines worldwide have adopted the PIVOT mount solution for EFB device installations, including Air Canada, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, ANA, Virgin Atlantic and Qantas.

This worldwide deployment has allowed the PIVOT team to interact with a wide spectrum of regulatory authorities, to understand the different ways in which airlines operate, to better understand pilot preferences and, from that, to refine a mounting solution that increases the capability of whatever tablet the airline

chooses to use. Now, the mounting concept is being adopted in other non-cockpit settings with cabin mounting projects, flight line, as well as maintenance.

Today, there are more than 140,000 daily EFB users who have accumulated more than 120 million block hours across all types of mounts and device types.

This broad user group has made it possible to recognize trends regarding how the devices need to be mounted as well as differences between North Figure 2: The original PIVOT iPad Air 1 case was designed in 2013 American users and European users. EASA and the specifically for aviation use.

FAA share similarities in their approaches and attitudes but there are also some differences. Fortunately for PIVOT, their mounts have all been regularly seen and accepted by both entities. Now, with adoption of the mounts growing fast in Asian markets, these regulators have become very familiar with the differences between suction cup mounts, LTRMs and STCs and how they integrate to into the pilot’s workflow.

THE EXPERIENCE AT UNITED AIRLINES

Joe Nanini, a First Officer with United Airlines, joined the airline’s EFB team in 2017 at a time when the airline was undertaking an EFB refresh to the iPad Pro 10.5. United had introduced the pilot issued iPad in 2011, starting with the fourth Generation iPad. United’s devices are cellular enabled with a PIVOT case for more than 775 aircraft in the United fleet. There are 12,700 pilots in United with new hiring running at about 40 every two weeks. For this group, the airline has some 13,500 iPads including spares and loaners. This is all controlled under Flight Operations and the EFB team focuses on the EFB — they don’t control the in-flight tool.

At United, the more than 775 aircraft in the fleet represent six different aircraft types with several sub-fleets below that. In any given week, United has approximately 25 to 30 pilots who change fleet, so the airline wanted a costefficient way to protect and mount the iPad which PIVOT can provide.

United uses just one make and model of EFB, currently the iPad Pro 10.5 and previously the iPad Air 2, but with Apple’s regular changes of technology, supplies of any given model begin to dwindle. United runs about a three-year cycle which has meant they must continually plan ahead for the next device. While Apple guarantees battery life cycles for about a thousand recharges, a pilot who charges their iPad every day should achieve the three-year lifespan for the EFB. A critical feature of the PIVOT cases is that each successive EFB device which is adopted, no matter the form factor, will be able to connect to the aircraft mounts without any change to the mount device. This allows a large airline like United to save money and labor by seamlessly ‘rolling-in’ a new device.

THE EXPERIENCE AT SOUTHWEST AIRLINES

Southwest has a single type fleet of 750 Boeing 737s. The airline has 10,000 pilots and 11 crew bases, each of which holds five spare devices and five loaner devices. Six years ago, Southwest chose the PIVOT suction cup mount. The ability to use a simple but effective mount initially allowed them to focus on the EFB program and to take their time evaluating the wide variety of installed mounts on the market. Once again, it mattered that regardless of what device

was used, there would never be a need to change the mount. Many Southwest aircraft still used the suction cup mount at the time of writing. The airline was switching to the STC mount but it’s a slow process — some of the airline’s suction cup mounts have been in place for five years. Southwest has refreshed their EFB’s once during this period and report it was a smooth transition. When they first started the EFB program in 2013, other airlines warned them to expect a 4-10% annual break rate of their iPads. However, using the PIVOT case, breakages have been under one percent annually and under a half percent for the entire period.

In the first quarter of 2020, Southwest will be undertaking a refresh to the third iPad type used which will be fitted with a PIVOT case. Plus, the almost 20,000 flight attendants in the airline’s cabin crews also have a PIVOT case on their devices and their credit card reader is custom fit to go over the PIVOT case. Southwest’s EFB team includes three people with two project pilots. The team is one hundred percent responsible for pilots but also assists with the cabin crew devices, plus maintenance. Anyone at Southwest who’s implementing an iPad project goes to the EFB team for help.

STC MOUNTS

As we’ve already noted, both United and Southwest are moving towards an STC mount for the future but not all aircraft are suited to that type of mount. For Southwest, everything will go to an STC mount eventually. The change-over process is slow, but the suction cups are holding up extremely well with hardly any releases and the FAA has been pleased with the use of the mount in the airline’s aircraft.

Similarly, at United, the change to STC mounts is slow. All Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft have STC fixed mounting solutions with the PIVOT attachment and the airline is working with the Boeing 737 fleet as well as the other Boeing types in service. Like Southwest, United continues to use suction cup mounts as they have found them to be very reliable. However, United will be testing an LTRM solution on other fleets as they decide which path to choose. For Southwest, the PIVOT version of the ASG mount has been tremendously effective and popular with the pilot group.

PIVOT has worked with STC partners like Airbus, navAero, ASG and others to develop the ultimate solution once an airline is ready to invest in a permanent installation for their fleet. However, the suction cup mount allows an airline to start to establish standardization and build into a phased approach — if an STC is the goal years into the future, there has already been a start. And, in many instances, the suction or LTRM™ is preferred for aircraft under lease as there are no costs associated with demodification at the end of the term.

REGULATORS AND EFB MOUNTING

Although the two airlines represented here are very different, both share information and can help each other. Users have noticed that iPads that have been fitted with PIVOT mounts enable the airline to get the best possible price when the devices are refurbished and sold as the PIVOT cases do an excellent job of preserving the original finish of the iPad and many times come out looking like new after three years.

An issue that often arises in Europe and in Asia is the durability of the suction cup solution and how to reassure regulators that it will not impact flight controls and will be placed properly.

When Southwest did their initial test, there were 750 pilots who used their own iPad and each of those testers was issued with a suction cup mount. During the testing phase, they were asked to report on the pros and cons of the solution. There were no unintended releases reported in the six-month test phase. Over the airline’s first three years, there were only a few unintentional releases which are a testament to the quality of the PIVOT mount.

STC, now there is no hurry to decide. The important part is to future-proof the operation against device changes. If Apple comes up with an entirely new device or the airline selects a different device at some point in the future, PIVOT allows users to deal efficiently with the regulators on a known solution which they have worked with in the past.

One major facet of any EFB program is choosing the device the airline wants — iPad, Surface or other tablet. This is a huge capital investmentand a big decision.

Since PIVOT makes protective cases for all the main EFB devices, airlines can pick the best solution for their operation, not just what fits their cradle.

The next concern is what goes in the EFB. For Southwest, the EFB apps are third-party vendor apps. However, the airline realized that it had to become current with the latest in mobile technology. Also the airline didn’t have an efficient way for crews to check in for their flights outside of the airport — the airline’s flight attendants had to line up to use a phone at the airport to check in.

Southwest collaborated with a company called LexTech and built what started out as a check-in app on which all the pilots and flight attendants could see their trip and check in for it. Since then, it has progressed to enable them to view their schedule, check in for trips if they have a dead head in the trip, pull up the boarding pass and use it to pre-board on the aircraft, view their sick bank and more. Right now, the app is on the EFB — the next step has been to deploy the app to a personal phone. The biggest issue is that Southwest’s technology department wanted every pilot and flight attendant to enroll their personal phone into the airline’s device management software, Airwatch. The team did not feel comfortable with that, so the tech department is working on another option.

Many of United’s EFB applications are third-party. For flight planning and scheduling, the airline is using a desk-top program called CCS but has moved to an internal in-house application called Pilot Mobile. Pilot Mobile pulls feeds from different areas in CCS so that crew can sign up as fit for duty, complete flight plan release pulls, see who the crew is on a flight and more. However, it’s really just the presentation of information. That’s also what United uses for compliance and reading of documents such as Operations Bulletins and Pilot Bulletins. As far as other EFB applications are concerned, as with Southwest, United’s applications are all third-party, some of which the airline is working to integrate into a one-stopshop solution. The EFB route being followed by all airlines today will provide customer specific feeds from the various vendors tailored to what the airline wants them to look like. A perk here is that, if an airline does change a vendor, to the end user it makes no difference because the front view always looks the same regardless of what changes on the back-end.

United Airlines, Inc. is a major American airline headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. and operating a large domestic and international route network. Regional service is operated by independent carriers under the brand name United Express. As of March 2019, United Airlines operated a fleet of 778 aircraft; all Boeing and Airbus.

About LOT Polish Airlines fleet

Before we consider the value that was realized from implementing an advanced aircraft performance monitoring solution to keep track of performance in LOT Polish Airlines’ fleet, I’ll first tell readers about that fleet.

There are 90 aircraft in the LOT fleet with 11 different airframe/engine combinations from three aircraft manufacturers. Both jets and turboprops are operated. In terms of age it is one of the youngest fleets in Europe.

Aircraft Performance Monitoring (APM) The term Aircraft Performance Monitoring (APM) refers to a number of processes. It includes in-flight recording of parameters related to aircraft performance and comparison of recorded data with results obtained from performance databases provided by the aircraft manufacturer (base or ‘book’ performance). APM also involves tracking, over time, changes in these comparisons and using that information to more accurately plan required fuel quantities and to assess the technical condition of the aircraft.

Benefits of using the APM system

APM supports the accurate determination of degradation factors that affect the aircraft relative to baseline performance. It also allows the realization of planned fuel quantities calculated by the flight planning system and the on-board computer (FMC).

Using APM helps with tracking trends in aircraft wear and tear, the identification of better and worse aircraft in a given fleet and appropriate matching of aircraft to the routes to be served. It helps with categorizing tails to be maintained, supports a reduction in regulatory fuel reserves and increases crew confidence in the flight plan, thereby reducing fuel top-ups and/or contingency fuel uploads.

APM at LOT before Storkjet AdvancedAPM

With the number of manufacturers, types and models of aircraft in the fleet, the processes involved in the operation of the APM system at LOT Polish Airlines used to be very complex and resource hungry. Data feed was coming from a variety of sources like ACARS / QAR / FDR and, in some cases, supported with OCC data, LDS, EHM and AOM because of aircraft avionics limitations.

APM software was from aircraft manufacturers , supported with in house developed solutions. In each case data pre-processing was required to meet APM software input requirements.

Issues and inconveniences

There were a number of issues and inconveniences from APM related processes. Data transmission was via ACARS and that generated costs plus, in some cases, APM Software is subject to a fee. Also, DSIRF extraction from FDR is not an obvious process, additional effort is required. Another challenge was diversity in the IT technology used. If we introduced a second-hand aircraft to the fleet, it might require ACMS / DFDAU reconfiguration, and there was a cost involved with that. Aircraft avionics software is not free from errors and that may prevent the automatic collection of data plus there was a high labor and time demand where the in-house solution was in use.

Finding a new APM solution

Being aware of the imperfections of the existing solution, we have been monitoring the aircraft IT market, looking for replacement that would allow LOT to move the center of gravity from data collection to data analysis. Surprisingly the offering was rather poor and available solutions appeared to be more or less what we already had in house… and that’s when the StorkJet flyer came into our hands.

Implementation

From the perspective of LOT, this was a major change consisting in transition from ACMS based APM to FDR based aAPM (advancedAPM). The airline had to provide source data of proper quality and all the rest of the implementation was done by Storkjet.

Historical and current data: • QAR • Flight history • Engine history • Loadsheet One of the objectives of the project was to have an aircraft performance history in the system at least one year back from the start date. This required the

preparation of a huge amount of data, including historical data. On this occasion such imperfections in the data as lack of data, their discontinuity or inconsistency manifested themselves.

Data transfer process setup: • Internal interfaces • Data structure • Data security • Data delivery timelines • End to end processing automation The source data is processed internally for various other systems before being sent to advancedAPM. The challenge has been to ensure that the right data is in the right place at the right time. This was the most difficult part of the project.

The above process had to be done for each of 11 different airframe/engine combinations and in some cases it had to be repeated due to source data problems. It was the largest part of the project.

Acceptance environment and testing: • User interface adjustments • Customization • Acceptance test • Output validation Storkjet made the acceptance environment available already during the project, so it was possible to see how new planes and new data appeared in real time.

At the same time, we had the opportunity to comment on the user interface and submit proposals

for changes. The environment is fully customizable.

Training: • Solution familiarization • Documentation Anyone who has previously dealt with APM can easily learn this new environment and appreciate the ease of use. Therefore, no extensive documentation is required.

User support and maintenance process: • New features • New airplanes New planes are added automatically as soon as the source data for them is available. At the same time, it is still possible to raise system improvements, which are implemented in new releases of the working environment.

Major challenges: • High complexity of the project due to the diversity of the fleet; • The need to create performance models for 11 airframe / engine with very different characteristics; • The main problems in the project concerned source data quality, which significantly prolonged the estimated effort; • Timely implementation due to underestimation of the project complexity.

Storkjet AdvancedAPM

AdvancedAPM consists of two modules: • Performance monitoring module • Fleet, Aircraft & Engine analysis The performance monitoring module allows for precise and fully automatic

monitoring of aircraft performance.

The result is a set of deviations, from its performance model, calculated for each aircraft.

• SR deviation of the specific range (also referred to as FM Fuel Milage).

• FN deviation of thrust/resistance (deterioration of airframe aerodynamics).

• FF deviation of fuel consumption for a given power setting (engine efficiency).

A big advantage is the ability to eliminate the cost of data transmission by ACARS by using the existing data collection process for the needs of FDM or direct reading of parameters from files recorded on QAR/DAR. The last option bypasses the limitations of the standard performance monitoring process, such as a significantly limited number of stable sections or the calculation of performance for the cruise phase only. Thanks to this, the precision of the above mentioned indicators is much higher than with the use of standard methods.

The process is fully automated, allowing the performance team to concentrate on analyzing the results and implementing the resulting initiatives, rather than processing the data.

Fleet, Aircraft & Engine analysis This helps to detect performance degradation problems, such as unstimulated ailerons, rudder, protruding spoilers, thrust asymmetry, and their causes. Usually these problems are difficult to detect during standard maintenance (due to

a lack of aerodynamic forces), but at the same time often simple to repair. Repairing these deviations can reduce fuel consumption by up to 1.1%.

StorkJet’s observations so far show that even with a new fleet, one in every 8 to 10 aircraft has imperfections that cause increased fuel consumption.

With the large amount of data StorkJet is able to process we can go far beyond classical APM analysis, e.g. thrust reduction monitoring, down to particular intersection takeoff.

Thanks to Engine analysis module we have been able to identify negative fuel flow effect coming from engine technical issue.

APM at LOT after Storkjet AAPM implementation

There is now a unified APM process for the entire fleet — and having that same solution for the entire fleet means no additional costs for developing and maintaining different tools. It means that there is no need for APM software subscriptions and the elimination of APM data transmission costs via ACARS as well as the elimination of source data handling time — it is all automatic now. Furthermore, engineers can now focus on analyzing the results instead of processing the data.

If I were to sum it up in one sentence I would say that, in the overwhelming world of Big Data, Storkjet knows very well how to turn Big Data into small data and let you make use of them.
