A

ustralian rock band Crowded House had a 1991 hit with the song ‘Weather with You’ and the line, ‘Everywhere you go, always take the weather with you’. No, Aircraft IT is not going to start a music appreciation section but that song line perfectly sums up a topic of growing concern for airlines and aircraft operators. The weather has always been an important factor in flying with its ability to impact so many components in a successful mission.

From fuel consumption to engine performance to passenger comfort, the cost of delays and, in extremis, aircraft safety; large people filled tubes in the air are more susceptible to weather than most transport. Plus, of course, any incident that occurs today will quickly be filmed on mobile devices and broadcast across multiple social media platforms causing brand damage. Yes, that’s unfair to the airline but it’s the way things are. It would be much better to have the information to avoid any weather that could adversely affect the flight: ‘always take the weather with you’.

As well as the flight itself, the other significant part of the operation affected by the consequences of weather, damage, delays and missed connections, is ground operations and especially the ramp for the affected aircraft, of course, but also for all of the other arrangements that might need to be adjusted in order to accommodate any delay and knock-on consequences. It can be a very complex task.

We have two great case studies for you in this issue, both of which address the need to avoid bad weather.

From Air France and SITAONAIR, there’s an article about how to improve weather awareness and information on the flight deck. It’s about using data to ensure a better informed flight plan and to empower the pilot to plot a course less likely to be disrupted by poor weather. Similarly, Norwegian shares the experience of using advanced wind and temperature data from AVTECH to ensure that flight paths and flight levels always take account of wind at different heights and other weather phenomena, to plan a better flight profile as well as reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

On the ground, Lufthansa Systems’ white paper shows how introducing digitalization to the ramp might be achieved and, more importantly, what benefits it would deliver to better cope with those unplanned events that we’d all rather did not occur but which, for any Ramp Agent, are their daily work. Finally, our Vendor Flight Log this issue offers readers better insight into the thinking in and success of AVIO. On top of all that, there is the round-up of news and technology developments: plus, of course, useful features such as the ‘Operations Software Directory’.

Eagle Cap’s next generation flight Planning & Dispatch system In mid-June 2019, Eagle Cap Software introduced a next-generation Commercial Flight Planning and Dispatch system to address the unique requirements of regional, low-cost, and cargo carriers in North America. Eagle Cap’s solution consists of three primary components: a flight plan engine, server, and dispatch user interface. Together they form an end-to-end flight planning and dispatch system.

Eagle Cap CEO Dane Winchester said, “The system is built with configuration and customization to meet the needs of a wide range of customers and their unique requirements and workflow. Our goal is to deliver a solution that is easy to integrate with other flight operations systems.”

A demonstration of easy integration is the fact that the flight plan engine and dispatch user interface are available to customers as stand-alone products.

Customers who want to replace their current flight

plan engine with an engine that runs natively in the cloud can do so; while large carriers that need a truly configurable dispatcher user interface can customize and implement the Eagle Cap solution on top of their existing flight plan engine.

“Current solutions are burdened with legacy products built on architectures that don’t scale into modern cloud deployments and use proprietary interfaces,” said Winchester. “Eagle Cap is building a new set of products on modern architectures that are flexible, scalable, support mission-critical high availability failover requirements, and integrate with other products using standard industry methods.”

The Dispatch User Interface consists of a Microsoft Windows client application, an iOS mobile app providing mobility to the dispatcher, and support to easily create a web-based user interface. The Server Component handles data storage and access tasks, has business logic including configurable

automation and rules-based decision making, provides user management and authentication, and serves as the integration point for other systems and services. The Flight Plan Engine calculates 4D optimized flight plans and routes. Developed with flexibility in mind, the engine runs on a variety of platforms from the cloud to internal infrastructure.

“We think dispatchers will love the mobile application,” said Winchester. “Many airlines have started to provide dispatchers’ iPads so they can see what the pilots are seeing, but we believe our mobile app will make the iPad truly worth the investment.

Now the dispatch desk will go wherever the dispatcher needs to go in the operations center.”

The Commercial Flight Planning and Dispatch solution joins Eagle Cap’s other products that address the pre-flight and in-flight requirements of pilots and dispatchers across aviation market segments.

EASA certifies new Altimeter Setting Monitor function on A320 family, as part of Landing Surveillance suite

• Airbus and NAVBLUE introduce new functionalities over and above ROPS alerting, to further develop the comprehensive runway safety solution and enhance safety at landing.

• The first function of this Landing Surveillance suite, Altimeter Setting Monitor, receives its Type Certification

In mid-April 2019, NAVBLUE in partnership with, Airbus, Honeywell Aerospace and Lufthansa Group announced that they had achieved the integration and certification of selected functionalities of Honeywell SmartLanding® over and above ROPS (Runway Overrun Prevention System). Landing Surveillance is derived from the Honeywell SmartLanding® technology and is a set of monitoring and alerting functions designed to increase flight crew situational awareness during approach and landing.

Landing Surveillance is composed of three functions: Altimeter Setting Monitor, Approach Stabilization Monitor, and Taxiway Landing Monitor.

Altimeter Setting Monitor is now certified and available on the A320 Family. It can detect barometric reference setting entry errors and starts monitoring at Transition Altitude. Based on real-time conditions, the Altimeter Setting Monitor cross-checks the GPS altitude versus the barometric corrected altitude. This function issues an advisory alert to the crew in case a barometric reference setting error is detected.

The Approach Stabilisation Monitor and Taxiway Landing Monitor are planned to be certified in the next release. Approach Stabilisation Monitor will take the aircraft performance into account to issue an advisory alert in the case of excessive height and/or speed deviations. Taxiway Landing Monitor will actively monitor the aircraft trajectory and alert flight crew if the aircraft is not lined up with a runway below a minimum altitude.

ROPS is a performance-based alerting system developed by Airbus to guide and assist the flight crew in the go-around decision-making process and in the timely application of deceleration means on-ground.

Global Aviation Cloud: Lufthansa Systems provides complete solutions as cloud services In mid-April 2019, Lufthansa Systems announced that it has integrated its solutions for flight operations (NetLine), route planning and navigation (Lido) and finance management (SIRAX®) into a new cloud delivery platform following a successful project phase. The Global Aviation Cloud is a cloud service developed specifically to meet the needs and security standards of airlines.

Lufthansa Systems has thus created a forward-looking infrastructure for its customers which delivers administrative, operational and technological benefits.

The ultimate goal is to offer the entire Lufthansa Systems product portfolio as a cloud service in the near future.

“The strategic shift from monolithic legacy systems to cloud services is a major challenge in the aviation industry. Technologies such as AIX, which was the basis for the development of our Lido product, are not easy for cloud platforms to handle because they are closely tied to hardware. We therefore completely overhauled Lido’s software architecture so that we could expedite the creation of the cloud,” said Oliver Grimm, Head of IT Infrastructure Development, Technology & Information Security at Lufthansa Systems. “We successfully tested the various solutions from the cloud, and the first customers have already migrated. This has laid the foundation for the innovative and future-proof Global Aviation Cloud.”

Thanks to cloud solutions, it is often no longer necessary to run applications, systems and resources locally on a physical server (on premise). Instead, they can be provided and used as needed in the form of software as a service (SaaS).

“With the SaaS model we offer our customers full service from a single source so they can concentrate on their core business. As the service provider, Lufthansa Systems handles all of the IT administration, including maintenance and software updates,” said Grimm.

Lufthansa Systems will offer its NetLine, Lido and SIRAX® solutions as a cloud service.

Lufthansa Systems primarily uses Microsoft Azure as its public cloud provider.

Special technical set-ups relating mainly to security aspects turn the public cloud into a virtual private data center. With a growing number of data centers in 54 regions around the world, Azure can provide services in close proximity to customer sites, which enables faster data transmission. The strategic partnership with the cloud provider additionally increases the flexibility, scalability and security of the applications.

In late April 2019, Inmarsat, the world leader in global mobile satellite communications, certified Smart4Aviation’s Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) application, Smart MOBILE, for use on its award-winning SB-S digital aircraft operations platform.

Saudi Arabia seals deal for SITAONAIR’s state-of-the-art ATC services At the very start of May 2019, Saudi Air Navigation Services (SANS), the official body responsible for air navigation services in Saudi Arabia, announced that it has formally selected SITAONAIR to elevate the Kingdom’s air traffic management capabilities, through to 2025.

SITAONAIR will deliver its country-wide, unrivaled, state-of-the-art VHF and Digital Automatic Terminal Information Service (D-ATIS) solutions for Saudi Air Navigation Services (SANS), benefiting all airlines flying in Saudi Arabia.

Under the agreement, SITAONAIR will establish additional VHF stations providing coverage in new locations, including the Empty Quarter desert. It will also further optimize datalink coverage and services by upgrading both existing stations and SITAONAIR’s AIRCOMcats D-ATIS gateway server to better serve airports and airspace users.

The project will specifically aim to ensure coverage in the southeast and northwest of Saudi Arabia for enroute traffic, increasing the availability of VHF/ VDL networks at all main airports in the Kingdom and beyond.

SANS CEO, Eng. Ryyan Tarabzoni, said: “Safety is one of the foremost and primary factors at the heart of our operations, and in order to ensure that we operate at the highest safety standards we always strive to implement the best global safety practices and latest technologies.

At the beginning of May 2019, Lufthansa Systems announced the integration of the new feature with the name ‘Weather’ in its Lido/eRouteManual navigation solution. Weather phenomena can now be downloaded and displayed on enroute navigation maps without needing to install additional software. Text-based weather information is also available for every airport. With the introduction of the new Version 5.0 of Lido/eRouteManual, this weather data is just a few clicks away.

“The updated Version 5.0 of Lido/eRouteManual seamlessly integrates the new feature. The smart and reliable Weather feature enables pilots to access the necessary weather information more quickly and choose the best route based on the weather conditions.” explained Dr. Bernd Jurisch, Head of Flight & Navigation Products & Solutions at Lufthansa Systems.

Lido/eRouteManual Weather from Lufthansa Systems includes weather information that the pilots receive digitally in text form during their briefing at the airport. The visualization of weather phenomena such as storm cells, cloud heights and turbulence optimally supports the preparations of the flight deck crew. This saves time, reduces the risk of delays and increases safety.

Airlines using the Lido/eRouteManual Weather feature receive live weather updates every five minutes. Displaying current weather data on the navigation maps improves the pilots’ situational awareness and helps them make tactical decisions during a flight. The ability to avoid turbulence also increases passenger comfort.

Icelandair has already successfully tested Lido/eRouteManual Weather in practice. “For flights in our transatlantic network and in charter operations worldwide, the ability to provide our pilots with live weather updates from Lido/ eRouteManual equips them with a new tool to make better decisions in order to avoid bad weather. NAVBLUE reinforces partnership with Viva Air with new contract for further cutting-edge flight operation solutions Viva Air, the Colombian low-cost carrier, announced in mid-May 2019 that it has signed a contract with NAVBLUE for new flight operation solutions, including N-RAIDO Crew and Ops Management, Flysmart+ and N-RAIM prediction, therefore expanding its portfolio of innovative solutions to prepare the future.

N-RAIDO Crew and Ops Management is a highly configurable flight operations resource management tool for the Operations Control Center (OCC). The new generation weather and flight optimizer tool In late May 2019, AVTECH proFLIGHT announced an easy-to-use iPad app that visualizes flight related weather information like turbulence, winds, temperature, ice and more, all tailored to a single flight’s trajectory and time. Now all pilots can try out the app free of charge for a limited time on AppStore.

Niklaes Persson, Head of R&D at AVTECH and a commercial airline pilot himself, explained that the proFLIGHT app gives pilots a graphical view of the exact location of the aircraft and the surrounding weather, including invisible turbulence.

“To download the flight plan to proFLIGHT, a pilot that is registered in our system only needs to choose the flight number from a list in the app, which then automatically downloads all the needed data for that flight”, Persson said. “But it is much more than just another weather app. Having unique access to Met

Office’s 10 KM resolution weather data, which our backend servers extract individually for every flight, proFLIGHT significantly improves the accuracy of the weather. This in turn improves the situation awareness in the cockpit dramatically compared with other weather services available.”

However, since pilots are a traditional species, the data can also be shown in the traditional way waypoint by waypoint; it is up to the pilot to choose how to visualize the information. Persson pointed out that, although proFLIGHT has a simple interface, the app combines AVTECH’s premium weather services, Aventus Sigma and Aventus Nowcast.

“The data is always up-to-date when the aircraft takes off and can also be updated during the flight if the aircraft has an Internet connection”, he said. “In addition, SIGMETs are also digitally visualized in the app instead of just as a plain text including a list of

coordinates from the aircraft’s printer.”

Persson pointed out that proFLIGHT is available for all commercial airline pilots, even if the airline company is not a customer with AVTECH. Pilots from 25 airline companies around the globe are testing the service at the moment and AVTECH use their feedback to improve the app constantly. “For the time being, the app is free to download and use for all registered airline pilots”, Persson said. “I would recommend it for all pilots, since it puts the aircraft on a map and shows all the weather hazards in the vicinity, both vertically and horizontally. If, for example turbulence is coming up ahead, the pilot has access to the best information possible for the climb or descent decision.”

one and a half years to develop the first version of the app. Now AVTECH is focusing on making the app even smarter and more interactive. “In the future there will be a free version available based on the normal weather services, but to the paid version we are adding even more weather layers and new services”, he said. “For the moment it is available for iOS, but we are also working on a Windows version.”

One major advantage of proFLIGHT is that all weather material needed for a flight can be digitalized and accessed with only one interface required. “In fact, all printed weather material needed before take-off, which was formerly delivered to the aircraft, can now be shown in proFLIGHT”, Persson said. “We have recently started the EASA approval process for the app, which should take about six months to obtain.”

Lufthansa Systems and JR Technologies certified by IATA as providers for ONE Order Successful pilot project with Lufthansa proves expertise in IATA ONE Order

In early June 2019, Lufthansa Systems announced that they had recently received the IATA certification for ONE Order in the area of Accounting Providers and are therefore ONE Order capable. JR Technologies is the first vendor to achieve the highest ONE Order certification level in both Accounting Capability by partnering with Lufthansa Systems and in Delivery Capability Service through its DCS partners. Both airline IT specialists offer their expertise to airlines around the globe.

In a joint project, Lufthansa Systems and JR Technologies helped Lufthansa become the first airline worldwide to be ONE Order certified. One of the project objectives was to establish an end-to-end process for product offers, delivery and accounting based solely on the IATA standards New Distribution Capability (NDC) and ONE Order standards. In this pilot project, Lufthansa provided exclusive offers, including third-party ancillaries, to a dedicated target group on scheduled flights. These offers were priced by Lufthansa Systems’ Dynamic Pricing engine and processed through the JR Technologies Offer and Order Management System. Both flights and ancillaries were reported to Lufthansa Systems’ SIRAX® revenue accounting solution using the ONE Order messaging standard.

The ONE Order concept is designed to achieve a customer-oriented architecture with an efficient billing process and real-time synchronization of relevant information between all parties, including airline merchandizing delivery. ONE Order also facilitates universal, centralized access to a customer’s journey information, using a common data dictionary. This customer information, in turn, has a single identifier known as the order ID, which facilitates service delivery not only for the customer but also for the service providers, such as travel agents, interline partners, airports’ ground handling agents, catering companies, and third-party resellers. The new IATA standard NDC and ONE Order modernizes the system communication between airlines and travel service providers based on an XML messaging standard.

NAVBLUE launches N-Prediction ADS-B service With ADS-B, or Automatic Dependent SurveillanceBroadcast, surveillance technology an aircraft periodically broadcasts its position, enabling it to be tracked by air traffic control ground stations and other aircraft, and requires no radar.

ADS–B is an element of the USA Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) and from 1st January 2020 ADS-B carriage will be required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in US National Airspace System (NAS). A pre-flight prediction will be mandatory to provide assurance that the required levels of navigation position accuracy and integrity for containment radius and horizontal accuracy is available.

In order to help airline operators based in or flying to the USA, in mid-June 2019, NAVBLUE launched the N-Prediction ADS-B service, that can be accessed directly by airline customers or integrated with flight planning providers. Initially

designed for US-NAS, N-Prediction ADS-B service will be expanded to include future ADS-B equipage mandates globally.

“N-Prediction ADS-B service is a natural evolution of our prediction capabilities,” said Thomas Lagaillarde, Head of Flight Ops Engineering, OCC and ATM solutions at NAVBLUE. “And it’s spurring us to make additional service improvements such as ARINC 633 format flight plan ingestion for both N-RAIM and N-Prediction ADS-B service.”

Artificial Intelligence (AI): Paving the way for more efficiency in digital aviation Lufthansa Systems is currently engaged in various AI initiatives and projects covering flight scheduling, turnaround processes and passenger apps Air traffic is growing at an average annual rate of five percent. In 2035 around 40,000 aircraft will share the airspace – twice as many as today. Already today there are sometimes bottlenecks, in the air as well as on the ground. This can lead to delays or even flight cancellations, resulting in frustrated passengers and high costs for the airlines. To meet these challenges, the industry is looking for solutions based on artificial intelligence (AI). As one of the world’s leading airline IT specialists, Lufthansa Systems is involved in various projects in this field.

“Artificial intelligence is almost ubiquitous today, and its potential is huge. This is why we have been

working on this topic for years,” explained Mubashir A. Tariq, Head of Innovation and Portfolio Management at Lufthansa Systems in mid-June 2019. “AI solutions are based on the extensive data that is already available from the many different solutions used by Lufthansa Systems’ broad international customer base. The aim is to make even more effective use of the limited resources available without compromising the stability of the systems”.

The trick is to use this data in a smart and practical way. Lufthansa Systems founded a subsidiary in 2015 to handle this. zeroG employs around 50 data scientists and data engineers. They are highly sought-after experts in the field of intelligent data use and the development of AI solutions, and they also have a deep understanding

Deep Turnaround is all about avoiding delays in ground operations, specifically the turnaround process. Using video recording, an algorithm analyzes the turnaround process (e.g., passengers disembarking, cleaning starts, catering on site, fuel trucks missing) and keeps everyone updated on the current status in real time. If necessary, the parties involved can take measures to speed up the process or counteract any bottlenecks to ensure a punctual turnaround.

In collaboration with zeroG, an AI solution is being developed which analyzes historical data and uses the findings to suggest ways of optimally adjusting current flight operations in the event of irregularities. Machine learning is also being used here, meaning that the system continually learns and gets smarter the longer it runs. aiOCC is now in an early research phase with selected customers of NetLine/Ops ++.

Intelligent network planning is the focus of a research project carried out with Lufthansa Group Hub Airlines and zeroG. AI will be used to analyze the behavior of revenue management systems in order to make forecasts for optimal network planning.

To improve the digital passenger

experience, Lufthansa Systems has developed a mobile SDK for integration in passenger apps which calculates waiting times at airports using an AI-based prediction model.

This makes it easier for passengers to plan how much time they need to reach the gate. The inTime SDK can be easily integrated into any existing passenger app offered by an airline.

“The various concepts are being developed and tested together with airlines,” Tariq said. “From our perspective, AI will fundamentally change the way software solutions are developed. Instead of programming fixed or parameterized business processes, the algorithms of the future will be derived from data. AI-based technologies are paving the way for the digital future.”

Honeywell enhances Embraer legacy 650 jet with in-flight wi-fi In late May 2019, Honeywell’s satellite communications hardware, GoDirect Router, was installed under modification development by ALAMO Engineering on an Embraer Legacy 650 jet for the first time. The GoDirect Router allows access to its four-channel Inmarsat SwiftBroadband SATCOM, as well as Honeywell’s Ovation Select Cabin Management System. This is the first time the two solutions have been combined in the business aviation space. With this recent connectivity installation and Honeywell GoDirect as airtime service provider, the operator of the Legacy 650 jet will benefit from nose-to-tail Honeywell hardware and a router that’s 65% smaller in size and 70% more cost-effective than others on the market, ultimately leading to an overall reduction in aircraft weight and installation costs for the operator.

“Stable and fast in-flight Wi-Fi continues to be a staple for business passengers and increasingly expected on all jets, regardless of size. Honeywell supports largest jet upgrade with full suite of products Honeywell announced in late May 2019 that it has supported German-based, ACC COLUMBIA service center with upgrades to the latest cockpit, cabin and connectivity systems, alongside mandate equipment to retrofit and modernize a Bombardier Global Express jet. Since the refurbishment in November 2018, the aircraft is in full service and is the largest single aircraft update within the business jet space, making the jet the equivalent of a new aircraft at 10% of the cost, with enhanced safety and efficiency elements.

“The cost of buying a new business aircraft continues to increase, so operators are looking towards modifying their jets with upgraded

solutions as an investment,” said Nils Janssen, managing director, ACC COLUMBIA Jet Service. “As a revered service center, we’ve worked closely with Honeywell to upgrade jets to increase the value and install the most efficient solutions for our customers.

This ensures they’re able to reduce workloads for pilots though the latest

In addition to the cost savings, Honeywell and ACC COLUMBIA completed all upgrades at the same time to minimize aircraft downtime.

The modifications to the jet have significantly increased aircraft bluebook value and efficiency through a reduction in overall aircraft weight, demonstrating one of the key advantages to upgrading an aircraft, over buying an entirely new aircraft.

ACC COLUMBIA and Honeywell will continue to support and provide upgrades to the Bombardier Global Express jet, specifically with the SmartView Synthetic Vision system later this year, to complete the aircraft refurbishment.

However, when visiting airlines and entering the apron, I often bump into a more or less seventies scenario where ramp agents are still working with walky-talkies, clipboards, pens, pencils, and a lot of paper (figure 2).

In light of that, I’m going to use this article to consider the concept of a digital ‘Future Ramp’.

Let us first have a look at a ramp agent’s workspace: they are usually hired by companies that provide airport terminal services as well as airlines and airport authorities. They play a crucial role in delivering airside services to the air transport industry and making sure the plane is ready to take off. A ramp agent covers a range of important functions from the safety of the aircraft, ensuring that the plane is properly secured and checking the correct loading of luggage, cargo and mail into the plane, to guiding it into the proper terminal. Other duties include supervising the cleaning of the aircraft, directing the airplane to and from the gates, and operating the ground equipment necessary to secure, load, and unload the plane. Finally, they also might have to monitor relevant occupational safety regulations.

The above described range of duties / workspaces can of course vary. But it is most important not to forget this: in case of any deviations of ground services during turnaround time, the ramp agent will usually be the trouble shooter who will get the plane taking off right on time.

Trouble shooting in a black box

As punctual ground operations have become an increasingly critical success factor for the passenger travel experience, it is difficult to understand, why so many airlines still use pen and paper to manage their ramp activities; when digital (mobile) solutions could fundamentally improve their work environment and efficiency. For instance, they could provide real-time transparency about all important ground processes, such as turnaround management, load control, transfer passengers and bag management. But with pen and paper the ground operations situation put these important trouble shooters into a black box.

Experience and intuition remain as the main drivers for operational decisions.

This doesn’t have to be the case: a digitalized ramp is the answer. It is IT support on a mobile device bringing isolated core business processes together on a dashboard and allowing the ramp agent to better manage all workspaces (figure 3).

Turnaround management

Turnaround management is a critical success factor: punctual turnarounds have become a key element for the airline’s on-time performance. Though actively controlling ground processes is still a relatively uncharted territory for many of them, even in that there is great potential for improvement (figure 4).

This will include the option to immediately drill down to individual processes (cleaning, catering, etc.), Apparently not! A turnaround is like a pit stop which demands seamless coordination between the airline (boarding, etc.), the airport (jet-way drivers, buses, etc.) and service providers (catering, cleaning, etc.).

For this to run smoothly, everyone involved has to know what they need to do and at which time. It is a highly cross-functional process with many interdependencies that mean that simple paper, Excel-sheets or any other manual solutions won´t help to bring this complexity under control. So, how can digitalization help?

FUTURE RAMP: DIGITALIZE YOUR RAMP What could such a digitalized ramp look like? To answer that, I will share with you some best practices, that I have encountered for selected digitalized ramp agents’ tasks and workspaces: plus, I’ll add a few of my own ideas about how IT support can improve ramp activities.

We are usually talking about a turnaround time frame of 25-45 minutes for a short-haul flight, for example. Real-time visualization of the turnaround situation on a mobile device will therefore give the ramp agent the chance to proactively manage their assigned turnaround flights. Why? They cannot be in the belly, at the cargo door, at the gate and in the cabin or on the flight deck at the same time. A digitalized visualization of the processes around the aircraft allows the ramp agent to always be up-todate about the overall situation of their turnaround.

Management by exception

The visualization of a late fueling within the displayed turnaround is probably the strongest argument for a digitalized turnaround management.

This so-called ‘Management by Exception’ approach steers the situational awareness of the ramp agent directly to irregularities. S/he can then focus on solving them, instead of also needing to monitor simultaneously other processes that work well and on-time.

The digitalization of the highly complex and cross-functional turnaround processes has the following benefits: • Full transparency about the turnaround process; • Quick identification of delayed ground handling processes; and…

• Minimization of operational disruptions by taking timely actions.

All this adds up to increased punctuality by making up for rotational delays and minimizing handling delays; thus saving delay costs.

CARGO MANAGEMENT AND LOAD CONTROL Digitalized Load Control activities

Ramp agents usually supervise the loading and unloading of freight, mail and baggage from aircraft.

Digitalization will lever this core operational process to a significantly higher quality and efficiency level: digitalized load control allows the ramp agent to simultaneously and remotely update the latest load information directly from the apron into the core weight and balance system of the load controller (figure 8).

A digital solution for a ramp agent in load control will, among other features, provide the following basics: • Access to necessary flight leg information; • Workflow transparency and support; • Access to (relevant) documents; • Leg handling options (e.g. update of baggage numbers); • Interaction and communication.

Benefits of a fully digitalized load control process

The benefits of digital load control can be summarized as: • Visualization of load data to all relevant ramp personnel; • Option to simultaneously update the system directly from the apron; • Productivity increase; • Provision of easy and cost-efficient IT deployment; • Easy and fast training of staff (as ramp personnel have a high labor turnover rate).

TRANSFER PASSENGER AND BAGGAGE HANDLING

The importance of passenger and baggage misconnection handling Misconnected passengers and bags cost the airline industry not only millions but also their reputation.

Passenger sentiment has become even more critical than ever for airlines as passengers nowadays often share their experiences on social media.

Transfer passengers are mostly handled by the station / hub management and / or gate agents.

However, real-time transparency about the passenger re-accommodation status and the baggage situation would help the ramp agent significantly, because it allows her/him to pro-actively prepare for certain recurrent deviations in order to ensure punctual departures. The following two examples demonstrate the potential impact of digitalization here.

Transparency about capacity figures

Transparency about estimated, booked and actual passenger figures is a big plus. As in figure 9.1, if the red colored alert is displayed about more passengers to be expected in in Economy (Y) and Premium Economy Class (E) that might lead the ramp agent to the operational decision to prepare for more baggage to be loaded than originally planned by the booking figures. S/he orders an additional baggage container in advance, knowing that in such situations gate agents usually check passengers as they enter the boarding gate to bring larger hand luggage into the hold. This avoids being forced to submit this

order at the end of the boarding process, which might cause a delay because the container has to be delivered. It is all about saving precious minutes within a very limited time frame.

Transparency about connecting situations

At the bottom of figure 9.1 the ramp agent is fully informed about the passenger connection situation of the four booking classes. Red highlights indicate connections that are already re-booked by the station management. However, more interesting for the ramp agent are the amber streams. They indicate, in this case, that one connection with three economy passengers (0/0/0/3) might have a problem to connect with this flight because of delayed inbound flights.

In a digitalized world a simple click allows the ramp agent to retrieve detailed passenger connection information as figure 9.2 illustrates. S/he can for instance see that one economy class passenger (0/0/0/1) coming from flight JP 116 from Ljubljana (LJU) will arrive by a Ramp Direct Service (RDS) directly via the apron and not via the usual gate boarding process. Another important piece of information is that one business class passenger (0/1/0/0) from Aberdeen (ABZ) has a critical (amber) connection. That´s why the ramp agent might pro-actively decide to wait with the loading of this passenger’s baggage until it´s clear that he will make it. With such information the ramp agent minimizes the risk of having to offload the baggage later which usually causes delays of 5-10 minutes.

COMPLETENESS, SAFETY AND QUALITY CHECKS

The ramp agent usually assists in the set-up of the ramp and the storage of equipment. They might also observe safe ground-handling procedures and check the completeness of cargo items to be loaded for the outbound flight as well as be responsible for the maintenance of ground service equipment, including the performance of equipment checks and other company material. Duties might include inspection and reporting of inoperability, lack and absence of staff, equipment in use or compartment. A digitalized ramp makes any paper checklists or reports obsolete and also omits physical storage of documents and tracking of each action by automated log files and electronic signatures.

COMMUNICATION BETWEEN STAKEHOLDERS

The alpha and omega of efficient ramp operations is communication between all involved stakeholders.

On the ramp, special conditions apply: the ramp agent’s workspace is somewhere outside on the apron, s/he is moving around a lot and sometimes has to fight with noise and weather conditions.

Benefits of a digitalized passenger and bag situation

The best operational plans often get derailed due to unexpected deviations with impact on the passenger travel experience. Having the passenger sentiment in focus, smooth passenger and baggage connections will always have top priority. To achieve best results the ramp should be involved in the whole concept of the airline’s passenger re-accommodation management.

process (figure 11). Other requests might include additional cleaning personnel or to ask catering for an additional five business class meals due to unforeseen upgrades. The advantage is that s/he gets an immediate answer (approve / deny) from the stakeholder. Furthermore, each involved stakeholder has full transparency about the current workflow state in real-time.

WORKFLOW SUPPORT

When irregularities and unplanned situations occur the ramp agent needs to make fast decisions. The best operational decision is worth nothing if it isn’t executed immediately. One standard process is to order or request from any stakeholder (service provider, airport, etc.) certain actions or information (e.g. enhanced loading crews, ordering missing meals, etc.) and receiving a confirmation. Time consuming orders/requests via phone can be omitted easily here. Digitalization allows processes and pre-defined digital workflows to be designed: for instance, an ‘order – approve / reject’ mechanism that delivers immediate results.

As an example this can mean, instead of making a time-consuming availability call, the ramp agent can ask the fire brigade for a ‘parallel boarding’ with one fingertip to catch up the time for the delayed fueling

solutions and use of AI technology will fundamentally change how airlines operate on the ground. It also prevents airlines from only modernizing isolated core business processes, because a digital ramp provides a more holistic picture from the ramp perspective. It therefore enables a new level of data-driven collaboration across all airline ground processes and stakeholders collectively. This will lead to a significantly improved on-time performance and, thus, a seamless customer experience.

SUMMARY

Digital airlines have a greater potential to create innovation thus a unique customer travel experience by combining information, business resources and processes as well as digital technologies.

eather was once just a fact of life for aircraft, their passengers and crew.

However, there is no good reason why it should remain so today. We want to share with readers some thoughts on weather hazards and some information about how Air France is using eWAS (EFB Weather Awareness Solution) to ensure that, even if its pilots can’t control the weather, they can certainly avoid severe weather that would disrupt the flight, potentially damage the aircraft and threaten comfort or even safety.

THE IMPACT OF WEATHER EVENTS

Weather is dynamic with different types of phenomena that should be avoided, such as convection, lightning and clear air turbulence (CAT) which cannot be detected by the onboard radar and, according to IATA, is the leading cause of injury in non-fatal accidents. IATA also says that more than 25 percent of serious injuries result in diversion and therefore recommends that airlines should invest in a turbulence management strategy. Having a weather application during the briefing phase on the ground and in-flight in the cockpit will preserve the most accurate view on any changeable severe weather situation.

Such advice is set against the background that the annual cost to airlines for flight disruptions is around $60 billion. One factor that causes flight disruption is severe weather, which can lead to damage to aircraft and engines, can injure the crew as well as passengers and can disrupt the flight schedule for that flight and for following flights causing a knock-on effect. Also, EU compensation rules (derived from the Warsaw Convention as embodied in EU 261 law) mean that, if an airline is flying into and out of Europe or wholly in Europe, they’ll be obliged to pay their passengers compensation for flight delays. That can add up to a significant amount of money if a flight is delayed by more than three hours. It’s conducted on a per passenger penalty, so if the aircraft were, for instance, a 737 delayed for three hours, that could add up to

some €45,000 in passenger compensation. A delay caused by weather may be excluded from compensation claims but the follow-on sectors for that aircraft are still liable for compensation.

Compensation claims are one of the fastest-growing costs for airlines in relation to disruptions, adding up to hundreds of millions of euros for larger airlines.

Finally, the media is fascinated by stories of aircraft flying through severe weather especially where there’s damage to an aircraft, in which case, any photographs can go viral, including videos taken onboard. Airlines are then forced to deal with the brand protection issues arising from such an event.

INDUSTRY TRENDS

There are a number of convergent industry trends (the ‘perfect storm’ if you’ll forgive the pun!) that look likely to support the development of weather AIRCRAFT IT Operations • JULY-AUGUST 2019 • 43

forecast solutions: new elements that will make it easier to provide this type of service. Core EFB technology is maturing, so it’s simpler to introduce new applications. There are new weather datacapture techniques, which can use satellite and thermal imaging, and rapidly model that data, rendering it immediately through 4G and aircraft connectivity, to an application in the cockpit so that the pilot sees not only forecasts but also NOWCASTS, which are observations of current weather that were not possible before. Finally, significant weather events are going to have an increasing effect on flights, becoming more severe and more common in the future. Airlines need a solution for pilots that can seamlessly integrate into their cockpit workflow, can enhance the pilot’s overall weather awareness and which should reduce the pilot’s workload.

Severe weather hazards can lead to big operational disruptions (diversions, delays, cancellations, aircraft groundings because of damage). eWAS makes the pilot aware earlier and provides a visualization of those weather phenomena, helps them to be strategically aware of any event long before the onboard weather radar would inform them and with much more clarity than the significant weather charts currently used. It’s there to complement the onboard weather radar so that, when they need to undertake a tactical re-route using the weather radar, they are ready for it.

Better protecting the cabin crew

On the ground, the latest flight plan and weather are automatically refreshed and rendered in the application. The bulk of the upload takes place on the ground to control data costs. It includes a full view of the flight (including long haul or short haul, etc.). The solution is seamless and the pilot has very little data entry. They’ll need to look at a list for their flight and this will give them a strategic advantage on key dynamic situations that might occur during the flight, such as turbulence, icing, lightning or thunderstorm cells. Additionally, the solution uses multiple weather vendors’ data (DTN, WSI, Jeppesen, Météo-France and NOAA) who are best-in-class weather providers. Multiple providers give the pilot confidence that any event to which they are alerted will actually happen. For example, if one says, “this event might happen” and another doesn’t, the pilot will be in doubt.

However, if two or three say “this event is going to happen” the pilot will have more confidence.

A 2017 FAA study showed that cabin crew are very vulnerable to turbulence events. The study concluded that an average of 15 cabin crew members flying for US carriers are severely injured each year. Similarly, SITAONAIR undertook a study of a major European airlines with more than 200 aircraft. The survey showed that there were 29 cabin crew injuries in 2015 which led to sick leave averaging 40 days and with cover required for those missed shifts. Taking all of those factors into account generated approximately €1 million in costs per year. eWAS would reduce the occurrence of these events. It has allowed the airline in question to negotiate with their insurance company on the basis that eWAS delivers earlier awareness of potential significant weather, so flights are not as likely to experience those events, reducing the risk to cabin crew. The result is a documented saving of around €100,000 a year from their insurance premium.

A practical example from Air France

The example in figure 2 uses a flight from Johannesburg to Paris. The convective areas are colored orange and it can be seen that the flight will pass through some of them. Those convective areas are hard to spot on significant weather

charts but with eWAS the pilots can use this information to co-ordinate service with the cabin crew during the ground briefing. For example, if service is scheduled for when the flight will be passing through that convective area, it would be a good idea to delay service until after the aircraft has passed through any turbulence. This makes it safer for cabin attendants and a more enjoyable dining experience for the passengers.

while to complete all of the analyses contained in that list and the flight log.

To check using eWAS (right of the figure), the pilot can rotate their view to see, at a glance, all of the airports. If they are marked green, that means the pilot can be confident the weather will be good at that airport with enough visibility and ceiling to carry out a visual approach. If an airport is marked with red, it will need lowvisibility procedures, and if the airport is marked orange, it will be in between (ILS is probably needed). This really eases flight preparation for the pilot because they know which areas of the map to focus on and that makes flight-planning more efficient.

Figure 3 shows the Airport Analysis for a flight to Buenos Aires with some 50 airports provided to the pilots in the paper briefing package on the left.

However, that might be of limited use because many of the airports will not be familiar to European pilots who don’t regularly fly to South America. They won’t know where the airports are or when they will be flying over them, so it takes a

In eWAS, the pilot overlaid a satellite picture that had been analyzed by MétéoFrance and which showed active convection. The example shows the significant weather chart is inaccurate. Had the pilot relied on the significant weather chart and departed with minimum fuel, he would have encountered issues with a number of CBs (cumulonimbus clouds that often contain thunderstorms) all along the route.

In figure 4.3, the blue broken line indicates the actual route the pilot flew when briefed with the full picture from eWAS.

This example was taken from the ground. There is no in-flight connectivity on the A320, so the data was stored in an iPad before it was checked in-flight by the pilots as they planned their strategy. The benefits gained from eWAS are: • Situational awareness: check the SigWX charts, see nothing; check eWAS, there is a very accurate prediction of weather hazards. In this case, it was convection but it is also the case with clear air turbulence models.

• eWAS can be used on the ground during briefing for an accurate fuel evaluation. In this example, more fuel would be taken because it’s appropriate

It can quite quickly add up to a $3 million event. ” in the circumstances and it’s better to have extra fuel and a good strategy than to have to make a fantastically costly diversion.

• In-flight, the blue broken line shows the trajectory flown. Soon after take-off, before encountering any CBs, the pilot was negotiating a new trajectory with the ATC to avoid the thunderstorms. The pilot reported that it would have been more intuitive to have avoided the CBs on the left because that was Montpelier, the destination, but that would have taken the aircraft into more weather issues. All the issues faced with the weather radar are also shown once you have reached a point. The weather radar will be blocked by the first convection cell so the pilot wouldn’t know what is happening behind that leading cell and therefore wouldn’t know the most efficient way to avoid the cells. The pilot used eWAS to negotiate a new enroute strategy to give clean air all the way, avoiding CBs or any other hazard.

• Before landing, the situation was much the same; the pilot was on the route at around Mende but the STAR (standard terminal arrival route) was plotted directly through an active CB. The pilot was able to anticipate the CBs and negotiate with the ATC a new approach from the north; an approach that was in the approach manual and in the FMS and the cell was avoided.

Using eWAS turned what could have been a difficult flight with CBs all the way into a smooth journey because eWAS enabled a good strategy (enroute and at the approach) and an accurate fuel plan just in case the cells were moving or a hazard occurred just in front of the aircraft.

EXAMPLE: AVOIDING HIWC

We’ve now seen the savings that can be achieved by avoiding schedule disruption and injuries to cabin crew, some really strong ROIs (returns on investment). Now we’re going to focus on one specific case that can affect certain engine types where there is High Ice Water Content (HIWC), a phenomenon that appears high in the atmosphere around convective

thunderstorm cells. Boeing has a good data source that it can provide to aircraft to avoid these types of areas. The HIWC can be ingested into the engine as small crystals that accumulate around the compressor and melt (the compressor is hot) in a cycle until eventually there are irregularities with power to the engine.

Bits of ice can drop off and cause rotor tip damage and it’s possible to reach a situation where the aircraft is forced into a diversion — which was the real event illustrated in figure 5.

A Boeing 777 encountered an icing event that became so severe it had to divert.

But the costs soon mount up. It cost $200k to accommodate the passengers in a hotel; there was a $500k bill to replace each engine; then there was the cost of the aircraft not operating its planned sectors; and the cost of another aircraft that had to come out to take the passengers to their intended destination. It can quite quickly add up to a $3 million event. If you take the advice from Boeing to the cockpit and can show your insurers that you tried to avoid these ice crystal areas but still have that damage, the insurance company can pick up some 50 per cent of the engine repair cost. This is a good example of eWAS enabling cost avoidance through the use of high ROI-generating data in a real world situation.

Many of the eWAS customer base initially start using eWAS in a non-connected mode in-flight since it still has a rich source of forecast weather that lasts for many hours, outlasting even the longest long haul sector. However, some weather phenomena are very fast changing and it makes sense to connect the eWAS app in-flight. To this end SITAONAIR has developed a module called AppsConnect to make in-flight updates possible, as per figure 6.

THE PHILOSOPHY THAT UNDERPINS AVIO Dominic Fung started his career in aviation in 2001 as a Singapore Airlines Limited (SIA) Trainee Station Manager, and went on to work for Changi Airport Group, ARINC (now Collins Aerospace) and subsequently Thales. Prior to his current role as the AVIO Sales Leader for Asia Pacific, he served as Thales InFlyt Experience Regional Marketing Director for Asia Pacific. Dominic Fung holds a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science.

Aircraft IT: Your name, your job title and the name of the business?

Dominic Fung: Dominic Fung, Sales Leader, Asia Pacific, AVIO. Aircraft IT: How did AVIO get started?

DF: As we often say in the company, AVIO started because our CEO wanted to make his work easier. Our founder Kris Van Den Bergh is a pilot by profession. In the course of his work, he saw a need for an integrated platform that serves both the flight deck and the flight operations center.

With that vision in mind, he founded Aviovision in 2010 to realize this need for the airlines.

Since then, we have not only striven to make the job of a pilot easier but also, through our applications, extend the same work convenience, effectiveness and efficiency to the flight dispatcher, ground maintenance engineer and the cabin crew. We have

created a platform for the airlines’ staff to achieve real time collaborative working and communication.

The acquisition by Thales in 2016 was a further boost to our business ambition. Combining Thales’ expertise, we now have a more comprehensive product suite comprising hardware, application, flight data and cybersecurity expertise to meet airlines’ total IT needs. We are now also in a better position to serve our customers through our expanded international network. We are proud to say that we now have more than 220 customers using at least one of our solutions or services for their flight operations.

Aircraft IT: What is the attraction of aircraft-related software?

DF: Aviation has always captured the world’s attention. A reporter once told me that features on aviation always help improve readership. In the IT

world, working on aircraft-related software carries the same aura and excitement. To me, the attraction of aircraft-related software lies in the marriage between the sophisticated world of avionics and the latest of digital solutions/innovation. Compared to as recently as five years ago, we now have more tools and greater avenues to use IT to help airlines improve flight and operational performance. At the same time, with the increased industry focus on digitalization, we find that airlines are more willing to embrace the latest technology to enhance their business competitiveness. All these certainly keep our business exciting and interesting.

Aircraft IT: What is the guiding business principle that drives AVIO? DF: Customer satisfaction and Passion for aviation. Customer satisfaction –

we exist because we believe we can fulfil our customers’ needs better than what the others can do, and doing our work well to keep customers satisfied is the overriding principle in everything we do in this company. Passion for aviation – our company is made up of many pilots, engineers and former airline staff so that we have aviation in our blood. We have a passion for this business, and we must keep this motivation to constantly think of better ways to improve flight operation.

Aircraft IT: What has been AVIO’s greatest technical achievement to date, and why?

DF: A common feedback from the airlines is that our EFB application, AvioBook, has a user interface that is intuitive and very user friendly.

Aircraft IT: In a sentence, how would you summarize what AVIO does for aviation customers?

DF: We are the future of flying: enabling airlines to do things more effectively and efficiently.

Aircraft IT: What has been AVIO’s greatest business achievement to date, and why?

DF: From a start-up in 2010 to being part of Thales; we are now a key provider of EFB solutions in the industry with more than 2,000 aircraft flying with at least one of our systems.

We are extremely proud to have loyal customers that have not only stayed with us but also deploy more applications from us to cater to their growing operations. The best is yet to come, we look forward to our growth in the Americas and Asia-Pacific region in the years ahead.

Aircraft IT: What is new on AVIO’s development horizon?

DF: We are continuously doing many exciting things to help airlines in their operation. For our AvioBook application, we are introducing a new function known as In-flight Optimization (IFO) to help airlines reduce/optimize flight time and fuel consumption. We have also released a flight tracking solution which will allow the airlines to comply with the mandate and much more. In terms of hardware, we are further developing our AvioCast to allow easier data flow between the cockpit and EFB application. There are also specific projects with our customers that we will share in due time. All these are useful tools for the airlines’ digital transformation.

Aircraft IT: What have been AVIO’s disappointments and what have you learned from them?

DF: Rather than say disappointments, I would say that in the course of our work, convincing airlines to implement EFB solution can take a longer time period than expected. It is just the nature of the business – multiple stakeholders and complexity of flight operation. What we take away from these experiences is the importance of better understanding of the airlines’ immediate and future needs, and working out an incremental approach to help our customers better manage and implement their IT solution.

Aircraft IT: What will be the next big thing in Aviation IT? DF: Big Data and machine learning for better decision making, and enhanced cybersecurity for IT operation.

A

s the standfirst suggests, this article will be about how airlines can use advanced weather data to save emissions and fuel. I’m going to refer to a project that Norwegian has run with Avtech Sweden and in collaboration with the Swedish Energy Agency who can administer grants when there is a project that can save emissions and be good for the environment plus act as an independent auditor for projects. It has been interesting to participate in a project where there is a government agency. First, as the airline participant in the project and the business seeking to save on emissions and fuel, it will be useful to offer readers a brief profile of Norwegian.

NORWEGIAN

Norwegian is the fifth largest low-cost carrier in the world with around 10,000 dedicated colleagues operating around 500 routes to more than 150 destinations around the world. Currently ranked as the most fuel efficient airline operating across the Atlantic, Norwegian operated, at the time of writing, 118 Boeing 737 800, 8 737 MAX 8 (a growing fleet as new aircraft are delivered to replace older 737 models being phased out) and 31 787 Dreamliners.

THE PROJECT

Many vendors contact Norwegian with another new super product to save fuel and if we could select 50 solutions, each claiming to save 2%, we wouldn’t use much fuel at all. Naturally we need to pursue the most realistic and promising opportunities and identify the ones that might match Norwegian’s business processes.

At the outset of any project, there is a lot of uncertainty (figure 1).

Readers will be familiar with the Lean cycle (top right of figure 1) in which you build, measure, learn… to fail fast in order to succeed sooner. So, whenever a vendor wants to approach an airline, it’s a good idea to try to make any proposal as small as possible in order to get across the threshold and get something started.

It’s also important to be clear on what is the value proposition. There are a lot of new systems being introduced. Potential customers see the green square box (figure 2), what the vendor will provide, but any potential customer also needs to know what kind of problems they, as an airline, have that the vendor’s solution might help — the red circle. The airline needs to identify what it needs to do, the pains and gains and how can it all be matched to the vendor’s proposed solution.

FMC OPT is FL390 at 61.5 tons. At that level there is 0 WIND but tailwind is reported at lower levels. Actual TW at various levels in the table to the right.

The level with the highest excess wind is FL 330 where 45 kts tailwind is 17 kts above the 28 kts break even wind. This is then the best FL, with a fuel saving of 3.7% compared to FMC OPT. Note that there is even more tailwind at FL310, but less excess wind, hence less savings.

One specific challenge identified by Norwegian was that wind is different at different levels. So you might find that, at FL (flight level) 360 there are 85 knots of wind while at FL 240 it is 45 knots: therefore, you might prefer to fly higher if it’s a tailwind whereas you’d want to fly lower if the wind is a headwind. Also, these wind areas can shift hourly which means that, to find the best flight level for the aircraft, airlines need that information.

Further down, at FL 310, there’s even more tailwind but it doesn’t offset the penalty for flying that low. So, in this case, the optimum level for wind correction would be FL 330.

In order to do these kinds of wind-altitude trade-offs, requires the most accurate wind information and, if you’re flying close to a Jetstream, wind can change hourly.

So, if the weather in the flight planning system is already six or seven hours old, it might be less accurate.

The flight management computer (FMC) on the 737 or any aircraft can show the optimum flight level, the one that is most fuel efficient or time and cost efficient according to the Cost Index at a given level. This will also change with weight of the aircraft. On the 737 it’s fairly simple, it doesn’t provide a recommended altitude which can be found on some aircraft models. In the example in figure 3, if the aircraft is flying with a strong tailwind further down it could be beneficial to trade off from the theoretical optimum altitude and fly lower in denser air if that can be offset with more tailwind.

And this is the breakeven wind; so, let’s say there is 15 knots stronger tailwind 4,000 ft. below the FMC optimum level; that would be just a breakeven trade-off. In the example, we have a 737 with a weight of 61.5 tons for which the FMC will calculate that the optimum level is FL 390. But if there’s a stronger tailwind at other levels, for example at FL 330 there is a 45 knots tailwind, that is 17 knots more than the breakeven wind, so that’s the excess wind beyond the breakeven point and offers a fuel saving of 3.7%

Readers will be aware of the top of descent where the aircraft leaves Cruise level and starts to go down for landing; this point has to be calculated by the FMC. It can be at roughly three times altitude as lateral distance in nautical miles from landing but the FMC will make a more exact calculation taking into account the aircraft altitude, weight, Cost Index, the use of anti-ice, wind and temperature. On some models, the econ descent speed itself is also adjusted for wind (not on the 737 800 but on the 737 MAX) The top of descent point is adjusted based on wind expected during descent; so if it’s going to be a strong tailwind, it would be necessary to descend earlier; with a strong headwind it would be necessary to descend later. However, if the wind is different from expected, the descent calculation will not be correct. If the descent starts too early, there will have to be compensation at a lower altitude, maybe a level-off segment or a partial thrust descent which all costs a lot of fuel. If the descent starts too late, that also costs money because the aircraft will have spent time in cruise when it could have been in an idle thrust descent. That will have to be compensated by either higher

select the relevant values and enter them to the FMC — they don’t need to type in everything, just the information for the flight level at which they are cruising.

This one has been updated to provide more wind-altitude trade recommendations.

Also, as can be seen, there’s another system from Avtech, called Sigma, which provides high resolution turbulence and significant weather forecasts. This is beneficial for longer flights over sea areas where there is light, medium or even severe turbulence. The system offers high accuracy and is mapped to waypoints so that the pilot can see where there is light, medium or severe turbulence.

NORWEGIAN’S PROJECT

There are two parts to the system that Norwegian uses for wind and temperature (figure 5). There’s the Nowcast system for Autoload capable aircraft (FANS); then there’s the Air version for non-Autoload aircraft where the information is delivered as a paper print-out for the flight crew to enter manually. The Air version was part of the trial with the Swedish Energy Agency to verify whether this idea could generate any savings at all in terms of fuel.

Norwegian started with the Aventus Air version on the Boeing 737-800 fleet, followed by the Nowcast version on the 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliners and, finally, the Sigma system on the 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliners. The Swedish Energy Agency provided support throughout the project, partly funded the project, and audited the report and findings following which they published a final report.

Weather forecast

The default weather available from typical systems uses a forecast grid of 140km whereas the Avtech system takes a high resolution 10km grid version with tighter time intervals between updates as well as interpolating between these and adding the actual route to be operated. The effect of that, we measured, was a 50% reduction in wind error (figure 6).

We measured, on all the flights, what is the flight planned prediction of wind at any waypoint and the wind we actually had, based on FDM (flight data monitoring) data and then the wind as predicted by Avtech — the blue line of the graph.

This will increase the accuracy of the top of descent, improve Vnav (vertical navigation) performance at lower levels to ensure that, for example RNPAR (Required Navigation Performance - Authorization Required) can be executed with less speed deviations and, in general, improve the flight crew confidence in all stages.

TRIAL

Trial setup

We did a trial with providing the Avtech Air solution to the entire Norwegian 737 fleet, delivered to the flight deck eight minutes after take-off when a printout came automatically from ACARS for the pilot to review the values and enter them into the FMC. On the aircraft with the Nowcast option, it was sent straight to the CDU (control and display unit) on the FMC and the flight crew received a prompt to execute and accept the wind uplink. All the flight data on the FDM was analysed with the actual wind experience compared with the wind predicted

by Avtech and the wind provided from the flight planning provider. It was analysed for cruise phase and descent phase Figure 7

On the 737, the flight crew can only enter three winds to the flight management computer’s descent forecast page: pilots can select any levels they like but only three values can be entered for descent wind; then the FMC will linearly interpolate between those values with a straight line — that will be the line on top of the red example in figure 7 with three red lines being the ones that have been input to the FMC with a straight line in between, and all the other vectors there are the actual winds during the descent. Where there is a white space, lower left, that’s the wind error, the difference between what the FMC believes the descent wind to be and the actual wind. Plus, there is a shift in wind at the low level at, say 5000ft, with the wind changing from a headwind to a tailwind which won’t be captured if just three wind levels are entered. On the green example, the Avtech winds have measured where the wind shift is and then made sure that, on the uplink to flight crew, there will be a wind vector catering for that tailwind. So now, the small area where there is a wind error can be seen

Trial results

The results of the trial showed first the head and tail wind error in descent (figure 8).

The grey line represents the wind error that would be in FMC descent predictions if no winds at all were entered, when the FMC would default to whatever is the cruise level wind and linearly interpolate from that. The orange line there is based on the flight planning system. And the blue line is from Avtech.

Figure 9 shows an average fuel saving per flight from a relatively high volume of flights.

It can be seen that there are some peaks, it’s not evenly distributed. The fuel saving in descent is based on measuring the wind error and how this translates into a fuel saving. Obviously, we cannot change how the wind is in reality, but having more accurate data gives a better prediction of top of descent which translates into a fuel saving. This fuel saving cannot be measured specifically because the numbers are still so small and there’s a lot of scattering of data, we’re not sure about any error for weight or the engine efficiency. When a huge volume of flights have been completed, it will be possible to achieve some statistical significance and better validate all the results, but, for this trial, we calculated the fuel burn using the flight plan winds compared to the actual winds and looked at what would be the fuel increment resulting from that lack of accuracy compared to the Aventus winds with higher levels of accuracy and then this delta fuel burn is what can be seen.

Figure 10 shows the air distance for a descent from a given level dependent on the ISA temperature deviations.

The temperature of the air affects the distance required for a descent. If there are inaccurate ISA deviations the FMC will get inaccuracies as well. The temperature forecasts that Norwegian got from Avtech were almost spot on with the actual temperature from the FDM (flight data monitoring) data. Compared to the flight plan, there was more accurate temperature.

Combining the wind error and the ISA deviation errors (figure 11) there is some benefit from this all. These benefits can be additive or can cancel out each other, it depends randomly, but still it provides a benefit.

Figure 12 shows the fuel penalty during descent and Aventus has a small penalty, compared with if there were a perfect world with no errors, and several kilos less than the flight plan.

But, does having more accurate winds into the flight management computer for the cruise phase really improve the fuel burn? Not necessarily (figure 14).

But for the actual position right now the FMC will use the wind measured in flight: however, for the predictions down path further down the road, it blends that in with the predictions. There’s a blend of predictive wind and actual measured wind. At any point where the aircraft is now, the FMC uses the actual wind at that point. The benefit in having more accurate winds is, for cruise, better arrival time and fuel predictions. Also, Avtech not only provides wind at the aircraft’s current level but at levels above and below the aircraft to facilitate the evaluation of wind-altitude trade-offs: that’s when it comes in handy and where we generated real savings.

The savings were related to cruise level selection and we compared how flight crews were able to save fuel flying a different level than the one originally planned.

So we measured what would ideally be the optimum flight level for a flight with all the wind-altitude trades: what was this level and what was the level the flight planning system provided, what’s the delta fuel burn between those two and then we looked at the level predicted by Avtech which resulted in the graph in figure 14.

On this map, you’ll see Norway at the top centre and the blue dot that marks Oslo while, in the upper left hand corner, there is a green rectangular box showing the fuel saving on descent. On the date pictured, there is no particular weather at Oslo. And the fuel saving is rather small. On the next day the same but there was a cold front pushing from the West so that the following day the front was just over Oslo and the fuel savings potential increased (figure 15.2).

WEATHER ANALYSIS

As we saw above, there were some spikes in the data with more inaccuracies some days than others in the winds provided by the flight planning provider compared to the actual and we started to analyse these, particularly with the descent into Oslo airport (figure 15.1).

This is consistent with the weather charts all the way through, i.e. the days where there was a lot of fuel saving potential, using the Avtech system, were typically days when there was a lot of weather over Oslo. If there is a storm coming in, the descent forecast can change from minute to minute which is why it pays to have an accurate system that provides updated data. On a day when the weather was clear, the flight plan weather was more than good enough, there were no big changes.

PILOT FEEDBACK

In addition to our measuring the improvements, we also wanted pilot feedback so we sent out a survey to the pilots (it can bring out the best and the worst in people!) which showed some pilots were really happy using the Aventus system and others not so much, so the full bell curve of replies. We had 1,500 pilots on the first of our two surveys. User satisfaction was relatively good at about 7 or 8 from a potential score of 12. We asked a series of questions about their use of the Aventus system and received mainly positive feedback. The outcome was that most pilots said it worked OK, not much change, or it worked very well and the benefits were achieved. Only 2% said that, for them, it didn’t work at all.

FINAL REPORT

The Swedish Energy Agency read the data on the 737 (not the 787) so most of the flights were short flights and there was an average of 22kg of fuel save for each flight based on this trial and it’s something with which Norwegian will be continuing for further evaluation. We took the uncertainties that we have and ran through them 10,000 times in a Monte Carlo simulation (figure 16) which suggested that the fuel saving on those 737 flights was around 0.2%.

We have certainly appreciated the value of accurate and more detailed weather inputs at Norwegian and I hope that you have gained some value from reading about our experience.

Yearly, it means that for one aircraft the savings can reach $80’000. With 25 aircraft in its fleet, Transavia can save $ 2 M per year. It is a very promising offer for any airline.
