ata is dangerous. No, I haven’t joined the Luddite anti-technology activists; far from it. My OTT opening remark should, of course, have been ‘data is dangerous… in the wrong hands’. More and more of what happens in the world, such as processes, decisions and the retention of information, is governed by data. It’s largely beneficial inasmuch as it ensures that all actions and decisions are informed with the most possible information and as near to the time of action as possible. But it’s more than even that: data makes possible all of the valuable technologies that are transforming the MRO/M&E business with capabilities like paperless records, mobile functions, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. In truth, data is as powerful a resource as, say, nuclear energy: harnessed and properly managed it can deliver huge benefits but harnessed and poorly managed or harnessed by the wrong people it can be very dangerous.

Fortunately, the aviation IT business has been harnessing, managing and storing data for a long time and is already making use of or developing the technologies to ensure its proper and safe deployment in the sector. This issue of Aircraft IT MRO is, as always, packed with useful information and has a strong focus on data; collecting it, using it, keeping it safe and storing it for the long term.

You’ll see in this issue the second part of our interview with Rob Saunders’, drawing on his considerable experience of the opportunities for turning data into value. From AFI KLM E&M there is a white paper on the innovative culture in the MRO Lab Singapore and, especially, on ideas being developed to use blockchain in aircraft MRO; something that will go a long way to addressing data security concerns. FLYdocs offer further thoughts on how harnessing data will help with the lifetime management of aviation assets, increase utilization and speed end-of-lease processes. Summing it all up, IFS offer readers a round-up of four emerging digital technologies that will become more prominent and more useful in 2018. Drones, AI and Mobility are familiar ideas but how they might develop and what they are going to do in the future makes interesting reading; plus Digital Twins offer a strikingly powerful use of digital technology in MRO. Our comment column focuses on GDPR, a major data development for 2018, and, as always, there is the regular round-up of the latest news and technology developments in the sector. Lufthansa Technik Logistik Services on the way to a digital warehouse Smart data glove, automated guided vehicle, automation

Lufthansa Technik Logistik Services (LTLS) is driving digitalization forward by purposefully using Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. The aim is to improve the efficiency of operational processes and lay the foundation for reducing the workload of employees.

For this purpose, in mid-January 2018, the wholly owned subsidiary of Lufthansa Technik AG launched a targeted warehousing program as part of its digitalization strategy.

Within the framework of this program, fundamental processes in all areas will be automated, digitalized and interconnected. The pilot location for the digital warehouse is Munich Airport, which is particularly suitable due to its strong growth and modern infrastructure as well as the fact

that new aircraft types such as the Airbus A350 are stationed there.

“We are currently testing and starting to

implement digital assistance systems, localization technologies and driverless transport systems in selected areas of activity. We cooperate with specific start-ups. For instance, we are introducing the smart data glove of Proglove as well as an automated guided vehicle of Agilox” said Dr. Harald Kolbe, Head of Digital Innovation at LTLS. Core logistics processes are not only being digitalized in Munich, but also at other locations such as Frankfurt and Hamburg. The ultimate goal is to implement efficient processes at all locations. To keep realizing new ideas at short intervals and with great speed, LTLS relies on agile project management. But cooperation with start-ups and the implementation of a group-wide innovation culture at all hierarchical levels are also important elements on the way to a digital warehouse.

SIA Engineering Company and CaseBank Technologies sign MOU to collaborate in Data Analytics In early February 2018, SIA Engineering Company Limited (SIAEC) announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with CaseBank Technologies — a division of Aircraft Technical Publishers (ATP) and the leading provider of integrated diagnostic and troubleshooting software solutions — to collaborate in the field of data analytics. Under the MOU, the parties will explore collaborating in the areas of research, development and commercialisation of advanced diagnostic software for use in the aviation industry.

The deployment of advanced diagnostic software during aircraft maintenance will streamline the troubleshooting process and reduce aircraft maintenance downtime and component removal costs.

This collaboration combines CaseBank’s experience in developing and providing software and services, with SIAEC’s engineering and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) expertise, to provide airline customers worldwide with enhanced aircraft maintenance solutions. CaseBank’s guided diagnostic software employs ‘hybrid reasoning’, the core technology that combines

engineering knowledge with field experience to drive the company’s integrated solutions for servicing complex equipment, improving uptime and performance.

“We believe the combination of these efforts with CaseBank will benefit our airline customers. This collaboration enables us to jointly deliver a solution that will improve the accuracy of fault isolation and corrective actions through the use of analytics,” said Mr Foo Kean Shuh, Senior Vice President Innovation & Technology of SIAEC. The transaction is not expected to have a material impact on the financial performance of SIAEC in FY2017/18. None of the Directors of SIAEC has any interest, direct or indirect, in the transaction.

First OASES contract win of 2018 is also first win for Commsoft in The Netherlands In mid-February 2018, Commsoft, developers of one of the world’s leading MRO IT systems, was delighted to announce that Corendon Dutch Airlines has become the latest member of the fast-growing global OASES user community.

Part of the international Corendon group of companies, Corendon Dutch Airlines started operations under its own AOC in April 2011 and currently operates charter flights to a number of destinations around the Mediterranean — including Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Egypt and Morocco — from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Maastricht Aachen Airport. Under the terms of the new contract, the airline will be using OASES to support its fleet of three Boeing 737-800s.

OASES is a ‘best-of-breed’ system structured in a modular format. Corendon Dutch Airlines will be using the Core, Airworthiness, Materials, Line Maintenance Control and Planning modules and has also expressed a strong interest in adding the proposed Compliance module when it becomes available. All modules will be accessed through Commsoft’s Private Cloud service, avoiding any need for the airline to install additional hardware.

Nick Godwin, Commsoft’s Managing Director, commented: “We’re delighted to welcome Corendon Dutch Airlines, our first customer in The Netherlands, to the truly global OASES family. Initial implementation meetings have already started with the airline’s team and we’re looking forward to the system going live in time for the peak season.”

Air Belgium selects Envision from Rusada™

Belgian start-up selects hosted maintenance & engineering technology platform

Air Belgium announced in mid-February 2018 that it has selected Rusada’s Envision™ technology to manage the airline’s maintenance and engineering information system.

The new international airline, which is preparing to commence direct flights from Brussels South Airport to Hong Kong International Airport and to major and medium-sized cities in Mainland China in the coming months, has selected Envision to support its Continuing Airworthiness Management Organisation (CAMO) and quality & safety obligations for its current fleet of Airbus A340s.

Raymond Deswartes, Technical Director of Air Belgium said: “Despite being a start-up airline we have established a set of clear values by which we’ll operate; modernity, transparency, efficiency, quality and fairness are all behaviours we will strive to deliver”. He continued: “Rusada very clearly demonstrated that they understand our airline and there was clear synergy between our core values and Rusada’s culture. In addition, Rusada is a proven supplier already working with several aviation companies in Belgium such as ASL Airlines Belgium, Noordzee Helikopters Vlaanderen (NHV) and Sabena Aerospace.”

A key motive behind the decision to select Rusada’s solutions and services package was the flexibility that the technology company can offer Air Belgium.

Julian Stourton, Rusada’s CEO said: “Air Belgium has opted for a hosted solution which means the database is hosted by us and information is accessed online.

The benefit of this to Air Belgium is that they do not have to maintain the system infrastructure or invest in expensive IT equipment up front, which is an important consideration for a start-up airline”. He concluded: “We recognize that [for us] to be successful our customers must be successful and so we listened to what Air Belgium required and made sure we could offer a technology solution that fits their needs”.

IFS, the global enterprise applications company, announced in early March 2018 that it has hired Darren Roos as the Chief Executive Officer of IFS. The appointment is effective 1 April 2018 and aligns with the retirement of Alastair Sorbie at the end of Q1 2018.

Roos is a proven enterprise software leader, with a track-record for establishing and scaling global software businesses. Most recently Roos was President of Cloud ERP business at SAP and, prior to that, significantly grew international operations at Software AG, which enabled the company to triple in size during his tenure.

Ramco Systems and XinFin join forces in Singapore to develop Hybrid Blockchain Solution for Enterprises Two global software specialists announced in mid-February 2018 that they will join forces in Singapore to build breakthrough hybrid blockchain solutions that combine features of public and private networks to provide secure and rapid transactions for the aviation, logistics and human resources industries.

Global enterprise software specialist Ramco Systems and Singapore-based open-source blockchain developer XinFin FinTech Pte Ltd will use the latter’s proprietary XDC01 distributed ledger protocol to build a new architecture based on Ramco’s software solutions for the three sectors and help provide blockchain led solutions to Ramco’s global enterprise clients.

Both companies will work on the hybrid

blockchain solutions out of Ramco’s innovation lab in Singapore– an international financial centre which is placing a high emphasis on FinTech– amid rising global interest in distributed blockchain ledgers.

Backed by Singapore’s Economic Development Board and launched in 2016, the lab focuses on disruptive applications across multiple industries.

The collaboration will lead to a set of distributed ledgers which can prevent users from sending tokens to incompatible networks or non-existent addresses — a current problem facing the fastgrowing blockchain industry. The new architecture will also reduce congestion of blockchain networks which inhibit security, speed and scalability. These ledgers record digital assets’ movements among different parties. Transaction data is time-stamped and freely accessible but cannot be modified or deleted, ensuring transparency and security. By decentralizing the ledger, trust among counterparties is increased, facilitating faster and more secure transactions.

Beyond enterprise cloud adoption, blockchain is the next technological wave that can disrupt industries. A mechanic on the tarmac can use blockchain-based maintenance logs to track the entire life cycle of an aircraft engine, authenticate

Air Tahiti Nui takes off with AMOS Swiss-AS was proud to announce in March 2018 that Air Tahiti Nui has chosen AMOS as their ‘software of choice’ for the new B787 fleet. After a short and very effective pre-sales process, the companies have signed contracts to implement AMOS. The excellent reputation of AMOS in the industry reduced the software selection process to record times. Key personnel at Air Tahiti Nui, who had already worked with AMOS at other airlines, clearly influenced the decision in favour of AMOS. The involvement of knowledgeable AMOS staff in the implementation process will facilitate the know-how transfer and assure that complex tasks, such as the definition of to-be-processes, will be tackled with ease. Another key factor of success is that Swiss-AS is fortunate to have French-speaking staff in the Customer Services department who will

be involved in the project and will ensure smooth communication links between the Air Tahiti Nui and Swiss-AS.

Unique opportunity for cut-over of M&E software systems The project approach is somehow unique in the Swiss-AS implementation history: Air Tahiti Nui will ‘go live’ with AMOS without initially managing any aircraft in the system. Their current legacy system will be used in operation until the last A340 aircraft has been phased out. In the first project phase, the AMOS environment will be updated with OEM documents and the Maintenance Program for the new B787 fleet. Once the approval of the Civil Aviation Authorities has been granted, the airline will start to phase in the B787 aircraft. The beauty of this

approach is that no legacy data needs to be transferred from the old to the new software thereby avoiding the complexity of data transfer and consistency checks.

FLYdocs sets new performance standards for end of lease transitions FLYdocs, the aviation data and records management solution provider and global industry leader in managing the lease transfer of aircraft and assets, proudly announced, in late March 2018, their most productive month to date, with February concluding the largest volume of successful transitions to date.

The achievement which included 6 transitions in the same week, 4 in 4 consecutive days, a weekend delivery and even 2 on the same day.

A new agreement, announced at the start of April 2018, with global telematics company Pinnacle will enable the two companies to connect an airport’s ramp service into one single, managed solution that provides airlines and ground handlers with real-time insights into vehicle activity anywhere at the airport. The result is better on-time performance, lower maintenance costs and greater fuel efficiency.

A connected ramp solution from Honeywell and Pinnacle creates a new way for airlines and airports to increase safety and efficiency. Telematics hardware on ground vehicles transmits data, which feeds into advanced software that gives airlines and ground handlers actionable data at their fingertips. This combination of connectivity and telematics provides real-time insights into vehicle use and maintenance requirements, as well as exact locations of all ramp operations.

Airlines and ground handlers can utilize predictive maintenance for ground support equipment and also see reduced fuel costs for planes due to quicker turnaround times on the ground. “[This will create] a new connected ramp reality that addresses one of the last untapped areas in the aerospace industry,” said Kristin Slyker, vice president, Connected Aircraft, Honeywell Aerospace. “We’re ready … for any customer ready to improve safety and operational efficiency on the ramp — from the moment an aircraft lands until that same aircraft is airborne again.”

Mark Bunting joins FLYdocs as Director of Technical Operations — Asia / Pacific FLYdocs was delighted to announce, in early March 2018, that Mark Bunting has joined to take up the role of Director of Technical Operations — Asia / Pacific after leaving his most recent post with Emirates as Aircraft Asset Lifecycle Manager.

Mark has had a long, varied and hugely successful career in aviation spanning almost 30 years. He began as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer — Team Leader for Royal New Zealand Airforce back in 1990, and subsequently enjoyed success with easyJet, Air New Zealand, SR Technics and Nordam, all working with fleet transitions and records management accountability.

As the Director of Technical Operations — Asia / Pacific, Mark’s focus will be on FLYdocs customers in the region, ensuring they extract the most value from the FLYdocs platform during normal operations as well as during aircraft acquisitions or returns.

Additionally, he will help new customers get up and running on FLYdocs.

Mark has worked in all aspects of technical records and end of lease transitions. He’s gained extensive on-the-job experience, as well as managed large teams. Project planning, risk evaluation, resource management, budget development, aircraft documentation preparation, during check coordination and post Technical Acceptance support are all tasks he is confident and fully competent in, and he looks forward to utilising these skills.

Frontier Airlines switches to FLYdocs for fleet records management and aircraft transition services

FLYdocs, announced in early April 2018 that Denver-based ultra-low cost carrier Frontier Airlines has signed a long-term agreement to manage their aircraft fleet within the FLYdocs platform. Using the platform, Frontier will be able to keep all maintenance documentation current and up-to-date throughout the life of their assets; this will deliver significant process efficiencies during end of lease transitions, as well as protect asset value and enable compliance on demand.

As FLYdocs integrates with Frontier’s TRAX maintenance system, all relevant maintenance data will be uploaded into the FLYdocs platform, which will then automatically build compliance documentation in near real-time. This will provide Frontier with fully digitized end-to-end aircraft compliance management and enable Frontier to proactively manage its forthcoming aircraft transitions and ensure a smooth delivery program.

It’s not up-to-date because, at the time of writing, we had just signed a new joint venture with Sabena Technics which will open in Singapore and is in line with our growing presence in Asia, a strong presence in Europe and in Miami with Barfield as well as in Dubai. The first thing we’ve created is a brand called ‘The MRO Lab Adaptive Innovations’ to include all innovation in AFI KLM E&M and our global network.

Adaptiveness is, as I’ve already said, very important for us to be able to tailor and adapt our services to our customers and the MRO Lab Adaptive Innovations is organized with a network of ‘Innovation Leaders’ in all departments throughout the company and those people are ready for change management; they are the ones who are going to push the disruptive innovations. Our motto is ‘Think big, start small and act fast’. That is the main value we would like to emphasize in the MRO Lab Adaptive Innovations.

THE MRO LAB

Let me describe the MRO Lab, the tools we have and some key innovations that we’ve been able to release in the last year. Participation in innovation is in our DNA and is one of the pillars of the MRO Lab. To support that, we’ve designed ‘creativity rooms’ all around our facilities world-wide (figure 5).

and undertaking participative innovation. That means that any employee in the group can submit an idea, carry out the project and get rewarded for it. And over the twenty years we have collected around a hundred thousand suggestions at the rate of 4,000 to 5,000 ideas a year; it is our main generator of ideas. In figure 4 you can see a couple of images from the different award ceremonies that we organize every year in Paris.

In February 2015, we wanted to accelerate our rate of innovation with an emphasis on how we’re going to organize innovation, and how we’re going to proceed and move forward by creating tools.

The idea was that if we design meeting rooms that were not usual, our white collar employees will be encouraged to think out of the box. That was the

At the time of writing we were building a new concept called a Maker Space; a Maker Space is a room where blue collar employees can go and use tools and machines such as 3D printers. They are trained on those machines and the goal is for them to work on their professional and personal projects within this room, at no cost to them; we believed that will generate more ideas and innovation within the company.

… on projects such as using Drones to inspect the outside of an aircraft or an App for cabin description so that, when a part needs to be replaced, the part number can be accessed quickly and ordered through a mobile device.

The training department is really active with innovation in AFI KLM E&M. Most of their course material has been moved from paper to augmented and virtual reality using HoloLens and HTC Vive. The Training photos in figure 8 are real; it is how we train our people today… understanding, less hours within an actual aircraft.

We’ve done some case studies using a HoloLens with a group of five people and we confirmed that they came to understand their training much faster than people using other systems such as a PDF.

Last but not least, Prognos is our predictive maintenance solution. I think this is our greatest source of pride today in AFI KLM E&M, being able to predict component failures on aircraft and engines and we are about to also release this solution to our customers. long before it happens so we can remove, repair and replace the component before facing an AOG (aircraft on ground) situation.

THE MRO LAB SINGAPORE

The last big resource in the MRO Lab Adaptive Innovations is the MRO Lab Singapore, a coinnovation center that AFI KLM E&M established in February 2016 with Ramco Systems, and the Singapore Government. At the Lab, we undertake digital innovation and use new technologies to solve business pain points in MRO. Generally, we develop these innovations in two to three months; we’ve been working with some great technologies such as HoloLens and RFID (see more below) and we have a great multicultural team (figure 9). They are

impressive: able to learn fast about new technologies such as Blockchain which they knew about a bit when we first mentioned it but they had never used it. So we did it and a couple of months later we had completed a use case. That’s the spirit of it; we’ve been able to tackle new technologies and address A crazy intercultural team new business pain points every month with our multi-language, multi-cultural team in the Lab.

Some examples of a new technology we’ve been using (figure 10) would be, given that adaptiveness has always been a key value for us, we’ve been using big data, GPS tracking, Bluetooth Beacons, IoT, augmented reality, virtual reality, voice recognition… they all sound techy but we use them for specific use cases when we think there is a value for using that technology as opposed to another one. We’ve

The most recent product concept that we’ve released is the 787 Operators Community, dedicated to our customers. It is a web platform for customers who fly the Boeing 787, for them to be able to share their best practices and operator experience around the 787. And, at the time of writing, all the operators in question were testing and giving AFI KLM E&M their feedback on the platform.

That’s a key point when we do a proof of concept dedicated for customers: we want to give it to the customers, get their feedback and, if they’re happy, we’re happy. If, on the other hand, they’re not satisfied, then it’s probably not a good solution.

BLOCKCHAIN USE CASE

further want a multidimensional approach, which is quite interesting as this is not only a technical design or technical solution, it has to deal with legal issues, with organizational and change management, and other considerations.

The first use case we tackled was in the aviation supply chain, mainly because we had identified four aspects of Blockchains that are also essential in the aviation supply chain: resilience, traceability, integrity and disintermediation.

For a small demo we’ll look at a specific part where an operator, for this purpose Air France, is requesting the MRO, AFI KLM E&M, for the loan of a part; in case of an AOG situation. Today, most of the work is done using ERPs; however, ERPs do not communicate so much, they don’t exchange much data and the data is not secure, it could be hacked.

So the video shows how users in the operator and the MRO can share the information for the loan. A licensed engineer in Air France has already requested the part, the Loan Officer in Air France has request for a loan to the MRO (AFI KLM E&M) Demo and is waiting to receive the part. The short video below shows how it works.

Now, to the Blockchain use case. We have developed a Blockchain use case in Singapore for the main reason that we wanted to try this technology, to see how valuable this might be for the aviation sector.

However, we still want to follow a few principles. We want to make it realistic — it has to answer a real and specific business need not just be developed for its own sake, i.e. if the job could be done with a normal E&M – Aircraft Commerce Bangkok 2017 database, why use this more complicated one? history of the specific part. This is the Blockchain of that specific part, its history, and is not hackable nor can it be modified. So, the MRO selects the part, selects the certificate number and proceeds through the loan or rental. As the demo shows, we can see that this has been registered within the Blockchain.

So now it is part of the block and cannot be modified any more. Next, the Air France clerk logs in to receive the goods; so he has received the part which he can confirm while the MRO can still see the history, the Blockchain of this part, and, once again, this cannot be modified; and it is public, so that whoever needs to can have access. Then Air France can confirm that it has received the part and it’s all good. The part is now in Air France’s hangars where a licensed engineer will install this part in the AOG aircraft, i.e. remove/install a part — the first two columns in the video are for the part that has been

removed and the next two columns for the part that has to be installed. The engineer proceeds through the change, and this also is public so that everybody knows what has happened.

A few weeks later he has used the part and now is ready to remove it because it has been loaned and needs to be returned to the MRO. So the engineer removes the part, to avoid paying any extra charge, and all the usage that has occurred while the part was installed on the Air France aircraft — how many hours, how many flights — is all tracked and has been logged in the Blockchain.

Having removed the part, it is returned to the MRO and that is logged within the Blockchain. So this will improve the traceability of the life of a component. As an MRO, we can log in and access the user receipt to confirm that the part that has been loaned or rented has been received back; the MRO can check the history and that the contract signed with this customer is what really happened; because the Blockchain records what really happened: then, if everything is correct, the MRO can approve.

Summary of Blockchain What Blockchain saves depends on which technology. Blockchain will save a lot of administrative tasks but there are technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) that will also save AOG time.

Once there is a Blockchain linked to all the ERPs of the different operators and MROs, by modifying something in an ERP a request can be sent by one user or knot to the Blockchain and, depending on validation by the other knots in the Blockchain, which are able to decide whether to accept a new block, new information can be entered in the database. So, if a mistake has been made and the user/knot wants to correct it in the Blockchain, they’ll need the approval of the other knots. Each AIRCRAFT IT MRO • MAY-JUNE 2018 • 30

blockchain needs to be tailor-made and, for dealing with mistakes, it is necessary to consider how it can be tackled and ensure that, if a mistake occurs, it should be possible to correct it and update the blockchain.

CONCLUSION

These have been some of the processes and ideas we have developed in AFI KLM E&M to drive innovation plus some ideas on Blockchain and where it might be used.

espite longer-lasting aircraft, more durable engines and innovations in maintenance techniques, recent research has shown maintenance spending continues to increase. In fact, airlines now spend more money on maintenance than on fuel or crew. The need to cut maintenance, repair and overhaul costs is a pressing issue for airlines, as is the need to keep assets operationally available. So how can airlines keep aircraft in the air while reducing maintenance costs?

Here are four major technological developments that will help airlines meet these challenges and produce major benefits across the commercial aviation industry that readers will encounter through this year — in fact some of them are already here.

SEEING DOUBLE: DIGITAL TWINS WILL SET NEW MAINTENANCE STANDARDS

Maintenance is one of the major contributors to aircraft operating costs. Flight delays and cancellations from unplanned maintenance cost airlines millions of pounds every year, not to mention the impact on customer satisfaction. Because of this, the minimization of operating costs and optimization of operational availability continue to be top priorities for airlines.

Digital twins, a state-of-the-art method of monitoring engines when in use, will help airlines achieve these aims. A digital twin refers to a virtual replica of a physical asset, like an aircraft engine, which can display, to engineers on the ground, how the engine is running while the aircraft is still in the air. These can then be linked to IT systems to help streamline and optimize maintenance processes and operational availability.

Doubling down on maintenance To make this happen, engineers compile thousands of data points specific to each asset during the design and manufacturing phase of the engine.

These are then used to build a digital modal that tracks and monitors an asset in real-time, providing essential information throughout an asset’s lifecycle such as engine temperature, pressure, and airflow rate.

By implementing digital twins and creating a virtual model of the asset, organizations can receive early warnings, predictions and even generate a plan of action by simulating ‘what-if’ simulations based on weather, performance, operations and other variables — helping keep aircraft in service for longer.

for an airplane’s landing gear. Sensors were placed on typical failure points on the asset, such as hydraulic pressure and brake temperature, to provide real-time data and help predict early malfunctions or diagnose the remaining lifecycle of the landing gear.

Armed with this sort of data, engineers and MROs can compare data gathered by sensors on the asset to that of its digital twin, which can be put through the same paces the engine experiences as it takes off, flies through different types of weather and undergoes regular wear and tear. If the two data sets don’t match up, then a request can be put in for the engine to enter servicing.

According to IDC (IDC FutureScape: Worldwide Digital Transformation 2016 Predictions), companies that invest in digital twins will see a 30 percent improvement in cycle times of critical processes, including maintenance. As 2018 unfolds, expect to see more benefits as the technology matures.

AI IN THE SKY: TAKING PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE FROM LUXURY TO MUST-HAVE

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is invading the skies. A SITA report claims half of airlines surveyed will invest in AI and cognitive computing in the next three years, while a recent Aviation Digital Transformation survey for IFS saw 37 percent of respondents identify AI as a key area for investment.

One of the biggest opportunities for AI involves predictive maintenance. An Oliver Wyman report (‘Forestalling the future with predictive maintenance’) suggested that predictive analytics can help optimize maintenance planning and capacity by reducing the need for routine maintenance and only triggering repairs when needed — helping increase fleet availability by up to 35 percent and reduce labor costs by 10 percent. AI is helping bring this to reality by using data from in-service aircraft to predict potential issues. These

Airlines look to the cloud But one of the main challenges facing AI adopters is that storing and analyzing vast quantities of data can overwhelm IT systems. The next generation of cloud solutions is here to help process this data, meaning everything from predictive maintenance to in-flight performance and the real-time aging of the aircraft can be better tracked and understood.

Cloud solutions are a vital tool in the new aviation IT landscape, especially when dealing with scheduled and unscheduled aircraft maintenance.

Having smarter assets and mobile devices wirelessly connected to store data in the cloud removes the need to physically store and process data on-site.

As digitalization transforms business models in 2018, the application of advanced analytical methods from AI will no longer just be good to have — it will soon be business critical.

MOBILITY AND THE CLOUD AT YOUR SERVICE — SAAS OFFERINGS MAKE MOBILE DELIVER

Airlines aren’t just eyeing the cloud as an answer to dealing with AI — cloud services also go hand in hand with mobile solutions. Recent research by IFS of 200 aviation professionals found mobile computing is one of the top five areas identified for investment in 2018, with over 30% of respondents identifying mobile as being a key driver of digital transformation.

At the same time, Software as-a Service (SaaS) solutions are helping drive new efficiencies into commercial aviation operations, particularly for line of business needs such as line maintenance execution and planning. Previously airlines and MROs have been concerned about the amount of physical hardware they might need to adopt new technologies, but the transformation into a SaaS/ mobile environment using tablets or devices and eliminating the cost of purchasing and managing on premise technology is proving to be attractive.

Some of the biggest improvements in maintenance techniques can be derived simply from engineers being able to take a closer look at everyday tasks, such as aircraft inspections — a task that drones will revolutionize in 2018. Today, typical visual inspections of commercial aircraft can take up to six hours. Drones have the potential to cut this time dramatically while offering greater accuracy of checks — freeing up engineer time, reducing maintenance costs and improving safety.

Initial drone systems have already been used to enhance visual checks made by engineers. Low-cost carrier easyJet has been trialing drones for known or unknown fuselage inspections for some time now and is looking to fully implement the solution for hail and lightning strike damage in 2018.

But developments are now being made to automate these inspections — not replacing engineers, but giving them better tools, ones they can deploy quickly with less planning and training.

Workers would still control the flight of the drone, but using visual processing algorithms combined with enterprise IT systems means the drone can send work orders straight to the maintenance crew as soon as a fault is identified.

Safety first However, challenges remain, as drones must receive regulatory approval for both outdoor and indoor flights. For instance, FAA Part 107 requires unmanned aircraft operators to ensure that aircraft and controls are fit for safe operation prior to any flight. Regional regulations that change from country to country and state to state must also be considered, as must operational complications, such as security safeguards, communication with ongoing air traffic and airport authority approval to make sure drones are used safely.

IFS A&D Despite these hurdles, there is a growing opportunity for the industry as the benefits start to outweigh the challenges in 2018. In the U.S. for example, the UAS Integration Pilot Program was recently announced, aiming to pair unmanned aircraft operators with state and local governments to safely expand cutting-edge unmanned aircraft operations. The program will shape a regulatory framework that balances the benefits of drone technology while lessening the risks to public safety and security.

Commercial aviation leads the way The aviation industry is at the forefront of innovation — IFS research confirmed that commercial aviation leads in the take-up of new technologies for digital transformation to overcome some of the industry’s greatest challenges. Airlines, MROs and other parties are constantly looking to make major improvements in operational processes and, although these technologies may be at the start of their aviation lifespans, the commercial aviation industry is fully aware of the benefits they will bring.

SAVING THE DOLLARS

All of the foregoing in part 1 of this paper was interesting but the big question, that needs to be answered of course, is how much money can be saved? Here, Rob had to be a little more guarded.

“That is very difficult to know exactly because there’s no way of knowing what a delay will cost until there is one. Of course, it’s easy after the event but typically delays and cancellations avoided are not well recorded. Moreover, the cost of a delay itself seems to be quite arguable with many different numbers from different sources. Having said this, the consequential costs of missed connections, displaced crew, consequential delays are far more significant to the airline even if not so much to the Engineering budget. As airlines expand their IT capabilities in bringing their systems’ information together in an accessible way, the true costs often referred to as intangible are becoming tangible and better recognized.”

This led us into the subject of Big Data and Digital. So what will this do for airlines? Rob’s response was reflective, “This is something in which I’ve always been very interested and have found a little amusing. There are a lot of people promoting Big Data and it’s going to save us.”

Big Data — only as good as the inputs In a return to his characteristically positive outlook Rob continued, “I think that if you give it a clue, big data will produce an answer but we risk overestimating its current capabilities. This is something that always looks like it should deliver, and I’m confident it will, but I’m not yet aware of anything game changing that’s fallen out aside from data validation of what we kind of suspected already — which in itself is very helpful — but I don’t think it’s

One reason is that, unless there is very accurate data going into the data pool, the algorithms advertised will give us very informed answers on ill-informed data and that will be a problem. That, I believe, is where the mobility apps start coming in and that’s the true value here.

Yes, absolutely we can look at productivity improvements and ease of use, but I think getting accurate information at source is going to be of key importance to big data being valuable. It also seems that suppliers are suggesting new sources of data for the data pool when we are probably not getting the best out of what we already have.”

BIG DATA AND BIG DOLLARS

We had been talking about big data but big dollars are the answer that the CEO wants. In this context, Rob suggested that there are a few things to consider about cost management.

“I’ve spoken to a number of airlines in various forums and was also fortunate enough to work with an airline group for a few years. Generally speaking most airlines have a focus on operational performance (OTP), reliability metrics and stock service levels etc. This is the ‘interesting stuff’ and there are some big costs that can be influenced but that might not get the attention they deserve. As an example, most airlines have a warranty person or even persons. These are super people who do a wonderful job probably in a way that has been in AIRCRAFT IT MRO • MAY-JUNE 2018 • 37

place for many years. They usually have spreadsheets, Access databases etc, that they have enhanced themselves for incremental improvements.

In one case, following a project to create warranty enhancements using a wider set of information that was already available, warranty claims increased by 200 per cent. This was very welcome but quite unexpected. When you start to look at things like repairable items that aren’t serialized on their first removal and automating that sort of thing, which can be done with data and a good M&E system, you can get serious money back. I’m not sure if this can be classified as big data but it is exactly the right result.

“In a similar vein with component overhaul, having more information enables users to look at alternate sources and that can be alerted automatically. With engine hours, new aircraft types have DAC (Direct Accumulation Count) cycles which enable partial cycles to be counted based on operational data. If you can automate that coming out of your system and track it, then this will support lower cost per flight hour contracts.”

Leasing Another opportunity to turn data into money would be with leasing where, “If you can get ground time down from three months to even two months,” Rob suggested, “that amounts to another month of operation for that aircraft. Also if you’re not late on return, you will avoid penalties.”

MROs will need to be more efficient to offer an extra advantage to their customers and, if not, they’ll need to be more efficient to exploit the demand. The bottom line is that faster Base turn times are good for everyone regardless of the market demand.

So, we could easily understand Rob’s rationale for turning data into money but what about the other major consideration: utilization? He suggested that airlines check escalations. “If you can pull accurate data from your mobile system where you are automatically tagging the non-routine back to the originating maintenance schedule item, you’ve got a very rich source of data that can be mined accurately to actually suggest, ‘check escalations’. If any of it is missing, then there’s a question and you’re going to have a problem with the regulator.

This is an area where, when you can have very accurate tagging that has been codified at source, providing a much better source of information.”

Heavy check downtimes Figure 9 is about the MRO adding value. Some people in the MRO community are saying that in Asia there is over capacity of MRO services which, if correct, could mean less demand for maintenance than the MROs expect. Of course, it could go the other way, with a boom in aircraft operations leading to more maintenance requirement. But either way, AIRCRAFT IT MRO • MAY-JUNE 2018 • 38

How does Rob see ‘data to money’ being of value in either scenario?

“What I’d like to see from an MRO is firstly loading the maintenance schedule, the MPD (Maintenance Planning Document) and generating a long term hangar plan sympathetic to the airlines’ needs. This is entirely possible with some of the applications that can generate a ten year plan in about two hours, if you’ve got the data, and then take this data through to individual checks.” That was his opening comment, continuing, “It’s possible to generate a Check Library to pre-load sequenced tasks within the checks. The Mobile Mechanic applications being produced by some suppliers enable production managers to see and actually sign-off these tasks in real time. It’s all available. This means that hold ups and clock stops can be proactively managed and down times reduced.

This is really where the money is. All the things in base maintenance are great but what the airlines want is faster and reliable turn-around times. And I am convinced that aircraft today are on the ground too long. Even if an aircraft comes out on time, if you’ve got supply chain problems and all the inefficiencies, it was planned on the ground for too long in the first place.

There are enormous opportunities now that these applications are maturing: the effort of getting them up and running is worthwhile because there’s a lot of dollars to be saved. For instance, if aircraft are generating say US$50,000 to 70,000 a day, applying that average return to even half an airframe across a year will amount to huge benefits for the airline.”

“So, Mobility can provide the data to support reduced grounds times and check escalations. Although many

other factors are involved, it’s reasonable to aim for a whole airframe to be liberated from a 50 aircraft fleet by reduced maintenance ground time requirements.”

Algorithmic forecasting

Warming further to the topic, Rob suggested another opportunity that’s becoming available with data. “Let’s say we look at our gear removal cycle and we run this application to forecast when the gear are going to be removed;” he considered, “if you can accurately tell the supplier that the gear is coming off on this day or even within this month in three years’ time, then you can share that value with the supplier. If you then start applying that to all repair orders, suppliers can manage repairs to your maintenance needs and reduce their overheads. It’s great for the maintenance side but it’s also good for supply chain, will reduce the budget and make it more predictable. This is the power of accurate data and that is where the money is.”

Other benefits from data There are also some less direct benefits that can be generated with data. As Rob explained, “Compliance is a given until you’re ‘out of it’. If you go out of compliance, you could be grounded at huge cost so, again, it’s worth investing to avoid that risk. And this, again, is how the accuracy of mobile applications, the intelligent applications, the data hunter gatherers back to the M&E system or through to alerting systems such as Boeing’s AHM or Airbus’ Airman are so important.”

GETTING IT DONE — ACCOUNTABILITY AND COMMITTMENT So we understand the value of having data capable of being used but how do you do all the above things, we wondered? It’s all very well standing in front of the people in the finance department and promising that if they let you spend this money on this system, you’ll be able to give them the money back. However, they might be skeptical. In response, Rob recalled, “One thing that I have developed and used is to look at inherent benefits, process change methods and new concepts (figure 10).

“An inherent benefit would be; put an e-log in, you will get the MEL right you won’t have a mistaken over-run so it’s inherently better. The data integrity is inherently better and there won’t be large volumes of paper. The process change is really about using it.

If you’re going to go out and buy a new system but don’t put the effort in, don’t change the way things are done, you probably won’t get the benefit. So, when I hear that 60 per cent of IT projects are unsuccessful and don’t deliver, it’s not necessarily the application, it’s the organization, the adoption.

“The idea is to build an environment that invites innovation. Then get a traceability document in which the budget holder writes a plan to say how he’s going to do it, at which point he has to consider how much money he really thinks he can save and identify the resources he really needs because it’s a lot more difficult to write it down and commit than it is to talk about it. Then, take that document and get the budget holder to sign it. Ironically, having just talked about the merits of electronic signature, an inked signature on an implementation and benefits document is probably a good way of getting real commitment, an internal contract if you like.

If there was any doubt then this will be the time to find out. Finally, you then take the money from the budget in line with the benefits realization plan.

That has proved to be quite a reliable way of making sure that the people buy-in. It’s much more effective than getting a show of hands in a management meeting.”

Rob left Cathay Pacific in June 2017 to be a consultant but continues to support the One World engineering group, IATA Paperless Operations and standards and is currently chair of the Boeing /USI eLog user group.

AIRCRAFT IT MRO: HOW I SEE IT

Be ready for GDPR EU General Data Protection Regulation and MRO/M&E software systems. Sander de Bree, CEO, EXSYN The new European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will become enforceable on the 25th of May 2018. A lot is being written about it and there are probably more speculative stories around on the topic. So, to help airlines and MRO/M&E understand how it might impact on them, here is a straightforward guide.

GDPR breaks down into 13 specifics: • It will be applicable to all companies handling the data of EU citizens; • The definition of personal data is now wider (genetic, mental, cultural, economic, social identity. IP Addresses); • Obtaining consent for processing personal data must be clear; • There will be a ‘right to be forgotten’; • People on whom data is held (users) may request a copy of their data in portable format; • A data protection officer (DPO) will be required for every organization holding data; • Any data breach (inc. accidental data loss) must be reported to the authorities within 72 hours; • Products, systems and processes must consider privacy-by-design, i.e. as integral from the outset; • There must be legal basis for collecting and processing data; • Data holders must take reasonable data protection measures; • Users have the right to know what data about them has been collected and processed; • Only authorized individuals can access the data; • Organizations are only allowed to record and/or hold data required for their business.

GDPR DEFINITION OF PERSONAL DATA

A key fact is that, according to the GDPR definition of personal data, any airline MRO/M&E software system will effectively be classified as a system containing personal data based on the following criteria: • User logins; containing very basic information such as first name, last name, email address; • Staff records; depending on the depth and functionality of the MRO/M&E system, it can contain anything from emergency contacts to home address to company authorizations; • Worktime registration on job/task cards; working times that are traceable to individual people; • Shift planning; again, depending on the depth and functionality of the MRO/M&E system, it can contain anything from shift schedules to actual staff attendance times to reasons for leave and/or overtime.

In each of the above scenario’s GDPR will deem the MRO/M&E system as being a system that holds personal data. This does not necessarily mean there will be large problems for airlines and MROs. After all, one of the GDPR rules states that a company must have a legal basis to collect this data. We can presume this legal basis exists during the period of an employee performing work or being contracted by a company.

IMPACT OF GDPR ON DAY-TO-DAY WORK WITH MRO/M&E SOFTWARE

The rules that would more impact day-to-day work at airlines and MROs working with an MRO/M&E software solution are the following: AIRCRAFT IT MRO • MAY-JUNE 2018 • 41

• Obtaining consent; every employee needs to give their consent that their data (or a portion thereof) can be stored in the MRO/M&E system. This consent can be given by means ranging from a written letter or a notification when logging into the MRO/M&E system.

• Right to be forgotten; every employee (or former employee) of the airline or MRO can file a request for his/her data to be anonymized or removed from the MRO/M&E system. Only when legal implications exist, e.g. for a CRS (Certificate of Release to Service) statement, is an airline or MRO eligible to refuse this request.

• Requesting a copy of the data; every employee (or former employee) has the right to request a copy of their data held in the MRO/M&E software.

Whenever such a request is made, the airline or MRO needs to comply with the request.

• Right to know; every employee of an airline or MRO has the right to know what information about him/her is collected in the MRO/M&E system and what this data is being used for. Think of items such as the reason for collecting working times on Job cards/task cards.

• Authorization; only authorized staff are eligible to access the data. This means a thorough ‘access right’ structure needs to be in place and this needs to be actively managed.

Overall, and potentially more important, every company needs processes and policies in place that ensure compliance with GDPR. This would mean including all of these requirements in the airline or MRO procedures.

A new way of looking at and managing pre-maintenance data Part 2

Every airline or aircraft operator needs maintenance data for their aircraft; however, when the data comes from different sources and is presented in different formats, this process becomes unnecessarily complicated. Steve Sayers, Director of Technical Publications, FLYdocs.

n part 1 of this article, we considered premaintenance data: what it is, how it’s used, and how it’s organized and categorized. We also looked at some of the problems of digitized maintenance data, the difficulties of having to use different systems to access/use pre-maintenance data supplied from the OEMs, and briefly suggested how that might be overcome using a digital document management solution. In this second part of the article, we’ll look more carefully into the problems of incompatibility between systems, where and how airlines and operators are already

managing that data, where and why they cannot do so and some ideas as to how this could be resolved.

THE OPPORTUNITY TO IMPROVE MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL OF PRE-MAINTENANCE DATA

This is really about management and control of the data outside of the OEM’s environment, i.e. within the airline or operator’s location and systems.

However, there are different requirements with regards to how long data is held. A good example is from the operator’s point of view; in some situations, AIRCRAFT IT MRO • MAY-JUNE 2018 • 44

there is a regulatory requirement to keep 36 months of pre-maintenance data archived. This does not refer to post maintenance data; as stated previously, this has to be kept for the life of the aircraft.

For example, Boeing and Airbus operate different revision schedules. Boeing data is revised monthly and quarterly (depending on fleet type), and Airbus revise four times a year. This means airlines and operators are constantly managing new revisions of data and having to maintain extra IT capacity solely to archive all this data.

Some of the reasons for the 36-month archive are

set out below: • As part of the investigation process following an aircraft incident, the relevant AAIB (Air Accident Investigation Board) would need to review all maintenance work, servicing and repairs that have been carried out on the aircraft. This investigation could go back to the last heavy maintenance check that the aircraft underwent, which could have been 36 months prior (some aircraft undergo heavy maintenance checks every three years).

• Also, at the lease return of an aircraft, the airline or operator must be able to show the versions of certain manuals that were used to carry out specific maintenance tasks or servicing requirements. This is particularly relevant when reviewing the damage/repair status of the aircraft. In some circumstances, if a permanent repair has been applied to an aircraft, it stays for the life of the aircraft, so access to older versions of SRMs (Structural Repair Manuals) are required. These repairs could have been applied several years earlier to a much older version of SRM. • The OEMs can provide specific earlier revisions of requested data but at a cost to the airline. Therefore, the obligation is on the airline or operator to keep and manage their own archives.

Having all previous OEM versions of data (by fleet type) available and managed offline would make the returns process for airlines and operators, (particularly mixed fleet operations), much easier and reduce the costs and timelines of having to rely on the OEMs for support.

The data archive service is an opportunity that we are reviewing at FLYdocs and which could be offered as a subscription service offering in which: • The airline or operator subscribes to a full revision managed database of all relevant manuals — archived, managed and controlled offline by FLYdocs.

• Alternatively, the airline or operator has the ability to upload and manage their own database/archive within the FLYdocs system.

Both options could provide a relevant revision management process that would synchronize version uploads in-line with the OEMs revision schedules, auto archive the old revisions and, in turn, notify the users that new versions of data are available. Access to the old archived data would be controlled.

CURRENT BLOCKS TO OBTAINING, STORING AND USING PRE-MAINTENANCE DATA

The real block for any independent solution provider would be getting access to OEM data. It is, in one sense, understandable because the OEMs do not want their data to be available to companies or third parties who do not own or operate aircraft, lessors of course being the exception.

OEM data is only available through an annual subscription process and is a

Also, it is their proprietary data, i.e. it’s the OEM’s design data, which they understandably are not going to provide as a free of charge option and that they also take every precaution to safeguard.

Airlines and operators do have the ability to allocate ‘third party access’ to their pre-maintenance data through the OEM applications, as long as all parties have signed into the relevant third party data access contracts. These data access contracts provide ‘read only’ access, and any amendments and/or updates would have to be initiated by the pre-maintenance data owner.

DATA WOULD REQUIRE OR BRING ABOUT

Looking first at the OEM data; they have processes that airlines and operators have to follow, i.e. the specific platforms the data has to be accessed from and the actual data download/transfer processes. But looking at pre-maintenance data created in-house by the airlines and operators (see Part 1 of this article), there are opportunities. Again, I will refer to FLYdocs here as I am familiar with the embedded existing workflows and the data management processes within the system, and the way they work. The FLYdocs workflows could be used to cover the multiple processes required to enable airlines and operators to not only create and access their own data, but also potentially be used to view and access all pre-maintenance data (even OEM generated). This would be a real step forward.

The biggest opportunity and potentially the best area to start, would be the internal documentation that all airlines create. Nearly all internally created documentation has to pass through several phases of checking and authorization before final release. In some cases, this documentation is only required for a specific amount of time, i.e. has to be reviewed within a certain time frame from the point of creation to see if it is still relevant and/or current.

The time intervals for reviewing can be internally set.

In most cases the process of creating, reviewing and authorizing, as well as the further requirement of a date review for relevance and effectiveness, is probably handled through multiple systems or databases and can be very time consuming. There will always be a requirement for this type of temporary documentation, whether it is tackling an airline/operator requirement or if it is addressing errors or ambiguity within OEM created manuals or documents. An example could be a missing or incorrect step within an AMM (Aircraft Maintenance Manual) maintenance procedure. Even though the OEMs test and prove their documentation, there are still occurrences of the above situation arising. In this case the airline would raise a Tech Request or a Service Request with the relevant OEM, which, if agreed, might result in a manual change at some point in the future. Typically changes like these can take six to nine months or longer to be fully implemented into the pre-maintenance data sets. In the meantime, the airline or operator issues a document often called a TB (Technical Bulletin or Temporary Bulletin) under their Part 21 approval, which allows them to create this type of document to provide engineers with the relevant information until the OEM update is available.

while for the technology to catch up but now there is an opportunity to give people the data they want at the point where they want it; an ethos that drives and motivate us at FLYdocs.

controlled through the workflow processes that are currently within systems like FLYdocs, for instance, where automation and robust workflows could remove the requirement for multiple other systems.

CONCLUSION

Although OEMs work to the relevant ATA chapters and principles, e.g. S1000D authoring standards, they present this information in different formats and in different ways. To be able to display and access numerous documents in a standardized format and having hyperlinks from the premaintenance to the post maintenance (relevant records) would be of real benefit; a benefit that

modern digital documentation systems can provide.

For multi-fleet airlines and operators, (which most of them are today), it is frustrating having to ‘dip’ in and out of different OEM systems and databases that present and format the same data in different ways.

The digital age and the use of digital data and documentation has provided the aviation industry with opportunities that only a few years ago were not achievable. Now, as mobile technology becomes something we use every day, new opportunities arise. It’s a very exciting time to be involved in the industry as there’s currently no end in sight to where the digital story will go, or to what is going to happen next. In the past, it’s sometimes taken a
