here is an old saying that goes, ‘if it’s not broken, don’t fix it’. It means that we should not undertake unnecessary changes but, put bluntly, it is often used as an excuse for why things should not change at all. In that sense, it’s a saying that is not fit for the modern world of MRO IT. Waiting for something to break or, more often, stop functioning as it should, will usually mean an interruption to service and a nonscheduled maintenance event that could have been avoided if upgrades had been planned with current and future needs in mind. Digital data solutions help minimize the occasions when something has broken during its working schedule. After a couple of years of enforced low levels of activity, the aircraft MRO sector is not just waking up from the COVID effect but is undertaking a lot of upgrades that will serve it well in the years to come. The sector certainly cannot be accused of waiting until something breaks before acting.

COVID has left a challenge for MROs to eliminate touch points and equip staff to spend more time with the aircraft and less time walking to and from stores or walking to a terminal booth in order to enter the relevant information about what they have done to an aircraft, with the potential for errors and typos that entails. Paperless and mobile solutions save time and improve accuracy.

In this issue, you’ll find three great case studies.

HAECO knew that a better MRO IT solution was needed but, being a busy operation, had to choose

carefully. This case study charts the selection and implementation of their new solution as well as how it has bedded in. From AISG, we hear how a complex and multi-location MRO serving many airlines’ line maintenance needs for a range of aircraft types, found and implemented a new MRO IT solution. We don’t often hear from OEMs but our case study from ATR offers a really interesting and different story of why an OEM needed an MRO IT solution, and the journey to a modern solution during the pandemic.

The white paper in this issue is from Cranfield University and addresses the use of data and software as tools to increase operational performance and in delivering on sustainability goals.

We also have two columns in this issue. ‘How I see IT’ offers informed thoughts on how to decide which software solution you should choose in order to ensure that the chosen solution is well-matched to your business. In the first outing for our new occasional column, ‘What IT can do’, you can read about making the best use of data and where to start, plus the benefits, challenges and solutions for using data.

Arajet Airline to fly with TRAX eMRO Despite the ongoing Covid pandemic worldwide, startup airlines continue to launch.

Dominican Republic aviation regulatory authorities (JAC) announced in late February 2022 that they have recently approved 30 routes for the newly rebranded Arajet Airline, formerly Flycana, as the country’s first ultra-low-cost carrier. Arajet will operate scheduled and non-scheduled passenger and cargo service with a fleet of five Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The company has already taken delivery and released a photo of its first B737 which displays a colorful and distinctive livery. The aircraft was named Pico Duarte after the country’s highest mountain and nature reserve.

Arajet is set to begin operations at its hub based at the Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) in Santo Domingo, the second busiest airport in the Dominican Republic. Routes will include international flights to the United States, Cuba, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Netherlands (Netherlands Antilles), and France (French Caribbean Antilles).

The airline has inked a deal with TRAX to implement the web-based eMRO system to manage maintenance activities on its Boeing fleet of aircraft.

Demand for Web Manuals’ digitalization tool up 40% in Africa

Vega Offshore utilizes Rusada’s ENVISION

At the start of November 2021, Web Manuals, an established leader in digital documentation for the aviation industry, was pleased to announce that it is continuing to expand its global presence with a 40% increase in its customer base across Africa since January 2021.

Representative of a wide cross-section of the industry, 43% of the African organizations joining Web Manuals’ community are airlines, closely followed by operators of business jets and missions, and then flight schools. This clearly demonstrates the breadth of applications for the Web Manuals’ document digitalization tool as well as highlighting the continent’s appetite for digital transformation.

Romanian Oil & Gas operator Vega Offshore announced in early March 2022 that it has chosen Rusada’s ENVISION software to manage its airworthiness and maintenance operations, and is now fully live on the system.

Vega Offshore uses a fleet of Airbus Helicopters H155s to provide services to the offshore Oil & Gas industry. It operates passenger and cargo flights for producers, as well as medevac and search & rescue services if the need arises.

Vega Offshore will use ENVISION to manage a number of different functions, including continuing airworthiness, maintenance planning & tracking, and inventory management.

Rusada’s European Client Services team completed the project over the course of six months, during which time they configured process flows, trained staff, and migrated over Vega’s existing data. As a result, the operator is now up and running on ENVISION and is successfully using it for day-to-day operations.

In early November 2021, the Latin American-based low-cost carrier chose IFS to support its growing MRO footprint including engineering, planning, execution, and materials.

The IFS solution is to be deployed in the cloud and rolled out across the growing Viva Air fleet of 21 aircraft to support the airline’s ambitious expansion plans IFS, the global cloud enterprise applications company, announced that Viva Air has selected IFS to support its Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) and fleet planning operations.

Over the last decade Viva Air has grown rapidly across Latin America and now serves 20+ routes within Colombia and Peru, as well as international routes to Mexico and a growing number of daily flights to the US. The company has a vision to establish itself as the leading low-cost airline in Latin America, with planned international expansion into Brazil, Argentina, Chile and more countries in the region. The airline currently operates 21 Airbus A320-200 and A320neo aircraft, with fleet size expected to more than double over the next five years.

Chrono Aviation goes live with Rusada’s ENVISION Chrono Aviation, the Canadian charter airline, announced in midNovember 2021 that it has successfully deployed Rusada’s ENVISION as its airworthiness and maintenance solution.

Chrono Aviation provides charter services from its bases in Montreal, Quebec City, and Rimouski to destinations across Canada and the US. After nine years in operation, they now have a fleet of 14 aircraft ranging from Pilatus PC-12’s to Boeing 737’s.

Chrono will also soon be adding a 737-800 to the fleet, its largest aircraft to date.

Chrono performs most of its maintenance in-house through subsidiary WAAS Aerospace, which also conducts extensive third-party work. The company is currently constructing a new 66,000 sq. ft hangar at Montreal Saint-Hubert Longueuil Airport to accommodate recent growth.

Rusada worked closely with the teams at Chrono and WAAS throughout the deployment project to ensure a successful go live on eight of ENVISION’s modules. Chrono will use its Fleet Management module for continuing airworthiness and maintenance planning, Base, Line & Component Maintenance modules for MRO execution, and Inventory Management for its warehouses. It will also use ENVISION’s Human Resources, Quality & Safety, and

Finance & Accounting modules to support these functions.

The operator becomes Rusada’s first customer in Canada. The project sponsor, Dominic Cayouette, PRM/ DOM at WAAS Aerospace commented: “We have experienced significant levels of growth over the last five years and as such needed to upgrade our maintenance information system to manage our larger fleet and increased MRO activities. TrustFlight, Boeing, Canadian Tech Supercluster project A unique collaboration between TrustFlight, Boeing, RaceRocks and The University of British Columbia (UBC) has plans to transform the aviation industry, creating a new digital aircraft records platform aimed at significantly improving efficiency and potentially saving the sector up to $3.5 billion a year.

The DARS project, announced in mid-November 2021, aims to create the world’s first truly global, web-based component and airworthiness records platform to connect data across the supply chain, significantly improving efficiency and potentially delivering $3.5 billion a year in cost savings.

The Digital Aircraft Record System (DARS) will be developed in Canada, having received investment and support from the Canadian Digital Technology Supercluster — an initiative that helps to establish a framework for collaboration and co-investment on projects across all sectors. This project demonstrates

how innovation and creativity in the aerospace industry can help to drive Canada’s position as one of the top aviation economies in the world.

The long-term aim of the project is to create the world’s first truly global, web-based component and airworthiness records platform connecting data across the supply chain. Working closely with existing industry maintenance and MRO system providers, DARS will enhance their functionality by enabling seamless transfer of accurate aircraft information, removing the need for manual data entry and delivering significant efficiency improvements. The first DARS service to be offered will be a digital engine log, available in early 2022.

UBC’s combined research expertise in blockchain — a key technology within the DARS architecture — and supply chain management was a vital addition to the consortium.

In late November 2021, Affinity Flying Training Services, a key partner of the UK Military Flying Training System (UKMFTS), announced that it has gone live with Rusada’s web-based maintenance solution ENVISION. Affinity supports the fixed-wing element of UKMFTS for elementary flight training, basic flying tasks, and multi-engine training using a fleet of 42 aircraft including Grob 120 TPs, Beechcraft T6s and Embraer Phenom 100s.

Holding Part 145 and Part M certifications, Affinity manages and maintains the aircraft at RAF Barkston Heath, RAF Cranwell and RAF Valley, enabling some 21,000 hours of training per year for trainee service personnel.

Rusada’s platform was selected in 2019 and following a phased implementation process Affinity is now fully up and running on the system. They are using five of ENVISION’s modules, including Fleet Management, Base Maintenance, and Inventory Management, to manage their complex airworthiness and maintenance activities.

In early December 2021, ASQS announced a collaboration with the Swedish air ambulance organization Kommunalförbundet Svenskt Ambulansflyg (KSA).

The newly established alliance, Swedish Air Ambulance, is an association of the 21 Swedish provinces with the aim of providing equal access to quality healthcare for the Swedish population.

“By deciding to work with our integrated Safety and Quality Management System IQSMS, KSA will be taking a systematic approach to risk and safety from day one of operations. The possibility to centrally manage safety, risk and compliance management data with a single integrated tool was a contributing factor in KSA’s decision to implement IQSMS” said Lourdes Cervantes, Project Manager at ASQS A soft-operational start in November 2021 at Umeå Airport in northern Sweden, where the office and

Web Manuals doubles UAV customer base In mid-November 2021, Web Manuals, a global leader in digital documentation for aviation, announced that it has seen a doubling of its unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and drone customer base since the start of 2021.

The rise is largely due to the worldwide growth of the drone industry resulting from advances in technology and increased demand for drone deliveries. Web Manuals’ new customers include electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft developers, drone logistics services, and training centers, across North America and Europe.

Nick Karagiannis, sales executive and drone expert at Web Manuals said, “Many operators — especially the pioneers of advanced drone operations — are developing processes to prove safety. Although the majority of these companies already believe in digitized processes, they often don’t realize the complexity of flight manuals. As a result, we have also seen drone consultancy services join Web Manuals to prepare for the expected future demand of drone manuals and manual expertise.”

The UAV and drone operators use Web Manuals to manage the digital authoring, editing and distribution of all their regulatory and compliance documentation. In the US, drone users need Part 135 Air Carrier compliance and beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) certification, as required by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. In Europe, the European Union Safety Agency

(EASA) has released a regulatory framework requiring all drone operators to register within the ‘open’, ‘specific’ or ‘certified’ category by the end of 2021.

ADSoftware and DCI Defense Group successfully complete AIRPACK installation for the Qatar Air Academy The collaboration with the French Defense subsidiary DCI Group, announced in late January 2022, strengthens ADSoftware’s presence in the military industry, allowing the CAMO/MRO software specialist to showcase its excellence in data migration and protection.

In October 2020, ADSoftware started collaborating with DCI Defense Group, the reference operator of the French Ministry of Defense for the international transfer of French military know-how, in its deployment in Qatar to support the operations of the local Air Academy. This contract represents a major step forward for ADSoftware in both the military industry and the Middle East, growing the shares of its Defense portfolio from 8% in 2019 to 40% in 2022.

The Qatar Air Academy was established in 2011 to train airplane and helicopter pilots for the local forces.

Qatar had also ordered 16 singleengine Airbus H125 helicopters, for the use of the Armed Forces Air Academy.

To date, 49 trainees have been trained, including three classes of helicopter pilots and one class of aircraft pilots.

Norse Atlantic Airways takes off with AMOS After a five-month selection process, Norse Atlantic Airways, a new low-fare long-haul airline based in Norway, decided on AMOS in autumn 2021. The evaluation of a maintenance and engineering software was part of Norse’s business fundamentals and they started their discussions with Swiss-AS very early in their start-up phase, putting their confidence and trust in Swiss-AS that AMOS will support them in getting their brand-new airline off the ground The very lean project is already well underway and the Swiss-AS project team is assisting Norse in setting up their processes. The aim is to adopt what has emerged as ‘best practice’ as a result of the experience of more than 190 preceding successful AMOS implementations. The Swiss-AS project team is now pressing ahead to complete the data transfer for Norse. Norse Atlantic Airways’ goal is to manage a single-type fleet of all B787 aircraft in AMOS. The go-live –will include the full range of AMOS Airline modules and will enable Norse to exploit the

Rusada releases new Flights app for ENVISION At the beginning of February 2022, Rusada, the global aviation software provider, revealed a new mobile application for its Airworthiness, MRO, and Flight Operations solution ENVISION. ENVISION Flights has been designed specifically for pilots and other members of the flight crew. Several key actions can also be carried out directly from the cockpit. ENVISION Flights becomes the third new app released by Rusada in the last 10 months after ENVISION Tasks and ENVISION Stock were launched in 2021, highlighting the company’s current focus on mobility. The fully native app is available on iOS and Android devices and is approved by both Apple and Google.

HAECO Hong Kong was clear about its needs. We wanted an end-to-end solution with a user-friendly interface. Following several rounds of workshops with Swiss-AS, we concluded that AMOS offered a comprehensive range and practical basic functions for the end-to-end MRO process and comes with a user-friendly user interface. As a service provider, Swiss-AS was responsive to our requests and queries during the Request for Proposal (RFP) stage. They also set out a structured roadmap for future development of functions, which we valued.

AMOS originally stood for Airline Maintenance & Operational Systems when it started off as a purely airline operational system back in 1989. The launch of its AMOS MRO Edition in 2017 covered new features developed specifically for MRO processes. The airline-related functions are quite mature while the MRO functions allow for future improvements and fine tunings for HAECO Hong Kong.

With an IT solution being a key component of any business infrastructure for many years, even decades to come, selecting the right product and efficient implementation are critical to ensure that the business gains the optimum value from the new software.

Selection process

The selection process at HAECO Hong Kong started from identifying active MRO solutions in the market through a touch-base workshop to better understand the products on offer. We then shortlisted the service providers who met our requirements and invited them to exploration workshops to get deeper insights into each potential solution. At the next stage, we narrowed the field down to three solutions with whom we initiated formal RFP processes. Workshop invitations were extended to them, enabling us to further drill into the major functions that the solutions could provide with on-site demos. Out of this thorough process, Swiss-AS AMOS emerged as the best fit with HAECO Hong Kong’s needs and culture.

Implementation

Overall, the implementation was a 30-month project overseen and driven by a dedicated project team called smartHAECO formed in April 2019. High calibre employees across departments in HAECO Hong Kong were picked to work on the AMOS implementation. From an initial size of 15 full-time members, the team grew to 25 core members, along with support from more than 80 Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). smartHAECO gained high engagement and support from the HAECO leadership team throughout the project cycle from study to implementation. The project team reported directly to the Director and General Manager of HAECO Hong Kong.

The first and definition stage ran from April to December 2019, with four key steps to be

accomplished. We had to learn how to use the system, review and define its business process, identify any gaps between AMOS functions and our business as well as HAECO Hong Kong’s requirements, and then define the IT infrastructure with the different subsystems.

The second stage was the actual implementation.

Between January 2020 and June 2021, four User Acceptance Test (UAT) cycles and Final Acceptance Test (FAT) were carried out. During this time, testing and validation of additionally developed MRO features was also conducted. Training took place from January to September 2021 with AMOS leading key users training and train-the-trainer sessions, followed by end-users training. Right from the start of the program in April 2019, we planned for an exhaustive Data Migration and ran nine cycles throughout the project.

members, to ensure they understood the major modules in AMOS during the early project phase. In the train-the-trainer session, key users conducted training for the SMEs as they would be involved in UATs as well as training the end users in their own departments. Finally, end user training was conducted around four months before AMOS went live at HAECO Hong Kong. It consisted of classroom training with practical exercises.

USER FEEDBACK

It is understandably challenging for employees to adapt to a project that involves big changes. The resistance was also heightened given that HAECO’s legacy system had been tailored to internal processes and employee requests. As AMOS is an integrated system, the linkage between modules could be seen as complex.

However, with adequate training and refresher courses planned and delivered during the project implementation phase, users are now well adapted to the system.

REGULATORY MATTERS COVID-19 IMPACT

While the pandemic has severely affected the airline industry, there was no significant impact on this project. Work from home arrangements did result in some inconvenience while trying to arrange and carry out UAT test cases but the smartHAECO team quickly adapted to the new work norm with online conferences and tools. Overall, the impact was manageable, and the project timeline was kept on track.

OTHER CHALLENGES

Coordination between different departments could be challenging, especially during the Final Acceptance Test stage where we had to mimic the whole end-to-end process from quotation, planning and executing to invoicing. Given the involvement from multiple departments and numerous stakeholders, the coordination on how to ensure a smooth and on-time testing was quite daunting.

On a positive note, HAECO project leaders and key users invested great efforts in advocating the need for process and system changes to the business units via strong governance. This created a good awareness in the organization to collectively pursue the goals and benefits of this project.

TRAINING AND DELIVERY

Training was carried out in three broad phases: key users training, train-thetrainer session and end-users training. Key users training was conducted by Swiss-AS to provide an overview of the system functions to the project team

Regulatory approval applications are not processed with AMOS. Regulatory approval applications vary between authorities. Submission of supporting documents may have to be submitted by mail, in electronic format by email or uploaded via the respective authority’s portal. Automated processes do not easily suit the purpose.

LESSONS LEARNED

While we have achieved the deliverables, there is always room for improvement.

For this project, we had put too much attention on the actual functionalities of AMOS and limited ourselves to addressing the issues. If more focus and resources had been put into change management and advocating the opportunities that the system had to offer, it may have helped to shift our staff’s perception and enable them to be more receptive to adopting AMOS.

ADVICE WHEN CONSIDERING A NEW MRO SOLUTION

If your business is contemplating a change like the one HAECO Hong Kong undertook, you need to decide if you want a whole new system to cater to end-to-end MRO functions or just an add-on MRO solution to your existing system. For the latter, it is key that your current and potential solution are compatible or integration would pose challenges.

BENEFITS FROM IMPLEMENTING AMOS

Given that we are still in the stabilisation phase, more change requests from AMOS are expected in the coming version. A benefit that we have observed so far is the digitalized exchange of work packages in structured data language (XML).

Our needs and reasons for change were well addressed. AMOS provided HAECO Hong Kong with the end-to-end solution that we were looking for, even though a lot of enhancement work is still in progress. AMOS has been and continues to be very responsive to our change requests, addressing them with utmost professionalism, and with plans for future development.

NEXT STEPS

We will be upgrading to the latest version of AMOS in August this year and also kick starting the AMOSmobile study with our operations team. Our target is to implement AMOSmobile by the end of 2022 so that staff can work more efficiently with mobile devices.

CONCLUSION

The dedication from the project team members is highly admirable. Most importantly, the strong leadership and direction from the steering committees were crucial in keeping the project well on track and ensuring its success.

Neil Hargreaves shares the customer relationship ethos of listening and the focus on first class software that have been the key to Rusada’s success Neil has spent over a decade as part of the Rusada team, having joined from former UK airline Thomas Cook. He spent much of his earlier tenure managing the company’s Client Services teams, and his role has expanded over the years to incorporate the functions of IT, Customer Support, and Product Development.

Aircraft IT: Your name, your job title, and the name of the business?

Neil Hargreaves: Neil Hargreaves, Chief Operating Officer at Rusada Aircraft IT: How did Rusada get started?

NH: Rusada began its journey over 30 years ago as Russell Adams, an aviation and MRO consultancy business. After successfully developing our first software solution in 1987, we set the standard in the market releasing the first version of our ENVISION software solution in 1993. Today, with over 150 staff in offices around the world, our software is used to manage 2,000 fixed and rotary wing aircraft.

Aircraft IT: What is the guiding business principle that drives Rusada?

NH: Our guiding business principle is to understand our customers and ensure we maintain progressive, positive relationships. We acknowledge that our customers are fundamental to our growth, as are we to theirs, so we aim to deliver the highest level of customer service at all times.

Aircraft IT: What has Rusada’s greatest business achievement been to date, and why?

NH: The fantastic team that we have put together over the years is the greatest achievement in my opinion. Establishing a team of colleagues who you

can rely on, who go the extra mile, have a passion for the service we offer and an interest in our customers is vital to our success. support we can, assisting colleagues and customers who have been affected. From an industry point of view, aviation was one of the sectors that was hardest hit, which has resulted in everyone working together to support one-another, but sometimes leading to extremely disappointing conclusions with some airlines unable to stay afloat. If these last few years have taught me anything, it is that close, connected workforces, and open and supportive supplier/customer relationships are key to helping overcome the challenges of life, and business.

Aircraft IT: In a sentence, how would you summarize what Rusada does for aircraft maintenance customers?

NH: We listen, collate and understand what our customers’ pain points are, which consequentially allows us to offer a premium, integrated solution, expertly implemented by our aviation specialists.

Aircraft IT: What do you feel will be the next big thing in maintenance Aviation IT? NH: Native app solutions are in full force, and Rusada is leading the way with offering flexibility, portability

and rich functionality. This area of maintenance aviation IT systems will continue to grow over the coming months and years. Further ahead, the use of AI (Artificial Intelligence) for predictive and prescriptive maintenance is something we’re very excited about and could prove transformational for the industry. So, there’s lots to look forward to.

Aircraft IT: What do you want your customers to say about Rusada?

NH: I hope that they would say, ‘The Rusada team really understand how we tick’. We spend as much time as we can learning about our customers’ processes and challenges, to then turn that insight into useful functionality. But, as I mentioned before, this is only possible because of the close, collaborative relationships we create and foster with them and that comes from our staff.

ATR steps-up to a modern MRO IT solution

I

t’s always good to be able to share, with colleagues, information about common workplace issues. In that spirit this article will endeavor to share with readers how ATR came to decide on the need for a new MRO software solution, how we selected the right partner for our business, the implementation and what ATR has gained from the new solution. But first, let me tell you something about ATR, the business whose experience forms the basis for this white paper.

ATR

ATR, is not only a renowned aircraft manufacturer serving roughly 200 operators worldwide, but is also a major support and service provider. The range of services covers spares and tools, either on a spot basis or under a PBH (power by the hour) scheme, retrofit solutions, extended training services and

airframe maintenance and CAMO services on a worldwide basis. To support our airframe maintenance, which is also called Working Party and CAMO services, ATR has run its own maintenance facility in Toulouse area since June 2017 under a very standard MRO model.

As both a manufacturer and an MRO for ATR aircraft we deal mainly with damaged aircraft needing major repairs and we have highly skilled structural engineers interfacing with the entire ATR eco system e.g Engineering, Quality, Airworthiness, Supply Chain; this is the core activity.

But there are some customers who prefer their ATR aircraft maintenance to by carried out by ATR, including scheduled maintenance and SB (Service Bulletin) and STC (Supplemental Type Certificate) related work. The split is something like 80% major repairs with 20% of standard or scheduled maintenance.

THE SELECTION PROCESS

Through the RFP period, not only the features proposed by the MIS, overall architecture and pricing conditions and model were evaluated but also that the potential supplier should understand the customer’s mindset and had the ability to properly understand our planning and resources constraints. Whereas several suppliers proposed a heavy, long and costly project management approach, ADSoftware offered a very agile service and proposed workshops based on real data upload and real case studies to evaluate the package. This was successfully conducted in a couple of days based on a set of data (XLS spreadsheets) provided by ATR. The cost of the overall package (license, training, data upload, features enhancement) was also an obvious contributor to the final decision to go with ADSoftware.

IMPLEMENTATION THE CHALLENGES

The first thing to consider with any change such as this one is to ask why do it and, in that context, there were a number of issues in the business that led us to decide that ATR needed to investigate a new MRO Solution?

To support the ATR Working Party organization, which activity has been steadily growing during the last few years, and to build a robust CAMO department, formally established in 2017, a transformation plan was launched few years back.

The transformation was contemplating an extended training plan for the team, significant industrial investments, and IT tools deployment. The purpose of this last step was to strengthen our processes and information approach while standardizing flows of information, sharing and securing data. As a significant portion of the team had already run some MIS (Maintenance Information System) in the companies they were previously working for, an IT mindset was already in place.

ATR then launched a formal RFP (Request for Proposal) to evaluate and qualify different MIS solutions with very stringent requirements about 24/7 availability, full Web compatible architecture, and ease of training and deployment, as well as data upload capabilities on top of standard features.

The RFP specified some features, architecture (Web was a must have), and the agility to run workshops as well as data upload, a case study and training.

Deployment planning was proposed and shared with ADSoftware to organize the required training plan. The plan agreed was made up of theoretical training sessions, data uploads (which were qualified) and then a switch to a run mode with on-site assistance from the ADSoftware team.

The full solution, meaning all modules, has been contracted and deployed throughout the project lifecycle. We started with the ‘easy piece’ which was the set-up of a dedicated tools inventory, including life limit control and standard procurement / material management features. Then training for our Planning and Production department started to secure good preparation and management of complex work packages. As our core activity is to repair heavily damaged aircraft, we can easily manage complex work packages including more than several hundred tasks.

Once the ‘core’ functions were deployed within the organization, we moved several steps forwards through different internal projects, supported by ADSoftware. This included deployment of the production module, to secure technical staff technical licenses and training management alongside assignment of our workforce to maintenance tasks (work orders) and recording of production

time. Based on that, at least a weekly update is shared with our customers when their aircraft are undergoing repairs. The production module is also strengthened by the integration of ATR’s Quality Department which is responsible for technical staff licenses management and renewal, including for our few sub-contractors.

In addition, the MIS is also deployed within our CAMO organization. Specific developments have been made to ease the upload of information and data processed when ATR CAMO is doing an aircraft recovery or airworthiness review so that aircraft and component configuration, maintenance program, SB & AD will soon be managed in a more business-like manner.

On top of that, and as ATR also leases or sells what we call ME or Main Elements (engines, propellers, landing gear…), the airworthiness of these ME which are located in our different warehouses (Paris, Singapore, Miami) is currently supported by ADSoftware MIS in full integration with ATR’s Spares and Supply chain department.

The next step, that we are just starting, is to track our costs on three axes (production, spares and services) to ensure a proper cost control of any project and then compare that to our initial commercial proposal and business case.

THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON THE PROJECT

From an ATR perspective, almost no impact from COVID as the core modules were already deployed and support was still available. ADsoftware was sometimes struggling with a few colleagues working from home, so some minor developments were delivered a little bit late, but nothing major nor impacting our activity.

OTHER AND MORE ROUTINE CHALLENGES

Having the whole team engaged with such a major project is key and this was quite easy at ATR as most of our colleagues already had some experience on different MIS. Then, ensuring a proper communication and understanding between ADSoftware and ATR could have been a challenge but we realized that you must make sure that each listens to the other and understands the challenges and projects to be achieved. So far overall cooperation is good.

TRAINING AND USER ACCEPTANCE

Training was organized per service starting with data upload or initialization when required. Theoretical training was then performed on a test database fed with real data. Once the team had been trained, the switch over to the production database was made, what we called a run mode, with an ADSoftware trainer on site to secure a very smooth transition.

As Airpack (the name of the MIS) is very close to other major MIS in terms of terminology and architecture, deployment was not difficult. Transition to a full new web interface definitively improved the overall perception and user-friendliness of the entire solution. All the modules in Airpack can be seen in figure 1

Overall, the reaction of users was good with some specific attention to the deployment of the production module. It is no secret than setting up a major and integrated IT solution brings some constraints and forces you to potentially rethink your processes and some priorities but we did not face major challenges there. When the production module was deployed not only in our hangar but also on remote sites, our colleagues made some comments and recommendations to improve some transactions. This was translated into a document shared with ADSoftware and a new version was deployed encompassing these Figure 1 improvements.

ATR is still working closely with ADSoftware and, when there is the requirement for a new feature or an improvement to, say, the back-end, we are very quick to share that with ADSoftware and, if it is something that is chargeable, we might pay for it but, if not, it will be part of the IT life cycle plan; either way, ADSoftware is quick to provide updated solutions and versions. They are very agile in their reactions and that speed has a value of its own.

REGULATORY APPROVALS

Regulators were informed about the integration of our new MIS and recognized it as a source of major improvements. ATR being not only an OEM working under EASA approval but also with different foreign Authorities, we are very frequently audited and our OSAC (Organisme pour la Securite de l’Aviation Civile), the arm of the French regulatory body, mentioned our MIS as a very reliable and structural pillar in our maintenance organization.

The MIS was evaluated, from an architecture perspective, and qualified by our IT department. It was a requirement for us that MIS should be able to be run on any PC with absolutely no impact on stringent software configuration and IT safety rules, especially in our FAL (Final Assembly Line) hosted by Airbus and where ATR aircraft are manufactured. This was a seamless approval.

For ATR, there was really no need to have a consultant on site during six months to supervise our organization, processes and data or to define an action plan. As we are a small but very agile MRO and CAMO organization, this was done internally by very key and committed people with very high skills.

So, what have been our take-aways from the whole process at ATR? Maybe to take more time to think about the impact on internal processes. Also, a deeper evaluation of the users’ manuals (see below) and standard operating procedures is something which is worth evaluating as this supports good training, deployment and transfer of know-how between the MIS editor and the Customer.

But, overall, for both ATR and ADSoftware, I don’t think that we made any big mistakes neither did we face any major challenges when deploying the solution whether that was related to data qualification and upload or to the initial curriculum training plan so I doubt we would change much at all if we had to do it again: what we did was quite efficient.

Maybe we should have given more thought to the quality of the users’ manual which could be improved. Because we had to take some time to re-define some standard internal operating procedures, where we were expecting to have state-ofthe art users’ manuals. This is something that we should evaluate if we had to do it again and on which we should have spent more time.

If we were to offer any advice to another MRO considering a similar

When a business deploys a major IT solution like an MRO information system, it’s really all about standardization of processes, methodology and data. The issue that we had before deploying this solution at ATR was that we were using very standard Excel spreadsheets that had been developed, run and customized by many different colleagues on different PCs: hence there was absolutely no integration of any kind of data as a result of which, it was not possible to share, say, a return on experience of data. That resulted in a loss of energy and a loss of value for the organization. It’s about making sure that everyone is sharing the same and qualified information using IT solutions and data and that everybody is going to run the application under the same standards, meaning that, at the end, there are standard processes throughout the organization. That, along with standard and secured data, is a key benefit of having these sorts of IT solutions in place. Definitively this is all about the standardization of process, methodology and secured data to avoid each individual having their own set of data and, potentially, method of work.

Having been running the new solution for two and half to three years now, where we are is very close to the plan that we made in terms of standard processes, organization and securing data; and the team has been positive about the deployment of this kind of solution. Also, thinking about the people who are fixing the aircraft, their job is to repair aircraft and undertake maintenance and not to be typing on keyboards. But actually, the way the solution is designed and the way we have organized the set-up of the ADSoftware solution in ATR is that most of the production people are, in the end, entering very few data on the MIS; so, as much as possible, we are recording real-time data when it comes to production. However, there are back-office people re-typing some data which we are manually inputting on work orders for example.

NEXT STEPS AND FUTURE PLANS

ATR has acquired the eDamage module that will be used by our Part 145, CAMO, Working Party representative and our colleagues in the FAL (Final Assembly Line). The purpose is to track from the very early stage any dent and buckle and trigger proper maintenance actions in a full end to end approach. eDamage enables engineers to use tablets to record remotely from close to or even on board the aircraft, minor damages, dent and buckle (figure 2), which are sent electronically to the back office of the engineering department. Then, from Toulouse, we can assess what is the extent of the damage on the airframe, and provide some repair solutions direct from the ATR head office.

This module will not only be used in Airframe & MRO Services to address major aircraft repairs but is also going to be deployed in the final assembly line for new aircraft. On new aircraft the dents and buckles are minor but they do happen and that is something that ATR needs to address to ensure that new aircraft delivered are one hundred percent perfect.

Also, we have started a small project team deploying a cost monitoring module (figure 3) because, the bottom line is that we are selling services so must be able to identify some benefit from that. Cost control is a key activity.

SUMMARY

The project was well managed by both parties, ATR and ADSoftware. It’s good that we are interacting more like partners, meaning that when, for instance, there are new features to be developed, at ATR, we are proactively proposing new developments which are shared with the user community. It means that we contribute to the ongoing evolution and improvement of the global solution.

That is something that we were expecting from the ATR perspective but which is sometimes quite difficult to do with larger MIS editors because they have their own development plan which making it sometimes quite difficult to interact with that plan and to be part of it.

PATRICK MASSICOT Once everything has been set up in terms of supply chain, material management and production, the next consideration is the dollars or euros for which cost control is a key step that has to be addressed and tackled. So, that is what is currently being done and for which we have received a new cost control module which, at the time of writing, was being evaluated not only within the MRO Figure 3 organization but also in cooperation with the finance department. One of the main intended outcomes is to have financial reports and we have to be sure that those financial reports are providing accurate, readable and understandable data.

ATR is both an MRO and an OEM but the primary activity is to design and build aircraft. So, when we are proposing and implementing these types of solutions, we have to take into account different parts of the organization such as Quality and MRO Production, which means it will probably take a few months to deploy everything, to buy equipment such as iPads, and to define all the parameters and technical information that we want to track and manage. It’s not a long-term but is a medium-term project which will take something like six months.

Patrick is a graduate aeronautical engineer with a more than 30 years’ experience in aviation and aircraft maintenance and operations, and more than two decades working with MRO, lessors, regulatory bodies, civilian and military operators, flying fixed and rotary wing aircraft. He gained a thorough knowledge of Maintenance Information Systems, as the Head of Sales & Marketing for a major supplier before joining ATR. Patrick now leads the Airframe & MRO Services business unit at ATR providing maintenance and CAMO support, and services to ATR’s internal and external customers worldwide.

Upgrading IT — Which software solution approach should you choose?

s airlines and MROs eye digital transformation, IT leaders are inundated with options for software platforms. With varying missions and distinct structures, the decision to implement a certain platform depends on each organization’s unique mission.

Success depends on an IT leader’s ability to understand their organization’s unique technological capabilities and determine which features and use-cases are best-suited for a specific project.

Choosing the optimal software platform, as well as strategically choosing the right innovation partner, is one of the key steps to fruitful modernization, allowing leaders to properly address long-term needs and future-proof pivotal infrastructure.

Low-code/no-code platforms, open-source software, and proprietary software are a few options that IT leaders have when it comes to delivering software applications. While it’s nearly impossible to compare platforms with such different capabilities,

understanding the high-level benefits and drawbacks can help IT leaders make an informed decision on what’s best for their organization. Each technology option has more nuanced details but learning the basics about these software options can help organizations operate stronger.

Further, by working with a technology partner who’s experienced in implementing these platforms, organizations can be prepared to enact the best solution for their digital transformation goals.

systems are user-friendly and agile. Because of their simplicity to build, these platforms cannot be extensively customized. An example of common business practices that low-code would be useful for is handling HR onboarding, because the systems can be applied universally to any organization.

Given that these platforms are easy to use, barriers to programming are lower for anyone on staff. In turn, more senior developers can instead focus on more complex issues that require a deeper experience set.

Organizations can modify platforms built on open-source technology without too many constraints. Open source presents users with more white space for creation and modification. When working on a specific project, open-source software is beneficial due to its customizable and collaborative nature.

Furthermore, open-source platforms help keep budgets under control, as they don’t require big upfront costs. It may also serve as a ‘free trial’ before supplemental, paid features are added on.

Open source also allows for continuous improvements based on an organization’s evolving needs. These systems rely on peer review and community production for their use, which leads to higher quality. By choosing systems that are prepared

for changing demands, IT leaders can ensure they are able to remain agile, ultimately saving time and resources in the long run.

A PEEK INTO PROPRIETARY

On the flip side of open source, proprietary software is licensed and managed by an organization or individual, with its source code kept private.

Proprietary software does not allow modification of the source code like open-source software does.

However, proprietary software vendors often enable the ability to customize features to meet specific business needs. This customization can be limiting and there can be roadblocks to accomplishing certain missions or added costs associated with the project.

Proprietary software can be implemented faster than open source, considering the code is already built for your needs. If you’re looking for a quick turnaround, proprietary software may be the best way to go. There’s also less need for internal talent to update the system, handle security, or enact feature enhancements. However, proprietary software can often be expensive due to licensing costs.

PUTTING A PLATFORM (OR TWO!) INTO ACTION

The reality of the digital transformation process is that organizations will often need to implement a combination of platforms to accomplish their goals.

Product teams should start with a keen focus on customer outcomes, including user experience, rather than becoming distracted by a plethora of potential features.

It’s key to offer product teams the autonomy to decide what they are looking for, but simultaneously provide safe guard rails, such as a common software delivery framework, to ensure they don’t drift too far.

Business practitioners’ knowledge coupled with the expertise of an innovation partner that understands the mission, practices, as well as platforms, allows for the most seamless process.

Since platforms aren’t one-size-fits-all, engaging

with an experienced innovation partner to advise and implement these technologies will ensure organizations accomplish their desired outcomes. A team consisting of key decision makers on the business side, internal IT leaders and external technology professionals is best equipped to implement a modernization strategy that is optimal for the organization’s needs.

For now, that’s how we see IT.

O

ver the last 20 years there has been a revolution in the use of digital technology in aircraft design, manufacturing, operation, and sustainment; commonly called ‘digital aviation’. We wanted to explore this phenomenon, where it has come from and where it might take us in the future.

AN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

In 1999, Boeing shared in AERO Magazine that the 253 million pages of paper manuals they produced each year, if all the pages were stacked one upon the other, would reach 20 miles (32 Km) up to the stratosphere. Aircraft OEMs had launched their web-based portals, and were investing to create new information delivery tools, both on-line and delivered via other digital media. For aviation, the impetus for the transition from paper to digital was strong, as the latest approved documentation was and is required to be available at all points of maintenance and flight operations. An enormous amount of work and resources were being used to keep paper documentation current at the many points of use.

The worldwide transition from paper to digital in aviation ground operations, was an early and important example of the industry innovating in a way that provided both significant operational efficiency and environmental benefits. In the case of the paper-to-digital shift, not only was the significant cost of printing, distributing, and maintaining paper and other physical media eliminated but, also, day-to-day operational efficiency was increased where engineers and mechanics could more readily have necessary documentation to hand with less time spent transiting around airports and hangars to source the approved documentation. A clear and quantifiable ‘economic’ benefit.

In addition, this shift provided a massive sustainability benefit. If we extrapolate from the 253 million pages, 20-mile-high stack of paper from Boeing alone in 1999, and account for market share and industry adoption rates, we can conservatively estimate that the paper-to-digital shift in commercial aviation alone has saved approximately 8.8 billion pages from being created and printed since the year 2000. That’s a notional stack of paper 1100 Km high. For perspective, that is nearly 15 times the altitude that Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos orbited the Earth on his July 20th, 2021 spaceflight. From a sustainability point of view, it has provided significant energy and emissions savings by eliminating the energy to manufacture that paper (~100 million kWh/53 million kilograms CO2) and global distribution of 40 million kilograms of paper, plus the consumption of nearly 10,000 hectares of forest, the latter helping to reduce the industry’s impact on biodiversity. This is an

early and well-known, but perhaps now taken-for-granted, example of the industry reaping significant economic benefits while providing significant environmental benefits through digitally focused investment and innovation.

SUSTAINABILITY AS AN INDUSTRY IMPERATIVE

Aerospace has always embraced innovation, with improvements that make aircraft safer and more reliable, and ever improving performance and efficiencies.

Since the dawn of the jet age commercial aircraft have become 70% more fuel efficient and noise has been reduced by 90%. Reducing fuel burn and emissions is in the DNA of Commercial Aviation. Modern wing and engine design, new materials such as carbon fiber, access to greater data volumes and new information processing methods support industry sustainability goals along with increased performance efficiency. Currently we are seeing a step increase in the focus on alternative propulsion and fuels driven by economic realities, and by the goals set out by governments and industry. ICAO, for example, has two major aspirational goals for international aviation: 2% annual fuel efficiency improvement through to 2050, and carbon neutral growth from 2020 onwards.

These are audacious goals which will require multiple tacks.

The ICAO Global Collation for Sustainable Aviation is tracking and driving several major related themes, including ‘Operations and Infrastructure’: ‘win-win’ developments, reducing costs along with emissions. The promise of digital operational efficiencies in this regard is not the largest, but it is one of the most immediately available to use. It is generally accepted that approximately 10% of the opportunity derives from optimization of operations. Case in point, the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG) in its ‘Waypoint 2050’ report estimates that 8-12% of CO2 reductions by 2050 will come from operations and infrastructure improvements. Boeing echoes this; Sheila Remes, Boeing Vice President of Environmental Sustainability, explained to us, “By flying more efficiently, we can collectively reduce aviation’s emissions by about 10%. Data is the key to efficiency.

By leveraging data, we can help our customers plan the most efficient route, optimize flight planning, provide real-time weather and traffic information to pilots and establish more direct routings — thus lowering fuel burn.”

While not the largest lever, digital efficiency is important as, for the most part, the pieces are very much available today. The reality is that there are few if any things we can do that will deliver large, step-change payback but are also easy. The step-change innovations, such as new engine design, new wing design, and alternate powered electric propulsion, are all the result of enormous investment and

industry commitment. In this sense, the present value of things we can do today are equal to or greater than the larger sustainable aviation levers which are years, or even decades, and large capital investments, away.

REAL-WORLD ‘WIN-WIN’ EXAMPLES

What we are presenting here can be generally scoped within Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM), which is a super-set of what we generally think of as ‘health management’. IVHM encompasses a broad swathe of technologies, both within and beyond the traditional digital aviation domain; it is the unified capability of systems to assess the current or future state of the member system’s health and integrate that picture of system health within a framework of available resources and operational demand. It is a very wide-reaching capability encompassing business cases and models; legislation, certification and standards; architecture and design; as well as algorithms for prognostics, diagnostics and reasoning. IVHM is a key component of the ‘digital aviation’ domain.

We can categorize the sustainability benefits which stem from IVHM as direct and indirect, as well as tangible and intangible. Intangible benefits are often focused on employee and market perceptions and brand image. They are very real but difficult to quantify. Here we focus on the tangible benefits. The direct benefits can include material and waste reduction, reduced energy usage, reduced noise, enhanced biodiversity, and of course lower emissions of CO2 and other pollutants of concern. Indirect benefits include labor efficiency, human quality of life, safety, and material usage and consumption. By its very nature, increased efficiency supports sustainability, both directly and indirectly. The previous paper-to-digital example is an excellent illustration of this.

The classic IVHM use case involves proactively and remotely understanding a vehicle’s current or future serviceability. We often call this ‘predictive maintenance’, ‘condition-based maintenance’ or ‘aircraft health management’. When we can predict a pending equipment failure, we can reap the economic benefit of dealing with the issue in a scheduled manner and avoid the likelihood and impact of a service and mission interruption. We can also deliver material direct sustainability benefits. In many cases, operation with a degraded system, while safe and approved, can greatly limit operations in terms of altitude or range. This results in fewer degrees of freedom in vehicle usage and lessens the likelihood of mission or schedule completion. In cases where the equipment is part of the environmental control system, such as a valve, a very significant direct fuel burn penalty (up to 4%) and additional resulting CO2 emissions may be avoided. Of course, there are indirect benefits which follow, such as reduced stock requirements, parts shipping costs, and more efficient labor utilization. This is an excellent example of economic and performance benefits ‘paying’ for an activity, and there being measurable sustainability benefits. This plays out in many other digital aviation activities.

As in the case of aircraft health management, we can proactively monitor and

Often the data sources are the same, and in some cases a dedicated data acquisition scheme is used for crew performance monitoring. Often the segregation is driven by personal privacy concerns. Regardless, much can be done with aircraft data to drive sustainability. For example, when combined with modern flight deck Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) or mobile device hosted applications, we can monitor and optimize pilot decision making, help pilots meet efficiency goals and ensure compliance with company sustainability policies. The benefits can be substantial with fuel savings having been demonstrated as high as 4%. Of course, this leads to proportionally lower CO2 emissions.

Considerable energy expenditure and consumption occur during ground operations, and we can apply these types of digital techniques to this phase of operations. By monitoring and optimizing ground operations with new sensors and analytics we can ensure maximized operational efficiency throughout maintenance and flight operations activities. For example, the latest Jeppesen ‘Smart EFB’ applications help pilots understand the prevailing taxi situation, actively manage slot and pushback requests, more accurately predict their inbound and outbound clearances, and support implementation of reduced engine taxi operations. By actively monitoring aircraft auxiliary power unit (APU) usage data (e.g., by location) we can encourage and drive the use of more energy efficient ground power. By applying sophisticated analytics and modelling to airport air and ground traffic we can streamline air traffic flow, reduce wasted flight time at arrival, reduce taxi time.

In summary, by optimizing ground operations via analytics we can reduce overall energy usage/emissions, reduce undesirable noise, and improve biodiversity through more efficient utilization of land.

Thales Avionics is very focused on applying digital to the issue of sustainability in the near term. Denis Bonnet, Director Innovation, Thales Avionics Global Business Unit, told us that, “In order to accelerate the near-term benefit from greener operation, Thales strongly believes that it is essential to set-up and disseminate a single source of truth in order to assess the climate impact of flight operations across the whole eco-system. It is important to ensure that green initiatives should not focus solely on CO2 emission but include other emissions such as contrails.

Finally, an important aspect to accelerate operational and technological improvements is through open and transparent collaboration between pilots,

airlines and air navigation services starting through digital tools.”

By monitoring and analyzing aircraft data via IVHM methods, we can understand the fuel efficiency characteristics of individual aircraft and their performance on different routes. With this understanding we can optimize the usage of the aircraft by route, carry the optimal amount of fuel, and identify degradations (caused by ice, sand, volcanic ash etc.) of aircraft and take quick action to remedy (e.g., control surface trim adjustments). This results in lower Emissions via reduced fuel consumption, reduced energy and reduced materials usage/wastage resulting from less maintenance throughout life cycle. This is crucial if civil aircraft are to become compliant with the demands of the Circular Economy.

Regarding maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), an enormous amount of investment and energy is expended to sustain aircraft throughout their lifecycle. As we know, for every dollar spent as part of an aircraft purchase, that much is spent on maintenance throughout the service life of the aircraft. As such, MRO is a major target area for efficiency improvements via digital methods. By enabling new more autonomous inspection methods we can improve efficiency and increase the accuracy of inspection while reducing labor and energy usage. This reduces unneeded repair or removals waste. Also, by deploying analytics to the aircraft troubleshooting process we can reduce the number of maintenance actions and ‘no fault found’ removals. ‘Rogue units’ can also be identified and addressed through procedure or scrap. The result of digitally enhanced MRO includes lower energy usage and reduced materials usage/wastage, along with the commensurate economic savings. As an example, SAP is focused on using their A&D digital manufacturing and maintenance footprint to support sustainability. Torsten Welte, Global VP of SAP A&D Industry Business, shared with us, “The key is linking data across the lifecycle. We see measurable sustainability efficiencies across the design, manufacturing and sustainment phases. This is important because every wasted activity adds costs and emissions and detracts the industry’s ability to invest in innovation.”

The overall economic picture of commercial aviation is both challenging and increasingly complex. For a number of compelling reasons, leased aircraft as a percentage of total aircraft fleets have increased substantially in recent years, as have integrated and managed maintenance programs. In response, OEMs, MROs and operators are increasingly deploying analytics in new ways, combining aircraft technical data with maintenance contractual agreements and operational data to run complex ‘what if?’ scenarios to identify efficiencies across complete life cycle of an asset or aircraft. By applying advanced analytics and modelling at the material, component, subassembly or asset level across its entire lifecycle we can optimize the procurement, manufacturing, operation, maintenance and ultimate retirement/ scrap of the asset (again ensuring compliance with the Circular Economy) The economic benefits are manifest, and this also results in lower energy usage and reduced material usage.

LOOKING AHEAD

Today’s focus is to continually make the air transport industry more resilient, safe and sustainable. This means that innovation continues apace. For example, Cranfield’s IVHM Centre has, with its Core Partners, had a long-term aspiration to deliver a so-called ‘Conscious Aircraft’ with the potential for a zero-maintenance aircraft platform. This concept aims to achieve the creation of an IVHM system that is capable of being fully aware of the aircraft’s condition, able to either suggest appropriate action or take action for itself. By creating the ‘Conscious Aircraft’ (figure 1) the entire aircraft is monitored and is linked to the Aviation ecosystem (airports, airspace, airlines, passengers, aftermarket services), maximizing the benefits from the previous examples. This concept aims to eliminate unforeseen technical faults and, in the event of damage, be able to decide on actions that minimize impact on the environment or operate a modified mission in a military application. The promised sustainability benefits are significant and varied. They include lower emissions from lower fuel consumption, lower energy usage and reduced materials usage/wastage.

On another, wider scale, there is a unique opportunity to apply the same, proven digital and analytics methods we’ve created and deployed for aviation to futureproof the industry’s green technology investments. That is, by leveraging proven IVHM methods and modelling, the aviation industry can increase the likelihood of

success during the introduction of new technologies/solutions while accelerating their introduction, resulting in the achievement of the industry’s sustainability goals.

SUMMARY

It’s well understood that IVHM and digital aviation are delivering economic benefits today. As discussed above they are also delivering significant, albeit often unrecognized, sustainability benefits in both flight operations and technical operations. By looking at these activities through a new lens we can also see that digital will have a key role to secure the promise of sustainability-focused investments and that operations and sustainment are as sustainable as possible.

As the work and investments regarding fleet renewal to more efficient aircraft, sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), green hydrogen and renewable electricity, and alternative fueled electric propulsion continue, so will the operational efficiencydriven sustainability gains through IVHM and digital aviation. New research and investment focuses are opening exciting new horizons and opportunities, reaping benefits throughout the entire aerospace lifecycle. Cranfield University is focused on the future of aviation and sustainability. A NEW BREED OF TALENT MSc in Aviation Digital Technology Management RATIONALE

Increasing numbers of intelligent aircraft are being introduced as part of a wider technological development across the aviation industry ecosystem. As more intelligent and conscious aircraft enter service, support systems are also becoming more intelligent. Pre-COVID, 87.7m jobs were supported by the air transport industry worldwide: the 2020 Boeing Pilot and Technicians Outlook report projects that 73,9000 new maintenance technicians will be needed to maintain the global fleet over the next 20 years. This course is aimed at the technologists, engineers and managers who shape the future as digital technology transforms the aviation business.

Cranfield University IVHM Centre has been leading research in predictive health maintenance with technology adopted by major aircraft manufacturers. Elliot Margul, Chief Executive Officer of Aerostrat explains how listening to customers and acting on their inputs has made Aerostrat a preferred partner for customer airlines Elliot is responsible for the corporate strategy, sales, and product at Aerostrat.

Aircraft IT: Your name, your job title, and the name of the business?

Elliot Margul: Elliot Margul, CEO, Aerostrat Aircraft IT: How did Aerostrat get started?

EM: When I was an employee at Alaska Airlines, I observed a significant gap in the tools available to the planning team. I began discussing the idea with friends, who eventually introduced me to our other cofounders, Cody and Frankie. After some discussion, we created Aerostrat build Aerros, our base planning solution. After spending a year designing and developing our product, we signed our first customer. Aerostrat currently has eleven customers with more soon to sign Aircraft IT: What is the guiding business principle that drives Aerostrat?

EM: Our team works closely with and understands our customers and their specific needs. This is one

of our biggest differentiators as a company. While solving our customer’s problems, we actively keep them involved in many aspects at Aerostrat. Our goal is that their ideas and feedback make their way into our software and business processes. This ensures that our product seamlessly integrates into our customers’ processes, and our business processes align with our customers’ expectations.

We want our customers to feel like we are part of their team and vice versa.

Aircraft IT: What has Aerostrat’s greatest business achievement been to date, and why?

EM: With great pride, I can say we have made many achievements in recent years. One that I would like to highlight, because it genuinely exemplifies who we are as a company, is the implementation of our IT compliance certifications and attestations (SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001:2013). standards in place. However, we did not understand the framework as none of us had a compliance background. Like we do with customer problems, we spent time reading, listening, and understanding the necessary requirements. Within a matter of months and with minimal outside assistance, our team implemented and passed our first ISO audit. We repeated the process several years later when we

passed our first SOC 2 Type II audit. I am most proud of the fact that we were able to implement these items with minimal guidance and in our most recent audit, had no findings.

Aircraft IT: What have been your disappointments and what have you learned from them?

EM: One of my most disappointing memories was when we first launched our beta and brought it to multiple prospective customers. After speaking to them, none were very interested in our product. In fact, one customer gave us a list of over 120 things we would need to build for them to even consider us as a vendor. It was a huge gut punch. Proudly, our team regrouped and implemented almost all those requested features within six months. Consequently, that customer was sold on Aerros while other companies became intrigued with our beta too.

None had seen a software company implement their feedback to such a degree while delivering it in such a timely manner.

Aircraft IT: In a sentence, how would you summarize what Aerostrat does for aircraft maintenance customers?

EM: Aerostrat offers a base planning solution that enables airlines or MROs to plan their entire maintenance program, at any level of detail, from aircraft delivery to exit.

Aircraft IT: What do you feel will be the next big thing in maintenance Aviation IT? EM: At Aerostrat, we believe that the next big thing in maintenance aviation IT will be a deliberate move to more collaborative experiences. Outside of aviation software, we’ve seen major platforms aggressively pursue functionality that helps people work together effectively. Covid has accelerated this focus and really highlighted the necessity of being able to easily work with a team from anywhere in the world. Because of this, releasing seamless real-time collaborative planning is one of our core missions in 2022. We know this reduction in friction

will greatly benefit our customers with large, potentially hybrid workforces. Users of aviation software have been exposed to the value of real-time collaboration in consumer software, and we’re working on unlocking that potential for the maintenance planning lifecycle.

Aircraft IT: What do you want your customers to say about Aerostrat EM: I want our customers to say that we listen to feedback and deliver meaningful outcomes. It is essential that our customers know they are heard by incorporating their feedback into our product. It is why we meet with them regularly, design features with them, and let them test our features from initial release to stable functioning. Most importantly, it is also why we release updates monthly. It is gratifying that we can look at most buttons, functions, etc. in Aerros and know it was customer inspired.

I

n this case study, I want to share with readers our experience at AISG of deciding we needed, selecting and implementing a new MRO IT solution. But, before embarking on the story of how we made this change, it will be useful to first tell you something about AISG, the business that is the subject of the case study.

AISG

AISG is a line maintenance services provider and MRO for most of the major airlines in the world. The business started in Cancún in Mexico and there are now 32 stations around Mexico. We service airliners from wide-body to narrow body aircraft across all OEMs and types. The main business is to provide a service for airlines in Mexico but we are now spreading that service to Europe and the Dominican Republic. How the company started was because airlines don’t want to have a technician in every station where their aircraft land to cover only one flight a day. As a result, AISG started offering solutions with one or more technicians on a station who could be trained to be able to serve the aircraft operated by a number of airlines throughout the week or the month which would save them costs as against having their own staff in all of those different locations.

FINDING A NEW SOFTWARE SOLUTION

The need for a new software solution came about because AISG didn’t have a web-based solution; so, we started to look for options among the many available in the sector. We met some of the developers and vendors before coming to the conclusion that Ultramain was the company that offered a better solution for our purposes and, importantly, were willing to help us in the implementation process for the changes.

One of the main goals when we set out on this journey was to have the software or the algorithm with which we could assign flights to technicians. That way, AISG could have a resource planning solution for the future. Ultramain were able to create that with the resource planners to produce a solution that would enable us to know how many technicians we would need during a certain period of time, where they would be needed, for which airline and which aircraft type; that would help us to plan our work better. It was a great solution and represented the biggest challenge faced by Ultramain in meeting AISG’s needs because there are many variables in the requirement. Only Ultramain were willing to undertake this and that was how the project started.

THE ULTRAMAIN SOLUTION CHOSEN

There are more than thirty different applications in the ULTRAMAIN® suite. At the highest level, ULTRAMAIN is a full asset management and logistics system built specifically around aviation. The system has attracted some very large customers

But, specifically in the case of AISG and the line maintenance solution, the problem was something that Ultramain had never really encountered before on the scale that AISG operates. AISG has more than seventy different airline customers, each of which requires different policies and procedures training, plus they have a country certificate and a type rating certificate, the technicians have multiple certificates.

One of the challenges around AISG’s line maintenance service is ‘do we have the right person with the right qualifications at the right time to meet the aircraft?’

There are also associated issues of, who needs more training; how do we make sure that the person there has the right qualifications and that they are not expired; and how do we ensure that the right person is in the city to which the aircraft is going?

Added to that are the usual variables around inbound flights, are they on time, and are they on schedule, plus the fleet type that is coming in? That’s what the solution that Ultramain put together had to do. The line maintenance solution for MROs with the optimization to bring all that data together and then present AISG with an option to plan up to sixty days ahead. At the time of writing, we were already planning a month ahead with the new solution.

A key requirement that AISG wanted to have in the system included a modification up to the next level of capability which was already in the ULTRAMAIN system — optimization, crew schedules, certifications. We wanted the ability to create the work schedules automatically, based around when AISG’s customers’ aircraft were coming in. So, the Ultramain system now takes a forecast of the flights that are coming in to the cities served by AISG and looks at the resource requirements to build an optimized work schedule that conforms to the Labor laws in Mexico which vary from city to city with differing regulations about when people can travel to and from work. All of that gets put into the system which then delivers highly optimized schedules to ensure that the technicians needed are not in training, they’re not on a day off or on their holidays or any other leave.

That’s the issue with getting resources to the aircraft. Mobile Mechanic™ (figure 1) is then used to deliver the assignments out to the individuals; they can look, by station, to see what they are assigned to and the work that has been allocated to them.

Another module from the software that AISG uses, Labor Optimization (figs 2-4), is also helpful in forecasting future needs, taking into consideration the schedules, the technicians, the aircraft types, the airlines, restrictions from the authorities and the union and permissions from the authorities about each specific aircraft.

There is also Mobile Inventory™, the ability to scan parts in and out without necessarily needing a traditional barcode reader but using Blue Tooth fobs associate with technicians’ mobile phones which helps to keep the cost of infrastructure down.

HOW THE SOLUTION WORKED FOR AISG

The mobile App has proved to be the most helpful because it frees technicians from the need to go back to the office, sit at a computer and key in all the relevant information about a job. Having it all in a mobile device makes the process really simple with a real-time solution. AISG uses the Mobile Mechanic to register all activities in real time and uses Mobile Inventory to register consumables used. So, if an aircraft is on the ground and the technician decides that it needs oil, he can deliver it from the can but can deduct it from the Mobile Inventory so that, if the inventory is getting low on stock, it can be seen by someone in the office who can order more. That is a very good solution for AISG.

AISG uses Mobile Inventory to make sure that the technician has everything they need to service each flight, it’s also used for audits and, at the time of writing, AISG was starting to use it for managing vehicles. ULTRAMAIN also allows users to track all ground support equipment with full asset management capabilities and AISG is starting to include those in the system.

SELECTION AND IMPLEMENTATION

At AISG, we considered the options available to us in the market as well as recommendations such as from Cathay Pacific Airways and we saw the system working because Cathay is an AISG customer as well as using the ULTRAMAIN solution. We did look at other software but seeing the solution in use with an airline who was also an AISG customer helped a lot with the initial approach from Ultramain which supported the decision to go with them. We were also impressed at their willingness to hep AISG to create a solution for our business model and that was another driver to choose ULTRAMAIN.

On the implementation, we were fortunate to get a recommendation to someone who had worked on a similar implementation with a previous airline. That helped AISG to achieve a better understanding from a consultant who had already used the software. So, that person was brought on to the team and we started the implementation which has taken, from the start, six months at the time of writing and with some further implementation still to do as well as bedding in some of the software to work better for AISG’s specific needs. The implementation was not too smooth at the beginning, given the many variables to be considered as well as there being so many airline customers and scenarios; also, Ultramain had to first learn AISG’s business and then start to program for that. That was the most challenging time and took longer but after that, it started to run smoothly; introducing the solution, starting testing and seeing the system working in about six months. It had been a larger challenge than Ultramain had anticipated, particularly with the full extent of the numbers of variables in the operation and the complexities of getting literally thousands of permutations based on all the data that AISG had. In the second phase, Ultramain assigned a number of its own specialist staff to support the implementation. By working together, we were able to power through.

COVID did come at this time and the impact, as for the whole sector, was mainly on resources because AISG was not able to continue with the planned schedule; we had planned to get more modules in use but resources were compromised. There was not that much available activity to work with to create more scenarios and carry out more tests which meant that those kinds of project were not able to be completed in the time planned.

TRAINING

OTHER CHALLENGES

As has already been stated, there were many variables identified and many challenges that were not apparent at the beginning; those were the drivers that started increasing the complexity of the project. Of course, there was a budget to start with and then it started increasing; but that went well because the owners said ‘this is what we want; this is what we’re going to do’. There were some challenges with the approval but the deal was good, Ultramain understood AISG’s needs and, since this is going to be a long-term relationship, they were willing to help AISG in that.

Because there was not that much activity, the problems faced by the project were reduced and AISG was able to see the different scenarios and solve them because there was sufficient time available; that said, there were actually not that many problems to solve. But we were able to prepare for the next step which is what was underway at the time of writing.

“As part of its continual enhancement to the solution and in response to specific requests from AISG, Ultramain was able to make the required adjustments that AISG could see would work for us. There also were some changes to AISG processes to ensure that we got the best from the new software…”

The first approach to training was to train the trainers; that way the Ultramain team could provide the information to key AISG staff. Bearing in mind that there was also a language barrier that could be difficult at times but it was done. First, AISG needed key staff to know the new system and be able to teach and start training other staff. These key staff were then competent to use the system and understand how it works before passing that knowledge on down the line. The approach was, train the trainer in-house and then they could train the station managers and on down to the technicians who would be using the system most.

USING THE ULTRAMAIN SOLUTION AND MODULES

It’s always a challenge to implement a new software system because people get used to doing things in certain ways and, when that changes, they find everything difficult and complicated. There was a learning curve in the early days using the new solution because older mechanics wanted to stay on paper (no technology), and younger mechanics wanted a solution that was more like normal phone apps. However, after they started using it, the mechanics of all ages found the new solution intuitive and a real time saver. It was a challenge for AISG to make the users of the new system believe that this was a system that would create a solution for the future. We still believe that to be the case and, notwithstanding the challenges, the goal is still the same. If AISG can meet eighty percent of our original requirements, that will be a great deal.

LESSONS LEARNED

As always with a project on this scale, we learned a few new things along the way. First, we learned that you have to create the scenarios and learn to work with the software managers and project managers to see and decide what is going to be the solution. Having many variables already understood by both parties to the project helps to get to the final decision. Often, in projects such as this, there will be a project team that has a lot of ideas about what they want the future project to be but other than a few key corporate strategies there’s often no-one asking ‘how do we want to do business?’ For the software provider,

having the opportunity with the customer to do that is very beneficial and gets the project away from all the independent ideas that a committee tries to push forward after the contract has been signed. Also, with any software vendor, there will always be the limitation of how the software works.

Solutions are all designed to work a certain way. Having an idea of how you want the business to run but then sharing that with and collaborating with the software vendor is the key to success. It ensures that the vendor understands how the client wants their business to be run and the client understands how the software works. Alignment between the vendor and the customer is a very important component in any successful project.

As part of its continual enhancement to the solution and in response to specific requests from AISG, Ultramain was able to make the required adjustments that AISG could see would work for us. There also were some changes to AISG processes to ensure that we got the best from the new software but, in the end, it was mainly a matter of getting used to doing things in a different way. If there is a solution that is going to save the user time, that is not a problem.

Potential customers for new software solutions need to think about how they want to do things in the future, how they want their company to work. Maybe the next step for the future in a project is to think about the affected work force; how old they are and how they will face the changes. The solution needs to be userfriendly. It will be necessary either to change the personnel or change the software.

Some will immediately say that the new way is great, some older people might not take to it at first. The good thing in AISG is that our technicians have already been exposed to many different software solutions because our customers use different solutions. Having tested all the software, we came to the conclusion that ULTRAMAIN was the best solution for our company.

BENEFITS, NEXT STEPS AND FUTURE PLANS

AISG is still discovering the benefits as the timescale rolls out. But we already enjoy having real-time information, saving time on all the data that needs to be entered into the system; a job that can now be done on a mobile device. There is also a good system for organizing data to be able to analyze it and to create helpful reports that support planning and inform the business.

The next steps include, as already mentioned, extending the asset management capability to vehicles and ground equipment. Beyond that, the plan will be to integrate invoicing into the solution; have information available in real time and be able to feed the invoicing software system with the information that’s already in Ultramain.

AISG was already, at the time of writing, moving to Ultramain hosting and going fully onto the Cloud. ULTRAMAIN’s next release, called v9.0 Unity, is going to greatly improve the current capabilities with the release of a full browser-based html client. That will give users the ability to create their own user experiences

within the software, so it’s not just the dashboards that are available today but it will be ‘build your own dashboards’ and ULTRAMAIN will be taking that to the next step enabling users to really assemble screens any way they want inside ULTRAMAIN and, if there are rough edges in the user experience, they can be trimmed down and made easier to use by users like IASG. Ultramain is always looking to improve optimization, something valued by users such as AISG. A good thing with Ultramain is that, when other companies join the user population, and bring different problems and requirements with them, and they get solved, AISG and other customer get the benefit of that. Or when there is a different software update or a new function, all users will get that advantage at a reasonable cost. For instance, there was recently, in Asia, a Go-Live with ULTRAMAIN in a similar business to AISG who requested some enhancements and they have all been made available to AISG and others. The software is always evolving, pushed by customer ideas as well as Ultramain’s development process.

THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS

The low hanging fruits in maintenance data management

Henrik Ollus asks why is it that, while the amount of data generated and recorded in aircraft operations has skyrocketed in the last few decades, the promised business benefits from the data have been slow to materialize.

The most impactful promises for what data utilization can deliver are extended component life and predictive maintenance. These have the potential for increasing the up-time of high-value assets and transitioning most unscheduled maintenance events to scheduled maintenance. They are made possible by the ever-increasing amount of data recorded by modern aircraft and AI-powered data analytics. Yet, the actual impact of implemented solutions to date has often fallen short of the expected benefits.

THE CHALLENGES

The main reason that the benefits are not achieved is that data management maturity for most airlines is low, and as with any data analytics applied, the quality of what you get out is determined by what you put in.

Prerequisites for solutions offering extended life and predictive maintenance are high data quality and seamless data sharing between collaborating parties, e.g. original

equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and airlines. To achieve full benefit from the solutions, additional data flows are required from the operators’ operative systems, such as the Maintenance & Engineering (M&E) system. The first challenge here is inadequate data quality. Paper-based maintenance process, manual data entry and sharing of records in .pdf format compromise data quality and cause delays in data entry.

The second challenge is the implementation of automated data exchange between the operator and OEM. The wide range of systems used within the industry results in a low level of standardization of data and data models across systems. For example, the M&E systems market is fragmented and there are multiple widely used systems, each with varying data models and integration capabilities.

THE SOLUTIONS

In many cases, the OEM can offer added value through analytics but expects the airline to independently implement data exchange and ensure high data quality. Some OEMs understand the challenges this poses for airlines and offer integration and data quality monitoring as a part of their leading-edge solutions. One good example is Rolls-Royce that, as a part of their Blue Data Thread Program, is rolling out an automated data exchange service for all their Trent-engine family customers.

There are many opportunities for airlines to improve their data quality as a part of other ongoing digitalization initiatives. For example, including a data quality working group as a part of the project in paperless initiatives ensures that underlying data issues are addressed, while comprehesive user training and a well-made user experience design for the end-users will go a long way towards ensuring that high data quality is maintained.

Airlines that want to take it one step further would implement automated data quality monitoring as a part of any new integrations to their operative systems. Automated validation logic and crosschecking of data can be enabled with well-designed integration architecture and a solid integration platform or data exchange service. Currently, industry-relevant integration projects are, for example, M&E system integrations with the eTechLogs or mechanics mobile apps and external integration to MRO service providers’ and OEMs’ systems.

Implementing ad hoc point-to-point integrations is tempting, but eventually, they become costly as they lead to a complicated integration architecture, low technical reliability and compromised data quality. In the long run, it pays to avoid the ‘minimum viable integration’ mindset. Opting for a generic, industry-agnostic integration platform is often a valid option but requires configuration, monitoring and maintenance by the IT department. Airlines that are looking to minimize their burden can choose a truly hands-off data exchange service offered by aviation industry specialized vendors with expertise in the aircraft data domain.

Let’s take eTechLog implementation as an example, as this is on the agenda for many airlines. A

typical eTechLog integration to the M&E system is implemented with minimal effort as a point-to-point integration. While this does the job for data transfer, it does not include data quality monitoring and cross-checking between systems. In addition to lacking integration reliability, each new point-to-point integration makes the overall integration architecture complex, which causes additional costs in support and maintenance, and may also compromise information security.

The recommended alternative is for the airline to bring in an integration platform or data exchange service which can perform data validation and cross-checking, ensure that input errors are detected, check that data in both systems remains reconciled, and proactively raise alerts to catch problems as early as possible. The additional benefit is, of course, that future integrations can be implemented using the same platform or service for simplified overall integration architecture. Using an aviation data exchange service greatly reduces the internal IT burden.

In summary, while there is a gap between the promises of leading-edge technologies and airlines data quality maturity, there are opportunities to bridge that gap while achieving short term benefits.
