The Dominican | Summer 2025

Blessings to our entire St. Dominic community as we celebrate another incredible year of prayer, study, community, and service at St. Dominic High School. This school year has provided many opportunities of growth for our students across these four Dominican pillars. We welcomed 22 students and faculty fully into the church during our Easter Liturgy. We celebrated as the Class of 2025 surpassed $25.3 million in college scholarships. Our community funded the parking lot expansion and renovations at Crusader Stadium. In April we opened up the premier high school baseball and softball stadium in the area, and maybe the Midwest. And just weeks ago we sent 16 students and faculty on a mission trip to serve at the border, while 35 students, faculty, and staff traveled to Nicaragua to help provide clean water to a village in Chinandega.

Perhaps the most significant opportunity for growth this school year came with the formal announcement of a Building Trades Curriculum for our students. A part of our strategic plan, the vision has been to allow students to experience the building trades as a part of our everyday academic offerings. Through the hard work of our Principal, Stacy Stewart ’89, and our Director of Guidance, Mr. Blake Markway, a schedule was developed to allow students to take building trades classes as a practical art or an elective the same as they could take engineering, computer science, business, or biomedical science classes.

One of our loyal and generous St. Dominic families stepped forward with a $2.4 million gift for the purchase of a 28,000 square foot warehouse adjacent to our campus. Through the work of our Advancement team led by Stacie Ballard, additional funds were raised for the renovation and outfitting of this new space now known as the “Trades Center.” Renovations began in earnest in April and are on target for trades’ classes to begin in this space in late August.

Our consistent methodology to providing an exceptional education for our students is to offer experiential classes that allow students to see if they have an interest in a particular field as they move forward beyond St. Dominic and into college, seminary, military service, trades school, or the workforce. As with other course offerings at St. Dominic, the Building Trades program will similarly afford our students early exposure to potential career paths to explore what different careers might look like for them.

I pray that this summer offers each member of our St. Dominic community a chance to rest, spend time with family, and look ahead with hope to the many opportunities that lie ahead in our lives. May God bless you, and please continue to keep St. Dominic in your prayers.

“ St. Dominic has always felt like a home away from home–and it still does. Although we would like to gift hundreds of dollars to the St. Dominic Fund annually, we just can’t do that. So we decided to allocate 10% of our estate to some of our favorite organizations and charities, including St. Dominic. It feels good to know that we can contribute to the good things happening at St. Dominic for many years to come.”

BUILDING EXCELLENCE: A Blueprint that Works for St. Dominic

At St. Dominic, we have a history of building excellence. From recent campus improvements including the Wies Family Center for the Sciences and our new state-of-the-art baseball and softball stadium to expanded academic and co-curricular programs like our interactive broadcasting studio, as well as hands-on courses in computer science, engineering, aerospace and biomedical sciences through Project Lead the Way, we are committed to providing exceptional experiences for our students and families.

Thisfall we will launch our new building trades program, making St. Dominic one of the few private, co-educational schools in the region to offer hands-on construction trades coursework as part of our on-campus curriculum. The new program, which seeks to foster students’ curiosity and passion for the trades industry, will include coursework in four core areas: carpentry, electrical, plumbing/pipefitting, and HVAC.

“By offering this exploratory curriculum, we aim to help our students make informed career choices, emphasizing the importance of skill development and problem-solving,” said Principal Stacy Stewart ‘89. “Through this program, we seek to inspire both our male and female students to consider pursuing further education or apprenticeships in construction-related fields, while also nurturing an appreciation for the built environment in which we all live and work.”

The new curriculum, which will be restricted to juniors and seniors, was designed in response to students who have been asking for this type of coursework at St. Dominic. According to recent school surveys, over the past two years nearly one in five students said they would be interested in having the option to take trades-related courses at St. Dominic. The initiative to implement industrial arts programming is also part of St. Dominic’s current five year strategic plan.

“I was really excited because we’re one of the first Catholic schools to have a trades program in this area,” said junior Max Rademeyer. “Everybody learns in different ways, and this is another way St. Dominic offers the best education for students.”

To accommodate the hands-on coursework, St. Dominic has purchased a 28,000-sq-ft warehouse adjacent to our campus. The property was purchased through the generosity of an anonymous benefactor, who donated $2.4M–the single largest gift in the history of the school.

The facility will house two traditional classrooms and four large laboratory workshops. It also provides space for an expanded fitness center–nearly three times the size of our current facility–and a new, multi-purpose athletic court, which will primarily serve as a dedicated space for our cheer and dance teams.

“Our programs have grown exponentially–we’ve added additional teams to sports like basketball and volleyball, and all of those programs are really starting to utilize our fitness center to a point where we’re simply outgrowing it,” said head football and track coach Blake Markway. “In addition to housing additional equipment and machines, the new fitness center will include a dedicated space for plyometric training which will allow for speed, agility and power training in addition to our current strength training fitness programs. A larger fitness center will serve all of our students, not just those in our athletic programs.”

“What’s

truly remarkable about our new building trades program is that students can gain exposure to the field right here on St. Dominic’s campus as part of their daily coursework, along with their core classes in traditional subjects like science, math, literature and religion.”

- President Jim Welby

A group of students insterested in exploring opportunities in building trades attended a demonstration by representatives from T.J. Wies Contracting in our pre-rennovated space where the Trades Center will be located.

WHAT STUDENTS ARE SAYING ...

“Personally, I like working hands-on, so trades have always been something I’ve thought about for my future. I think the building trades program at St. Dominic will help prepare me for any future jobs I want to do.” - Max Rademeyer ‘26

“With the choir room moving to the old fitness center, we will have a better room with better acoustics, and it will end up being so much better for the choral pieces that we put together. Building those harmonies will produce better music for our concerts, and it will just be a great learning opportunity.” - Madison Huff ‘26

“One of the biggest benefits of this new space is that a lot more underclassmen will be able to receive the benefits of a larger weight room and everybody will be able to get more reps in…I’m most excited about being able to continue to get bigger and better as a football team, and I think all the new equipment and machines will help with that.” - Brennan Czeschin ‘26

“For us to have the right materials and place to train will make such an impact on our dance team practices and how we focus on our routines. We typically perform on gym floors, so to be able to practice where we perform will help us so much.” - Danica Willis ‘28

In addition, moving the fitness center to the new trades building will allow for the band and choral program to move to a room with higher ceilings, better acoustics and improved sound quality for our singers and musicians as they hone their skills. And moving the band and choral room will free up space to build out four additional classrooms and a dedicated teacher workroom for curriculum writing and professional development.

“We are continuously evolving to meet the needs of our students and our community by building excellence in everything we do,” said Welby. “None of this would be possible without the generous support of our community who is helping provide transformational opportunities for both current and future generations of Crusaders.”

Construction on the new Trades Center is currently underway with renovations at the main school scheduled to begin this summer. All construction is planned to be completed by the time classes begin this fall.

ANNABELLE BUSH '25, CLASS OF 2025 COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

“My time at St. Dominic has been truly transformational. Through both academic and extracurricular experiences, I’ve not only grown as a student but also developed strong leadership skills that I’ll carry with me into the future. Being part of the girls golf program, National Honor Society, and Peer Ministry gave me the opportunity to lead by example, support others, and serve the school community in meaningful ways. This fall, I’ll be attending Drake University to continue my golf journey and pursue a degree in Business Management. I’m excited to build on the foundation St. Dominic has given me and look forward to using my leadership skills to make a positive impact in college and beyond.”

Crusader SERVICE CONTINUES...

Angie (Apicelli) Hirbe ‘97

Angie is an Associate Professor at Wash U in the Division of Oncology, where she cares for patients with rare tumors and runs a research lab that is working on early cancer detection and novel targeted therapies. Together with her husband, who also works at Wash U as a radiation oncologist, the couple have three children Gabe, Isabelle and Charlie, who all attend Catholic school. The family belongs to St. Margaret of Scotland parish, where there is a large emphasis on social justice and service to those in need. From running a diaper drive and volunteering at the St Vincent De Paul Food Pantry to preparing meals and handmade cards around the holidays, the family prioritizes serving others. Angie’s oldest son is also very involved in the youth group at St. Margaret where he participates in Catholic Heart Work Camp, spending a week each summer serving underserved communities. Next summer, Angie and Gabe will also be participating in a weeklong service trip to the Dominican Republic with his high school.

Ben Woodley ‘01

Ben met his wife Beth (a student at Visitation Academy) during the Archbishop May day of service, which included all the awardees from all of the local Catholic high schools that year. Even though they attended separate colleges, the two kept in touch and were married in April 2007. Together the couple has one son J.J. (who may be on the path to becoming a future Crusader). Ben currently works for a geospatial company and serves as a district leader with the Knights of Columbus across six councils. His family participates in many service projects together each year including Scouting for Food with the boy scouts, as well as volunteering at their home parish of Seven Holy Founders, the Catholic grade school where Beth teaches, and various Knights of Columbus programs and events.

Nick Schlenke ‘09

As both a math teacher and girls soccer coach at St. Dominic, a lot of Nick’s service opportunities are rooted in St. Dominic and his home parish of St. Paul. He believes one of the great things about service is the connections that are built, whether short term like the service trips he participated in as a student or more long term with individuals he

sees more frequently. For example, each year, he volunteers to help out at the St. Paul Parish picnic where he often runs into St. Dominic students or grade school students he has met through summer soccer camps. “At a certain point, service does not necessarily feel so much like work, but more of an opportunity to build up connections while giving back in a small way,” he says.

Sr. Maria Consuela Garzon, FMSG ‘11

Dedicated to a life of service, Sr. Maria entered religious life with the Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George in Alton, IL in 2015 after graduating from Marian University with a degree in elementary education. Since entering, and after three years of initial formation, she taught second grade in Hastings, NE for five years. She is currently finishing her second year as Assistant Director of St. Francis Day Care Center in Alton, IL. Her sister, Elizabeth Garzon '15, also received the Archbishop May Service Award her senior year.

Ky Bauer ‘13

After graduating from St. Dominic, Ky attended Missouri State University, where she received a major in Athletic Training and a minor in Biomedical Sciences. She then went on to receive her doctorate of Physical Therapy at Belmont University in Nashville, TN. Today she lives out her dream and passion by performing physical therapy in the geriatric population, which is the population she did most of her service work with. “They continue to inspire me each and every day,” she says. In addition to geriatrics, she loves to volunteer at church, write devotionals, and encourage others to experience the beautiful life God has graciously gifted us.

Erin (Prendergast) Koerkenmeier '16

While attending Southeast Missouri State University, Erin was involved in several service organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters where she served as a mentor for four years. She also volunteered for different events in the Cape Girardeau area, packed meals for people in third world countries, and made comfort packages for individuals facing cancer. In addition, she was involved in the Newman Center and Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS) where she led a Bible study and served on the leadership team to help plan events. With a passion for raising money to build houses in Haiti, she visited the country

to see several of the houses that were built as a result of her efforts and serve alongside the Missionaries of Charity. Her love for service led her to become a Speech-Language Pathologist, which allows her to help children find their voice and speak more confidently. As a wife and mother to two boys (Daniel and Jonah) her service has now transitioned to serving her family. “Each day I am serving the Lord through my children,” she says. “I am feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, and clothing the naked. I feel incredibly blessed that the Lord has entrusted me to take care of His own children every day.”

Cati Beth Welby ‘20

In May of 2024, Cati Beth graduated from Saint Louis University with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. After graduating, she began her career as an Associate Clinical

Specialist for Medtronic, working in the cardiac division. There she partners with physicians and care teams in both clinic and surgical settings to support patients with/receiving pacemakers and defibrillators. She also serves on the Junior Board of the Maggie Welby Foundation, which recently celebrated 20 years of giving, awarding over $1.1 million to children in need. She continues to prioritize service in all aspects of her life as a personal mission rooted in her St. Dominic education. Her brother, Kelly Welby '23, also received the Archbishop May Service Award during his senior year.

Grace Illy ‘25

2025 Archbishop May Service Award Recipient

Even before arriving at St. Dominic, Grace had been volunteering with Sweet Celebrations, assisting in throwing birthday parties for homeless children and now serving on their leadership team. She has also volunteered with Assumption’s Vacation Bible School, O’Fallon’s Safety Town camp and Food Pantry, Health Occupations Students of America and numerous St. Dominic events. Last summer, Grace spent a week at the US and Mexico border serving migrants at the Humanitarian Respite Center in McAllen, Texas as part of St. Dominic’s mission trip program. In addition, Grace is an incredible student and role model, scoring near the top of her class and earning induction into the National Honors Society. She was also involved in multiple school activities including HOSA, lacrosse, Student Ambassadors, House leadership and Glamour Gals.

STAFF Celebrating MILESTONES

ELIZABETH (LIZ) MURPHY | 25 YEARS

Technology Assistant

Liz Murphy began teaching business courses like Desktop Publishing, Computer Apps, and Office Procedures at St. Dominic in August 2000. After several years of teaching, she became the Technology Coordinator (now known as the Director of Technology). She retired from that position and has continued to work part-time as our Technology Assistant since 2021. One of her favorite St. Dominic traditions is the calming experience of the Living Rosary, which started 30 years ago at the request of Sr. Jeanne Margaret Stoltz, who was the last sister to serve at St. Dominic from our founding order of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkhill.

“My favorite thing about working at St. Dominic is the community. Everyone complements one another well, and it is a wonderful place to work.”

TRISHA GOINS ‘99 | 20 YEARS Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction

After teaching English at St. Dominic for 19 years, last fall Trisha Goins became the Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction, focusing more of her time working with teachers and helping them grow and develop. She loves visiting classrooms and seeing our amazing teachers in action. She also enjoys attending school activities and watching the students shine both in and out of the classroom. As a parent, she feels blessed to be able to send her children (Bridget ‘25 & Sam ‘28) to school here, knowing they are challenged and supported in all the right ways.

“As a teacher and now an administrator, I am amazed by my colleagues and their love and dedication to our school community. I am truly surrounded by the best every day, and I am thankful to be a part of the St. Dominic community.”

ADAM KUEBLER ‘03 | 15 YEARS Social Studies Teacher

For the past 15 years, Adam Kuebler has taught Social Studies courses at St. Dominic, including American Government, World History and Civics. He also serves as Assistant Track Coach and moderator for Mock Trial and Model UN. One of his fondest memories is when the Mock Trial team made it to the state competition in 2018. He enjoys working alongside a great team of people and helping his students find their passions, so they can go off and achieve their goals.

“One of the biggest things I’ve witnessed at St. Dominic since I was a student is the growth in numbers. Also, I think there has been a larger emphasis on faith across the whole community, which has been great.”

KRISTY HAGAN | 10 YEARS

Computer Science Teacher

Kristy Hagan has been teaching Computer Science at St. Dominic for the past 10 years. She also has served as House System Cocoordinator since the House System became a part of St. Dominic and has enjoyed watching it grow into a vital community-building tradition. This year, Kristy also became a Faith Captain leader, helping students find meaningful ways to incorporate our Christian walk into the life of our Houses. Out of her five children, four are proud alumni of St. Dominic. As a parent turned teacher, she has found it rewarding to now be part of this community in a different role, contributing to the same experience that meant so much to her family.

“One tradition that holds a very special place in my heart is the Living Rosary. Eleven years ago, I sat in the bleachers as a parent, watching one of my sons be recognized for his service hours. During that moment, I felt God clearly speak to me — calling me to become a teacher. That fall, I began working toward my Master’s in Teaching, and in His perfect timing, God opened up a half-time teaching position right here. I was able to continue my studies while stepping into the classroom, and I haven’t looked back since. Even after all my children have graduated, I’m so grateful to still be part of the St. Dominic community!”

ANGELA JUERGENSMEYER ‘96

10 YEARS

Science Teacher

Angela Juergensmeyer teaches Science courses like Biology, Chemistry, and Investigative Science at St. Dominic. She also serves as moderator for Music I.N.C. (In the Name of Christ) and mentor for House Gratia (Let’s Go Green Machine!) Due to her passion for prolife, she has served as a chaperone on the last three pilgrimages to Washington D.C. for the March for Life. She also assists Campus Ministry with various retreats, supports RCIA courses through St. Dominic for many of our students and faculty, and has been involved in the performances and fundraising events for the Performing Arts Lovers (PALS) group, due to her children (Luke ‘20, Sophia ‘21, Rose ‘23 & Erica ‘25) being a part of the band, choir, and theater groups. Her family has deep roots in the St. Dominic community, with her mother, in-laws, aunts and uncles, siblings, and many cousins and nieces and nephews all attending St. Dominic. Her husband Steve ‘96 is also a fellow St. Dominic Crusader.

“I love that my main role at St. Dominic is to help form disciples of Christ. It doesn't matter what other duties I have as a teacher, mentor, or moderator, my main focus is always to bring others closer to Christ.”

CATHOLIC 22 MEMBERS INTO OUR WELCOMES ST. DOMINIC

At St. Dominic, we are actively living out our mission of forming disciples of Jesus Christ. This spring, at our final allschool Mass of the year, we welcomed 22 members of our community into the Catholic Church.

All of the candidates participated in the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA), formerly RCIA, through St. Dominic, which was led by Father Patrick Russell, our Vice President for Mission and Identity. The Mass was a beautiful celebration for students, faculty, staff and family members to witness and be a part of.

This is the second year St. Dominic has offered the OCIA program to students and faculty on campus–and it has been well-received. In one year, the number of St. Dominic students that participated in the program and were received fully into the Church has more than doubled, up from nine students last year to 21 this year.

Anna Meyer, a junior at St. Dominic was one of those students, receiving the sacraments of Baptism, first Holy Communion and Confirmation during the Easter celebration.

“I had been wanting to grow more in my faith, so when I heard St. Dominic was offering OCIA, I immediately knew I wanted to join. Going through this process was truly a blessing and everyone was so supportive. I now understand more about myself, and Christ. I’m glad I can look back on this process and know God is always with me.”

- Anna Meyer ‘26

Top image: OCIA students pray as they prepare to receive the sacraments at our All-School Mass on April 23. Bottom image: Anna Meyer '26 is baptized with Holy Water by Fr. Patrick Russell during the celebration.

Nine of the candidates were Baptized during the Mass, while other students, like sophomore Owen Watts and junior Alex Shadow, had already been Baptized and were looking to grow deeper in their Catholic faith through the sacraments of first Holy Communion and Confirmation.

“I decided to receive Confirmation because I wanted to take a new step in my faith journey, even though I wasn’t exactly sure what that would look like. I had been struggling with injuries and my health, and it left me feeling lost and defeated. I was hoping for a deeper sense of peace and clarity in my life – and that’s what Confirmation became for me. I’m deeply grateful for the kindness and guidance of my OCIA leaders—their impact on my life has been truly meaningful.” - Alex Shadow ‘26

“I’ve always wanted to grow in my faith by receiving the sacrament of Confirmation, and this program through St. Dominic made it very easy to do. The OCIA community at St. Dominic has helped me tremendously in working towards Confirmation and growing in the Catholic faith. Through this journey I have an increased drive to be involved in my faith at St. Dominic.” - Owen Watts ‘27

In addition to bringing more individuals into the Church, another benefit of hosting the OCIA program on campus is the deeper sense of community it provides. With opportunities for St. Dominic students and faculty to serve as sponsors for the OCIA candidates, they are able to get to know one another on a more personal level while also enriching their faith.

“I was so blessed to be a part of the OCIA team this year and to serve as a sponsor to two individuals entering into full communion with the Church. One of the people I sponsored is a former student of mine, and it was cool to walk through a Sacrament with her after being her Sacraments teacher the previous year. The other student I sponsored I have gotten to know through the House system, and it has been so awesome seeing how he has grown over the last two years. I am really excited that he has two more years at St. Dominic, and I will be able to keep walking with him on his faith journey.” - Jack Hogan ‘17, Theology Teacher

Senior Olivia Huddleston received the sacraments of initiation last year as a junior and had the opportunity to serve as a sponsor this year for one of her peers.

“Having gone through the program last year and being welcomed into our loving faith, it was amazing being on the other side of things. Being a sponsor has taught me so much. With all of the candidates' questions and their willingness to learn more about what it means to be Catholic, it drove me to learn more to be able to teach them more about our faith. I am so proud to have been a sponsor of the OCIA program and a recent candidate. I think having this program on campus is a beautiful faith opportunity for all who walk through the doors of St. Dominic, and I continue to pray for the love of Jesus to grow in our community daily!” - Olivia Huddleston ‘25

“I am so grateful to Archbishop Rozanski for allowing St. Dominic to host our own OCIA program and even more so, to provide the sacramental rites of initiation at our all-school Mass. It has been so incredible to watch this program nearly double over the past year. One of the benefits of having the sacramental rites at our all-school Mass is that students see what their peers are going through, and it makes the sacraments more accessible to them. The ceremony is so beautiful. You can hear a pin drop. All of the students are so dialed in, even leaning in and craning their necks to get a better view. This Mass brings me so much hope for the future of the Church and reinforces one of the many things that makes St. Dominic the amazing faith-filled community that it is. We are truly living out our mission of forming disciples of Jesus Christ.” - Fr. Patrick Russell

NEW HOUSE PHILANTHROPY PLACES FOCUS ON

Service

This year, St. Dominic High School has introduced a refreshed House philanthropy program with a focus on deeper involvement, clearer communication, and more meaningful service opportunities.

After years of working with organizations like the American Heart Association, the school has shifted its approach to partner with three dedicated charities—L’Arche St. Louis, Amigos for Christ, and Habitat for Humanity, each aligned with two different Houses.

“In the past couple years, we’ve always worked with the American Heart Association, which is a terrific organization and while meaningful in its own way, the lack of direct engagement inspired a change,” said Mr. Nathan Tock '03, Assistant Principal of Student Life.

This year, the decision was made to split donations evenly among three charities, each connected to a specific House.

“The whole idea was, let’s find the reason. We learned from what we had before. Every house having its own charity was tough, and we had a hard time finding six that were a really good fit. Even now, with three, it’s a challenge,” Tock said. “Logistically, more goes into framing a house, or doing some yard work or helping to run a Christmas program, but our kids are taking these opportunities and excelling!”

The only philanthropy carried over from last year is L’Arche, which is partnered with the Virtus and Gratia Houses. L’Arche is an international organization that provides homes and aid to individuals with intellectual disabilities, and the St. Louis chapter offers unique volunteer opportunities for students.

Students participating in the 2024 mission trip to Chinandega, Nicaragua played games and formed meaningful relationships with children in the community.

“L’Arche has by far been the most popular one. There’s always stuff to do such as monthly programming, cooking meals, hanging Christmas lights or yard work. It hits on a variety of different interests,” Tock said.

Students can spend time with L’Arche residents in meaningful, personal ways—gaining not just service hours, but friendships too.

“L’Arche really is such a wonderful community. Gratia now being able to share that community with Virtus just makes it even more meaningful,” senior Lulu Hawkins, Head Of House Gratia said.

Partnered with the Temperentia and Dignitas Houses, Amigos for Christ brings a more global perspective to St. Dominic’s outreach. This nonprofit supports communities in Nicaragua by providing clean water, education and shelter, while also helping immigrants here in the U.S.

“I’m currently talking to the director of programming for Amigos’ school in Nicaragua, and we’re planning a bunch of temporary opportunities,” Tock said.

One of the most exciting opportunities is a virtual call, where St. Dominic students will take Zoom calls with students in Nicaragua, building relationships that may extend to the summer mission trip.

“Amigos for Christ really is a great way to help those in need. It's an incredible opportunity and I’m excited to see what's in store for the future of it,” said Head of House Caritas, senior Johnny Petruso.

This grassroots charity brings awareness to poverty while also offering opportunities for connection and support. Fundraisers and educational events are already in motion to build momentum throughout the year.

Top image: Students presented Habitat for Humanity with a donation from our House Penny Wars competition and Car Club fundraiser. Bottom image: Students from Caritas and Gaudium Houses kicked off their House Philanthropy with a presentation from Habitat for Humanity.

The third charity, aligned with the Caritas and Gaudium Houses, is Habitat for Humanity, which builds homes for families in need across the U.S. This choice was based on its reputation for hands-on service.

“Habitat was chosen because we knew there would be opportunities for students to help build and be on-site,” said Tock.

Habitat also operates the ReStore, a resale outlet for building materials. While volunteering there requires a Saturday training session, which complicates things a bit, a short lesson on store safety allows for lots of future opportunities. And once the project breaks ground, students will have the chance to roll up their sleeves and help build something purposeful.

This year’s philanthropy program shows a renewed commitment to a driven purpose. The shift to a more intentional approach allows students to engage more deeply, not just with their House, but with causes that align with their interests and values.

With L’Arche already offering personal, local experiences, Amigos creating global opportunities, and Habitat preparing to provide hands-on service, St. Dominic’s new philanthropy system is a meaningful change that focuses on action with connection. As we prepare for the next school year, more opportunities will arise for students to get involved and make a difference both close to home and across the world.

Mr. Frank Schlenke retires after 22 wonderful years teaching in the St. Dominic science department

Q. How did your previous job as a firechief impact your teaching career?

A: My specialty in the fire service was always training firefighters, but that was adults, where here I have high school kids, so that's always kind of been my forte. As fire chief, I didn't do a whole lot of face to face training, like you do in a classroom setting, but one of the achievements I'm pretty proud of is that I helped form the St Charles County Fire Academy. Plus, I taught on a regular basis at the Fire Academy too. Then the chance came here at St Dominic, and it's just been a wonderful place to work.

Q: How has it been working in the SDHS science department?

A: It’s been good, with a lot of different people. One interesting fact is, when I first started, Mrs. Juergensmeyer started with me. We both started the same year, and then she took off a number of years and now she's back. She's been back here for about 10 years now or so. So, that's kind of interesting.

Q: How do you feel about leaving St. Dominic?

A: This is the best job I've ever had, so I'm really going to miss this place. But I've been looking forward to retirement also. I've been working part time for the last two years, so that's a nice transition into it. Plus I haven't coached softball or baseball for about three years now, so that's also kind of helped with the transition into retirement too. So, I think I'm ready, but this has been a wonderful place to work.

Q: What is your favorite sport you have coached?

A: Well, I love both baseball and softball, and I have coached freshman football–I did that years ago with Dr. Matusziak–but baseball and softball are running head to head. I think baseball has kind of been my sport all my life. I played in college, but then when I first started coaching softball, I really enjoyed being around the girls, and they are always very motivated. Baseball's always been my sport, but softball, I really love, too.

Q: How has working at St. Dominic impacted you?

A: It's made me closer to my faith life and made me understand that individuals go through different plights and that we all bear different crosses. The students do have a lot going on in their lives, and sometimes they have a hard time understanding that. Over the years I didn't really realize that, but now I realize that kids have a lot going on, and they're dealing with a lot, so we have to be sympathetic to that and understand that.

Q: What do you plan to do after retiring from St. Dominic?

A: My wife and I talked about taking a trip to Europe later on, but right now we're taking care of my father in law, who has been having some health issues. I am also a part owner of a piece of a duck club that I spend a lot of time at on my days off and I still spend a lot of time babysitting my grandkids.

Q: What will you miss about working at St. Dominic?

A: I will miss the kids and the people I've worked with, no doubt about it. I look forward to teaching every period, all the classes are just a little bit different. That's what makes it exciting.

COACH KOELLER INDUCTED INTO THE SOCCER HALL OF FAME

Behind every successful sports team, is an outstanding coach. For St. Dominic’s varsity soccer program, this couldn’t be more true. On February 27th, St. Dominic soccer coach Greg Koeller was inducted into the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame.

Although it was no surprise to the St. Dominic community, Coach Koeller couldn’t believe he won such an honorable award.

“To be entered into the Hall of Fame isn’t the reason I do what I do. I never even thought about it,” Coach Koeller said.

Koeller not only earned this honor due to his outstanding coaching skills, but also his devotion and commitment to the sport of soccer. He has coached at St. Dominic for 23 years, and has won 11 State Championships–five in boys and six in girls, with three undefeated seasons. Additionally, during his 23 years at St. Dominic he has collected over 800 wins along with earning the High School of the Year Award, and being inducted into the Coaches Hall of Fame.

Although Koeller has had a very successful coaching career, he continues to give credit to his athletes. Soccer is a highly competitive sport, and playing at the varsity level is both an honor and a challenge.

“Even though my name is on the plaque it's shared by many people.”

He recognizes that soccer is more than a sport, and that being inducted into the Hall of Fame was made possible by his athletes' companionship and commitment.

Koeller’s induction into the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame is a reflection of his tremendous impact both on and off the field. He has grown the Crusader’s soccer program in numerous ways, and he will continue to do so into the future.

BUILT FOR LEGENDS:

New Baseball-Softball Stadium Honors the Past and Ignites the Future

This spring, St. Dominic completed its latest campus renovations by transforming its previous softball and baseball fields into a state-of-the-art stadium. The upgrade includes permanent stadium lighting to ensure the baseball and softball teams can host double header and evening games as needed, as well as converting the previous field’s natural surface into an all-weather fully turfed field.

“With six baseball and softball teams between our Varsity, JV and Freshman teams, the new stadium lighting and allweather turf field is a huge help for scheduling–especially during the spring months which are prone to rainouts and delays,” said Athletic Director Kevin Roberts.

“It’s raised the standard for our program, and it’s building a culture of pride, hard work, and tradition that will impact Crusader baseball for generations to come.”

create. It’s raised the standard for our program, and it’s building a culture of pride, hard work, and tradition that will impact Crusader baseball for generations to come.”

In an effort to elevate both player and fan experiences, stadium renovations also included new dugouts, backstop netting, bullpens and batting cages, as well as a press box, digital scoreboard, sound system and stadium seating for spectators.

“The new stadium is truly transformational for our program,” said head baseball coach Cie Arell. “It’s not just a beautiful facility, it’s a place that inspires our players to invest even more in themselves and in each other. Since opening the stadium, our guys have been asking to stay after practice,

Head softball coach Noah Duncan said, “Our new stadium will have such a positive impact as a whole. The players that are currently in our softball program can’t wait to play on that field–they are so excited. In addition to our current players, I feel confident that this state-of-the-art facility will draw players to our school.

If you're a softball or baseball player who is trying to decide what school to attend and you see that stadium, you’d have to be excited about the opportunity to play four years there.”

COACH NORM OCHSNER FIELD

REDEDICAT ION Ceremony

Named in honor of St. Dominic’s beloved social studies teacher and long-time baseball and softball coach Norm Ochsner, a field rededication was held at Coach Norm Ochsner Field in May. The ceremony was well attended by Ochsner’s family and friends, including Carol (Schramm) Ochsner ’56, as well as other proud supporters of the recent major gift initiative.

Along with the baseball and softball stadium improvements, the $4.1 million major gift initiative also included adding nearly 150 campus parking spots to accommodate St. Dominic’s growing student population, as well as expanding restroom facilities at Crusader Stadium to improve fan and visitor experiences. Both of these renovations were completed in 2024 as part of St. Dominic’s five year strategic plan.

“We’re truly grateful for the generosity and support of our St. Dominic community,” said President Jim Welby. “The parking lot expansion and athletic facility improvements we’ve been able to complete over the past year demonstrate our commitment to excellence as we continue to grow and adapt to meet the needs of our students and our families.”

CRUSADER FAMILY TREE THE BATHE FAMILY

Martin ‘84 and Sue ‘84 Bathe have been proud Crusaders at St. Dominic, since they first set foot on campus as students.

Martin was a standout athlete, playing soccer, basketball and intramural sports all four years of high school. He was also on the track team for three years, where he ran the 100M, threw shot put and set a varsity record for discus.

Sue was very involved as well as a member of the student council, where she served as class secretary and class treasurer. She also played intramural sports and was a soccer cheerleader, bat girl and volleyball player.

“We’ve met some of our best friends at St. Dominic… people we’re still in touch with to this day.”

After graduating from St. Dominic in 1984, Martin and Sue both attended college at (Southwest) Missouri State University. They returned to the O’Fallon area and became parishioners at St. Paul, where they remain active to this day. Martin and Sue recently celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary.

Together Martin and Sue have three children: Alex ‘10, Madeline ‘12 and Sophia ‘14. When it came time to choose a high school, St. Dominic was the obvious choice. “St. Dominic is everything I’d want out of high school,” said Martin.

Mary "Sue" (Griesenauer) Bathe '84
Martin Bathe '84

As alumni parents, Martin and Sue reignited their involvement with St. Dominic. Sue served as a member of the Auction Committee in 2007 and 2008, back when it was known as Cornucopia. Martin served on the St. Dominic Board for 10 years, coached feeder teams, and kept statistics for both varsity football and varsity girls basketball.

Outside of their presence at St. Dominic, Martin and Sue own and operate MR Bathe Electric Company, which was founded in 1995. Martin is the third generation in the family business, with the Bathes’ son Alex following close behind. The company has and continues to service all of St. Dominic’s electrical and low voltage needs, including playing a significant role in the construction of the Fallon Family Center, the Amy Dickherber Performing Arts Center, the Wies Family Center for the Sciences and the new Trades Building scheduled to open this fall.

“It’s been neat to see the transformation at St. Dominic over the years–all of the facility updates and campus improvements, as well as the top-notch athletic programs and great education provided by the faculty. It all encourages growth, drawing new students and families into our community.”

While Martin and Sue have been instrumental leaders at St. Dominic, they aren’t the only ones in their family with close ties to our school. Sue’s parents, Ralph '58 and Doris (Eisenbath) '58 Griesenauer were both St. Dominic graduates, and Sue is one of six Griesenauer Crusaders including her siblings: Jan ‘80, Shari ‘81, Jeanne ‘86, Holly ‘90 and Kenny ‘96. Martin’s brother, Ryan '88, also graduated from St. Dominic. The pair have had 11 nieces and nephews attend St. Dominic alongside their own children over the years, and as proud grandparents to six grandchildren under the age of six, there are possibly even more family Crusaders in their future!

Over the years, Martin and Sue have helped build many relationships (and many buildings!) for St. Dominic High School. We are grateful that they have always been and continue to be proud supporters of our community.

A true celebration of our extraordinary St. Dominic community

Six hundred guests—including 120 alumni, current parents, alumni parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, and friends of St. Dominic— attended the 37th Annual Evening of the Crusader Gala. The event raised a record-breaking $1.4 million in support of our students and this year’s Fund-A-Need: the Building Excellence Initiative.

Co-chaired by Kirsten Mulvaney and Chrissy Mollet ‘88 (pictured top left), the gala committee worked tirelessly to put on an exceptional event. The gala was a resounding success thanks to the selfless generosity of countless donors, volunteers and our entire school community.

This year, we honored two incredible families who have collectively changed the future of St. Dominic High School: Brent and Elaine Witte and Tim and Charla Mueller.

BRENT AND ELAINE WITTE

Brent and Elaine, parents of Harrison ‘18, Addison ‘19 and Jameson ‘20, have made serving our Church and our school a way of life for their family. Brent served on the St. Dominic Advisory Board from 2015-2021 and was instrumental in the campus growth that occurred during that time. The Wittes were also among the first to step forward with a major gift to support our “Called to Lead” Capital Campaign in support of the Wies Family Center for the Sciences. Their generosity has been an inspiration to many others.

“While we didn’t initially plan to become deeply involved, Cathy Fetter had other plans. What began as a single year of involvement turned into many; and for that we are grateful.”

TIM AND CHARLA MUELLER

Tim and Charla are parents to Madeline '17 (Evan) Thill, Kennedy ‘21 and Michael ‘23. Charla has been a spirited advocate for St. Dominic in our community and an avid volunteer at our SDAA golf tournament and other St. Dominic events. Tim has served as Board Chair and Student Life Committee Chair, and was instrumental in leading the development of our current strategic plan. Though their children have graduated, they continue to be involved as proud supporters of St. Dominic, sharing their time, talents and treasures with our community.

“The faith-based education at St. Dominic has been a blessing to our entire family for the last twelve years. My only regret is that we didn’t get more involved sooner.”
