Letter from the Editor

It is hard to believe this school year will once again bring so many changes for us personally. I am a mother of four , two of whom are now officially college students. I had to read that sentence twice after I typed it. It just seems like yesterday that Trey was a toddler. I learned I was pregnant with his little sister Abby when he was just seventeen months old, and I was sick pretty much from the word go til I was six months pregnant with her. Trey was such a good boy. He went to bed at 8pm and I just simply laid him down and he would play til he fell asleep. We had bought our first home then in Georgia, and my husband worked long days for Southeastern Freight lines. So the continual sickness made our routine change. I began to rock Trey to sleep at night, from sheer exhaustion and it was a sweet treasured time. I had always sung to him from the moment he was born. I believe in the delivery room there is an archaic VHS Tape with me singing “Jesus loves me” to my new son. Then our song became a gospel song that I changed the words to. I had learned it when I was seventeen in youth choir. “I love you.” It became Trey’s song. I sang it to him almost daily. Just as Abby’s song was “You are so beautiful to me, “ Colton’s song was “You are my sunshine.” Ryan’s song was again, “I love you” , because he didn’t like “You are my sunshine”. it made him sad, he said to think of someone taking him away from me. (He was three when he told me this.) On this one night that I have in mind, I sat rocking Trey. I was too exhausted to sing. My tummy hurt as little Miss Abby was already making her presence in our lives known. As I rocked and just held him close, gently patting his little back the sweet sound filled our space. The song I had sung to him, over and over, as he ate, as he fell asleep, when he was tearful or afraid, tired or hungry, to soothe him, calm him, just let him know his mother was there, he now lay with his little head on my shoulder, singing it back to me.

Trey Duncan 6 weeks old

“I love you. I love you. From the bottom of my heart, to the depths of my soul. I love you. I really do. I love you.” Trey sang those words in his little hoarse whisper. The song of love from a mother to her child was now the song of love from a child to his mother. I cried.Y’all know I am a crier. I was a young mother only about 23 when he sang me this song. I can still remember the little white luvs diaper, the “Alabama” T-shirt he was wearing to sleep in as I rocked and listened to him sing to me. It’s hard to believe that little boy is twenty years old. That he is a junior in college and majoring in music and physics. It is hard to believe he is getting close to the age I was, when I held him in my arms and listened to him sing a love song to me. He is a grown man. I watched the Jungle Book this weekend with Ryan and Colton. Mowgli had decided to leave the family of wolves who had raised him to keep them safe and the mother wolf said to him, “Never forget you are mine, mine to me. No matter where you go or who you will be, you will always be my son.” I cried. Because it made me think of all three of my boys. It also made me think of my mama and her sons and all of you who are the mother of boys. Life brings change but one thing that never changes is how much we love our children: how much we continue to be proud and yes, how much we worry. For those young mothers, cherish the moments, write them down. Share those moments with your sons. For those of us who are in transitioning stages , let’s try to remember those moments. I hope to make many more of these moments. Ryan and Colton are still making those moments with us. Abby is forging her own path and learning how to be her own woman as well.

Trey Duncan High School Senior year

I pray for each of you and your children that the 2016-2017 school year will be one of blessings and great accomplishments for all of us. To a mother, a son is never a fully grown man; and a son is never a fully grown man until he understands and accepts this about his mother. -Unknown

The Gail Gingrey Team will Treat

You like Family!

In Aiken, SC the term “real estate” and the name Gail Gingrey are almost synonymous. Gail first got her real estate license in 1976 when her husband, Bill, and his brother Phil opened a construction company in Aiken, and needed someone to “sit” at the houses they were building. By 1985 Gail had become so successful in real estate that she with co-owners opened their own company, The Real Estate Shoppe. For the next twenty years Gail and her partners, built their business. In 2002, after many overtures, Gail agreed to merge her company with EG Meybohm of Meybohm Realtors. Gail, with the help of her two licensed assistants Bethanne Farrell and Amy King, continues helping folks find their dream home in Aiken. Bethanne, a New Yorker who moved to Aiken in 1990, joined The Gail Gingrey Team in 2006. Amy King, a native of eastern North Carolina, is married to her high school sweetheart, Bill King, who is also a licensed Realtor. Both women enjoy shar6

ing their love for Aiken and all of its Southern charm with other newcomers. Gail explained, “I could not accomplish all I need to do for our clients without my team of Bethanne and Amy. We are available 24-7 with genuine, honest service and we treat our clients like family. ” Their tagline is “Together, Energized And Motivated!” and they work hard to live up to that ideal as a TEAM. Gail consistently provides the highest level of service to her clients and to her fellow REALTORS. We all know that if you want a job done well, you need to give it to a busy person. Gail is never too busy to offer advice or lend a helping hand to another agent. Through the years, she has unselfishly mentored many who have become successful agents too, and they are grateful to her for sharing her expertise. In the years since, that site-agent working for her husband has become the well-known and highly respected real estate dynamo that she is today. Her knowledge of her industry, her many years of experience, her calm exterior and her wonderful southern charm are traits that Gail is known for. She’s frequently described as knowledgeable, professional, honest and caring.

If you ask her how she has been so successful in both her personal and professional life, Gail is quick to give God the credit. Blessed with good values, excellent people skills, a committed work ethic, an entrepreneurial spirit along with a loving husband and family, Gail has made the most of those God-given attributes. When asked what advice she had for other professional women on how to balance work and personal obligations, she replied, “Don’t lose sight of what is most important - God, family and then business.”

“Together, Energized & Motivated”

Gail and Bill will celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary this December. Their family today includes their two children, Doug and Alison; five grandchildren, Brian Will, Danny, Kaitlyn and Megan and even a great-grandchild, Brody. Just as they were with their children, Gail and Bill are huge supporters of their grandchildren and are always there on the sidelines, cheering them on in whatever they are doing. Gail Gingrey has won almost every award you can think of, multiple times - from Meybohm’s Southside Agent of the Year, Meybohm’s The Best of the Best Meybohm’s President’s Club Meybohm’s Outstanding Customer Service award & South Carolina Platinum Agent of the Year. Real Estate is an extremely competitive business. You don’t win these kinds of awards year after year unless you are exceptionally good at what you do. Obviously, Gail Gingrey is one of the best!

Whether you have a home to sell, or are looking for a home in Aiken, do yourself a favor and call The Gail Gingrey Team at 803 644-1724 for Gail Gingrey; 803 644-1751 for Bethanne Farrell or 803 644-1763 for Amy King. They will treat you like family - and that is very good! Gail and husband Bill

Ashley Dean, co-owner of Salon Tralé and Studio South in Aiken, said her salons are different from other shops in that, “Our main objective when we decided to open Salon Tralé was to offer an environment where stylists could work without negativity and drama. We do our best to make sure that our stylists can enjoy the time that they spend working, because that's where we typically spend the majority of our time. We expect that they give their clients the same enjoyable experience while they are in our salons as well.”

In a world that is full of drama (and my house, with four kids, is never short on that!), it is nice to hear that there is a company out there that recognizes that we need less drama in this world! Ashley told me that Salon Tralé’s mission statement says: “(We) ensure that every client is treated with kindness, patience, and compassion while providing services which help them feel more beautiful and more positively about themselves.” Her personal attitude echoes the same sentiment, “I'm a hairstylist and Redken Certified Haircolorist and I'm the co-owner of all three salons. But more than that, my job is to make women feel more beautiful and to encourage them in any way that I can.” Ashley began her journey into this business several years ago. Her boyfriend and business partner, Chris Drumming, have been together for a couple of years, but they have known each other since graduating Aiken High School together in 2002. He returned from Japan, where he was stationed with the US Navy and they reconnected in 2012. They opened their first salon, Salon Tralé, on Laurens Street in August 2013; bought their second location, Studio South, on Pine Log Road, in April 2015; and the third location, Spa Tralé, is scheduled to open in the summer of 2016. Its location is in the Village of Woodside. With Ashley and Chris’s booming success, you would think that they would not have a lot of free time. Ashley told me that her favorite thing to do is spend time with her family and friends. “What we actually do in that time doesn't really matter, as long as we're together.” She also told me that because she has a great staff of stylists and managers, her salons run smoothly even when she and Chris aren’t there. So they get to attend her daughters’ school events and extra-curricular activities – and that truly is an amazing thing to be able to do in this day and age. Ashley’s girls – Ariana, 14 and Jayla, 8 – have already learned a lot from their mom and Chris. The advice she will pass down to her children? “The same advice my parents gave me; with determination they can do absolutely anything they set their minds on doing.” She also told me that she tries to teach them how to give back. “I believe giving back can be anything that you do for someone else without expecting anything in return. Donating time, or money, cooking a meal, or even something as simple as offering words of encouragement. Being kind to others may not always make you wealthier, but it can certainly bring you a lot of joy.” With working and staffing three salons, I asked Ashley what she felt would be the best advice to give a new stylist. Her answer was to “Always be open to learning from others. Work in a salon that wants to help you learn more than what you were taught in school, and don't be discouraged if you're not busy right away. Do your best work on every client who sits in your chair, and they will build your clientele for you, but it takes time. Don't give up!” Obviously, Ashley didn’t give up! So, if you want a little encouragement, a new “do”, and a non-drama-filled atmosphere, visit Salon Tralé; you can even make an appointment from their Facebook page! Wishing the best of luck to Ashley and Chris on their new location!

“There are so many ways to help others, so I try to help others by doing the best I can in every aspect of life; whether it's just listening when someone is having a bad day or lifting their spirits by making them look and feel great.” Sheila Haldezos, owner of The Beauty Shop on Pine Log Road in Aiken, is a very positive and upbeat person. One of the first things that she mentioned to me is that her salon is all about family. “In our salon, we are one big happy family. We all cut up and joke around when we need a laugh, or cry together when we need to cry. We also want our clients to feel right at home. Some might call us witty or sarcastic, or maybe even crazy (in a good way!) at times. We joke around and say we offer free entertainment with our haircuts!” Sheila has been the owner of The Beauty Shop since October of 2015, but it has been in business for more than 18 years. As with most business owners, she has to balance her home and work life, but she says her clients are wonderful in allowing her to have time with her family. Sheila and her husband, Patrick, have a lovely daughter, Abigail, who is almost two. They live in Aiken – in fact, they have been part of the Aiken community for their whole lives. She proudly says that she and Patrick were high school sweethearts; they went to Aiken High together. After high school, Sheila studied cosmetology at Lacy Cosmetology School locally. When she does have some time off, she enjoys “spending time with my husband and daughter. We enjoy camping at the lake and beach but as long as we are together we are happy.” That’s what life is all about – spending time together. Sheila’s favorite quote is also one of the favorites of many of you, "Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away." While I was interviewing Sheila for this article, one of my questions was about the best advice she will give Abigail as she grows. It is great advice and I share this with my children as well. “Always follow your dreams. You never know what you are capable of unless you try - so don't let anyone tell you otherwise. But most importantly, no matter what, mommy and daddy will always be here for you.” Sheila followed her own advice – she is following her dream of owning her own salon and enjoying the experience of being her own boss. Sheila says that the four stylists in her salon work very well together; other than laughing and joking around, they do their best to accommodate their clients, even at the last minute. They also believe in giving back to the Aiken community by sponsoring local events and participating in fundraisers. And, as with any smart business owner, Sheila is always looking to expand her work family. She says to anyone that might want to pursue a similar career, “If Cosmetology is your passion then pursue it. You won’t be a success overnight, but with hard work, patience and dedication, you will succeed and never feel that you work a day in your life.” I believe that that sentiment applies with any career or dream! Beauty is only skin deep; we have all heard this phrase. Real beauty comes from within, of course. But many times, looking good also makes us feel good. Not just on a special occasion, but every day. And if you visit Sheila and her staff at The Beauty Shop, you will not only look good but you will feel good with their fun and family atmosphere!

Theresa Brown is the Owner/Manager of Gallery J and proud of carrying on the family tradition her late mother, Joyce Hogan, began in 1978. In 1983, Joyce moved the shop to its current location in The Alley. Theresa began working as Gallery J’s Business Manager in 2005, so Joyce could concentrate on the part of the business she loved best. Theresa had worked in an environmental testing laboratory for 15 years before taking a break to spend time with her family. The call from her mother provided a welcome new direction for her. Theresa commented, “One thing that makes us unique is our longevity. Thirty three years in one location is a long time, but more than that I believe my Mother’s respect for and dedication to her clients inspired the kind of loyalty that sees a business through./// At Gallery J we have always tried to provide a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, where our clients feel welcome and comfortable. “One of the biggest challenges has been finding a well-qualified staff that works well together. It takes a very special group of people to work cooperatively, especially as independent contractors. I can’t say enough good things about the women we have here now. They’re a wonderful group with many years of experience, cutting edge skills, and a lot of talent. I'm very grateful to have such terrific stylists.” The staff includes Brooke Battisto (803 645-8859) who came to the salon in 2003. She left and worked in Charlotte, NC and Pointe Vedra Beach, FL. When she moved back to Aiken, she came straight back to Gallery J and has been there for almost twelve years. Gayle Novak (845 489-7921) came to Gallery J from New York almost 2 years ago. Gayle has extensive education in color and cuts and 36 years’ experience in New York salons. The first year she worked with Gallery J, she went back to NY every 6 weeks to take care of her clients there. Gayle has worked as a master colorist with Aveda, Goldwell, and Paul Mitchell. Although Dori Turner Wright (803 221-1238) and Holly Edwards are in their first year with Gallery J, Theresa observed, “It feels like they’ve been with us for years. They just fit right in. Dori has been in the industry since 2004 and also worked in New York City. She specializes in cuts, color, and design. She has a great sense of humor and is a very positive person.” Holly Edwards ( 803 295-2970), an Aiken native, was voted 2015 AIKEN’S CHOICE BEST HAIRSTYLIST! “I am truly blessed to have such wonderful clients and talent. I love what I do and do what I love! Seeing my clients smile when I am done with their hair brings me so much joy. I absolutely love Gallery J and I am so happy to be a part of the salon,” Holly explained. Bre McNeely (803 617-8551) is the most recent addition. She came highly recommended by Holly Edwards, and will allow them to accept more walk-in business, which is very important with the increased pedestrian traffic downtown. Continuing that “family tradition”, Theresa’s daughter Anna also works at the salon. She will be attending cosmetology school in June to become a licensed esthetician. Theresa said, “Anna is very talented in makeup application and works well with the other stylists for special events and wedding parties. I anticipate adding skin care services when she graduates.” “No discussion of the Gallery J staff would be complete without mentioning Ricky Gibson, who worked with my Mother for 20 years. He still stops by to see us,” Theresa remarked. Gallery J is a full service salon. Call Gallery J (803 648-9273) or one of their exceptional stylists to schedule an appointment today.

Deborah Birmingham can give you a

Fresh Perspective on your Home By Carol A. Ryall

Originally born in Illinois, I subsequently lived in 12 different states and 23 different places during my childhood. My father was an engineer and frequently transferred to different sites. My mother and grandmother put all of their energies into making sure their families’ homes were clean, organized, and that wonderful meals were prepared every day. The result of their efforts provided a home which was pretty much like the Donna Reed Show. My grandmother often paid me with quarters to dust the legs of her Duncan Phyfe formal cherry dining room furniture and china cabinet. Needless to say, all of that imprinted upon me. When I was eleven, I talked myself into a job at an exclusive boutique in Orange, California. I believe it is so important for children to learn to earn their own money. Elbow grease cannot be bought; it is taught at an early age and it makes for a healthy self-respect and success and stability of finances in the future. I married and in 1990 moved to Aiken. In 2000, I started Fresh Perspectives Cleaning. As the stay-at-home mother of 3 boys and a set of boy/girl twins, I also needed to help with the family income. Being able to choose my own hours and work around the children’s schedules was a big advantage. As time went on the business grew from being just myself and one helper to today where Fresh Perspectives Cleaning has multiple teams of hard working, dedicated, and conscientious employees cleaning daily and nightly in homes, business, churches, and new construction across the greater Aiken area. Fresh Perspectives’ success begins with hiring the right people, setting clear employee expectations, coaching and encouraging our workers to greet each day optimistically while establishing positive relationships with our clients. Many of our employees have been with us several years. We try to surround ourselves with people who love their work and greet each day with the zesty appetite of a gourmet about to

sample a new recipe. We’re licensed, bonded, insured, and members of the Aiken Chamber of Commerce, and Angie’s List. I am now remarried to my wonderful husband and best friend, Jon Birmingham, who is an independent insurance claims adjuster. We have seven children and eight grandchildren between us. We love our extended and gregarious family and expect it to continue to continue to grow with 3 children not yet married. If you come to our house today you may find tricycles and baby dolls throughout the landscape of our hallways. That’s because there is a passion here to juggle all the joyful moments with those growing grandkids complete with their various heights marked on the kitchen door frame. My parents, Bob and Dorothy Scott, whom I love dearly, also live in Aiken. I have a sister who lives in Florida and a brother who lives in Colorado. I have a passion for gardening, playing the mandolin, and making music with my husband who is a guitarist. Our friends frequently ask if they can come hear us play. We jokingly tell them we are appearing nightly in our living room. We have also been known to play on King Street in Charleston and look forward to doing that more often in the future. It’s been a wonderful experience serving the greater CSRA, establishing lasting relationships that bridge over many years. We look forward to continuing to provide the service that reaches out with helping hands. Hearing the appreciative comments from our busy clients makes it all worthwhile. We offer a variety of services from commercial, residential to new construction and welcome new clientele. We offer free in-home estimates and you can find us on the web at www.freshperspectivescleaning.com or call us at 803-439-6318. www.aikenwomanonline.com

Working with Thoroughbreds is The Life for Jill Davies

By Carol A Ryall

C'est la Vie is a French phrase which translates “This is the life.” That's also the name of Jill Davies’ business and it's probably pretty appropriate. Jill started riding horses at eight years of age and, very shortly of course, wanted a horse of her own. When she was twelve, her parents allowed her to live in Bermuda with cousins who had horses and rode every day, thinking that would cure her of "horse fever." It didn't work. She came back more committed to horses than ever. For high school, Jill’s parents sent her to an all-girls school, which she hated. She begged her parents to look for a school that allowed horses to be boarded, so she could have her own horse at school. They found the Grier School in Pennsylvania and she loved it. From there her life has been a whirlwind of riding (both singly and as part of a team,) showing and training horses in locations from Pennsylvania to Florida to Vermont to Hawaii to Aiken. While living in Hawaii, she started wanting to show horses again. Looking for a location on the mainland, she found her farm in Aiken and fell in love with both the property and the area. She wanted a horse-centric community somewhere rural, quiet with mild winters. Aiken was all of that. One of the attractions of showing horses again, was her desire to show Thoroughbreds. As Jill put it, “You have to have a relationship with a Thoroughbred. They’re so intelligent and intuitive; they can almost read your thoughts."

In the 1970s most racehorses were Thoroughbreds, referred to as cold-blooded horses. In the 1980s warm-blooded horses were imported from Europe and became the "favored” breeds. Now, however, Thoroughbreds are again being appreciated for their unique qualities. Horse shows have added new divisions exclusively for Thoroughbreds. There are incentives available to own former Thoroughbred racehorses and retrain them to participate in Barrel Races, in Dressage and other events. Retraining Thoroughbreds is just one of the many things Jill does on her farm. There is a boarding facility with a 10 stall barn on sixty acres of land. There are six large paddocks, and a 100' by 200' sand riding arena. The barn is equipped with rubber-matted floors, automatic waterers, a fly spray system and a large tack room. Jill, who laughingly describes herself as "the chief mucker, feeder and trainer”, supplies the grain, hay and bedding, does the turn outs and brings the horses back in. An unfinished apartment in the barn will eventually house on-site handlers. Thirty acres will eventually be a hunter-type course which Jill describes as having "... coops, gates, country rock walls, picket fences and ditches - all the fun stuff you rarely get to do anymore!" Other plans include covering the existing arena and building an even larger uncovered arena and opening the hunt field to the public. Ms. Davies commented, “Over the past 40-some years, I have taught three year olds to seventy-six year olds how to ride. I know how to get my point across in a way that is easily understood, both to riders and horses. I don't pamper my students, though. I train them in old-fashioned horsemanship. They get a complete education. "

A FABULOUS SHOP WITH A TROPICAL FLAIR By Carol A Ryall

Down the way, where the nights are gay, and the sun shines daily on the mountaintop...there weretwo ladies whoowned clothing stores on two tropical islands.Over thirty years ago, Gina Greer, who owned a boutiqueon Antigua and Sharon Marosek, who owned twoshops on St. Thomas, met and became friends. Life goes on, as it has a way of doing, and they lost touch with each other.Sixteen years ago, Sharon left St. Thomas and moved to Arizona.Eight years ago, Gina moved to Aiken, drawn both bythe horse community and education opportunities for her daughter.

When you walk into Epona, enjoy the dazzling array of colors and textures in the fashions, jewelry, handbags, hats, and the wide variety ofaffordableBoho-Chic clothing. In addition, there are prints, artwork, sweaters and shawls for these cool months, as well asa collection of wine-inspired gifts, and a witty selection of greeting cards and signs, emphasizing tongue-in-cheek humor and wise, life truisms. Whether you are looking for yourself or a giftfor a friend, you are sure to find something unique and delectable at Epona.

Thanks to the wonders of social media, the two reconnected on Facebook. Sharon came to visit Ginaa couple of times and fell in lovewith Aiken and its beautiful downtown area. Fifteen months ago, Sharon moved to Aikento open a new boutique, Epona, inpartnership with Gina and start a new adventure. Each of these cosmopolitan entrepreneurs has been in one phase or another of the clothing and jewelry business for over thirty years. From designing, manufacturing, importing, wholesale and retail; between them, they have done it all. Gina travels to Bali annuallyto oversee the designof the hand-batiked fabrics and styles for her private label clothing line, Equi-style, which is manufacturedon the island of Baliandis,of course, available at Epona.

Sharon commented, “We love bringing colorful, fun and truly affordable fashion choices to the women of Aiken. It’s so rewarding to see how a simple accessory or a scarf that is the perfect shade can give a woman a pick-me-up and leave her smiling. Retail therapy doesn’t have to be expensive! It frustrates me to hear Aiken residents say that downtown Aiken doesn’t have affordable shopping. They just haven’t found us yet! ”Another interest both women share, and which endeared Aiken to them, is a love of all things equine. Their shop, Epona, is named after a Celtic goddess who was the protector of horses. They are both involved with horse rescue and fundraising. Gina hosts the Foalapaloo-

zaevery April (On April 16ththis year) for Nurse Mare Foal Rescue and Sharon has been involvedwithraising the awareness of the plight of the American Mustang for years.Sharon concluded, “We’re at an age where we want to enjoy our lives –friends, family, good wine and causes dear to our hearts. Epona has pulled many friends together-someold, some new and some we haven’t met yet.” Epona is locatedat 137 Laurens Street, SW and is open Monday through Friday 10 am to 5:30 pm, and Saturdays 10 am to 5 pm. Stop by soon to meet Gina and Sharon and explore the treasure chest of wonders that is Epona.

Aiken Yoga has a Class to Suit Everyone Even Equestrians! By Carol Ryall

Sarah Acord

Sarah Acord has spent most of her adult life helping people have a happier, healthier life. After seventeen years working as an ICU, CCU and ER nurse, she moved her nursing license to an inactive status to open Aiken Yoga. Yoga is a complement to her other passion, which is horses. “Yoga provides the conditioning, core strength and mental clarity to be present with my horses,” she explained. Sarah and her husband Barry own Four Bay Farm. “Barry shares in my interests and helps out a lot,” she continued.

Sarah’s been practicing Yoga for eight years. She fell off of a young horse and broke three vertebrae in her back. With obesity prevalent in her family, after recovering she needed to do something to get her body back in shape and stay healthy. She tried running and working out at a gym and considered them both “…punishment.” She had tried Yoga previously and didn’t care for it, but the third time was the charm. It is her “…pleasure for life now.” According to Sarah, “You really have to do it yourself to feel in your own body how good it is. There is a starting point for everyone, no matter how old, how debilitated or out of shape you may be. You can do Chair Yoga. You can even do it in bed. Yoga is for everybody. “The main goals for most people will be to increase flexibility, strengthen your muscles, raise your awareness of your body and how it functions, and meditation. Depending on where you are and where you want to be physically, mentally and emotionally, yoga can help you in all of those areas.”

After seeing the benefits she was gaining from Yoga, Sarah took a weekend Yoga Instructor’s Certification course and started teaching Yoga classes in a gym. In 2010, she took a 200 hour Yoga Certification course, and bought Aiken Yoga in 2011. There are a wide variety of yoga styles or traditions. At Aiken Yoga, you can receive instruction in several of these. They also offer Barre classes taught by Jory Crost, Pilates classes with Catie Koman and a Meditation in Chair class with Mark Gould. There is a Functional Fitness Class, teaching you how to move in everyday life to avoid injury and improve your health. Sarah pointed out that as you get older it is extremely important to maintain your sense of balance, to avoid falls and the ensuing injuries which can be very detrimental to your health and quality of life. Combining her love of everything equestrian and Yoga, Sarah teaches a Yoga for Equestrians class on Mondays between twelve and one. (Monday is generally an off day for the riding stables and farms in the area.) Sarah explained, “Riders, especially show riders, need core strength, back strength, arm strength, balance, focus and concentration. Yoga can help with all of that. The poses are the same in the Equestrian class, we just concentrate on the ones most beneficial for riding.” Sarah, with Studio manager Alexandrea Kneece, and a variety of other instructors, offer a wide range of styles, personalities and modalities for you to choose from. Among the instructors available are Mark Folsom, Heather Peterson, Shelley Onderdonk, Elena Bradford, Suzanne Bremmer, Jessica Stover, Dana Rideout, Alley Lenst, Heather Mahan, Krissy Dopson Simmons. Located in downtown Aiken at 116 Pendleton Street, Aiken Yoga is the ideal place to go whether you are a newbie who just wants to try it out, or an experienced practitioner looking for a more challenging workout or to broaden their knowledge and learn a different type of Yoga. Dr. Cheryl Cummings...."Enhancing the Quality of Life One Step at a Time"! By Carol A. Ryall Dr. Cheryl Cummings knew from a very young age that she wanted to do something that helped people. Her first job after college was with the SC Department of Juvenile Justice, training citizens to mentor juveniles who were already on probation. This experience focused her desire to work with children and adolescents. After her first child was born, she went back to work for DJJ completing child assessments and evaluations on juveniles who had been charged with a crime. The courts used her recommendations in deciding the best course of action for each child. Dr. Cummings commented, “While I loved what I did at the time, I remember saying to myself, ‘There has got to be something else I can do to impact these children/families’ lives before they ever get to this point.’ I decided to go back to school to become a counselor, as my passion to help people before they got to the state of incarceration became paramount.” Dr. Cummings is now the owner of Stairway Counseling Services. She explained, “I am a sole proprietor. However, I have two licensed interns who I supervise. These two interns are both phenomenal with at least 10 years of mental health experience. They have already worked in the field as a Master’s Level Clinician and have now started their journey to become licensed professionals.” Dr. Cummings continued, “When you’re in counseling, your therapist is your support system - directing you to a place of healing of the mind and soul. Our clients feel the warmth and inviting atmosphere immediately. While we treat symptoms, we also work on getting to the root of the problem. Our patients understand quickly that we are here to help and that they’re safe to be themselves when they enter those doors. It’s not easy to come to a stranger and began to open up about your life; to talk about things that you have never admitted to yourself or anyone else. So people entrust us to be able to listen with respect, compassion and genuine care in a non-judgmental environment. We do that!”

Dr. Cummings observed, “One of my personal and professional frustrations is the negative stigma associated with mental illness or receiving mental health treatment/counseling. Mental Health America has a campaign that talks about B4Stage4. It compares mental illness treatment with cancer or heart disease treatment. You wouldn’t wait until cancer reached stage 4 to seek treatment. You detect it early and seek medical treatment for it right away. It should be the same with mental illness. Individuals and families need to understand the warning signs and symptoms and seek early treatment before it becomes debilitating.” When asked about the rewards of being a Counselor, Cheryl Cummings related this story, “There was a woman in her 50s who sought counseling because she was dealing with depression and a chronic illness. In counseling, she was able to heal from some childhood issues that she had buried so deeply that they had begun to control aspects of her life and marriage. She was then able to share with her husband what happened in her childhood. That one conversation gave him the strength and courage to be able to open up and be released from the hurt, pain, shame, and guilt that he had been holding on to for years as the result of a childhood related trauma as well. That moment was EPIC for me as a counselor, because it allowed me to see that when one person in the relationship healed, it opened the door for another person to begin their healing process.” Located at 306 Laurens Street, Suite D in Downtown Aiken, Stairway Counseling Service’s website is http:// www.stairwaycounseling.com. God Is Sovereign In the last few weeks I have had the difficult task of getting brutally honest with myself and with God, and in turn He lovingly set me straight. The truth is I found myself in an emotional and spiritual low spot. I noticed it was work to do the things I like to do, and near impossible to do the things I call work. I fell behind on schedules and deadlines and became increasingly discouraged. My heart just felt sad. I chalked it up to part of the grieving process since I had recently lost a dear Aunt. This is where the brutal honesty came in... I have not just been upset about the death of a loved one, I have be sick in heart over the unrest and uncertainty in our nation, the terrorist attacks that have taken innocent lives all over the world, immorality and drugs that are destroying our families. My list of disappointments and concerns went on and on. David said in Psalms 33:4,“I sought the Lord and he heard me and delivered me from all my fears. I believe the Lord is doing the same thing for me. He showed me that fear and discouragementhadcomeintoheartandthat I was losing my faith. Not my faith in Christ as my savior, but in my Heavenly Father as a sovereign God. “
