Beautiful Places to See; Explore SC 23 Interested in a local day trip? Read a little further. We think we have the perfect solution. Maybe you would like to “unplug” and take a journey along SC 23 to see and absorb the beauty of miles and miles of peach blossoms in the spring, cotton bolls in the fall, and architectural beauty, locally owned businesses, history and charm all year round.

The towns that you will travel through are Batesburg-Leesville, Monetta, Ridge Spring, Ward, Johnston,(Peach Capital of the World), Edgefield, (Home of Ten Governors), and Modoc. Most have park and walk shopping; some don’t even have traffic lights.

With less than fifty miles of road along the corridor of SC 23, the humongous amount of history, culture, century plus homes and store fronts, shops, restaurants, recreational places, libraries, museums, and Bed and Breakfast Inns is incredible. It will almost blow your mind. Seven small towns, some smaller than others, filled with charm and hospitality that one seldom encounters along the highways and byways woven into the busy lifestyle that is so prevalent today. Come along on this journey to find many places to explore, shop, dine, play and learn. We like to say “Beautiful places to see; explore SC 23.” History states that this is a corridor that George Washington travelled and rested while on his Southern Tour of the United States. https://www.facebook.com/ExploreSC23 There is nothing like following in the footsteps of our nation’s very first president.

History buffs can uncover some info on George Washington or their own genealogy. There are thirty plus historical markers along this corridor as well as numerous cemeteries and old churches. You will find libraries, museums, and many places of interest. Many of the store fronts are built with handmade and air dried bricks from the mid to late 1800’s. Each of the seven towns has a rich history of its own. There are diners, café’s, restaurants, and produce stands with sandwiches, etc. in most of the towns and amazing Ice Cream at a Roadside Café in Monetta. You will find a variety of antique shops, artisan shops, specialty shops, art centers, garden shops, clothing shops and more, all of which are modern and locally owned business.

Coming from Lexington, you would drive Hwy 1 towards Batesburg—Leesville and bear right onto SC 23 in front of Oswald Lumber. Almost immediately you will begin to see the old homes and encounter locally owned business along the way. With the ex-

camping, fishing, boating, kayaking, water skiing, hiking and picnicking. This is also home to Modoc Speedway for those who love the sport of racing. Festivals abound in each town, so you will want to check their individual websites for information on these. The one event that runs the entire length of SC 23 is the Peach Tree 23 Yard Sale held the first Friday and Saturday of June every year. This is a don’t want to miss event. www.peachtree23.com It is worth the effort to take the time to explore SC 23 and all it has to offer. Please note that some of the shops are only

open Thursday through Saturday, so check before heading out. Most all of the businesses have websites or Face Book pages. It is advisable to check these for their hours of operation as they differ from business to business. So what are you waiting for? It’s time to hit the road and explore the gems that await those who dare to Explore SC 23. Come by chance; you’ll return by choice. Aiken Antiques & Uniques Something for Everyone By Deena C. Bouknight The owners of Aiken Antiques & Uniques, which opened last fall, have spent a good portion of their lives developing an “eye” for distinct finds. Each has his or her own process regarding the hunt for just the right items that can be blended into one of the many visually pleasing vignettes throughout the 7,000-squarefoot store on the south side of Aiken in Centre South Shopping Center. Items range from very old to vintage to new. Kate Gamble, one of the three owners, honed her craft while working in New York and Connecticut. She grew up in the northeast and says she spent many years “collecting, re-purposing, and designing. I lean toward what is unusual and unique.

“The unique side of the business is where I shine. From carousel horses to carved art, my eye always goes to what’s fun,” adds Kate. “I also love to carry vintage pieces and specialize in hand-crafted items.” Both Matt Moore and Brett Sterling, also owners, grew up in Michigan, and have specialized in buying and selling a mixture of quality antique furnishings and collectibles. “We enjoy the thrill of finding and restoring antiques,” says Brett. A favorite time period for turn of the century – arts and crafts. Oak is a sought-after wood. (Brett is also a full-time horse trainer with Bridlewood Farms.) Overall, each owner contributes his or her expertise and style so that the end result is what articulates the store’s tagline: “Something to talk about.” “We met as vendors,” says Kate. “So we each have ideas of how we can bring something fresh and different to this world of treasure hunting. They may lean toward the classics and I toward the unusual and unique, but the blend of both worlds provides a store that truly has something for everyone.” Besides the owners, two other employees assist in the vast space that houses at least 40 vendors and consignors. Kate’s niece, Shelbie McDougall, is assistant manager. Customers visit Aiken Antiques & Uniques in search of traditional, industrial, artsy, valuable, funky, retro, and even modern items, according to Kate. Recently, the store has featured everything from a “beautiful” hand-painted armoire to a pair of elegant Chinese end tables to an interesting 19th century birthing chair. “We don’t want to pigeon hole ourselves with limitations where items are concerned,” points out Kate. However, clothes and tag-sale-type items are not sold. She says some customers just enjoy walking around, perusing, and sometimes reminiscing. Furthering the shopping experience is the Vintage Cafe, where WI-fi, coffee, tea, and “goodies” are provided free to patrons.

Kate is also a distributor for Dixie Belle Mineral Chalk paint, which she believes is one of the best available. “It’s also user friendly and cost effective,” she says. “I hold monthly painting workshops where customers and their friends can gather to have a great time and learn the art and technique of chalk painting.”

Brett says customers and/or designers are welcome to take items home, after leaving a deposit, to determine if they work in a residential, business, or retail space. The store also provides a layaway plan.

Plus, the store began hosting monthly fundraising events for local animal rescue organizations and other charities.

“Legal Planning is a gift you give yourself and your loved ones.

Knapp Law Firm By Deena C. Bouknight “Legal Planning is a gift you give yourself and your loved ones,” stated Attorney Linda Farron Knapp. “For you it is peace of mind and for your loved ones it gives financial stability thru asset preservation and a minimization of outside intervention in a time of family crisis.” As an estate and elder law planner with 25 years’ experience, Attorney Linda Farron Knapp understands that families are complicated. “Families are bound together first by genetics and blood, and then by shared experiences and expectations. And if you are lucky a plentiful amount of appropriate training, discipline, and love.” “Most families are far from perfect,” stated Knapp. “My fatherin-law, at 83, the youngest of 12, passed away recently in Florida from Parkinson’s disease. He was survived by his fourth wife and the children of his first marriage. It was a time of deep reflection on our own mortality and an opportunity to remember some choice family moments that still make one smile. Grands and great grands, children and their spouses came from Virginia, South Carolina, Florida and as far as Vermont. Sadly some old differences between siblings reared its ugly head, but my husband, the newly endowed patriarch, silenced the contention. With great bear hugs and words of love at parting the family passed into a new phase that will require regular communication to support and know one another. Thank goodness for Facebook!” quipped Knapp. “And Dad’s health care power of attorney, and Last Will and Testament expressing his desires and preneed cremation arrangements made a difficult time so much easier,” stated Knapp, “because we all knew what he wanted. Knapp explained that more than 80% of her clients have a child that got in trouble with the law, didn’t become financially independent, was a late bloomer or didn’t bloom at all, has a drug or alcohol issue, has mental or emotional problems, doesn’t handle money wisely or is outright addicted to gambling or spending, married badly and perhaps went through a divorce, committed adultery or is estranged from siblings and at least one parent. “We all have family planning particulars,” explained Knapp “and few of us would want to change the ones we have for those of someone else. Empathy is an important skill most elder law attorneys bring to their relationships with clients.” “I enjoy talking with my clients. I feel blessed to share bits and pieces of their dreams and to truly help by drafting the documents that let them plan for their loved ones and help them remain in control of their assets and environment as they age and deal with disability. It’s also my job to see beyond the client’s words, into their real needs and anticipate complications that could happen,

like the need for long term care. If a client’s most important goals are to be realized, we have to deal with the realities of life. Advance planning is always better then crisis planning, but sometimes I can do amazing things for families in crisis too.” “I tell my clients you are not a bad person if you can’t personally care 24/7 for a father with Alzheimer’s’. As long as you are not outright abandoning an aging parent or spouse I can support a client’s decision to seek professional or third party care. You still need to visit regularly and oversee care even if you live some distance away.” Knapp added, “I understand how critical jobs and benefits are to the next generation’s ability to one day retire at all. Often caregiver adult children sacrifice an enormous amount of time and energy and often should be recognized, sometimes with financial compensation. Using a Last Will and Testament or a trust I can help clients’ direct assets in a way that matches their goals. I create powers of attorney that protect clients from children who are not honest, not dependable and may even be abusive. Trusts are not only used for disabled children or the ultra-rich, but can protect assets for your spouse without the added costs of probate, make sure lands pass to children while funds are used first for your spouse’s long term care needs. And trusts can be used to provide for grandchildren until they are of age. The law can help with many family situations.” Attorney Knapp writes the column “Boomer Briefings” in the Mature Times section of the Aiken Standard. She is a member of the South Carolina chapter and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. She is also a member of the National Organization of Social Security Claimant Representatives. Knapp focuses her law practice on special needs planning, appealing Social Security disability claims, Medicaid and VA asset preservation planning, wills, irrevocable and living trusts, prenuptial agreements and senior divorces, guardian and conservatorships and all aspects of probate administration. The Knapp Law Firm is located at 149 Crepe Myrtle Court, Aiken, inside the Smith Group building. Call 803-541-7676 or 803335-1431 to schedule an appointment or to invite her to speak at your group or civic organization meeting of 15 or more. “The law is complicated and has changed quite a bit in the areas of law I practice over the last several years. I believe attorneys have a professional obligation to reach out to the public and give them insight into the areas of law that affect them personally, and to do that in layman terms,” explained Knapp. There is no charge for the 30-45 minute presentation on a subject of your group’s choice. Knapp does dozens of presentations a year and has a wealth of stories, and practical and specialized knowledge of the law to share. www.aikenwomanonline.com

Collette Ball

In her Own Words By Carol A. Ryall

Since the moment I heard of Collette Ball, I knew I wanted her to be on the first cover of Aiken Woman in 2017. Collette is a motivated entrepreneur who took an opportunity and turned it into a career that not only provides an income for her, but a way to be a blessing to her community as well. Insurance can be a complicated thing and finding someone you trust to provide you with that, even more difficult. That is why we wanted to introduce to you Collette Ball in her own words. W2W: After looking at some of your credentials on your website, I am curious about how and why you entered the insurance industry in 1990. Collette: I always knew that entrepreneurship was in my DNA. However, I did not know exactly what type of business I would eventually develop. I liked real estate very much and thought I would become a Realtor. I studied and passed the exam. However, I did not utilize my license since I was employed full time with USDA, newly married, and took care of our daughter Kimberlee. Pursuing real estate was not in my schedule due to my busy life style. Then in 1989, I was approached by a friend to consider the insurance business. He thought I would like it and informed me that State Farm was hiring women. I was not impressed with the sound of selling insurance. I kept my options open, and agreed to interview with a representative, and was immediately considered for an insurance agency. I became a State Farm Agent in March 1990, in Conway, SC, and I have been in the business for over 26 years. I love my career. I was an Agency Field Consultant with State Farm for five with years in South Bend, IN. This was my transition into management. I was soon promoted and moved to Woodbury, MN for a Zone Agency Administrative Assistant position. I was the liaison between the Agents and senior management. It was very rewarding and I learned so much by being on the other side of the business. W2W: What was your primary motivation at that time? Collette: Well, at first it was the income potential. I was excited about working in the private sector. I had previously worked for the federal government for 10 years, out of college, and wanted to make a life style change. Then, I realized it was an opportunity to build a business, build relationships, and grow with a strong and stable Fortune 500 Company. I wanted a career that I could count on and one that was conservative in nature. A company that aligned with my career plans. W2W: What appeals to you about the insurance industry? Collette: The relationships I have encountered over the years. I have a wonderful opportunity to meet people from all over. The business itself, is strategic, process-oriented, and unpredictable. I can walk in my office on any given day, and not know what will develop. I have to be prepared for my clients, and ready to act with compassion and knowledge when a problem arises for them. The insurance business is very rewarding, but yet, demanding and requires a unique understanding of the business from an internal and external prospective. It can be a very reactive in nature, if you allow it to be. I have focused on being pro-active to stay ahead of the curve. This is what my clients expects of me. W2W: What are the rewards for you personally? Collette: First, I love my career. I have been self-employed for 21 ½ years. It is rewarding to look back and see where I have been and how far I have come. It is especially gratifying to watch my team members bind together www.aikenwomanonline.com

15

and provide remarkable customer service to our clients. I truly have a dream team. Their knowledge, experience, and talents are hard to find today in the work force. It does not happen overnight, but with patience and interviewing the right people, it can happen. I am so thankful for my team. They are the ones that keep everything moving. I give them the credit for the success that has occurred in my business over the years.

Collette: We moved to Aiken in June 2004, from Woodbury, Minnesota. I certainly do not miss the cold winters in MN. The climate in Aiken is the right temperature. It is a beautiful community with wonderful, caring people. I am a native of SC, and from a small town called Smoaks, SC.

W2W: Share with our readers what services you offer?

Collette: The people. I see the development of projects, the engagement of the people, as we come together to serve one another. I am very active in the community where I meet very caring, and devoted people everywhere. I serve on the Aiken Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, I am a member of Aiken Rotary, where I previously served on the Board, Chaired the Scholarship committee. I served as a member on various committees, Past Commissioner for Aiken Technical College, Past Commissioner for the Human Affairs Commission, I am also a former member for USC-Aiken, Business Advisory Council. I am currently a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc., and an alumnus of the Notre Dame Club of Augusta.

Collette: At State Farm, we offer over 100 insurance and financial service products: Auto and Fire products, Life and Health, Annuities, Banking products-deposits and loans, (except mortgages). We have a mobile application that clients can access, the Drive Safe and Save device for auto insurance discounts, and online banking services. W2W: I have often found that I use the same companies and even laundry products as my mother because she was a smart woman who knew best. Are some of your client’s long term? Into a second generation? Yes, most of my clients are long term. The book of business I inherited when I moved here, consisted of clients who had been with State Farm since 1970. Thirteen years later, I have clients that are still with me that I personally know and have done business since I arrived in 2004. Now, I get to see their children buy products and add services to their accounts. Some of the children leave the area, but I still refer them to State Farm wherever they relocate. Some return, and when that happens, it is so awesome to see and hear about their accomplishments, family life, and goals. I am honored that they choose to do business with me because of family ties. W2W: Have you always lived in Aiken?

16

W2W: What is it about the community you serve that is most interesting, beneficial, appealing?

I love my church and my church family, St Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church where I have been a member since 2006. I eventually converted to Catholicism in 2011. My husband is a cradle Catholic. Kimberlee converted in 2013. W2W: Is this a family business that involves your daughter, Kimberlee Howard? Collette: I hope that Kimberlee considers following in my footsteps and will take over the business when I retire. Of course, retirement is not part of my plans for a while. Kimberlee has been working for me since high school, and now that

she has graduated from USC Aiken, she will have an awesome opportunity with State Farm to inherit the business. Who knows what the future holds. W2W: Us ladies want to know about the woman, but can you tell us about your husband? Collette: My husband, Larry Ball, is retired, as Vice President of Operations, Honey Well Plant. He was also Plant Manager prior to that title. He was in manufacturing for over 30 years. He assists me whenever I need him in the office. He is very helpful and enjoys knowing that I love what I do, and that is helping others. We have been married for 16 years. Together, we have 4 children and 3 grandsons. W2W: In general, how has the insurance industry changed on your watch? What are some of your goals? How would you like to see the industry change? Collette: The question is, what has not changed? The insurance industry have definitely evolved since I began in 1990. Our State regulations are stringent, the changes in our product lines, new technology, and most importantly, the way we do business. Our customer’s tastes and preferences influence how and when that happens. The State Farm agent is the face of the company. When I first began as an agent, my customers walked in the office to sign paper applications for products and services. They paid premiums in the office or mailed them to the Company. Now, our customers have many options due to technological advancements over the years. They can complete transactions electronically, over the phone, and online. With new technology, State Farm has a pocket application that can be downloaded on their cell phones or IPad to conduct business, file claims, pay

premiums, make changes to their policies, and the list goes on and on. It is rare to do business face to face anymore. I have to admit, I miss those days. But because of new technology, we can get things done quickly and more precisely for our customers. I continue to dream and set goals. I am taking piano lessons, and I love it. It has been over a year since I began lessons. I hope to play Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven classical music one day. As far as goals, I have short term and long term goals for the business. I will make decisions about those goals when the time comes. Right now, I am enjoying the landscape of our city, spending time with my family, and friends. I tried several times to rewrite this article based on our interview questions, but each time I found myself unable to articulate and educate you about Collette Ball any better than she herself did with her own words. A graduate from SC State University, who attained her MBA from the University of Notre Dame, Collette Ball is a goal-setting, family oriented, community serving, high achiever and it is our great pleasure to share her with the Aiken community. Give her a call and let her know you read about her in Aiken Woman Magazine. I never fail to be amazed by the women of Aiken!

Let’s Talk

“We strive to turn our customers into lifelong friends” By Harriet Stwora

Tidwell Jewelers goes back four generations. Robert Tidwell attended a watch repair school and afterwards started teaching watch repair, eventually opening a jewelry store in Columbia in the 1940s. He passed his vast watch repair skills along with his knowledge of jewelry down to his family. Today his son, Danny Tidwell and his wife, Lynda, opened their first jewelry store in 1977 in Johnston, S. C. Currently Danny owns four stores in South Carolina within a 30-mile radius. They include: Johnston, Greenwood, Saluda and Batesburg Leesville. Danny and Lynda have two daughters and two granddaughters. Their granddaughter’s Courtney and Abby does the voice work for radio commercials for the company. In the mid 90s, Danny and Lynda opened a store in Saluda, in which their daughter, Tracey Herron currently manages. 18

While most people think of jewelry as expensive, Danny Tidwell prides himself in giving the customer the best price possible. The Tidwell legacy is especially known for their expert jewelry and watch repair service. In addition, they design and create custom jewelry; do jewelry casting; stone setting, pearl stringing, engraving and even appraisals... all in-house. They can take your old jewelry and make a new piece, such as pendants, earrings, etc. using your scrap gold or old diamonds. There are many jewelers that pay you for your old jewelry but few if any will transform it into beautiful new jewelry. And as many folks have discovered, the cash you get for your old jewelry is a modest amount. Why not recycle your old jewelry into a custom up-to-date work of art?

of my best friends, Tuesday Simmons was working at Tidwell’s and she hooked me up with Henry Herron, the design expert, and he came up with the most perfect design. The ring is absolutely gorgeous!! Secondly, I wanted a different look with my wedding ring and there again Tuesday came to myaid again. I met with her, picked out the most perfect stone to “bling” up my ring and within four days, I picked up my beautiful, gorgeous ring that sparkled so much I thought I was dreaming! I told Tuesday I was never going to take my ring off!!

“Danny, tell me in detail the services you offer in your stores:” “We have in-house jewelry and watch repair with six full-time jewelers on staff and the latest technology. We use CAD software drawings. We can also create a wax model of your design to be used to cast your one-of-a-kind piece so you can see your piece of jewelry before it is made. We can also email a life-like image of what your jewelry will look like so you can recommend modifications or give your approval. We are able to take care of every jewelry repair need in our stores. Our master jeweler Bob Evans has extensive experience in all facets of jewelry and watch repair. We can do it all. Most repairs are completed within 3 business days. We even do repairs and custom work for jewelers in other towns.” “We are very proud of all of our employees and we treat them like family,” says Danny. “We include them in family outings, and get-togethers and have developed a close relationship with them over the years. And I believe they value our special friendship and comraderie.

In saying that, if you ever need a great place to buy jewelry, repairs or create the design of your dreams, Tidwell’s is the place to go!! I can honestly say they turned my requests into reality! I now have not 1, but 2 beautiful rings that will be with me the rest of my life!!! Thanks Tuesday, for doing such a wonderful job and for recommending Tidwells to me. I will tell everyone to go there for all their jewelry needs! Susan Hartley Sally, S. C. “I was in search of an engagement ring for my girlfriend of 5 years. She knew exactly what she wanted and I searched all over the Columbia area to find it. I made the trip to Batesburg Leesville and at that location Henry Herron told me he could make me what I wanted and stay within my budget, “No problem!” I will always choose Tidwell’s for my jewelry needs! Tyler Stalvey Gaston, S. C. These testimonials clearly state true satisfied customers and why The Tidwell Jewelry Company has been so successful with continuing increase in business every year! I Love to See People

Smile!

Dr. Jewel Sparkle Pompey of North Aiken Dental, belongs to a family embedded in Aiken life in a variety of ways. She is married to her high school sweetheart, David Dorsey. They have two Huskies, Rusty and Lilly. Her Mother, Dr. Joyce Pompey is a professor at USC-Aiken and her Dad, Aubrey Pompey, is a guidance counselor at Loyd Kennedy Charter School Aiken Academy of Performing Arts and the Varsity Girls Basketball Coach at Aiken High School. She has an older brother, Aubrey Pompey, Jr. who is a music producer. A devout Christian, she serves in a variety of positions in her church, Ridge Hill Baptist Church. She especially enjoys work with the Youth Ministry. “My goal,” she stated,” is to inspire youth to become the best they can be and to work hard in everything they do, and the rest will fall into place.” “I decided to become a dentist because even as a child, I have always loved to see people smile. If I can help someone feel good about themselves with a beautiful smile, then I have achieved my goal,” Dr. Pompey explained. “I was fortunate to have a mentor in the dental field, my own dentist, Dr. Dorothea Taylor. She inspired and encouraged me to pursue a career in dentistry. I attended USC Columbia for my Bachelor of Science degree and obtained my Doctorate of Dental Medicine degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Dr. Taylor opened her second location in Aiken shortly after I graduated and I was fortunate enough to be able to work at my current location since 2009. I love the small town feel of Aiken and being able to work close to my home and family. Family is very important to me.”

By Carol Ryall

North Aiken Dental caters to families, treating patients of all ages. As a general dental practice, they perform extractions, place fillings, crowns, bridges, partials and complete dentures. They also offer whitening, veneers and implants. They provide oral sedation and “laughing gas” to anyone who is apprehensive about their treatment. “We want patients to feel at home and comfortable when they come to our office,” Dr. Pompey commented. “I especially enjoy the variety and ability to cater to and get to know whole families.” “My greatest joy in my profession is knowing that I have made a positive difference in someone’s life; not only giving them a beautiful smile, but educating them about their oral health as well,” Dr. Pompey said. “The most memorable moments are dealing with the children, whether it’s helping a two year old overcome her fear of doctors or taking time to talk with special needs children whose innocence and trust bring a smile to your face.” When asked what advice she would offer other busy professional women trying to balance professional and personal lives, her answer was, “Enjoy the moments while they are happening. Leave work at work. When you are with your family cherish those times and don’t let work interfere with your family life. It will still be there tomorrow. I believe in taking time for yourself and for vacations. I took a mini-vacation in October and it totally re-energized me. Find activities outside of work that make you smile, stimulate you and relax you. Your work and life will go better if you do!” If you or any member of your family need any type of dental work, North Aiken Dental is the place to go for everyone’s oral health care. Their office is located on the north side of Aiken at 1466 Columbia Highway N. Their website is www.northaikendental.com. You can call them today at 803 649 9899 to make an appointment.

February is Heart Month, a Great Time to Get Heart Healthy What you need to know

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, affecting an estimated 44 million women. For some women, plaque builds up inside their coronary arteries over many years, limiting blood flow to the heart and potentially causing a heart attack. Many names are used to refer to heart disease, including: • • • • • •

Atherosclerosis Coronary heart disease Hardening of the arteries Heart disease Ischemic heart disease Narrowing of the arteries

Common causes

Some of the most common causes of heart disease are as follows: • Smoking • High fat & cholesterol levels in blood • High blood pressure • High sugar levels in blood • Blood vessel inflammation

Smoking

There are several reasons why smoking is first on the list. It increases blood pressure, blood clotting and recurring heart disease after bypass surgery. In addition, it decreases a person’s exercise tolerance and HDL or “good” cholesterol. For young men and women, smoking is the most important risk factor for heart disease, producing greater risk in those who are under 50. Women smokers who use oral contraceptives are at much greater risk of heart disease and stroke 26

than others, and overall, cigarette smokers are at higher risk than cigar and pipe smokers. When combined with other factors such as family history, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, obesity and diabetes, smoking greatly increases the risk of heart disease.

High blood pressure

Blood pressure normally rises and falls throughout the day, but if it stays high for a long time it can damage your heart and lead to health problems. Consider these statistics for the United States: • About 75 million adults have high blood pressure • About one in three adults have prehypertension (higher than normal blood pressure, but not yet in the high range) • Only about half of the number of people who have high blood pressure have it under control • In 2014, 410,000 deaths were identified where high blood pressure was a primary or contributing factor • The cost of high blood pressure to the nation each year is $48.6 billion. This includes healthcare services, medications for treatment and missed work.

Signs & symptoms

Heart disease signs or symptoms can vary widely. The most common warning signs include: • • • • • • •

Chest pain or discomfort Upper body pain Shortness of breath Breaking out in a cold sweat Feeling unusually tired Nausea and vomiting Lightheadedness

One thing to watch for is that not all symptoms develop rapidly. It can sometimes take hours, days or weeks for warning signs to emerge.

Prevention

Living a healthy lifestyle can help prevent heart disease. This includes eating heart-healthy foods, maintaining a healthy weight, managing stress, exercising and not smoking.

What to do for heart health

Most importantly, if you think you might be having a heart attack, act fast. It can save your life! Always call 9-1-1 and do not attempt to drive.

Personal Note

D

o you ever feel like you are moving in circles? In the last few months, I have found myself wondering about the state of this world. How senseless some things are, or so they seem to be to me. I rarely turn the news on anymore because there is so much sadness. A little face that haunts my dreams or a pair of grief stricken eyes that I can’t get out of my mind. I read once that our children are like little tanks. Imagine their bellies are a reserve filled with either positive or negative emotions. Those emotions both good and bad come from us. Whatever we fill that tank with, is what comes out of their mouths. So I have to wonder, why are people so mean? When I was younger, I can remember my parents teaching me to be kind. I know it’s hard to believe I just wasn’t born that way, right? Seriously, if I said something that wasn’t nice, my mother would say, “that isn’t a nice thing to say.” or if I was being rude or unkind, I remember the old adage, “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.” Now days people think it’s funny to say mean things. They sit around and see who can say the meanest things. Does it come from this new form of socializing that we have, Facebook/twitter/Instagram/snapchat , where we can shoot off a comment to someone without any real consequence. Where we can hide behind a computer screen and make veiled remarks, yet everyone knows who you are talking about. Does that make it ok if you don’t name the person you are “slamming” specifically? I was at a local performance recently and two young ladies were sitting behind me. I felt like I was at a casting call for a “Mean Girls” movie. The seventeen-ish year old young woman, spent an hour… critiquing every single person who stepped foot on the stage. I was embarrassed for her and I felt badly for the young people who were being graded on this performance. I usually bite my tongue, however, this time I could not. I asked a teacher to tell me her name. She did better than that, she called her over. Now I could embarrass her by telling you all who she was, but my mama raised me better than that. I only mention this because it is scary to me to think we have lost our compassion for one another. When I was in school if I was watching student performances my thoughts would have been, “they must be very nervous”, “wow, that took a lot of guts to sing that song.” “ That was amazing for a solo performance.” “what great dancers” instead, here was a young lady who had absolutely nothing nice to say for fifty plus minutes. After I admonished her for her behavior, I was very sad. I wondered how self conscious this young woman was, and how insecure in herself she must be, how empty of positive emotions to share from her love tank. It may be “uncool” and terribly “unpopular” but I want to always be the positive and not the negative. I want to fill all the people I “pour” into with kindness and love. I know at times I have failed at that. I am sure I have said some not nice things myself from time to time, and I will do better, and maybe because I shared this with you, you will stop yourself or someone else from being unnecessarily unkind to someone. Until Next Time, Your Friend

“Children are likely to live up to what you believe of them.” -Lady Bird Johnson, former U.S. first lady 28
