AIESEC in University of Malaya

Global Volunteer Information Sharing Session On the 3rd and 5th of September, AIESEC in UM had info sharing session with Form 6 students from SMK Darul Ehsan and SMK Bandar Utama. In this session, students are exposed to pathways they can explore after completing their STPM exams. Exchange participants from Clean Our Plate project and Speak Up project were invited to share their Global Volunteer experiences with the students. Besides, we also have AIESEC members who went to Global Volunteer to join the session as well. We hope that the students enjoyed themselves and have a better clarity towards what they’re seeking for after the session.

Celebrating diversity

Six months ago, I went to an AIESEC conference. There I heard ‘The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure that you seek’. I joined this program because I knew that travelling alone to a country that I can't even speak their native language is way out of my comfort zone, so I knew that this is my cave. In this experience I got to know myself more, I got to know amazing people.

At the beginning in Thailand, I asked myself why did I join volunteering program, as I could just be sleeping and having fun in my place. With days passing by, I started to see how beneficial this opportunity can be. I met so many great people with so many different backgrounds, different mindsets and of course different cultures from around the world. In addition, I got the chance to actually see Thai culture and experience how people there live. In a matter of a fact, I used to travel around in the weekends to explore this beautiful country.

My project was teaching English to Thai students there. I can’t describe how great it was, although it was hard and pretty challenging to communicate with the students, but they were nice and active, which made it so exciting. Also, I got help from the school teachers and of course my host family.

I could never forget this exchange experience, as I feel it helped me a lot to challenge and explore myself, and I will never regret spending the summer break volunteering in another country, because I know for sure that this experience was my cave.
