President’s Message Today we are living in troubling and unprecedented times dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. Many people and families have been affected globally including right here in Eastern NY. The impact has been far reaching on the afflicted, medical community, financial markets, local businesses, school districts, local and State governments, students, colleges, etc. Having to work from home, embrace social distancing, wear masks in public, and assist in home schooling of our children are just some of the challenges we’ve been facing and actually pales in comparison to anyone that has become ill with the virus. Never would I have ever imagined that something like this could happen. I hope everyone is staying safe and taking the necessary precautions. We will definitely be living in a new normal moving forward until a vaccine or medical treatment is developed to further fight this virus. We will learn a lot through this experience, but we will get through it. continued on page 2

I wanted to reach out and say that AIAENY is here for you and that we can be a resource. So far this year we’ve planned some really great educational opportunities and social events that have unfortunately been put on hold. In the meantime, we’re looking to provide more online continuing educational opportunities for the chapter including a special 3-hour course hosted by Peter Yost. We are also in the process of implementing an electronic online and hard copy A.R.E. resources for ENY emerging professionals. This will include a variety of study materials including PDF’s of study guides, flash cards, case studies, and access to simulated online exams. Within the chapter, there are also great opportunities for volunteering, networking, and leadership by joining one of our committees or offering to assist in organizing one of our yearly events or educational opportunities. 2020 has been a challenging year so far, but let us focus on the better times that lie ahead. Feel free to reach out to me and the volunteers at AIAENY if there is any assistance we can provide you.

New York State Board of Regents Approves Regulatory Amendments in Architecture

The New York State Board of Regents approved regulatory amendments in architecture that are effective April 22, 2020. These regulatory amendments move New York State into closer alignment with the national standards for licensing architects while providing greater flexibility in licensure pathways. For a detailed view of the regulatory amendments, click here.

Below is a summary of the regulatory changes: •

A Doctor of Architecture is now included as a type of degree that may be received from an NAAB-accredited program

•

Master’s degrees related to architecture are now permitted to count in lieu of not more than one year of experience

•

Experience that is earned non-concurrently with full-time attendance at college, including but not limited to summertime employment, is now permitted to count towards the experience requirements for licensure, so long as the experience is a minimum duration of one month

•

The capability for a candidate to review and challenge an exam division is eliminated

•

Exam candidates are now permitted to request that exam eligibilities be opened up after the 3rd year of a Bachelor of Architecture or Master of Architecture program if the only degree received, or after the 1st year of a Master of Architecture program following receipt of an undergraduate degree, or after the accumulation of 7 units of combined education/experience

•

Endorsement of a US or Canadian architect’s license is now permitted for those applicants who have five years of acceptable experience within the seven years preceding application, provided they have met the exam requirement, have provided satisfactory evidence of good standing in each jurisdiction in which they are licensed, and have submitted an attestation of good moral character

•

Endorsement of a Canadian architect’s license is now permitted for those applicants who have five years of acceptable experience within the seven years preceding application if they have provided satisfactory evidence of good standing in each jurisdiction in which they are licensed, have submitted an attestation of good moral character, and, if they have not met the exam requirement, who have passed New York State’s practical exam

AIANYS Website Provides COVID-19 Resources AIA New York State developed a web page on their website in response to COVID-19 that provides valuable resources to our members. Resources include information from AIA National, infographics, pre-recorded and live webinars hosted by AIANYS and New York State’s 13 regional components, including AIAENY, along with links to national, federal, state, economic, financial and business resources. Live Webinar on Significant Changes to 2020 NYS Codes Crushing the Code New York State: Commercial is an online course that prepares building and design professionals in New York State to comply with the many requirements in the 2020 ECCCNYS and design more energy-efficient buildings in the process. In an era of more stringent code enforcement, the course provides critical knowledge about significant changes, new provisions and best practices to avoid objections and stalled projects.

By the end of this full-day course, participants will: • Understand the structure and rationale behind the energy code, including the new provisions of the 2020 ECCCNYS; • Differentiate between the various compliance pathways, including required testing and documentation; • Recognize the interdependence of the building envelope, mechanical and lighting systems and their impacts on energy code compliance; • Identify areas for improved project communication and coordination to support compliance.

Note: This course is not intended for those who want to learn energy modeling or how to use COMcheck or REScheck but will teach you the prescriptive requirements that underlie those programs.

Architect Registration Examination (ARE) Update Updated on April 24 Prometric Announces Continued Closures Through May 31

Due to ongoing concerns over safe delivery of examinations, Prometric has decided to keep all test centers in North America closed until May 31, 2020.

NCARB is aware you may have already received this information from Prometric, and we apologize for any confusion that may have added to your stress during this already difficult time. We know delaying your testing progress is discouraging, and we are looking into options to allow more flexibility.

Prometric Closure and Reopening • Prometric is continuing to monitor the Coronavirus outbreak to determine when they will reopen test centers across the globe.

• When Prometric reopens a center, it will operate at 50 percent capacity to maintain social distancing for those who are testing.

• If a reopened test center is booked beyond the 50 percent capacity limit, Prometric will randomly select candidates to reschedule in order to ensure a safe testing environment.

Prometric has begun canceling appointments.

Once canceled, your ability to reschedule this appointment will be delayed until Friday, May 1.

Your eligibility for the scheduled division will be reset, and NCARB will apply a seat credit to your account allowing you to reschedule this or any other future division at no cost.

We recommended you reschedule any appointments for fall or early winter to avoid further disruption.

All rescheduling fees have been waived until further notice.

You will not be able to reschedule an exam appointment until your eligibilities have been reset by NCARB. Purchasing an additional seat credit will not allow you to reschedule a canceled appointment sooner.

Building Science Foundation: Keeping Our Homes Safe and Sound The building science principles forming the foundation for high performance are how heat moves, how moisture moves, and how the two always work together. The three forms of heat transfer—radiation, conduction, and convection—and the four modes of moisture movement—bulk water, capillary water, air-transported moisture, and vapor diffusion—are covered by practical expressions in buildings. The management of heat and moisture (hygrothermal) is accomplished by continuous control layers—water, air, and thermal— and then inevitable wetting is managed with a vapor profile—dedicated and directional drying by diffusion. This educational module sets the stage for how high performance can be accomplished in the context of model energy code compliance. It also sets the stage for how a high performance enclosure demands high performance HVAC, particularly connecting ACCA Manual J (load calculations) with ACCA Manuals S (system sizing) and D (duct distribution and sizing).

Building Science Puzzles Building Science Puzzles - A wide variety of moisture problems in buildings are covered in a step-by-step discovery process in which attendees use building science principles to identify the moisture problems and develop appropriate solutions. Even though all of the puzzles are for existing buildings the principles demonstrated by each puzzle can and will be related to moisture management in new construction.

About Peter Yost: Peter Yost is the person you turn to if you want to truly understand how buildings work: their design, specification, construction, performance assessment. He brings more than 30 years experience in building, researching, teaching, writing, and consulting on high-performance buildings. His expertise ranges from construction waste management and advanced framing to energy efficiency, indoor air quality, moisture management, and building durability.

Peter has provided this building-science expertise to leading building industry high performance efforts, including USGBC’s LEED for Homes and REGREEN, EPA’s WaterSense, DOE’s Building America, and IWBI’s WELL programs. Peter is a Lecturer for Yale’s graduate program in Forestry & Environmental Studies, Technical Director for the web-based GreenBuildingAdvisor, and an Adjunct Faculty with the University of Massachusetts Department of Building Construction and Technology program.

A LEED AP, he is a past co-chair of the USGBC’s LEED for Homes program, and a certified instructor/ course author for the NAHB Advanced Green Building: Building Science certificate program. Peter’s work includes both academic and vocational instruction, field research on building products, building investigations, construction document review, and technical research and writing.

Peter is an Accredited Building Enclosure Commissioning Process Provider (BECxP)/Commissioning Authority+Building Enclosure (CxA+BE) – University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering and Department of Engineering Professional Development (2016).

Event Postponed On March 13, we announced that out of concern for the health, safety and welfare of the architectural community and the general public who were planning to attend the 2020 Design Awards Reception on March 25 at the Opalka Gallery at Sage Colleges, we would be postponing the event. As you all know, a lot has changed since March 13. While we still hope to be able to host our celebration of design, we are following the information on the pandemic closely and will keep you informed on our future plans for the event.

Event Canceled The A’20 conference is officially canceled and will not be rescheduled due to the COVID-19 outbreak. We know this is discouraging, but not unexpected, news. By making this decision now, we hope to minimize any stress or inconvenience.

If you are a registered attendee of A’20, your registration fees have already been refunded to your payment method on file.

A’21 is happening in Philadelphia, June 17-19, 2021, and we hope to see you there. We are also looking into hosting a virtual event later this year, as well as developing additional continuing education opportunities, and will keep you posted.

Until then, check out AIAU or AIA New York State for other options to earn your HSW and ADA credits.
