AUGUST EVENT RECAPS

CRAIG GALATI, FAIA CRAIG GALATI, FAIA 2023 WCMAA RECIPIENT 2023 WCMAA RECIPIENT

As we head into the last third of 2023, the summer is coming to an end and I know we are all looking forward to some cooler weather. Kids have started going back to school or off to colleges and we are about to welcome our Stanley Cup winning Golden Knights back when pre-season games begin at the end of the month

Coming up in less than 2 weeks is our AIA Las Vegas ARC Product Show 2023, which will be held at the INDUSTRIAL event space on September 13, 2023. I want to encourage all of our firms in Las Vegas if you have not reached out to the AIA Las Vegas office and committed one of your firm leaders to the Design Connections Luncheon, please do so immediately.

Quickly approaching in October is our Ultimate Drive at Topgolf We did have to make a change recently from Atomic Golf back to Topgolf from last year as construction will not be completed by our date. We are seeking teams to participate this year and I look forward to seeing many of you at the event. This is a great time out together and you don’t have to worry about skill level, just come and have fun

In conclusion this month, I wanted to mention that at the August 2nd Board of County Commissioner meeting our Assistant Director of Operations, Taryn Kole, got up and testified on behalf of AIA Las Vegas in support of the recent Title 30 changes As many of us know, the county has been going through an update process and on the 2nd was the vote to adopt the changes. As we started this year, I wanted our chapter to focus on advocacy and I was proud to be in the audience that day and see how AIA Las Vegas continues to be involved at all levels of government.

Hope everyone has a great September and I look forward to speaking with many of you at the AIA Las Vegas ARC Product Show

Sincerely,

CANDIDATES

I am an architect at Gensler Las Vegas, registered in Nevada, California, Hawaii, and District of Columbia with a diverse range of commercial, government, and residential projects, including corporate headquarters, offices, sports facilities, and building renovations I participate in multiple aspects of projects of various sizes, from programming and conceptual design through construction administration I was involved in the design and documentation of the 650,000 SF TSA Headquarters in Springfield, VA, and was also on the design team for The St James, a 450,000 SF lifestyle center, development anchor, and sports and recreation facility outside of Chicago, IL In addition to architecture, I hold a Juris Doctor and an MBA, and was a corporate attorney for over 5 years in New York City prior to beginning my architecture career I am interested in becoming Treasurer because it is not often that I get the opportunity to combine my background in corporate, securities, and real estate law, as well as business administration and finance, into my current career as an architect I would be proud to use my knowledge and skills to benefit the architecture profession, and my diverse experience will bring a unique perspective to the AIA Las Vegas Board

Rick is the founder and managing Principal at GRN Vision (www GRNVision com), a professional Green Building consultancy and public interest architecture firm headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada GRN Vision provides professional consulting services including sustainability program development and green building certifications for a broad range of commercial, industrial, multifamily housing and public sector clients. GRN Vision is also passionately committed to community issues of equity including affordable housing and homelessness. Previous to GRN Vision Rick served as Executive Director for Green Chips (now Impact Nevada), a Nevada NGO promoting sustainability through collaborative public-private partnerships Rick's professional experience in Sustainable Design and Architecture has encompassed all aspects of the building process including master planning, programming, project management, integrated design, Green Building certification, leadership training and business development Rick is a community activist providing volunteer and pro-bono design services to local service organizations including Habitat For Humanity, Family Promise, Olive Crest, and the Historic Harrison House, to name a few

I'm a Mexican Architect, I came to USA right after licensure in year 2000 In 2002 I started working in Las Vegas I had to start small, learning the codes and ordinances, as well as new construction systems Being a wife and mother has been my priority, therefore, it took me 20 year to get my licensure in Nevada, which I'm very proud off - I'm a very dedicated individual, and always striving to learn and improve I enjoy being part of positive groups and/or associations I relate with good causes, and dedicate my available time to improve myself and others As an Architect, I'm interested on creating a better community for all of us. I think that we can all join forces to create a unified community of professionals.

I participate in organizations outside of the AIA as I believe that to further the influence of design and our profession, we need to seek opportunities to do so outside of it Simply put, we don't need more architects that care about design, we need developers, brokers, and industry leaders that care about design I've learned that to make an impact on the built environment, architecture alone is not enough I am highly involved in NAIOP Southern Nevada, where I connect with CRE and policy leaders I believe that by forming connections outside of AIA and representing our profession in these spheres, we, as architects and designers, are more capable of influencing decisions and motivating change

CANDIDATES

I started my career in Architecture in 2000 after graduating from Silverado High School. Over the course of my 23 year career I have worked at three locals firms and had the privilege of working on a huge range of projects from small TI’s to mega resorts. In 2021 I decided to switch gears in my career and join the City of Henderson as a Project Construction Manager. After obtaining my licensure is 2019, I have been looking for ways to give back to the profession and mentor young people seeking licensure This desire to give back led me on the path to becoming a committee member for the development of the ARE exams for NCARB I participated in the committee for three years before taking a step back to focus on additional career goals I am interested in giving back again with the opportunity to become a director at the local AIA Las Vegas office

I am a licensed architect and interior designer with 9 years of professional experience Previously, I have been involved in both local and chapter leadership positions with ASID and enjoyed the impact that I was able to make in my city's design community and in the tristate area of Louisiana, Arkansas & Mississippi As a chapter board member in ASID, I was responsible for monthly newsletters to the region, worked with committees to run special events, supported emerging professionals, and advocated to State legislatures on behalf of the profession I believe that this experience would be translate well to a board position in AIA My membership in professional organizations has had a profound influence & benefit to my career path, and I value the opportunity to give that same support back to my community

My name is Jeffrey Sarmiento I am a Vegas born navy (Seabee) veteran I am a UNLV alumnus, class of 2016 Master of Architecture, and class of 2014 Bachelor of science I am a Votech (SECTA) high school alumnus I am a husband and father I would be a strong fit because I am still learning and have the passion to keep learning what everyone wants to teach me I want to give back to the community because I was born in Las Vegas and am very proud of my city and the direction that it is moving in The AIA has a lot of opportunities and programs that can help kids growing up wanting to become an architect help achieve their goals I didn’t know about the AIA until I went to UNLV I don’t want that to happen to high school kids that want to become architects They lose out on opportunities that they didn’t even know they had.

REMEMBERING HARRY CAMPBELL, AIA

Harry Campbell was a fine architect, a champion for the profession, a community leader, a dedicated mentor and a friend to all who knew him. When he passed on July 15th2023, AIA Las Vegas and AIA Nevada lost a valued and faithful member of over 50 years. He established his firm, HCA Architects in 1973 and contributed to the growth, enrichment and development of our city for the next 35 years, designing and building public schools, municipal buildings, fire stations, courthouses and even the Fremont Street Experience His firm also received recognition and awards for many of his projects including Henderson City Hall and the Las Vegas Federal Courthouse. He served as President of the AIA Las Vegas Chapter in 1980 and went on to serve on the Nevada State Board of Architecture, Interior Design and Residential Design for many years working to improve the profession and improve the Licensing Exam for the United States and Canada He was awarded the highest honor that can be bestowed on an architect in Nevada when he received the AIA Nevada Silver Medal

Harry was the first architect I met when I arrived in Las Vegas in 1994. Needing to work, I accepted a temporary position at HCA Architects and Harry and his staff, including a young Mark Hobaica, AIA, were very welcoming and supportive It was there that Harry and Mark told me about an opportunity with their professional organization, the Las Vegas Chapter of the American institute of Architects. The chapter needed an Executive Director. Harry and Mark encouraged me to meet with Jon Rappel, AIA who was the President of the chapter at that time I did and, the rest, as we say, is history If it were not for Harry Campbell and his wise advice and support, I would have missed the opportunity to serve as Executive Director of AIA Nevada and AIA Las Vegas for 27 years which has turned out to be the highlight and the most rewarding of my career

Our lives touch so many other lives and we seldom realize it as it happens. I am grateful to Harry Campbell, and so appreciative of his many contributions to the AIA Chapters, the profession and our community Like so many others I feel fortunate to have known him, and I just want to say “Thanks, Harry”, for touching my life in such a meaningful way Rest in Peace, my friend.
