Practicing architecture is a privilege; being able to see our imaginations become reality

for their extraordinary work in West Michigan, and all of this year’s award winners for their hard work and exemplary contributions to the profession. To the clients and construction partners with whom we have teamed, thank you for giving us the opportunity to creatively practice our discipline, bringing concept to reality.

is something most people never experience. We gather inspiration from the past while envisioning what a brighter future will bring. Our communities rely on us to creatively problem solve a multitude of challenges and it is our responsibility to take advantage of this opportunity. Do not play it safe, dare to challenge the status quo, always move to be better. This is how we will truly see changes within our communities, their experiences, and the quality of life that we all are able to enjoy.

The AIAGR Board of Directors would like to thank and recognize our sponsors for their continued partnership with AIA Grand Rapids. 2020 has been a challenging year for all and your support of this organization and its members is greatly appreciated. Through this partnership, we are able to provide a unified voice for the architectural profession and a resource for our members. The AIAGR Board of Directors is committed to efforts that ensure our profession is part of the solution that finally dismantles systemic racial injustice and violence. I ask this community of creative thinkers to join us and hold us accountable in the coming years to ensure our deeds match our words. To that end, the focus of our actions should be to acknowledge, listen, and learn. As we look forward to 2021 and hopefully a new normal of social connectedness, we anticipate many opportunities for you to get involved in AIA Grand Rapids to make it a place for community inspiration.

With our mission of supporting and advancing our profession, our annual Honor Awards Celebration serves to bring together all who are part of the West Michigan architecture and construction community. The AIA Grand Rapids Chapter continues to recognize excellence in architecture throughout the region. With an emphasis on promoting the value of good design, we encourage our members to pursue excellence through their work and service to the community. 2020 Scholarship Recipient Nick Schmitt AIA Grand Rapids has selected Nicholas (Nick) Schmitt as the 2020 AIA Grand Rapids scholarship recipient. Each year, AIA Grand Rapids chooses an emerging professional to receive a scholarship to assist in continuing their architectural education. Nick is a recent graduate of Ferris State University in the Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Sustainability Program. Nick is currently attending Lawrence Technological University’s Master of Architecture program. In May of 2018, he began working for TowerPinkster in downtown Grand Rapids as an Architectural Intern and continues to enjoy working for them. Following graduate school, Nick hopes to practice in West Michigan for years to come. In his free time, he enjoys hanging out with friends and family, going to sporting events, and working on projects with his brothers. Since 2006, AIA Grand Rapids has provided scholarship grants to architectural students. The main fundraising mechanism for these scholarships is the annual AIAGR Golf Outing. Thank you to all that attended the golf outing this past September to make these scholarships possible.

“Over the course of my time at KCAD, I have been able to expand and translate concepts from my undergraduate degree into a new field. From Human Centered Design to Architecture, the importance of a critical understanding of historical and contemporary context have become imperative to my design process. KCAD has allowed me to work in conjunction with community stakeholders and local professionals to ensure my work translates from the educational realm to the professional.” - Andrew Dancer

AIAGR 2020 Honor Awards

AIA Henry Adams Medal Andrew Dancer The newly accredited NAAB Master of Architecture (MArch) degree program at Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University has awarded their first AIA Henry Adams Medal to Andrew Dancer in recognition of extraordinary academic achievement. Dancer was also chosen to give the annual 2020 KCAD Commencement Graduate Address. For more than a century, the AIA has provided a medal of excellence to the top graduating students in National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) or Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB) accredited degrees, Bachelor of Architecture, Master of Architecture, or Doctor of Architecture. The award is named in honor of Henry Adams (1838-1918), a historian, author, and scholar who donated his book Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres, and eventually the royalties, to the AIA. Dancer has been a very active member of the KCAD AIAS chapter, and most recently served as chapter President. He has also served as a valuable liaison between KCAD AIAS and the AIA Grand Rapids chapter.

Humanitarian Award Steve Johnson

Founder of Oasis of West Michigan AIA Grand Rapids is pleased to award Steve Johnson the 2020 Humanitarian Award. Through his work, Steve has drawn attention to the lack of housing for adults with developmental disabilities. His efforts have led to disabled adult having their own apartments and living as independently as possible at Oasis of West Michigan. For the last eight years, Oasis has focused on independent living for disabled adults. The goal is to have disabled adults fully integrated into society; living in apartment buildings, houses, or condos just like everyone else – not in groups segregated from their community. Oasis is the catalyst for many families to push for inclusion and equal housing for adults with developmental disabilities. At a time when housing costs are at a premium, Oasis works to assure there will be a variety of housing options for mixed income levels so that segregation from the rest of society is not a requirement. Through Oasis, Steve has been the voice for integration, inclusion, equity, and kindness in the housing industry. The passion Steve has had for so many years will change the approach to housing in West Michigan. And, by celebrating the full inclusion of these individuals in our community, it forces others to be more humane in their efforts to provide housing.

“In learning about his accomplishments, what is particularly appropriate for receiving this award is his focus on people, helping to achieve equity and improve the livelihood of others. Regardless of the specific ways we choose to engage architecture, this should be a fundamental goal for us all. We are humbled by Steven’s dedication to an overlooked part of our community that has a great need to be integrated. He is a true humanitarian. The built environment plays a critical role in removing barriers to greater independence for vulnerable citizens.” - Jury Comments

During his tenure, he helped the board navigate through AIA National’s restructuring and advocated for AIA Grand Rapids to remain a chapter under AIA Michigan. In addition to his involvement in AIA, he is also a citizen advisor for DGRI’s Mobility Alliance where he helps the city navigate mobility initiatives and implement the goals of the GR Forward Plan.

Student Design Award Logan Wyse A Sunday Afternoon The proposed program consists of a new public library, lecture hall/theatre, multipurpose space, many study rooms, coffee shop, and large exterior gathering space. The site for the proposed structure is a long rectangular one, stretching along the river’s edge, running parallel with the downtown district, with a 40’ elevation change from street edge to boardwalk. The spirit of Manistee, Michigan is like the painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat, speaking about an afternoon along the water’s edge. As a romanticized depiction of community and life, it creates a sense of connection and opens the door for interaction. The street level plaza engages the sidewalk through a series of low sloped mounds. The lower plaza engages the river’s edge, allowing visitors to interact with the water. The building bends and flows around this central curve, leading and guiding visitors to engage and communicate. The final result of the structure hints at Seurat’s painting. A community place for all, where people from all over can come and relax, talk, and learn.

Student Design Entries Silo Lofts Lisa Castro

Site Scrutiny Andrew Dancer

A new multi-story, mixed-use building that combines arts programming and housing for both long-term residents and visiting artists. The building has main floor artist workspaces, three levels of private living spaces with accessible units, underground parking, underground art gallery, a void that runs the length of the building for environmental engagement and phenomenology, and rooftop green space with swimming pool.

Site Scrutiny is a design methodology that uses a critical understanding of site and history to produce architecture rooted in place and promotes unexpected experience. Fundamental ways of addressing site and history produce projects that maintain the status quo. Alternatively, Site Scrutiny considers how an extensive investigation of site and history can lead to hyper-local contemporary architecture.

Student Design Entries Riverside Park Treehouse School Stephanie Balkie

The Creative Collective Fatema Sulemanji

Productive schools provide space that engages students, increases their active participation, and gives teachers pleasure. The Treehouse School brings imagination to life. With an elevated horizontal orientation, the school is resilient against flooding while providing small but frequent glimpses through the façade, allowing students to feel as if they are within a treehouse. This design demonstrates that designers can enhance our quality of life through celebrating it amidst the design process. With a close proximity to a nearby residential community, the blanket of food offers a universally-designed space to access community and student garden beds. As a community asset, the Tree House School activates every space for a safe and productive space for all.

The ‘Southwest Area Neighbors’ area of Grand Rapids is in transition. This site has the potential to become a central hub for the artistic community. Within this context, a mixed-use building combines artist workshops and gallery spaces along with private housing. The design explores social, formal, and conceptual challenges of the discourse. Utilizing the Design Excellence Framework, design for safety, well-being, inclusivity, and accessibility have been carefully considered. The design creates a vibrant and welcoming sense of place embedding the building within the local community.

Unbuilt Award Entry Transformative Community Ghafari Associates Nestled at the central western edge of Lafayette Park, this new Transformative Community in Detroit, Michigan seeks to embrace the design ideals set forth by Mies van der Rohe, Ludwig Hilberseimer, and Alfred Caldwell; ideals that are rooted in bolstering urban renewal. Home to world-class architecture and with direct access to the city’s Central Business District, Lafayette Park was developed in the 1950’s -1960’s, and exhibits a lush green landscape with simple structures that perfectly emulate mid-century modern and international-style architecture. The design of this Transformative Community seamlessly blends into the neighborhood and is meant to satisfy those seeking an active urban lifestyle. The development provides a mix of housing types, containing 374 residences in four varieties, including mid-rise, loft-style apartments, condominiums, and a high-rise condominium building. This project also introduces a walkable urban street grid, activating the street level and providing modern amenities to residents, while also offering direct access to Detroit’s central business district and the riverfront.

Residential Architecture Award Hudson Valley House Mathison | Mathison Architects Location: Craryville, New York Construction Firm: Lagonia Construction From a steep, south facing slope in upstate NY, the Hudson Valley House is a residence and retreat for a multi-generational family who invites visitors to enjoy the property year-round. The house is built on the same foundation footprint as a previous multi-story house for the same family. The 80-acre site captures the top and surrounding slopes of a mountain foothill that includes a large hilltop pond and space for additional off-grid family cabins in the future. The family’s primary goals included continued use of this special site by creating a place with large, open spaces that could more easily accommodate family gatherings, take better advantage of spectacular views to the distant Catskill Mountains, address the physical limitations of aging family members, be energyefficient, and be relatively easy to maintain.

Residential Award Entry Silver Lake East Residence Mathison | Mathison Architects Location: Rockford, Michigan Construction Firm: Bespoke Homes This new lakefront home responds to the goals of a young, active family committed to the use of natural materials, natural light, open and flexible space, and a low, modest profile to the street, along with connection to the lake. From the street level, the wooded site slopes down in two directions to wide, sunset views over the lake. The siting and massing of the home considered “public” and “private” spaces, views, daylight, garage access, and lake-level storage opportunities. The house takes full advantage of its elevation, slopes, and views by pushing and pulling the lakeside elevation to maximize the outdoor living experience on each level. The plan was carefully articulated to create select transparent views through the house to the lake beyond, retaining existing mature trees for natural shading.

Small Commercial Design Entry Critical Infrastructure Lott3Metz Architecture Owner: SiteLab Exhibited during the fall of 2019 as commissioned by ArtPrize for its inaugural Project One, Critical Infrastructure is an accessible, open-air pavilion that functions as both architecture and art. Using common materials and construction methods, a welcoming place for everyone was created. Using projections, amplified sounds, and individual interpreters, the design was able to move beyond the rote math of an ADA ramp and create a space that welcomed people of all abilities to not only be in the space but to appreciate the various programming with a freedom of access that few performance spaces allow. The project served as an armature facilitating dynamic programming and community engagement – a stage for disability art events, a platform for artists, and a social gathering space for the community.

Interior Architecture Award Van Dyken Headquarters Mathison | Mathison Architects Owner: Van Dyken Mechanical Construction Firm: Dan Vos Construction Company Van Dyken Mechanical is the home of three sister organizations housed in a 35,000 SF, 70-year old building, originally designed for manufacturing. Under a new generation of leaders, the firm is one of the largest, most progressive, and highly-respected fullservice contracting firms in Michigan. The new leaders challenged the architect to design for transformational change within the footprint of the existing building, creating a modern, high-tech design and production environment that showcases the forward-thinking, high-quality, integrated work of the sister firms. An additional major goal was to improve employee productivity and retention, as well as build a new culture built on collaboration while maintaining their unique brands.

Interior Architecture Award Steelcase Ampersand Progressive AE Owner: Steelcase, Inc. Construction Firm: Christman Constructors, Inc. The Information Technology department at Steelcase Global Headquarters set to design a workspace which takes full advantage of mobility and freedom of choice. An office worker no longer needs 60-80 sq ft of workspace to perform all required tasks. Instead, the IT floor is an experiment in creating a diverse work environment – to organize a floor plate to give greater area for people to connect in groups and teams, to create varied task-oriented spaces, and to allow the office worker the freedom to work at any preferred posture. The idea is to empower the individual to take ownership of a greater area than an 8x8 square where one’s own desk resides, embracing the concept of an equitable and inclusive work environment.

Interior Architecture Award Entries WMCAT Lott3Metz Architecture

Hackley Public Library Fishbeck

Owner: Rockford Development Construction Firm: Rockford Construction

Owner: Hackley Public Library Construction Firm: Port City Construction

WMCAT needed a new home that provided more classroom space, more social interaction spaces (public and private), a larger common space for student gallery shows, fundraising events, and public gatherings, and a place that local businesses could utilize for their own training and business seminars. The WMCAT space is now on the third floor of a newly constructed building overlooking downtown Grand Rapids. The location allows students to utilize the neighborhood for their learning (photography, sketching, videography, etc.), and its proximity to several bus lines makes it easy to access.

The HPL program offered numerous opportunities, formed from basic needs, a constrained site, and library programs. HPL is a Richardsonian Romanesque gem designed in 1891. It is loved and revered by the Muskegon community, especially those with limited opportunities and resources. Community identity, multiplicity, and togetherness were already strong when the project began, leading to the primary design challenge: amplifying what already existed through a program defined by practical needs.

Sustainability Design Award Jack and Mary De Witt Center for Science and Technology Progressive AE Owner: Cornerstone University Construction Firm: Christman Constructors, Inc. Cornerstone University challenged the design team to create a state-of-the-art STEM environment that shows a strong connection between science and faith, and between student and teacher. The building features seven state-of-the-art laboratories, small group engagement areas, outdoor classroom, and rain garden. Faculty offices are located throughout the building to help create easier connections between students and professors. Ecology and the environment are incorporated as a learning tool throughout the facility and the outdoor classroom provides a more natural setting for learning. Water runoff is diverted to a series of rain gardens that flow to the University’s central lake. Water and abundant natural light are essential components to learning about science, but also reflect important spiritual teachings of the school.

The newly constructed, 52,000 sf building is supported by an adjacent expansion and renovation that includes 42,000 square feet of newly added and renovated space to an existing technology center. Each building envelope uses a common material language and proportion, unified in design while being separated by primary function. ADAC already realizes a positive return on investment of the new corporate campus related to their business goals, talent retention and attraction, and overall employee satisfaction. The spaces are uniquely ADACs and allow the automotive company to celebrate their products and also their people.

Building Award The EDDY Integrated Architecture Owner: Whirlpool Corporation | Third Coast Development Construction Firm: Pioneer Construction Whirlpool Corporation developed The Eddy as an oncampus resource for approximately 4,000 employees working in surrounding facilities. The objective was to create an accessible childcare facility, both in terms of location and affordability, that would benefit the Whirlpool’s working families. The centerpiece of the design is the elliptically shaped terrarium, featuring large swaths of glass that allow visual connection in layers - from the entrance lobby to the multipurpose room and beyond to the outdoor playground. The success of the project lies in the combination and integration of building and nature to create spaces that bring the mind and body together and provide room for children to run, climb, slide, explore, and express themselves in an intentional and secure environment.

Building Award Entries Music Center Cornerstone Architects

White Lake Township Library C2AE

Owner: Interlochen Center for the Arts Construction Firm: Spence Brothers

Owner: White Lake Township Library Construction Firm: McCarthy & Smith, Inc.

The Music Center is the latest addition to Interlochen’s campus and connects two existing music facilities. This new building consolidates various music programs, encouraging crosspollination between concentrations ranging from Classical to Singer-Songwriter and Music Production. The design emphasizes the unique experience offered at Interlochen by converging design elements inspired by both music and the wooded campus.

Drawing inspiration from the beautiful new site, the design team developed a replacement building that seamlessly transitions from exterior to interior. The building was designed for the community as a whole and sectioned into quiet and collaborative zones marked by clear signage. Louder areas, like the makerspace and the children section, are situated adjacent to one other; these zones are accentuated with brighter colors and patterns.
