Congratulations to Jack Smith, FAIA recipient of the AIA Idaho Gold Medal!
At AIA Idaho’s state conference of architects, held every two years, architect Jack Smith, FAIA, was awarded the AIA Idaho Gold Medal of Honor. This highest honor given by AIA Idaho recognizes an architect for “their body of work, lasting contributions, theory and practice in the field of architecture.” This was the only gold medal awarded since its inception in 2000. That medal was given to the late Charles Hummel, FAIA, a well-known and distinguished architect from Boise.
At the conference held in Boise on September 29th, the chairman of the Idaho Fellowship and Honors Committee, Glen Berry, FAIA, quoted Pulitzer Prize winning architectural critic Allan Temko with remarks apropos to Smith, “ When one sees his work in California and elsewhere, perfectly at home in different terrains, it is clear that he is not primarily a regional architect, but a far reaching designer of national and even international outlook, including a long glance at Japan, who responds to the needs of specific sites and communities with rare sensitivity and grace.”
Smith was elevated to “fellow” FAIA, in the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows in 1996, a national honor that less than 3% of architects in the nation achieve. He was elevated to fellow in category one, design, “For notable contributions to the aesthetic, scientific, and practical efficiency of architecture.”
Jack Smith is both a practitioner and educator, he holds a doctorate degree in architecture with an underpinning in philosophy. He has received numerous honors and awards in both architecture and academia. Recently retired from a teaching professorship at Montana State University, he has returned to full time practice here in Ketchum and Sun Valley.
Jack Smith, FAIA IdahoCongratulations to Beverly Spears, FAIA recipient of the AIA New Mexico Lifetime Achievement Medal!
Beverly Spears, FAIA New Mexico
This honor recognizes Beverly’s lasting contribution to the profession and the AIA New Mexico architectural community.
Beverley Spears, FAIA is a practicing architect with a focus on regional contemporary design, and a longtime resident of Santa Fe.
Her award-winning firm specializes in a sustainable commercial and residential design, urban design, and historic preservation.
Her abiding interest in preservation and celebration of historic elements in our built environment has resulted in two published volumes: American Adobes (UNM Press, 1987) explores vernacular architecture throughout Northern New Mexico and Early Churches of Mexico: An Architect’s View (UNM Press, 2017) presents a refreshing new look at the sixteenth century church complexes built in central Mexico.
In 2002, Spears was elevated to the national College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects, and in 2003, the Old Santa Fe Association honored her “for her contributions to the character and traditions of Santa Fe.”
Spears Horn Architects, her architecture firm, has received numerous design awards from the city of Santa Fe, the state of New Mexico, and the American Institute of Architects.

The WMR Silver Medal was created in 1978 by architect-sculptor, Donna Quasthoff, AIA, of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Quasthoff attributes John McHugh, FAIA, of Santa Fe, as the architect who asked her to “sculpt the medal.” After completing the design and mold, Quasthoff says that she remembers “spending a very warm day in Albuquerque trying to find a silversmith who would take on the project but was unsuccessful.” She thus decided to have the first medal cast in Santa Fe. Quasthoff says “I checked my 1978 checkbook record and noticed that I had paid Mr. Ross Lew Allen, a Santa Fe jewelry designer, $89.00, and thought perhaps that he had made the silver cast from my plastic model.”

One of Quasthoff’s early design concepts included placement of an AIA logo lapel pin with the eagle and spread wings in front of a Greek Doric column placed within the arching loop at the top of the medal. Ultimately, she decided to forgo the logo’s inclusion, leaving a strong, uncluttered medallion design. No medals with the AIA pin were awarded. From the Denver Daily Journal article, it is apparent Lew Allen cast the first two medals awarded in 1979. There is no record of him casting the next five medals, awarded from 1980 to 1986. The AIA Western Mountain Region Silver Medal was designed by Donna Quastoff, AIA of Santa Fe, New Mexico. An early design included the eagle with spread wings and Greek Doric column of the classic AIA logo. The final design, cast by Santa Fe jeweller Ross Lew Allen, did not include the classic AIA logo.
The Colorado Chapter of the AIA was formed in 1892 and was the first group of architects in the AIA COF Western Mountain Region.
In 1913 Wyoming and New Mexico were included in the Chapter. Utah was added in 1916 then became an independent Chapter in 1921 and at that time it included parts of southern Idaho.
In 1922 the National Executive Committee formed national regions. In 1927 the Western Mountain District was created. It included Washington, Montana, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah and Alaska - but not Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico or Colorado.
Hynek said the WMR officers decided in 1986 to take over the responsibility of ordering and casting the medal and that he and Al Cook, AIA, 1989-1990 WMR Treasurer, were charged with searching for a new silversmith. However, Treasurer (treasurer’s John Conron, FAIA, called when a new that “I was not and I can’t recall sculpting a 14 foot a large bronze sculpture Foundry). The only medal in silver.”
The National Executive Committee regrouped and renamed the regions in 1959. It is at this time that the AIA Western Mountain Region (AIA WMR), as it was most recently known, was formed. It included six states: Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming. The AIA WMR thrived for sixty years until it was dissolved.
In 2023, a group of Fellows from the original AIA WMR states and ones from Idaho and Montana, formed the AIA College of Fellows Western Mountain Region.

The American Institute of Architects Western Mountain Region Silver Medal was awarded to thirty-one recipients over forty years.
in 2023 the AIA COF WMR Regional and State Representatives acknowledged that with the dissolution of the open membership* AIA Western Mountain Region, and the addition of two new States - Idaho and Montana - the now historic Silver Medal can no longer be used.
With the inauguaration of the AIA COF WMR by the Fellows** in all eight States of the new region, a new Silver Medal is needed.
The new AIA COF WMR Silver Medal will be representative of the eight states in the region, and will include an opal (mined in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming) and turquoise (mined in Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and Utah).
Our goal is to award the first, new AIA COF WMR Silver Medal at our inaugural conference in 2024.
* AIA “open membership” refers to basic requirements of licensure and payment of dues
** “Fellow” refers to open membership PLUS admittance to the AIA College of Fellows through a rigorous nomination, review process for elevation to the College.
