Year 10 Courses 2023/25
The move to Year 10 is an exciting time in your school career. As you move into Years 10 and 11, you will study fewer subjects and have some choice. This will enable you to achieve a greater depth of knowledge in each subject, working to the requirements of the GCSE examinations in 2025.
The number of GCSE courses that you will follow will vary between eight and ten, it will depend on whether you select three option subjects or choose two with study as your third or whether at the end of Year 10 you follow the Combined Science or Triple Science pathway. Universities tend to look at the top eight GCSE grades a pupil achieves so it is important to remember that fewer subjects with good final grades are preferable to ten weaker grades. Therefore some of our pupils decide to take the ‘study’ option.
The grading structure for GCSE’s are 9-1; with 9 being the highest:
When making your choices you should ask for as much advice as you need from subject teachers, the Head of Careers, your Form Tutor, your Head of Year and older pupils in Years 10 and 11. We also expect you to talk to your parents about your choices so they can help you make your decision.
Some subjects have projects or non-exam assessments which are completed during the two year course which helps to decide the level awarded in the final certificate. Success or failure in these subjects is, therefore, not determined solely on the results of the terminal examinations at the end of Year 11. Even in those subjects that do not have such projects or assessments, it cannot be stressed sufficiently that these courses are a two year commitment requiring a consistently good effort.

Careers Education
Careers Education is taught as part of the PDE programme.
Year 10
Applications, Interviews and Presentations
In Year 10, you are encouraged to start thinking about your own needs and interests in preparation for making a decision about the step after GCSE. You should consider the variety of courses and subjects available in post-16 education; representatives from local schools and colleges will come into school to provide you and your parents with information. You are encouraged to develop confidence and skill both in written applications and in interview situations. You will prepare a CV, study interview techniques, examine your transferable skills and find out about your rights and responsibilities in the world of work.
Morrisby Profile
You will complete the Morrisby Profile test and have the opportunity to discuss the results with a representative of the company. The profile uses psychometric testing to identify strengths and weaknesses and then comprehensively considers your interests, talents and working preferences to suggest post-16 and post-18 subjects, qualifications and careers.
Sixth Form Forum
A Sixth Form Forum is held in September; Year 10 and 11 pupils are invited to attend with their parents. Preparation sessions are held so that you gain the maximum benefit from the event. A range of local independent and maintained schools are invited to answer your questions and provide prospectuses; they often bring Abbot’s Hill alumni along with them.
Year 11
Mock interviews and work experience
In Year 11, you have the opportunity to have a formal mock interview in preparation for your post GCSE applications. Towards the end of the summer term, when the examinations are over, you will undertake a week of work experience in order to gain a taste of a real working environment. This is a valuable opportunity to develop further personal and social skills as well as allowing an insight into specific areas of employment.
Throughout both Years 10 and 11, talks are given during PDE lessons from outside speakers on a variety of careers’ experiences and routes. This includes parents, alumni and industry representatives. Talks on different A-level subjects and wider post-16 options are also available.
Career Resources
Career resources are to be found in the Careers Room and are updated regularly. These include prospectuses for popular maintained and independent schools, colleges and universities. Books about job applications and information about a variety of professions are also provided. The Success at School website, which all pupils have individual access to, provides a wealth of guidance on choosing subjects, applying for jobs, work experience, higher education, study skills and also allows students to share their views in a range of polls and forums.
Career Mentors
Career mentors are appointed from Year 11 to provide a significant role of responsibility; pupils are given the opportunity to provide directional guidance to peers, write a termly newsletter and assist The Head of Careers with the development of the department.
The Head of Careers is available at a variety of times during the week to advise you and is always happy to be contacted by your parents to deal with any queries.

Many people working in law, accountancy and journalism have studied History because of the skills that are developed in critical thinking, reasoning and argument. History also encourages intellectual curiosity, analytical skills, independence of thought and decision-making. There are many other sectors of employment that directly relate to History, such as travel and tourism, museums, the media, libraries, as well as in government and academic research. In determining the past we can help to both understand the world we live in today and have a better idea about patterns in the future.
Course Content
We aim to provide thought–provoking, stimulating and challenging lessons to enable pupils to interpret the past for themselves. History is about who we are and the History Department aims to fire an enthusiasm and curiosity in pupils to find out more about the past.

Study
Miss Bradley, Senior SENDCo and DDSL, cbradley@abbotshill.herts.sch.uk
Study is offered as an option. Pupils will go to the Rose Garden which is a fully equipped space with 10 laptops, colour printer, a full range of textbooks and specification guides, WiFi which connects to pupils Chromebooks and teachers that have a wide knowledge of GCSE subjects taught. These lessons will be supervised and supported by a member of teaching staff, but will not be a ‘taught’ lesson. It is beneficial to get advice and help from the teacher supervising the study period.
Study provides a chance to catch up and consolidate work from your GCSE courses. It allows you to work on the quality of your GCSE studies rather than the quantity you have chosen to study. You will have to plan and record the work being done in these sessions which will help you to develop good study habits. Subject teachers may also recommend work for you to complete based on your attainment in their subject areas.
If you receive learning support lessons, these will be timetabled during a study lesson where possible.
Comments from Year 11 pupils
“Study is a good option to choose if you do a lot of extra-curricular activities in and out of school. Study will give you some time in school to prepare for assessments.”
“Study is great as I was able to seek the advice of subject teachers and get support on topics that I was finding difficult”
