Now is an exciting time in your school career. As you move through Year 9 and into Years 10 and 11, you will study fewer subjects, focusing on those that you enjoy. In the subjects you choose, you will develop a greater depth of knowledge and range of skills, working to the requirements of the GCSE examinations in 2027.
The number of GCSE courses that you will follow will vary between eight and ten. This depends on your choice of up to three option subjects and whether you study the Combined or Triple Science course.
The choice between these courses often depends on a student’s ability and interest in science. Teachers will select students based on their academic performance, interest level, and future aspirations. Triple Science is often recommended for students who are particularly strong in science and may wish to pursue it further, perhaps at an A-level or university level. Combined Science provides a solid foundation but with less specialisation, and it allows for more flexibility in a student’s overall subject choices.
When making your choices you should ask for as much advice as you need from your subject teachers, the Head of Pathways, your Form Tutor, your Head of Year and older students in Years 10 and 11. You must pay careful attention to the topics studied in the subjects that you are considering as well as the requirements of the course. For example, some subjects have Non-Examined Assessments (NEAs) which contribute towards the final grade. You can find out more information about which subjects have NEAs and what they entail in the NEA Booklet. We also expect you to talk to your parents about your choices so they can help you to make your decision.

It is our aim to give all of you your exact choice. Unfortunately, this is not always possible, which is why on the options form you must nominate reserve option choices. We will also need to see if a course is viable if a low number of students opt for it.
In the first instance, we advise that all students start with 3 options and a language in the summer term of Year 9 (when GCSE courses begin), unless you are currently not studying a language.
At the end of Year 9 you will be given the option of continuing with all your subjects or exchanging an option or language subject for Study.
Throughout Year 10 you will gain knowledge about possible careers that interest you, which will assist in shaping your professional aspirations. You will also research and plan a work experience placement – this is for one week towards the end of Year 10. Additionally, our Pathways Fair offers the opportunity to connect with visiting colleges and sixth forms. To enrich this journey, we host visiting speakers from various industries, offering insights and inspiration for your career path.
We use a platform called Unifrog which offers current and impartial advice on a broad range of career avenues. It will help you to make well-informed decisions about your future.
In Year 11 we will provide individualised advice and support in deciding on your post-16 study options, as well as helping you to prepare for College or Sixth Form interviews. We will continue to advise and support you with regards to the subjects or type of course you study, as well as the setting that is right for you. You will be expected to undertake personal research in this area and discuss it with your parents.

Subject Overview
History is highly regarded amongst colleges, universities and employers. Many people working in law, accountancy and journalism have studied History because of the skills that are developed in critical thinking, reasoning and argument. History also encourages intellectual curiosity, analytical skills, independence of thought and decision-making. There are many other sectors of employment that directly relate to History, such as travel and tourism, museums, the media, libraries, as well as in government and academic research. In determining the past we can help to both understand the world we live in today and have a better idea about patterns in the future.
Course Content
We aim to provide thought–provoking, stimulating and challenging lessons to enable students to interpret the past for themselves. History is about who we are and the History Department aims to fire an enthusiasm and curiosity in students to find out more about the past.
• Unit 1: Medicine in Britain, c1250 – present day. In this ‘Development Study’ of change and continuity students will investigate the various influences on medicine and treatment. This includes the study of the British sector of the Western Front during World War One.
• Unit 2: The Cold War 1943-1991. This ‘Depth Study’ will focus on the conflict between the USA and USSR that developed after the Second World War. This unit provides an insight into the world today, giving the students an understanding of how countries can be indirect conflict. The unit ends with the fall of the USSR.
• Unit 3: Early Elizabethan England, 1558-1588. In this unit students will learn how Queen Elizabeth established herself as the ruler of England and then overcame a series of challenges she faced. Students will learn why she was so successful and started England on the path of exploration that led to the British Empire.
• Unit 4: Weimar and Nazi Germany, 1918–39: This looks at dramatic events in recent German history. Students will learn about post-war Germany and the context in which one of the greatest modern dictators rose to power and changed German society.

Study is offered as an option. Students complete their independent study in the Library. These lessons will be supervised and supported by a member of staff but will not be a ‘taught’ lesson. It is beneficial to get advice and help during this time.
Study provides a chance to consolidate work from your GCSE courses. It allows you to work on the quality of your GCSE studies rather than the quantity you have chosen to study. You will have to plan and record the work being done in these sessions which will help you to develop good study habits. Subject teachers may also recommend work for you to complete based on your attainment in their subject areas.
If you receive learning support lessons, these will be timetabled during a study lesson where possible.
Comments from Year 11 students
“Study is a good option to choose if you do a lot of co-curricular activities in and out of school. Study will give you some time in school to prepare for assessments.”
“Study is great as I was able to seek the advice of subject teachers and get support on topics that I was finding difficult”
