Once upon a time in a place not so far away, slavery was thriving. It is a truly horrible stain on human society. However it was such a long time ago that it is no longer legal in the USA. But there is still a mistreatment of African Americans in America and this must change. The way they are being treated is affecting their future which has to stop. Yet there are ways that anyone can change these inequalities. These are very bad especially when we are entering the age of people wanting to be treated fairly. Something that is adding to the problem is social media portraying people of the African American race with erroneous stereotypes. Affirmative action is helping the inequalities and so are anti-hate events. However, social media is a contributor to the problem.

Affirmative Action A large contributor to the fixing of inequalities is Affirmative Action. It is very helpful to minorities such as African Americans. According to Newsela when Abigail Fisher sued University of Texas because an African American student who had got lower grades than her had got in, instead of her. Schools decide that they will give the benefit of the doubt to minority races because of a multitude of reasons. One of these reasons being that they might be treated differently and unfairly. Another reason is that professors and teachers think that they can make a student’s grade increase with the right treatment.

However many other professors and students did not agree with this. They think that whichever college or university people get in to it has to be based completely on the person’s grades in school. This is important because many people also believe in the same idea.

Anti-hate Events There are ways for regular people to stop hate speech against minorities. This happened on May 1, 2017 at Fenway Park in Boston. African American baseball player Adam Jones was positioned in outfield when he heard many racist remarks being shouted to him. Red Sox officials apologized soon after. The Boston Mayor

Martin Walsh stated that, “We are better than this”, and saying that they would punish behavior like this. The next day on May 2, 2017 when star player Adam Jones walked up to bat in the inning, he was met with a large round of applause from the entire stadium.

Pitcher Chris Sale stepped aside to let the applause continue. After the game, Adam Jones said “I don’t need all that stuff. Just be normal.” Being normal means that people of all races and religions are being treated fairly and equally. These people in Fenway Park stopped what was going to be a hate event and turned it into an inspirational event. Events that stop hate speech are happening in many places in the US. In Evanston, Illinois hundreds of people are protesting against hate events. They are holding an event called the “Race Against Hate” created due to a black basketball coach, Ricky Byrdsong, who was killed by a white supremacist. Another event was a teen basketball game called “Hoops Against Hate” in Yonkers, New York. All these events prove that regular people can and are helping turn a very sad event into something that creates hope and are very helpful to stopping hate acts against minorities.

Social Media Portrayal Finally, social media portraying African Americans as stereotypes is adding to the problem. On a social media site called Vine (now dead) had a star and thought of to be the best viner: King Bach. He was a very funny actor and I still think so. However he was most famously known on Vine for his portraying African American as stereotypes in a negative light. Such as black people always calling each other by an offensive term and while it is highly offensive for people of another race to call them by that term. Another stereotype is black people loving watermelon. This is where the saying “watermeloooooooon!” comes from. Another example is black people robbing others. One amongst many more is black people loving fried chicken, mainly focusing on KFC. I do not agree with these in anyway. These are completely false because they do not only apply to the African American race. These are also making people think that they are true and making the problem larger.

In conclusion I think that affirmative action, and anti-hate events are very helpful to solving the issue. However, social media portraying African American with stereotypes is not helping at all. Minorities have been treated unfairly for a long time in America. If we do not stop these stereotypes from getting out of hand, then the future generations will still be discriminated against. I implore you to stop believing in stereotypes. If possible try to change the ways that others think of people of the African American ethnicity.

Sexism in Society

By Malina Goldstein In most countries, women only earn between 60 and 75% of men’s wages even though they are doing the same work. That is an absurd difference that is not fair. Women do the same if not better quality of work, but get so much less. This goes for not only jobs and work, it goes for sports, army rights, education, politics and more. People should and need to get the courage to break sexist boundaries. After all, almost half of the world's population is women, so people need to start to treating women as equals.

Army Army communities must work to believe that women are just as strong as men. In a Newsela article called, “3rd Woman Passes Army's Toughest Test, Becomes Ranger School Graduate,” it says, “The Army wanted to determine whether or not to open more combat roles to women. Jaster wanted to help answer that question. She wanted to prove women are as strong as men.” The girl Jaster shows lots of commitment and determination to prove her point. For example, the ranger school is supposed to only take 62 days, however, it took her 180 days. Also, she has two young kids and had to miss one of their birthdays. Despite that, she kept going and completed the course. She showed no signs of weakness or surrendering. She certainly proved to me that women are just as strong as men. Standards in the ​army​ would be reduced as women lack the "physical and mental ability...to overcome and kill male enemy soldiers.” A british army colonel said that to a news website called, Sunday Express. The confidence in saying that is really disheartening. Women should get the chance to be seen as a capable figure. We are all humans, it doesn’t matter if you are female or male. Everyone should get the same opportunity to do what they want and do what they love to do. The fact that people are so ruthless about gender equality is quite sorrowful. People must not be unfair based off of gender.

Politics

The tiny portion of female politicians is far too small and it needs to be changed. As a matter of fact, in 2015, there were only 21 female heads of state in the entire world. Also, less than 20% of the US Congress is female. Think about it, how are we supposed to attempt to make our world a better place if only ⅕ of the government worldwide is female? People need to start to look past their own opinions of what they want to happen and need to start thinking of what is best. Society should give opportunities to women. Since hardly anyone has given the chance to women, no one knows if it will be good or bad. It is extremely unfair and just flat out ridiculous and here is another reason why. On the website, The Guardian, it says, An inordinately crass tweet (hastily deleted) sent from ​Donald Trump’s Twitter account asked​: “If Hillary Clinton can’t satisfy her husband, what makes her think she can satisfy America?” My first reaction was, “No way!” I could not believe how sassy that was. It’s so rude to say that to someone especially when other people see it. I bet Donald Trump wouldn’t say that to a man. It doesn't make sense why people are sexist. There isn’t a reason why people do it. Think about that, why do people do sexist things? What’s the point of it?

Sports Sports are something everyone should be included in, so females must be included.

According to the website, Women in Sport, only 18% of qualified coaches are women.

Additionally, only 9% of senior coaches are female. Also, colleges have done some research and they found out that hardly any to no females teach men’s sports teams. Those numbers are way to low. Right now, you might be thinking, “How do you know that only a few women tried out to be coaches?” Well I am here to assure you that many did, but so did many men. People chose the men over women because they believe in tradition, they believe in what everyone else is doing, they don’t give women an chance. Have you ever heard of “girl-push ups” or “lady-pushups?”

Those are push ups on your knees which make it easier. That wording of that women can’t do the same thing as men, but they can. You might not realize it now, but I certainly hope you will in the future. If you don’t see that women are just as skillful as men, then you need to try harder to see it. Sure, men have more testosterone which increases their athletic abilities, but people underlook women by ​way​ too much. This is a serious issue that needs to be resolved.

To conclude, women should be treated the same as men. They need to be treated equally in the army, in politics, in sports and in many more topics like education and jobs. They deserve

to get an opportunity to do what they love and the fact that people don’t support them is really wistful. We all need to make a change because if we don’t, then the world is going to go on with 50% of the world being treated unfairly and being treated like crap compared to men. To make a change, stand up for what's right. Say one word, STOP. That’s all it takes. One word can change someones world. If you are witnessing something that someone is doing that they usually would not do to a man, do something, say something. Stand up for yourself and for other people. It’s not right for people to be treated this way, especially when 7.6 billion people are probably laying in bed doing nothing to stand up and helping fight for women's rights. Sexism is not a side issue and needs to be seen as something important.

Hawking, a man that had a serious case of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), a virus that affects the body so that the person is paralyzed​, People with disabilities want to be treated the same as others, after all we’re humans and so are they. There are many reasons to why they feel bad towards themselves.

One reason people feel they can’t succeed is because they feel that they are not capable to do sports. 18-year-old Hasaan Hawthorne didn’t sit down just because he had two stubs instead of legs. “He competed against at a high school wrestling tournament in Huntsville, Alabama. On the mat, Hawthorne moved so quickly that his uniform was a blur of yellow and green. He had a perfect 37-0 record and a state title”. Hawthorne had inspired many to follow their own passion, he has shown a lot of people that appearance does not reveal a person’s heart.

Another reason many new generations of kids feel they cannot succeed is bullying. Many of these kids get bullied because of their appearance. Bullying is a very serious threat to young kids as shown in several cases; kids to commit suicide, this has to stop. Many people with disabilities can find jobs because of their appearance and their capabilities within them, causing them to think they can’t do anything. Sometimes, bystanders don’t necessarily help to think how hard it might be, they desperately need ​compassion to ​think they are “normal”. An example is shown by ​www.stopbullying.gov​, stating that Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are at of being bullied and left out by kids their own age. “A study of 8-17-year-olds, researchers found that children with ASD were more than three times as likely to be bullied as their peers.”

In conclusion, people with disabilities feel different from others that are around because they are discouraged, which is obviously not right to do. There are people that try to protest against these acts, but it does not affect a lot the majority of the bad world’s ways that desperately need to stop. This is where you come in, you need to help society stop such acts and to help people with disabilities feel they actually have abilities, and we together humanity might even conquer the word “Different”.

Driverless Car have the potential to Change Lives

In the U.S today an average of 29.2 miles will be driven. 29.2 miles might not seem like a lot to you but if you live in a big city, but traffic can greatly add to your time in a car. Elderly and disabled people miss out on this necessity for daily life. They have trouble getting to where they need to go. Driverless cars would also save them the need to ​pay ​for a taxi. This makes life a lot harder for these people. Elderly and disabled people should have driverless cars for free so they can live like they are a normal person.

Blind Man Drives Alone In a Driverless Car Steve Mahan is legally blind, and lives in Austin Texas.

Google says they have tested there driverless cars with ​2 million miles​ of driving on public roads. Mahan was the first person to sit in the car that was not a Google employee. Mahan said that ​"I had the greatest time driving around a neighborhood in Austin.

It was so much fun, being aware that the vehicle was navigating intersections, and I was in good hands, perfectly safe." Mahan sat in the car without anybody by his side. Mahan believes that these cars could change the life of people that have similar problems as him. ​John Krafcik has good news for people that have the same beliefs as Mahan, as he said that “We’re close to bringing this to a lot of people.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that “60 million people are either deaf or blind”. If these people were open to transportation whenever they need it there employment rates would go up significantly. 60 million people is a lot and driverless cars would allow them to be like a normal person.

Elderly People Get the Chance to Drive Once Again Driverless cars can not only just help people with disabilities but also people that are too old to drive.

There was a survey done in 2008 on people that were 65 years of age or older, the survey was about their driving habits. Only 15% of them decided not to drive because of bad weather, traffic or the dark, but a lot of them were very careful about when they would drive. Driverless cars could allow all the elderly people to be able to drive all the time.

Elderly people that may have hearing problems, can still

know all about what's happening. There is a screen in the car that shows what's happening around them like the route they are going and the traffic ahead or behind them said The Washington Post. The camera on the top can also show the cars, people and cyclists around the driver. Driverless cars will give extreme amounts of independence to the elderly people.

Google's Driverless Cars are Safe Google's driverless cars are the best type of driving. Google says that they have been working on driverless cars for almost a decade now, and they have been fine tuned to the max. The car has sensors that will keep you safe at all times. The top sensor can detect any object around you in every direction.

There are strong computers inside the car, with backup systems in case of a failure. The cars will be able to pull over any time you want by the click of a button. You can also push a help button that will allow you to have voice commands between the control center. Driverless cars can even be ​better​ than human controlled cars. If you are about to be in a car crash because someone is about to run a red light, or jay walk, the cars sensors could pick up on that. That could protect you and the person you would have hit. Driverless cars would also help make traffic flow better, reducing your time in the car.

Driverless Cars are also helping the environment, because most of them are completely electrical and do not run on gasoline. All the sensors and strong computers prove that driverless cars are definitely safe for public use. ​Photo Driverless cars can allow elderly and people with disabilities to not have to pay for transport. We can help prevent global warming with electrical cars, and with less traffic.

Driverless cars are definitely safe for disabled people to use. All these positives lead to a great mode of transportation for people in need of it, and can even be a better alternative for people that can drive. These cars can be very expensive though and elderly people or people with disabilities don’t usually have a lot of money to spare on a car. If you know someone that could benefit from one of these cars, try to help them get to the amount of money needed to buy a driverless car.

Don’t Let the Judgement of Others Stop You

There is a place, where people are discriminated against because they are different. A place where, because some people are scared of the different and the new, not everyone gets the same opportunities. In this world, the pressures and ideas of society, cause some people to live in fear of being themselves. People can’t stand up for what they believe, because they are afraid to be different. This is not a world I want to live in; sadly I don’t get much of choice. Although our world is getting better, it is nowhere near perfect. The majority of the world is hiding behind walls, making themselves the picture of what is expected. They are scared to be themselves, because the world expects everyone to be one way, but not everyone's the same. People need to stop thinking different is bad, and start appreciating the diversity that makes the world colorful.

Without the diversity of culture, and people, the world would be incredibly gray.

Stopping people from showing pride in their religion is one of the ways that we stop the world from accepting diversity. In the Newsela article, “Boxing's Old-school Rules, a Teen Girl Says, Must Catch Up With The Times,” a girl is told she can’t do something she loves while still staying true to her religion. Amaiya Zafar, 15-year-old Muslim girl, fell in love with the sport of boxing, but boxing rules do not allow her to wear her hijab. A hijab, a religious symbol, is not only important to Amaiya’s religion but a critical part of her identity. Amaiya, like many people, has pride of where she comes from and her family's heritage. Boxing rules don’t only stop Amaiya from wearing her hijab, but wouldn't let cover her arms and legs. When the head of USA Boxing, Michael Martino, addressed the situation he said, "We have 30,000 amateur boxers in the United States… if you make allowances for one religious group, what if another comes in and says we have a different type of uniform we have to wear? You have to draw a line someplace." This proves that there are people in this world that can’t see change as good. I believe he was way out of line to say such a thing. Sometimes change is hard, but that doesn't mean it shouldn’t be done. Amaiya, like so many others, loves something and should have the right to pursue her dreams. Amaiya is working hard to pursue her beliefs and dreams; no one has the right to tell her that she can’t do what she loves, just because she believes in something different.

We should have the right to be able to choose who we want to be, and should not be stopped by the judgment of others. The Newsela article “High school senior seeks homecoming crown to get recognized as a girl” is based on a transgender girl who is finding out who she really is. Cassidy Campbell, a 16-year-old girl, ran for prom queen, but she did not only do it for herself. Cassidy said, “... I’m doing this for the kids who can’t be themselves.” She knows that there are people who are afraid to be who they want, and she wants to be a strong role model who inspires others to stand up for themselves. In a the Newsela article, “​Mazy is learning to be herself, with the support of her family,” ​a lot like Cassidy, Mazy is also trying to find herself in a body she doesn't believe is right for her. Up until second grade, still identifying as a boy, Mazy was constantly teased and started coming home every day crying. On the last day of second grade Mazy finally went to school as a girl, her mom said, “... It was the first time I saw Mazy

smile in I don’t know how long…” Mazy has all the right to be who she chooses, and no one should stop her. “Making her be someone who she isn’t isn’t going to make her happy…” said Mazy’s mother. I completely agree, I just wish others would think the same. Just because Mazy chooses to be someone different than her birth certificate says, does not give people the right to judge her or tell her she can’t be who she wants.

The images society has developed of what is “good enough” and “right” need to change.

We need to see everyone as beautiful, no matter what they believe, how they look or who they chose to be.

We, as human beings, feel the need to be accepted, and a lot of the time bend over backward to be seen as “okay” in others eyes. In order to make a change in our world, we first need to be able to accept ourselves as beautiful. We need to stop surrounding ourselves with people and ideas that are damaging to our self-esteem. It is hard to find comfort in a world where everyone judges, but we all need to get to a point where we don’t change everything about ourselves because one person calls us ugly or says we can’t do something.

We also need to be able to accept other people. No one will ever be the exact same, and we should never think that, but we all have similarities that we need to acknowledge and differences we need to celebrate. Because a world where everyone is the same is a gray and colorless place, we need to break down the walls, and concepts, that divide our planet.

Muslim women should be allowed to wear headscarf during sports.

Ananya and Muslim women should wear a hijab during boxing. Once upon a time, there was a teenager girl called Ananya. She loves only sport, which is boxing nothing else. She was not allowed to wear any hijab in boxing. Why would hijabs not be allowed during boxing? She didn’t have any choice, so she just did whatever the coach said. She started crying like an animal. My thoughts are that during boxing, she should be allowed to wear hijab. Muslim women should be allowed to wear hijab in sports like boxing. 57% Muslim women wear hijab.

All Muslim women should wear hijab during sports if they want to.

Wearing a headscarf should be allowed in golf and any other sport. Noor Ahmed loves to wear headscarf, even though nobody is wearing one during golf. According to Newsela, Noor Ahmed is a teenager who loves to wear headscarves during golf. She thinks that headscarf is important and good for safety. No one cares about her headscarf during golf. Nobody wears a headscarf except for Noor during golf. No one feels like talking to her just because of her headscarf. I think, it should be allowed to wear a headscarf during golf. In conclusion, I think we should be respectful about people’s religions and believes during golf.

A muslim women is wearing a headscarf during fencering. fencing is kind of sword fighting. No one gets hurt during fencer. It would just be a tiny tap of the swords. She doesn’t get hurt just because of her headscarf. Headscarf is important for her life and she is a muslim women, so she had to wear it. Another thing is she is also wearing headscarf, so that people can recognize her that she is a muslim women. I think this is the right thing to do.

A basketball player can wear headscarf during basketball. According to Newsela, A muslim women is allow to wear headscarf which is awesome. Bilqis Abdul Qadir use to think they couldn’t wear headscarf but now they can really do. I think it is a good thing. Before they don’t allow headscarf but now they are allowing but why!!!. They allow because it is important for muslim women to wear this headscarf and for safety during basketball. I think it is a better idea because if muslim women will wear the headscarf, then they will feel comfortable. I think we should allow muslim women to wear headscarf during basketball.
