ESSO is a multicultural live music band from Chicago. The group invokes polystylistic sounds from the same urban streets that birthed house music and movements in slam poetry, punk rock and free jazz. Join us for a celebration of Ukrainian culture with live music by the ODUM Bandurists, a dance performance by the Haydamaky Ukrainian Dance Ensemble, pysanka egg demonstration and display of cultural items. The ODUM School of Bandura features student musicians, with the goal of establishing a connection to Ukrainian music. The Haydamaky Ukrainian Dance Ensemble of the St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Bloomingdale preserves Ukrainian culture through dance, featuring authentic costumes and choreography. Illinois Libraries Present: An Evening with Michelle Zauner
Wednesday, May 18, 7–8 p.m. / Zoom Join us for an evening with musician and author Michelle Zauner as she discusses her music career and her bestselling debut memoir, Crying in H Mart. Jessica Hopper joins her in conversation. Michelle Zauner is best known as a singer and guitarist who creates indie pop under the name Japanese Breakfast. Releases like Psychopomp (2016) and Soft Sounds from Another Planet (2017) earned critical acclaim along with Jubilee (2021), recently nominated for two GRAMMY® awards.
Jessica Hopper is a music critic, producer and author based in Chicago. In a career spanning more than 20 years, Hopper has earned acclaim as a music journalist. She has written for GQ, Rolling Stone, The New York Times Magazine, The Guardian, Elle and the Chicago Reader. She is the author of The First Collection of Criticism by a Living Female Rock Critic and co-founded Golden Teapot, a production company. Mishur offers a deeper look into the work of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement. A leading contributor to the movement, Morris founded his first decorative arts design firm in 1861. Over the following decades he collaborated with his wife, Jane Burden, along with fellow artists. Enjoy an overview of works by Morris and his colleagues, including paintings, furniture, stained glass, textiles and decorative arts.
