The Not So Concrete Jungle explores the potential of timber construction within mid-rise residential and commercial construction. Situation alongside the Queensboro in New York City, the project aims to activate a site that has sat unused for decades. A combination of gallery spaces, outdoor public gathering spaces, a sports complex, educational facility, and 9-story residential building activate the site, which stretches from Vernon Boulevard out toward the East River. The Not So Concrete Jungle also aims to critique existing methods of construction through the use of more sustainable material within the construction of each building. This is primarily achieved through the use of cross-laminated timber and plywood within most of the site's construction. Each building is built according to code and seeks to innovate upon currently existing building code regarding timber construction in particular, thus paving the way for a more sustainable form of construction.
