Here at Ag Youth, that old saying “success may kill me” is being played out. It all started a couple of months ago as we were selecting the 2021 Ag Youth Photo Team.
This year we put in place more requirements to be selected. Over 80 applied, 45 made the sift. One had to drop, and that left us with 44 outstanding young people. They ranged from third grade to college seniors. They came early, stayed late, communicated, made no excuses. Wow! 44 of them! 44 Great Ones! As educators, parents or volunteers, you’ve all seen that spark in a kid’s eye. That moment when they want to learn more. That natural desire to learn a new skill. Doesn’t happen all the time, so when it does, it’s a special moment. We saw it in their eyes at OYE. It makes what we do here at Ag Youth Magazine worthwhile. We weren’t prepared (we will be next year), but several members on the team stepped up to edit photos. Our college senior had learned how at OSU, and she put her talents to good use. The rest had to be trained on-the-job. Right there at the booth in Barn 3 at OYE. We slowed down, shared our knowledge, and marveled at the work ethic of these youth. Now, we’re talking about thousands of photos. The first Friday of OYE, 12,000 photos were downloaded. A few days later, we passed 48,000, and the total continues to climb. And yes, we are still processing photos. Stay patient. We’ll get them all posted. Should be done by the time you read this. We’re just in awe of such a blessing to work with such a terrific group of youth. To the 2021 Ag Youth Photo Team, GREAT JOB! Thanks for all your hard work. Page 6 - April/May 2021

National FFA Week is a week highly celebrated by agriculture students; this year the students at Rush Springs participated in activities almost every day. The week started off with FFA members wearing their official dress to church. Then, on Monday, staying after school until 7:30 to unload and collect Blue and Gold meat sales. Our officers then went to the Lions Club to perform the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and talk over lunch to community members about what they are involved in, how they started and why they love FFA. The next day, FFA officers went to the local elementary school to speak to kids about FFA and why they should choose to be involved in it when they’re older. They played games such as “pig, pig, cow” (an FFA spin on duck, duck, goose) to get them talking about farm animals, and they made sure to read them books about planting crops and farm life so they could accurately learn about agriculture. Next our officers showed up at our Community Life Center at 6:00 a.m to cook breakfast as a “thank you” for our teachers and delivered food and refreshments to local business owners and first-responders. They were back at it again at 6:00 a.m on Saturday to cook more breakfast in preparation for the Rush Springs Local Livestock Show and auction off the desserts they had made for members of the town to come support our chapter. Then, right before our annual livestock show, our officers surprised our ag teacher with a gift basket as a small thank you for everything he does for us and our group. Then began the competition where our show kids, officers and volunteers came together to have not only the regular events but also a special olympics, a faculty showmanship competition and an “old folks” showmanship challenge! Overall our chapter had a very successful National FFA week, we want to thank everyone that helped us during this week and anyone that helps us at any other time of the year. We hope everyone involved had an amazing time and learned a lot from the experience! agyouth.com

By Lindsy Reppen, Howe FFA Reporter Starting in 1948, the National FFA Board of Directors designated a week-long tradition to recognize George Washington’s example and legacy as a leader and farmer. For the past 73 years, FFA members across the country have taken part in agricultural, leadership and service-based activities during National FFA Week. There is no better week of the year to recognize community members, local businesses and school supporters. Howe FFA hosted FFA Week March 1st-5th, which included a multitude of activities. Each FFA Weekday was filled with activities to get all Howe FFA members and Howe students involved. Starting Monday off with a Staff Appreciation Lunch members served lunch to Howe staff and teachers. Howe FFA officers hosted Virtual Reading of Agricultural books in association with Read Across America Week, where four books were chosen that promoted agricultural advocacy

to pre-K through 1st grade students. Tuesday members and officers provided tractor and animal safety lessons with a petting zoo to the daycare and pre-K through 1st grade students. The petting zoo included llamas, baby goats, calf, rabbits, fish, crustacean, and a pig. Wednesday included former Oklahoma state FFA president Brandon Baumgarten. Mr. Baumgarten gave a wonderful presentation about leadership in his presentation he ad-

dressed student involvement, motivation, and professionalism. Thursday and Friday involved group pictures and FFA games and competitions. FFA week is an opportunity for Howe FFA to promote the diversity and relevance of the FFA organization for all students and community members. The advocacy of FFA and the importance of agriculture will continue to grow and thrive in the Howe community.

This year Carl Albert High School hosted their sixth annual nonprofit Welders’ Rodeo on March 5, an event that brings teams together from all across of Oklahoma. This year, an unexpected snow delayed the competition two weeks which conflicted with other dates. Of the 60 teams registered, 45 teams competed from 30 schools. The teams are composed of two team members. They competed for a custom belt buckle for the two team members and for their advisor, along with other prizes like welding helmets and welding gear that was graciously donated. The event started just before eight in the morning and concluded around seven in the afternoon and consisted of building a charcoal grill and a T-post puller in which they were able to take home with another gracious donation by Kingfisher Pipe. The teams had to use a DC welder and a MIG to show their welding and fabrication skills that were judged based on their abilities, which includes how well and how proper they welded their projects. This year, Carl Albert was represented by Cole McNeely and Brody Sanger, both seniors, who placed 11th. First place went Reese Davis and Caleb Graham of Sand Springs while Jenks and Stigler followed them as they took second and third place.

Then a few days later on March 10 we competed at OYE in the Ag Mechanics with our Smoke, Grill, and Boil Trailer. By L.W. Peck 33 years ago I wrote the first Hook N Chase article. It was about how to rig a black worm weedless, a technique I still use today. Since then, just guessing, I’ve authored close to 300 articles. And, some of you have actually read them all. Some have been educational, some funny, some really entertaining, and realistically a few really bad. All in all, it’s been fun. I actually plan someday to include them all in a book. I don’t know if anybody will want to read it, but it would be cool to have them all under one cover. So why am I telling you all this? It’s spring and I should be fishing, chasing a turkey or planting a feed crop (that hogs will probably eat) for next year‘s quail. No, I’m not quitting writing because it’s one of my favorite duties. This summer and next fall you’ll see some big changes! No, once again. I’m not quitting! The big Page 22 - April/May 2021
changes are cool. First, we have to figure them out, but the idea is planted. And, you must plant the tree before you sit in the shade. Trenton, my grandson, and I are cultivating that seed as we speak. Bigger, better, timely, print, Facebook,YouTube, on and on. From that first article about how to rig a black worm written on a yellow notebook (by the way, this was written on a yellow notebook, too) Hook N Chase is changing and change is good! To my loyal readers, it will be enough the same you’ll like it. It’s going to be enough different that you will enjoy it. It will be fresh. It will be enlightening. It will be readable, seeable and touchable. Look Out Ag Youth Loyal Readers! It’s coming. It’s technologically advanced. It’s the Ag Youth way, and it will even allow us to brag on more kids! For now, though, let’s just go fishin!

TRENTON’S POST
Hey Guys! It’s me Trenton. The last few years that I’ve been writing this we’ve been talking a lot about goats and showing. I’ve decided to change this article up a bit. We are going to move away from talking about goats and showing and talk more about everything outdoors – hunting , fishing , you name it, we’ll talk about it. The other day after I got home from OYE, I got an invitation to join my goat-showing friends from Burlington to go fishing with them at Kaw Lake. I live close to Kaw Lake; only about 20 minutes away. Kaw Lake is managed by the Army Corps of Engineers and is about 17,000 acres big. It is known for its catfishing and spoonbill fishing that you can do below the dam.
During this trip with the Sims family, I tried spoonbill fishing for the first time. I learned there is a certain way to snag a spoonbill. You take a massive treble hook with a big weig ht below it and then you cast your line. Once you cast it 50 yards or so, you let it sink and then you start yanking and reeling. Once, I yanked it about five times. I got hung up in other people’s line or underbrush. I went throug h about seven hooks and never snag ged a spoonbill. Maybe next time! After time below the dam, we jumped on the boat and went jug fishing for catfish. We check 20 jugs or so and most of the jugs had a fish on them. One of the big gest ones that we caug ht was a blue catfish and weig hed 25 pounds. We also did some cast netting. We caug ht a smallmouth bass that we released back. And, we captured a 0.005 ounce catfish – let’s say he was little – that I broug ht home. My mom was proud! I hope you enjoy my pictures from my trip to Kaw Lake with the Sims Family. The 2020-2021 team members include Katie Kempen, Maddie Schroeder, Logan Jackson, Kristen Massingill, Lauren Erickson, Mesa Ware, Andi Theodore, Kyntlie Wiles, Rylee Simpson, Adam Erickson and Hunter May.
The most decorated team in the history of Connors State Livestock judging, legendary season has finally come to an end by being named “Team of the Year”. This award is the junior college coaches association version of National Champions. The 2020-2021 Cowboys also had 4 of the 15 Academic All-Americans, including the 1st and 2nd overall ranked All-Americans (Kristen Massingill and Logan Jackson). The 2020-2021 team ends their career at CSC by winning 14 of the 19 contests they participated in, from the start of their freshman year until their last sophomore contest. The team finished reserve high team overall at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and also won the swine judging and reasons divisions as well. Aiden Spencer Makes Community Impact Through STEM By Mia Mitchell, State 4-H Reporter 18-year-old Aidan Spencer, an Oklahoma 4-H member is making an impact on his community, country, and world through his STEM based initiatives. Spencer, a native of Gettysburg Pennsylvania and now Oklahoma County resident, has been a member of 4-H for six years. His main project areas include STEM and civic engagement. Spencer says “I was introduced to the

4-H program through STEM so that was a natural progression for me. Through my work in STEM, I realized that there was a significant lack of education about these projects in my community. [I realized that] not enough people were informed about STEM education which ties into my citizenship project” One of his projects, Monkey See, Monkey Do, works to fund, and form First Lego League or FLL teams that

compete in tournaments. Aidan spends nearly 30 hours weekly on his projects! When asked how he finds motivation he replied “It is not so much the personal satisfaction of doing everything yourself, but sharing the joy with others, life has been crazy and is getting crazier, Spencer said with a laugh. So, giving people the opportunity to find their passion gives me the passion to continue. Try to experience all that you can. Try not to limit yourself to one area. STEM is in agriculture, it is in citizenship it is in everything.” Last October, Spencer was selected as a pillar winner for the National Youth in Action awards for his project work in his STEM projects. This award not only allowed him to become the national spokesperson for the STEM pillar of 4-H but he also was awarded a $5,000 scholarship as well. Through this award he has been able to speak at several national conferences, attend events and even met Bill Nye the Science Guy. He currently serves as his local 4-H clubs president, the Oklahoma county Vice-President as well. His projects allowed him to organize over 60 events and raise over $7,000 for STEM based projects. Looking forward, Aidan wants to continue his STEM initiatives and is in the process of working on some very exciting events. He is planning on pursuing a degree in business, and continue his work in STEM education. Oklahoma 4-H is excited to see where he will go in the future!
