A VERY SATISFYING PULL WHEN HE IS AWAY

It is alright for him jetting off on yet another holiday, the excuse that he uses is that he is visiting family but that does not wash with me. Just before he left he had the decency to finish off the job the young boss had started which was moving a hen house on this farm. Shed 1 has the largest distance between sites which involves pulling it through a dip in the ground. Once the washing and disinfecting was completed, with Bogdan to hand telling me when it was in the correct position, I did the final pull in two moves, the whole job went perfectly.

And then when he was away a call came in with a request to move a bogged sprayer. I cannot begin to explain just how excited I was at the thought. This is only my second recovery of 2024, the first being the Captain’s tractor in March. It always makes it more special when they have already tried and failed - this time not with one tractor but two, the second being over 300hp. As he was away it was a joy to be driven there by a more caring and younger operator, he sensibly assessed the situation before deciding that it would best to pull it out forwards. At first I was attached to chains they already had been using which broke every time I took the strain. With a stronger chain out she came nice and slowly and once back on dry ground was able to travel under its own power. Another happy customer and successful mission to add to my long list of achievements.

I am sorry I did not look my best at the Border Union, thank you for making the effort to visit. I was chuffed to see so many proudly displaying ‘I love Wendy’ badges.

ENRICH YOUR SOIL AND BOOST CROPS FOR FREE WHILST REMOVING CO

We spread crushed basalt rock on agricultural land, enriching soil fertility, supporting healthy crop growth and stabilising soil pH. This locally-sourced rock also removes CO2 from the atmosphere through a natural process known as enhanced rock weathering. It’s a win-win for your land and the environment.

WHAT IS BASALT ROCK?

Basalt is a mineral-rich volcanic rock that has been applied as a soil amendment for hundreds of years. It’s a product of the Scottish aggregate industry which is screened to ensure it's safe for agricultural use. Our basalt is suitable for all crops, including pasture, and has been approved for use in certified organic farming systems.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS FOR FARMERS?

Our basalt is supplied and spread free of charge or heavily subsidised, using local contractors who know the roads and the land. Farmers can expect to see the following benefits:

Nutrient uptake: Crushed basalt releases magnesium, calcium, potassium and other nutrients, boosting soil health and making your crops more pest-resistant.

Improved soil pH: As basalt weathers, it helps maintain the target pH of the soil. Basalt delivers a slow release of alkalinity to stabilise soil pH at optimum levels for longer.

Higher crop yield: An initial trial with The University of Newcastle showed crop yield was on average 15% higher (9.3% and 20.5% between ploughed and direct drill amended plots) following the application of crushed basalt.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

Farmers and landowners in the central belt of Scotland and North East Scotland.

WHY?

With the help of farmers like you, our mission is to remove 1 billion tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere to make the planet livable for future generations.

If you are interested in enriching your soils whilst removing CO2, contact Joe Ritchie on 07400 858 333 or email joe@un-do.com

On Our Farm

August 7th 2024

Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley and oats are grown, 500 Angus cattle are finished annually, 8000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose and 8,000 organic point of lay pullets are reared each year.

So far harvest 2024 is turning out to be one of the worst harvests ever with yields well below our five year average. It seems to be that heavy ground has fared particularly badly. Even my neighbour who is the best arable farmer in the area said that this is the worst harvest for over 20 years! The relentless wet weather throughout the growing season combined with the lack of sunshine has created the perfect storm for very low yields.

Craft winter malting barley did just over 6t/ha, quality was ok and there was plenty of straw despite the low yield. Rhodes High Erucic oilseed rape has done around 2t/ha, the fields have gone backwards since Christmas with the wet April being the final nail in the coffin. It is by far and away the worst rape I have ever grown and I could not wait to get them cut as the fields looked an absolute mess. It is being collected today and hopefully will go away without any problems.

The great thing about farming is that there is very little time to get too down over a bad harvest. The rape stubbles have been mucked, sumoed and will be left until we drill wheat in mid-September. Winter barley stubbles have had digestate, gypsum, and are now being sown with oilseed rape. Over the past few years we have drilled the rape with a sumo one pass system which has worked reasonably well. The contractor is no longer offering this service so we have reverted back to sumoing or ploughing then combi drilling.

On a more positive note grass growth has picked up again and second cut silage was of high quality with reasonable yields. The organic red clover ley was the standout performer, it has since had hen muck and we will be hopefully taking a third cut. We need all the silage we can get this year as we have converted another barn to house cattle.

The local show season has been in full swing over the past few weeks. The Newtown St Boswells and district farmers’ club show was a great success. The new layout proved very popular, the weather was excellent and visitor numbers continue to increase every year post Covid. The results for the stock and crop competition can be found on page 51.

Once again the Agrimart stand was very busy at the Border Union show. A huge thanks to Shaun for all the hard work he puts in behind the scenes to make the two days run so smoothly. We have all been glued to the Olympics over the past week and the children have become overnight experts in Greco Roman wrestling and canoe cross to name a few. I love the Olympics and it is a welcome distraction from farming especially this year! A special mention to the GB rowing team who had an incredible regatta and especially the mens VIII and womans quad.

Talking......Business with Edwin Thompson August 2024

Jack Frater is an Agricultural Consultant at Edwin Thompson, based in their office in Galashiels. Jack specialising in Farm and Estate Management.

Succession planning can be somewhat of an emotive and sometimes a morbid subject, especially when it involves a complex family dynamic. But not addressing the issue at all can make things more complicated and ultimately more costly for a potential successor.

It is a widely known fact that farming has one of the worst accident rates out of any industry, so without wanting to sound too pessimistic it is important to start the succession conversation sooner rather than later, as you don’t know what the future may hold. The first step is to have an open and honest discussion with any potential successors, they may want to continue to farm or they may not, but their response will probably dictate what route you go down. This may be a difficult concertation at first and there will likely be things that you cannot agree on, but avoiding such discussions means that no middle ground will be found.

The second and possibly most important thing to do is to seek professional advice from your accountant and solicitor to determine the most suitable and most tax efficient options available to you. With a new Labour government now in Westminster and possible changes to inheritance tax rules on agricultural land on the agenda in the near future, it is important that you are well informed about what these mean to you and your situation.

Thirdly, have a Will in place. We have seen a number of situations in recent years where someone has died without a written Will. Such situations can take an extended period of time to sort out and at great expense to those involved, both financially and emotionally.

If your successors are keen to continue with the farming business, consideration should be given as to when to bring them into the partnership, or in as director if this has not already been done. This will allow for a bit of continuity and hopefully make any transfer a bit smoother.

If you are looking to retire, or take a step back but your successor is not in a position to take on the farming business just yet, there are a number of options available to allow you to maintain your active farmer status, and the tax benefits that come with it, this can range from contract farming or share farming agreements to grass park lets and shepherding contracts. The Farm Advisory Service recently announced a reset for the number of specialist advice reports a farming business in Scotland can apply for, as well as an increase in the amount of funding available to assist with such things as succession planning, therefore we would encourage anyone in this situation to make full use of it.

On a separate matter, thank you to everyone who visited the Edwin Thompson stand at the Border Union Show, and a huge congratulations to all those involved with putting on such a great event.

Talking......North of the Forth

August 5th 2024

Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise.

Harvest started here on the 10th July with the Hybrid Rye being cut whole crop as feedstock for a local anaerobic digestor. We really need rye to yield 40t/ha plus to make a decent margin. Last year we comfortably beat this target with 46.88t/ha. Sadly, this year we dropped to just over 35t/ha. Another casualty of the prolonged wet weather. When the forage harvester was munching its way through the crop it looked 12 to 18 inches shorter than normal and probably the heads weren’t as full either. The sheer weight of rain over the winter, the land not being fully dry at harvest followed by a dry spell, means the rye stubble is now like concrete. I tried to dig down with a spade to see the damage but nearly broke my wrist. I may try again but will need at least a pickaxe to make any impression. An extra pass with the subsoiler ahead of planting OSR is needed. The cost and legacy of winter 2023/24 keep mounting. What is bad for rye is obviously great for wild oats. Having previously been on top of this old foe it seems the historic seed bank has been patiently waiting for a year like this. Patches of oats have sprung up where there haven’t been before, and rouging has been a long and tiring job. My wife has led the rouging battle with a team consisting of anyone available from friends and family. Our youngest rougers were seven and our oldest 82. It’s not a bad job when the sun is shining and there is a good team to keep morale high. Quite a different thing when the oilskins are required, and you find yourself alone in a seemingly endless patch. It is however a job I get a bit nostalgic about. Having done it since an early age it hasn’t changed over the years, covering every corner of the farm on foot, slowing life down and reconnecting with the land. My kids maybe don’t see it quite so romantically yet…

Along with wild oats most grass weeds seem to be prospering this year. Some crops look particularly dirty and will need a preharvest glyphosate to clean them up. I will at least spray every endrig to stop the encroachment of grasses from dyke sides. We can grow a good crop of grass weeds on this land and it does concern me as I ponder the move to a system involving less ploughing. A move to min till would definitely require some robust chemistry and ploughing within the rotation to keep the grasses at bay.

OSR looks ready to harvest from the 11th August with spring barley and wheat following closely afterwards. Before all that I have the small matter of an SQC audit and eight breeding stags to deantler. Wish me luck!

No doubt climate change will be the guilty party that has given such poor yields this harvest. A long and wet winter followed by a dull and cloudy summer have conspired to reduce our output well below the 10 year average and produce results that are some of the lowest for a long time. Years ago we would have just called it weather and accepted it for what it is, today we have to lay the blame squarely on ‘someone’s’ shoulders. The rape was harvested on July 31st which is exceptionally early. I remember in the past sowing next years crop before the previous years had been combined and that was probably in the days we desiccated with Reglone. We are very fortunate to have daughters who love to bring their children to stay here for a week or more in the summer holidays. With 3 grandchildren living next door we have a total number of nine aged from 13 to 2. Meals revolve between the two houses as well as picnics on the Ale - the river that is our march for a 1.5 miles. There are four horses/ponies to ride, hills to climb as well as a never ending variety of farm machines to watch. They are very lucky to have so many cousins within a tight range of ages and to enjoy each others company. As one family live in Nairobi and the other in London it is special for all of us when we can get together.

The contrast in news items reported this week is extraordinary with the headlines being the horrific riots in English towns and cities where the very base of law and order is challenged. The intensity to stoke up violence with malicious rumours on social media is frightening and makes one realise how easily a hostile body be it terrorism or a foreign country could cause unrest in society purely by posting a false assertion on a digital platform. Watching the police have rocks and missiles hurled at them by thugs is then followed by the success of British Athletes at the Olympic Games - maybe if access to sport was not restricted some of the throwers of rocks and missiles could find personal gratification and self achievement with the discus, javelin and shot.

Talking......from Lincolnshire

August 5th 2024

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 500ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd.

As I could hear the new season’s first roar of the mighty John Deere 8430 in the shed next to my office my heartbeat quickened as we were getting ready to do some “real” work. 30 minutes later it became apparent that even this modern classic may not be herculean enough for the task of remedying the last 12 months rain and archaeological shenanigans.

I have dabbled with direct drilling in various guises for 15 years, which means 45% of the farm has not had any cultivation since 2021 and given the natural tendency of this land to slump, landwork is currently a horrific, yet necessary affair.

We have tried every cultivator I have, in various orders and with significant repair bills to follow, and unsurprisingly it is the most knackered machine which is the one of choice. The problem is the sheer weight of water has created a dry, hard 4” layer, exacerbated by the remedial summer cover which chose to bolt rather than scavenge deeper in the soil profile for moisture, and this layer is preventing the subsoil from drying. So the old Tinemaster has risen like Lazarus, and despite only being used for levelling dyke spoil for the last 14 years is now back as a primary machine. With the modified tines being set just below the discing depth it is allowing the soil to breath ready for subsoiling when conditions allow.

Our pre harvest trip to Corfu allowed for a quiet time of contemplation. There I was in my 30hp €130/day boat trying to make nautical friends on a particularly still sea, waving at the oligarch’s super yachts with not even a cursory doffed captain’s hat in return. This is why I am pleased I am part of the pre-Tinder generation; I don’t deal with rejection very well. And this all got me thinking. Which industry is most like the UK farmer? I have often heard agriculture being mentioned in the same breath as mining, the hard work, communities built around the industry and cheaper imports; try not to think about that for too long as that didn’t end well. I can see the similarities, but I think we have more in common with the Greek Taverna owners. They are all there in a row, selling the same things, for the same prices, using the same suppliers and relying on family labour to do the work. One Taverna we went to had the grandmother in the kitchen, the grandfather behind the bar, the son and daughter in law serving the tables and a delightful grandchild bringing out the drinks. This probably sums up many UK family farms, the only discernible difference being when the Greeks go boating they get to see amazing shoals of fish and pretty ladies in bikinis, whereas we go boating and you are likely to have a head-on with a Chinese container ship whilst the legacy of Thames Water floats past you… I really ought to go and test some wheat.

We need more of this…
...and less of this. Back in dock for more repairs

Fuelling UK Farms

Talking......New Zealand

August 5th 2024

Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing.

A winter storm blew in last week dumping snow on the mountains and a couple of inches of rain down here on the plains.

The cold makes us envious of those who’ve managed to get away to the islands (she said we couldn’t go away this year) but the rain was welcome after a dry and mild winter.

Half the cows have returned for calving to the dairy farm from their holiday up country. They wintered well on fodder beet and grass seed straw and have come back in great condition and are poking out lots of calves. The later calvers will follow shortly. Thanks to the dry winter the farms are looking good. The wheat has come through the winter and is well set for spring. Lambs have done well, with some of the heaviest being sold already. The market has lifted a wee bit and I think the boys will make a bit of a margin despite paying too much for stores. Even the sows have decided it might be nearly spring and we have lots of new born piglets.

I gazumped the great Irishman in the sky who is the sod who keeps sending us farmers curve balls, by putting the sows in sheds the day before the storm hit. I even cleaned the gutters on the big house so the roof didn’t leak. He’ll be plotting his retribution. In the meantime and because it is really too cold to do much else, we’ve been skiing.
