A NEAR CATASTROPHY AVERTED
Throughout my long and varied life I thought I had heard it all. My early years in the forces had exposed me to what I thought would be my education for life, that was until last week. I went to pull a shed at Over Langshaw, I have been there many times before and moved their two hen houses countless times. I arrived early which is extremely unusual for him as I am usually embarrassed by how late we are. We reversed up to the frame, I was hitched up and drove forward laying out the cable. I then received the thumbs up and started to pull, as the wire tightened things started to move, and then suddenly there was a scream of stop. Now, I am not sure his reactions are as quick as they used to be, he can’t turn his head round as far as he could, anyway, he put his foot on the clutch and I stopped, the wire went slack as I wondered what had happened. One of the pins on the 3-point frame had jumped out, the result was I had pulled the central skid out of line bending various struts and supports underneath the shed. Then I heard language I hadn’t heard for a very long time, I don’t think he (this not him but another he) realised there was a female within earshot. I was left on site, he was sent home in the clients van and repair work begun. It was not as bad as feared and four hours later I had the shed pulled and in place for washing and the new flock. I have been feeling very run down recently constantly tired and unable to start. I was admitted to the local hospital and diagnosed with dead batteries and a malfunctioning alternator. With two new batteries and a new charger I now feel as fit as a fiddle and ready to go anywhere. Whilst there they noticed my bumper was loose with broken bolts a result of me running into the digger when my brakes failed and that my windscreen was falling out. I have had both those fixed as well which will save any embarrassments later.
I have just heard from him waiting to take off on the plane at Gatwick airport. They are delayed because there is no “tug” to push the plane back. Could I come down was the request, as much as I would have enjoyed the experience, I think I could have been very unpopular leaking oil on the tarmac. If only he could fix my leaks, then think of the jobs I could do.

On Our Farm
September 10th 2024
Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley and oats are grown, 500 Angus cattle are finished annually, 8000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose and 8,000 organic point of lay pullets are reared each year.
The old man strolled into the office the other day, which is a rare thing now and announced that he had been speaking to someone about Agrimart and how much they enjoyed reading it. However, they thought that my articles can be quite negative and depressing. He then left rushing off to another holiday somewhere in the Med on his electric bike! Right, stay positive, here we go, not easy at present as the rain pours down once again! Oilseed rape has got off to a flying start and it is loving the warm damp harvest weather. Flea beetle and slug pressure appear to be non-existent which is excellent news. The digestate has done an incredible job getting the rape out of the blocks quickly, you can really see where it has been applied.
All fields that have been cut are cultivated ready for drilling. The ploughed fields have turned over pretty wet and shiny but I am sure they will come down well after a couple of dry days, fingers crossed. The mist and mirk of the past week has now disappeared blown away by a lovely, bitingly cold wind from the North. We may finally get the Spring Barley fields cut, baled, ploughed and drilled with Winter Barley next week. Over the years I have found that the early September drilled Barley yields much better than anything sown mid to late September. However the clock is ticking and currently very little progress is being made.
The past week of weather has allowed us to deplete, wash and move a hen shed without clashing with combining. We plan to catch the pullets and restock the shed tomorrow. Yurii has done a fantastic job rearing and I think this batch look like some of the best we have ever produced.
The grazing cattle are doing really well. I am keen to bring another batch in soon as they are getting on top of the grass and quality is starting to decline. For the past few years we have walked the cattle home rather than boxing them round the roads. Not only does this save a lot of time but even the wildest of cattle are much calmer when walking in a mob. Unfortunately we are currently unable to move any cattle as they need to go through 30ha of uncut spring barley ground.
We have finally installed a new track behind the house which means that all farm traffic doesn’t have to go within 3m of the back door and through the garden. As you all know farm machinery, dogs and young children are not a good combination. The new track is a great success already and Jess is no longer threating to divorce me at the moment!
The very wet winter and poor crops highlighted some drainage issues which was not obvious during a normal growing season. Hendy, our legendary digger driver, has discovered the main drain on our biggest field is completely full of hedge roots. He is currently installing a new six inch drain down the entire field - at over 750m long it is going to keep him busy for a few days!

The bulls are off, a little later than planned, but it’s been one of those summers when all the deadlines have had to be a little flexible as we have had a fair bit going on. We are busy building a house for a team member. We have opted for a log home from Finland. The whole process has really impressed us and the speed of construction has been brilliant. Its cut and made to measure in Finland then packaged up and shipped over with construction by a small team from Longtown. We prepared the site, they’ve built it and we’ve supplied a plumber and an electrician. It’s a very efficient, warm house with everything electric and run off solar panels. The kitchen is going in as I type this, the flooring is down, electrics done, bathroom next, then the woodburning stove. We started preparing the site at the end of July and it should be completed by the end of September.
The wholecrop is being cut and ensiled this week. As it went in late due to the wet spring weather, we have left it as long as we dare to harvest, but we need it off as the new grass seed needs to go in for SAM3 as soon as possible. Normally we under sow the whole crop with the grass seeds however, we had decided not to use that approach this year, as often the grass seeds struggle and die of due to a lack of rain. Typically, it tuns out that this would have been the perfect year for the under sowing approach. It has been a difficult year to predict and even grass growth through the summer has struggled, with it coming now, but with limited nutritional benefit.
We are off to the Westmorland Show this week and are hoping to discuss a few things with DEFRA, RPA and Natural England as well as taking in all that the show has to offer. It will be one of the last few relaxed days before we rev up for a round of vaccinating cattle and before we start turning around one of the hen sheds. The whole cycle of shed cleaning, wash down, electrical checks, preparation, disinfecting, etc is always a chase and a busy time in order to get it done in readiness for the new birds coming in.
I have had a fall out with some electric fencing. The plan was to fence off an acre of wild bird mix, whist the rest of the field was grazed for a few weeks. However, a few sheep in the group weren’t in on the plan and pretty much scooped the entire fence up, obviously got a bit of a shock and carried it across the field. Putting the fencing up, unravelling it, sorting sheep, attempting to reposition electric fencing, has all taken considerable time. If only I had made the phone call to the fencing contractor for a permanent fence at the start of the process.

Talking......from the boundary
September 10th 2024
This is well and truly from the Boundary, I am writing at 35,000 feet on a flight to Crete for a weeks electric biking holiday. I thought it was reasonably safe to go away at this time as harvest is usually finished and my input is not required. With the forecast looking unsettled I fear the barley might still be waiting for the combine when I arrive home. Bogdan and Diana, our key Romanian staff, are then away for a fortnight so I could be busier than I envisaged.
Hugo is very long suffering of the extra costs I incur like catching the electric cable that runs down the boom on the telehandler on a branch. This needed a complete rewire back to the cab. Next a miscalculation of a field size meant I ran out of spray requiring more chemical to be purchased. On the other hand I was very pleased with myself for penning a lame beast in a field of 60 in a 17 hectare park on my own. The animal was then transported eight miles home, it’s foot treated and released in a paddock behind the steading which has had six heifers grazing all summer so we could keep an eye on it. By the next morning it was to be found in a field of horses on the next-door farm. Its foot had improved dramatically but its memory 24 hours earlier in the crush was still fresh and one look at any of us was enough to send it galloping off through a field of the Bruces’ wheat. Luckily it respected the crop and stuck to the tramlines. Eventually Hugo drove it into a grass field. We put 4 more animals with it to calm it down, placed the mobile handling yard in the corner and after a fortnight of them becoming used to it, on Friday we managed to drive them into the pens, load and return them all to the Park at Mertoun. Such are the joys of livestock farming!
It is of no surprise that production from our two sets of solar panels are both well down this year. This correlates with the very poor yields of winter barley, rape and winter oats. Lack of sun and very wet feet combined to produce some of the worst results for many years. Wheat fared a lot better as there was sufficient sun in late June/July to contribute to grain fill but it never reached its full potential. By all reports Spring Barley is yielding well, which will make up some of the shortfall if our crop performs.

Talking......from Lincolnshire
September 8th 2024
Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 500ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd.
This season seems to just keep giving. What was always going to be a fairly miserable harvest having to cut round weedy wet holes was compounded by not seeing the sun for the majority of the campaign and having damp beginnings and ends to the day which just seemed to make it drag out.
The wheat was poor, a contract customers OSR appalling, but the spring oats and beans were very respectable. That was until the wind got up and the oats decided to start shedding despite the straw being so green we never saw a spec of dust in the entire 750 acres.
Once the oats had been piled into every nook and cranny on the farm I phoned my trader whilst doing the mental maths of the significant sums of money I was going to make. Last year I sold the oats for an average of £246, and this year was offered £151… Dad helpfully added that he sold oats for £140/t in the late 70’s at which time a train driver was on £3000/yr. So given the recent pay rise for them, my oats should be worth £3220/t.
As eternal optimists we enter the season with renewed vigour and hope. This though is immediately tempered by the seedbeds which are reminiscent of a badly run quarry and the tedium of replacing shear bolts. We have used the first box of 100 and are steadily moving through the next 100. The tinemaster was used to mix and level with the tines in at 100mm deep which was just enough to enable the subsoiling tractors to get some grip as they are pulling through at 300mm.
It has become very apparent that my planning for this season has been below par and we need to have far more fire power for next year, which will allow some slack in the system which will benefit everyone and the business. So there will be a far larger prime mover pulling wider equipment and an extra member of staff. The key though is not to diverge too far from the path we are on.
I was extremely evangelical 10-12yrs ago about the benefit of direct drilling and the broad principles I am still in agreement with, but with a plethora of experience of heavy fen soil I am tailoring a system which includes vertical soil movement each year. This is mainly due to the silt content just allowing the soils to slump too easily. As the years go by and more organic matter is returned to the soil I have noticed this slumping greatly reduce, but there is still a major roll for soil loosening. I just need to be able to do it faster.

Payment rates have been released for the BPS and Greening 2024 in Scotland with barely any change to the combined payment rates applied in 2023. Region 1 (-18p); Region 2 (+2p) and Region 3 (-1p). Rural Payments and Services have commenced Advance Payments.
The 2024 Upland Sheep Support Scheme (SUSSS) is open (www.ruralpayments.org) for applications; providing additional support, on top of BPS to sheep producers who farm in Scotland’s rough grazing areas. The claims deadline is 30th November 2024.
The Scottish Rural Development Programme (SRDP) Capital Grant Schemes report based on grant schemes funded through SRDP 20142020 has been published. The report can be found at www.ruralpayments.org and includes findings on three capital grant schemes funded through SRDP. The summary overview of grant scheme reach and engagement was as follows:
Scheme
Number of applications received
Percentage of applications approved
Total grant expenditure
New Entrants Capital Grant Scheme (NECGS)
Small Farms Grant Scheme (SFGS) 304
The three grant schemes all had a focus on business improvement and sustainability of new and small businesses in rural (and island) communities, and how that could support the attraction and retention of farmers and crofters in the agricultural industry. The report concluded that NECGS was over-subscribed; SFGS under-performed due to scheme design and eligibility issues and CAGS proved popular. With the maximum award at £25,000, it concluded that there should be some flexibility implemented to allow for capital projects where the cost of inflation has made these items more expensive. The grant schemes were found to broadly support the right type of activities for both small and large projects alike. Receiving decisions and applicants having to fund projects upfront worked less well. A lesson learned, the SG are encouraged to increase awareness that interim grant claims can be submitted to ease cashflow issues for applicants. Controversy has erupted concerning redirected funds from the Nature Restoration Fund. Scottish Land and Estates have written to the Deputy First Minister highlighting the urge for the SG to reconsider rural funding being cut and redirected to settle pay disputes in local government. Ministers have directed Councils to allocate £5m from this year’s £29.2m fund intended for vital conservation projects. The SG claims this reallocation is necessary to address immediate financial pressures and that diverted funds will be replenished in future years. Is this just the start of funding being syphoned off from agricultural and rural projects to fill the gaps left elsewhere and balance the books? ENRICH YOUR SOIL AND BOOST CROPS FOR FREE WHILST REMOVING CO
We spread crushed basalt rock on agricultural land, enriching soil fertility, supporting healthy crop growth and stabilising soil pH. This locally-sourced rock also removes CO2 from the atmosphere through a natural process known as enhanced rock weathering. It’s a win-win for your land and the environment.
WHAT IS BASALT ROCK?
Basalt is a mineral-rich volcanic rock that has been applied as a soil amendment for hundreds of years. It’s a product of the Scottish aggregate industry which is screened to ensure it's safe for agricultural use. Our basalt is suitable for all crops, including pasture, and has been approved for use in certified organic farming systems.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS FOR FARMERS?
Our basalt is supplied and spread free of charge or heavily subsidised, using local contractors who know the roads and the land. Farmers can expect to see the following benefits:
Nutrient uptake: Crushed basalt releases magnesium, calcium, potassium and other nutrients, boosting soil health and making your crops more pest-resistant.
Improved soil pH: As basalt weathers, it helps maintain the target pH of the soil. Basalt delivers a slow release of alkalinity to stabilise soil pH at optimum levels for longer.
Higher crop yield: An initial trial with The University of Newcastle showed crop yield was on average 15% higher (9.3% and 20.5% between ploughed and direct drill amended plots) following the application of crushed basalt.
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
Farmers and landowners in the central belt of Scotland and North East Scotland.
WHY?
With the help of farmers like you, our mission is to remove 1 billion tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere to make the planet livable for future generations.
If you are interested in enriching your soils whilst removing CO2, contact Joe Ritchie on 07400 858 333 or email joe@un-do.com
Talking......North of the Forth
September 9th 2024
Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise. Harvest 2024 has so far been a stop, start but mostly stop affair. In August we only had three days combining. The unsettled weather has meant crops are slow to mature and consecutive dry days are a rarity. Frustratingly being near the coast we have also had fogs/haars that have delayed and curtailed harvesting whilst those further inland are able to make progress.
Spring barely is now mostly cut with only 14ha of later maturing crop to harvest. Laureate seems to have yielded well and quality seems to be good too, so far meeting malting spec. Straw yields also seem to be good and thankfully most is baled up to date.
Oilseed rape was harvested on a glorious Sunday (11th August). The first two fields appeared to be yielding well but then things got progressively worse and the last 3ha field was the final nail in the coffin for our average yield. Whilst 3.47t/ha (1.40t/acre) is not a disaster it is disappointing when the majority of the crop had looked so well all year. Interestingly it was our lowest oil content results for 10 years. I am guessing this is down to lack of sunlight hours when the seeds were ripening. The biggest win from OSR harvest this year was that everything came in below 9% moisture and left the farm without drying.
We persevere and next year’s oilseed rape was sown on the 13/14th August, and despite needing two doses of slug pellets, has got off to a flyer. It now requires herbicides when the wind and/or rain eases. Volunteer rye from the previous crop is a key target.
At time of writing only 4ha of Insitor wheat has been cut. Desperate to get on and cut the second wheats so that we can sow rye. Ideally this should be drilled before 10th September but at this rate we will be lucky to have it in by the 20th. Higher seed rates may be required. Up the glen, deantlering the large breeding stags ahead of the rut went well and the boys have now been reunited with the hinds. We now await the roaring stags as a sign that “things” are getting underway. Next job is split sexing the yearling mob and deantlering the young “spiker” males. Due to an over supply of farmed deer we are keeping some for a second winter which now means a late second cut of silage is on the cards. Far from ideal.
Turkeys are getting into the routine of free ranging during the day and returning to their indoor quarters at night. Christmas orders are already coming in from our customers. Whilst this is great it is also a depressing reminder that the year is fast disappearing! I wish all Agrimart readers a successful autumn campaign.
