Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley, oats and rye are grown, 400 Angus cattle are finished annually, 8000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose and 14,000 organic point of lay pullets are reared each year. Summer has finally made a return - far too late for many. Harvest has been a real stop start affair which has made baling of straw a bit of a nightmare. We had one field of wheat straw lying for over three weeks which I am reliably informed is a record for Sandystones. As I write we are hopefully starting the Spring Barley which I am concerned could put a dampener on what has been a satisfactory harvest. There are reports of low yields, high nitrogens and high skinning percentages. Fingers crossed it all passes for malting.

Our yields to date are as follows. Winter Malting Barley 7.44t/ha, HEAR Winter Oilseed Rape 3.66t/ha, Winter Organic Oats 6.05t/ha and Winter Wheat 10.7t/ha. Our stand out performer has been the Insitor Wheat despite the brome and going flat. It has also yielded an incredible amount of straw which is an added bonus. Both the new grass and the oilseed rape have flown out of the ground thanks to plenty of moisture and finally some warm weather. I am really pleased with the rape even on some of our heavy fields as it appears to have now grown away from any slug and flea beetle pressure. A good even thick crop going into the winter is key to prevent pigeon damage. Grass growth has been exceptional due to the warm wet summer. Second cut silage out yielded first cut and the quality was very good. Grazing cattle have struggled to keep on top of the grass which is definitely a good problem to have compared to last year. We are continuing to get a batch of fat cattle away monthly. The price has dropped dramatically over the last few months but thankfully appears to have hit the bottom and is on the rise again. Stores are currently hard to come by and any that are available are getting very expensive which makes the margins on finishing cattle very tight indeed! Unfortunately the combine has just had a major breakdown as it arrived in the field. Hopefully a replacement will arrive tomorrow. It sums up harvest 2023 which feels like it has gone on for ages especially compared to last year!

I hope everyone gets harvest wrapped up soon and the weather is on our side as we start to establish next year’s winter cereal crops.

We went to Edge Fest last weekend, our first time to a music festival. It was held at Lilliardsedge Holiday Park just a mile from Sandystones. For the Borders this was a fantastic event. Headline performers were Billy Ocean, Skerryvore, Ella Henderson, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Wet, Wet, Wet amongst others. It had been in the planning for four years with the pandemic preventing the initial festival taking place in 2020. The organisation was meticulous with the most amazing soundproof tent, incredible lighting and sound technology. It takes enterprise to hold such an elaborate event in this part of the world with a relatively small population and not the easiest transport links. It was undoubtedly a huge success with a sell out on Saturday. It was very fortunate that it was dry and warm compared to the previous weekend when we had 40mm of rain overnight. Hopefully this year’s success will make it an annual event. The highlight for us was Sophie EllisBextor, a 43 year old mother of five boys who was on the stage for over an hour. She must be incredibly fit as she never stopped performing. She was also very enthusiastic about the Borders telling everyone what an amazing part of the world it is.

Short-Term Let Legislation (Scotland)

In February 2022 legislation was passed by the Scottish Government requiring all short-term let landlords to obtain a licence as part of the plan to tackle the increase in short-term rentals such as holiday cottages and Airbnb’s, to ensure consistent safety standards while reinforcing the positive reputation of Scottish tourism and hospitality. The new law came into effect on 1st October 2022. Hosts will need to apply for a licence with their local council - and each of their properties may need a separate licence. All hosts must operate and comply with a Short-term licence by 1st July 2024. Local councils will decide how long the licence will last - which could be for up to 3 years from the date of issue.

New Short-term Operators entering the market after 1st October 2022 need a licence before they can start operating. They may advertise, but not take any bookings, deposits, or have guests to stay until the licence is obtained. Local councils will generally have nine months to decide on such applications.

Existing Short-term Operators as at 1st October 2022 were required to apply for a licence by 1st April 2023 but this was extended by the Scottish Government to 1st October 2023. Existing hosts can continue to accept bookings and receive guests whilst their application is being considered.

The new legislation applies to the likes of B&B, guest houses, self-catering sites and Airbnb but does not apply to hotels. Some of the requirements that hosts will need to comply with include the display of EPC ratings (for whole homes rented out), holding adequate buildings and public liability insurance as well as complying with current fire safety precautions, an electrical installation condition report, portable appliance testing and gas safety certificate (if applicable). Any private water supply must meet specific conditions and all water supplies must be assessed for exposure to Legionella risk.

The accommodation must also meet the Repairing Standards for houses and flats, including the Tolerable Standard and the number of guests at any one time must not exceed the maximum number noted on the licence.

As we go to print, the Scottish Conservatives have said that they intend to hold a debate to force a vote on the short-term lets licensing scheme before the 1st October 2023 deadline. The sector has been calling for a second delay to the scheme to be introduced, but this has been ruled out repeatedly by the First Minister. It was suggested in a recent report to Edinburgh City Council that up to 80% of short-term let properties, such as Airbnb could be lost to the City. The Scottish Conservatives are saying that the implementation of the licensing scheme on 1st October 2023 is going to put operators out of business.

Existing operators are encouraged to ensure that they are compliant with all the requirements of the new law before applying for their licence ahead of the 1st October 2023 deadline.

Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise.

On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise.

In August we seemed to be on the receiving end of a conveyor belt of rain that kept a consistent stream of localised showers over our farm. Nothing too heavy or damaging just enough to keep everything damp. Crops were agonisingly slow to mature and combining days few and far between. We did have perfect conditions for establishing OSR after rye on the 10th August with these plants making rapid progress in the growthy climate. Our OSR area for next year will be reduced as I am no longer willing to sow OSR later in the season after spring barley as these areas always disappoint.

Harvesting this year’s OSR had to wait until the middle of the month. Yields were well above average which I think is due to early sowing last autumn, early nitrogen application in the spring and a concerted effort to keep the pigeons off. Have I cracked the secrets of growing OSR? Unlikely.

Wheat harvest started on the 22nd August but was blighted by frequent showers. We only really got properly going on the 30th. Yields have been a mixed bag with the areas of frost heave, not surprisingly, being most disappointing. Variety selection for next harvest is very difficult with many varieties slipping in their disease ratings. I have taken the decision to grow some hard wheats next year as these are reportedly outperforming their soft cousins. Spring barley (Laureate) has been very, very slow to mature with secondary growth keeping crops uneven and green for the whole of August. Only the hot dry spell at the end of August/beginning of September has eventually got the crop anywhere near harvesting. The first field of spring barley was cut on the 3rd September in glorious weather. Selling malting barley is once again looking like a miserable experience. The poor weather in July and August has undoubtedly taken its toll on quality and growers are facing the usual circus of penalties and rejections. Skinning once again seems to be the main area of concern. This really grinds my gears!

I don’t mind being paid according to quality parameters. I view myself as a professional arable farmer doing everything I can to produce a product that satisfies the end users’ requirements and good growers should be rewarded for doing that. Skinning however is completely out of my control. The trade decides which varieties they want for the malting job so we grow them. That’s all well and good but when you end up with varieties that are prone to skinning and we as growers are penalised for this, it seems unfair. Other quality measures we, as growers, can influence. Nitrogen applications and timings are fine-tuned to make N levels acceptable, sowing rates, fert applications and dressing help bolster grain weights, careful drying, storage and timely harvest protect germination rates. But there is nothing we can do to prevent skinning.

I’m sure you could spend countless hours messing around with combine settings to convince yourself that skinning can be reduced but in my mind the damage is already done and by the time the crop is harvested, carted, tipped, dried, loaded and tipped again the grain will skin one way or another. I would also challenge the fact that the fate of our malting barley crop lies with somebody in a lab with a pair of tweezers going cross eyed trying to determine the percent of skinned grains in a sample of 100 grains from a 29 tonne lorry load. Doesn’t seem very scientific.

I can rant or rave all I want about the pitfalls of growing malting barley but ultimately, I’m the mug who keeps growing the stuff!

Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland - organically. The children returned to school today and it really does signify the end of summer. Typically we’re now sat here in blistering heat. Challenging probably doesn’t really cover the way this summer has been. It has put strain on people and machinery in every way, especially with all the jobs rolling into one. Hopefully with this last burst of sun and a dry spell the combining can get completed and many can start to catch up on some of the jobs and on sleep.

As the summer ends the phone starts to ring with requests for audits. We were audited last week for the Lion Code on the hens. This week it’s the RSPCA. The frustrating thing is they all generally look at exactly the same information, but want it presented in different ways, so you can’t just roll all the inspections into one. Fortunately, with the farm, our organic inspection covers off the Red Tractor at the same time, however at a cost – as our organic is annually and Red Tractor is every 18 months, so we end up forgoing 6 months of membership fee each year.

We are on with vaccinating this year’s calves with Rispoval 4 for respiratory diseases and a wormer to clear up any lung worm, in readiness for their winter housing. The bulls are off after 9 weeks and the shepherd has been sorting through tups in readiness for tupping. We are breeding our own Suffolks now, so the tup bill will hopefully be reducing a little. We bought a Hampshire Down off Joe Henry to go on the mule gimmers and have just purchased a small flock of traditional Blue Faced Leicesters in order to breed our own too. So perhaps, not a reduced bill this year! We are having to re-drill some of our grass seed, as it went in just before the dry spell back in June (yes, there was a dry spell). We’re using a direct grass drill which looks to be working well.

Our Higher Tier stewardship scheme continues to be a work in progress, with the detail now being assessed. We made the decision to get our own independent bird survey carried out, so we had the data to present to Natural England, rather than relying on their data. Magic Maps, although invaluable in some cases carried very little information about our farm, even though it’s been in stewardship schemes for over 20 years. The results have been very encouraging with over fifty species recorded on their visits, including 11 species on either the red or amber watch list. The report is also very helpful in detailing the right habitat for these species. I am convinced we must be doing something right and often worry that this need to constantly change to protect one particular species will have a detrimental effect on others. The balance is very tricky. I have also asked for a botanical survey to be carried out on the watercourse corridors that have been fenced off. There are a number of really interesting species that have flowered this year, but as I have mentioned to both Natural England and the National Trust, the species were already there and are probably there due to management of the land.

Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing.

We’re now into the run down to our general election. I think it is fair to say there is considerable hope that there will be a change of government. Unfortunately that change, should we be so lucky, is unlikely to bolster flagging markets for our milk and meat.

China which has been a huge market for mutton, lamb and milk powder, seems to have an imploding economy and has stopped buying. Interestingly both lamb and milk prices have dropped from expectations of around $8.50kg, (in the case of milk we are paid for kgs of milk solids) to about $6.50/kg. Grain prices are following the trend and have dropped over $100/t as dairy farmers are cutting all marginal costs.

Despite all this we are having a dry and mild early spring. Calving is going well; the grass is growing; the lambs have come out of their wool looking ok; the wheat is a bit yellow but will recover as the soil warms up; so, all in all the spring is pretty good.

We even managed to get away to Fiji for the boss’s birthday. There’s nothing like a few days kayaking, fishing, sailing and being chased by sharks around a tropical island to set you up for a tough year on the farm.

Our neighbours went as a family to Bali. She reported back that it was mainly a lovely holiday, but there was a glitch. He was bitten by a monkey with rabies and then fractured his back in a boating accident, but the rest of the family had a great time!

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 500ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd.

And yet it still goes on. The rain we had in the middle of August has given new life to the spring oats at home which have decided to grow again. I would be delighted if the new growth was going to increase the yield, but it won’t, so after 2 weeks of hoping the crop would die of its own volition, I have relented and applied a desiccant. I hate doing this for a multitude of reasons - some ethical, others financial but sometimes needs must. Given the Indian summer which is forecast next week it could be some of the more pleasurable harvesting conditions we will have had this year. Going into the wheat I knew yields were going to be average - which is about 10t/ha. The crop had looked fantastic all year but there was just too much straw growth for the grain yield to be anything special. Most of the wheat had lodged which made combining slow as all the material had to be harvested and the straw did not chop well at all despite new knives. It was very wiry which has left one or two fields cut in the evening resembling a crew yard. Having grown 260ha of oilseed rape last year, we have only planted 34ha this year and none on the land I manage. The yields are poor, the costs are too high and those who have currently planted are looking very nervously at small cotyledons sat in the dry getting ravaged by flea beetle. The big question is what to grow now. The spring beans and spring oats will all disappoint. The beans have lots of aborted beans within the pods and the beans that are present are more pea sized, whereas the oats just don’t have the yield, nor the specific weight. The hero crop last year, a loss leader this. For both crops the extreme heat earlier in the summer came at exactly the wrong time. I must be fed up with spring break crops when I am seriously considering some SFI rotational options to act as break crops despite the measly sums on offer. In far more exciting news, the new drill has arrived and the grant claim has been submitted. I have planted the oilseed rape and 160ha of cover crops with it and it appears to be going well. I was worried it would look daft and take far too much pulling, but the tractor sits quite happily at 7.5km/hr at 1400rpm plodding up and down. In fact, the drill is far better balanced than its predecessor which is noticeable by the reduction in wheel slip. To pop out for 7hrs drilling in an afternoon and plant 120 acres is an absolute pleasure and a long way from the system I adopted when I first moved to Lincolnshire!
