Fortunately we had three, 20 litre containers of water and although water is not the best cure for an electric fault it did do the job and soon the flames were out. The cause was diagnosed as the positive and negative cables running from the battery had rubbed bare. A piece of blue alkathene water pipe was cut and is now keeping the cables apart. How lucky it happened there and not when we were on the road as he can’t smell anything. It could have been a very sorry end to an illustrious career.

I had to go back to Gosford Estate last month to pull the remaining two sheds into position. It’s quite a fiddly job as the skids on the house have to slide between metal guides on concrete blocks, each has to be lined up by a loader as I pull. We had just finished the second house and were packing up ready for the two hour journey home when I felt a burning sensation behind my right front, not being able to look back I feared the worst as the heat increased. Just at that moment he climbed up from the back and as he arrived at the drivers seat he saw the flames - ‘Wendy’s on fire!’ I heard him shout and those around jumped into action. He tried to use my ancient fire extinguisher but the idiot couldn’t work out how to remove it from its holder.

It’s one of the never ending problems of old age - you fix one oil leak and another one appears. The seals have gone again in my hydraulic pump and every time I put the spades in the ground I needed a refill to get myself off the ground and to lift them back up. As I write I am back down at AB Wight’s getting fixed which Andy assures me will be by Wednesday as I have to be in Bonchester Bridge that day to pull Nicola’s hen house into position. Of course he’s away again so the young boss will be at the wheel.

They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland - organically. “Beavers, trees, productivity, efficiency, sustainability, nature, natural capital, climate change” are just some of the words you will recognize being used by the media and the government at present, with very little mention of food!? Food prices gets a mention, but not food production. How do we square up this circle? We are in a cost-of-living crisis, being stoked by the media, Russia and our own government. On one hand we are being asked to produce food competitively on the world stage, on an unlevel playing field, whilst on the other hand we must ‘re-wild’, take land out of production and farm to the highest of standards, which naturally increases our costs. It is becoming far more apparent that the right hand of government does not have a clue what the left hand is doing? I strongly believe that we can do both and many of us have been doing exactly that for years, but what we need is a government policy for both food and the environment. At present I think it has gone too far in the direction of the Goldsmiths of this world, with re-wilding placed in front of food. You can very much see ‘pet projects’ being favoured by the DEFRA civil servants and advisors. For example, ‘Beaver Release’ is actually happening. Hundreds of thousands of pounds of public money is being spent on this project alone. This money has been taken from the BPS pot and rather than being utilized for rural communities, its being spent on headline grabbing whims I’m not sure how those that have to choose between food and power, with both costs increasing, feel about these projects. We are back up to a full team, with Joe our shepherd back at work, which is great. We’re also about to take on a Ukrainian lady to help pack eggs a few days a week. We are putting lambs through the Racewell again to dose those that aren’t performing and re-shed them into short, medium and long term keep. The forage crop has benefitted from the recent rain as has the rest of the farm. How should we put forward all the challenges we as farmers are faced with, to the new Environment Secretary? Having done a quick look on Twitter I am impressed to see that his first tweet since being appointed, talks about farmers and food, the rural economy, where our food comes from and food security. It also includes a tractor, wheat and farmer emoji. So based on this alone, I feel he’s made a more promising start than many of his predecessors.

Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley, oats and rye are grown, 400 Angus cattle are finished annually, 8000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose and 14,000 organic point of lay pullets are reared each year. We finished harvest on 13th of August, our earliest ever finish by at least three weeks! Overall yields were good helped by some huge hectolitre weights. Despite my early fears, the wheat performed much better than expected averaging 10.5t/ha, nothing beats sunshine at grain fill. The biggest disappointment was the Spring Barley which averaged 7.5t/ha despite looking a promising crop all year. Although it was drilled early into plenty of moisture and established well the prolonged dry spell clearly took its toll. The crop was very short and it was evident at harvest that lots of tillers had been aborted due to drought stress. I am not sure if I will ever experience another harvest as easy as 2022 again. The only thing we struggled with was baling the straw. Due to it being so dry and brittle the bale would stop turning in our fixed chamber baler when it got up to pressure. The only solution was to bale at night, a common practice in Australia but not so much in the Scottish Borders! Oilseed rape establishment has been a real struggle due to the lack of moisture. We seemed to avoid every single rain event forecasted. Any rain that did fall evaporated before it touched the parched Sandystones soils. The subsoiler seeded fields have established very unevenly with the heavier areas really struggling. My decision not to plough out the old grass leys may have badly backfired. The old turf is really dry and establishment has been painfully slow to non-existent. Typical that one of the fields is right next to the A68! Any rape which has grown is now being hammered by flea beetle. The highs of harvest are now a distant memory, farming really is a great leveller. We took advantage of the prolonged dry spell to reseed an old/tired grass ley on our new land. It turned out to be a longer and rather more expensive job than I had first planned. A couple of small areas of windblown trees needed removing (felling licence required). The trees were hand cut, wood/brash removed and stumps grinded. Thank you so much to Douglas and Ben (two Agrimart advertisers) for their fantastic work. The field was topped, sprayed, ploughed, power harrowed, drilled and flat rolled. Hopefully we will have a fantastic new, highly productive ley which we can take a silage cut off as well as graze cattle. Everyday another fertiliser factory in Europe seems to be halting production due to the high gas prices. A couple of weeks ago I bit the bullet and bought all my fertiliser requirements for next harvest. I have swapped from AN/AN+S to Urea and Polysulphate as these seemed to be the best value for money at the time. My total fertiliser spend for harvest 2023 is 115% higher than 2022. With such huge increases in input costs margins for 2023 could be very tight indeed. As I write I can declare the drought at Sandystones over, it has been hammering down with rain all afternoon. We have had 32mm so far, hopefully this will finally help the rape to get going.

Furthermore, a third level of support regarding improving biodiversity, carbon sequestration and wider natural capital provision in an ‘AECS 2.0’ style scheme. The National Test Programme, NTP, has been supported with funding of up to £51 million from the Scottish Government during the coming 3 years; track one of this programme launched in Spring 2022 under Preparing for Sustainable Farming (PSF). Within track one, funding for Carbon Audits and Soil Sampling were released and have proven popular. SAC reported that they received a 50% increase since 2021 in carbon audits. Albeit prevalent, they went on to warn that time should be taken over these and not solely a tick box exercise, thus adding value to your farming business. Track two of the NTP has commenced as “Testing Actions for Sustainable Farming” (TSF). The objective of TSF is to create, examine, develop and regulate the support and procedure that is essential to reward farmers, crofters and land managers for working along with the climate and biodiversity outcomes. This was regulated with a funded survey which closed on 28th August; the results are yet to be published. With this in mind, Scottish Land & Estates recently released their “#Route2050 On Track for Rural Scotland” report, with immediate asks surrounding land use policy development and subsidy support in preparation for the 2023 Agriculture Bill. The three key elements of food security, biodiversity and climate change should be given equal consideration in Scotland’s reinvigorated post 2025 support scheme and the 2023 Agriculture Bill. Addressing the climate crisis has been the sole focus of policy so far with encouragement for woodland creation, increasing carbon sequestration and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, SLE specified that they felt food production, biodiversity and climate change should have equal respect within the development of new Scottish rural policy. It was also mentioned that Scotland’s quality assurance schemes would benefit from a review during the transition period. This would ensure that Scotland remains to be known for strong standards as well as adding value to their producers. As yet, the 2023 Agriculture Bill intends to deliver a flexible framework, capable of intertwining with predicted economic, environmental and social challenges and prospects that may be faced. Paul Richardson, Policy Advisor (Agriculture and Climate Change), said: “Whilst there has been some progress on land use policy and subsidy support in recent years, the pace of change is not quick enough and there remains a vacuum of information, particularly from the Agriculture Reform Implementation Oversight Board.” Paul further mentioned “We know that alongside food production, measures to reduce carbon and improve biodiversity will be extremely important in the future but the sooner we can get the detail of what will be required under the new support regime, the easier it will be for farmers and land managers to plan and invest for the long-term to ensure the viability of their businesses. We must work together to overcome the challenges holding back the development of agricultural policy and the future support framework in Scotland.”

However, in a time of already, and set to rise, high input and market costs, risks taken in farming businesses are more prevalent than ever. The elation of an early harvest has been slightly dimmed by the unease over input costs and more generally the perilous state of the economy. Nitrogen fertiliser is of real concern with manufacturers halting production due to the escalating energy prices. Fert producers are not the only industries cutting or stopping production as electricity and gas prices soar to unsustainable levels. Fortunately, I have my electricity prices locked in at 15p/kwh for another year but I am hearing of farmers having to renew contracts at around 90p/kwh. These are having a massive impact on the potato and veg growers with cold stores to run. Apparently, many looking to install diesel generators as this will be more cost effective than buying electricity off the grid. This may well ease the cost burden in the short term but cannot be a sustainable long term solution and certainly not one that is going to help our political leaders reach net zero! Our governments both at Scottish and UK level have to get a grip on this and quickly but they are currently failing. Energy costs at these levels are going to hit the economy very, very hard. One part of the solution which I feel strongly about is allowing more farmers and landowners to install renewable energy schemes on their land. There is a real desire to produce energy at farm level but grid capacity and/or extortionate connection charges are preventing many of these projects. The network operators need to make the process cheaper and easier and the government needs to use the carrot or stick to make this happen. I would certainly rather invest in a solar array than a dirty great diesel generator! Perhaps if grid connection remains difficult and costly, farmers will look to use all the energy on farm with hydrogen production, battery storage or on-farm nitrogen production all being technologies that may allow renewable schemes to progress without the necessity of grid connection. Now wouldn’t that be a neat solution.

Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise. Harvest was pretty much done and dusted in August with only 4 hours of combining required on the 1st September to tidy up the last field. Top of the pops this harvest was Swallow wheat following vining peas which was filling the grain trailer at satisfyingly regular intervals. The field of shame was a crop of oilseed rape (it’s always OSR that lets the side down) that was sown a bit too late, nibbled by roe deer and devoured by pigeons and didn’t really recover. Overall yields and quality were good and most of the malting barley was on wheels to the maltsters in August which helps both cash flow and grain store logistics. Annoyingly grain drying has come to a brief halt as we await the last two loads of barley shifting before we can dry more wheat but with wheat sitting at low moisture levels this is not of immediate concern and shouldn’t take long to rattle through when space allows. An early harvest has allowed me to experiment with green manure/cover crops. Various mixes of clover, phacelia, vetch and ryegrass have been scratched into barley stubbles using the Opico grass harrow. Some timely rain has got these off to a great start. Our very early sown rape (4th August) survived the dry spell and is looking well, if not a bit too well. Ploughing is currently under way for wheats and rye which will hopefully be sown in the next few weeks with dung and lime spreading also planned for September

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 500ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd. This is a major month for us. We have taken on a further 900 acres of land at Worths Farm near Spalding which is of a far superior quality to the soil we have at home. The only fly in the ointment is that it’s 28 miles away. But once there the fields are large and square and the internal road network is excellent. Well we got some rain. We managed 20mm here and 45mm at Worths. 3 miles away at Spalding there was 120mm and slightly closer to Boston 170mm was recorded with pictures of potato ridges washed flat and potatoes just sat on the surface. With this and the promise of more rain we have planted 700 acres of oilseed rape. It is looking reasonably well given the soil is still extremely dry, but the flea beetle is starting to nag it along with the odd slug and some very hungry hares. Given the change of contract farmers at Worths it is very noticeable that the OSR is enjoying the protection of long stubble and chopped straw here at home rather than the shaved baled stubble of the new farm. Moisture retention appears to be Myeverything.newsprayer has turned up which is amazing. There are a frightening number of things to go wrong on it but when working it is phenomonal. There is one little gremlin that needs resolving but I have every faith it will be, principally because the dealer has 100 and something 1000 reasons to… Harvest was finished with the spring beans. Well what a disaster. I find no satisfaction combining at 10km/hr, especially when the beans just rattle off the knife as they are so short, even if I was setting new personal bests for hectares per day cut. The beans have one more year to prove themselves otherwise I will move back to winter beans and try and come up with an ingenious solution to controlling blackgrass in them. In the next half an hour we will have a new prime minister, which I can’t see going well for anyone given the absolute paucity of candidates. How can a country as historically well respected as this descend to having such incompetent fools getting so high in government? They say that countries get the politicians we deserve and looking at the celebrity status afforded to utterly irrelevant Harry and Meghan on their upcoming tour this might well be the case. In happier news the wheat price has risen a little, the children are back to school and the pheasant poults get delivered soon which this year is a bit of a coup in itself!

He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing.

The rain has stopped, the sun is out, the farms are drying out and there’s lots of farming going on. The boys have been shearing lambs and moving them onto the this year’s grass seed paddocks to finish them for slaughter. Now it is spring the lambs will grow at about 500gm/day on the young grass. Lamb prices seem to have plateaued at about $9.40/kg and the 500 we’ve already sold have returned $228/hd. Wheat crops have come out of the winter looking yellow and well washed but with a bit of TLC and warmth they should recover and kick into gear. We’re hoping to start drilling spring wheat this week, perhaps only a month later than we’d have liked. We’ve sold the wheat forward for $620/t which now grain is leaking out of Ukraine may be good business. Just need to get it to grow. The cows are getting through calving. It was a bit of a nightmare for the Wee Fella for the first few weeks with the rain and mud, but the grass is now growing and the farm is drying out. We’ve been getting a bit of fertiliser on, nitrogen for the grass and sulphur for the clover, and rolling the paddocks the cows have pugged. The cows are starting to lift; they like the sun as well. To add to the flurry it is election season for our council. I’ve been persuaded to stand again although when asked to provide a profile saying why, I drew a blank. 2 supporters

After 31 years of living in the farmhouse at Sandystones, the time has come for us to swap houses with Hugo and Jess. With their three children, four horses/ponies and a very active social life, they will make the best use of the extra space. Making the plan is the easy part, enacting it is full of trials and tribulations which we are all very aware of but does still create stress at various stages as I am sure anyone who has exchanged places with the next generation will have experienced. Thirty years is a generation and we have been busy disposing of our children’s school and university books and associated detritus as well as my parents papers and memorabilia which have gathered here since they died. What to throw and what to keep takes considerable time when one starts looking back over some things one has not seen for 50 years. One of which is a report from my prep school - I don’t ever remember my parents telling me to put more effort in! I always thought I was rather diligent. The maxim should be ‘If you haven’t missed it, why keep it?’ but disposing of one’s past life is very hard when the memories come flooding back. In many ways the digital age we live in now makes storage so much easier on both space and accessibility. We have boxes of photographs which should have been stuck in albums but the wet day never materialised and they are still in their packets. Photos taken on holidays in those days were shared with friends who quickly bored of your pleasure at showing them places that they may never visit. Today your friends and family come on holiday with you as experiences are shared instantly on social media and holidays are quickly forgotten on returning back to everyday life. Creating the space for one house to be empty is like playing solitaire finding the right place for the blank tile. We are lucky to have a dry, vermin proof building that is not used at this time of year. That is the blank tile... Once both families are settled in, and each has put their own mark on their ‘new’ house, life will return back to normal. We are lucky to have two houses on the farm that make all this possible.
