April came and went, with barely a phone call to him requesting my services. The one chance I did get at doing an honest days work he squandered by not following up an enquiry as he had friends staying for the weekend from the South of England. To me it’s a question of priorities and he got his wrong. Surely I am more important than spending time faffing around with a retired banker – I ask you. The opportunity to drive up to West Lothian to right a self-propelled muck spreader that had unfortunately fallen over is just what I relish. By the time he got off his backside and decided that maybe he could steer me up there the owner said not to bother. In any case there was one problem – the closest point I could have pulled from was 110 metres from the machine, and as I only have 80 yards of cable there would have been a gap. So maybe they made the right call deciding to use a loader to push it upright.

And then two weeks ago when he was down in Cornwall trying to hit that stupid white ball into a very small hole he had a request from one of my most loyal customers for me to move a hen shed. By the time he got home they sent a message saying they had managed with alternative means.

The diary has at last got a couple of entries in it, there is the pullet rearing house to move on this farm, a hen house also here in July. More exciting though is the contract he has just won for me to pull a rotten private footbridge over a dean so that a replacement can be installed. Hopefully that job will come off at the end of this month and I will have something positive and exciting to report. Until then I wish you well and if you are stuck don’t forget me, you would give an old lady a lot of pleasure.

The evening will consist of syndicates rotating through a number of stands to consider valuations of certain items on the basis of a mock waygo.

Once the syndicates have been round the stands, there will follow a period of presentation and discussion.

On Our Farm

Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley and oats are grown, 500 Angus cattle are finished annually, 8000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose and 8,000 organic point of lay pullets are reared each year.

Whether it is a late spring like this year or and early one like previous years, suddenly all the jobs need doing at the same time. Drilling, spraying, rolling, turning out cattle moving and washing pullets sheds to mention just a few. These all need to be fitted into the normal daily jobs of egg collecting, feeding cattle, treehouse turnovers etc. With catchy weather it makes the whole thing even harder. Then you get the dreaded phone call from one the seemingly endless different inspectors or assessors as they now like to be known. Each inspection takes up at least a day, with two last week I was not in the best of fettle as the last assessor was leaving at 5pm on Thursday!

A month later than last year, but all the grazing cattle our now out and finally the grass has started to grow. It may be a result of the wet winter/early spring but I have never seen so many thistles, docks and nettles in the grass fields before. We will need to dig out the bike sprayer and tidy these weeds up before it becomes a real mess.

Spring barley was all drilled in the final week of April into good conditions all things considering. There were the odd wet patches which had to be drilled around having lain wet all winter. Interestingly these areas were the same as 2018 post ‘Beast from the East’. I had a digger in to see if it was a drainage issue but all appears ok they just needed more time to dry out.

Winter wheats are very variable in growth stage and have taken ages to take up nitrogen. Finally this week the horrible light green/yellow has gone and they are starting to turn a lovely dark green. It will be very interesting to see how the winter cereals perform after so much rain. I am not expecting anything special however it is good to see the wheat price heading in the right direction which will help soften the blow of any drop in yield. We really need a decent spell of sunny, warm weather.

All the nitrogen, sulphur, P and K has been spread. Silage fields have finally dried up enough to be rolled. Unfortunately we ran out of time to get hen muck on the organic silage ground so it is looking a little hungry. I hope the clover will kick on and do its job otherwise we could be looking at quite a disappointing first cut.

All four hen sheds are now in lay and preforming ok. The next job is to move and wash the rearing shed before the next batch of chicks arrives. I hope the sunshine finally appears and I look forward to seeing you all at the Highland Show.

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 500ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd.

I must confess that whilst planting spring oats at Worths in the middle of April, which is a month too late anyway, I was not a happy bunny. In fact my foot stomping and cursing would have been a good addition to the new series of Clarkson’s farm; a stereotypical farmer who was upset the land was too wet, and then within 48hrs it was too dry.

I am generally a traditionalist in all facets of life, until it comes to spring drilling where I like do everything back to front. I was watching all the neighbours “opening” land up to break the sealed layer and “to let it breathe”, and then throwing metal, fuel and time to try and smash it down again which has resulted in some reasonable looking seedbeds. However, they were lacking one thing, the only thing we have been complaining about having too much of for 9 months… moisture! I was peering over the ditch (we don’t have hedges) thinking perhaps their experience of this land means I should be doing the same thing. But the thought of hiring a power harrow and sitting on it for 700 acres was more than my delicate state of mind could handle, so we bludgeoned on. The drilling looked in places like a scene from the film Armageddon, at which point I started googling power harrows. It was so bad that my time trusted method of putting the seed into moisture and only then worrying about covering it up, normally by using the straw rake was failing as there was just no tilth to work with. Cue a call to a friend who uses a Claydon - I assumed he would be in a similar predicament. I enquired as to how his drilling was going and he emphatically replied “f**king awful”. Never has one man’s misery been such a confidence booster for another! He had resorted to getting a neighbour power harrowing behind the drill to tidy it up, and after I explained my pathological hate for power harrows (and the fact I can’t get hold of one easily) he said it sounded like a short disc would do a good job. Well I could get hold of one of them, and they can go fast, which is my kind of Clarksonesque farming! It is amazing sometimes you just can’t see the wood for the trees… What a job it did! We preserved what moisture there was and finally got an acceptable seed to soil contact. It took a gentleman’s touch to try and maintain an even depth through the silt hills and then clay hollows but we got there and I am pleased to say the majority looks to be coming up well.

The start of 2024 has been interesting to say the least. A significantly prolonged period of wet weather has delayed spring drilling across the board, whilst lambing conditions have been far from ideal. Having said that lamb prices have reached unprecedented hights meaning even the scruffiest of last year’s hoggs have been deemed valuable enough to avoid the farmhouse freezer and have instead gone through the ring.

We have seen European farmers protesting at what appears to be unreasonable legislations, and we have seen further escalations in the Middle East and Ukraine, pushing up wheat and fertiliser prices. Inflation appears to be under control to a degree, and although there is a possibility of further reductions in interest rates its unlikely to go up again in the short term.

The more optimistic of you will be thinking that now the weather has improved the pressures may ease off, but 2024 is set to be the most significant year in political history with almost 50% of the world’s population heading to the polls in one way or another. This includes a UK general election, a US presidential election, and going by the events of the last few weeks I wouldn’t rule out a Scottish parliamentary election just yet.

There is plenty of uncertainty surrounding agriculture, but there has been for quite some time, meaning that farming businesses need a fair degree of resilience, along with a sense of humour, to be able to navigate through this volatility.

This need for resilience is even more pertinent when the impending changes to agricultural policy north of the border are taken into account. Recent NFUS figures stated that overall, only 37% of Scottish farming businesses generated an income before subsidies and with support that figure is only 87%, and I would expect similar figures to be seen in England, highlighting the importance of schemes such as BPS or SFI.

So, with this uncertainty around future subsidies, and the additional pressure coming from external factors, the question is how can a farming business possibly become more resilient? Simply put it needs to be in the best position possible.

The first step is to make sure you fully understand how your business is currently performing in terms of physical and financial output. This involves delving deep into the figures and being completely open and honest about what works, and more importantly what doesn’t. Only then will a business be able to start thinking ahead.

Professional advice can be invaluable on these matters, especially as it provides the opportunity for things to be looked at with fresh eyes, and potentially a different point of view. Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland - organically.

All of our moods have improved; the cattle and sheep as well as the team. What a difference a little bit of sun on our backs makes and the ceasing of endless days of rain. The ground is still pretty saturated in places and we are struggling to get muck onto a couple of fields to be ready for ploughing to sow the whole crop. It’s a bit of a timing nightmare – it all needs to go in at the same time to ensure we harvest it in one go, but two fields are now good to go and one field is still a boggy trap. We love a project and have embarked on a big one. Works have started in earnest with our main silage pit to cover it, as well as the groundworks for our new muck store. We don’t need to do the muck store at the same time, but its making use of the groundwork team and build team when they are on site. However, we need to push on with the silage pit. It was emptied last week and we will be cutting in June – so the window of opportunity is slim.

The new hens have arrived after quite an intense week of getting the shed ready with the final touches always putting the pressure on. This flock is already proving to be a bit of a challenge. All flocks need training to go to bed at night, where we go into the shed every night after lights out, to ensure all the birds are sleeping/perching on the system. We want the birds to be able to find their way round the system as this is where the feed and water is, as well as the nest boxes. Hens that make their home on the ground tend to lay their eggs there which is not ideal. This flock have been in five days as of writing, and we’re still putting 600 odd to bed at night. It’s much better than the 3000 or so on the first night, but still a bit of training to go. It’s always exciting when we get a new flock in, but always comes with a bit of stress.

Cattle are going out to grass, at long last, and the grass is actually growing. We have a few breeding heifers and some store cattle to sell and hopefully the fat cattle will be away soon too. It will be good to have all the sheds emptied and a reduction in the workload for the team.

The commencement of our new herd of native bred heifers is complete (actually Claire has removed the cheque book from me). We are about to start their vaccination programme ready to go out to the new herd sire. It’s going to be interesting to track the progress of these heifers to see how they calve and progress next year.

Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise. Schadenfreude is defined as the experience of pleasure, joy or self-satisfaction that come from learning or witnessing the troubles, failures, pain or humiliation of another. As farmers we may not be familiar with the word but I’m sure we are all guilty in revelling in schadenfreude as we drive around the country in the moral boosting search of crops that look worse than our own. The joy of seeing a neighbour who had a few choked seed coulters unseen at sowing, the ecstasy of the local brag with a field of oats as flat as a pancake before harvest or the jubilation of seeing that lad with the shiny new tractor stuck up to its axles in mud. It’s human nature to have a wee chuckle and think thank goodness it’s not me.

Unfortunately, the downside of this is when you are the butt of everyone else’s mirth. In a two hour road trip up north from Dundee to Huntly I struggled to see one field of wheat as poor as my field that, typically, sits right next to the A90. Sown after potatoes in mid-October it sat all winter in porridge-like soils and is now a patchwork of good wheat, poor wheat, no wheat, resown wheat, ruts and weeds. The decision was taken in February when the poorest part was resown to keep the rest of the field as there were plants there and surely it was due to dry out. Two more months of rain and we are now looking at something that would’ve been ripped out in a normal year. So if you are needing cheered up you can head up the A90 and have a wee gawp. At least now you’ll have a fancy word for the elation you feel. Things dried up well here in Angus mid-April with barley being sown into good conditions. Laureate was sown here between the 18th and 22nd with a good strong show of young plants by the end of the month. Struggling to keep ahead with spray and fertiliser applications which had been compounded by a problem with the sprayer pulsing. The fault was eventually traced to the oil pump supply which had a new valve fitted during the winter service but required an oil regulator to stop the oil surging and causing the pulsing. A simple fix but valuable spray time had been lost. Rye and oilseed rape have rocketed on and left me chasing spray timings. In a season like this you can only do your best and sometimes timings are compromised. Grass is looking well for the deer and hopefully my decision to turn them out a bit earlier than normal will pay off as they can get on top of the grass before a big flush in May. The hinds are looking very close to calving with other deer farmers also reporting an earlier than normal start to calving. Why this should be is unclear, but it is fascinating how nature responds. What environmental cue are they responding to that makes them calve two or three weeks earlier?

The next month will be spent catching up with cereal applications but with crops at varying growth stages it won’t be straight forward. Some considered crop walking and many hours in the sprayer cab lie ahead.

Talking......from the boundary

One of the very part time things that I do is to act as an import agent for a French egg and day old chick producer. Some of the goods are destined for us, the vast majority are for customers all over the UK. I have been doing this since 2020, so I am now in my fifth year of completing forms and informing the APHA of what is coming in and where it is going to. It has always been a digital exercise, first of all creating an import number known as a CHED (Common Health Entry Document) on the Government IPAFFS (Import of products, animal, food and feed service). This number is then passed to the French producer who through the DEFRA equivalent in France obtains an Export Health Certificate (EHC) for each consignment. At the same time working with a British customs agent, using the CDS (Customs Declaration Service) they obtain an MRN (Movement Reference Number) that will allow entry through ports that use the GVMS (Goods Vehicle Movement Service). When the French producer has his health certificate he emails it to me, I then turn a draft Import notification into a submitted version having entered a considerable amount of information including weight of product, number, export health certificate number, vehicle registration number, entry port, date and time of arrival, exporter address, importer address, final destination and a lot more besides!

Up until April 30th, although this process took time and cost money, goods imported into the UK in general flowed smoothly through the entry points. On April 30th it all changed as BCP’s (Border Control Post) became active and all goods could be subject to checks and are charged for accordingly. As eggs and chicks are deemed high risk they are liable for inspection which can be as detailed as the authorities feel is necessary and can add hours to journey times and cause frustration when anticipated delivery times are not as scheduled. I have had to lodge funds with the Ashford Port Health who run the BCP at Sevington, 20 miles from Dover and Eurotunnel, where the inspections take place. The charge is £66 per customer per consignment which soon adds up. The other port we use is Portsmouth who invoice at a different rate and use their own charging system as it is the responsibility of the local authority to manage the BCP.

This is the culmination of the Brexit process which I hope that for all those who voted for our separation from Europe see as a price worth paying for this disruption to trade and added cost at every point.
