ENHANCED GRAIN TREATMENT
SIMPLE, ECONOMICAL & POWERFUL FEEDING With feed prices set to remain high, making the most of home-grown cereals and reducing the reliance on bought in feed protein will be essential to minimise feed costs this year. However, this does not have to be complicated or at the expense of performance. Treating cereals with ALpHA at harvest, or all year round with ALpHA365, not only increases the protein content of grain but also increases its pH to 9, allowing you to feed higher levels of alkaline starch to help maintain rumen health and increase the performance of dairy, beef and sheep of all ages and stages. Cheaper, Safer, Higher Performance. Sound to good to be true? The very real benefits of adopting a simpler, more powerful ALpHA feeding system sometimes have to be seen to be believed. If you would like to see ALpHA in action for yourself, please get in touch. “I have been using ALpHA for the past 4 seasons and I am delighted with performance, gut health and cattle cleanliness. The increase in protein means that the only feed protein we have needed to buy in has been for the creep mix at grass. Once they are weaned at 9 months the cattle receive no extra protein supplementation, which has significantly reduced our feed costs. The bulls are away at 13 months old, currently averaging 1.65kgLWG/d from birth, K.O at 56% and grading as well as continentals, which has meant that our average carcass value has been exceptional this year.
“Alpha is a perfect fit to my system as I can use it to treat grain both at harvest and on dried grain later in the season with ALpHA365. What a weight off one’s mind when you confess to an accident that you have never owned up to. For the past 12 months I have lived in fear of a blue flashing light suddenly appearing here and me being carted off, interrogated, appearing in the dock and then a lengthy spell behind bars. What would people think? For years I have been a pillar of the community and now I am the villain. All because I left the scene of an accident without notifying the authorities. At last I have decided to ‘come clean’. I suppose you could say it was his fault and he should be the one spending the rest of his life behind bars but it was me who did the damage and I have no excuse apart from fear of solitary confinement. It was in the spring of 2021 and we were on our way to Lochtower to pull a hen shed. We left late, as usual, because he never gets out of bed in time. Anyway we had to stop Yes, it was me officer! at the A68 junction turning right towards Jedburgh. From a standing start I have to admit turning my front wheels without power steering is hard work for a weed like him. This time he started too late and my wing mirror caught the edge of the sign, dislodging one half from its framework. Of course we drove on, not wishing to admit that it might have been me who caused the sign to flap. Some months later Storm Arwen strikes and the next thing I see is the aforementioned lying on the verge, and before I could say ’Jack Robinson’ he has stopped, checked there was no one around to see him and he was throwing it into my backend. So there we are with a signboard with nothing on it and the directions in my possession. What does he do then? Go to the council with his tail between Free his legs saying how sorry I am to damage their signage on a main trunk road? On Our Farm
May 11th 2022
Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley, oats and rye are grown, 400 Angus cattle are finished annually, 8000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose and 14,000 organic point of lay pullets are reared each year. Another month goes by and the war in Ukraine shows no signs of ending anytime soon. The wheat price continues to climb supported by one of America’s worst ever droughts and record high temperatures in India. Currently new crop feed wheat is trading at over £320/t! How high will it go could it get to £400/t? I never thought it would get near to £300/t so I now believe anything is possible. The continued increase in commodity prices is putting the livestock industry under severe pressure. Many are having to make some very tough business decisions - ourselves included. The price of feed for our Organic hens is reportedly over £700/t. We are currently locked into a six month contract until the end of September so are slightly protected from these very high prices. However by the end of September feed could be £750/t. If it did get that high Sun setting at the treehouse and the egg price didn’t increase at the same rate (which looks very unlikely), we would have to stop producing eggs. Do we mothball the sheds, sell the sheds, deplete early? These are all very, very difficult decisions to make especially as we all have so much pride in what we are doing and giving up feels like we have been defeated. We had our usual monthly farm meeting last week and made the unanimous decision to keep going at present and see what happens. I hope we can ride it out however there is no point doing it if we are just going to lose money. On a brighter note crops are on the whole are looking full of potential. The rape still looks good and with prices as high as they are I am looking at increasing our acreage next year. Winter barley got its final fungicide yesterday and is very clean but a little short. The spring barley having established well needs some rain as do the silage fields. Hopefully the heavy showers we have experienced over the past couple of days will help. Fingers crossed by the time you read my next article we will have had our first guests in the treehouse. I think that I was being slightly ambitious hoping to have our first guests by the end of April. The website is now ready to go live, all the landscaping is finished and the grass is growing. Let’s hope this lovely weather stays and they can enjoy the Borders at its best. It has been a very busy month turning out cattle. With an extra 100 acres of grass this year we have significantly increased our summer grazing numbers. The new land has required quite a bit of work to ensure it is stockproof and no hungry mouths get into the silage fields. Thankfully the new electric fencing has worked well. The next job is to hang some new gates and replace the rotten posts. I really enjoy checking the cattle but having good swinging gates really does make the whole job a lot easier. Time away from the farm is pretty rare at the moment but I am really looking forward to my sister-in-law’s wedding next weekend. Tilly, Wilf and Posy are very excited to be pageboy/bridesmaids fingers crossed all goes to plan and they stay clean for the photos if nothing else!

In 2012 we put in 207 solar panels which generated a maximum output of 50kW. It has been a good investment with a financial payback of seven years with the feed in tariff income (FIT), savings on electricity purchase and the export of surplus power to the grid. Ten years ago the FIT was 15p/kWh, imported electricity 10p/kWh and export paid 4p/kWh. The installation cost was £77,000. Guy Lee In 2020 we added another 58 panels to our array which increased our production by 50% but still limited the output to 50kW through an SMA core 1 inverter. This will give a payback of just over two years with current prices. Ten years later it is a very different set of calculations. Then the investment would not add up without the feed in tariff which was the Government’s tool to encourage uptake of renewable energy production and for it to go some way to meet its then climate change commitments of the Paris Accord. Today, our April import price is 35p/kWh, we have fixed our export at 20p/kWh for 12 months and a quote for putting 49kW of solar panels on a the roof of a new building has come in at less than £40,000. Fortunately this building has a 3 phase supply and a half hourly meter and is on a different supply from the other solar panels, so it is all possible without the need for planning permission being below 50kW. The sums make sense – production is estimated at 40,000 kW and if we exported it all at 20p/kWh that would give an income of £8000 – a five year payback. That is better than the previous install with no reliance on government support payments. Of course this is all based on current prices which could fall but even if they did drop by 50% it would still make a positive return and would enhance our carbon calculator.

May 9th 2022 Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 500ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd. Like all good farmers I am going to start by discussing the weather. We have had 20mm of rain in the last 55 days. This would not be so much of an issue if there had been sufficient rainfall over the winter, or the predominant spring wind direction had not been from the East sapping every last drop from the soil. April showers are now something we can nostalgically reminisce about but ultimately consign to history. This is my 17th Spring on this farm but I have rain records dating back 30 years before that. The 1976-2005 April rain averaged 44mm, the 2006-2022 April rain averaged 30.3mm. During these 17 years we have had only 4 years above 30mm and one year where we received 147mm in the month (basically 5yrs worth of April rain in a single year). With all this in mind the crops look well. We have managed to time the nitrogen applications to coincide with what limited rain we have had. The only disappointing field is some spring beans grown after an 18 month grass ley. I took the decision to wait for a demo disc drill so I could compare the performance with my own tine drill. The disc appeared to be doing a reasonable job but as the soil has dried the slot has become more and more open allowing the crows and pigeons just to reach into the slot and take their pick. I haven’t even mentioned the price of the demo drill, suffice to say it was eye-watering. With my machinery re-shuffle in full swing the new tractor has turned up, a new set of rolls has arrived and I have sold my current sprayer to a farm in the Borders for a late summer delivery. So if you see a sprayer suffering from vertigo, that will be it! The subsoiler is in the workshop being modified and it seems to be Trying in vain to keep the flying vermin off far too easy to spend money! But it is all ok because the Rt Hon George Useless is giving me half my slimmed down BPS cheque early. At first I thought this was bonkers, well I still do, because we can sell wheat for £300+/t grown with old priced fertiliser so cash reserves have never been so good. And then while laid in bed the other night in my Jonny Wilkinson pyjamas, my conspiracy theory loving brain cranked into gear and the farmers are yet again being taken for fools. This is just a way for the government to indirectly support CF fertilisers and thereby guaranteeing Carbon Dioxide supply by giving the farmers no excuse not to pay the over inflated price The new spraying tractor of their fertilisers. Cunning, certainly, bright perhaps not because where will this all end? 48

Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland - organically. Thank goodness the weather has been kind this week as all the teams have been stretched at times. Fortunately calving continues to go very smoothly, with the last quarter left to calve now, including the Galloways. The speed at which the cows have calved from fidgety, to water bag, to calf born has sometimes been under 30 minutes. This year there has been no time to sit about waiting! Lambing is just about done and cutting has begun. Lambs are being scratched for orf prevention and are receiving a ‘smart shot’; a tiny capsule which releases a medium acting cobalt. We have pelvic measured, weighed and temperament scored all the heifers this last week, with those not making the grade set out to fatten. We have a good even batch of heifers which include our replacements and 30 Black Baldy Heifers to sell, ready to bull. They have been vaccinated with BVD, Lepto and Huskavac. Spring crops are about to go in however, typically the much-needed rain has arrived just as I get the drill on. A Barley, Vetch and Red Clover forage crop is next, with the brassicas going in after the first cut silage has been taken. The hen team has been stretched as Gwen stepped into her Lambing shoes and I and Linda have filled Gwen’s shoes. It goes without saying that Linda is definitely quicker at packing and a significantly tidier worker than myself! Claire is often telling me that tidiness is not at the top of my skill set. The cost of hen feed continues to increase at eye watering levels and it makes the need to be very efficient with other costs, as well as avoiding any challenges which would impact egg numbers. We’re about to put an IB (Infectious Bronchitis) vaccine into the birds to up their protection as we start to spread muck – just in case airborne particles enter the shed. Inflation is a challenge for us all, with costs spiraling and we can only hope that the returns we get for our produce keep pace, otherwise we will all be in a muddle. Typically, as we start to feel stretched financially, other problems arise. The Wind turbine needs an overhaul. The estimate given is eye watering, but apparently the weather has taken its toll and damp has entered the blades, so now they are not balanced and need replacing! As we are planning to increase our cattle numbers, we are assessing housing and feed requirements. Rhidian Jones has been and visited us to discuss grazing strategies as we will need to grow more grass to feed them. I’ve had the calculator out to see whether we can afford a couple more bays on the shed. It’s catch twenty two – we need to get more profitable, but need to invest more in order to do so! 50

Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing. A fantail flew into our bedroom last Friday morning, waking us up with his chattering and then flew out. Māori superstition has it that this is the portent of a death. Sure enough, by morning smoko we learned that 2 old friends had died on Thursday afternoon and another had been killed in a workplace accident. One of them had very aggressive leukaemia and died within 5 weeks of diagnosis and the other dropped dead of a heart attack at a city council meeting. The third had retired from farming a few years ago and having found retirement a little boring had got a stevedoring job at the port. A coal elevator swung round knocking him down and then dumped a few tons of coal on him. So not good a day really. We’ve had a week of funerals and now I’ve got bloody covid. I’ll look forward to normal transmission for next month. 52

Jack Frater is an Agricultural Consultant at Edwin Thompson, based in their office in Galashiels. Jack specialising in Farm and Estate Management. We are now through the first busy period of the year, lambing will be finished for most and spring drilling is all but complete. BPS claims and AECS applications are also done with for another year, therefore it is a good time to look forward at what the future of Scottish agricultural policy may look like. A new policy needs to be in place by May 2026 at the latest. As with a lot of devolved policy decisions, those at Holyrood had been looking to align themselves closer to Brussels than Westminster, although recently there appears to have been a shift in mentality, or maybe the realisation that this is an opportunity not to be missed. The focus now seems to be around meeting their own climate change targets. So far only the broad principles of the policy have been announced, but include such things as sustainability, efficiency and regenerative agriculture. Little is expected to change in the short term. BPS will continue for the time being, although LFASS payment are likely to increase back to a similar level to those in 2018. However, by 2026 we expect that at least half of all direct support will be subject to some form of new conditionality, be it the completion of an animal health and welfare plan, soil testing, fertiliser planning, or most likely carbon auditing. These conditions will probably be applied to the beef calf and ewe hogg schemes first, before being applied to BPS claims. In the long term, a radical shift away from direct support come 2026 appears unlikely, instead a gradual phasing out of Pillar 1 payments, similar to what is currently happening in England, will be the preferred option. A more ambitious AECS scheme may be one way of bridging the funding gap, however it is worth noting that implementing an AECS contract comes with additional cost, so although farming businesses may well receive a similar amount of cash, profitability will be reduced. Training and knowledge transfer is also expected to play a leading role in future policy, with funding being used to provide farmers with the tools to become ‘professional’ rather than giving businesses the cash directly. Be prepared to collect CPD points over and above existing scheme such as NRoSO. So, what can be done at farm level to mitigate any future change? Well, the first thing to do is to make sure your business is in the best possible position. Now is the time to analyse the performance of your business, both technically and financially, to identify areas where improvements can be made. Looking at things such as the health status of your flock, or even how your borrowing is structured may highlight areas of poor performance. The Scottish Government has recently announced further funding for the Farm Advisory Service, of which Edwin Thomson is a member. This means that farmers are able to claim up to £1,000 of funding towards specialist advice, including Integrated Land Management Plans and Carbon Audits. Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise. Covid has eventually caught up with me and I write this from my sick bed. A throat full of daggers and a head full of cotton wool is the best description of my current status. Hopefully the Agrimart editorial team will edit any fever induced gibberish from my submitted copy. A pile of work awaits me outside but for now I just need to get some rest and beat this as soon as possible. Wheat and spring barley are really pushing for T1’s but they’ll just have to wait until I have the energy to climb into the sprayer cab. Late flowering rape on the poorer areas will also need a fungicide in addition to the second pass of the earlier flowered areas. The pressure is always on in May to hit growth stages and weather windows which makes my current incapacity harder to bear. Everything north of us seems to have had plenty of rain, (in some cases far too much) in the past couple of weeks, whereas everything south is looking for moisture. We are in a happy place between the two and crops are looking reasonable. Only 6ha of backward rape is causing any real concern. Tatties have been planted in good order with the Backboath team making short work of the task. The potato fields this year are right next to the water abstraction point on the Fithie Burn, which of course means the irrigator is probably unlikely to be needed. With the current price of diesel that would be the ideal scenario. A final but very important piece of fencing is being completed on the deer farm connecting our second wintering shed to the main block of grazing. The construction of a raceway and enclosure of a field completes the project started in 2018. We now have 88ha enclosed for deer which should allow us to operate at a reasonable scale and manage the grazing better. Hopefully we can finish the fencing and get all the deer in the right place ahead of calving later this month. This month was to mark the arrival The Taiga Upland fencing team in action of our new combine, however this has fallen foul of the global supply issues and we have been told we are unlikely to see it this harvest. This means our old combine will be returning from the dealer’s yard and will see another season at Powrie. This is certainly disappointing but perhaps not surprising given the turmoil in global supply chains over the past two years. Replacing machinery is never an easy decision but when you can’t actually guarantee delivery of the new bit of kit it adds a whole new set of considerations of when to change. It certainly makes used machinery a more attractive proposition as at least it’s there and ready to go rather than at some unknown date in the future. On a more positive note Patrick the Peacehill tortoise emerged from hibernation a full two weeks ahead of last year. Hopefully I can emerge from my enforced Tel hibernation sometime soon too!
