It is now three years since I won these cups at the Border Vintage Automobile Club show at Thirlestane Castle. Next weekend is the first show since I was crowned champion in 2019. I fear I maybe outclassed as three years worth of constant hard work has taken its toll on my bodywork. I persuaded him to secure some touch up paint to cover over the worst blemishes, but I am up against professional showgoers who do no work, just tart themselves up for these events. I work for a living and should be in a class of my own. Ma’am I salute you What a great weekend I had over the Jubilee, there was bunting over the gates and union flags flying everywhere. I feel very close to Her Majesty, although I bow to her superior age and rank. We are both women who are instantly recognized wherever we go. I wonder if as many people flash their lights at her as they do at me as I drive around the Borders. Not only have I been celebrating I have also been busy with a trip up to the Firth of Forth to pull Can I retain these cups? four sheds at Gosford. Air leaking out of a redundant brake pipe made for a nervous drive home but we made it without incident. I have just come back from a few nights at the AB Wight hospital where I was given an oil transfusion, had all my joints lubricated and a thorough check over. I was given a glowing report of good health and am well prepared for the toughest job I undertake pulling the two hen houses at Easter Softlaw. I look forward to seeing you at Thirlestane on Sunday June HIGH STREET YETHOLM KELSO TD5 8RA 19th. I have been asked to race against Sir Jackie Stewart’s Formula 1 car, I declined, I think it was a joke?!

On Our Farm

Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley, oats and rye are grown, 400 Angus cattle are finished annually, 8000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose and 14,000 organic point of lay pullets are reared each year. What an amazing weekend we had at Lettie and Alex’s wedding. The sun shone, Lettie looked incredible and even the pageboys/bridesmaids behaved. Thank you to Bogdan, Davie and Diana for keeping the show on the road while we were away. Over the Jubilee weekend we made first cut silage. Thankfully the forecasted rain never came and we managed to get all 360t in an Ag bag without any of it getting wet. Hopefully it will be some good quality winter feed for our cattle. With new crop feed barley hovering around the £300/t mark we have been looking at other feedstocks which we could substitute for it. Bogdan has just started collecting 200t of out of contract potatoes from a local farm. They will be mixed with straw (1 bale to 15t) and then put in an Ag bag. I have spoken to a few people who have done this before and it is very important that enough straw is added to ensure the Ag bag keeps it structure and doesn’t burst! I have also been advised to store the potatoes Tilly, Wilf, Posy and their cousins for one to two weeks before Ag bagging as they are coming directly out of a cold store. On Monday we had our benchmarking group summer farm walk. It is always a brilliant day with lots of fascinating topics covered. The general consensus from the group was that nobody had ever seen their farms looking so good at this time of year. Carbon credits, carbon trading and carbon audits was one of the subjects discussed. Do we try and sell carbon credits now, what if we need to offset carbon, who should we use to do our carbon audit? At the moment I feel that we should not look to sell any carbon credits. It is still a First cut silage View on the summer farm walk relatively new rapidly developing market and we don’t know if/how many we need to offset our own on farm emissions. Shortage of labour is becoming a real concern and everyday there are more job adverts appearing on social media - currently it’s for harvest workers. This is not just a problem associated with agriculture it is affecting all industries across the UK from hospitality to retail. There are numerous reasons for this labour crisis; Brexit, Covid, furlough etc. I can see no quick fix to this and we will need to adapt to this problem fast. One way of addressing this in KENNY HALL & SON agriculture is with the use of robotics. This afternoon I am going Agricultural Engineer to see a local farmer who is planting broccoli with a robot. June 6th 2022 Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing. The end of May saw the close of the 2021/22 milking season. It was the worst production we’ve had since buying the dairy farm 10 years ago. Fortunately, the milk price looks like it will be a record high. This was all good until we had to cross the main road and railway line. The road itself was easy. We bunched the 300 cows up, stopped the traffic and hunted Even the lambs look happy. them across. The cows unfortunately balked at crossing the railway line; half took off down the road to Timaru while the other half preferred going north to Ashburton. A rodeo ensued but eventually we persuaded the cows to cross to the other side. There were only a few hundred vehicles held up for the duration. We farmers are used to being unpopular by now. It was interesting behaviour by the cows in that convention has it that we live on the wrong side of the railway line so if the cows had any social aspirations, they should have been happy with the direction of travel. They are enjoying the weather as it has been unseasonably dry and mild. This time last year we had the worst floods in at least 50 years. The floods drowned wheat and made feeding the lambs and cows messy and difficult. In contrast this year the wheat has established well and the lambs are thriving. There is a wee way to go but with buoyant prices for meat, milk and grain and after a terrible last year, we are hoping things will go better this year… even if we couldn’t get the bloody cows across the railway line. 46

We had our summer benchmarking meeting yesterday. As a group we have been together for ten years. For the first year we were funded by QMS as we were formed as a ‘Focus on Figures’ unit with the aim to improve our red meat margins through comparing enterprise performance as well as whole farm accounts. The funding was withdrawn after that first year but the ten participating businesses felt we had all benefitted so Our benchmarking group hosted at Lochtower Guy Lee much from the very open and honest discussions that we decided to stick together and pay whatever costs were incurred for a facilitator to gather together our annual accounts and present them in a format that makes comparison meaningful and of value. Today we have at least four of the next generation attending along with their fathers and in some instances parents. Farm location is a far as Cupar in the North to the English Border, we meet three times a year, on one member’s farm in the Summer, another in the autumn and then a get together, usually in Edinburgh, dissecting the business accounts of the past year, being as critical of each other as we like. There is no doubt overall performance has improved and we learn a lot as well as really enjoying each other’s company. What a great community weekend we had over the Jubilee. On Thursday Philly lit a beacon on a ridge near here, it was a perfect evening and we could see at least four other fires on various high points. We toasted the Queen more than once. The next evening there was a great gathering at Longnewton, by the community phone box. We celebrated on the grass island just off the road with plenty to drink and eat including The Platinum Jubilee Trifle. On Saturday we joined friends bedecked in union flags and bunting to watch, on television, the amazing party in front of Buckingham Palace. The light show both on the Palace facade and in the sky was an incredible display of technology. Then on a rather cold Sunday all the grandchildren ran in the St Boswells Village race. June 8th 2022 Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland - organically. In the small window after lambing and calving has finished and before silage and clipping begin, it would appear that ‘meetings’ occur. Last week a meeting hosted by Hexham Mart with Victoria Prentis was an opportunity for farmers and the rural community to challenge the Minister on the future of the domestic agricultural policy. Certainly, here, south of the border, the cuts are broad, and at a time of unprecedented ag-inflation a new environmental land management policy that is devoid of any detail, real life testing and an insufficient budget, spells disaster for farmers. We are facing a Tory party, Whitehall driven ideology that has been rushed through. It is ill thought out and does not deal with the needs of our nation. Surely food production should have equal billing to environmental good? Are we really going to have a policy where we re-wild swathes of land, yet let those that can’t afford food starve? We are completely out of kilter with the needs of our nation. The EU has pushed a further €2bn of additional direct support to food producers from emergency CAP funds to try to ease consumer food price inflation. Our government is cutting on farm support by 20-40% this year. We are meeting our local MP, Anne-Marie Trevelyan later this week, Secretary of State for International Trade who you may remember suggested earlier in the year, that we could enjoy NZ lamb in the autumn whilst eating UK lamb at Easter – I feel an interesting meeting awaits us. On the farm, the challenges continue. As I write this month’s article, I find myself feeling a little bit stretched. It’s often a little bit of a juggle at times as we diversify our business into different types, to spread the risk, we spread the set of skills needed. A few months ago it was Claire who was feeling completely overwhelmed as the bakery was struggling with staff shortages due to covid, yet now it is the farm that is the juggle. We bid farewell on Friday to our junior team member, Cain, who has set his sights on a new career path and we wish him well. Michael is taking a well-earned and overdue holiday, following a successful calving, albeit with a few tail enders still hanging on. This should all be manageable as the bulk of the jobs are done for the short term, however Joe, our shepherd has sadly managed to injure himself off farm playing football and now has to face some recovery time. This is really difficult for him, but definitely also piles the pressure on ourselves in the short term. I find myself stockman, shepherd and hen man as well as bakery delivery driver and hot tub maintenance man all in the same day and week. I’m pulling on all resources available. Today, Claire has helped me catch a poorly calf. Yesterday I needed Dad’s help for emergency fence repairs… at 80 years old, he’s still willing to get stuck in. God knows what the rest of the week will hold.

Katie Forster has recently joined Bell Rural Solutions as a Graduate Rural Surveyor after gaining a BA (honours) degree in Rural Business Management at SRUC, Edinburgh. Uncertainty has surrounded Scotland’s post CAP agriculture policy since the phase out began on 31st January 2020, entering the 5-year transition period. Albeit unquestionably concerning for agriculture, Scotland are now driving away from this apprehension with the transition to a new post CAP agricultural policy in 2025 on the horizon. This aims to incorporate sustainable and regenerative farming practices within Scotland as was stated in the National Test Programme (NTP). With the Scottish Government’s targets of net zero by 2045 becoming increasingly closer, the NTP aims to integrate farming with these goals along with strengthening farmers’ and crofters’ awareness relating to climate change and nature. The NTP has been supported with funding of up to £51 million from the Scottish Government during the next 3 years; track 1 of this programme is launching spring 2022 under Preparing for Sustainable Farming (PSF) with further additions of track 2 in the forthcoming months. Scottish farmers who have not completed a carbon audit in the past 3 years will have the opportunity to claim a contributing £500 through the PSF scheme. Farmers can gain a one-off payment of £250 towards enhancing expertise of soil sampling and nutrient management planning as well as claiming £30/ha of region 1 land to carry out soil testing. To be eligible for soil sampling funding, it is mandatory that a carbon audit has been conducted in the past 3 years or are claiming for a carbon audit in the same application as claiming for soil testing. Farmers can apply for soil test funding of up to 20% of the region one land present on the holding per year. With carbon audits already a compulsory factor in the Beef Efficiency Scheme and many other supply contracts, these are not an entirely new concept, and neither is soil sampling. It is hoped that from funding, farmers will be increasingly motivated to carry out carbon audits and soil sampling, establishing a national baseline. An accurate appraisal of current carbon levels in Scottish soils will help to reveal the amount of carbon that is sequestered by Scottish agriculture’s crops and grassland. Through this, the advantages that soil health, crop rotation and grazing management convey can be recognised. At a time where agricultural businesses are challenged with the abnormal rise in fertiliser prices, farmers are looking to utilise nutrients as economically and effectively as is possible. Soil sampling and carbon audits will fundamentally support nutrient management, driving productivity in Scotland’s agricultural land and offering a framework that provides for Scotland’s environment and climate, whilst putting agriculture first. It is expected that farmers and landowners will be eager to participate and claim in this new scheme, playing their part in tackling the issues surrounding climate change, food security and biodiversity. It is anticipated that future grant and subsidy schemes will require the applicant farm to already have completed a carbon audit before applying therefore, taking advantage of this grant funding to establish your baseline would be a prudent first step. A scheme that integrates these issues in addition to being beneficial to the farmer’s business is a lucrative step forward for Scottish agriculture policy and a structure that has the scope for a large uptake. Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise. The last “North of the Forth” was written from my sick bed as covid had eventually caught up with me. Nearly two weeks in bed and still struggling for energy and motivation three weeks later it has been a slow month. Whilst I struggled to get up and about the crops were doing the opposite and racing through growth stages. It was difficult enough keeping up with forward crops but wind or localised showers made it very problematic to hit the right timings. In the first few days of June I finally managed to catch up and give weather/crop-watching a rest for a few days. It could easily be an early harvest if crops keep up this relentless march although the weather in June and July will ultimately decide when the combines roll. The first deer calf was spotted on the 22nd of May but calving only really starts in earnest in June. At this time of year I can spend hours glued to my binoculars watching the deer. Calving is best viewed from afar to prevent hinds getting agitated. The newborn calves disappear into cover and best left undisturbed – mothers know exactly where they are and don’t need any human interference. They are remarkable animals and I enjoy watching and learning their behaviours. It won’t be until weaning in November that we get an accurate calf count. Last year’s calves are on a simple grazing rotation with a weekly move between four paddocks that have been given a 21-day rest. Eventually I aim to subdivide a further 7ha field to give two additional paddocks that would allow more rotational management but currently we are keen to take a short break from fencing bills. Further up the hill, the trees planted in 2018 are looking fantastic with the sitka spruce between five and eight Breeding stags in bachelor group. feet tall. It’s interesting to see the forest that we have planned on maps finally taking shape in real life. A Some serious antler growth good growing season this summer should see them stretch even further. Meanwhile the windblown areas are due to be tidied this month with a harvesting crew coming to salvage the best of the timber from four woods blasted by Arwen and co. Extracting windblow is a tricky task but hopefully doing this in summer will allow harvesting and extraction to be made a little bit easier while conditions are dry. Timber sales from these are anticipated to cover the resulting restocking costs however it’s no guarantee. Within the next month I will be firming up cropping plans for next season and taking advice on what cereal varieties to grow. A day at the one of the Scottish Agronomy field plot trial sites is always a good chance to compare varieties side by side. It’s usually the untreated plots (having received no fungicide treatments) that interest me the most as it is evident from these which varieties are losing the race against certain diseases but more importantly give me peace of mind that all these long hours on the sprayer are actually worth it! June 6th 2022 Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 500ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd. I have always farmed by the mantra, “If you are going to panic, panic early”. So with this at the forefront of my mind I have bought 80% of my fertiliser for next year. The price was announced on the Monday morning and terms were removed later that day. There has been £100/t increase since then, so currently it was the correct call. I have changed the composition of the mix this year removing all the sulphur, as this allows me to store more total nitrogen in the tanks. The sulphur will be applied as polysulphate which has already been delivered. As a rule I never bale straw, but last year to make establishing my grass leys easier we baled 35ha. I hadn’t wanted to sell it from the field as it was my Plan B should we have had a terrible winter with the cattle. As we hadn’t, I have been struggling to give it away as there are vast stacks of straw still all over Lincolnshire with no homes to go to. In the end it has gone to the local power station which Finally it is on the move is 3 miles away. When I enquired of the lorry driver why it was taking so long to get back he informed me the straw was going to a stockpile 15 miles away, to then be shipped back to the power station later. So much for green energy, you couldn’t make it up! We have got some blackgrass this year which is very disappointing. For this area I would be termed “very clean” as there are some absolute shockers out there but I have made the decision to get a team in to hand rogue a few fields.
