WORKING IN THE DARK
My last article was written from Gosford where I was spending three nights before he came back so I could pull the two remaining houses into position. This time he drove himself there in the electric car, he arrived exactly on time (very unusual for him as he has a reputation for always being late). He was greeted with the news that a shed that I pulled back on Monday had slipped off the concrete panels and would need to be pulled right back onto the grass and then pulled into position. It is impossible for me to steer these houses, a telescopic loader is needed at the back end to keep these 50 metre long sheds straight. As it was not available on the Monday the inevitable happened and here I was facing the prospect of effectively moving 4 houses in one session. He was not at his most patient as he was supposed to be in Lower Largo, Fife at 7:30 for dinner with his golfing mates.
The first pull went smoothly enough, with the house in position within an hour. The towing frame was moved to the second, I backed up and with the cable attached round two pulleys I drove forward splaying out the wire until the drum was empty. I did the initial pull without a problem but when I went to drive forward again the wire jumped off the pulley and jammed itself in the casing. A 28mm cable in a 5mm gap is not the easiest to extract. Somehow we did it with the Manitou and a tractor loader and within half an hour I was back pulling. By now dusk was falling and we still had one shed to pull off and back on again - a total of four manoeuvres. He wanted to do it another day, I was keen to get it done as was Brian who was on holiday the next week. Between us we persuaded him to stay and somehow we managed. I was lit up like a Christmas Tree but still couldn’t see what I was doing. He eventually left at 8.30pm covered in S H one T, and smelling like I don’t know what.
I spent 3 more nights at Gosford not being collected until the Monday morning. It took 110 litres to fill me up, the most fuel I have ever used on one job. Since then I have spent three nights in hospital having oil leaks fixed, silencer repaired and brakes lubricated.
I am now fit and well and ready for the next challenge.
I have just looked at the ULEZ rules for vehicles in Central London. I am exempt on two counts being classed as an agricultural vehicle and being built before 1973. SO I PLAN TO BE THERE ON NOVEMBER 19th, SHOWING SOLIDARITY WITH THE INDUSTRY I LOVE.

Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley and oats are grown, 500 Angus cattle are finished annually, 8000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose and 8,000 organic point of lay pullets are reared each year.
Three big events have occurred over the past week which could have a huge effect on our lives, globally, nationally and locally over the next 5-10 years.
Rachel Reeves’ October budget has sent shock waves through the agriculture industry with changes to IHT, minimum wage/NIC increases and a tax on imported fertiliser. These are just the headline statements and when the dust settles over the next few weeks we will get a much better idea of how it will affect us. My fellow article writers have covered this subject in detail this month and far more eloquently than I could have done so I do encourage you to read them.
Yesterday came the announcement that Centre Parcs wants to build a new site just off the A7 between Selkirk and Hawick. A £350-£450 million pound investment, covering 1000 acres, 750 lodges, 250,000 visitors a year, 1200 new permanent jobs and 750 construction jobs. This could be massive for the local area and especially tourism which has historically struggled to attract visitors due to its lack of major transport links. However I do have my concerns, Centre Parcs business model is aimed at ensuring that most visitors stay on site for the duration of their visit. Where will all the extra labour come from, it is hard enough already getting cleaners let alone another 1200. Can our local roads cope with an extra 1400 cars during a changeover day?
Finally I woke up this morning to the news that Trump has almost certainly won the US election. Whatever our view is on him this is quite an incredible victory for someone who has faced multiple scandals over his career. Criminal and civil court cases, a conviction for which he is due to be sentenced in three weeks time. Will he impose tariffs once again on some UK goods? What will happen in Ukraine and Israel? This election win will have huge ramifications around the world.
I am a firm believer that whatever the situation, opportunities will come out of it - we just need to make sure that our businesses are flexible enough to adapt to them. Back on the home front all sheds are full of cattle with 24 of the smallest heifers still out at grass due to lack of shed space. Thankfully the weather is on our side and the prolonged period of high pressure we have been waiting for all year has finally arrived. The new batch of chicks are doing really well and we are slowly working through a long list of Winter jobs. Chopping firewood, topping off tracks with road planings and relocating a shipping container are some of this week’s jobs. Finally a huge congratulations to all the Scottish Agriculture award winners especially Murray of Redden being crowned Champion of Champions.

Talking......Business with Edwin Thompson
November 2024
Jack Frater is an Agricultural Consultant at Edwin Thompson, based in their office in Galashiels. Jack specialising in Farm and Estate Management.
The annual budget is usually a predictable affair, so much so that if you were devising a game of ‘Budget Soundbite Bingo’ you’re likely to get a full house in the first few moments. The contents of this years budget, and the ramifications it has for farming, was somewhat less certain given that we were told in the summer that whilst Labour was ready for government, they were not ready to deal with rural matters.
The tone was set just before Rachel Reeves took to the dispatch box when Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer was asked if he would continue to support British farmers, his response was to first have a dig at his predecessor before saying the Chancellor would begin the work of supporting agriculture in her statement – cue a sense of trepidation.
What we got from the Chancellor was, as it turned out, something along the lines of what had been expected in terms of its impact on farming, as she reiterated time and again the need to implement some £40b worth of tax increases whilst maintaining inflation at 2% to ‘restore economic stability’ – the main soundbite of the day.
A commitment to keep fuel duty at current levels will come as welcome news, however an increase of the minimum wage to £12.21 per hour, and a 1.25% increase to employers National Insurance contributions will make employing a farm worker that bit more expensive.
Undoubtedly the largest impact is the proposed reform to Agricultural Property Relief and Business Property Relief and how it is applied to inheritance tax. From April 2026 the first £1m of combined business and agricultural assets, including land, livestock and machinery, will continue to receive 100% relief, but for all assets over £1m, inheritance tax will apply with 50% relief, therefore at an effective rate of 20%. This is likely to have a huge impact on landowning farming businesses and potentially the wider farmland market but it is important to remember that the 7-year rule still applies.
The Defra budget has been maintained at £2.4b but with the commitment for each government department to reduce expenditure by 2% means a real terms reduction in money available for such things as delinked BPS payments and SFI.
In Scotland, an increase in the block grant may appear good news, but those in Holyrood have a habit of dipping their hands into the supposedly protected agriculture pot, so don’t expect a sudden increase of funds available to Scottish farmers. In fact, from 2025 the Barnett Formula is being applied to agricultural funding, so we are more likely to see an overall reduction in available cash for subsidies.
There are of course some unanswered questions which will hopefully be addressed when further details emerge. It is however more important than ever that farmers seek the professional advice of their accountants, solicitors and advisors, to mitigate these budget changes, Especially when it comes to succession planning and the transfer of assets.

Farm Tenancies
We are delighted to invite you to our November meeting. We will be joined by two speakers to discuss their farm tenancy journeys
Craig Malone: Pitcairn Farm
Craig along with wife Katreen have recently achieved their dream of converting a 10-year tenancy into the security of full farm ownership at Pitcairn in Fife. Growing up in Stirling, Craig always wanted to be a farmer, but he knew the dream of farming his own land would be incredibly difficult to realise. After leaving Auchincruive Agricultural College he began his journey in farming working as a stockman before finally taking on the tenancy in 2012.
Andrew Marchant: Clonhie Farm
Andrew along with Aileen and their two young children, have been farming since 2012, when they took on the tenancy of 93ha at Clonhie Farm from Buccleuch Estate. Starting with 12 ewes, they now run a herd of 65 pure Luing and Aberdeen Angus cross Luing cows, a flock of 850 ewes, deer and 200 Aberdeen Angus cross dairy stores. Andrew is also involved in a contract farming agreement.
Admission Fee
Farmers £15.00 for the whole season (4 meetings) or £5 for a single meeting
Farm staff and under 18s £3 for the whole season or £2 for a single meeting

Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland - organically.
The new hens are in, just. They arrived this morning and so far, so good. They’re looking well, we need to just keep an eye on feed and water intake in these early days to make sure growth rates are on track. Then we can increase the hours of light. This evening the ‘putting to bed’ exercise went well. Hopefully there will be less and less hens down each evening. Admittedly we had a good team with us this evening; many hands make light work is very true when it comes to putting hens up at night! We are looking forward to moving to a new packer in three weeks. It’s been a while coming as we had to hand in our notice with our current packer over a year ago. A few weeks ago we had a Bluetongue scare. A poorly calf displayed all the symptoms of a calf with pneumonia, high temperature, listless etc but also had a lesion in its mouth. Correctly, the vet queried whether it was bluetongue, and within a couple of hours the APHA team arrived and for 48 hours we were turned upside down. Every animal on the farm was checked, the last six months movements and vet and med records checked. To be fair the blood test results came back very quickly and were fortunately negative and our stress was short lived. Fat cattle are all in and have been fluked, wormed and had their backs clipped out for winter housing. Cows and calves are still out, helped by this recent spell of mild and dry weather. The calves have completed their vaccination programme prior to housing. We will scan the cows at the end of the month once they are in and will also test for Johnes as well as fluking in-calf cows and vaccinating them for BVD and Leptospirosis. The new silage pit has been opened and silage is looking good. It’s been a huge investment for us and should last a lifetime or two. Hopefully we will have made a wise choice investing in a business to last. Which leads me nicely onto my political rant.
I was thinking about not writing about the budget, however that is impossible. It affects us all; tenants, owner occupiers, rural business, any small business. They have sledgehammered us all on every angle. The APR issue is massive, but it’s taking the press headlines away from the other big issues of BPR being reduced, employer’s NI increasing, slashing delinked payments, Vat on twin cabs, tax on imported fertiliser. There’s bound to be something I’ve missed, however the point is they are displaying a massive lack of understanding of the rural economy, a lack of understanding about how farming businesses operate, the values and the returns, and this is all wrapped up with a high level of arrogance and ignorance about our businesses and our lives. It’s got to be serious to get me to travel to London, and this is serious, so I will be heading down on the 19th.

Talking......from Lincolnshire
November 4th 2024
Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 1000ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd.
Thursday afternoon took me back to when I was a vulnerable 12 year old and the big boys were picking on me. Not because I was better at sport than them, which I was, or the fact I was a cleverer than them, which I am, but I had a weakness which was I wore glasses and had a very mild lisp. This seemed to make me fair game. I had parked all of this in the “not important” part of my brain until the budget when all the emotions I had kept a lid on for 30 years came flooding out. Every time the chancellor opened her smirking face, she hit me between the eyes. Whether I am the most persecuted man in the UK I am not sure, I am humble enough to admit I am not the cleverest nor the best at sport, but it certainly feels like it. Every time she mentioned another idealistic socialist measure, it applied to our family businesses. In fact the only measure we don’t qualify for is the only one I aspire to; the 50% increase in private air duty.
towards Labour’s
The gross incompetency and lack of basic understanding of economics by the government is worrying. It is plain to see not one of them has ever run a business. And what is worse is the way the Labour party delivered this budget. All smirks, laughter and cheap suits, despite them being bought by delusional peers.
Whilst debating setting fire to tyres on the M1, or trying to persuade the farming community not to accept any sewage sludge for 6 months my mind swung back to more pressing matters. Producing wheat at the same COP as a Ukranian/Russian/Australian (delete as applicable). It is amazing how having this thought makes every tractor quotation sat on my desk look quite unpalatable. I am now farming 1000ha and I can not justify buying a new tractor as my prime mover, or a lightly used one. With this realisation I went to see a lovely chap about hiring a crawler to do the heavy work. We had a great hour reminiscing and talking tractors, up until he said he could only provide a “medium” big tractor, not a “big” big tractor. Spotting my crestfallen face, akin to a vulnerable 12yr old I fear, he said he knew of a different make of tractor that was being traded in which was immaculate. So I followed it up and hopefully the deal will be struck before you read this! This then leads to the next question. What to pull behind it? I need two rows of shallow discs, subsoiler legs, a DD packer and transport wheels preferably to the rear. A Sumo Trio is the wrong way round, adapting a machine in the workshop worries me when there is 450hp on the front and the 2 machines I have had priced up are both over £80k. At least I won’t need to worry about paying the socialists any income tax!

It is very wet, so a couple of days in the workshop and this 40yr old cultivator is now a drill

Talking......from the boundary
I think I have got my head round the American political system with 244 million eligible votes being condensed down to 538 ‘Electoral College Votes’. It is further confused with the colour of the parties being opposite to ours Red for right, Blue for socialist/liberal. I stayed up until 12:30 last night watching the results but it does not have the excitement of our general election. I went to bed none the wiser. From this side of the Atlantic Trump is viewed as an unpredictable, incoherent philanderer who, at 78 years old, should not be allowed to lead the wealthiest democracy. Our views are formed of what we read and hear in the media and not of some of the reality on the ground with inflation and uncontrolled migration.
The size of Government debt in the Western world is really alarming with record levels of borrowing having to service unprecedented amounts of interest. Our new Government is taking money from productive tax payers to prop up the unproductivethis is a spiral that can only lead in one direction. They boxed themselves into a corner by refusing to raise the ‘easy taxes’. If they really want to increase the tax take they should not have ruled out changes to VAT. This is a discretionary tax, that those with higher disposable incomes can choose to pay more if they so wish. Essentials such as food and rent are not subject to VAT so the most disadvantaged are not unfairly discriminated against. Instead they have chosen to penalise the rural economy with very unfair and sudden changes to APR and BPR. If plans for succession were based on the belief that no tax would be payable on death as the farm fully qualified for APR, to have this assumption suddenly removed has created huge uncertainty for many families. And there was a lot more in the small print of the budget – a carbon tax from January 2027 on imported fertiliser equivalent to £75/tonne of AN and double cab pick ups to be treated as cars from April 2025 which will make them ineligible for capital allowance claims.
Traditionally, Labour Governments have won their majority with urban seats, and have been able to ignore the rural opinion. In the most recent General election with their huge parliamentary majority there are many labour MP’s representing farming constituents and they are having to learn fast the way food is produced and the way the countryside works. With none of the cabinet having any experience of business let alone agriculture they are going to have be shown some hard truths.
I look forward to seeing you in London for the demonstration on November 19th.

Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise. I usually try and avoid writing about politics in Agrimart. Firstly, I don’t want to cause offence or controversy and secondly there are plenty of other media sources where you can read someone ranting about politics. But I am somewhat reeling following last week’s budget announcement and need to get a few things off my chest. Let me just clarify that I am not a supporter of any political party, in fact I find them all equally disappointing. They have all played their part in recent history of making this country a little bit worse. Rachel Reeve’s Budget announcement was a real sucker punch to the farming sector. There had been murmurings that Agricultural Property Relief (APR) was in her sights, but no one really believed it would happen and certainly not in a way that would punish the majority of family farms. The changes to National Insurance are also a hard pill to swallow for many employers.
The metropolitan liberals in charge of Labour seem to have no grasp on the farming sector. And I get the feeling they have no real intention to engage with the rural sectors. Steve Reed the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (the one who reportedly wears £280 wellies donated by Labour peer Lord Alli) comes across as a Labour lackey whose Party interests and personal ambitions trump his role in defending the farming industry.
It’s all hugely demoralising. Farming is tough and the thought that you are building something for future generations can get you through the darkest times. This was spun as a budget for “working people”. Farmers clearly don’t fall into this category despite being the very definition of working people.
I am writing this only four days after the Budget and the dust will take a long time to settle. The implications to each farming business will take a while to consider. Farming owner/operators, landlords, tenants and contract farmers will all have to take stock and act before April 2026. Undoubtedly the tax experts and lawyers will make hay as businesses rush to plan succession, set up trusts or limited companies or simply leave the sector all together.
The effect on land values will be an interesting one to watch. The law of unintended consequences is limitless when intergenerational assets are targeted in this way. If land prices drop it will provide a measurement of the value buyers have historically put on the APR relief element. It might be a little - it might be a lot. We cannot let this get our amazing industry down. We must fight for farming and our own patches of this country. Farmers and the land will be here a long time after these dismal politicians are given the heave-ho.

Talking......New Zealand
November 5th 2024
Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing.
I’ve been allowed off the heavy rolling, although after 100mm of rain last week I note there is some new rolling to be done on the dairy farm where the cows have done some pugging. The generally favourable spring continues. The rain last week brought heavy snow inland and dropped temperatures down here but it has kept the irrigators idle which is welcome.
The spring barley (and some of the neighbours pea crops) got too wet but the autumn sown wheat and grass seed crops have soaked up the rain and are looking pretty good. The lambs have all gone and yielded a healthy margin for the boys (bought at $85/hd and sold for $165/hd on average) and the wee fella is getting good money for some beef cattle and the dairy beef calves he reared. The CharlieX and HerefordX bull calves have been sold forward at $800/hd at 110kgs lw which rewards him quite well for the work.
Edwina (his Sydney stunner) and their 3 children have fed the calves every morning for 4 months before she goes off to nurse and the kids go to their day care cage. I have noticed though that since I’ve finished the heavy rolling I seem to have a growing number of mokopuna responsibilities. I was asked if Margot our redhead could take Monty the Springer to school country day. Their old spaniel had recently died. I had to fashion a lead out of baling twine to make him look civilised but despite all that effort he only came 2nd; losing to his far less talented
Cocker friend Claud lead by Charlie (daughter Blondie’s son). Monty has made it clear he doesn’t want to be humiliated like that ever again. Cocking his leg on the headmaster may not have helped!
