A NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE
Last week I had the most nerve wracking experience I have ever had in my 69 years. I was going down a steep narrow track with a sharp bend near the bottom where there was a bridge to cross. The bend was too tight for me to get round in one turn which meant reversing up and gradually working my way round the corner. The problem was with his heavy foot constantly on my brake I ran out of air and the brakes ceased to work. There I was faced with a steep drop ahead and the only obstacle saving me from plunging into the depths was a lone tree but once I had turned a bit more the tree was not there to prevent me. To give him some credit he stalled me, left me in gear and that held, giving him time to work out how we could get out of this precarious situation. With sweat pouring from both our brows we saw our lives rushing before us. Just then there was a knock on my door and out of the blue a digger driver appeared offering to help. He kindly drove his JCB 360 tracked machine down from the other side, put his boom in front of me, I crashed into his bucket breaking a headlight and denting my water ballast tank but at least he held my 14 tonne weight. Out of gear and with my engine at full revs I managed to build up enough air in my tanks to allow full braking and then gingerly I reversed back up the track refusing to contemplate crossing the bridge. I now need a new light, and black paint to cover the dents and scratches, I won’t hold my breath to see when and whether that will happen. Back home I have been doing what I am really good at – pulling mobile hen sheds on flat ground. I pulled one off the muck here last week, and today I am going to pull it into position as Bogdan has finished washing and disinfecting it. With the young boss on holiday it never ceases to surprise me what he is still capable of. Being three years older than me I know how tired age can make you feel after a long day I look forward to seeing you at the Border Union Show, I don’t look a pretty sight so please forgive me as I age gracefully with dents, rust and broken lights.

Pulse Processing Ltd (PPL) began de-hulling Faba Beans in January 2024, working out of Coastal Grain’s site in Belford, Northumberland using its own patent-protected technology. The process works at 98%+ efficiency in removing hulls from the kernels, unlike traditional de-hulling technology working at only 85% efficiency. This allows the Faba Bean Kernels (FBK - the de-hulled inner bean) to be used in further secondary processing, adding value to the original harvested bean. Our technology is also suited to other legumes, such as peas, soya, lupins, imported chickpeas and other grains for the purpose of de-hulling/de-corticating.
Robin Appel Ltd, a Hampshire based grain merchant, handle all our purchases off-farm and from the trade, so farmers have no concerns regarding security of payment.
As FBK are typically 25-30% protein, most of the production goes to aquaculture where fish require a high protein diet. They have huge sustainability credentials, which is becoming increasingly important to all end users.
PPL is actively pursuing pet food, farm animal and human food markets because the nutrient profile of FBK is so impressive. It has gluten free protein and low-glycaemic starch, which takes time to digest, helping diabetic and obesity problems. The lowglycaemic property is because of the resistant starch content, so called because it resists digestion in the small intestine but passes through into the large intestine, where it ferments, producing short chain fatty acids (pre-biotics), which nourish and help
proliferate the production of good bacteria in the gut. This is extremely advantageous in young animal diets – piglets, chicks, turkey poults and pre-ruminant lambs and calves.
In the human population, gut health has become the number one focus regarding diet and wellbeing. FBK’s are ideally placed to help the 40% of the global population that now have a gastrointestinal disorder, with many being gluten intolerant.
PPL has a strategy for the agronomy of Faba Beans, in that it wants to contract grow using an agronomy package rolled out by David Cunningham, Dods of Haddington, one of the foremost agronomists in the U.K. This cost-effective package will offer better and more consistent results on yield and protein content, together with the removal of harmful chemicals from the food chain. Importantly, it’s also about looking after the health of our most prized asset, the soil, which we have ignored for the past 6 or 7 decades.
Faba Beans have been undervalued for years, with a protein content more than double that of wheat, the present price differential does not reflect its true value. It is our aim to raise the farm gate price of beans and the efficiency of our de-hulling process allows us to pursue higher margin markets, which will help to get more beans in the ground.
A good crop of Faba Beans is carbon negative, it fixes nitrogen not only for itself, but also for the following crop. It sequesters CO2 into the soil, adding biodiversity and improving the environment. Nutritious, healthy and sustainable, that’s got to be worth something!

I had a really enjoyable day at the Highland Show and it was great to get off the farm and catch up with friends over a few drinks. For the first time I took Jess and the children up on the Saturday which they loved - some more than others! The endless rows of machinery was like manna from heaven for Wilf!

The unsettled pattern of weather we have had all year continues. We managed to get lucky and make some good quality hay for the ponies as well as finish off the pullet shed tracks. Topper hire got off to a pretty steady start this season partly down to the late spring, but has picked up recently. Having hired toppers out for more than 20 years we have experienced almost every type of damage and breakage you can imagine. They have come back with no blades, irrigation pipes wrapped around them and PTO shafts looking like boomerangs. So when I received a phone call last week saying that there was a problem with the topper I was pretty confident whatever it was we could fix it. When I was then told that the tractor had caught fire and completely burnt out my heart sank. Hire had suddenly got busy and both toppers were booked out. The topper looked like a write off due to the heat damage it had suffered and I was concerned how quickly we could get a replacement. Incredibly within less than a week the topper had been written off by the assessor, a new one had arrived and the insurance money for the old one was in our bank account. Finally, after what seems like an eternity, we have got our short term let license for the treehouse. It appears that all we were waiting for was approval from the fire safety officer who has over 1000 properties to work through in our area of the Borders. All he needed was a few photos to show fire alarms, emergency lighting etc. Once he had received this the license came through almost the next day which is a great relief. The treehouse is still proving very popular with the next few months completely booked out which is fantastic.

The start of July is always very busy for Jess and the children with end of term shows, prize giving and sports days. I always try and make an effort to go to as many of these events as possible, especially as they usually occur during one of the quieter weeks on the farm. Having been unable to attend a lot of things during the year I know Jess and the children appreciate me being there.
Spread onto growing crops.
We are currently on holiday in France with Jess’s family for the week. We are staying in the Dordogne, one hour east of Bergerac. Although well ahead of UK harvest there still appears to be lot of oilseed rape and wheat to cut. Speaking to a few locals they have had a terrible summer so far; cold and wet. Thankfully the weather here has improved from the torrential rain when we arrived and day time temperatures are around midtwenties, although the evenings are still on the chilly side. Reassuringly we are not the only country that has had a terrible year - weather wise.
Manure can be delivered by Tractor & Trailer Manure mixed with a high DM product, perfect for stockpiling and increased organic matter

Talking......New Zealand
July 10th 2024
Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing.
We’re half way through winter and it’s been easy for us.
Rainfall is running at about half our average, the ground is dry and as a consequence the stock are wintering well and wheat is well established.
We’re lucky to have irrigation to ensure the quality and quantity of our winter feed. Farmers in North and South Canterbury, especially those on hill country, were hammered by the dry summer and autumn and are now desperate for feed. This comes on top of a collapse in prices for sheep meat and no lift in wool, so it is a tough winter for them.
In the meantime I‘ve been trying to inject some sense into regional government decisions. Jeremy Clarkson might be tempted to think that the Oxford Council are uniquely stupid… he’s wrong of course. Stupidity is universal although there is evidence to support the view that higher concentrations of stupidity are to be found around council tables.
Our council has just turned down an application for a solar farm in the sunniest place in NZ. What surprised me was the anti renewable energy rhetoric from the greens.
We have a few green politicians, though not as many as there was a while ago. One has been sacked for stealing, one for illegally exploiting immigrant labour, and one for drink driving, crashing into a police car and then assaulting her arresting officer. Apparently it wasn’t their fault. The stress of saving the planet by banning cows and solar panels; throw in additional concerns about gender uncertainty and colonisation and it is clear that they were forced into their crimes.
It is clear to me that the really stupid politicians are those like me trying to bring sense into all this.
The antidote for political stupidity

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 500ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd.
I don’t like eggs and I don’t like cultivation. Yet as each year passes, I manage to avoid eggs successfully but can’t help but indulge myself with a bit of recreational cultivation. I grow winter bird food as my part of saving the world and unsurprisingly it is always placed on the least productive land, which on this farm means it is wet… So wet in fact that it requires opening up each spring to let it dry, leaving a 4 minute window where the soil goes from too wet, to too dry. It is currently like concrete…
During this mind-numbing process I thought I would listen to something interesting. I have an aversion to the BBC because I think they are numpties, I dislike commercial radio ever since they played “Livin’ la Vida Loca” 16 times in a single day silage carting in the late 90’s, and have now since started playing well meaning adverts. All of which result in me dying of something terrible and I would just rather not know.
So who does anyone turn to in their hour of need? The Uk’s Sexiest Man, Clarkson. Jezza did a fascinating historical series 20yrs ago, which if you can zone out of the ridiculous advertising for a canine lead/umbrella hybrid combo on a popular video site, is well worth a watch. The two I listened to were about the commando’s raid at St Nazaire, and the history of the Victoria Cross. The overriding message was how ordinary people can do remarkable things in the most unassuming manner, with an underlying message of “lions led by donkeys”. There is more than a passing parallel with the political parties at this General Election. Has there ever been a more abject list from which to choose? The country will be red by the morning. Is it because they have a plan, or credibility? No, it is because the other ones stuffed up. Not a great recommendation.
And these bungling morons will carry on thinking they are remarkable individuals as they sit wearing a cheap suit in Parliament, whilst steadfastly refusing to deal with their issues from when they were all grossly unpopular at school. Cocooned in their decaying Palace coming up with ideas like the SFI for example. We were recently contracted to mow some grass which is managed under option IG2 “Winter Bird Food on Improved Grassland”. The theory is you mow the grass in May-June giving it a chance to seed again before winter giving the birds a food source for when the Beast of the East rolls in. The unintended consequence is that there will be no birds as no nest will survive the mowing, nor fawns and leverets for that matter, who went from taking their first uncertain steps on a sunny day to being on a 4000rpm spin cycle through a flail mower. In the words of everyone’s second favourite Scotsman*: “We are Doomed” *South of the border we all know you aspire to be sat on horseback wearing blue face paint! It seems so wrong

Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise.
A couple of months ago an old mate phoned me with an invitation. He and another friend had bought a couple of 4x4’s and were planning on joining a Pickups for Peace (P4P) convoy to deliver vehicles and aid to Ukraine. They needed another couple of co-drivers and I didn’t hesitate to accept. The P4P charity had been on my radar since it was started in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as one of its founders, Mark Laird, lives locally to me. I knew of others who had gone on previous convoys and having followed Ukraine’s plight on the news was keen to do my bit.
The convoy which set off in mid-June comprised of 37 vehicles laden with supplies driven by 69 drivers. Vehicles had been donated from all over the UK from a complete diversity of people.
Originally the charity was mostly supported by the farming community but now people from all walks of life and backgrounds are involved. The vehicles are spray painted green before departure and then cross the channel by various routes and then assemble in Poland ready for the crossing into Ukraine. Our chosen vehicles were a Nissan Pathfinder and a Landrover Freelander. Later named Nigel the Nissan and Fanny the Freelander (it’s not only Wendy who gets a name) they didn’t miss a beat for the whole journey. Two long days of driving through The Netherlands, Germany, Poland and onto Lviv in Ukraine. Having never been to Poland or Ukraine I was fascinated by the landscape we drove through. Some individual fields in Poland would easily have been bigger than many Scottish farms but sat next to the small 1ha strips of farmland that serve as remnants of a different time. Poland is quite clearly a country in the economic ascendency with the motorways full of lorries and lined with vast distribution warehouses and factories. It’s clearly a country going places with a vibe, energy and purpose that is clear to see.
Having congregated a few miles short of the Ukrainian border we formed a close convoy and headed for the border. With so many vehicles, people and supplies for the Border Control to inspect it took a few hours to cross and the reality of entering a country at war was starting to sink in. Once clear of the border, under Police escort, we drove into Lviv.
Lviv is home to over 700,000 people and has the most beautiful city centre which is a UNESCO world heritage site. At first glance it looks like many other European cities at time of peace, with streets full of tourists (from other parts of Ukraine), shoppers and diners in the various eateries. Being around 1000km from the frontline it is a safer haven than most cities but doesn’t make it immune to the war. Energy infrastructure is targeted, a midnight to 5am curfew exists and air raid sirens are not unusual (we experienced two the short time we were there). Soldiers on leave or heading off to the frontline are evident as, sadly, are the funerals of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. Speaking to some of the soldiers about their experiences, views on the war and their invaders were some of the most interesting and emotional conversations that will stick with me for a long time. What these people are enduring is beyond comprehension for us.
The whole trip was far more emotional than I had expected. The trucks we delivered are estimated to save, on average, ten lives as they shuttle men and materials in and out of conflict zones, evacuating areas under siege and transporting the wounded to safety. Our truck carried the bulk of the convoy’s medical donations with tourniquets, blast bandages and chest seals much needed. The Ukrainians are extremely grateful for the trucks and supplies but beyond this they are also truly appreciate the very fact that we, foreigners, are there and haven’t forgotten the heavy burden this country is facing.
Pickups for Peace has already donated 375 vehicles in 13 convoys with more planned. I urge anyone to visit www.pickupsforpeace.co.uk and see how they can help. Donations of vehicles, drivers, supplies or money are required. Ukraine is a beautiful country with the most resilient people. Only two days drive from the UK, through Europe, this country is facing unimaginable horrors. P4P is one way of us doing something to help. Slava Ukraini.

Talking......Business with SAC Consulting July 2024
Andrew Coalter is a Senior Agricultural Consultant and Area Manager in the Perth office. Whole Farm Plans
Scottish Government have been working with multiple stakeholders in Scottish agriculture to develop a roadmap to reformed agricultural policy. New policy is being developed to: “Support farming and food production in Scotland to become a global leader in sustainable and regenerative agriculture.”
The first announcements have been made surrounding transitional years of 2025 and 2026 for full scheme roll out in 2027. Support will be approached in four-tiers, with different types and level of commitment at each tier. The first changes will come into effect in 2025. This includes changes to cross compliance and the introduction of a ‘Whole Farm Plan.’
From 2025, every farmer and crofter will need to demonstrate that they have started to review and baseline their farms by completing at least 2 out of a possible 5 options:
Audit/Plan name
Animal Health and Welfare Plan
Biodiversity Audit
Carbon Audit
Integrated Pest Management Plan
Soil Sampling of permanently managed Region 1 land
Validity
Annual review
Five-year review
Five-year review
Annual review
Five-year review (every Region 1 field sampled once over a five-year period)
The order in which these are carried out is up to the individual business. It is possible that some of the measures are currently already being practiced by businesses as a requirement through quality assurance or supply chains, in which case nothing else is required other than confirming their completion on your SAF Application in 2025. In 2026 it is likely that farmers and crofters need to have more than two audits and plans. By 2028, all businesses will be required to have carried out all of the audits and plans that make up the Whole Farm Plan that are applicable to their business as a condition of receiving Scottish Government Agricultural support payments. Although not compulsory for 2025, from 2028 farmers and crofters will be required to produce a nutrient management plan (NMP) to complement their soil analysis which will provide recommendations for crop and grassland nutrient requirements, based on the determined nutrient status of soils.
Where measures are not currently being met by businesses, it is worth noting that funding is still available through the Preparing for Sustainable Farming (PSF) scheme until the end of 2024 for carbon audits and soils.
Your local SAC Consulting office can assist your business with completing each aspect of the Whole Farm Plan. Please get in touch for assistance on any of these matters.

I have to confess to profiting out of the general election. With all the scandal surrounding those with inside knowledge of the date of the election and then placing a bet that it would be held in July. It got me wondering what odds were on offer for the result. I was amazed by the choices from bookmakers. I thought I would bet on the chances of our local Conservative candidate being re-elected. With the party so unpopular I imagined the offer would be odds against, I was staggered to see John Lamont at 5-1 on. Definitely not worth a punt so I decided to take a wager on the Conservative Party getting more than 100 seats at 5-2 which swelled my account by £25, but the £10 I bet on the turnout being 62-65% was lost so £15 is the net benefit. I don’t think I should refer myself to the gambling commission!

I had a great day last week stewarding Angus Jeffrey who had kindly agreed to judge the cattle classes in the St Boswells Show Stock and Crop Competition. It was a perfect day to drive round the Borders and we had some wonderful views that cows enjoy every day. There were eight herds of cows and calves to be judged in one class and four mobs of grazing cattle in the other. Although suckler cow numbers in Scotland are in decline with pressure coming from alternative land use (forestry) in the hills, lack of skilled stockman willing to work the necessary hours, and the pure financial cost of keeping a cow, it was so encouraging to see owners who really enjoyed their stock and had passion and forward plans for their herds. Taking pride in what we have on our farms and being able to show these off to respected producers outside our area is one of the pleasures of the annual cycle.
Tom Pate has written a brilliant article on his drive out to Ukraine delivering vehicles to help in their fight against an unwarranted and aggressive act of aggression from Russia. The bombing of a children’s hospital in Kyiv on Monday shows just how low Putin’s forces will stoop. Borders Machinery Ring has the funds ready to buy a pick up that will be driven out in the next convoy. There was a very good turnout of Lothian and Borders members of Scottish Agronomy at their Wheat trials yesterday. Scottish Agronomy are the largest grower of trials in Northern UK, harvesting for the AHDB recommended list both treated and untreated on three regional sites in the Borders, Fife and Grampian. Supplementary replicated trials are also grown for benefit of the membership. With 55 wheat varieties in the AHDB trials we only focussed on varieties that deliver benefits to growers in this part of the world. With a very wet forecast we just managed to see all the plots before the heavens opened.

Small Holding Wanted
I am looking for a small holding approx 8 acres with a house to live in. It is my plan to run a small non-agricultural but sympathetic business from this as well as somewhere to call home.
This can be a stand alone property or as part of a working farm. I am willing to rent initially with the intention to buy. I am open to discuss any options you may have. Looking in County Durham or North Yorkshire areas.
