ENHANCED GRAIN TREATMENT
prices set remain high, reducing the reliance onbought feed this
making the most ofhome-grown cereals and protein will be essential to minimise feed costs year
However, this does not have to be complicatedor at the expense of performance
Treating cereals with ALpHA at harvest, or all year round with ALpHA365, not only increases the protein content of grain but also increasesits pH to9, allowing you to feed higher levels of alkaline starch to help maintain rumen health and increase the performance of dairy, beef and sheep of all ages and stages
Cheaper, Safer, Higher Performance
Sound to good to be true? The veryreal benefits of adoptinga simpler, more powerful ALpHA feeding system sometimes have to be seen to be believed If you wouldlike to see ALpHA in action foryourself, please get in touch
“I have been using ALpHA for the past 4 seasons and I am delighted with performance, gut health and cattle cleanliness The increase in protein meansthat the only feedprotein we have needed to buy in has been for the creep mix atgrass Once they areweanedat 9 months the cattle receive no extraprotein supplementation, which has significantly reduced our feed costs
The bulls areawayat 13 months old, currently averaging 1.65kgLWG/d frombirth, K.O at 56% and grading as well as continentals, which hasmeantthatouraveragecarcassvaluehas been exceptional this year
Robert Neill, Upper Nisbet Farm,Jedburgh
“Alpha is a perfect fit to my system as I can use it to treat grainboth at harvest andon dried grainlater in the season with ALpHA365
We also like the flexibility of being able to use a higher rateof urea when making ALpHA, which has significantly reduced our feed protein costs, especially in youngstock rations
“The mixes arealso simple and being able to see the cattle averaging 1.6kgLWG/dayon a silagebased TMR containing most ofour own feed is amazing”

Beautiful farmhouse with attractive gardens. Separate farm buildings and approximately 221 hectares (547 acres) of upland grazing and lowland pastures. Significant lifestyle, environmental and sporting appeal. Available as a whole or in two lots.
Whilst he was gallivanting around on his new electric bike, some of us had to stay at home and do some work. What a mixed bag I’ve had in the past five weeks. A bogged tractor not a million miles from here – ‘no names, no pack drill’ – he’s done a deal that as usual I derive no benefit from! What good is Robert’s electric bike to me? (There I go again, can’t keep my big radiator shut!). Next an opportunity to recover a truck that had gone off the road which he turned down with the lame excuse he wasn’t at home.
A fortnight ago I woke up feeling very flat to discover I couldn’t get up on one side. Fortunately I keep a spare but what an effort to undo my nuts. We had to call on that nice Andy Wight – he used all his might but to no avail. He had to go back to get his road tow compressor. Luckily that did the job and I am back on the dance floor as we had a call for another bogged tractor last week. This one had a loader and was well stuck but out she came no problem.
On Monday I was hitched to the big trailer to pull a hen shed at Lochtower and come back with the towing frame. This job was cancelled at the 11th hour as James had forgotten it was his wedding anniversary and Vicky obviously did not want me at her party! Then yesterday I pulled one of the houses on this farm.
Next outing is the St Boswells Show on the 22nd and the Border Union on the 28/29th July. Please come and say hello and take a drink from him. I earn it, he spends it.

PUTTING CARBON IN ITS PLACE
Being 'green' needn't be at the expense of your farming business, in fact, it can enhance it.
We spread crushed basalt rock on agricultural land, enriching soil health whilst locking away CO2 via enhanced rock weathering.
Basalt is a mineral-rich volcanic rock that has been applied as a top dressing for hundreds of years due to its benefits for soil fertility, soil biology, crop yield and health.
It is a locally sourced by-product of the aggregate industry which is screened to ensure it’s safe for agricultural use. Crushed basalt is suitable for all crops including pasture and has been approved for use in organic systems.
Our basalt is supplied and spread free of charge or heavily subsidised, using local contractors who know the roads and the land.
Basalt releases magnesium, calcium, potassium and other nutrients, reducing the need for fertilisers. Basalt can help raise and stabilise the pH of your soil, improving nutrient availability.
An initial trial with The University of Newcastle showed an increase in crop yield following the application of crushed basalt.
Farmers and landowners in the Scottish Borders, the central belt of Scotland and the North East of England.
UNDO has an ambitious target: to remove 1 billion tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere by 2030. So, we need your help!
If you are interested in enriching your soils whilst removing CO2, contact Joe Ritchie on 07400 858 333, email joe@un-do.com

Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley, oats and rye are grown, 400 Angus cattle are finished annually, 8000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose and 14,000 organic point of lay pullets are reared each year.
The last month has absolutely flown past and I can’t believe harvest has started already! For the third consecutive year harvest has kicked off a week earlier than the previous season. When I was young the week of the Border Union show traditionally marked the beginning of harvest. However now we are starting at the same time or even before many friends in the south of England! This does not make trying to squeeze in a holiday between the end of school and harvest very easy. Last year I promised the old man that I would definitely not miss the start of harvest again - but now I am writing this beside the pool in Mallorca feeling a little guilty. Thankfully I managed to book him in to cover for me between his cycling holidays, golf trips and friends’ houses in southern Europe. I am not sure how much they will get done as the weather is looking pretty unsettled for the foreseeable future. Despite the early start I can’t see us finishing on 13th August again unless the long range forecast is wrong. The hot dry weather of late May and early June seems a distant memory. We now have an abundance of grass and are clearly not the only ones as both our toppers are flat out on hire. Touch wood the two new machines have gone well so far with only the odd loose bolt to tighten and puncture to repair. I think they could be in for a very busy season judging how tall many of the rape crops are.
Not only has harvest started at home but I have also left a hen shed to be depleted, washed and moved as well as fat cattle to be drawn. Thank goodness for Bogdan and Yurii, without them I certainly would never be able to go away.
I really enjoyed the Highland Show despite the horrendous traffic jams getting in. I thought it was busier than it has been for a long time. It was great to catch up with friends, machinery dealers and walk the stock lines. It was such a good show that I thought the children would enjoy it. So on Sunday I headed back up with Wilf and Posy; Tilly was running in an athletics competition nearby later that day so thought it was worth a second visit. Wilf absolutely loved it and could have stayed for hours, Posy announced as we arrived that there were too many tractors and the machinery was boring! Thankfully she loved looking at the stock and watching the show jumping and the complaining dwindled! It seems like I have a future tractor man and shepherdess in the making.
I wish everyone a successful and trouble free harvest and look forward to seeing you all on the Agrimart stand at the Border Union Show - we will be ringside opposite the Members.

Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing. Various friends from around the world have alerted me to a letter in your Farmers Weekly, written by an Englishman who now lives down our way that claims that we NZ farmers live in an unregulated utopia and don’t know how lucky we are. I wish he knew what he was talking about.
July 10th 2023
The “toothless” regional council, Ecan, he refers to, has imposed some of the toughest environmental regulations and restrictions in the world on farmers in Canterbury. Compliance is ensured through regular on farm audits to ensure adherence to a raft of requirements including significant reductions in nutrient loss to groundwater and set backs from waterways for fertiliser and Ag Chem applications and cultivation. There are limits on when and how much fertiliser can be used, restrictions on land use change and limits to livestock numbers. On top of these regulations Ecan is now starting to squeeze the lifeblood out of the regional economy by refusing to renew water permits for irrigation. The Canterbury economy is based on irrigated agriculture so this is not good! And then there is an expectation from the council that if water quality in our groundwater doesn’t meet pristine standards farming will be required to cease.
However the Englishman thinks that because we can still use atrazine we live in utopia. Atrazine poisons the land and leaches into groundwater. We may be allowed to but I don’t know why anyone would use it. He is right that we shouldn’t whinge. That is the prerogative of English immigrants. Unless of course a huge weeping elm comes down in the middle of the night and destroys the swimming pool. Some limited whingeing is then permitted. Slightly buggered

My fear of the weather breaking for our four days of biking around the Borders exactly a month ago was completely unfounded. We had wall to wall sunshine for the whole time the intrepid group of ten were with us. We even had breakfast outside everyday, something not done very often. The focus was to bike to one of the four Borders Abbeys each day – Kelso, Jedburgh, Melrose and Dryburgh. The first day was to Kelso beside the River Teviot down the old Railway line, over the Viaduct, a stop at the Abbey and then back along the Tweed to a magical BBQ lunch cooked by Billy Hamilton of the Buccleuch Arms. A mere 32 miles, followed by two sessions at the Book Festival, a late dinner and plenty of vin rouge I feared the team might miss the 9am start planned for Friday. Not a bit of it, they were mounted on time, this time turning left out of our gate and biking via Minto and Denholm to a welcome rehydration and brownies at Bedrule. A short break before tackling the climb and long descent into Jedburgh. We stopped for a Borders history lesson at the Jail, a look at the Abbey and then uphill to Dere Street where we were met by Hugo, Jess and their three children. The young biked with us all the way to Yetholm, they kept up amazingly well considering how hot it was, and that they were on push bikes while us oldies all had electric assistance. Our lunchtime rendezvous was at Cherrytrees where we met up with ten more ‘Slow Cyclists’. 22 of us sat down to a very jolly lunch, hosted by James and Amanda Barnes, in their walled garden. With an excess of rosé and heat, both bikes and riders were driven back to Sandystones. The plan for Saturday was to walk from here to Melrose over the Eildons to have lunch in the Food Village at the Book Festival. In fact we biked to Bowden Loch walked from there and then after lunch met up with our bikes and had a challenging route home after visits to the Buccleuch Hunt Kennels and Bowden Kirk. Three abbeys ticked off, just Dryburgh to see. The final route on Sunday took us to Scotts View and Dryburgh to a picnic lunch beside the Tweed having inspected our grazing cattle in the Park at Mertoun. As the last biker departed in a taxi to Berwick station the thunder came and the heavens opened. Philly and I said to each other we can’t do that again, it was all too good to be true. We saw the Borders countryside at its best, our support team was fantastic with Hugo and Jess always on hand with water stops and transport, Bogdan collecting the bikes where we stopped and then meeting us to carry on in the saddle.
What we will do, so you don’t have to:
• Apply for felling licences
• Contacting planning authorities. e.g. badger licences, road closures
• A11 environmental needs
• Compliance with all health and safety regulations
• Hazard and risk assessments
• Welfare facilities
• Site / woodland management
• Track and loading bay creation
• Ash dieback clearances
• Reinstatement (if needed)

Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland - organically.
We managed to sneak a day away and take the children to the Great Yorkshire Show this week. It’s fantastic to see the pulling together of all things farming and rural at one event. Beautifully prepared livestock, displays of skills and talents, endless purchasing opportunities… big and small, as well as the opportunity to bump into and catch up with folk you’ve not seen for ages. The children had a different objective - gather as much free stuff as you can carry and endless blue sweets!
We had booked ourselves onto one of the CLA talks about Biodiversity Net Gain. It was a very interesting talk by a company that specialises in measuring the ‘base level’ of what biodiversity you have on your farm. In short big business will then pay you for making bio-diversity improvements... ”gains” on your farm to offset their carbon footprint. What we have learnt though is that if you have been making biodiversity gains for the last 30 years, you’re organic, you’re already protecting soil, water, flora and fauna, then the gain you could make will be minimal, so you’re less attractive for carbon offsetting. Typically, we’re now being penalized for doing it right. It is however a great opportunity for those who haven’t previously been keen to link with government led schemes. What the presenters were mindful of is that it is very early days in this trading territory, so not to rush into deals, but establishing what your base level is, was important.
We are getting on with developing our Higher Tier application. We are through the first hurdle and the scoring round, but are finding it challenging going forward. We have always had a good relationship with Natural England and have worked well with them through our Higher-Level Stewardship, where there was an element of flexibility with the prescriptions to make sure the scheme suited the farm, the geography, and the seasons. We are finding that the goal posts have moved somewhat, or whether the Higher Tier is an entirely different game, but the process is more rigid, and if your field or type isn’t a perfect match, then it appears to be a ‘no’ to many of the options. At the minute we are encountering barriers for trying to do the right thing. It almost feels like a double whammy… we can’t go down the private funded route, as we’ve done too much already, yet the public funded route is holding on very tightly to the purse strings.
Between us and our neighbours the National Trust has fenced off an area for Beavers to be released and today is the day they arrive. We are already seeing some of our fields doing a great job at water catchment to delay flooding further downstream, so it will be interesting to see what the Beavers add to that! I am also curious to see whether we actually spot them – how brave will they be in their new habitat.
On the farm, it seems to have been a frantic six months, with two hen houses to deplete, muck out, wash and re-populate, calving and lambing, silage making and clipping, but we’ve almost done it, with just the clipping to complete. The warmth and the wet have given a real boost to the growth of the wholecrop and the new brassica mix with Westerwold seeds that went in the other week.

Scotland’s aims to deliver adapta=on, with farmers needs sustainably, and to farm and cro? with phased transi=on. This phased transi=on present Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) from the beginning of the reform process. It is Base support and Tier 2 Enhanced Support.
Scotland’s future agriculture support regime from 2025 onwards, aims to deliver high quality food production, climate mitigation and adaptation, and nature restoration through supporting and working with farmers and crofters to meet more of Scotland’s own food needs sustainably, and to farm and croft with nature. Conversion from the current BPS will be a phased transition. This phased transition approach intends to introduce new conditions on the present Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) from 2025 while maintaining the present three region model at the beginning of the reform process. It is proposed that in 2026 BPS will be split into two tiers: Tier 1 Base support and Tier 2 Enhanced Support.
Tier 1 is directly supporting food production and active farming. Receiving this support will require meeting the essential standards in agricultural activity.
Tier 2 adds funding to Tier 1 activities where measures will help Scotland’s nature restoration and climate change mitigation targets. Eligibility will be dependent upon successfully undertaking Tier 1 actions and measures and demonstrating contribution towards the Tier 2 requirements. A list of suggested measures can be found:
https://www.ruralpayments.org/topics/agricultural-reform-programme/arp-list-of-measures/
Tier 3 will aim to support individuals, co-operatives, or groups to manage land more sustainably. This could be specific to a particular species or habitat, support conversion to alternative forms of agriculture such as organic production, encourage innovation and provide supply chain support.
Tier 4 aims to fund training, advice, and skills development to aid delivery of the options and outcomes aimed for in the other 3 tiers.

In 2025, new conditions will be introduced, existing cross compliance requirements will be the minimum requirement for future support (Payment rates or rather what percentage of the Ag Budget each Tier will access, have not been suggested yet). New conditions relating to calving interval will be added to Scottish Suckler Beef Support Scheme (How this will be recorded and measured is yet to be stated). Whole farm plans that include soil testing (Could be as simple as a statement declaring soil sampling frequency and uploading results), carbon audits (No indication of how frequently these will be required yet, but government funding is currently available under PSF and Farm Advisory Service), biodiversity audits, (No details yet, hopefully data gathering requirements should not be too onerous) animal health and welfare declarations (Might be as simple as a statement and completing a health plan with your vet), and supported business planning (show that a business is following guidance provided through ILMP specialist plans government funded through Farm Advisory Service). For those with peatland and wetland areas there is to be new protections as a new condition of basic payment. Once requirements are made clear SAC Consulting will hold meetings and provide guidance to help with compliance. Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise. Many productivity experts will tell you that “To Do Lists” are the key to getting things done, prioritising work whilst also clearing a cluttered brain. What these gurus of efficiency fail to tell you is that a To Do List is never done and in fact it can grow and grow until lists of lists become necessary to cope with the everexpanding workload. There are Apps available to manage your lists but I prefer good old pen and paper – scoring a job out with a scribble of ink is far more satisfying than ticking another box on a screen. Anyone who uses To-Do Lists will know there are always those certain jobs that never quite get ticked off. These are the jobs that are too difficult, too messy, too boring or just not that important. They lurk on the list for months and months and survive several editions and rewrites. Usually, June and July are good months for getting the To-Do List under control as longer days and better weather mean plenty of jobs can get accomplished in a day. Unfortunately, between off-farm commitments and “normal” workload my To-Do List remains stubbornly long and unmanageable. Maybe after harvest I’ll have time to get through it all… Last month I manged to get away to Claas HQ at Saxham, Suffolk for some combine operator training. Having never really had training on setting a combine it was time well spent. The course was solely for Trion 600 – 500 straw walking combines. We had a combine to get our hands on and a “simulator” with seat and controls to work through the various settings. The instructors were excellent with lots of hints and tips. Hopefully I can recall all the information we were given when harvest gets going. The facilities at Saxham are impressive with offices for Claas UK, a large warehouse for parts for onward distribution to UK dealerships; a training academy for apprentices, mechanics and customers; large showroom space and also test areas where customers can put machines through their paces. The MANNS Claas Dealership is also based there with a colossal 10-bay workshop. It’s a fantastic development and I would recommend a trip for anyone who gets the chance. In other Claas news the rye harvesting squad arrived on 8th July with a Jaguar 970 forager harvester. This 790hp beast chewed through the rye, chopping to 5mm whilst climbing the steep braes without breaking a sweat. A fleet of tractors and trailers conveyed the crop across to Fife with great efficiency meaning the forager was never stopped. An impressive logistical operation.
The Tay Road Bridge is currently closed north bound for six months due to resurfacing. With a narrow contra-flow operating on the south bound carriageway the forager had to seek special dispensation to cross the bridge over the closed section at a pre-arranged time to make the journey from Fife to Angus and back again. This put a bit more pressure on the team to complete works north of the Tay before their allotted time but thankfully all was completed on schedule thus avoiding a very long detour around by Perth. Note: this article is not sponsored by Claas however the writer is open to offers!

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 500ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd.
I often wonder why remarkable ordinary people attract so little attention, whereas there are all sorts of celebrities who are famous for absolutely nothing, other than possibly a chiselled jawline or trout-pout lips. Occasionally these unsung heroes get a gong from the establishment, but the vast majority don’t.
Last weekend my father-in-law embarked on a 70 mile run around Rutland in order to celebrate his 70th birthday and to raise money for Crohn’s & Colitis UK, a cause close to our families heart since my son was diagnosed with Crohn’s back in May 2020. www.justgiving.com/page/robin-ball-70-at-70
In what was a truly remarkable effort, even Robin would admit his running style owes more to sheer determination than classical athleticism, he completed his run in 22hrs to be greeted by a crowd of well wishers and even more importantly, an enormous fry-up.
In what is becoming a bit of a Groundhog Day scenario, spring rainfall has again been noticeable by its absence. A wet period at the end of March and beginning of April only succeeded in delaying spring drilling, and even then, it just never dried as opposed to filling the aquifers. We have currently only had 56% of our expected rainfall this year and coming off the back of last year’s drought it is not encouraging. The plan for future years is to forget soil temperature and conditions and just get the spring crops in asap. It has now become far better to drill in marginal conditions in early March rather than wait for better conditions later in the month or early April.
The most perplexing thing about farming is how every year harvest seems to come as a massive surprise. This is my 18th harvest in Lincolnshire and still there are jobs I have known about since last harvest which have finally come to the front of my memory. So I need to get the GPS steering fitted to the combine, with a new driver it will help make life as easy as possible, clear out the sheds, fix the light on the top of the rear trailer door - and work through a stack of paperwork I have allowed to build up whilst it has been “too hot” to be sat in the office.
We have managed to get the road repaired down at Worths. The farm is served by an amazing network of gravel tracks but having sugar beet and straw hauled down it all winter had left it impassable to cars and caused serious delays for the sprayer man too! The result has been fantastic and it will be a revelation, and hopefully having put a camber on the road and spent 3 days compacting it, it will last for many years.

Due to a change in management, The Duke Of Buccleuch Foxhounds are temporarily unable to accept any deadstock at Greenwells Kennels from 30th June 2023. It is hoped that normal service will be resumed as soon as possible.
