Looking to apply for Agri-Environmental Climate Scheme (AECS) grant funding for 2024?

While the AECS pass mark for 2023 was notably low, the Scottish Government assures us that this was merely an anomaly. Looking ahead to 2024, it is likely only strong applications stand a chance of being approved.

Given the already intense competition in the AECS program, compounded by tightening government budgets, the competition is expected to intensify further. To maximise chances of success, applicants must focus on improving their scores.

A strong scoring application would have a diverse network of wildlife corridors, a variety of habitats, effective measures to mitigate any pollution risks, and encompass a significant proportion of the holding.

MY WORST MONTH EVER

What a month! Nothing has happened, no calls, nothing to pull. I sit here staring at bales of hay all day, with a fertiliser spreader up my bottom preventing me from going out even if I wanted to stretch my legs. The demise of organic egg production from mobile sheds in the Borders is really beginning to hit home, although I hear some are being restocked so maybe this is just a dip. I hope so as I hear whispers of them wanting to put cattle in my current quarters, where would I sleep then? In some remote spot away from all activity and people to talk to, I imagine.

I don’t think he realises the pain I have been in since a stone went straight through my window. You can hear them flying out of the bedder when the cattle are strawed up. I feel really sorry for them being subjected to this agony everyday. I was half asleep when like a thunderbolt I felt this terrific sting and then the awful sound of shattered glass. I have had these windows for 69 years and now they’re broken. I feel like bursting into tears.

You would have thought with the wettest winter on record that my services might have been called on, the only job I have had was pulling out the Captain’s tractor and plough in early January. I don’t think he helps me by always publishing photos of my achievements, some people just want to keep their misfortunes private but he just can’t help himself.

You’ll never guess what I caught him doing the other day. They were both on their electric bikes en route to keep fit with Dave in his gym in St Boswells. They seem to be going twice a week! Too much too late if you ask me, he’s stiff, bent and can’t even touch his toes. The only positive out-come is it might increase his strength to manoeuvre me out of awkward situations.

I have a shed to pull on this farm in a couple of weeks’ time, so at least something to relieve the boredom. Please ask him to move the spreader I don’t like it there.

On Our Farm

March 6th 2024

Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley and oats are grown, 500 Angus cattle are finished annually, 8000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose and 8,000 organic point of lay pullets are reared each year. Last Monday every fertiliser spreader in the county was out getting the first dose of Nitrogen on winter cereals. Crops have come out of the winter well and travelling conditions were ok but certainly not perfect. We must count ourselves lucky that we are not farming in the south where the majority of winter crops have been drowned out and thousands of acres will not be planted at all this year. I was talking to a farmer the other day who had just come back from a funeral in Lincolnshire - one of the worst affected areas. It was so wet that there was a pump running flat out emptying the grave! Failed crops and the wheat price at rock bottom will lead to many farmers in England turning to SFI options which look more and more attractive. The big question is “does the government have enough money to pay for this if take up is way over their predictions?” The end of March/start of April is looking very busy with both a hen shed and rearing shed to deplete, wash, move and restock. Hopefully we will able to turn cattle out, spread fertiliser, drill the spring barley and get T0’s sprayed. All we need is a settled spell of warm dry weather! We have been getting well through the list of jobs which have been building up over the past few years. All tree guards have now been removed from a 6ha block of new woodland that was planted over 15 years ago. They had started to come off and the whole place was starting to look a mess. We also removed the guards from 1.5km of new hedgerows which were planted over five years ago and have grown really well. The idea is that by removing the guards when the hedge is still young it will hopefully fill out at the bottom and create a thick base which is a fantastic habitat for wildlife.

Last year Jess and I swapped houses with my parents. One of the stipulations of the move was that the green portal framed barn which is in the garden of my parents new home and built as a joiners workshop by the old owner, was removed. More than a year later we have eventually found the time to take it down. Bogdan, Yurii and I took the shed down in a couple of afternoons and even managed to get all the posts out. The removal of the concrete floor proved a little harder. It was all reinforced and was over a foot thick in places. The mini digger and pecker we hired was hopeless so eventually we had to get 14t 360° digger in which ripped it out in no time. All that’s left to do is fill in a rather big hole with topsoil.

Jess and I went down to London for my 40th last weekend. We had very kindly been given tickets to see ABBA voyage and Les Misérables on Saturday! They were both amazing shows for very different reasons. We spent Sunday cycling across London seeing friends on our electric lime bikes we had hired. There are so many cycling lanes it is a fantastic way of getting around London especially when the sun is shining.

The Scottish Register of Persons Holding a Controlled Interest in Land (RCI). Are You RCI Ready?

In April 2022, the Register of Persons Holding a Controlled Interest in Land (RCI) for Scotland came into force to help the public identify those persons who control decision-making for land and property in Scotland. Those affected will need to register with Registers of Scotland (RoS) before the extended grace period expiring 31st March 2024. Non-compliance is a criminal offence and could result in a fine of up to £5,000

The intention of the register is to improve transparency regarding land ownership by making information about those who have a controlling interest in land publicly available - those who ultimately make decisions about the management or use of land, even if they are not necessarily registered as the owner of the land. As it is not always obvious from the property registers, the RCI was introduced.

Each RCI entry is specific to a property in respect of which there is some sort of controlling interest over the owner/tenant, or someone else behind the registered owner/tenant. An entry contains information about the owner/tenant of the property, as well as information about the persons who are associated with the owner/tenant (i.e. the influencers or controllers, including off-register trustees/partners). The RCI is only relevant if Scottish property is owned, or leased under a long lease (more than 20 years), by certain ‘in scope’ categories of owner/tenant.

It is the registered owner (or tenant) of the property who is under a duty to submit the required information to the RCI. Individuals with a contractual or other arrangement in respect of their Scottish property and trusts, partnerships, unincorporated bodies and overseas entities that own or hold a long lease of Scottish property should consider whether an RCI submission may be required. Applications are free to submit and view online (RoS) and can be done by the owner/tenant or their agent/solicitor on their behalf. Going forward, you have 60 days to update the Register when changes occur. The Register may therefore not be completely up to date due to publication a minimum of 30 days after submission.

The rules that govern the RCI are set out in The Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2016 (Register of Persons Holding a Controlled Interest in Land) Regulations 2021.

The rules about ‘controlled interests in land’ are complex and legal advice should be taken. If you think that the regulations may apply to you, do not delay obtaining advice bearing in mind Easter holidays, this effectively means 28th March.

I feel we are very fortunate with all winter sown crops on the farm looking particularly well. We have been lucky not being as wet, compared to South of the border where there are many with ruined crops, fields never drilled and low grain prices making the cost of redrilling unattractive. The get out English farmers have is the Sustainable Farming Incentive which appears, to an outsider, to offer very attractive rates at minimal cost. From what I read and hear the uptake this year is going to be significant and I am sure will exceed Defra’s budget for the Countryside Stewardship schemes.

There is no doubt that soils are the thing of the moment. To state the obvious it has always been there, without it nothing would grow and we certainly would not have the global population without it. For many it has been a medium that provides the environment for plant production and multiplication but it has never been regarded as living matter, it has been seen as a host for invertebrates such as earthworms, slugs and snails. It is thought of as dirt, mud, rock etc originating from glaciers, volcanic activity, and changes in tectonic plates as continents are formed. I am as ignorant as any, with little understanding of what is happening in every teaspoonful of soil although my awareness is growing quickly. I dare to admit I am reading George Monbiot’s book ‘Regenesis’, he is no lover of farmers particularly ruminant producers with a special low regard for sheep who he refers to as the worst of all pests. The opening chapter is an in depth description of the symbiotic relationship that occurs between the smallest of species in the soil, too much for me to take in but it really does make one aware. Soil is a great sink for carbon, helping the journey to net zero, but can also be an emitter in plough based arable systems.

At Scottish Agronomy we have had a focus on soil health and management. The ‘Healthy Soils’ course that has been run over four half day sessions through the winter has been very well received and it is encouraging to see the majority of participants are the ‘next generation’. Courses have been run in four different locations throughout Eastern Scotland. At the annual conference held near Perth three of the four speakers were practicing regen agriculture, with all having a significant area in cover crops particularly through the winter months. The nitrate run off from an uncropped field compared to one with a growing crop was significant. Cover crops come at a cost, and can be fickle to establish in the small window after harvest. Neil White from Greenknowe, near Duns gave a very good account of his adoption of no till, now direct drilling all his crops both winter and spring. He was as much a sceptic as any and was reluctant to give up his plough and combination drill, not believing in his own ability to establish crops without inversion or even prior cultivation. We were told that not only is the spade an essential part of the modern toolkit so is a microscope.

No words from New Zealand this month, just a photo of loading out grasseed. Harvest seems to have gone well.

North of the Forth

March 4th 2024

Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise.

The first tentative fieldwork of 2024 has thankfully begun. Picking and choosing fields that will allow travel I have managed to get a start to fertiliser applications to give crops a sorely needed boost following a punishing autumn/winter. Being sown behind the subsoiler the oilseed rape ground was first “fit to travel” after the NVZ closed period, receiving a good dump of nitrogen to get it up and away. Hybrid rye benefits hugely from an early dose of N so was my next target with all receiving 75kg/ha. Wheat is now due to receive a pick-me-up but most fields still require a drier spell before I am brave enough to venture in with the sprayer. My trusty old Multidrive, used to apply the liquid fertiliser, is well shod with 700 tyres that travel well, however if you do get stuck, you get properly stuck and that is something worth avoiding (not sure Wendy would make the journey this far north).

Ploughing has been progressing well and should be finished the week of the 4th March. We have also managed to resow some wheat which was previously drowned out. Taking a chance during frosts on the 7th and 8th of February we ploughed out the worst affected areas and followed immediately with the one-pass. It wasn’t ideal but the seeds are now showing signs of life and should be through the ground shortly.

My biggest challenge this month has been dealing with scrambler motorbikes coming out of Dundee and causing chaos in the area. Instead of sitting at home watching Scotland beat England at rugby our local motorcycle enthusiasts decided to tear up and down one of my wheat fields. Their powerful machines and chunky tyres are perfectly designed for ripping young wheat plants out of the ground. The police and I are powerless to stop this as the motorised youth quickly disappear into the distance when approached and preventing their access is almost impossible. The police are hopelessly under resourced with call waiting times to their non-emergency, 101, number often in excess of 20 minutes. They are also not allowed to chase the culprits as the chance of causing an accident are too high. This lawless behaviour is frustrating to bear and is yet another challenge of farming on the urban fringe. The last month has involved a lot of meetings, conferences and AGMs . The time off farm has been interesting and thought provoking but I look forward to the coming few weeks with more time on the farm to get through the work. Longer days combined with the chance of improved weather would certainly aid me in conquering the growing list of jobs.

Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland - organically.

We have finally signed our Higher Tier Stewardship agreement and are now busy adjusting our stock numbers to suit the agreement. Natural England want a ratio of 60 or 70% cattle to sheep, so some of the breeding ewes are being sold to reduce our sheep numbers to 30 - 40% across the farm. We are endeavouring to get our SFI agreement signed up too, however a glitch in the Defra computer system is making it challenging. The chap from the RPA told Claire she had “broken it” as we were asking for it to compute a Higher Tier and an SFI in one go and it clearly couldn’t cope. Claire feels it may have broken her too!

Through the Higher Tier scheme, we have capital works grants for roofing over the muck stores and silage pits and concreting parts of the yards. Sadly, the grant does not cover the full costs involved, so we will have to borrow to fund the difference. We are aiming to get the large capital works done this summer, mainly because after a winter like this one, it does not make sense to be tipping muck outside – not only the mess created in getting to the muck heaps, but the loss of valuable nutrients. The logistics and timing of doing works to the silage pits is quite challenging. We will empty the pits in May and start filling them in June, so the window of opportunity is tight and knowing our luck it might be wet. Concreting the yards also has problems as the egg wagon arrives twice a week, so we need to time that for when the hens are out, which is in the Autumn. So again plenty of weather challenges.

The start of calving is just round the corner. Cows are receiving their boluses and scour vaccine as well as sheds being mucked out. As always, it’s a dilemma, as you want to keep all the heavily pregnant cows and heifers nice and calm, yet we need to put them through the crush. Hopefully we don’t get a knock.

We will shortly be depleting the “Martini” flock and what a relief it will be when they are gone. Just to recap, we christened them the Martini flock as they tend to lay their eggs “Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere” and they have been exceptionally hard work. Saying goodbye this time won’t be the usual test.

We have had a very challenging time recently as my Father, Ivan, passed away at the end of January. We would like to thank everyone, especially the team, for their kindness and support over these last few weeks as we were not expecting him to go. However, he had nearly 82 years of a life spent doing what he loved… farming.

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 500ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd.

I like to think I am a good farmer, possibly very good on occasion and hope the farm at Ewerby is evidence of this. I have 2 sensory tools to guide me on my farm’s performance which are both relatively low cost (if you exclude the penchant for gin, curry and holidays). One is my feet, the other my bum cheeks. Admittedly not something a multi-national conglomeration can sell you, but they are yet to let me down and do seem to correlate with the financial performance. Just by walking the soil I can tell its condition, Ewerby springs under my feet in a joyous way, Worth’s is solid in both dry and wet conditions, other than when it is really wet when we do progress to a squelch. These conditions can be felt through the seat when subsoiling which is why I like to spend some time on the tractor in the autumn. My great conundrum at the moment is “can I become a good contract farmer?” Currently the omens are not promising. A dreadful oilseed rape performance and generally below par yields last year coupled to weather issues this year has not made for a good start. It is a different mindset and a huge source of frustration when somethings are out of your control, and agents appraise your decisions with the benefit of hindsight. Yes, it has been exceptionally wet this year, but no, the fields should not be full of puddles.

Now the water levels are finally receding we are beginning to reach drainage pipe outfalls which have been submerged all winter. Sadly, we are having to dig up to 4ft back into the bank to uncover the still pristine outfalls which suggests this is the first time this operation has been conducted in 25yrs. I spent 6hrs last Saturday drain jetting a single 342m land drain which was only installed in 1999. This is not cost effective, and some other pipes have gone better, but what is really needed is a completely new drainage scheme to restore the farm to its former glories. This though comes at an unpalatable cost. It has been a long winter. I feel for all those farm workers locally who are wandering around the yard trying to find another wet day job. All the more interesting projects have long since been completed and they are now resorting to greasing the teleporter… again. Poor Colby came here to drive a variety of big shiny equipment and is currently spending every day in waterproofs with nothing but a 19yr old John Deere and drain jetter for company.

Yet with the sun shining through the office window comes a renewed sense of optimism and a desire to join the neighbours in their mud splattered tractors top dressing. This will wait for now as there are too many puddles to navigate but there is hope that by the time the next edition is published, we may have done some fieldwork…
