IMPROVE SOIL FERTILITY AND CROP YIELD WHILST REMOVING CARBON DIOXIDE FROM THE ATMOSPHERE

Being 'green' needn't be at the expense of your farming business, in fact, it can enhance it.

We spread crushed basalt rock on agricultural land, enriching soil health whilst locking away CO2 via enhanced rock weathering.

WHAT IS BASALT ROCK?

Basalt is a mineral-rich volcanic rock that has been applied as a top dressing for hundreds of years due to its benefits for soil fertility, soil biology, crop yield and health.

It is a locally sourced by-product of the aggregate industry which is screened to ensure it’s safe for agricultural use. Crushed basalt is suitable for all crops including pasture and has been approved for use in organic systems.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS FOR FARMERS?

Our basalt is supplied and spread free of charge or heavily subsidised, using local contractors who know the roads and the land.

Basalt releases magnesium, calcium, potassium and other nutrients, reducing the need for fertilisers. Basalt can help raise and stabilise the pH of your soil, improving nutrient availability.

An initial trial with The University of Newcastle showed an increase in crop yield following the application of crushed basalt.

I’LL VOLUNTEER

An 80 mile round trip up to Penicuick last month went without a hitch, it took about 30 minutes to pull one of the Stoddart family’s hen houses off the muck. I was amazed just how far my spades went into the ground, almost out of sight in the deep soils of Midlothian. I left at home at 9am and was back at 1pm, I drove past the layby at Glentress, just outside Peebles where I had conked out on my last journey up to David Stoddart’s farm. Nervously he put his foot down on my pedal and this time I sailed serenely by. Then last Sunday I had to forego my usual visit to Church as I was specifically asked by Anne to pull her shed at Ednam at 10am as the chaps with the terriers wanted to be there to see if there might be any vermin around. There were all breeds of canines jumping over my cable, running under the shed, I couldn’t see how successful they were but they obviously had fun. The journey home was not so smooth, leaving the farm I couldn’t get up any speed, I felt I was being held back. By the time I reached Kelso I felt there was something definitely not right. I suggested he got out and had a look round, he let all the air out of my accumulation cylinder, this released the air handbrake that had seized on and soon I was travelling again at full speed. The problem since then has got worse as all my brakes are now binding on, I fear another visit to A&E to see what the problem is this time.

He tells me he has volunteered to drive a ‘Pick up for Peace’ to Ukraine. Apparently he has been enthused by Keith Dawson and Angus Seed who have just returned from delivering 22 pick ups to Lviv. 35 people went out on this trip with an age range of 1874 so he should fit in well. I have not told Angus about his driving skills, I feel sorry for any pick up that has him at the wheel. I really feel like going out myself, as soon as they are asking for ‘Winches for Peace’ you count on me to be the first to volunteer.

On Our Farm

March 8th 2023

Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley, oats and rye are grown, 400 Angus cattle are finished annually, 8000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose and 14,000 organic point of lay pullets are reared each year. Inspections, inspections, inspections! Having had one a week for the past three weeks I am sick to death of them. Our free range organic hens are inspected annually by RSPCA Assured, Soil Association, BEIC, Food Standards Scotland and self-audited by the egg packer twice a year. Now that we have the pullet rearing as well as the four sheds each inspection takes a whole day. The preparation takes another day ensuring that all the paperwork is in the correct files and any new legislation has been adhered to. I estimate I spend 12 - 14 days a year dealing with these audits. What I find really frustrating is that many of them cover exactly the same areas. For our beef and arable enterprises we only get inspected once a year! I am sure that my fellow writer in NZ would not be so accommodating.

We have taken the opportunity during the recent dry spell to get hen muck on the organic grass and FYM on the last of the spring barley stubbles. With over 450 cattle being finished annually we produce a decent amount of muck. It is all stored in a purpose built barn and spread on stubbles in the autumn and early spring. Our manure is well rotted and of good enough quality to be applied with disc spreaders over 24m. This means that they stick to the tramlines at all times reducing compaction across the field. All spreaders have weigh cells so we know exactly how much has been spread. We aim to apply organic manures to 25% of the farm each year. In a season when nitrogen prices are so high these organic manures have never been so valuable.

Our fertiliser spreader is over 10 years old and has served us well. However whilst spreading the second last field of wheat earlier this week it started to make a horrible noise and the discs stopped working - typical. After calling the dealer and discovering a new one was in the region of £17,500 I thought I better look into the cost of repairing it. A full repair new gearbox, agitators etc… costs £3000 so my decision was not difficult. The last meeting of the Kelso Agricultural Discussion Society was held at the end of February. The meeting room was full, Jack Parsons, Mertoun Estates, and Sion Williams, Bowhill Farming Ltd, both gave fascinating talks about their very different farming enterprises. It is great to have two such forward thinking and enthusiastic farm managers in our region. All this year’s meetings have been well attended and there has been an excellent line up of speakers. As I begin my final term as chairman I would really encourage anyone who wants to join the committee to get in touch, we are always looking for new members.

Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 500ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd.

It has been a very educational month for me. I have been the victim of racial discrimination, which quite frankly I thought even football hooligans had grown out of, and I have seen first hand the result of climate change - possibly. To add insult to injury I had to pay through the nose for both experiences.

I am widely renowned as the worst skier in the history of skiing. I have no style, no panache and very little courage. The whole idea of standing on something slippery and then to attach something even slipperier to your feet is utterly alien to me, in fact it is daft. But being the best parents kids could hope to have, we felt we ought to let them have the opportunity to ski. Despite booking in plenty of time there was no ski school available so the kids were packed off to a dry ski slope in the country’s flattest county, on a fen. The feedback from the instructor was encouraging so off we traipsed. The weather was stunning. Never before have I worn only a t-shirt and jacket skiing, and no gloves, for an entire week and still been too hot. To have water running under your skis on the button lift was not a good sign, and for the slopes to be bereft of snow in the middle of February is of real concern to one and all.

Once up the mountain we stopped for lunch at a picturesque little restaurant only to be greeted by the most obtuse Frenchman I have ever had the displeasure of being associated with. As we went to sit down at a table he proceeded to tell us in 100mph French that the restaurant was reserved for the French, Belgians and Germans - not the English! More than 25yrs have passed since I did GCSE French and whilst I can understand what is being said, replying is another matter. He made it clear that he did not speak any English, at which point a managerial looking colleague passed whom I asked for a table. He was only too delighted and it turns out Frenchman #1 spoke perfect English when his boss was within earshot! Upon my return it appeared the whole of Lincolnshire had been drilled in a week. I would never contemplate spring drilling before the 20th March but the conditions were undeniably good. The frost here has made such a difference to seedbeds, even in untouched stubble. So having hitched the drill on off we set. 5ha in and we had some drizzle, enough to make it sticky and in February a bit of drizzle takes days to dry - and then the drill decided not to seed. It is an electrical fault so the first suggestion was to try a replacement control box. That didn’t work so then it was time to replace the motherboard on the drill. That didn’t work by which time it is 5pm on a Saturday afternoon and we have missed the weather window with cold and rain forecast. Let’s hope the dealers can make some sense of it in the morning…

Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his parents, Ivan and Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland - organically.

Last month we took the children away at half term skiing in Norway. We were very impressed on many levels. One thing that struck us was the marketing everywhere, supporting Norwegian produce and farmers; on the train, in the airport, in the hotel or up the mountain. A real passion for farm produce including wool. We have come home equipped with jumpers, hats and socks! In terms of a holiday destination, we can highly recommend it. People were very friendly, snow was great and Oslo airport was a delight with none of the stress that Geneva holds. Whilst we were away the 2023 Galloway Cattle Society Show and Sale was held at Wallets Mart at Castle Douglas. We managed to purchase a new bull, chosen and bid for by some very good friends, and we ended up with Ben Lomond Firestorm from the Ben Lomond herd. He looks very smart and will hopefully do the business.

The new hens at Garden House are almost fully into lay and currently laying at 90% at 23/24 weeks. Hopefully they’ll hit peak in the next few weeks and get up to 94 or 95%. East shield hens are depleting in May, so we are busy pulling together the plan for depletion, clean-down, shed prep and re-populating, as we’ll not manage to think about it during calving or lambing. We’re getting prepared for calving and lambing. Calving commences at the beginning of April and lambing the 18th, however the Suffolks are due to start lambing soon. Cows have received a pre-calving bolus and a vaccine to protect the calves against scour. Ewes are getting their Heptavac P and bolus. Joe has taken the opportunity to go self-employed. We wish him well. We are pleased to welcome back Martin into the team as our shepherd.

The holiday cottage market looks to have slowed these last few weeks, so we are looking to promote the cottage in other ways, and potentially using our lake as a wild water swimming venue, along with kayaking and fishing. There’s some homework to be done first, however hopefully it will encourage bookings.

We recognize there are very different policies at work in the borders, however in England we are now into our third year of cuts to the direct support via BPS. As of this next year we will have lost nearly 50% of our support which is now to be paid through “public monies for public goods” via the new environmental land management schemes. Sadly, at present, due to the Government insisting that these environmental schemes are calculated on an ‘income foregone’ plus costs basis, they just do not stack up nor encourage farmers to partake in the schemes. Without movement on this I believe that that this new domestic agricultural policy in England will struggle to deliver the desired outcomes.

As I drove to yet another ‘Net Zero’ meeting yesterday, I passed our local BP station which we all use for fuel and I realised that I hadn’t actually paid a visit for over three weeks. For the simple reason that I now fill up at home with energy we generate on the farm. Life has gone full circle. Before the days of the internal combustion engine, all the energy needed for personal transport was grown at home, if you had the space to do so, predominantly hay and oats in the winter and grass in the summer. Yes, I’ve gone electric and I have to say I love it. The actual driving experience is just very enjoyable, quiet, fast, comfortable and cheap – what more could you want from a car.

I have already suffered from range anxiety, my first long journey was 94 miles to the Scottish Agronomy conference in Perth. I had already driven 60 miles before setting off and thought that I would have sufficient charge to get me to Perth and home again. I realised that 90 miles of range left was not sufficient and to my surprise the Huntingtower hotel had no EV charging so I had to first locate a public charging place and then work out how to use and pay for it. The Broxden Park and Ride has a range of charging stations and a whole lot more under construction. The one I plugged into was very slow at 7.5 kws/hour (you soon learn that 1 kw = 3+ miles), after an hour I got bored, I managed to pay and set off with 110 mile range. Driving at 50 mph with the heater off I arrived home with 30 miles left in the battery. The answer is always to charge up before leaving home, use the 12 year old diesel engine vehicle for long journeys, and have all the charge cards needed for paying for recharging. Despite all the negativity there is about electric vehicles, I was really encouraged to read in the paper yesterday that the Argonne National Laboratory in the US has essentially cracked the battery technology for electric vehicles, discovering a way to raise the future driving range of standard EVs to a thousand miles or more. It promises to do so cheaply without exhausting the global supply of critical minerals in the process.

The joint project with the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) has achieved a radical jump in the energy density of battery cells. The typical lithium-ion battery used in the car industry today stores about 200 watt-hours per kilo (Wh/kg). Their lab experiment has already reached 675 Wh/kg with a lithium-air variant.

This is a high enough density to power trucks, trains, and arguably mid-haul aircraft, long thought to be beyond the reach of electrification. The team believes it can reach 1,200 Wh/kg. If so, almost all global transport can be decarbonised more easily than we thought, and probably at a negative net cost compared to continuation of the hydrocarbon status quo. This battery needs no cobalt and although it does use lithium, this can be replaced with sodium - a far more abundant element.

The Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Islands, Mairi Gougeon MSP made an announcement on 10th February regarding the future of agricultural support in Scotland and the timelines they are now working to.

It is intended that the Scottish Government will regularly update their published Route Map to ensure that the most up to date information is available which will help rural businesses to make plans ahead of the CAP replacement coming into force and consider any changes in the short term deemed necessary for their business ahead of 2025. The Route Map provides clear programme dates to explain when current schemes will transition or end, and when more guidance, support and information will become available. This Route Map can be found on the Rural Payments and Services website. During April-June 2023 the Route Map indicates the release of information on the new conditions for Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) 2025 and Voluntary Coupled Support (VCS) 2025 together with the Agriculture Bill Consultation Report. Realistically, will the implementation of the new agricultural support system happen within this timescale or are we looking at an extension of the current structure through to possibly 2026/27? And also, how much funding will be made available still remains to be seen. A list of the measures being considered and evaluated for inclusion for future agriculture support in Scotland has also been released by the Scottish Government. Guidance on the List of Measures is intended to provide more information on the types of activities you are likely to be expected to do in the future.

Financial support is currently available for undertaking carbon audits, soil sampling and analysis and animal health and welfare interventions for those keeping sheep and cattle. Sheep and cattle keepers can claim support for up to two interventions this year and a further two next year. The payment is to be £250 per option. Claimants will also receive an additional £250 for learning and development when they make their first claim for animal health and welfare interventions. Further information relating to this support including the list of interventions and the simple claims process can be found in the updated Preparing for Sustainable Farming Guidance on the Rural Payments and Service website

Additional government support has been provided to ScotEID to develop MyHerdStats, which offers users an insight into key performance indicators as a herd management tool. The software is available to all cattle herds using ScotEID and automatically generates trends into the herd’s performance through charts and tables and is entirely confidential to each cattle keeper. Turning to the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) if you are looking to make entitlement transfers for use in the 2023 scheme year, then you must have the correct form and documentation submitted to SGRPID before 3rd April 2023. May I also take this opportunity to remind you all that 2023 BPS Single Application Forms should be received by SGRPID no later than Midnight on 15th May 2023 to avoid any penalty or reduction in payment.

Talking......North of the Forth

Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise. In the past month I have achieved two ”firsts”. Getting nitrogen fertiliser on the day after the NVZ closed period ended is usually not possible with unfavourable ground conditions but this year I was straight on the land on the 16th February with OSR and rye getting priority. My second February “first” was mowing the garden lawn. Never in my life has the lawn both needed and been fit to cut so early in the year. Temperatures are set to plummet next week (w/c 6th March) but February was incredibly dry and mild. Whilst this weather is great for getting on with outside jobs it does trouble me that this is yet another indicator that our climate is changing at a rapid pace. I am clearly not the only one to be concerned, for every conference, meeting or webinar I have attended in the past month (February seems to be full of these) the topics of sustainability, net zero and carbon auditing are discussed. The issues are usually talked around and around at length with no clear conclusions or solutions being offered. After listening to endless hours of similar deliberations I must admit a sense of jaded deflation at the prospect of another meeting on this issue. The mere mention of carbon auditing triggers a physical reaction sending my eyeballs rolling skyward and my shoulders slumping in exhausted exasperation. I am becoming more of the opinion that these audits are a waste of time and resources. Those advocating the form filling will say that we need a baseline figure for each business from where we can improve year on year. They will argue that farming needs to prove its carbon status to secure markets and assure customers that their food is heading to carbon neutral. However, I would argue that this process isn’t really helping our climate or our farmers. We’ve ended up with various carbon calculators that will each give you a different answer and scientists are still arguing over data surrounding sequestration and emissions on which these calculators are modelled. Farm consultants seem to be swamped with these audits with little capacity to do much else. I suspect by the time the whole industry is audited and the figures collated in an accurate and trustworthy format we will be five to ten years down the line but with very little progress in reducing our emissions.

As an industry we must also be aware that these audits are being mostly driven by politicians and those higher up the supply chain. The pressure to complete these audits are coming from governments, supermarkets and processors keen to prove their environmental credentials to their voters, customer and shareholders. Cynically I also think that farmers won’t be rewarded for reducing carbon rather penalised for not. Be assured that the cost for carbon neutrality won’t be borne by those that we supply.

Even once we have completed a farm audit what do we do next to reduce our carbon footprint? Tinkering at the edges isn’t going to do much.

What I’d prefer to see is time and energy spent on big, practical solutions that will solve agriculture’s carbon emissions. Audacious solutions such as gene editing crops to have the ability to fix nitrogen or massive upgrades to the national grid (and related planning consents) to allow farms to become self-sufficient in renewable energy and even produce green hydrogen on farm. This is where we will see tangible results for the environment and farming. We need ambitious solutions, not more form filling and talking.

We’ve had an interesting month. Various readers of Agrimart have turned up in NZ over the last few weeks. This is disconcerting for a variety of reasons. I’ve always thought sharing stuff from the south of the south to fellow farmers in the far north of the north was like sending messages to space. Having real life people turn up in the south of the south who actually read Agrimart articles is like an “oh bugger” moment. We’ve had a few of those as apparently almost everyone who lives in the north of the north has spent the last few weeks in the south of the south. Quite a few of them seem to live in castles. I’m not sure if this is a prerequisite for Agrimart but if it is I’ll have to lift my game. A pretty cool couple, who I think live in a castle and were brave enough to come and stay, said to me, as I was trying to unblock a feed mill that feeds our dairy shed, that my articles should highlight such cock ups... I can do that.

The Wee Fella, who now runs our dairy farm, has had a bit of staff churn. A young chap he’d recently employed went on a bit of a bender last Saturday night and decided to burn his/our house down. The Boss and I were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary when the Wee Fella called to say there was a problem. I got down to the dairy farm to find 6 fire engines watching what was left of the house burn to the ground. The next day security camera footage clearly identified the gobshite setting the house on fire. He was arrested and for his own safety is being held in custody. The Wee Fella tells me he had to get specialist legal employment advice as to how to terminate the gobshite’s employment. Apparently, arson and theft are not sufficient reasons to sack someone who has worked for you for only 2 weeks. The advice cost $1k, the arson will cost us $500k, and we still have to pay his wages.

Even by north of the north standards this is a pretty impressive cock up.
