ANNUAL REPORT | 2022-2023

As I write this letter, girls are returning to campus for the 2023-2024 school year. Some of these girls are new to us and eager to begin their Agnes Irwin education. Others are more seasoned, especially our seniors, who start the year with bold optimism, determined to strive for excellence while cherishing these days and making memories with friends.

Each of these students is a gift, and just as I am grateful for them, with their boundless spirit, intellectual curiosity, and compassion, I am thankful for each of you and every philanthropic gift listed on the pages of this report.

While our campus is filled with beautiful spaces for quiet study, collaborative work, exuberant cheering, inspired art, and meaningful teaching, it is not the buildings but the individuals of this community that define an Agnes Irwin School education. This publication bears witness to that, with lists of alumnae, parents, parents of alumnae, and employees inspired to give by their connection to this special school and its extraordinary people. Together, you make it possible for us to provide the necessary resources to support students’ wellness of body and mind—essential to the academic journey and lifelong fulfillment—through excellent academic, athletic and art facilities, curriculum, and faculty training. With more than 610 students on campus this fall, I have been reflecting on your generous support that enables us to enter our 154th year focused on empowering each girl to learn, to lead, and to live a legacy.

Thank you for your generosity,

A MESSAGE FROM | SALLY KEIDEL

“Seeing the immediate impact of an Agnes

Irwin education on our daughter and her classmates is why we give. In addition to an excellent academic foundation, our daughter has grown in confidence socially and learned to try new things. Also, as a fifth-generation Irwin’s family, we are proud to support Agnes Irwin’s mission and traditions. We believe our support will, in part, help to ensure these values are available to young women for generations

to come.”

4 | Summary of Gifts

Agnes Irwin is a school built on excellence. For more than 153 years, our graduates have applied the lessons they learned at Agnes Irwin to effecting change in their communities and around the world. Our challenge now, as it has always been, is to sustain excellence for the legacy of its graduates and for the coming generations. We are charged with continuously growing our academic and extracurricular programs to meet the ever-changing demands of an increasingly global community. The Agnes Irwin Fund enables us to do so with the ability to hire talented faculty members, coaches and staff as well as offer superior programming on our beautiful campus. We have immense appreciation for each gift to The Agnes Irwin Fund.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GIVING TO | AIS

WHAT IS THE AGNES IRWIN FUND?

The Agnes Irwin Fund is the name of AIS’ largest annual fundraising effort which is commonly called The Annual Fund. It supports the overall budget of the school, enabling Agnes Irwin to provide the highest quality experience to our students. It helps provide enriching and empowering educational experiences beyond what tuition supports. A high level of community participation creates a shared commitment for the school to succeed in its mission.

Independent schools like Agnes Irwin cannot operate on tuition dollars alone. Committing to support The Agnes Irwin Fund has an immediate and direct impact on our girls’ academic journey. Programs like Robotics Club, the robust STEAM program, Civics Week, and the retention of exceptional faculty would simply not be possible without The Agnes Irwin Fund.

The gap in the operating budget exists at every independent school. It allows schools to keep tuition lower by thousands of dollars while securing competitive operations. By mitigating the cost of tuition, The Agnes Irwin Fund helps to keep AIS accessible to a broader population of families while still being able to recruit and retain top faculty with competitive salary and benefits packages. Unlike tuition payments, donations to The Agnes Irwin Fund are tax-deductible.

WHAT ARE OTHER WAYS I CAN SUPPORT AGNES IRWIN?

There are three additional ways to support excellence at Agnes Irwin:

Pennsylvania’s State Tax Credit Programs

The state of Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) Programs allow both individuals and businesses to redirect tax dollars to The Agnes Irwin School. When an approved individual or business contributes to AIS through either program, they receive tax credits up to 90% of their total contribution to the school. This year, Agnes Irwin raised over $1.6 million in EITC/OSTC funds which went directly to offsetting the financial aid budget and very meaningfully contributed to the school’s financial health.

The Agnes Irwin Endowment Fund

The Agnes Irwin School’s endowment provides critical long-term support for the school. Gifts to the endowment strengthen and reinforce the legacy of Agnes Irwin for generations to come.

Restricted Gifts

Restricted gifts are those with a donor-specified purpose. Whether it be the purchase of equipment, sponsoring a visiting scholar, or helping fund a scholarship, these gifts are earmarked for a specific purpose and are not a gift to The Agnes Irwin Fund.

Parents’ Association

Parents’ Association is dedicated to fostering positive school spirit, supporting AIS through fundraising activities and providing opportunities for community engagement. While gifts to the Parents’ Association are not counted toward a donor’s overall giving to Agnes Irwin in the Annual Report, they make a significant contribution to the school. Past donations to the Parents’ Association have paid for Faculty/Staff Appreciation Lunches, classroom upgrades, prom, and wireless sensors for science labs among many others.

ANNUAL FUND CLASS CAPTAINS

The role of the Annual Fund Class Captain is to be an advocate for the Agnes Irwin Annual Fund and to promote a better understanding and appreciation for The Annual Fund among current parents. Ultimately, our goal is that this greater awareness will lead to higher parent participation in the Annual Fund and foster a more philanthropic parent community.

Our Class Captains focus on having strong class participation in The Agnes Irwin Fund. They play the critical role of communicators with parents within their grade by way of emails, phone calls, and text messages. They also share social media related to The Agnes Irwin Fund, and are encouraged to attend phone-a-thons held throughout the year. These phone-a-thons have a party-like atmosphere with music, food and refreshments and are a great way to socialize with other Agnes Irwin parents while volunteering.

We are grateful to our Class Captains for all their hard work.

BUILDING OUR COMMUNITY OF | GIVING

What a year! Thank you to everyone who made Spirit Week of Giving and Alumnae Day of Giving huge successes.

ALUMNAE DAY OF GIVING

Thinking of the love that our committed alumnae share each year with Agnes Irwin and its current students, “Love it Forward” was the theme of our annual Alumnae Day of Giving on March 8. The ambitious goal was to reach 250 donors throughout the day. Every 25th donor received a custom Agnes Irwin wine tumbler. Mary McCarty ’05 was the winner of our Swag Bag Raffle. Our dedicated alumnae volunteers all over the country reached out to friends and family, helping us surpass our goal. We could not be more proud to share that the goal was met and far exceeded. Thank you to our donors from 65 classes and 32 states for helping us raise $108,927 from 345 donors. A special thank you to the Classes of 2009, 1964, and 2013 for having the highest participation.

SPIRIT WEEK OF GIVING

In November, we held our Spirit Week of Giving, a week-long giving challenge leading up to AIS/EA Day. Throughout the week, we rallied the community daily during carline and during our annual phone-a-thon, getting everyone excited about the prospect of beating last year’s results of $212,000 from 437 donors. Our goal was to reach 450 donors which was truly ambitious. We blew right past our goal with an astonishing number of 568 donors totaling $312,433.

Equally incredible was our Lower School and fifth grade families achieving 100% participation in the Annual Fund by the week’s end. All of the Lower School girls, 5th grade, and 9th grade (for highest participation in the Upper School) were treated to a hot cocoa party with Head of School, Sally Keidel. Thank you to all of our donors and to the 86 donors who commented on our Giving Page Wall, sharing with us why it is important to offer financial support to the school in order to continue AIS’ legacy of excellence. Words cannot express our excitement, gratitude, and pride.

2022-2023 FACULTY AND STAFF CAPTAINS FOR THE ANNUAL FUND

Similar to the role of parent Class Captains, our Faculty and Staff Captains work to encourage participation from all members of our administration, faculty, and staff in giving to The Agnes Irwin Fund. We are grateful for their abundant enthusiasm and commitment to ensuring not only that all members of our faculty and staff make their pledge of support to our Annual Fund, but also that they convey an understanding and appreciation for how our Annual Fund impacts the lives of both our girls and our faculty and staff every day. Thanks to Paul, Ann and Michele, we had an incredible 99% of our faculty and staff donate to The Agnes Irwin Fund.

AGNES IRWIN Q&A | THE GALLAGHER FAMILY

What attracted you to Agnes Irwin for your daughter, Bella?

Our desire to send Bella to an all-girls school is what first attracted us to Agnes Irwin. Having been a “lifer” at Springside School (now SCH), I understand first-hand the privilege and benefit of an all-girls education. We were ecstatic to find a school where Bella would have a similar opportunity to grow, explore, learn, and achieve excellence in a supportive and loving community.

Specifically, it is Agnes Irwin’s commitment to its Vision that “Every girl achieves her own boundless vision of success” that further attracted us to AIS for Bella. We still remember the days we visited AIS. Walking down the halls, we could see the love and pride the girls had for AIS. Smiles and laughter were endless. The girls’ confidence and engagement in and out of the classroom were remarkable.

What does Bella say is her favorite part of being at AIS?

Her friends. Her freedom. The unending school spirit. Bella loves the friends she has made at Agnes Irwin. Everyday she gets to go to school and learn with girls she loves and who love her. As a Middle Schooler, she appreciates the freedom she has each day. Whether it’s the freedom to determine how she will spend her AM/PM break or the freedom in the classroom to learn in different ways. It is this freedom that makes her feel independent and capable. But what makes AIS truly special, is the unending school spirit of the entire community. She revels in the spirit days, including AIS/EA day, May-Dieval Days, pep rallies and all the events when she can show off school spirit. She certainly wears her school spirit-wear with pride!

You are generous supporters of the school. What drives your philanthropy?

We like to invest in organizations that have a positive impact on the community. We look for organizations that have an appealing vision and mission and that execute successfully on that vision and mission. This is exactly what we see in Agnes Irwin.

Further, we support AIS because we believe in the tenets of the strategic plan, a “Boundless Vision of Success,” including its holistic approach to educating girls and investing in each girl’s individual path to success. AIS is truly committed to “empower each girl to learn, to lead, and to live a legacy.”

How would you describe the benefits of an Agnes Irwin education?

At AIS, our daughter’s education goes well beyond the classroom and academic excellence. AIS programs are thoughtfully created to support the whole girl in her path to success. With such programs, each girl has endless opportunities to find her voice and use it in the path she chooses. The girls begin to understand that there really is no one path to success and each girl’s journey looks different. AIS cultivates an environment of respect for one other. It starts with striving to understand each girl in their own right and committing to support the uniqueness and beauty of her as she discovers her own path.

More importantly, Agnes Irwin sets high standards, which is critical for future success in any endeavor. In the classroom, the girls and teachers work together in such creative ways. The teachers have this amazing way of challenging the girls in a nurturing, supportive, and cooperative environment, which ultimately promotes critical thinking and confidence.

“Agnes Irwin is where my imagination blossomed and I learned to love learning. The school set me off on an educational path that has continued to grow and serve me well. For all of the doors and windows that early AIS education has opened silently, but surely, I will be forever grateful.”

LETITIA ROBERTS ’60

Celebrating 50 Years

Each year, Agnes Irwin is excited to welcome back alumnae to celebrate their class reunions, but none quite compares to the 50th reunion class. This milestone brings classmates back on campus where they have the opportunity to reconnect with old friends, share stories, create new memories, explore a revitalized campus, and learn about the ways in which their alma mater has evolved over the years. Our very special 50th Reunion Class — the Class of 1973 — had the opportunity to attend multiple events celebrating their significant milestone. We were honored to host this special class of loyal, passionate, accomplished women and to help them celebrate together.

THE CLASS GIFT

The Class of 1973 chose to support Civic Engagement in the Upper School as their 50th Reunion Gift. As Reunion Chairs Marianne McClatchy, Cynthia (Cinch) D. Rugart and Averel Roberts Wilson wrote, “Civic Engagement has never been more important for young women as it is today. As female scholars of the 60s and 70s, we feel that raising a fund to support programming around civic engagement is not just important for today’s students, but it is essential in preparing them to enter the globallyminded community members and leaders. The fund will be a restricted fund that supports the Upper School’s Civics Week and complimentary programming.” Together, the Class of 1973 raised over $50,000 for this purpose and the Upper School is so grateful to be the beneficiary.

ALUMNAE RECOGNITION

One of the most celebrated moments of the weekend was when Sally Keidel honored Janine Stewart Baggett ’73 for her decades-long commitment

The Class of 1973

to Agnes Irwin that included two terms on the AIS Board of Trustees as well as serving on the search committee that named Penney Moss Head of School. Janine holds an important place in The Agnes Irwin School’s history as its first Black graduate. Moved to tears by the palpable positivity in the room, Janine began her remarks saying, “I was reluctant to accept this award, but I knew it was the right thing to do. The teachers at Agnes Irwin taught me and nurtured me with the same love and care as every other student.” Turning her gaze and attention to her 1973 classmates in the audience, she shared, “It was your acceptance, love, friendship, and kindness that allowed me to thrive and find my way. You just let me be me. Yes, there were times when I questioned what I was doing here and I felt like I was carrying the entire African American race on my back. But there was always someone who let me know that all I had to do was my best. While this award has been presented to me, it belongs to all of us.”

A special thank you to our 50th Reunion Chairs, Marianne McClatchy, Cinthia (Cinch) Rugart and Averel Roberts Wilson for their efforts leading the Class of 1973 though this wonderful milestone.

“Our 50th reunion was soul-filling! We connected with friends from all stages of our Irwin’s career — from those who had been classmates fleetingly in the Lower School to those who left for boarding school to those who graduated together in 1973. There’s a saying that, the older you are, the more important it is to connect with people who knew you when you were young. I think this was borne out for all of us who participated in our 50th. We were reminded of the great good luck (and hilarious stories and cautionary tales and favorite teachers) we shared in attending Irwin’s. We were reminded of just how lucky we are to have had Irwin’s, and each other, in our lives.”

20 | Celebrating 50 Years

ALUMNAE | LEADERSHIP

The commitment of Agnes Irwin alumnae who generously give to Agnes Irwin inspires all of us to consider making a gift that will support future generations of girls and young women.

We are extremely grateful to the alumnae who made a gift this past year to The Agnes Irwin Fund at the leadership level of $1,869 or higher.

The entire Lower School and our 5th grade parents reached 100% participation this year. We are grateful to our incredible parent community and Annual Fund Class Captains for their support and hard work throughout this past year.

The following lists include current parents who have made a contribution to The Agnes Irwin Fund and does not include gifts to the Parents’ Council which are recognized separately. Dollar counts do not reflect pledges or commitments beyond the current year.

LEADING THE WAY FOR GIRLS | AND GOLF

The Agnes Irwin School Proudly Launches Access Golf

In line with the school’s long-standing commitment to remain at the cutting edge of what is best for girls, Agnes Irwin is thrilled to announce the development of a new athletic initiative –Access Golf. It is through the generosity of our donors that this initiative was possible.

With Access Golf, Agnes Irwin will become the first all-girls school in the area to incorporate a golf simulator and golf skills training into its physical education program, putting us firmly at the forefront golf exposure and access for girls. Designed to make the game of golf more accessible to our girls, the program will provide learning opportunities to students in all divisions and all skill levels so that more AIS girls can experience the lifelong benefits of playing golf.

Women make up the fastest growing group of golfers, yet, three times as many women leave the game of golf while learning compared to men. Teaching golf at a young age builds the physical foundations of strength and balance will increase the presence of women in golf. The keystone of this program will be a state of the art golf simulator, the newest addition to our Athletic Center. The simulator will be powered by top of the line technology that can be utilized by first time and professional golfers alike.

Located in the Garden Level of our Athletic Center, the simulator will allow our girls to analyze their swings, strengthen their skills, and build confidence in their game.

“The Access Golf program is the perfect addition to Agnes Irwin’s already robust athletics and physical education programs, putting us at the forefront of girls’ physical education. Access Golf will give more girls the opportunity to play golf and to be introduced to the sport at a younger age. Golf is a lifelong sport that teaches resilience, critical thinking, integrity, and the value of hard work. I am thrilled more AIS girls will have the chance to learn this exceptional sport and experience the benefits of golf.”

GIRLS GRANT MAKING | THE AL PHILANTHROPY FUND

In 2004, Elizabeth R. Moran endowed the AL Philanthropy Fund in honor of her granddaughter Alyson Legnini ’04 to teach girls about philanthropy and the importance of making a difference in their community. The Agnes Irwin Girls Grant Making Club (GGM), which is supported by this endowed fund, teaches girls to be thoughtful, active, and responsible donors in the grants they award over the course of the school year. Organizations of the students’ choosing are invited to present and answer questions about their organization’s mission and plans for grant awards. This year, the students chose the following organizations as recipients of unrestricted grants to support their missions:

“I have loved being part of the Girls Grant Making Club (GGM). We learn about how philanthropy has the power to impact people’s lives in a very real and positive way. At our meetings, we hear from nonprofit organizations in the community about their needs, and then we as a group figure out how we can contribute to as many organizations as possible with the money we are charged with donating. On a personal note, my family’s good friend passed away a few years ago and Peter’s Place was a resource for his family. Hearing from the Director of Peter’s Place hit home and made me realize how money can help Peter’s Place support other families who are grieving. Before joining GGM, I did not realize how important philanthropy was. I am so glad that I do now so I can always find ways to give back to my community.”

“We choose to support Agnes Irwin in honor of our granddaughters because we believe in educating, empowering, and preparing girls to be future leaders in an increasingly complex and competitive world. Agnes Irwin is doing this well.”
NANCY AND ROBERT COCOZZA

The Laurel Society honors our alumnae who have established a planned giving arrangement with The Agnes Irwin School. Planned gifts include bequest intentions, charitable remainder trusts, gift annuities, pooled income funds, and other forms of deferred support. Since its inception in 1998, the Laurel Society has raised more than $13 million in contributions and given donors the opportunity to inspire generations of Agnes Irwin girls to come. Each year Agnes Irwin hosts Laurel Society events as a symbol of our gratitude.

For information on the Laurel Society, please contact Margaret Welsh, Director of Development, at mwelsh@agnesirwin.org.

“Giving to Agnes Irwin is important to me because my high school friends are priceless. Also, the academics and athletics at AIS prepared me for college. I couldn’t be prouder to be an Agnes Irwin alumna!”

SHANNON CASEY ZIMOLONG ’00

“The enthusiasm, energy, and care that our daughter’s teachers exhibited throughout her first year were unmatched. We give to Agnes Irwin to support and recognize the incredible staff, and to continue the tradition of excellence for years to come.”
