September is National Recovery Month

RECOVERY FOR EVERYONE, EVERY PERSON, EVERY FAMILY, EVERY COMMUNITY Held every September National Recovery Month is an observance to educate Americans in the treatment and mental health services available to those in need. Both mental health and/or substance abuse disorders can and do interfere in one living a healthy and purposeful life. It might be surprising that even in the middle and later years of living many are suffering from issues having to do with mental health and substance abuse…as many times one or both of these concerns are equated with teens and younger adults. The National Recovery Month theme for 2021 is “Recovery for Everyone, Every Person, Every Family, Every Community”. The idea behind this theme is that no one is alone, not the addict, those with mental health or dual diagnostic issues, or those who support them through recovery. Certain factors can increase the likelihood of developing an addiction: • Taking a highly addictive drug • Early use • Family history of addiction • Mental health disorders • Peer pressure • Lack of family involvement Even in middle age and moving forward into the later years these factors continue to play a major role in the ability to work towards recovery for addicts or those with dual diagnoses, ( mental health and addictive issue combined). Surprisingly drug abuse is not just a brain disorder referring to the abuse of illegal substances

Seniors entering recovery programs have greatly increased over the last 20 years leading to better statistics but more importantly, increased the chances of recovery as they reach out for help. In addition, providers of treatment have the opportunity to combine the concerns specific to the older adult, many of their chronic conditions, improving access to medical services, case management, and longer durations of care…leading to the ability to celebrate better results with the older patient in recovery. SAMHSA provides a national hotline free of charge, 24 hours a day, for those who need help: 1-800-6624357. This is a great time to celebrate your recovery or to begin! Jodi H. Underhill MEd. but legal ones as well. Alcohol and prescription drugs rank as the highest numbers of senior addicts in the U.S. While recovery is certainly possible for the aging population accidents and general health among a great deal of the adults over 65 can coincide with a possible longer recovery period. Likely to experience more physical and mental disorder issues…in addition to increased accidents through falls and vehicle injuries strong medications can impair judgment, coordination, and reaction time leading to even more complications for recovery.
