Welcome to Summer 2022! The rising temperatures are sure to make us feel as though we are in the Desert… Well, to our surprise this month we are taking a trip to the desert. Amanda Vallone with Roseborough travel is taking us on an adventure overseas as she shares her experiences riding camels and seeing beautiful monuments, pyramids, and scenery. This adventure she shares is just the start of what is to come this summer and we can’t wait to learn more.

Embarking on the adventure of summer we are spending more time outside and with our loved ones, it also can increase our awareness of what he or she may be experiencing including the need for additional support, reminders, memory loss, and even focus. June is as we know from our last year’s edition Alzheimer’s and Brain Health Awareness Month. Our writer Beth provides us with education on different ways to as caregivers ensure we do not end up with caregiver burn out. After all we do not want to end up in a scenario where our loved ones cannot be cared for because we are tired. We need to know when to say when…

Beth assists in elaborating on community resources such as partnering with community resources such as Adult Day Care and Respite Caregiving Services as means to have that time that as caregivers we need; this will ensure we are strong and remain able to be there for our loved ones throughout the journey.

This especially hits home and can be a blend of emotions. When we are surrounded by holidays such as Mother’s Day which we celebrated in the Month of May as well as Father’s Day which we are celebrating in the Month of June we find these sometimes-hidden emotions that tend to pop out around these days. Watching a caregiver for many years and being a caregiver, I know helping our loved ones is true dedication and love it is a roller coaster of experiences whether it be the good, the bad, the ugly or unfortunately the unspoken reality of some of our scenarios. We still do it not because we have to but because we want to.

Join us this month as we navigate through experiences, education, and emotion… We take a moment to honor our father’s all of our father’s whether present physically or spiritually. Whether blood or chosen we take this time to honor you and wish you the best Father’s Day with your loved ones.

Social Security scams are widespread across the United States. Scammers use sophisticated tactics to deceive you into providing sensitive information or money. They target everyone – especially the elderly – and their tactics continue to evolve.

FASTER PROCESSING OF DISABILITY CLAIMS FOR PEOPLE WITH ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE Currently, more than five million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. Since the onset of Alzheimer’s can occur in people before they retire, it may strike during an individual’s working years, preventing gainful employment as the disease progresses.

As a result, people with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers must figure out how they’ll pay for care. Our benefits and services are vital to people with earlyonset Alzheimer’s who are unable to work and have no other source of income.

For more than a decade, Social Security has included early-onset Alzheimer’s disease in our list of Compassionate Allowances program. The program identifies debilitating diseases and medical conditions so severe they meet our disability standards. Compassionate Allowances allow for faster processing of disability claims for individuals with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and several other neurodegenerative disorders.

DIAGNOSED WITH DEMENTIA? WHAT YOU NEED TO DO NOW. If you or a loved one has Alzheimer’s disease or any other form of dementia, it is important to start planning immediately. There are several essential documents that you must create before you stop thinking clearly.

Most folks who are in the early to mid-stage of dementia or Alzheimer’s think clearly enough to make planning decisions. If the person signing documents can understand the purpose of what is being signed, then it is acceptable for them to do so. Even if the person’s mental clarity comes and goes, they can sign planning documents, as long as they have clarity at the time of signing.

The following are essential documents for someone diagnosed with dementia: • Durable Financial Power of Attorney. A durable financial power of attorney (“DFPOA”) is the most important estate planning document for someone with dementia. One’s DFPOA appoints someone of your choosing to make financial decisions on your behalf. Without a power of attorney, your family might be unable to pay your bills, among other things.

• Health Care Power of Attorney. A health care power of attorney, a/k/a, the health care proxy, allows you to appoint someone to make medical decisions for you when you cannot do so.

• Living Will. A living will, a/k/a, an “advance directive,” describes your end-of-life preferences about removal or use of life support when you are on your death bed with no recovery possible.

• HIPAA Release. Finally, you should have a HIPAA release that lists all people that are allowed to discuss your health with your doctors, hospitals, etc.

It is also important to create a Last Will & Testament and/or a Trust to ensure that your loved ones receive your assets; protect your assets from long-term care, and avoid probate after you die.

CONNECT HOMEOWNERS TO PANDEMIC RELIEF The Secretaries of Housing and Urban Development Marcia L. Fudge, Veterans Affairs Denis McDonough, Agriculture Tom Vilsack and Treasury Janet L. Yellen are calling on servicers of federally backed mortgages to make every effort to ensure no individual or family unduly experiences unnecessary hardship or foreclosure while assistance is available under the Homeowner Assistance Fund.

The pandemic’s economic and public health impacts put millions of homeowners at risk of losing their homes. For this reason, President Biden’s American Rescue Plan established HAF to provide close to $10 billion in financial support to help families weather these challenges and remain in their homes.

We are strongly urging all servicers of federally backed mortgages to pause foreclosure proceedings when they are notified by a HAF program administrator of a pending HAF application to avoid unnecessary harm to vulnerable homeowners. Pausing any pending proceedings is a vital step towards keeping families in their homes as they receive assistance through the HAF program and is consistent with Congress’s intent in putting in place the HAF program to protect vulnerable homeowners.

During any such pause we encourage homeowners and servicers to continue working together on loss mitigation options to ensure vulnerable homeowners eligible for assistance are able to choose the best path to staying in their homes and fully utilize available resources. We also strongly encourage servicers to offer these loss mitigation options to borrowers who are struggling to make their mortgage payments including those who are eligible for HAF funding.

Treasury urges HAF program administrators to take steps to ensure their programs expedite handling of applications from homeowners with pending foreclosure proceedings, including determining the homeowner’s eligibility for HAF

and in all communications with the servicer regarding the homeowner’s application. Treasury also encourages HAF programs to develop expedited procedures for handling homeowners with immediate threats to housing stability and to support homeowners who may benefit from the agencies’ loss mitigation options. This support can include providing homeowners with access to housing counseling agencies approved by HUD or a Tribal government as well as legal services. Additionally, Treasury has encouraged collaboration between HAF programs and its servicers to develop infrastructure to support timely and accurate communication about programs and between servicers.

In addition to urging servicers to make HAF funding available to homeowners, our departments have taken a number of actions to ensure homeowners have the support needed to recover as seen in the resources listed below.

We will continue to explore updates to our loss mitigation home retention options for servicers to utilize as part of an administration-wide approach to help families who are behind on housing payments due to the economic impacts of the pandemic.

FILLING AN INCREASING NEED: CARING FOR THOSE WITH DEMENTIA Dementia usually starts with occasional instances of being forgetful, but over time, it progresses to cognitive decline; times when certain daily routines become more challenging. Dementia has many faces. The one common denominator is that is most always creates and increasing need for care from a family member or other caregiver.

• In the past five years, more than 40 million family caregivers provided 37 billion hours of care for loved ones. The value of this care is estimated at $470 billion.

• At least 20% of adult children are taking care of an older parent.

• About 85% of family caregivers in the U.S. do not receive any respite care.

Caregiver support is another valuable component to helping families who have a loved one living with dementia.

Providing support and resources, as well as a listening ear to those charged with care is incredibly invaluable during this time of need.

“Finding support and maintaining your own health are key to maintaining one’s role as a caregiver. It’s not wrong or selfish for a caregiver to take advantage of a day program for their loved one so they can take the time to care for themselves. If caregivers are burdened by the daily grind of caregiving, their patience and compassion will wear thin, and they will have a difficult time connecting with those for who they are caring,” says Macey Walker, Adult Day Services Manager for Senior Friendship Centers in Sarasota.

It is important to recognize the changes in cognitive capabilities in our loved ones and to realize that it is common in older ages. In fact, one in three people will have some form of dementia in their life. It is imperative to dispel the stigma that there is anything ‘wrong’ with these changes.

Compassion is key as a caregiver. By focusing on the gifts that remain, we honor and respect the individual. In doing this, we help support our loved ones throughout the journey of aging.

Q&A: WHEN YOU SUSPECT A STROKE, REMEMBER “B.E. F.A.S.T.” Strokes happen suddenly and often without warning. Knowing the signs and symptoms, and what to do once you recognize them, can literally save lives. Dr. Alkesh Brahmbhatt, director of the NeuroScience System Emergency Department at AdventHealth, shares his insights on the signs and symptoms of stroke and how important it is to get to the emergency room (ER).

Question: What signs and symptoms of stroke signal that you need to go to the ER?

Dr. Brahmbhatt: Whether it’s happening to you or to someone you love, there’s a simple phrase to remember when making a potential stroke diagnosis: B.E. F.A.S.T. Knowing this phrase and the importance of each letter can be the difference between life and death.

B.E. F.A.S.T. Stands for Balance, Eyes, Face, Arms, Speech, and Time. Have you lost balance? Are your eyes clear? Quick checks of these two items could indicate a potential stroke, in which case you should call 911 or go to the ER immediately.

Dr. Brahmbhatt: The ER has to be the first place patients who think they are having a stroke need to go. If you’re having a heart attack, you don’t have time to go to your primary physician. You go to the ER so we can use our lifesaving techniques.

Same thing with stroke. As soon as you feel you are experiencing the signs and symptoms of stroke, go to the ER or call an ambulance to take you to the ER. The paramedics can start the protocol and alert the ER that you are coming in with slurred speech, dizziness, and other subtle signs and symptoms.

Once we make those determinations based on the F.A.S.T. exam, we can continue with a stroke protocol.

One of the easiest methods for identifying a stroke is known as a F.A.S.T. exam:

Dr. Brahmbhatt: As soon as we know a stroke is a high probability, an immediate protocol known as Code Stroke goes into effect. The patient is immediately wheeled to a team that’s ready to go with nurses on each side with IVs, doing assessments for signs of stroke. A neurologist will be there on camera observing everything to determine if there is an indication for a stroke treatment right there at the bedside. You can expect an expedited process for stroke because every second or minute of delay could advance that stroke to the point where the patient will be debilitated.

This month, we celebrate Father's Day. There are many prominent images of fatherhood in the media. From the 1950's dad for whom parenting was more of a passive activity to the manly dad who fixes cars and takes his son fishing. Undoubtedly, those dads represent some of the population, but fatherhood is a rich tapestry woven with dads of every kind.

Memories of a Father

Loving Your Dad Through All of the Stages of His Life I asked a few friends to share stories about their dads in honor of Father's Day, and I was struck by the things we remember about our dads. Sounds, smells, and sights imprint on our minds. Memories of our fathers keep them alive in us even once they're already gone.

"When asked about my dad, I always take a moment before answering. The moment of silence brings me back emotionally to a time that I can never recreate. The priceless memories of smiles and joy can never be duplicated but always remembered and relived through my photographic memories. My dad was what I view as an Iconic Hero. At least to me. There was never an obstacle too big to overcome, he always was there for our family, ready to go for a Friday night on the town, and by on the town, I mean football games and family dinners, then Saturday boat rides.

Whether it was my first day of school, rides to the local deli, award ceremonies, or sports games, he was always there, ready for anything.

One could say I was lucky to have these times, but to me, it was my world. He was my best friend and my whole world for much of my life and still, to this day, remains with me. In a silent moment, I can smell his cologne as he walked by every day with the same signature smells and feel his presence through every lighthouse Image I see. I know that even though I was his "Daddy's Girl" and "apple of his eye," his legend will forever live within me."

Meg's Story "For a period of time, my father was a stayat-home dad. It was the mid-80s, so it was rare, but from hearing his memory of that time, it was perhaps the most cherished day job of his lifetime. I have vague memories of lying in the hammock in the yard, singing nursery rhymes.

Occasionally throughout my life, a melody would worm its way out of my memory and into my ear, replaying the soundtrack of my earliest days.

In my adolescence, I recall my dad doing things around the house, whistling tunes from his own childhood favorite, Mary Poppins. Later, I'd be washing the dishes in my first apartment and find myself whittling away, singing to myself, "Life is like a holiday with Marryyy…."

When I decided in my mid-twenties that I was going to move across the country to be with a boy I had fallen for in college, my dad said to me, "Baby, I would walk a thousand miles to get to your mother if I had to. Do what you have to do."

When I ended up marrying that same young man a few years later, I walked down the aisle to the lyrics, "I would walk 500 miles, and I would walk 500 more…" by The Proclaimers, a subtle nod to the confidence he gave me to take that bold step, no matter how heartbreaking it must have been for him.

"I couldn't end without including some memories of my father. My dad is an adventurer. Always looking for the next thing to learn or place to fall in love with. He's been wealthy, and he's been poor, he's had very traditional jobs, and yet to this day, he drives a tour Jeep in the Arizona desert.

I've thought a lot about my dad in preparation for this article, and adventure is the word that sums up my perception of him.

Adrienne's Story

Growing up, we spent summers visiting family in Ocean City, Maryland.

Our extended family would rent out adjoining apartments steps from the sand, and we'd stuff what felt like dozens of people into close quarters for a week or so. We'd spend all day on the beach, building sandcastles, and waiting for the tune of the ice cream truck to ring in the distance. I can still envision my dad coming out of the surf, golden brown tan, tired from body surfing in the waves.

My father once told me that the best thing a parent can do is just step back and let their children be themselves. Of course, that is easier said than done, but everything is a little easier when you set it to music."

My dad is exciting, playful, and an easy conversationalist. He's a great party guest, full of adventure stories and random facts picked up along the way. But what I appreciate most about him is his lack of judgment. He accepts people for who they are, me included. Reflecting back, I wonder if his lack of judgment comes from wanting to be able to live life on his terms. Judge not lest ye be judged, kind of thing. The long-term plan is for my dad to move back to Florida from Arizona, and I look forward to seeing what his next big adventure will hold. I have a sneaking suspicion the grandkids will be learning how to body surf."

The relationships we have with our parents are everevolving. As young children, we depend on them for safety.

They are our teachers and our best friends. Then, as we grow, we naturally desire space from our parents and fight to carve out our own identities in the world. If we're lucky, only to return to a new parent-child relationship that feels more like friendship than dependency. For some, their relationships will continue to evolve into an inverse version of childhood where their parents become the dependents.

The older our parents get, the more memories we store away of them. Memories are a snapshot of a moment in time. They capture versions of the people we love, and it's only when we begin to stack those memories together that an image of their full humanity comes into focus. This becomes even more real as our parents age, and the dads who used to pick us up and swing us around don't have the strength they used to. Eventually, the memories of our fathers include seeing them at their most vulnerable.

VFW AUXILIARY

VFW AUXILIARY MEMBER RECOGNIZED FOR OUTSTANDING WORK Anna Ellingsworth's selfless acts of kindness, caring and patriotism are commendable.

We are proud to call her our sister and friend.

Anna Ellingsworth, what an amazing woman! She has been a VFW Auxiliary member and volunteer since 1980, joining in Minnesota and later moving to Ormond Beach, Florida and transferring her membership to Daytona Post 1590.

She married her sweetheart, Malyn Ellingsworth, an Army Sargent, who opened Anna’s world as they traveled from state to state and country to country, while Malyn served his country. Anna became a widow while she was still young and had to find a career to raise her young son. She found her calling as a schoolteacher and so her journey begins. Anna loved teaching, especially because she could combine her love of Americanism and teach patriotism throughout her career in the school system. She organized five schools in her local area spreading the word about our National writing and drawing contests, promoting the Scholarships and Youth Activities programs. Anna also has a passion for our Hospital Program. She has been a volunteer in the program for almost 20 years committing to over 4,000 hours of care to our veterans by giving of herself. She has delivered sandwiches, coffee, listened to their stories and always leaves them with a smile on their face.

Anna is still a very active member of her Auxiliary. Currently she is working with children at local schools, helping them create Valentine cards and gifts. She continues to promote Americanism and patriotism education about the American Flag. In our “Flag Folding Ceremony” she explains the 13 folds and continues her work by going to the VA Clinic and helping serve our veterans.

Anna has served in many positions over the course of her volunteerism. She has served as Auxiliary President, Sr. Vice President, Treasurer and in several Officer positions at the District level. She is currently serving as the Auxiliary Chaplain at her local VFW Auxiliary to Post 1590.

From Camel Rides and Pyramids to The Mighty Nile River

GROUP TRAVEL IN EGYPT

Known for its ancient treasures and rich history, Egypt is on the “bucket List” or “live-it list” for most travelers. In April, I spent three weeks with a lovely group from Central Florida in Jordan and Egypt to cross it off their lists. And to say this trip was a trip of a lifetime would be an understatement.

Whenever we go on a group trip, the adventure starts on the ride to the airport—we get a coach from Roseborough Travel Agency, get dropped off at the airport, and fly to our destination all together. This is nice for those who aren’t quite as comfortable traveling alone these days. Bonus: You don’t have to park at the airport.

Our group flew into Jordan first to see the pink city of Petra, swim in the Dead Sea, and visit the desert landscapes of Wadi Rum, biblical towns of Mt. Nebo, and historic areas like the Citadel. We saw so many amazing sights and this was all just in the first few days of the trip.

As we made our way into Cairo, the reality of the ancient wonders we were about to encounter sunk in. We started with a visit to the Egyptian Museum of Cairo to see the mummies, artifacts, and King Tut collection. Some of our group members had seen the collection when it was in Chicago in the 70’s, and that was what spurred their interest and true desire to go on this trip nearly 50 years later.

Highlight of Our Trip: A camel ride in front of the Great Pyramids of Giza. To say this was one of the best experiences of my life is an understatement. At the end of the trip, most of the group still chose this as their best experience along the whole journey.

Along our 7-night cruise journey on the Nile, we saw the Temple of Horus, Karnak Temple, Temple of Hathor, and the temple of Kom Ombo. My whole group of Roseborough Explorers took a day trip to Abu Simbel- a 3000+ year old World Heritage Site that is dedicated to Ramesses II and his wife, Queen Nefertari. The magnitude of these temples was incredible. One after the next was more intricate, had deeper meaning, and matured in their paintings, hieroglyphics, and in portraying the story of the land, lives, and pharaohs of the time.

We also visited the Alabaster Mosque, a papyrus making museum and shop, and a Nubian village to see how the people of the destination live and experienced the local culture.

This trip, in a word, was mind-blowing.

There are many ways to travel to and through a destination, but I would certainly recommend a river cruise along the Nile. But with so many moving parts, having a travel advisor like myself, as well as a reputable company behind your trip, will help make your adventure as seamless as possible.

HOW TO PLAY SUDOKU The goal of Sudoku is to fill in a 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, row, and 3x3 section contain the numbers between 1 to 9.

At the beginning of the game, the 9x9 grid will have some of the squares filled in. Your job is to use logic to fill in the missing digits and complete the grid. CHICKEN FRIED STEAK WITH GRAVY YIELDS: 6 SERVINGS | PREP TIME: 25 MINS | COOK TEAM: 20 MINS

DIRECTIONS 1. For the steak: Begin with setting up an assembly line of dishes.

Mix the milk with the eggs in one; the flour mixed with the seasoned salt, 1 1/2 teaspoons black pepper, paprika and cayenne in another; and the meat in a third. Then have one clean plate at the end to receive the breaded meat.

2. Work with one piece of meat at a time. Sprinkle both sides with kosher salt and black pepper, then place it in the flour mixture.

Turn to coat. Place the meat into the milk/egg mixture, turning to coat. Finally, place it back in the flour and turn to coat (dry mixture/wet mixture/dry mixture). Place the breaded meat on the clean plate, then repeat with the remaining meat.

3. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the butter.

Drop in a few sprinkles of flour to make sure it's sufficiently hot.

When the butter sizzles immediately, you know it's ready. (It should not brown right away, if it does, the fire is too hot.) Cook the meat, 3 pieces at a time, until the edges start to look golden brown, about 2 minutes each side. Remove the meat to a paper towel-lined plate and keep them warm by covering lightly with another plate or a sheet of foil. Repeat until all the meat is cooked.

4. After all the meat is fried, pour off the grease into a heatproof bowl. Without cleaning the skillet, return it to the stove over medium-low heat. Add 1/4 cup of the grease back to the skillet and allow it to heat up.

5. For the gravy: When the grease is hot, sprinkle the flour evenly over the grease. Using a whisk, mix the flour with the grease, creating a golden-brown paste. Add more flour if it looks overly greasy; add a little more grease if it becomes too pasty/clumpy.

Keep cooking until the roux reaches a deep golden brown color.

6. Pour in the milk, whisking constantly. Add the seasoned salt and black pepper to taste and cook, whisking, until the gravy is smooth and thick, 5 to 10 minutes. Be prepared to add more milk if it becomes overly thick.
