FOUNDERS/OWNERS Priscilla & Bruce Kincaid CO-FOUNDER Janet Dixon MANAGING EDITOR Priscilla Kincaid, RN, BSN, MBA

Our First Annual Fall Festival premiers this month and we are beyond excited to host it for our community. This last year has provided many challenges and we are taking caution as we prepare to welcome you to the event. Connecting Seniors with Senior Services is our theme and what better time to connect them now. For the last year it has been a challenge for all to seek and receive assistance. Whether it may be assistance in finding senior living options, caregiving needs or even just simple answers we have not been readily available as a community due to many obstacles that have come along with the challenges, we have all endured. Be sure to review our event layout and bring it with you to navigate through as we partner with Gateway Center for the Arts to provide a spacious safe way to meet with our sponsors, local vendors, and services. In addition to our First Annual Fall Festival, it’s important to take time to reflect on ourselves, our relationships and our ability to grow younger! This month Adrienne relays that some say “40 is the new 30” well I love to hear that we age younger so here’s to taking on younger lifestyles and spicing up our lives! Relationships are not easy by any means but with all that we have endured and faced over the last year or more who doesn’t like a breath of fresh air, time to reflect and time to date our significant others. Whether you are together 1 year or 50 years remaining young in your relationship is healthy and let’s face it fun! Growing younger means we all can embark on new adventures, working on ourselves mentally, physically, and spiritually is a necessity. Knowledge is power and inspiration and I hope we inspire you to come be a part of our First Annual Fall Festival to meet your community and grow younger with us as we spice up life! From our family to yours,

Priscilla & Bruce Kincaid, Founders/Owners

VETERANS BENEFITS

NEW VA PRESUMPTIVE FOR SERVICE CONNECTION The Department of Veterans Affairs will begin processing disability claims on August 2 for asthma, rhinitis, and sinusitis on a presumptive basis based on presumed particulate matter exposures during military service in Southwest Asia and certain other areas — if these conditions manifested within 10 years of a qualifying period of military service. VA conducted the first iteration of a newly formed internal VA process to review scientific evidence to support rule making, resulting in the recommendation to consider the creation of new presumptions of service connection for respiratory conditions based on VA’s evaluation of a National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine report and other evidence. The process concluded that particulate matter pollution is associated with chronic asthma, rhinitis, and sinusitis for Veterans who served in the Southwest Asia theater of operations beginning August 2, 1990, to the present, or Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Syria, or Djibouti beginning September 19, 2001, to the present. VA’s review also concluded that there was sufficient evidence to presume that these Veterans have been exposed to particulate matter. The Southwest Asia Theater of operations refers to Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the neutral zone between Iraq and Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, the Gulf of Aden, the Gulf of Oman, the Persian Gulf, the Arabian Sea, the Red Sea and the airspace above these locations.

VA will conduct outreach to impacted Veterans and survivors to inform them about their eligibility and will provide information on how to apply. Veterans and survivors who believe they may be eligible for the newly established presumptive conditions are encouraged to apply. Veterans should contact their local Veteran Service Representative and file their claims. Raymond Allen Jr., U.S. Army SFC (RET.) LEGAL MATTERS

TOP 5 REASONS

WHY EVERY ADULT SHOULD HAVE AN ESTATE PLAN Many people think that estate plans are only for someone that has a lot of money. But that’s not true. Estate planning is for everyone, regardless of net worth.

1. AVOIDING PROBATE

Without a plan, your assets (aka “your stuff”) may be subject to delays and costly attorney fees. With a plan, you can avoid probate entirely, along with the delays and expenses that accompany it.

2. DYING WITHOUT A WILL

Without a plan, your assets pass to your family members (perhaps not the ones you would choose). With a plan, you decide who gets your assets, when they get them, and how they get them.

3. KEEPING ASSETS IN THE FAMILY

Without a plan, your child's inheritance may wind up with your in-law if your child passes away prematurely after receiving their inheritance. If your child faces divorce after receiving the inheritance, half of your assets could

go to the soon-to-be-x-in-law. With a plan, you can ensure that your assets will stay in your family.

4. BLENDED FAMILIES

Without a plan, children from different marriages may not be treated as you would wish. With a plan, you determine how much of your “stuff” goes to your current spouse when you die. And if the surviving spouse gets it all, your plan can prevent the surviving spouse from disinheriting your children.

5. LOSS OF CAPACITY

Without a plan, the courts will select the person to manage your financial affairs and healthcare. With a plan, you pick that person through a power of attorney and healthcare power of attorney (aka healthcare surrogate). HOW HEMP OIL CAN HELP YOU! Are you looking for less stress? Less pain? Better sleep? Maybe even to regulate blood sugar levels? Hemp oil could be your answer.

Before we tell you our recommendation, let’s take a look at a system in our bodies called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The ESC has two main types of receptors: CB1 and CB2. Activation of these receptors can affect: • Sleep Cycles and Energy • Addiction and Pain • Learning and Memory • Inflammation • Heart Health and More Did you know our bodies produce cannabinoids? It’s true! These cannabinoids bind to our receptors and taking an activated hemp oil product can show major improvements to our sleep, pain levels, anxiety, inflammation, arthritis, and blood flow. But not all hemp oil is created equal and most only absorb about 5-10% meaning your money is wasted. After all, what good is a product that you can’t absorb? With eight registered patents (four on inflammation alone) Gemini’s REMEDY stands out above all others,

using nanotechnology to produce a nanodroplet with the size of 10-15 nanometers, ensuring the highest degree of absorption possible (about 95%). Scientific studies show REMEDY can show a reduction in inflammation–four times greater than the generic hemp oil meaning you get the most benefit for your money. If those results aren’t impressive enough, Gemini stands behind REMEDY offering customers a 30-day moneyback guarantee. So, if you are suffering from poor sleep to chronic pain or from a multitude of other conditions that take your body away from homeostasis you owe it to yourself to give REMEDY a try. You really do have NOTHING to lose. FEEL THE DIFFERENCE WITH REMEDY! Gemini Health & Wellness Joe Hubbes Gemini Independent Distributor (386) 320-9688 www.geminiinfo.com/USA

WE MUSTACHE YOU A QUESTION ??

YOUR GUIDE TO

CONQUERING BAD CHOLESTEROL

It's easy to mistake cholesterol for a trendy health term. One day it's all anyone talks about until it eventually goes out of style again. However, it's much more important than that. Cholesterol is a naturally occurring molecule that your body uses to build cells and manufacture things like vitamins and essential hormones. However, when we eat high cholesterol foods, we run the risk of raising the overall cholesterol level in our bodies. In excess, cholesterol can be detrimental to your health.

There are two types of cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). HDL is a good kind of cholesterol and may protect against heart attack and stroke. On the other hand, LDL is the dangerous kind of cholesterol that builds up in your arteries and leads to a condition called atherosclerosis. You see, cholesterol is a waxy substance in your blood, and when it attaches itself to the inside of your arteries, it begins to build up until it's

so thick that your blood has very little space to squeeze through. These blocked arteries force your heart to work harder to distribute blood through your body. To control your cholesterol levels, you have to understand its origin. A diet high in saturated fats or trans fats increases your risk of high cholesterol. These fats are consumed most often in meat and dairy and processed foods, respectively. Other factors that increase bad cholesterol are alcohol consumption, smoking, obesity, and age. The good news is, you can address high cholesterol with some simple diet and lifestyle changes. If you're at all familiar with heart health, you won't be surprised by this information. A healthy diet and regular exercise are vital for preventing a variety of different cardiac conditions. And adopting these healthy habits can be fun! A heart-healthy diet includes lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and

Finally, let's talk movement. Exercise is incredible for conquering your cholesterol because it increases your good cholesterol, which enables your body to eliminate bad cholesterol. Don't feel pressured to work out at an extreme level. Exercise is whatever you want it to be. Walking around your neighborhood, working in your garden, and playing with your grandchildren are some of life's most fantastic forms of exercise. The only rule is that your heart rate rises, and your blood gets pumping. Whatever it takes to get you there is up to you! There are a lot of things that happen in our lives that are out of our control. But fortunately, we have some control over our diet and exercise habits related to our heart health. If you're concerned about your cholesterol, speak with your doctor. The sooner you are treated, the better. SO, YOU WANT TO SPICE UP YOUR LIFE? They say 40 is the new 30, and if my math is correct, that means we're all getting younger by the decade. A century ago, people considered 50 to be old age, but with advances in medicine and a shift in attitude, adults in their fifties are just getting started. One of the things our culture has typically reserved for younger people is sex. Yes, that's right, we're going there. Buckle up, and let's talk about the awkward thing that is on all of our minds.

We all know that sexual longing and the desire for intimacy don't end at a certain age. Even as our bodies shift and change, we can still find ways to integrate sexual pleasure into our lives. The first step in caring for your sexual health is acknowledging your desire. Don't give in to the idea that older people can't or shouldn't be sexually active. It's simply not true. If you have a partner, communicate openly with them about your desire. Intimacy like this strengthens relationships, instills confidence, and can light a fire between lovers. If you're not in a relationship, it's still important to acknowledge to yourself that you desire sexual intimacy. If you locked away your sexual desire for so long that it appears to have dissipated, it's still not too late. 14

Aging Times Magazine | September 2021

While your age and desire may not be a limiting factor in your sexuality, your physical health is. As with any physical activity, sex raises your heart rate, concerning adults with existing heart problems. Speak with your cardiologist if you have this concern. Adults who have arthritis or chronic illness may find sex uncomfortable or even painful. The solution is not to avoid sex altogether but to speak with your doctor about how you can either treat your symptoms or find safer ways to derive pleasure. Your physical well-being is essential to maintaining a healthy sex life. We must address the essential steps that come before sexual intimacy. We all know that attraction

is the basis of sexual desire. This was true when you were young and remains the case today. Think back to when you were younger, and you'd put on a new outfit, do your hair, and wear your best coy smile, all to catch the attention of someone you fancied. Do you remember how good that made you feel? Often, we make investments in our physical appearance to attract partners, but the truth is, investing in ourselves makes us feel attractive. When we feel good, we derive selfconfidence that radiates off of us. No one expects you to look like you did when you were twenty. But, after all of the years that you've put effort into serving the people around you, maybe now is a good time to do a little something for yourself. If you want to ramp up the sexual energy in your relationship or tap into your own desire, take some time to think about what would make you feel the most attractive. There are many levels of attraction. We are attracted to people physically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually. When we fill our lives with the things that light us up, we feel more fulfilled, attractive, and attracted. While physical attraction is not the only element in overall attraction, it's certainly part of it. When we think about taking care of our bodies, most people think first of a healthy diet and regular exercise. And the great news is, both of these positive habits are known to increase sexual drive. The things you're doing to feel attractive are also contributing to your sexual desire. On the other hand, the unhealthy habits that your doctor has warned you against - things like stress, smoking, and over-consuming alcohol - are factors that may

Our attitudes and desire for sexual intimacy don't dissolve as we age, but our bodies change in ways that make sex more complicated than it was in our youth. inhibit your sexual drive. If you haven't found the right motivation to care for your body, maybe this will be the thing that does it for you. Our attitudes and desire for sexual intimacy don't dissolve as we age, but our bodies change in ways that make sex more complicated than it was in our youth. As women age, estrogen levels drop, leading to vaginal dryness and less physical sexual arousal. Drops in estrogen may make sex undesirable and uncomfortable. If this sounds familiar to you, speak with

your doctor. There may be medications available to you. Plus, endless varieties of over-thecounter lubricants and creams will spice up your sex life and stand in where your body no longer creates proper lubrication. Men's hormones have their ways of creating problems for their sex lives. When men's testosterone hormone drops, it can become more challenging to achieve or maintain an erection. But this problem is easily solved thanks to modern medicine. Speak with your doctor about issues you're having reaching and maintaining an erection. There are medications available to help. There is no shame for anyone, man or woman, who chooses to invest in products to help you achieve sexual satisfaction. The real shame is not taking advantage of the resources available to you. But there's something else we should discuss. Once you've seen a doctor, regained your self-confidence, and are ready to hit the town, you must be prepared to protect yourself. Research shows that the rate of sexually transmitted infections in older adults is increasing. Yep, you heard that right. As we sit here and make an argument for why seniors should be having sex, it turns out you're doing it anyway. There is a real-life sexual revolution taking place in senior living communities all across the country. However, since older adults aren't at risk of unwanted pregnancy, you're not always taking the appropriate steps to protect yourself from unwanted infections. Sexually transmitted diseases are more than simple annoyances. Left undiagnosed and untreated, they can be detrimental to your health. These days, young people have access to so much information about sexual health and how to prevent the spread of disease. If you were born in the 1960s or earlier, you might not have had access to much information about sexual health in your youth. Before you enter into a sexual relationship with another adult, you should start by having yourself tested and ask that the other person get tested as well. And, even though you're not worried about preventing pregnancy, it's always a good idea to use prophylactics when having a continued on page 17

IT'S ABOUT LOVE

IT’S ABOUT LOVE AND DEVOTION...

A CAREGIVER’S STORY

The generations that came before us might have viewed relationships and marriage differently…or have they? Does unconditional love and marriage ‘until death do we part’ still exist? For Betsy and Matt Sloan, marriage most certainly meant an unwavering commitment. You see, Betsy’s husband, Matt was diagnosed with early-onset dementia at the age of 56. His mother also had Alzheimer’s disease. Betsy acted as a caregiver to both of them. For her, love took on a tremendously new level of commitment and dedication. Betsy was tireless in her efforts to help ease her husband’s stress when he suffered from hallucinations, paranoia and when he would become irritable or combative. She met his needs with love and dedication, and also remembered to have a sense of humor whenever possible.

Caregivers truly experience a different kind of love… one that transcends one of romance and frivolity and reminds us that to be selfless in a time of need will be one of the most profound gifts we can offer. What can be learned when you are a caregiver for a loved one with dementia-related illness? Betsy says that she came away with three lessons learned.

1. Practice Unconditional Love

For Betsy and Matt, marriage was a promise of unwavering commitment. She was there for her husband,

no matter what. Through doctor’s visits and caregiving responsibilities and all of the difficult times, she was a constant source of love and support for her husband.

2. Have Patience

Living with someone who has dementia can be an extremely trying experience. Betsy learned the importance of taking time for herself and remembering that self-care is not a luxury, it is really a necessity.

3. Go With the Flow

When some things cannot be controlled, it’s important to remember to just “go with the flow,” Betsy says. Remember that it’s not always about us, it’s about our loved ones. When we change our focus to meet them where they are, that is a powerful shift that allows us to use empathy and caring and tap into a whole new level of compassion and love. Caregivers truly experience a different kind of love… one that transcends one of romance and frivolity and reminds us that to be selfless in a time of need will be one of the most profound gifts we can offer. “Dementia cannot rob the heart of love,” Betsy says. I, for one, will have to agree. Beth Douglas is an experienced marketing communications professional who is passionate about promoting quality, compassionate senior healthcare. sexual encounter with a person for the first time. When you put safety first, you're less likely to find yourself in a doctor's office later. There's one final thing we need to address about sex and aging. There is no way to understate how much your emotional health impacts your sexual health. We've talked a lot about taking care of your body, but it's just as essential to take care of your mind and heart. Healthy eating and exercise help keep your body healthy; they also keep your mind healthy. We've all experienced how emotional issues like stress and depression can dull our desire. But healthy relationships can bolster your emotional health, making you feel energized and maybe even a little frisky. Whether or not you're planning your sexual revolution, you must take the time to care for your emotional health. We can't leave without mentioning one final thing. You don't need a partner to experience sexual gratification. Ancient art from Greek and Japanese cultures dating back tens of thousands of years makes references to personal devices. What may seem like a new and risqué phenomenon is anything but. If you're not in a relationship or don't care to be in a relationship, you can still reap all the benefits of an active sex life.

Yes, that's right, there are genuine health benefits to maintaining an active sex life. Researchers say that it may support your immune health, bladder control, and blood pressure. Plus, if you're having trouble feeling the desire for sexual intimacy, the act of engaging in sexual activity can increase your libido so that you desire it more. This article isn't meant to be an advertisement for sex. We have nothing to sell and nothing to gain. Instead, we hope this is an invitation and a rekindling for those senior adults who have been waiting to come back to themselves. There is no age limit to desire, and in reading this, we hope you feel empowered to pursue that which pleases you. So, to all of the sexual revolutionaries out there, we applaud you! You've worked hard and given yourself to others; now it's time to put yourself first. And for those of you who are waiting to dip your toes back into the desire pool. Come on in. The water's fine. HEALTHY LIVING FOR THE SOUL

HUMMINGBIRD HAPPINESS

In this senior time of my life, I have learned that life is too short and can change in an instant. When I find joy, I allow the moment to be filled with it, because the moment can be so fragile and fleeting like a hummingbird sighting. During a phone conversation with my adult daughter, she called out, “A hummingbird!” We both stopped talking, to enjoy the brief sighting a moment to appreciate the rare delight. Our minds need to be guarded. Quickly our thoughts can bring us down a rabbit hole of despair. Sadly, a moment can bring us down, like turning on the news or listening to someone who dwells on everything that is wrong in the world. I do want to be caring and concerned with friends, with whatever they are going through, but honestly I do not see the purpose in staying in the zone of despair. There is no joy there. Maybe I am a Pollyanna; perhaps that is my role in life. I prefer to create my day filled with light and uplifting thoughts, music, readings and gardening. These help me to be centered and healthy. I saw this meme: True self-care is not bath salts and chocolate cake; it’s making the choice to build a life you don’t need to escape from. I love embracing this stage of my life. It sure beats pining over the way it was or could have been. Why not embrace the here and now? My dear 100-year-old friend always had a daily plan of action but also a repeated phrase, for the future, kept her moving like a donkey follows a carrot. She started practicing chair yoga in her eighties to help her stay mobile. She also had an affirmation song that she sang on a daily basis, “I’m alive, alert awake, enthusiastic.” I try my best to remember and sing that song, it hasn’t always been easy. Life has its way of bringing us down through relationship issues, health challenges and the news channel. But if we can start each day determined to do our best and be our best at what ever age we are, then we stand a better chance of having control over what we can. What we put in our minds to think, the words we say, the programming we watch, the people we associate with and the food we put in our bodies, as well as the exercises we do all contribute to a happier, healthier state of well-being. Negative thinking has a tendency to overtake positive affirming thoughts and living. We must guard our thoughts for healthy living. Sometimes we may need to limit conversations with people if their speech and actions distract us from being and feeling our best. Or we may need to say no to activities that take zap our energy. 22

Aging Times Magazine | September 2021

We make choices day by day, moment by moment for our own health and well-being. We choose what we think, watch, hear, eat and how we move through our day. Wallow and wither or live and thrive. It’s our choice. Choose yourself. Choose life and joy for your own healthy living for your soul. Cheryl Floyd, Speaker/Storyteller and Heal your Life® Coach. September is National Recovery Month

RECOVERY FOR EVERYONE, EVERY PERSON, EVERY FAMILY, EVERY COMMUNITY Held every September National Recovery Month is an observance to educate Americans in the treatment and mental health services available to those in need. Both mental health and/or substance abuse disorders can and do interfere in one living a healthy and purposeful life. It might be surprising that even in the middle and later years of living many are suffering from issues having to do with mental health and substance abuse…as many times one or both of these concerns are equated with teens and younger adults. The National Recovery Month theme for 2021 is “Recovery for Everyone, Every Person, Every Family, Every Community”. The idea behind this theme is that no one is alone, not the addict, those with mental health or dual diagnostic issues, or those who support them through recovery. Certain factors can increase the likelihood of developing an addiction: • Taking a highly addictive drug • Early use • Family history of addiction • Mental health disorders • Peer pressure • Lack of family involvement Even in middle age and moving forward into the later years these factors continue to play a major role in the ability to work towards recovery for addicts or those with dual diagnoses, ( mental health and addictive issue combined). Surprisingly drug abuse is not just a brain disorder referring to the abuse of illegal substances

HOME CARE

Seniors entering recovery programs have greatly increased over the last 20 years leading to better statistics but more importantly, increased the chances of recovery as they reach out for help. In addition, providers of treatment have the opportunity to combine the concerns specific to the older adult, many of their chronic conditions, improving access to medical services, case management, and longer durations of care…leading to the ability to celebrate better results with the older patient in recovery. SAMHSA provides a national hotline free of charge, 24 hours a day, for those who need help: 1-800-6624357. This is a great time to celebrate your recovery or to begin! Jodi H. Underhill MEd. but legal ones as well. Alcohol and prescription drugs rank as the highest numbers of senior addicts in the U.S. While recovery is certainly possible for the aging population accidents and general health among a great deal of the adults over 65 can coincide with a possible longer recovery period. MENTAL HEALTH MOMENT

GETTING BETTER WITH AGE

We all know the basic tenants of living a healthy life. Eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, drink water, and get sleep. We’ll get into that in a minute, but first, there’s another factor of health that we need to discuss. Mental and emotional well-being is an essential element to a healthy life that becomes more critical than ever as we age. Research shows that aging adults are more likely to experience symptoms of depression and loneliness. There are some biological reasons for this, namely decreased levels of folate in the blood. But there are many more environmental factors in play. Aging adults often struggle with the changes in their bodies that limit their abilities. Perhaps you can’t exercise the way you once did or play with your grandchildren the way you’d like to. When we consider the emotional weight of aging, getting motivated to live a healthy lifestyle isn’t as simple as it sounds. Who, when dealing with a bout of sadness, wants to think about exercise or dieting? If we’re going to age healthily, we must first take care of our emotional and mental health. But what if we could kill two birds with one stone? Relationships are essential for all human beings. We evolved to live in communities, and when a community doesn’t come easy to us in the form of work colleagues and play dates, we must find a place to belong. Many senior citizens thrive in communities and build relationships over shared interests and values. Churches and community centers are great gathering hubs that often have built-in social activities and volunteer

opportunities. Things like this may help older adults feel purposeful and create relationships that bring joy. Local YMCAs and health clubs are havens for adults looking for exercise classes to help kickstart their journey toward a healthier lifestyle. If you can discover the healthy habits that you enjoy the most, you can find like-minded people to do them with you. Cooking classes, walking groups, golf club memberships, and dance lessons are just some of the fun and healthy ways that adults build community and take care of their physical health at the same time. Find the people in your community who are living the active lifestyle that you admire and join them. If you’re feeling down or lonely, speak with your doctor. There are plenty of resources available to help you feel like yourself again. Then, when you’re feeling better, you can shift your focus toward developing habits that will strengthen your mind and body. Take care of your mind today, so you’ll have the energy and drive to take care of your body for the rest of your life. Aging isn’t for the faint of heart. We don’t have to tell you that. But as challenging as it is, you’re tougher. With a robust support system and an eye on your emotional and physical health, the seniors of today are unstoppable. CAREGIVER CORNER

LESSONS LEARNED ON THE CAREGIVER RIVER My journey on the Caregiver River started in rough water and became increasingly more challenging until I was out of the raft altogether and almost completely submerged. As I reflect on the last seven years, I see the experience as a crystal-clear rite of passage. I was wholly unprepared when I started this adventure. I had no rafting skills, had not secured a guide, and had no real supplies. I was capable and resourceful. How hard could it be? It was hard. At one point early in the journey, I was hanging on to the raft, well not hanging on; I had one hand on the guiderope, feet dragging as the swift water rushed past and the boat bounced from boulder to boulder and over drops. I was about to lose my grip and somehow didn’t. I climbed back into the raft, and eventually, the waters calmed. I learned a few skills and began to navigate the river with more confidence. The river didn’t change. There were still rapids, rocks, twists, and turns. I knew waterfalls were on the horizon, but I knew that I would be okay.

A FEW LESSONS LEARNED DURING MY EXPEDITION ON THE CAREGIVER RIVER: Float With the Flow

This river had a destination, and I initially resisted the current. I paddled upstream and when I did move with the current, downed limbs and boulders often blocked my path. I eventually, stopped resisting the river’s flow and focused on navigating. I developed skills such as mindfulness and setting boundaries. I learned to read the water and prepare for the challenges ahead. I managed the swift water stress in healthier ways. Release your fear of the future and flow with the river from the present moment. The river offers a renewable source of energy that will sustain you on the journey.

Waterfalls Lead to Rainbows

The most challenging aspects of the caregiver river led to the greatest gifts. The gift may have been a lesson, a revelation, a new traveling companion, or a new perspective. Journaling helped me process caregiving’s complexities, emotions, fear, and confusion. 26

Aging Times Magazine | September 2021

Writing offered a release and reprieve from the swirling sensations. Let your thoughts and words flow like a raging river, a gentle stream, or a waterfall spilling and splashing onto the page. Within the words, you may find the reward.

Expeditions Require Stamina

In the early days of caregiving, I forged ahead with force and willpower. As I prioritized Dad’s health and safety, I neglected my own well-being until I felt like an empty shell with nothing left to give. When I made self-care a priority, I felt whole again and began to navigate the river with confidence. What replenishes your power? Develop a routine that prioritizes your well-being and includes your passions reimagined to fit within your new reality.

Flow From the Present Moment

In the beginning, I spent a lot of time ruminating about the past and worrying about the future. Through meditation and mindfulness, I cultivated awareness and learned to meet myself where I was. I leaned into the uncomfortable emotions rather than avoiding them and learned to embrace them with openness and curiosity. Whether you are in a raging river or a meandering creek, you will experience vitality when you tap into the source of the river’s power and grace. The gifts are found in the present moment.

Create a Sustainable Ecosystem

We float along on the Caregiver River and face struggles that share much in common, and yet, every journey is unique. Even more significant is that each family caregiver is unique, and we must each find a personal course to a meaningful journey. When I identified what sustained me and prioritized my well-being, I created an ecosystem that provided physical and emotional support and adapted to ever-changing circumstances and needs. Carve a New Path

The Caregiver iver was brimming with obstacles. I learned when to circumnavigate an obstruction and when to use an impediment to facilitate momentum. I learned to focus on the path I intended to take rather than the boulder blocking the way. Obstacles make us emotional. When we navigate the barriers while maintaining momentum, we also maintain our well-being. When an obstacle obstructs the flow, become the flow.

Respect the Riverbank

When I focused on the Caregiver River’s obstacles, I rarely looked up and therefore paid little attention to the riverbank boundaries. As I became more aware of how the terrain on either side shaped the river, I learned to set, reinforce and adjust limits. As we protect our boundaries from overflow and erosion, we recognize that the river may change course as a result of these modifications. Boundaries can be too flexible, too rigid, or just right. In nature, a river will widen, narrow, and adapt to the landscape and the flow. Let current conditions and the flow of emotions guide your boundaries.

Let Love Release the Anchor

Anger was an anchor dragging the river bottom, slowing progress and catching every obstacle below the surface.

Repeated attempts to release the anchor failed until I found Amor Fati, leaned into the anger, embraced it, and used it to learn and grow into my caregiving role. Love of fate led to loving the Caregiver River. Embrace the boulders, the wildness, the rapids, and the waterfalls and release the emotions that prevent you from flowing in harmony with the current.

The Next segment of the Journey

Dad passed away in December, six weeks after his 99th birthday. He had hoped to make it to 100, but it wasn’t meant to be. Dad lived life on his terms until the end. He spent his last full day painting and had his gin at 3 pm. The day that he left us, he made his bed, watched mass, and listened to his music station while we sat at his side. Over the years, I learned many lessons from Dad, who was, coincidentally or not, a teacher by profession. Dad continued to teach me valuable lessons as I struggled in my role to help him age in place with the dignity and grace that he demonstrated throughout his life. VACATION SPOTLIGHT

As we wave goodbye to the days of lockdown, we are focusing on a “new normal” in travel. But what does that mean? Several recent industry surveys report an increase in travel planning positively affecting our mental health. Travel is good for your health?! That’s all I need to hear—sign me up!

DO SOMETHING THAT IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH

TRAVEL

Now don’t get me wrong, I know we all stopped traveling for the health and safety of ourselves and our fellow humans, and that it was extremely important. But as a result, our mental health struggled a lot during quarantine. Surveys suggest that over 70% of our adult population feels better having something to look forward to—like a trip. Even if we’re planning travel two years from now, our brain gets that feel good surge when we have something fun to be excited for. Travel opens our minds. When we take ourselves outside of our comfortable box and travel somewhere new, our minds experience a sort of freedom. The brain is a muscle, and it needs a workout just like other muscles. Doing things like reading and crossword puzzles aren’t bad, but new experiences workout your brain muscle even better. When traveling you’ll be learning new things, following directions on new roads, navigating crowds, remembering your room number. And that’s just the beginning. When you visit a new country, you experience their foods and drinks, cultural experiences, beliefs, traditions, and their history. Shaking up our normal way of life, even just for a few days, is good for us. Not everyone is necessarily ready to travel the way they once did, but I can personally attest to the WANT, the NEED, to travel. Our office has been busier than we’ve ever been with future planning. Our Explorers want that trip to look forward to. Some have taken up new types of travel. Health and wellness lovers have been

booking stays at resorts with hiking, biking, and yoga retreats. Others have taken to the seeing the National Parks (road trips or independent adventures). And more than you could guess can’t wait to get back on a cruise ship. Those who aren’t quite ready to hop on a large oceangoing vessel are still getting on the water with U.S. or European River Cruises. Wherever you want to go–Go! However you want to get there–Do it. Travel! Start planning a trip now—it’s good for your health. Amanda Vallone is the co-owner of Roseborough Travel Agency in DeLand. SUDOKU

The goal of Sudoku is to fill in a 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, row, and 3x3 section contain the numbers between 1 to 9. At the beginning of the game, the 9x9 grid will have some of the squares filled in. Your job is to use logic to fill in the missing digits and complete the grid. Don’t forget, a move is incorrect if: • Any row contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9 • Any column contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9 • Any 3x3 grid contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9

SUDOKU TIPS

1

Sudoku is a fun puzzle game once you get the hang of it. At the same time, learning to play Sudoku can be a bit intimidating for beginners. So, if you are a complete beginner, here are a few Sudoku tips that you can use to improve your Sudoku skills.

HOW TO PLAY SUDOKU

Tip 1: Look for rows, columns of 3x3 sections that contain 5 or more numbers. Work through the remaining empty cells, trying the numbers that have not been used. In many cases, you will find numbers that can only be placed in one position considering the other numbers that are already in its row, column, and 3×3 grid. Tip 2: Break the grid up visually into 3 columns and 3 rows. Each large column will have 3, 3x3 grids and each row will have 3, 3x3 grids. Now, look for columns or grids that have 2 of the same number. Logically, there must be a 3rd copy of the same number in the only remaining 9-cell section. Look at each of the remaining 9 positions and see if you can find the location of the missing number.

FAMILY RECIPE FAVORITE FAMILY TRADITIONS

VEGETABLE BEEF SOUP WHO DOESN’T LOVE COMFORT FOOD IN FALL... Who doesn’t love comfort food in fall…Rhetorical question right, just think from the smells of pumpkin spice in the air to all the flavors that remind us long summer nights are almost in the past and the holiday season is quickly arriving. There is no better time than now to prepare for cooler weather, cinnamon pinecones and brooms and as always, the delightful smell of food in the oven! We may be a tad early in the months of September but who says we can’t prepare early eat some now and save some for later?! I say let’s do it! What better way to get in the spirit then to start with home cooked soup? Vegetable Beef soup to be exact. Make ahead in the crock pot or on demand follow our recipe or make it your own, we hope you enjoy some comfort and nutrition!

Ingredients

2 tablespoons olive oil 1 ½ pounds sirloin steak or beef stew meat, cut them into cubes 1 large onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 cup diced carrots 1 cup diced celery 1 pound potatoes cut how you like (cube, chunks, and with or without skin) 8 cups beef stock (to cut sodium you can also try bone broth or low sodium) 2 bay leaves 1 can diced tomatoes (with juice) 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon black pepper

Directions

1. In a large pot heat 1 tablespoon of the oil over medium-high heat. Add half the steak and cook, stir frequently to ensure the meat does not burn, cook just until brown. Remove the steak once browned. Then repeat with the remaining steak. 2. Reduce the heat to medium-low and add the remaining tablespoon of oil to the pot. Add the onion and cook, stirring to make sure the onion does not crisp and fry. Add the garlic, carrots, celery and potatoes, and continue cooking approximately another 3-4 minutes. 3. Once vegetables are cooked add in the remaining ingredients including your meat and stir together. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover pot, and simmer for at least 30 minutes or until the steak and vegetables are all tender. Low heat and longer simmers allow for the soup to combine and enrich all of your flavors. Eat once cooked or save for later, serve with a biscuit, corn bread or even croissant to give the bread a joyous flavor. This meal can be a great freezer meal to heat and eat whenever you are ready. We hope you enjoy!
