A Will needs to be drafted correctly to ensure there are no ambiguities or mistakes. Mistakes can be costly which can result in unnecessary inheritance tax, create family arguments and upset and can cause delays to the administration of estates after death. By getting proper legal advice, you’ll ensure your Will is specifically tailored to meet your requirements and wishes.

Protect your loved ones

Here at Franklins, we believe in the power of planning. While writing a Will may be the last thing on your mind, having one in place will ensure your assets protected in the eventuality of your death.

The Power of Planning

An Executor is appointed in the Will and they administer a deceased person’s estate. They are responsible for valuing the estate, paying inheritance tax, collecting in assets, selling or transferring property and distributing the estate in accordance with the terms of the Will.

What can I include within my Will?

To speak to a member of the team and receive a 10% discount off a Will or Lasting Power of Attorney, call 01908 660966 / 01604 828282 or email info@franklins-sols.co.uk quoting the discount code AGEUK10.

What is an Executor of a Will?

We spend our lives working to provide for ourselves and our loved ones. People often assume their possessions will simply pass automatically to their spouse or children after they are gone. However, the only certain way to ensure that your loved ones inherit what you intend is by making a Will. Here are some frequently asked questions we hear from clients.

As well as appointing Executors, you can appoint guardians for minor children, include funeral wishes and specify gifts for loved ones or charities. Depending on circumstances, Wills can be drafted to be as tax efficient as possible or protect vulnerable beneficiaries. Can my Will be challenged?

Yes. If you do not include certain categories of people (e.g. children, cohabitees, spouses or dependents), they could claim against your estate on your death. It is important to inform your legal advisor about any people that could challenge the Will so that they can advise on your options of mitigating any potential claim. When should I review my Will? Typically we’d recommend doing this every 3-5 years. It’s also a good idea to review your Will if your circumstances change. For example if you inherit, become grandparents, get divorced or a beneficiary has passed away. Why should I instruct a Solicitor to prepare my Will?

Welcome to the latest summer 2022 edition of Age UK Buckzine

All our participants were aged 50 and over and have long-term health conditions, so we take it gently and remembered to walk… usually. Over the weeks, the participants had gelled into a tight group, and we all got pleasure from the camaraderie of the group.

We were grateful for the support of Age UK Bucks volunteer Karen who turned up each week and sometimes joined in too. Walking football has become increasingly popular over the last few years and for good reason, aimed at adults over 50, walking football has social, mental and physical health benefits. Walking football can help people lose weight, prevent loneliness and positively affect overall mental and physical health. We were joined weekly by Jo and Joe when their journey into retirement saw them developing bad habits and becoming sluggish. Now they are regular attendees and are reaping the benefits of staying active. In Jo’s own words, “It’s made me feel young again. I’ve loved building new friendships and knowing that others are there”. Luckily for us, Jo has signed up as a befriending volunteer with Age UK Bucks and is looking forward to working with older people in her local community. Joe has pledged to sign up too when he gives up his work as a Town Clerk.

Buckzine 6 | Buc K zine www.ageukbucks.org.uk Walking Football

The first time John came along, his son, Freddy, brought him and sat by the pitch watching him play. As a parent who spent many hours taxiing and watching his son play football, this role reversal was entertaining. Since then, Freddy has gone off to the USA to play football and we enjoy hearing how he is getting on. The sessions are overseen by WWSET coach Simon, who had introduced a musical backing track to our games, which, along with the tea and chat afterwards, was much enjoyed by all. It is important for all of us to sit less and keep active. Having this weekly fixture in our diaries was good for our health and morale. You can still find Walking Football sessions near to you, look out for details of further local sessions in the near future. We would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone at WWSET Wycombe Wanderers Football Club for collaborating with us on this fantastic project, which has now taken off in leaps and bounds! We really helped get the ball rolling on this (excuse the pun), so much so that the club is now running sessions by themselves. Well done to everyone involved. #walkingfootball

Sessions occurred in conjunction with WWSeT (Wycombe Wanderers Sports & education Trust) and transitioned from Lane end Playing Fields, to Handy cross Leisure Centre.

in march this year, we saw the popular Walking Football season come to an end.

At our first indoor session, classes were well attended with several people who were already using the Leisure Centre popping in to see what we were doing. We were also delighted to be joined by the Mayor of High Wycombe, Councillor Andrea Baughan and local radio station Wycombe Sound.

S ummer 2022 | 7supporting older people since 1945 Thank you to all our knitters and crocheters who have worked so hard on the Big Knit project over the past year for Age uK Buckinghamshire. We can confirm that 6,193 knitted hats were sent off to innocent Smoothies recently. if you missed the deadline don’t worry, please keep knitting and sending in your knitted hats ready for next years’ campaign. Keep an eye on our social media for when the next Big Knit campaign returns.

The idea snowballed and so far, the people of the UK have knitted an astonishing 6 million hats. Together, knitters across the UK have raised over £2 million for local Age UK charities. We hope we can work together to raise much more in the future. We know that many of you have already sent in hundreds of little hats to us here at 145 Meadowcroft. Thank you for sending those in and thank you to all the individuals, and to each and every knitting team countywide, who are helping us with the Big Knit campaign. Meet one of our knitting teams, “Team Mad Hatters” If you follow us on Facebook, it is highly likely that you will have read about them from our posts. Team Mad Hatters have been knitting lots of little hats over many years to help us raise money so that we can help older people in Hilary,Buckinghamshire.whoisalso a befriending volunteer with Age UK Bucks, saw details of the Big Knit on our website, which she felt looked really interesting and a worthwhile project. She started knitting with the help of her mum and two close friends. Then they came up with the name Team Mad Hatters. For the first Big Knit, the four of them knitted 300 hats. Many more people started to show an interest and wanted to join the team. The team grew very quickly and continues to do so to this day. One team member said “Once we started knitting, we found we couldn’t stop”.

Hilary’s home became hat HQ and her pet cat Poppy became team mascot, keeping a watchful eye over the knitters. During lockdown, Hilary visited some of the team members who were very isolated and Thank you to all our knitting groups and individuals who have been sending in so many wonderful little hats to us. Keep sending in your little knitted hats. if you would like to feature in our magazine (individuals or knitting groups welcome), please send in a short paragraph and a snapshot of you/the group to comms@ ageukbucks.org.uk. lonely. Suitably wrapped up in thermals, hat, scarf and fingerless gloves, with garden chair and hot drink, she sat outside knitting whilst a team member knitted in the warm on the other side of the window. Team members are dotted all over the county, from near to Buckingham right down to High Wycombe and beyond. A warm welcome awaits anybody wishing to join. If you would like to join Team Mad Hatters, or join alone, please contact Caroline via ageukbucks.org.ukcomms@

The Big Knit – what is it ? The Big Knit started back in 2003 as an idea. Age UK joined together with Innocent Smoothies and asked people of all generations to knit little woolly hats. Innocent Smoothies put those hats on their bottles, and for each one sold they donate 25p to Age UK. Age UK Buckinghamshire uses the money raised by its Innocent hat knitters to help fund the Befriending Service, which provides comfort to older people who are lonely or socially isolated by providing regular companionship.

A tribute to Frank ridgley Snr was held at the Black Lion in naphill on the 9th September to commemorate serving his country for many years during the First and Second World War.

107years ago, the 16-year-then old Frank volunteered to join his two brothers in the Royal Artillery, both of whom were serving in that regiment on active service during the First World War. In 1940, Frank, then, aged 42, again volunteered his service in the Second World War, this time in the Royal Engineers. He served with a British expeditionary force in France, returning via Dunkirk. During the battle of Britain, Frank, with his company of engineers, helped to keep airfields of fighter command operational. After the battle of Britain, Frank moved with his company to Bletchley Park where they built the huts used by Dilly Knox and Alan Turing to break the enigma code, which helped to shorten the Second World War and save many lives. Frank then took a short embarkation leave with his family, who at the time lived in Brimmers Hill, Widmer End. He was enroute to North Africa where he joined Field Marshal Montgomery’s eighth army. He took part in the battle of El Alamein, clearing minefields laid by the retreating Africa corp, thus allowing British troops and transport forces to pursue the Frankenemy.continued to serve in further theatres of conflict in Europe for which medals were issued, hence the presentation to his son Frank (Jnr) at the Black Lion on the 9th September 2021. In all, seven medals were presented to Frank (Jnr) by Brigadier Charlie Hewett, Commander Royal Artillery WeBrigade.now speak of Frank (Jnr), now a gentleman of 93 years old living in High Wycombe, who was the recipient of one of the seven medals for his service in Palestine in 1947–1948.

ridgley

Frank was accompanied for the presentation by family, friends and 14 members of the Royal Artillery Association High Wycombe Branch, all of whom are Frank’s fellow veterans, who put on a grand display and were well represented, with senior officers of the British Army introduced by Major Glenn Ridgley, Frank’s nephew, who was instigator of the whole ceremony. Frank gave his sincere thanks to everyone who made this day very special for him. Just another chapter in the Ridgley family history. Frank is just one of our many clients who use our Befriending service, and who have many a story to share and inspire. Frank now has a volunteer, Faisal, who has visited and built a friendship over the past three years. The pair of them have built up such great rapport. Thank you to both Frank (Jnr) & Frank (Snr) for all you have done for us throughout the years.

When I took up this unusual hobby of painting on a feather over 40 years ago, I never realised it would become a big part of my life; even more so in retirement. I do not have any formal art training, more an eye for nature and the environment. I have been perfecting this technique over the years. Most of the feathers come from the ducks, geese and swans in the park local to me. Once a year, when the birds shed their feathers during the months of June and July, I gather them up. I generally work with the colour and shape of a feather for inspiration. This helps with the way the artwork will take on its form. Quite often, I will use other natural forms (as well as the bird Priorfeathers).tostarting the painting, I very carefully sketch the outline onto the feather. The feather is then painted using oil paints. This method and choice of medium is very time-consuming, taking months of meticulous detailing before the image begins to take on its form. It is only then that I am happy with it.

The flowers were stitched onto a 10-metre banner spelling “God Save the Queen”, which were on display in Buckingham, outside the Old Gaol, over the Jubilee period. Did you bake a celebratory cake? or did you watch the celebrations on TV? Do let us know and send in your snaps

TfB also offer a free online E learning Module which contains useful information for older drivers and their families about challenges affecting drivers as they age and what you can do to help yourself.

Driving for many of us means convenience, independence, and the freedom to go where we like when we want, especially important if you live in a rural area. There are now over 5 million drivers aged 70 years old and over, but getting older doesn’t necessarily mean giving up driving and Transport for Buckinghamshire (TfB) would like to support drivers as they age to drive safely for longer.

For more information on the module or to book an assessment, visit: www.buckinghamshire.gov.uk and search ‘older driver’ or call 01296 382338

Everybody’s driving changes over time in different ways and for many reasons. As we get older our eyesight, physical fitness and reaction times may not be as good as they once were, so it’s important to make sure you have regular eye tests, you should be able to read a car number plate from 20 metres. A driving assessment can help to refresh your driving skills and restore confidence. TfB offer driving assessments to reassure drivers and support them. These informal ninety-minute assessments are in your own car and on familiar local roads. The assessments are confidential, supportive and will help brush up your skills and build confidence. Currently the assessment costs £45 for drivers living within the Buckinghamshire Council area.
