Quelle fierté de voir le GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN, concours prestigieux célébrant l’excellence d’une industrie vouée à la créativité, s’éclater sur la scène mondiale et devenir un gage d’excellence international, et ce, alors que la planète semblait sur pause, pour cause d’une pandémie.
It is with much pride that we saw the GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN, the prestigious competition celebrating an industry dedicated to creativity, emerge on the world stage and become a pledge of international excellence, at a time when the planet seemed on pause, because of a worldwide pandemic like no other.
Après treize éditions connues et reconnues, ce nouveau GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN a connu la participation de talents issus de plus de 30 pays en plus des candidats du Québec, loyaux au concours depuis sa toute première édition en 2007. De ce fait, le GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN rejoint la ligue internationale des concours majeurs dans l’industrie.
After thirteen strong editions, this GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN welcomed talents from more than 30 countries who joined Quebecois candidates, loyal to the contest since its very first edition in 2007. As a result, the GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN joins the international league of major industry award competitions.

Présentation de notre nouvelle marque internationale, un design par Metah. As it went international, we wanted to review the branding identity and universe of the GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN Awards.. Presenting our new international brand, a design by Metah. La philosophie derrière cette nouvelle image, conçue par le studio de Québec, Metah, nous est livrée par le concepteur Simon Hatem... sous forme d’un petit Haiku !

The philosophy behind this new image, designed by Metah Studio in Quebec City, is delivered to us by designer Simon Hatem … in the form of a little Haiku!

The A49 / DFS / STGM consortium was given the mandate to design and rebuild the Voltigeurs de Québec Armory, following the latter's fire in 2008. The building having retained most of its architectural integrity, thus as the character-defining elements that led to its designation as a national historic site of Canada, the reconstruction of the Armory was aimed at rehabilitating it as a multifunctional building. The consortium is therefore committed to preserving, stabilizing and ensuring the sustainability of all these important moments of the Armory, in a coherent and dynamic whole that enhances the cultural value of the place for future generations.

CaixaForum Sevilla Cultural Center
CaixaForum, c’est la coexistence pacifique d’ateliers culturels, de deux salles d’expositio et d’un auditorium. Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra Arquitecto conçoit ici la superposition de deux mondes qui s’unissent pour créer une merveille pour la ville de Séville. Le premier, le monde intérieur, est fouillé, sous-terrain et résolu. Il présente une architecture cartésienne et orthogonale, faite pour perdurer éternellement. Le second, le monde extérieur, est représenté par une verrière qui répond brillamment à la sensibilité contemporaine. Ces deux réalités architecturales sont reliées par un canal vertical de lumière naturelle. La verrière capte les rayons de soleil et les amène au hall souterrain par un grand puits qui filtre la lumière à travers une enveloppe poreuse en mousse d’aluminium. Captée du ciel et tamisée par une canopée sculpturale répondant au rythme des plantations en surface ; la lumière se fait signal et seuil d’une expérience unique. Ce projet primé Prix de l’année en architecture relève de l’acupuncture urbaine. Ici, la base construite en soussol pour un autre projet d’immeuble non réalisé, sur le périmètre d’une ville classée patrimoine de l’UNESCO, demandait sagesse et maîtrise. C’est ce que réalise brillamment ce projet exemplaire à plus d’un titre du centre socioculturel CaixaForum de Séville. Un poème…
CaixaForum is the peaceful coexistence of cultural workshops, two exhibition halls and an auditorium. Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra Arquitecto imagined the superposition of two worlds that come together to create a wonder for the city of Seville. The first, the inner world, is underground and resolved. It presents a Cartesian and orthogonal architecture, made to last forever. The second, the outside world, is represented by a glass roof, answering brilliantly to contemporary sensibilities. These two architectural realities are linked by a vertical channel of natural light. The glass roof captures the sun’s rays and leads them to the underground hall through a large well that filters the light through a porous envelope of aluminum foam. Captured from the sky and sifted by a sculptural canopy responding to the rhythm of the surface plantations; light becomes the signal and the threshold of a unique experience. This Award of the Year in Architecture is the embodiment of brilliant urban acupuncture. Here, the basement built for another unrealized building project, on the perimeter of a UNESCO heritage city, required wisdom and control. Mission accomplished with this exemplary project of the CaixaForum socio-cultural center in Seville. A poem…

La conception du musée du parc Gateway Arch de Saint-Louis au Missouri est entièrement intégrée dans le paysage et respecte la conception originale du parc conçu par Dan Kiley. La spectaculaire entrée circulaire en acier inoxydable et verre est posée sur le paysage et insérée avec précision dans la topographie. Elle permet aux visiteurs d’entrer dans le bâtiment en traversant le paysage avant de descendre sous terre. Le cadre unique, presque entièrement souterrain, a offert à Cooper Robertson l’occasion de considérer la durabilité et la performance du bâtiment. Ici, la preuve existe : une admirable architecture de musée peut faire briller toute une ville.
The Gateway Arch Park Museum in St. Louis, Missouri is exquisitely integrated into its landscape and respects Dan Kiley’s original park design. The spectacular stainless steel and glass circular entrance is beautifully placed on the landscape and inserted with precision in the topography. Visitors experience entering the building by passing through the landscape before descending underground. This unique setting, almost entirely underground, offered Cooper Robertson the opportunity to address the building’s durability and performance. Here, proof exists: A marvellous museum architecture can make a whole city shine.

The Tanyue Exhibition Center is nothing short of spectacular. It unveils itself in the shade of a large park in China like a refreshing island of discoveries.
Le centre est situé sur une colline avoisinante au parc Huashigou du district de Chongqing Yubei, un grand parc urbain comme le Central Park de New York. Challenge Design prévoit une véritable symbiose entre le bâtiment créé et l’environnement existant, sans chercher à détruire, obstruer ou vaincre leur toile de fond immédiate. La volonté ? Créer un centre d’activités communautaires que les gens admireront et respecteront, une architecture qui concentrera le point de vue pour en faire une expérience tout à fait personnelle. Pari réussi !
The center is located on a hill nearby Chongqing Yubei District’s Huashigou Park, much like New York’s Central Park. Challenge Design envisioned creating a true symbiosis between the building and the environment, without trying to destroy or defeat their immediate background. The idea? To design a building people would not only admire and respect but that would focus their perspective and allow users to experience the architecture on a personal level. Mission accomplished!

Ce centre culturel, niché en nature près de Pékin, comprend à la fois des zones d’exposition et une patinoire de 400 m² ! Ce projet de l’Atelier Alter Architects fascine dans la splendeur des Western Hills. Le paysage à distance est introduit de manière dynamique plutôt que statique. Un chemin continu s’y révèle, s’enroulant de l’extérieur vers l’intérieur. Cherchant à créer un dialogue avec les cours des maisons de Pékin, ainsi qu’avec le paysage de la Grande Muraille à proximité, un mur de maçonnerie soigneusement proportionné revêt le projet. The Cultural Center, nested in nature close to Beijing, hosts both exhibition halls and a 400-sqare-meter ice rink!. Located in the splendour of the Western Hills, Atelier Alter Architects ’ project is fascinating. The remote landscape is introduced dynamically rather than statically. A continuous path is revealed, winding from the outside to the inside. Seeking to create a dialogue with the courtyard houses of Beijing, as well as the nearby Great Wall landscape, the building material is a carefully proportioned masonry wall. Subtle detail; the iconic image of the “Western Hills’ fall foliage” is represented by a field of glittering-wood-laminated aluminum panels.

Dans un environnement géographique chinois fabuleux, face à des rivières, au bord de la mer, le projet culturel se niche au sein de jolies ressources naturelles. Pour ce projet, Kris Lin International Design a résolument adopté un style épuré et puisant. City of Light se déploie sur deux étages. Au premier, un square artistique en plein air et un hall d’accueil, et au second, le centre d’exposition et la salle de réception, combinent art et culture. Contrairement à la simplicité de la ligne droite, la courbe maîtresse procure une sensation naturelle, douce et ronde, dynamique et fluide. Le designer a ici combiné ces formes arrondies et géométriques pour créer une architecture aérodynamique. Il en résulte un bâtiment rythmé, à l’image des vagues de l’océan.
In a fabulous Chinese geographical environment, facing rivers and by the sea, this cultural project is nestled in beautiful natural resources. Kris Lin International Design resolutely adopted a clean and powerful design style. City of Light is spread over two floors. On the first floor, an open-air artistic square and a reception hall, and on the second floor, the exhibition center and reception hall, combine art and culture. Unlike the simplicity of the straight line, the architecture’s master curvaceous line provides a natural feel, soft and round, dynamic and fluid. The designer combined here these rounded and geometric shapes to create an aerodynamic architecture rendering rhythm to the building, like ocean waves.

Le concept clé mis de l’avant par ALA Architects est l’interaction des trois étages publics. Bibliothèque, cinéma, resto… tout y est ! Elle est courue et emballante. C’est un bâtiment à consommation d’énergie quasi nulle (NZEB), construit de matériaux locaux. Construit comme un pont qui s’étend sur plus de 100 mètres, le plan spatial inusité permet des espaces aérés, majestueux et libérés de colonnes.

L’abondance des concepts architecturaux verts appliqués systématiquement à ce bâtiment polyvalent au cœur de Düsseldorf, en Allemagne, le distingue de toute solution urbaine conventionnelle. Avec la démolition d’un viaduc à proximité créant une ligne de vue directe sur le Dreischeibenhaus et le théâtre, le nouveau développement a capitalisé sur ce caractère unique et fourni un cadre paysager rafraîchissant pour ces icônes d’après-guerre. Ici, un bâtiment triangulaire plus petit et un bâtiment trapézoïdal principal de cinq étages forment un paysage vert semblable à une vallée catapulté dans la cité. En inclinant les façades, ingenhoven architects ont créé un passage dynamique qui aligne à nouveau notre regard vers les majestueux monuments de la ville.
The bountiful green architectural concepts applied systematically to this multi-purpose building in the heart of Düsseldorf, Germany, distinguishes the oxygen-filled development from any and all conventional solutions. With the nearby demolition of an overpass creating a direct line of sight to the Dreischeibenhaus and the theatre, the new development emphasizes this uniqueness and provides a refreshingly appropriate landscaped setting for these post-war icons. Here, a smaller triangular building and a main fivestorey trapezoid building forms a valley-like greenscape. With the building’s sloping facades, ingenhoven architects created a dynamic through-passage that, again, sets our gaze towards the city’s landmarks.

Le plan pédagogique de l’école prévoit l’éducation d’êtres humains à part entière et la formation de citoyens responsables. Les architectes de Feastudio y conceptualisent la vision de l’éducation qui pourrait se produire partout. Les espaces sont assemblés et interconnectés. Ils créent ruelles et quartiers aux frontières définies par les enfants eux-mêmes. À l’image des ruelles en ville, celles de l’école serviront à nouer des amitiés et à jouer !
Rather than being a city school, this Iranian primary school is its own neighborhood and functions like a city. Children learn, grow and enjoy a taste of life! This school’s educational plan provides for the education of full human beings as responsible citizens. Feastudio’s architects conceptualized brilliantly the belief that education may occur anywhere. Spaces here are assembled and interconnected. They create alleys and smaller neighborhoods with borders defined by the children themselves. As with city alleys, these become the place where games are played and friendships are made.

Située sur l’ancien port historique et glorieux de l’île d’Ormuz dans le golf Persique, cette retraite colorée a été construite afin de responsabiliser la communauté locale et accueillir les géotouristes. En réponse à la détresse économique de l’Iran, le projet de ZAV Architects choisit d’augmenter le produit intérieur brut afin de générer un changement social. Plutôt que d’importer des matériaux dispendieux, une part plus importante du budget a été allouée aux coûts de main-d’œuvre locale. Les volumes des dômes sont également à l’échelle des capacités des artisans locaux et de la disponibilité des matériaux. Le résultat est une construction adaptative aux allures spatiales futuristes qui répond à l’inattendu. Ici, l’infinité de particules colorées qui forme la topographie arc-en-ciel de l’île sert de matériaux bruts et devient revêtements. Photo : DJI
The colourful multipurpose retreat built to empower the local community and enchant geo-tourists rests on the formerly glorious historic port of Hormuz Island in the Persian Gulf. Under Iran’s economic distress, the project by ZAV Architects opts to increase the gross domestic product to generate social change. Rather than importing expensive materials, a larger share of the budget was allocated to local labour costs and domes were scaled to cater to local craftsmanship. The result is an adaptive and futuristic spatial-like station that purveys the unexpected. Tenant de la « hytte » norvégienne, quatre types de cabines parsèment la colline comme des rochers sur une pente. Elles équilibrant intimité et perspectives. Combiné au verre, le bois brut d’origine locale habille les volumes. Les intérieurs, minimalistes et rustiques, sont caractérisés par le bois clair, le mobilier intégré, les vues encadrées et les contrastes spatiaux. Le rendu de Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter ? Des nids chaleureux certifiés Passivhaus qui incarnent parfaitement le concept nordique de « hygge » et de bien-être.
In the heart of France’s picturesque landscape of the Vosges, the hotel offers a holistic experience inspired by the Scandinavian ethos that highlights the region’s richness. Taking from the Norwegian “hytte”, four types of cabins dot the hill like rocks on a slope, balancing intimacy and perspectives. Combined with glass, raw wood of local origin covers the volumes. Minimalist and rustic, the interiors are characterized by light wood, built-in furniture, framed views and spatial contrasts. The rendering by Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter is warm, Passivhaus-certified cozy nests that perfectly embody the Nordic concept of “hygge” and well-being.

La rénovation d’un chalet de ski datant de 1979 dans les Blue Mountains de l’Ontario se caractérise par ses détails architecturaux valorisant l’artisanat canadien de la charpenterie et la splendeur du bois. En mariant l’ancien et le nouveau, Williamson Williamson capture l’histoire du lieu, tout en créant une expression moderne et durable qui s’arrime sur l’avenir du club. Ici, les nouvelles colonnes en Y, travaillées au CNC, font écho au bois massif d’origine. Pour baisser le niveau de décibel élevé du lieu, les architectes ont ajouté un plafond robuste. En sapin de Douglas, cette tente de bois réduit le bruit à un point tel que les skieurs peuvent désormais se chuchoter leurs secrets !

This renovation and addition onto a 1979 heavy-timber structure for a private ski club in Ontario’s Blue Mountains showcases architectural features that celebrate the proudly Canadian ethos and craft of timber construction. Tying together the old and new, Williamson Williamson’s captures the historic and beloved spirit of the existing heavy timber spaces while creating a modern and sustainable expression that speaks to the Club’s future, where CNC-milled new Y-shaped columns reinterpret the existing timbers. To reduce the space’s originally high levels of decibels, the architects designed a Douglas Fir acoustic ceiling that lowers noise to such an extent that ski secrets may now be traded off by whispering!

Taillée selon des axes fondateurs de la ville de Québec, une coupe dans le volume de l’ancien YMCA ouvre le cœur du bâtiment et crée un lieu imbriqué et inédit : le Diamant. Baigné de lumière, ce grand vide vertical devient lieu de rencontre entre les spectateurs et le théâtre, le passé et le présent, le réel et l’imaginaire. Tout en lumière, le cœur clair du bâtiment imaginé par Coarchitecture, insitu et Jacques Plante, devient passerelle qui mène aux halls sombres contrastants et laisse place aux spectacles.
Cut along the founding axes of Quebec City, the former YMCA’s volume opens up the heart of the building and creates a nested and one-of-a-kind place: the Diamond. Bathed in light, this great vertical void volume becomes the ideal mingling area and bridges the gap between spectators and theatre, past and present, real and imaginary. Bathed in light, the clear heart of the building designed by Coarchitecture, insitu and Jacques Plante, acts as a gateway that leads to the contrasting dark halls where shows go on!

Ce radieux immeuble commercial de 10 étages s’est érigé sur un terrain de moins de 15 mètres de large, à Edmonton, en Alberta.
The stunning house-of-glass 10-storey office building was built on a single 15m-wide lot in Edmonton, Alberta.
Il comporte l’un des plus grands murs solaires du Canada avec 560 panneaux photovoltaïques. Il fournit 80 % des besoins électriques du bâtiment. Relié au réseau de la ville, il restitue l’excès d’énergie les jours ensoleillés. Le projet de Dub Architects abrite des locaux d’enseignement privé, des espaces de bureaux et un rez-de-chaussée qui engage la rue via les usages pop-up changeants. Ici, la lumière naturelle pénètre abondamment et, aux extrémités du bâtiment, de grands balcons séparés thermiquement et des écrans solaires contrôlent la lumière du soleil.
It features one of Canada’s largest solar walls with 560 photovoltaic panels. It provides 80% of the building’s electrical requirements and connects to the city’s grid, returning excess power on sunny days. Dub Architects’ project hosts private educational facilities, office spaces and a ground level that engages the street with changing pop-up uses. Here, natural light flows in abundantly as the ends of the building feature large thermally separated balconies and solar screens to control sunlight.

Le « co-living » compense les dépenses en louant par chambre à coucher. Les pièces communes offrent un sentiment de communauté, tandis que les chambres et salles de bains privées comblent les besoins d’indépendance. Structurellement complexe, le défi d’accueillir des espaces de cohabitation dans un ancien lieu de culte grandiose, mais endommagé, nécessitait de la subtilité afin de servir les usagers et tout en conservant les caractéristiques architecturales déterminantes du bâtiment. Remarquons les ouvertures de fenêtres à fentes introduites dans l’extérieur en maçonnerie lourde par StudioMB. Sublimes et nostalgiques, elles rendent hommage à l’architecture d’origine.
This 1917 church converted into 8 “co-living” units balances the old and the new exquisitely and caters to Washington’s urgent need of affordable housing solutions. Organized “co-living” offsets expenses by renting by the bedroom. Shared living quarters offer a sense of community, while private bedrooms and bathrooms pamper needs of independence. The structurally complex challenge of accommodating co-living uses into the grand but earthquake-damaged worship space required subtlety to meet users’ needs while adhering to the city’s standards for retaining defining architectural features. For instance, paying homage to the building’s original architecture, StudioMB introduced slotted window openings into the heavy masonry exterior.

Cette inouïe maison unifamiliale en béton construite dans un quartier huppé densément peuplé de Séoul n’avait qu’une mission : sauvegarder l’intimité des vedettes de cinéma qui y demeurent. Afin de créer ce sentiment de vie privée dans un quartier chargé et à l’abri des regards des admirateurs et paparazzi, atelierjun a minimisé les ouvertures des fenêtres et les a placées uniquement au-dessus du jardin, face à l’est. Massif, le bâtiment se distingue comme un rocher géant arrondi par l’érosion. La méticuleuse sélection des matériaux de finition extérieure et les méthodes de construction sophistiquées en font une maison de ville unifamiliale étonnamment élégante.
This concrete single-family house in a densely populated posh neighbourhood of Seoul built for a famous couple of movie stars required the highest regard to privacy. To create a feeling of one’s space somewhere busy and avoid stalking by fans and paparazzi, atelierjun chose to minimize window openings and place them solely over the garden, facing east. The boulder-looking building’s massiveness stands out amongst the cityscape, like a giant rock rounded out by erosion. The meticulous selection of exterior finishing materials and sophisticated building methods result is an astonishingly sleek single-family city home.

In the heart of the Plateau, this modular prefabricated gem of a project makes the most of an old barn-turned-century-old-car-shed, while preserving the lot’s sole outdoor space—a small side yard.
Créée par TBA – Thomas Balaban Architecte, l’extension flottante au deuxième étage valorise ce précieux espace extérieur tout en ajoutant une superficie de vie pour la jeune famille qui y fait son nid. Revêtu de panneaux plats galvanisés, le volume miroitant reflète la lumière, conférant à l’extension une sensation de légèreté et fournissant de la lumière au jardin dessous. Le métal réfléchissant réduit également l’impact visuel du nouveau volume sur les maisons adjacentes en étroite proximité. Brillant !
Designed by TBA – Thomas Balaban Architecte, the second floor floating extension values the precious outdoor space while adding living space to the young family who has made it their home. Clad in galvanized flat panels, the shimmering volume reflects light, lending the extension a feeling of lightness and providing light to the garden below. The reflective metal also reduces the visual impact of the new volume on neighboring homes. Simply brilliant!

Sur un terrain escarpé au bord du lac Memphémagog, la géométrie angulaire de la maison rend chaque espace singulier tout en brouillant la perception de l’échelle. Tandis que l’enveloppe des trois volumes de l’étage supérieur est monochrome, le soubassement, par ses tonalités de rouille et de bruns, se fond à la rugosité des pruches et dissimule la maison depuis le lac. À l’intérieur, _naturehumaine a opté pour des matériaux intemporels, des planchers de béton, des plafonds ornés de bois et des éléments de mobiliers intégrés.

Sur un éperon rocheux surplombant le Lac Memphrémagog, deux blocs de bois forment une maison et s’harmonisent en douceur avec leur environnement. Imaginé par yh2, le premier bloc est placé comme un pont entre les deux plateaux qui forment le cap rocheux, enjambant l’écoulement naturel sans gêner le passage de l’eau. Le bloc supérieur repose sur l’inférieur de façon décalée. Il le surplombe ainsi des deux côtés et crée d’accueillants espaces extérieurs abrités tout en laissant la nature et la lumière s’immiscer aux intérieurs. Assise sur le site comme les blocs de construction d’un jeu d’enfant, la maison est une composition géométrique abstraite humblement nichée dans la nature.
On a rocky outcrop overlooking Lake Memphremagog, two blocks of wood form a house and blend gently with their surroundings. Designed by yh2, the first block is placed as a bridge between the two plateaus that form the rocky cape. It spans the site’s natural flow without obstructing the passage of water during heavy rains. The upper block rests on the lower one in a staggered manner. It overhangs the lower volume on two sides, creating sheltered outdoor spaces to enjoy and flowing natural light and scenery to the interiors. Rested on site like kiddie building blocks, the house is a stunning and unpretentious abstract geometric composition, beautifully nestled in nature.

Exceptionnelle, cette maison de campagne rurale, conçue pour un couple et leurs deux enfants, est construite dans une grande clairière. Sur ce lot fortement boisé de 90 acres… une cabane en rondins de bois du 19e siècle existait. La conservation des qualités historiques et rustiques du bâtiment existant était ici primordiale. superkül relie l’ancien au nouveau par un passage vitré tout en gardant les deux réalités distinctes et séparées. Les deux formes de construction s’unifient en un tout cohérent grâce à l’expression matérielle des revêtements extérieurs. La « Woodhouse » reflète l’esprit affable et vivant des clients, incarné dans une palette de matériaux chaleureux et texturés et une diversité d’ambiances spatiales.
The striking rural country house was designed for a couple and their two children on an existing densely forested 90-acre, 19th-century woodlog-cabin lot. It stands amidst a large clearing… Preserving the historic and rustic qualities of the existing building was paramount in superkül’s approach. It remains distinct and separated and yet connected to the new addition by a glassed link. The two buildings’ forms are unified into a cohesive whole through the expression of exterior cladding materials. Woodhouse reflects the affable and lively spirit of the clients, embodied in the warm, textured material palette and diverse living quarters.

The modular and prefabricated No Footprint House (NFH) is located at the edge of the vast tropical rain forests along the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
Ici, des panneaux individuels convertissent les espaces intérieurs en espaces extérieurs et jouent sur la dynamique qui existe entre la nature et l’environnement bâti, l’une des caractéristiques-clés de l’architecture tropicale et du contrôle climatique construit. Conçue par A-01 (A Company / A Foundation) afin de minimiser l’impact de la construction et se fondre dans son environnement naturel, la maison atteint l’éco-responsabilité en termes de performances environnementales, économiques, sociales et spatiales.
Here, individual panels convert interior to exterior spaces and play with the dynamic among nature and the built environment, one of the key features in tropical architecture and built climate control. La hinterhouse se niche ainsi dans les montagnes densément boisées des Laurentides, vue sur la vallée du Mont-Tremblant. Ce refuge préfabriqué du concept hôtelier hintercompany est compact, discret et transformable. Ses 930 pieds carrés d’espace de vie se referment entièrement ou s’ouvrent vers l’extérieur pour laisser la nature y entrer. Conçue par Ménard Dworkind architecture & design, la maison est entièrement enveloppée de baguettes de cèdre blanc embouveté. D’ingénieux volets coulissants permettent d’ajuster l’entrée de la lumière et le niveau d’intimité. Coup de théâtre… l’’escalier sinueux qui fait son chemin au bas de la colline mène paisiblement à l’espace sauna, douche et hamacs.

This prefabricated refuge, created for the hintercompany hotel concept, is compact, discreet and transformable. Its 930 square-foot living space either completely encloses itself or opens outward to let nature in. Designed by Ménard Dworkind architecture & design, the house is wrapped in beaded white cedar sticks. Ingenious sliding shutters allow to adjust the entry of light and level of privacy. An added bliss … the winding staircase that runs its way down the hill leads peacefully to a sauna-shower-and-hammock haven!

Sur ce terrain vallonné, l’idyllique panorama de 360 degrés rend l’expérience de vivre aux Îles, spectaculaire. Conservant sa couleur naturelle, le bardeau de cèdre recouvrant les façades démontre une beauté délicate et une simplicité élégante. À la tombée du jour, il se fait une toile texturée sur laquelle scintillent les couchers de soleil.

Envisioned by la Shed architecture, they open up onto the maritime landscape and offer a graphic and embodied vision of the traditional gable roof typology. Atop its hill, the houses’ 360-degree panorama enriches the space and elevates the experience to spectacular horizons. Retaining its original natural colour, the cedar shingle exterior covering demonstrates delicate beauty and elegant simplicity. At day fall, the shingles become a textured canvas on which sunsets glisten.

Courbes et couleurs signalent désormais la présence d’un important complexe de logement social à Montréal. Datant des années 70, Saia Barbarese Topouzanov Architectes a su le transformer en milieu de vie sain, stimulant et sécuritaire. Une « rue partagée », introduite au cœur même de l’îlot, favorise les échanges entre les résidents de ses 182 unités. La facture visuelle s’inspire ici du travail de l’artiste franco-vénézuélien Carlos Cruz-Diez. Grâce à une astucieuse combinaison de quatre couleurs de brique, les architectes ont obtenu une palette de sept teintes qui animent les façades. De joyeux escaliers en spirale ajoutent une touche de fantaisie à l’ensemble et au quartier.
Curves and colors now signal where stands a major social housing complex in Montreal. Saia Barbarese Topouzanov Architects has transformed the complex dating back to the 70s into a healthy, stimulating and safe living environment. A “shared street”, introduced in the very heart of the block, promotes a sense of community amongst its 182-unit residents. The visual design here is inspired by the work of Franco-Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz-Diez. Through a clever combination of four brick colors, the architects obtained a palette of seven shades that enliven the facades. Cheerful spiral staircases add a touch of whimsicality to the whole and to the neighborhood.

Imaginé par Lemay, le volume recouvert de bois épouse la forme du sommet, s’unit à la topographie et met en scène le paysage proche et lointain. La toiture blanche s’y dépose, et se projette au-dessus des pentes. Se prolongeant de l’intérieur vers l’extérieur, la coque en cèdre blanc noueux se déploie sur le noyau central, en lame de bois. Tel un arbre fissuré, l’intérieur expose le bois naturel, doux et chaleureux et dialogue merveilleusement avec la nordicité du lieu.
Imagined by Lemay, the white wooden volume gently embraces the shape of the summit, unites with the topography and sets the scene for spectacular surroundings. Its white roof settles onto the slopes, detaching from the ground and creating an amplifying void. Extending for the inside to the outside, its white cedar shell unfolds over the central core, dematerializing itself into wooden planks. The interior displays natural soft and warm wood and creates a wonderful whimsical dialogue with the nordicity of the remote site.

C’est le paysage du Parc Central de Gatineau qui inspire l’architecture intérieure et l’enveloppe extérieure de cette bibliothèque plainpied aux pavillons déployés dans un écrin de verre. Atelier TAG et NEUF architecte(s) imaginent un bâtiment aux épicentres qui regroupent toutes les pièces fermées, libérant ainsi le reste de l’édifice de toutes contraintes de cloisonnement et de fonctions figées. Une toiture unificatrice reliant les trois pavillons devient l’abri emblématique de cette institution civique. Ininterrompue, la transparence des façades permet de révéler, à tout moment de la journée, un geste architectural fort qui annonce le caractère civique et culturel du bâtiment.

Conçu par Menkès Shooner Dagenais LeTourneux Architectes, le bâtiment propose une géométrie distinctive. Sa matérialité, alliant transparence et opacité, et l’abondance de grandes ouvertures vers les ateliers du premier étage en font un nouveau repère sur le campus. Il contribue à un important projet d’aménagement paysager. Présentant l’œuvre d’art publique Réaction en chaîne de l’artiste Ludovic Boney, le parc devient un point de convergence vivant qui encourage la collaboration et l’innovation, valeurs fondamentales de l’institution et de ses étudiants.
Establishing a dialogue with the Student Housing building and open onto the park that separates them, Pavilion D is now home to ÉTS’s student activities. Designed by Menkès Shooner Dagenais LeTourneux Architectes, the building features a distinctive geometry. Its materiality, combining transparency and opacity, as well as its large openings onto the first floor workshops make it a new landmark on campus. The project also contributes to an important landscaping project on campus. Featuring the public work of art among other things, by integrating a park that connects it to the Maison des étudiants and features the public work of art Réaction en chaîne by artist Ludovic Boney, the park becomes a lively focal point that encourages collaboration and innovation, fundamental values shared by the institution and its students.

À Montréal, les structures temporaires du Grand Prix F1 du Canada sont remplacées par un bâtiment permanent, lumineux et durable. Élément phare du projet, la gigantesque charpente du toit, de 1 425 m3 est entièrement construite en bois. Sachant qu’un arbre qui croît capte le dioxyde de carbone et le séquestre dans sa fibre, ce volume impressionnant de bois correspond au piégeage de plus de 1 000 tonnes de CO2. On considère donc, ici, le bois cargo-négatif. Les architectes FABG ont su doter Montréal de structures qui reflètent l’identité de la ville et qui desservent majestueusement un événement grandiose, vu par plus de 300 millions de personnes mondialement. Chapeau !
Montreal’s F1 Canadian Grand Prix temporary structures are long gone.Now stands a permanent, bright and durable building. The flagship element here is, without a doubt, the gigantic 1,425-cubic-meter roof frame, entirely made of wood. Knowing that a growing tree captures carbon dioxide and sequesters it in its fiber, this impressive volume of wood amounts to entrapping over 1,000 tonnes of CO2. Wood here is thus considered carbo-negative. Les architectes FABG have endowed Montreal with structures that reflect the identity of the city and that majestically serve a grandiose event, seen by more than 300 million people worldwide. Bravo!

The newly-built industrial plant features technology beautifully, showcasing Soprema’s values of the city of Sherbrooke’s dynamism.
Le bâtiment industriel, une conception de ABCP Architecture, se distingue par l’utilisation de matériaux distinctifs et un travail volumétrique soigné. Un grand volume transparent permet ainsi de lire à travers les façades les processus industriels robotiques de l’entreprise. Des ouvrants assurent une ventilation naturelle et rythment la façade. Un mur rideau qui se prolonge jusqu’au sol rythme la façade et accentue la légèreté… un attribut qu’on croirait pourtant étranger aux réalités industrielles !
The industrial building designed by ABCP Architecture distinguishes itself by the use of distinctive materials and a carefully calculated volumetric work. Boldly displaying technology, the company’s industrial robotic processes can be seen and followed by looking through the glass. Opened upon sections to provide natural ventilation and to punctuate the flow, the facade hosts a curtain wall that falls upon the floor, adding rhythm and accentuating the effect of lightness… an attribute we would not naturally give to an industrial construction!

GKC Architectes y décline le symbolisme du modélisme et du tissage. Aux lignes épurées et contemporaines, deux volumes s’entremêlent. L’un opaque, et l’autre vitré, ils suggèrent la transformation d’une matière brute en matière tissée. En apesanteur, le volume opaque reflète la pensée créative de la maison fièrement québécoise alors que le centre de distribution s’habille de béton blanc aux motifs évoquant des fils entrelacés. Tout en établissant une cohérence entre paysage et architecture, le projet réduit également son impact sur l’environnement par une approche bioclimatique et une gestion réfléchie de l’apport bioénergétique.

GKC Architectes chose to play on the symbolism of fashion model making and weaving. Two clean-and-contemporarylined volumes intertwine. One opaque, and the other translucid, they suggest the transformation of a raw matter into a woven material. As if it were floating, the opaque volume reflects the creative thinking of the proud Quebecois house, while the distribution center is dressed in white concrete with patterns evoking interlaced threads. While establishing consistency between landscape and architecture, the project also reduces its impact on the environment through a bioclimatic approach and thoughtful management of the bioenergy input.

Mellow Yellow Hangout Cette grande table urbaine qui ondule sous le couvert forestier des févriers d’Amérique s’est dressée au cœur de Montréal au plus grand bonheur des citoyens, avides d’habiter à nouveau la ville après la pandémie de la COVID. Aux allures d’une piste de course, la table de 100 mètres, déployée par ADHOC architectes, créait une succession de mises en scène et d’ambiances où l’emploi et judicieux d’objets recyclés et iconiques de la gastronomie suggérait les repères de distanciation sécuritaire. Un choix raffiné d’accessoires design, un éclairage tamisé, un graphisme éclatant et une conception de mobilier sur mesure plus qu’amusante… Le tout, sous le spectre du jaune, ton sur ton !

Plus de 400 condominiums luxueux et lumineux composent cet édifice de verre dessiné par Menkès Shooner Dagenais Letourneux Architectes et réalisé par Groupe Brivia et Groupe Tianco. La grande variété d’unités d’habitations présente des aménagements à aire ouverte et une fenestration généreuse. Celle-ci baigne les pièces d’une abondance de lumière naturelle et offre des vues imprenables sur la ville. Dans les espaces intérieurs, le béton, le bois, le métal, la céramique et le verre coexistent en parfaite symbiose. Au cœur du grand ensemble, un immense jardin de forme entièrement organique de vient unifier cette construction en établissant une harmonie entre l’extérieur et l’intérieur, et en offrant un nouvel espace vert au promeneur. Cette audacieuse conception faite de blocs décalés rappelle l’iconique ligne tracée par Moshe Safdie pour Habitat67… Un clin d’œil réfléchi à l’emblématique de l’architecture contemporaine de Montréal. Le jury s’est laissé charmé par l’exécution exemplaire du projet, l’attention portée aux détails et l’intégration des espaces extérieurs. Le jardin vert, reliant les diverses tours, combine parfaitement les divers matériaux mis de l’avant ainsi que les solutions de durabilité du projet.
Designed by Menkès Shooner Dagenais Letourneux Architectes and directed by Brivia Group and Tianco Group, it is home to more than 400 luxurious and luminous condos. The wide variety of housing units with open-plan developments. The generous windows bathe the main rooms with an abundance of natural light, in addition to offering stunning views of the surrounding area. Within the interiors, concrete, wood, metal, ceramic and glass coexist in perfect harmony. In the heart of the large high-rise complex, a massive organic garden unites this construction. It establishes a balance between the exterior and the interior and hosts a beautiful green space for its residents’ enjoyment and after-dinner strolls. To the refined eye, the staggered-block bold design hints to the line drawn by Moshe Safdie for Habitat 67. A wonderful nod to a Montreal contemporary architecture emblem… Bravo!

Suite à son ascension commerciale fulgurante, la Cidrerie Lacroix souhaitait renouveler ses installations, conserver des allures rustiques et s’enraciner dans la réalité agrocommerciale d’aujourd’hui. Pari réussi. En s’inspirant du concept de Sid Lee Architecture, Syscomax et Jean-François Dupuis Architecte ont entamé un agrandissement majeur reflétant à la fois l’héritage de plus d’un siècle et l’évolution de l’entreprise familiale. Entouré de son verger, l’accueillant bâtiment, rayonne et rassemble, de jour comme de soir. Réalisé à temps pour la saison des pommes, le lieu surprend dans le panorama de Saint-Joseph-du-Lac par sa prestance et par la qualité des ressources qui y sont maîtres.
To cater to its fast-paced commercial rise, Cidrerie Lacroix wanted to renew its facilities while maintaining a rustic feel and taking root in today’s agro-commercial reality. Mission accomplished. Inspired by Sid Lee Architecture’s initial concept, Syscomax and Jean-François Dupuis Architecte undertook the major expansion reflecting both the a century-old heritage and the family business evolution over the years. Surrounded by its orchard, the most-welcoming building, radiates and brings people together, day and night. Completed just in time for apple-picking season, the quality-built cider house stands out majestically in the Saint-Joseph-du-Lac panorama.

La vie en jaune Mingletown
C’est l’été 2020. Les Montréalais reprennent possession de leur ville et l’habitent à nouveau après avoir été frappés par le premier confinement de leur vie. Ondulant sous le couvert forestier des févriers d’Amérique, une grande table est dressée. Elle invite ceux et celles avides d’échanges et de chaleur humaine à prendre place ! Nommé GRAND PRIX DE L’ANNÉE en design urbain et architecture de paysage, le projet TULIP - Prenez Place ! imaginé par ADHOC architectes se voulait une véritable halte urbaine ravigotante et rafraichissante. Pari réussi. Ici, une grande table extérieure s’étale le long du parc. Elle virevolte, monte et descend, tourne sur elle-même, et laisse découvrir un parcours de mises en scène et d’ambiances de 100 mètres de long. Des centaines d’accessoires recyclés, rappelant la gastronomie et l’art de la table, y sont dispersés et agissent comme astucieux repères afin de séparer les bulles. Déclinée ton sur ton en jaune, cette installation temporaire a charmé le jury pour l’ingéniosité avec laquelle elle préconise la distanciation sociale tout en encourageant la socialisation. D’y prendre place signifiait s’impliquer dans la convivialité, à ce moment historique où nous en avions tous besoin. L’oasis urbaine de l’année, sans contredit !
Flashback to Montreal in the summer of 2020. Eager to regain possession of their city and mingle again after being their first lockdown ever, Montrealers were invited to take a seat under the forest canopy of American honey locusts. The table is set. Ready to minger? Granted with the AWARD OF THE YEAR in urban design and landscape architecture, the temporary installation designed by ADHOC architectes was imagined as an invigorating, refreshing and safe urban hangout. Mission accomplished. Here, a 100-meter urban table spreads out along the park. It twirls, goes up and down, turns back on itself, and reveals a winding path of ambiance. Hundreds of recycled objects, reminiscent of gastronomy and tableware, are scattered here and there along the table and act as clever markers to separate social bubbles. Au pied de l’emblématique mont Royal, ce plan de design urbain visionnaire permet de recréer un habitat typique de la forêt laurentienne et célèbre le retour de la biodiversité au centre-ville. Sur l’empreinte d’une artère conventionnelle, l’esplanade imaginée par civiliti + Madaworks + SNC-Lavalin est rythmée de salons d’où contempler nature et patrimoine bâti. Ici, les eaux de pluie et de neige fondante sont récupérées le long d’un sillon qui serpente en bordure de l’esplanade. Le ruisseau se dirige vers un jardin d’eau légèrement en pente. Au centre du Grand Foyer, servant d’agora et de bassin de rétention, un anneau de feu permet de s’arrêter et de se réchauffer, les durs mois d’hiver venus.
At the foot of the iconic Mount Royal, this visionary urban design plan recreates a Laurentian Forest habitat and celebrates the return of biodiversity, downtown. On the footprint of a conventional artery, the esplanade conceived by civiliti + Madaworks + SNC-Lavalin is punctuated with intimate lounge areas from which to contemplate nature and the built heritage. Here, rainwater and melting snow are collected along a furrow that winds along the edge of the esplanade. The stream heads towards water garden on the sloping side of the site. In the center of the Grand Foyer that acts as an agora and retention basin, a ring of fire warms city goers stopping by to warm up, once winter hits again.

Le bâtiment translucide de la centrale électrique de McGill à Montréal abrite des générateurs capables d’alimenter les opérations du campus en cas de panne de courant. Il est situé au pied du Mont-Royal. Pour éviter de rivaliser avec l’histoire et le patrimoine du site, WAA+ a déployé, autour de la centrale, un écrin de verdure minimaliste et épuré où toits verts et plates-bandes réduisent les îlots de chaleur. Le projet met l’accent sur son voisinage montagneux et valorise une variété de plantes indigènes. Il transforme une ascension du mont autrement difficile, en une agréable promenade. On y zigzague à travers les terrasses combinées aux escaliers en acier qui s’illuminent comme par magie la nuit.
The McGill Powerhouse’s translucid building houses generators that would supply campus operations in the event of power failure. It is located at the foot of the Mount Royal. To avoid rivalling the historical heritage of the site, WAA+ displayed around the powerhouse, lush greenery in a minimalistic and pure landscape in which green roofs and planting beds reduce heat islands. The project emphasizes its mountain vicinity and showcases a variety of the Mount Royal indigenous plants. It transforms an otherwise tedious ascension, into a pleasant stroll through zigzag terraces, combined with steel stairs that light up like magic come nightfall.

La collaboration entre SWA/BALSLEY et WEISS/ MANFREDI a laissé place à plusieurs initiatives vertes pour transformer un site sous-utilisé en laboratoire où s’établit une réflexion durable fondamentalement esthétique et écologique. La proximité au bord de mer et l’échange ferroviaire avaient entraîné des décennies d’industrialisation et d’abandon ultérieur. Aujourd’hui, le parc tire parti de ses histoires écologiques et industrielles et sert une communauté en croissance rapide et contrer les intempéries. Un plus : La topographie spectaculaire est rehaussée par un promontoire ombragé et herbeux.

The collaboration between SWA/BALSLEY and WEISS/ MANFREDI resulted in numerous green initiatives that transformed the underutilized site into a fundamentally aesthetic and ecological laboratory for sustainable thinking. The site’s proximity to the waterfront and rail exchange had prompted decades of industrialization and subsequent abandonment. Today, the park leverages its layered ecological and industrial histories to serve a rapidly growing community and buffer against extreme weather events. Plus … the site’s dramatic topography is enhanced by a shaded, grassy promontory.

Le site d’intervention au parc de Magallanes se situe sur la rive droite du fleuve Guadalquivir à Séville.
The intervention site at Magallanes Park is located on the right bank of the Guadalquivir River in Seville.
Le projet de Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra Arquitecto proposait la création d’un espace public de qualité à partir des sites préexistants, fortement dégradés. Il existe maintenant un bel ensemble végétal d’ellipses vertes qui permet d’assembler les arbres en bosquets. Une promenade agréable, longeant le bord de la rivière, s’étend et facilite l’accès au nouveau centre sportif d’aviron. À noter : Élément-clé, le système de drainage permet de capter l’eau de pluie et de diriger l’infiltration sous le sol.
The landscape architecture project designed by Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra Arquitecto proposed the generation of a quality public space on the pre-existing site of the severely degraded grounds. Now grows a beautiful plant set of green ellipses that align the trees in groves. A nice promenade, following the margin of the river, extends and facilitates access to the new Rowing Sports Center. Fun fact: A key aspect of the project, the drainage system captures rainwater and directs infiltration underground.

Ce projet d’architecture de paysage crée une expérience « jardin » et une promenade paysagère qui s’appuient sur les caractéristiques naturelles du site. Cette réalisation de Vertige paysage est la découverte d’un jardin secret au détour d’un escalier intégré à la topographie naturelle du site. Le souhait était de s’harmoniser avec le volume de la maison et les tons doux de l’architecture et de favoriser l’intimité et l’intemporalité. L’absence de surface gazonnée laisse place à une composition végétale vivace à l’aspect naturel qui habite tout le périmètre de la résidence. La façade est présentée en deux étapes : un seuil public vu de la rue et un seuil intime qui se déploie comme une petite cour intérieure.
This landscape architecture project offers a "garden" experience and a landscaped walk, built on the natural characteristics of the site. Imagined by Vertige paysage, the space is designed like a secret garden at the bend of a staircase integrated into the natural topography of the site, harmonizing with the volume and soft tones of the architecture while creating a sense of intimacy and timelessness. The lack of a grassy surface gives way to a perennial plant composition with a natural look in shades of green that inhabits the entire perimeter of the residence. The facade is presented in two stages: a public threshold seen from the street and an intimate threshold that is seen near the front door and unfolds onto a small interior courtyard. Beautiful!

Pour son aménagement paysager,la demande du client est de créer un spa nordique à domicile et d’améliorer les vues sur le paysage environnant. Composé d’une falaise, le terrain représentait tout un défi pour la réalisation. L’Équipe Logan & Josiane Léger Architecte paysagiste a su concevoir de nombreux niveaux pour créer de multiples sous-espaces, tous propices à la détente. Le havre de paix offre ainsi une douche extérieure intime, un coin cheminée, un espace détente à l’ombre de la forêt. Une imposante terrasse surplombe le jardin et boucle la mise en scène. La polyvalence de l’aménagement et la simplicité du design de cette cour arrière créent un véritable engouement pour la nature au fil des saisons.
This sumptuous property in the Laurentians has been completely transformed, inside and out. For its landscaping, the customer request was to create a Nordic home spa and enhance the surrounding landscape views. The cliff-bearing property presented quite a challenge. Équipe Logan & Josiane Léger Architecte paysagiste chose to design many levels, sublimely creating relaxationconductive sub-spaces. Among other perks, the haven hosts an intimate outdoor shower, a fireplace cozy area and a place to relax in the forest shade. An imposing terrace overlooks the garden and sets the ambiance. The backyard landscape architecture’s layout versatility and design simplicity create a fabulous place to connect with mother nature.

Le site sur lequel cette résidence riveraine s’est bâtie se prévalait d’une des plus belles vues sur son territoire et sur le Richelieu. L’emplacement de la maison choisi pour maximiser la luminosité intérieure limite la superficie arrière disponible pour l’aménagement des divers espaces souhaités. Eco-Verdure positionne intelligemment l’immense piscine, les différents niveaux de portes donnant sur la cour arrière et les multiples terrasses afin de créer des ambiances uniques et unifiées. Positionnée directement sur la limite sécuritaire de distance de la zone riveraine, la piscine sert de pièce maitresse et crée un palier intermédiaire entre le rez-de-jardin et le rez-de-chaussée.
The site on which this riverside residence was built hosted one of the most beautiful views over its territory, on the shores of the Richelieu River. The house’s footprint location chosen to maximize interior light and limiting the riverside yard space available, the development of the various spaces represented quite a challenge. Eco-Verdure positioned the impressive swimming pool, the different levels of doors opening onto the backyard and the multiple terraces in order to create unique and unified atmospheres. Positioned directly on the safe distance limit of the riparian zone, the swimming pool serves as a centerpiece and creates an intermediate level between the garden level and the ground floor.

Conception Horticole du Nord imagined a staircase bordered by abundant greenery and made of St.Marc natural stone. It leads to the white paved backyard. Western cedar wood, durable and expected to turn gray quickly to match the home exterior, compose the property’s vegetable garden bins and privacy screens. Come spring time, thousands of white flowers cover the ground. Poolside, glass fences and ramps allow for the magnificent view of the bridge and the island of Montreal to prevail. Leading from the house to the shore, a stone path creates a sense of clean, linear depth.

As part of the award-winning real estate development project, this urban design plan reopens the door to an iconic element of the neighborhood’s identity, the Jacques-Cartier Bridge.
Imaginé par NÓS Architectes, le plan s’articule par la formation d’îlots de tailles favorables aux déplacements piétonniers et par la mise en valeur des vues sur le pont. Un réseau d’espaces verts et de tracés polyvalents se déploie et crée une esplanade centrale conviviale. Une infrastructure verte paysagère intégrant une gestion durable des eaux de ruissellement à l’échelle du site et la répartition graduelle des densités et hauteurs contribuent à la création d’un front bâti structurant et attrayant.
Imagined by NÓS Architects, the plan is articulated by the formation of islands of sizes favorable to pedestrian movements and by the beautification of the stunning bridge views. DÉMARCHE DE PLACEMAKING / PLACEMAKING PROCESS - ESPLANADE CARTIER Montréal, Québec, Canada La démarche de Placemaking pour l’Esplanade Cartier vise l’appropriation des espaces publics par les citoyens. L’approche pluridisciplinaire orchestrée par NÓS Architectes a impliqué 41 personnes, dont 28 experts usagers du milieu communautaire. Le résultat ? L’intégration d’un maximum d’éléments issus des entretiens avec la communauté et l’implantation d’une nouvelle culture de projet visant l’implication des citoyens et la réalisation d’espaces conçus à l’image du quartier et de ses habitants.
The Esplanade Cartier’s Placemaking process aims at the appropriation of public spaces by citizens. The multidisciplinary approach orchestrated by NÓS Architectes involved 41 people including 28 expert users of the community environment. The result? The integration of as many elements as possible from interviews with the community and the establishment of a new project culture aimed at involving citizens and creating spaces designed to reflect the neighborhood and its inhabitants.

Designed for a young couple, this unique home is located in a new town in the northernmost part of Minoh City, Osaka, Japan, surrounded by a rich natural environment. While the site is developing at a rapid pace, most homes built have nothing to do with the natural environment or local character of the area. Enters Yasuyuki Kitamura! Simply put, his vision is to set forward the relationship between man and nature, while recognizing the natural qualities of the environment.

Ici, de profonds avant-toits prolongent l’intérieur, tandis que les recoins emboîtés créent un espace ambigu. De simples ouvertures relient visuellement l’extérieur aux intérieurs, alors qu’un énorme puits de lumière fait entrer la verdure des arbres, la chaleur du soleil et la légèreté du ciel dans la maison. Le résultat est une maison à la charpente légère qui donne l’impression de faire partie de la nature, plutôt que d’un paysage. Figure montante de l’architecture au Japon, Yasuyuki Kitamura reçoit la reconnaissance du Jury international du GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN après avoir également reçu des éloges aux Asia Pacific Interior Design Awards et aux GOOD DESIGN Awards, au LOOP Awards et plus encore ! Here, the light roof’s deep eaves extend the interior and the nested nooks and crannies create an ambiguous space. A pair of openings visually take the outside into the center of the building, while a large skylight allows the tree greenery, sun warmth and sky blueness to penetrate through. The result is a light-hearted home that feels as if it is part of nature, rather than a landscape. A rising figure in architecture in Japan, Yasuyuki Kitamura receives the well-deserved recognition from the GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN International Jury after also receiving accolades at the Asia Pacific Interior Design Awards and GOOD DESIGN Awards, LOOP Awards and more prestigious worldwide contests. INSÉPARABLE S Il était une fois, deux jeunes étudiants à l’Université de Montréal. Malaka Ackaoui née en Égypte, dotée d’une enfance heureuse, et Vincent Asselin, né à l’Île-duGrand-Calumet au Québec, dont on disait aimablement qu’il aimait les plantes. Ces derniers discutaient allégrement autour d’une tasse de café. Mine de rien, Vincent demanda alors à Malaka : « Que fais-tu cet été ? » Elle de répondre… Je vais dans mon pays natal, l’Égypte. Vincent admits he has always dreamed of going… Malaka’s reaction is life-changing … she invites him, then and there, to join in on her adventure! And so begins, in the 80s, a lasting collaboration in landscape architecture and urban design and planning that has grown ever since…
SOLID FOUNDATIONS Malaka Ackaoui et Vincent Asselin cofondent alors, avec Ron et Sachi Williams, la firme Williams, Asselin, Ackaoui et associés en 1988, devenue depuis WAA Montréal. L’agence se spécialise en architecture de paysage, en design urbain et en urbanisme prônant beauté, imagination et écologie.
WHAT A JOURNEY! WAA+ now enjoys international recognition, particularly in Asia, with offices in Shanghai and Kuala Lumpur. A special shout out to the Samuel-de-Champlain Promenade in Quebec City, carried out in consortium, and China’s Yanan Zhong Lu Park, nicknamed the “green lung of Shanghai”. COMMENT FAIRE AFFAIRE AVEC LA CHINE L’histoire débute ainsi… Orientés par l’ex-maire de Montréal Pierre Bourque, ils postulent avec plusieurs autres firmes pour créer le méga parc Yanan Zhong Lu à Shanghai. D’emblée, on avise les candidats qu’on ne veut pas faire des « affaires » mais bien bâtir une amitié. Beyond budgets and aesthetics, WAA+ understands the above-all necessity of giving a meaning to the project. Et du sens, WAA+ en fournit et obtient le contrat ! Ce parc se compose de 28 hectares d’espaces verts et se situe au cœur de Shanghai. Ainsi, la conception du parc a été imaginée en référence à la relation historique de la ville avec la mer et la rivière Huang Pu. The concept of a narrative is introduced and represented by a body of water that crosses the site, reminiscent of an ancient river that once crossed the site.
ET PLUS ENCORE In the wake of Yanan Zhong Lu Park project in China, WAA+ carried out the development of Shanghai’s Xujiahui Park as well. With its 28 hectares, its greenery and its artificial lake, it has become a model throughout China.
ET PLUS ENCORE Let’s talk about the 7 Colors Park in Qujing, Yunnan, China, for a moment if you wish… WAA+ imagined an agricultural technology park, with an area of 375 hectares, a revolutionary experimental farm vibrant with colors that aims to be educational, sustainable and avant-garde, set in a modern and lush landscape. Exquisite!

RESPONSIBLE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
As per emblematic projects conceived on national turf, we cite Québec City’s Parliament Hill, carried out in consortium, and its Jean-Paul-L’Allier Garden, as well as the Montréal Biodôme’s natural habitats and the Botanical Garden’s First Nations garden, which exhibit their extraordinary ability to accomplish complex and large-scale mandates.
Le travail des deux architectes paysagistes est appuyé par une approche scientifique et guidé par des préoccupations environnementales. Leurs projets contribuent à rendre les villes plus saines, durables et écoresponsables. Pionniers dans l’intégration des phytotechnologies, ils ont réalisé, en 1990, à Montréal, l’aménagement de la plage du parc Jean-Drapeau (la plage Doré) en utilisant des bassins filtrants naturels… une façon de faire complètement novatrice à l’époque. In 2021, in collaboration with the Montreal Botanical Garden, the “Jardin des Racines aux Nuages” was officially unveiled. It will account for the Botanical Garden’s second phytotechnological station, set in a landscape that takes your breath away…
VINCENT’S CONVICTIONS « Au temps des changements climatiques, e paysage demeure une clé d’interprétation, d’appréciation et d’action capable d’enrichir les milieux de vie et faire face aux nouveaux enjeux de société. » Paroles de Vincent. Le Jardin Jean-Paul-l’Allier à Québec en est un bel exemple. Dans le cadre d’une des étapes du processus de revitalisation qu’a connu le quartier Saint-Roch à Québec, il fut créé dans le but de rendre le quartier plus vivant et attractif. Résultat : il a encouragé l’établissement de nombreuses entreprises et institutions ainsi que l’embellissement d’anciens édifices commerciaux et industriels.

UN COUPLE BRILLANT, PERFORMANT, HUMANISTE Un “team” qui a su garder, l’un pour l’autre, au travers de leur carrière rocambolesque, infiniment de respect, créer trois beaux enfants et, on m’assure…. Tout au long de ce parcours, on y a servi, par vents et marées, trois repas par jour. Diner with the kids … always.
