Inniscarra Community Centre is a vibrant local facility that has recently updated its heating system to run on efficient Calor LPG. The premises are economically kept warm through a newly-installed radiant heating system that allows the committee to provide a welcoming sporting venue while controlling fuel costs. The community centre and its 37 acres of playing fields are the focus of local sporting activity, used by over 400 GAA Sports people including rugby clubs, soccer players and pitch and putt enthusiasts. At the heart of the facility is its 30m x 20m sports hall with adjacent meeting rooms and kitchen. After 30 years’ use, the existing heaters for the hall were proving increasingly unreliable, and were expensive to run and maintain. Subject to damage from badly-aimed soccer balls, they were inefficient compared to modern heating equipment and required frequent repairs, with replacement parts increasingly expensive and difficult to source. Even when working, they weren’t up to the job, with heat confined to the areas immediately surrounding each appliance and with limited control. This meant committee members heating the hall before players arrived and having to turn the heaters off after the event – or incurring the cost with heaters left running.

The committee, led by Eamon Hegarty and Barry Murray, researched their options. Having quickly decided that both electricity and oil were too expensive, they opted to work with Calor LPG and Mark Eire, known gas and radiant heating specialists respectively. The two met with Calor’s Liam Dennehy and Mark Eire’s Michael Keane and explained their requirements: •T he new system had to be reliable and easy to control. •T he system had to be efficient and enable fuel cost savings. • Users of the hall to be able to easily turn the equipment on and off for their own use.

Liam and Michael recommended the installation of a new, integrated system using Calor LPG powered radiant tube heaters in the main hall and gas fired ceiling heaters in the meeting rooms and kitchen. •M ark gas fired radiant tube heater 13-38kw •H igh efficiency hi/low burner •Q uick heat up time • E asy zone control • F an flued system •T ime and temperature control •B all guard protection The result is an efficient, economical and controllable system that keeps the committee and community centre users happy. The new system is reliable, safer and heats up more quickly.

Each radiant tube heater has its own ‘cut off’ for added safety.

Radiant heating has a number of advantages: it is more efficient than baseboard heating and usually more efficient than forced-air heating because no energy is lost through ducts. The lack of moving air can also be advantageous to people with severe allergies. The ceramic burner provides maximum infra-red heat and the stainless steel rods increase the heat temperature efficiently. Radiant heaters are ideal for use in many applications including areas of high air filtration, high ceilings and specific spot heating such as churches, factories, sports halls, warehouses and workshops. Having the benefit of a coin meter means that users of the sports hall only pay for the heat that they require. They can select the temperature that they require initially and then turn down the output. As the radiant heaters provide heat almost instantly, there’s no need for the system to be running prior to use, this means that the system can be turned on and off effectively and efficiently and without any wastage.

A meter with a timer means that users of the Hall only pay for and use the heat that they require.

Calor is the optimum heating solution The combination of Calor’s expertise in the supply of LPG coupled with one of the country’s leading space heating specialists – ‘ Mark Eire’ has resulted in a tailored energy solution that is modern, efficient and economical. The new space heating system at Inniscarra Community Centre illustrates clearly how energy management can be achieved on an on-going basis. The use of a coin meter in the hall is particularly beneficial for the energy cost management of buildings of this nature, which have an irregular usage pattern and are used by a range of organisations. Calor LPG is a versatile fuel and can work with a range of energy-efficient appliances and low carbon technologies for additional savings. The committee at Inniscarra Community Centre are delighted with their new heating system and the energy savings it provides.
