President’s Message

Congratulations to AGC Georgia!

Brian Newsome, CEO Albion General Contractors, Inc. Sandy Springs, Ga. 2023-2024 President AGC Georgia

As the winner of AGC of America’s Large Chapter of the Year Award, we can celebrate the results of our hard work – not just in the past year but in all the years leading up to this. Our success is cumulative, and we can be very proud of our accomplishments. Everyone who contributed to our success can take pride in it. It would not have been possible without your vision, participation, great ideas and financial support. AGC Georgia’s greatest strength is the passion of its members to work together to build a better construction industry.

Looking back at this past year, I am impressed with the willingness of our membership and staff to try new ideas. We had a wonderful time during the new/old Winter Meeting. It got us out of the office and gave us the ability to interact with each other. Believe me – those relationships are worth their weight in gold. I can’t tell you how often I’ve relied on AGC Georgia colleagues for advice and support during my career.

This report hits the high points of the past year. We’ve grown as an association, and we’re stronger than we’ve ever been.

As I say goodbye to my duties as president, I challenge you to participate and contribute to AGC Georgia every chance you get. With your leadership, we’ll continue to be the best.

All the best,

AGC Georgia’s greatest strength is the passion of its members to work together to build a better construction industry.

CEO’s Message

Sometimes hard work pays off.

Every year in this report, we show how AGC Georgia helps its members build better companies, and through them, a better industry. We are proud that our efforts have been recognized with a national award.

For the third time, AGC of America has chosen AGC Georgia as its Large Chapter of the Year. This award recognizes our efforts to be the best as we deliver the products, services and advocacy that help member companies compete and win in increasingly difficult business environments.

AGC Georgia’s leaders charge my colleagues and me to translate your vision into action. We consistently look for new and innovative ways to better serve your needs, and we are elated to see the fruits of the association’s combined efforts recognized with this award.

We’ve prioritized visiting every member company each year by deploying a strong team in the field. We continue to address workforce issues with a variety of best-in-class programs and services, find opportunities to advocate effectively with state legislators and increase our commitment to helping members provide the safest job sites possible. Finally, our financial position has never been better with the help of sound guidance from member leaders.

This award means more than just recognition. It’s affirmation that we’re on the right track to meet your future challenges. I hope you will find joy in this recognition, too, as you read this report. It is my honor to celebrate with you and our professional team on all the great work we’ve done this past year!

Best,

We’ve prioritized visiting every member company each year by deploying a strong team in the field.

MARKETPLACE

While you attend interesting business sessions and reconnect with industry friends, your family can enjoy activities designed just for them. Members from more than 90 firms enjoyed the Omni at Amelia Island, Fla., in 2023.

MEMBERS FIRST NETWORKING EVENTS

More than 75 professionals are gathering at “Members First” networking events hosted at HOBNOB neighborhood pubs around metro Atlanta each quarter. The relaxed atmosphere provides great opportunities to make meaningful business connections.

A new Game Day atmosphere for the Marketplace at Sports & Social at The Battery received rave reviews. Most members wore their favorite team’s jersey, which provided for friendly rivalry banter and easy conversation starters among general contractors who wanted to connect with specialty contractors, suppliers and service providers on potential business opportunities.

FALL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

Members from all career paths find value in the Fall Leadership Conference’s intimate slate of two-day professional development sessions on topics such as the art of negotiating and building more influence. In October 2023, attendees enjoyed connecting on the Georgia coast at The Cloister.

20 24 5

AGC Georgia members and staff work throughout the year to educate legislators and agency officials about the construction industry. The relationships we build on behalf of our members make AGC Georgia a trusted advisor and a strong advocate for our industry.

Advocating for Construction

BUILDING GEORGIA LEGISLATIVE BREAKFAST

AGC Georgia hosted a Building Georgia Legislative Breakfast in January 2024. Many House and Senate members stopped by our event that took place in the Rotunda to meet with industry professionals interested in the legislative process. As the House of Representatives opened its day, a longtime friend of AGC Georgia and the construction industry, Rep. Matthew Gambill, provided a “shout out” to the association and its successful Skills Challenge series. Speaker of the House Jon Burns added comments about his recent participation in one of the events during the 2023 series and encouraged legislators to attend an event.

MEMBER INVOLVEMENT IN POLITICAL PROCESS

AGC Georgia members support the Political Action Committees of both AGC of America and AGC Georgia. On the national level, for the second time, our members were recognized at the AGC of America Annual Convention for having donated the most money of any chapter.

In Georgia, our members contributed more than $114,000 to help our governmental affairs team advocate for pro-business legislative initiatives during the 2024 session of the Georgia General Assembly.

The association sponsors two sporting clays tournaments to help fund its PAC. Together, these events attracted members from all over the state and raised over $40,000.

2024 LEGISLATIVE WINS

AGC Georgia’s efforts during the 2024 legislative session culminated in two decisive wins. The first was successfully passing SB 503 that revised sections of the general contractors’ licensing law to reflect current business practices. The second was receiving $1M in the state’s newly approved state budget to elevate construction curriculum needs in Georgia’s public schools.

FUNDING WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

INDUSTRY COLLABORATION

Each year, AGC Georgia represents the commercial construction industry in many initiatives that bring awareness to best practices and safety requirements to help keep the industry’s workforce safe. This year we celebrated Safe Digging Month in Georgia with Governor Brian Kemp and First Lady Marty Kemp.

Throughout the year, AGC Georgia shares its message on the importance of funding workforce development. Legislators and statewide officials, including Lt. Governor Burt Jones, Georgia Commissioner of Labor Bruce Thompson and House Speaker Jon Burns, attended our eight regional Skills Challenges in 2023.

20 24 7
In May 2024, AGC Georgia members and staff participated in a signing ceremony celebrating the successful passage of Senate Bill 503.

Safety is not just a priority; it is the foundation for every project. At AGC Georgia, we recognize that a commitment to fostering a culture of safety is reflected in our ongoing collaboration with industry regulators, innovative training programs, and the continuous improvement of safety protocols.

Elevating Safety

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS

On April 19, 2024, AGC Georgia became a partner in the Georgia Mental Health Alliance during a formal signing ceremony. The theme of the Alliance’s May 2024 Safety Stand Down was Nurturing the Mental Health of Georgia Workers. The Alliance is headlined by the OSHA Atlanta-West Area Office and the Georgia Department of Public Health along with several other strategic stakeholders.

Resources for AGC Georgia members to use for their stand downs are located on the AGC Georgia website at https://bit.ly/3vzzxlJ or by using the following QR Code.

SAFETY COMMITTEE & SHARED INTEREST GROUP

Safety professionals enjoy connecting at the AGC Georgia statewide Safety Committee and the Southeast Georgia Safety Shared Interest Group. These groups regularly meet for lunch to provide an opportunity for like-minded professionals to learn from one another and hear the latest trends and updates within the industry. Attendees share that they also appreciate building relationships with OSHA representatives who attend.

MENTAL HEALTH RADIO INTERVIEW

AGC Georgia joined the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to share mental health resources on a business radio podcast. AFSP is also a member of the Georgia Mental Health Alliance.

ASSOCIATED GENERAL CONTRACTORS OF GEORGIA, INC. 8

SAFETY COURSES

While AGC Georgia offers many in-seat courses at our Training Center in Cobb County, members benefit from several safety courses being offered with real-time instruction through a virtual or hybrid format. This allows participants from across the state to have access to high-level training without the need for travel.

AGC GEORGIA TO SPONSOR GEORGIA SAFETY CONFERENCE

For the first time, AGC Georgia will serve as a title sponsor of the Georgia Safety Conference, sharing the spotlight with Home Depot. In addition, AGC Georgia members are working to raise the funds necessary to bring high-profile keynote speakers to the conference.

AMERSON SAFETY AWARDS

AGC Georgia recognized more than 700 jobsite supervisors from both general and specialty contractor members with the Amerson Safety Awards in eight award ceremonies held around the state. These awards recognize the outstanding efforts jobsite supervisors make to keep member jobsites safe.

OSHA CONNECTION

AGC Georgia continues to build a strong relationship with industry regulators to enhance jobsite safety. By strengthening ties with the state’s OSHA offices—East, West, and Savannah—AGC Georgia is a valued resource for OSHA leadership when they need space for a variety of professional development sessions for their field team.

20 24 9

Successful professionals never stop learning, and AGC Georgia provides the best in education, networking and practical experience for individuals in member companies. Career development prepares leaders for the next level of their journey.

Promoting Professional Development

YOUNG LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

For over 28 years, YLP has sponsored a variety of programs to ready professionals who are under 40 years old for the next steps in their careers. Pictured below, members are participating in the course Practical Legal and Contract Fundamentals for Up-and-Coming Project Managers.

EXECUTIVE ALLIANCE

Executive Alliance is in its seventh year, and is surpassing all membership participation goals. With more than 70 senior level and C-suite professionals enrolled, the group hosts three leadership retreats each year with ample time for peer-to-peer learning and best practice exchange.

AGC GEORGIA TRAINING CENTER

The association hosts a variety of courses in the AGC Georgia Training Center in Atlanta. This facility provides space for in-person meetings, as well as virtual connections with participants across the state. Courses are in high demand, so early registration is recommended. In the above photo (A), participants are learning to read blueprints.

AGC Georgia serves as a trusted partner for many member companies who use the training center for their internal professional development sessions. Sherwin Williams is one of the most recent members to use the training center. (B)

SUPPORTING COLLEGIATE CM PROGRAMS

Throughout the year, AGC Georgia connects with three student chapters at our state’s collegiate construction management programs – Kennesaw State University, Georgia Tech and Georgia Southern. Each year, KSU relies on our Foundation to help coordinate and host a sporting clays fundraiser. Recently, staff members presented KSU’s Dr. Brian Moore a check for $50,000, the net proceeds from the event.

FALL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

Each year, the Fall Leadership Conference presents a two-day leadership program for members at all levels, across all career paths. In October 2023, nearly 100 industry professionals participated in a program taught by a hostage negotiator. Although few will negotiate hostage situations, all managers must mediate disagreements within their project teams and negotiate contracts. This program helped leaders hone their listening skills so they can become better communicators and negotiators.

CENTRAL GEORGIA LEADERSHIP COURSE

AGC Georgia members in Central Georgia wanted an in-depth leadership course offered in their region during fall 2023. Our education team coordinated a five-day program using the AGC Georgia Academy curriculum to meet their needs.

PARTICIPATION IN NATIONAL SEMINARS

AGC Georgia’s participation in AGC of America programs and services remains high. The chapter was recognized at the 2024 Annual Convention in San Diego because our member representation was in the top 10 of all states. AGC Georgia members also act as session leaders. Tonya Byrd of Gilbane Building Company (second from left) discusses her career path, and shares lessons learned and advice to fellow attendees during the Women Breaking Ground & Shaping the Future luncheon panel.

20 24 11

Attracting a skilled workforce is an ongoing challenge for the construction industry. AGC Georgia is actively working to bring new workers into the profession from a variety of backgrounds. Our programs demonstrate the satisfaction of skilled work in jobs that pay well and offer the opportunity to learn new skills at any age.

Winning Workforce Development

AGC Georgia’s single largest annual workforce development initiative is the Skills Challenge series. These regional events are designed to test the construction skills of high school students. They are organized in partnership with regional member contractors. The trade competitions are held in Augusta, Columbus, Gainesville, Macon, Marietta, Moultrie, Rome and Statesboro.

During the fall 2023 series, 1,166 student competitors and another 828 student observers from 104 schools participated in the eight events. In preparation for the competition, the industry raised over $550,000 in cash and in-kind donations. In the regions that received sponsorships and donations over and above the financial needs required to host the event, donors directed the surplus to participating schools to help instructors purchase classroom tools and materials.

WORKING WITH GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF LABOR

HOSTING CAREER DAYS AT HIGH SCHOOLS

AGC Georgia is highly involved with our state’s high school construction programs. We partner with industry when a school hosts a career day, and our representatives often stop by to speak to students during construction classes. We explain the direct path they have from high school to rewarding careers in construction.

CONSTRUCTION READY CAREEREXPO

In spring 2024, AGC Georgia signed a letter of commitment with the Georgia Department of Labor for their Pathway Home 5 program. Under this agreement, association members will serve on an Industry Advisory Board, representing the construction and building trades. The goal of the board is to uncover work opportunities for eligible incarcerated individuals in Georgia correctional facilities. Support for individuals afforded opportunities through this DOL program will begin with training services prior to release and will continue as they progress through re-entry programs.

Dozens of member firms exhibited at the 2024 Construction Ready CareerExpo – a two-day show that takes over the Georgia World Congress Center. Annually, more than 9,000 people attend, including 6,000 students from Georgia schools. They participate in hands-on activities highlighting the trades. During this same two-day event, the top three finishers from carpentry, electrical, masonry, plumbing and welding competitions at AGC Georgia regional Skills Challenges competed in the SkillsUSA Georgia State Leadership and Skills Conference with aspirations of winning first place at the state level.

Recently, MetroPower representatives provided a hands-on day of learning to students at Lee County High School. Students got handson experience at a variety of stations representing the types of work MetroPower does in the commercial construction sector.
