AGC Georgia Skills Challenge Series Delivers ‘Bragging Rights’ to Student Competitors and High Schools
The 2024 Associated General Contractors of Georgia (AGC Georgia) Skills Challenge series has once again proven to be a monumental success for the construction industry. The recent Skills Challenge series had notable gr owth in key areas—from fundraising and sponsorships to the number of competitors and spectators. It has become the high school football championship equivalent of competitions with career-establishing results for the
students and bragging rights fo r their high schools.
The 2024 series raised more funds across all markets than ever before, thanks to a record number of financial contributions and in-kind donations from industry partners. This past fall, 104 schools competed in the Skills Challenges with 1,196 student competitors and 970 student observers. With more than $600,000 in documented contributions to the AGC Georgia

Foundation, the association and our contractor partners enhanced the event experience for all student participants. After expenses are paid for regional events, leadership contributes a portion of proceeds to competing schools to support their classroom needs.
AGC Georgia Skills Challenges were held in eight regions across the state. Each provided a dynamic atmosphere for both competitors and observers. The events took place in:
• Augusta (East Georgia)
• Columbus (West Georgia)
• Gainesville (Northeast Georgia)
• Macon (Central Georgia)
• Marietta (Metro Atlanta)
• Moultrie (South + Southwest Georgia)
• Rome (Northwest Georgia)
• Statesboro (Southeast Georgia)
Core competitions that are offered at all eight regional events include:
Carpentry, Electrical, Masonry, Plumbing , and Welding. Skills Challenge leadership collaborated with SkillsUSA Georgia to also afford students the opportunity to compete in Cabinetmaking , TeamWorks and Welding Fabrication at these events. Winners from all of the above listed trades, who hold membership in SkillsUSA Georgia, advance to compete at SkillsUSA Georgia’s State Leadership & Skills Conference (SLSC) in February 2025.

At several regional competitions, students were also offered the opportunity to compete in Blueprint Reading , Heavy Equipment Operation, HVAC , Metal Studs/Drywall, Roofing , and Sheet Metal
These competitions were designed to showcase the skills that align with the construction industry’s critical workforce needs and to prepare students for a successful career in the field.
“We are incredibly proud of the impact the 2024 Skills Challenge series has had on high school students, their communities, and the industry as a whole,” said AGC Georgia CEO Mike Dunham. “This year, we saw more involvement from sponsors, more schools engaging with our events, and, most importantly, more students getting the hands-on experience they need to launch successful careers in construction. The future of our workforce looks bright, and the collaboration across the state to make this happen has been nothing short of inspiring.”
The series also saw a substantial increase in the number of middle school students who toured a regional event, providing a positive
shift toward engaging younger students in hands-on learning in the skilled trades. The events were further strengthened by the number of College & Career Academy programs, providing students with a pathway from high school into technical careers. In addition to the growth in participation and funding, the event series garnered significant attention from industry leaders and community advocates. Hundreds of supporters, including state legislators, city leadership, school administrators, and industry professionals, came together to celebrate the students’ achievements. These competitions not only provide a showcase of skills but also offer a unique platform for students to receive job offers directly from potential employers in the construction industry.
Incredible industry support for the 2024 series helps pave the way for tomorrow’s skilled talent to build rewarding careers in many different paths offered in construction.
Leadership is already working to plan a first-class series for the Fall of 2025! Check out the dates on the back cover and make plans to be a part of the next Skills Challenge series.
