A Cure

Friends, On our daughter Jennifer’s 6th birthday she was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). A highly aggressive brain tumor that currently has a 0% cure rate – it is terminal upon diagnosis. Less than four months later our first baby took her last breath in my arms. HER FIGHT CONTINUES Jennifer’s tumors were donated to Stanford and cell lines were created from them. That means she is still fighting . . . not the way we wanted her to, but she is still fighting and she needs our help. Because of Jennifer and the facts we learned – in other words, once it was our child that had an oncologist – we founded Unravel Pediatric Cancer. Thanks to the support and generosity of volunteers, individual families, and business partners across the United States, Unravel has been able to fund radically innovative and pivotal cancer research. CHANGE IS HAPPENING This year, we were able to see this hard work come to fruition with a huge breakthrough made possible only with money from Unravel and thanks to help from supporters like YOU! Dr. Michelle Monje of Stanford/Lucille Packard was able to use money granted to her through our unique funding system to try something new. Her team devised an experiment using targeted immunotherapy against children’s donated DIPG tumors implanted in mice . . . and the results were, as Dr. Monje says, “striking”. Or as this Mama and Dada would say “life changing” and “life saving”.

“Traditional funding funds proven science . . . Proven science for kids with DIPG means certain death. So let’s fund some new ideas . . . Some innovative ideas.“ LIBBY KRANZ

The tumors were largely eradicated and essentially gone. GONE! Dr. Monje says that there is more research to do to eradicate the few remaining cells and to administer a treatment that is safe for humans, and plans to hold a clinical trial. This trial is a true beacon of hope for families otherwise given none facing a disease that is universally fatal. And tonight, we’ll hear from Dr. Monje herself about this exciting treatment breakthrough – the first in over 60 years! YOU ARE THE DIFFERENCE By supporting the 2nd annual Glitter Gala you are supporting our daughter’s fight and sustaining the disruptive work Unravel Pediatric Cancer is doing so that together we can find a cure. Your support makes a huge difference . . . to our mission and to us. We are trying – our entire team is trying – and we know together we can “unravel” this brutal disease. In honor of the healthy kids in all of our lives.

Until there is a cure…

About Unravel Pediatric Cancer

will be matched!

Jennifer (JLK) was a beautiful little girl born with glitter in her veins. She sparkled from the inside out and brought out the sparkle in everybody she met. On her 6th birthday, Jennifer was diagnosed with DIPG. It was never a fair fight. Jennifer’s tumors were donated and a cell line created from them. She is part of finding a cure and her family and friends want to do their part, too. Unravel is how we are doing it, spreading knowledge and raising funds. Because knowledge is like glitter . . . it sticks with you and multiplies, and once we know better, we can do better. Unravel is a nonprofit organization working to spread knowledge about the grim realities of pediatric cancer and the devastating impact from the lack of funding. We supply the information, tools and support to individuals and communities that want to help create change – because good people want to do good things but sometimes they need help getting started. All monies raised by and for Unravel will go directly to the fight against pediatric cancer. In addition, Unravel partners with other nonprofits to strengthen our efforts. We do all of this with one goal in mind: we will unravel pediatric cancer. Tonight, at our second annual Glitter Gala, we invite you to join Jennifer’s friends and family and become members of the Unravel family. All monies raised by and for Unravel will go directly to the fight against pediatric cancer. And, because of the generosity of a private donor, every dollar raised this evening will be matched. Together, we can find the cure for pediatric cancer and give our beautiful children the chance at a full and happy life.

Dr. Michelle Monje Michelle Monje, MD, PhD, joined the faculty at Stanford University in 2011 as an Assistant Professor of Neurology and Neuro-Oncology. Following her undergraduate degree in biology at Vassar College, Dr. Monje received her MD and PhD in Neuroscience from Stanford University. She then completed her neurology residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School program. She subsequently returned to Stanford for a clinical fellowship in pediatric neurooncology and a postdoctoral fellowship. The scope of her research program encompasses the molecular determinants of neural precursor cell fate, neuronal-glial interactions, and the role of neural precursor cells in oncogenesis and repair mechanisms. As a practicing neurologist and neuro-oncologist, Dr. Monje is dedicated to understanding the neurodevelopmental origins of pediatric brain tumors and the neurological consequences of cancer treatment.
