A Global Call to Unity, Justice, and the Future: A Black History Month Message

From H.E. Dr. Macaulay Kalu, Secretary General of the African Union Sixth Region Global (AU6RG) & Chairman of The Economic Community of African Sixth Region (ECASR)

To my brothers and sisters across the African Diaspora—past, present, and future:

As we enter Black History Month, let us understand that this is more than a time for reflection—it is a call to action. Under the African Union’s theme, “Justice for Africans and Persons of African Descent through Reparation,” we confront the deep injustices of our past and present, while seizing the power to shape our future.

We must embrace an undeniable truth: there is no country called “Black.” We are from Mother Africa. Though history has dispersed us across continents, our roots remain unshaken. Our identity is not defined by borders or imposed labels but by our shared history, unbreakable culture, and unmatched strength.

For too long, systems of oppression have sought to divide us—knowing that as long as we are separated by geography, language, and ideology,

our collective power remains unrealized. But let the world take notice—our strength is in our unity. Whether from the Caribbean, North America, South America, Europe, or the African continent itself, we are one people, bound by destiny, and empowered by resilience.

This Black History Month, let us commit to healing ourselves, healing our divisions, and reclaiming our collective greatness.

From Resistance to Revolution: Honoring Our Legacy

Our journey has been one of struggle and triumph. We have moved from enslavement to empowerment, from oppression to liberation, from silence to global influence.

But let us not define our story only by the suffering we have endured—let us celebrate the brilliance we have contributed to the world. Our legacy is one of scientific advancement, cultural enrichment, economic innovation, and artistic mastery. The world as it exists today owes its progress to us.

From the birth of civilization in ancient Africa to trailblazing discoveries in medicine, mathematics, technology, and the arts, our people have shaped the course of human history. The wealth of nations has been built on our labor, intellect, and ingenuity. Though much of our story has been stolen, erased, or hidden, the truth remains immutable: we are the architects of progress, the pioneers of innovation, and the soul of civilization.

To the Next Generation: The Future is in Your Hands

To the young warriors of today—Generation Z and beyond— You are not only the future—you are the present. You are the visionaries, the innovators, the disruptors who will chart the next chapter of our global story. In a world that constantly tries to define you, define yourselves. Own your history. Embrace your identity. Stand firm in your truth.

Technology, knowledge, and platforms are now in your hands—use them to build, to educate, to empower, and to unify. Reject the false narratives that attempt to diminish your worth. You are descendants of kings and queens, warriors and scholars, inventors and revolutionaries.

The brilliance of your ancestors flows through your veins. Do not allow the world to divide you. Stand together. Work together. Rise together. The future belongs to those who claim it with conviction, purpose, and power.

Our Global Mission: A United Africa, A United People

The time has come for us to move beyond division and towards a global African renaissance. We must recognize our economic power, our cultural influence, and our ability to reshape the world on our own terms. We must build institutions that serve us, economies that empower us, and systems that protect us.

This Black History Month, let us do more than remember our past—let us take ownership of our future.

We honor our ancestors not just with words, but with action. We must uplift one another, invest in our communities, and build a legacy of strength, unity, and prosperity.

The time for division is over. The time for action is now.

Happy Black History Month. Let us rise—together.

ONE VOICE. ONE PEOPLE. ONE AFRICA.

With unity, resilience, and strength, H.E. Dr. Macaulay Kalu Secretary General, African Union Sixth Region Global (AU6RG)

Championing Equity: The Legal and Social Impact of Lavinia Latham

In the evolving landscape of justice, equity, and human rights, Lavinia Latham stands as a formidable figure redefining the intersection of law, advocacy, and corporate accountability. With a distinguished career spanning workplace investigations, human rights law, and employment law, she has fostered organizational change.

As the co-founder of Alphonse Latham LLP, Latham provides trauma-informed legal services that challenge discriminatory structures and advocate for inclusive work environments.

REDEFINING WORKPLACE EQUITY AND CORPORATE CULTURE

Latham’s work in employment law and corporate training extends beyond conventional legal compliance. She is a strategic architect in reshaping corporate cultures by addressing issues such as harassment, discrimination, bullying, and systemic inequities. Her training programs—delivered to government agencies, multinational corporations, and public sector institutions—integrate legal rigor with real-world applicability, ensuring that diversity and inclusion

are not merely theoretical aspirations but operational imperatives.

A distinctive aspect of Latham’s methodology is her ability to merge legal precision with dynamic engagement. Leveraging her background in the performing arts, she has pioneered a unique, interactive training approach, ensuring that participants not only understand legal obligations but internalize them in a way that drives sustainable change.

A LEADER IN HUMAN RIGHTS AND SYSTEMIC REFORM

Latham’s influence is not confined to boardrooms. She is a seasoned litigator and policy strategist, having successfully intervened in landmark Supreme Court cases and led comprehensive equity initiatives. Her tenure as Human Rights and Equity Advisor for the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) saw her establish the first Human Rights and Equity Office, where she spearheaded over 100 training sessions and mentored emerging Black legal professionals.

Her deep expertise in regulatory compliance ensures that institutions uphold obligations under the Occupational

THOUGHT LEADERSHIP AND INFLUENCE IN THE LEGAL SPHERE

As a sought-after public speaker and thought leader, Latham has positioned herself at the forefront of critical legal discourse. This Black History Month, she is slated to participate in high-profile engagements, including:

• Judging the Black Law Students Association’s Julius Alexander Moot.

Times, and YouTube channel, Lavinia Latham JD, as platforms for socio-legal analysis and advocacy. These outlets enable her to translate complex legal frameworks into accessible, thought-provoking insights, broadening public understanding of systemic inequities.

BUILDING A LEGACY OF JUSTICE AND EQUITY

Latham’s work represents a transformative shift in legal practice, where advocacy meets institutional reform. Her vision extends beyond individual case victories, aiming to reshape the structural frameworks of justice. Her firm, Alphonse Latham LLP, embodies this ethos, providing cutting-edge legal counsel while influencing broader social policies.

As we commemorate Black History Month, Afro Diaspora Pulse Magazine recognizes Lavinia Latham as a trailblazing force in the legal and human rights landscape. The Evolution of a Musical Icon

Music Spotlight: Tony Anthony – Celebrating Black Musical Excellence

From the sun-kissed island of St. Catherine, Jamaica, to the global reggae stage, Tony Anthony has cemented his status as one of the most influential reggae artists of his generation. Born Mark Bennett, Tony’s musical journey began at the age of 14, ignited by a lifechanging encounter with reggae legend Glen Washington. From that moment, music became his calling—a pursuit that would lead him from Jamaica to Canada, and ultimately, to the world stage.

Tony’s early years were defined by his work as a guitarist and vocalist with the awardwinning Crucial Vibes reggae band, where he shared stages with industry greats such as Jimmy Cliff, Dean Fraser, Freddie McGregor, Junior Reid, and Frankie Paul. His artistry flourished upon migrating to Canada in 1992, where he co-founded the reggae group Tatix. The group’s success was meteoric, earning multiple Canadian Reggae Music Awards and a JUNO Award nomination in 1996 for their acclaimed album, Time Bomb.

Beyond reggae, Tony demonstrated his versatility in soul music, joining After Dark, where he co-wrote and performed the chart-topping single Took Me for Granted. This experience further showcased his songwriting prowess, establishing him as a multi-faceted artist with an innate ability to blend reggae with soul and R&B influences.

INFLUENTIAL ALBUMS AND PERFORMANCES

Tony Anthony’s solo career officially launched in 2010 with the release of his independently produced album, Million Chance. The album’s lead singles, including Torn, Bad News, and Love You So Much, dominated reggae charts in Canada, Jamaica, Italy, Kenya, Gambia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Notably, the album remained on Italy’s reggae charts

for an entire year and secured Tony a JUNO Award nomination for Best Reggae Recording in 2011.

His remarkable contributions to reggae music were recognized that same year at the EME Awards in Jamaica, as well as at the Canadian Reggae Music Achievement Awards, where he took home multiple honors, including Best Male Vocalist and Best Reggae Album.

Tony continued his upward trajectory with the release of his 2012 EP, Blessed Love, produced in collaboration with Kemar “Flava” McGregor. Featuring the standout tracks Living in Glory and Settle Down, the project reaffirmed Tony’s ability to create music that resonates on a deeply emotional level.

His sophomore album, Live to the Fullest (2014), and his third studio effort, Then Now & Forever (2019), further solidified his legacy. Then Now & Forever earned the Best Reggae Album award at the 2019 Bright Star Awards in the UK, while hit singles like There Goes My Baby and That Wonderful Sound topped reggae charts in New York, Canada, and South Florida.

A truly international performer, Tony Anthony has captivated audiences across North America, the Caribbean, and Europe, making appearances at major festivals, including Serbia’s renowned Exit Festival. Youth Voices Unite: Embracing Our Heritage During Black History Month

A Message from the President of the Youth Diaspora Network: Mr. Dismas Kibungei

Kogo

As we step into Black History Month, we are reminded that our legacy is built on the resilience, innovation, and unyielding spirit of those who came before us. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” This question resonates deeply with today’s youth as we embrace our heritage and take up the mantle of leadership in shaping a more equitable future.

Young people have always been at the forefront of social change. From the Civil Rights Movement to modern advocacy for racial justice, economic empowerment, and technological innovation, youth voices have been catalysts for progress. As the President of the Youth Diaspora Network, I urge our generation to harness this moment— not just to remember history but to actively build upon it.

The Power of Youth in Driving Change Change has always been propelled by those bold enough to dream and determined enough to act. Across generations, young leaders have disrupted the status quo, challenging systems of oppression and reshaping societies for the better. Today’s youth are uniquely positioned to drive meaningful transformation through:

• Technology & Digital Activism: Leveraging social media and online platforms to raise awareness and organize for justice.

• Entrepreneurship & Economic Inclusion: Building businesses and initiatives that empower Black communities.

• Policy Advocacy: Engaging in political processes to influence laws that shape our lives.

• Education & Innovation: Creating spaces for knowledge-sharing and skills development.

The responsibility of upholding and advancing Black excellence is in our hands. Every young person today has the ability to be a leader, a disruptor, and a champion for progress.

Learning from Black Pioneers and Innovators

To understand where we are going, we must honor those who paved the way. Black pioneers and visionaries— from Dr. King to modern-day changemakers—have demonstrated what it means to lead with courage and conviction.

• Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – A symbol of nonviolent resistance and equality.

• Madam C.J. Walker – The first Black female self-made millionaire, proving that economic empowerment is vital.

• Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie – A literary icon amplifying African narratives globally.

• Mae Jemison – The first Black woman in space, breaking barriers in STEM. The lessons of these luminaries remind us that Black history is not confined to the past—it is continuously being written by each of us today.

Taking Action: How Young People Can Get Involved Commemorating Black History Month is not just about reflection—it’s about action. Here’s how young people can make a lasting impact:

1. Volunteer and Mentor – Give back to your community by mentoring younger students or supporting local organizations.

2. Support Black-Owned Businesses – Invest in economic empowerment by making conscious purchasing decisions.

3. Speak Up – Use your voice to challenge injustice and advocate for policies that drive equity.

4. Celebrate and Educate – Organize events, panel discussions, and storytelling sessions to amplify Black excellence.

This is our time to shape history. We are not just beneficiaries of past sacrifices; we are torchbearers for future generations. Let us rise to the challenge, united, empowered, and unwavering in our pursuit of justice and progress.

Carrying the Legacy Forward

In the words of Dr. King, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” As young leaders, let us take those steps with confidence, knowing that we stand on the shoulders of giants who dared to dream and act. The future is not something we await—it is something we create. Let us move forward with courage, vision, and an unbreakable commitment to uplifting our communities. Together, we are history in the making.

THE EVOLUTION OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH OVER TIME

Black History Month began as “Negro History Week” in 1926,

founded by historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson. His goal was to spotlight Black achievements that were often overlooked in mainstream history books. Over time, this week expanded into a full month of celebration and reflection.

1976 – Official Recognition – The U.S. government officially declared February as Black History Month, thanks to the advocacy of Black scholars and activists.

Global Expansion – Today, Black History Month is celebrated in Canada, the United Kingdom, and other parts of the world, highlighting the global influence of the African diaspora.

Modern Influence – Black History Month is no longer just about reflection—it’s a call to action. It’s a time to amplify Black voices, celebrate innovation, and address systemic injustices that still persist today.

As we honor Black history, let us remember that Black excellence is not just about the past—it is continuously being written by each of us today.

History is being written every day— let’s continue to celebrate, uplift, and empower.
