BREAKING BARRIERS IN MOTORSPORT AND BEYOND

Motorsport has long been dominated by men, with diversity and inclusivity often overlooked. However, Naomi Schiff is changing that narrative. A professional racing driver turned sports analyst, Schiff is paving the way for women and underrepresented communities in motorsport. Her journey is not just about personal success—it’s about reshaping the industry for future generations.

A LIFE IN THE FAST LANE

Born in Belgium to a Rwandan mother and Belgian father, Naomi Schiff discovered her passion for racing early. Like many great drivers, she started in karting, quickly demonstrating raw talent. However, success in motorsport requires more than skill—it demands financial backing, elite training, and sponsorships, areas where women and people of color often face barriers.

Despite the odds, Schiff carved out an impressive career, competing in Formula Renault, endurance racing, GT championships, and the W Series, a women-only championship providing female drivers with a competitive platform. Her breakthrough came in 2014 when she won the Clio Cup China Series, earning international recognition. She later competed in the KTM

SPORTS SPOTLIGHT

Naomi Schiff: Racing Beyond Limits

X-Bow GT4 championship, proving her versatility.

Yet, like many female drivers, Schiff faced the harsh reality of securing sustained sponsorship, which often dictates career longevity in motorsport. Instead of stepping away, she pivoted, transitioning from driver to sports analyst.

FROM COMPETITOR TO SPORTS ANALYST

In 2022, Schiff made history as an F1 analyst for Sky Sports, becoming one of the few Black women in a high-profile Formula 1 broadcasting role. Her shift to media was more than a career move—it was a cultural milestone. Motorsport commentary has long been dominated by male voices, making Schiff’s presence groundbreaking. With expertise, charisma, and in-depth racing knowledge, she quickly became a respected voice in motorsport media. However, visibility also brought criticism. As a trailblazer, Schiff faced skepticism from those who questioned her credentials—not based on merit, but on bias. Yet, as she has always done, she let her work speak for itself, proving she belongs on the global stage.

CHAMPIONING DIVERSITY IN MOTORSPORT

Motorsport still struggles with inclusivity:

• Only two women have ever competed in a Formula 1 Grand Prix.

• Female drivers continue to face challenges in securing sponsorship deals.

• Motorsport media remains largely male-dominated. Schiff is working to change this reality. As an advocate, she is: ✅ Encouraging young female racers to pursue motorsport careers. ✅Speaking on the importance of representation in racing. ✅ Using her platform to educate audiences on the sport’s technical aspects. She also plays a crucial role in the W Series, helping to showcase female talent and push for greater representation in top-tier competitions.

DRIVING CHANGE: THE LEGACY OF NAOMI SCHIFF

Schiff’s story is one of resilience, adaptability, and breaking barriers. From fighting for a seat on the track to commanding screens as an analyst, she is a force driving change in motorsport. Her impact goes beyond racing—she is challenging outdated norms and ensuring that motorsport evolves to reflect its global audience. As we celebrate International Women’s Month, Schiff stands as a powerful reminder that women are not just participants in motorsport— they are leaders, pioneers, and gamechangers.

Rose HandyCathy

A

Force For Impactful Transformations:

Rose Cathy Handy’s Remarkable Journey Of Resilience And Impact

A STORY OF TRIUMPH AGAINST ALL ODDS

In the heart of Mississauga, Ontario, a powerhouse of resilience and determination has been shaping the narrative of Black excellence in Canada. Rose Cathy Handy, a Cameroonianborn business and community leader, has defied the odds, turning her past struggles into stepping stones for an influential career. From launching a business out of a homeless shelter in 1997 to founding some of the most impactful initiatives for Black women in Canada, Handy’s journey is a testament to the unyielding power of perseverance. “I didn’t know my own strength until I found myself at the bottom,” Handy reflects. In her book Going from Homeless to CEO: The No Excuse Handbook, she shares the harrowing beginnings of her entrepreneurial

journey. Left with nothing but a newborn baby and an uncertain future, she refused to become another statistic. Instead, she carved out her own path, creating a consulting business that has since helped over 50,000 people secure employment and improve their lives.

BUILDING BRIDGES AND BREAKING BARRIERS

Handy’s work goes far beyond business—her mission is deeply rooted in community upliftment and global connectivity. One of her most profound accomplishments is the founding of Canada International Black Women Excellence (CIBWE), an initiative born from personal tragedy. When her sister, Esther Handy, a nurse, passed away

due to complications from HIV contracted through her selfless work, Rose Cathy transformed her grief into a powerful movement. “CIBWE was created to celebrate, support, and empower Black women from all walks of life,” she explains. “It has now grown into a global network with over 800 alumni.” The organization is marking its 10th anniversary this year, with major events scheduled, including a grand gala on October 25th at the Pearson Convention Centre. Additionally, she launched Connecture Canada, a nonprofit social enterprise designed to support immigrants and newcomers in their professional journeys. The initiative has already provided over 80 people with the experience, skills,

and confidence to thrive in the Canadian workforce. Another groundbreaking effort, The Braiding Academy, empowers women to transform their hairbraiding skills into sustainable careers, with many graduates now earning upwards of $5,000 per month.

STRENGTHENING THE AFRICA-DIASPORA CONNECTION

Handy is not just focused on local change—she’s also a dedicated bridge-builder between Africa and the diaspora. Having encountered the bureaucratic and logistical hurdles that hinder African and Canadian business relations, she decided to take action. In 2023, she launched Supply Africa, an annual event designed to facilitate trade and investment between Africa and Canada.

“The biggest missing piece in African trade is the diaspora,” Handy asserts. “There is so much potential if we can leverage our presence in both worlds.” The initiative is gaining traction, fostering crucial partnerships and paving the way for more effective collaborations.

LOOKING AHEAD: A FUTURE OF GLOBAL IMPACT

As she transitions into the next chapter of her life, Handy is poised for even greater influence. Now an empty nester, she has the freedom to travel globally, expanding the reach of Black Pearls International and other projects. She remains committed to fostering economic empowerment, particularly for women and marginalized communities, by turning skills and passions into wealth-building

opportunities.

With the upcoming CIBWE anniversary celebrations, AfriCEC, and Supply Africa set to make waves in the business world, Handy’s future looks brighter than ever. “I believe that true success is measured by how many people you bring up with you,” she says. If her track record is any indication, her impact will continue to ripple across continents for years to come.

As the crescent moon rises, millions of Muslims worldwide welcome Ramadan—a sacred period of fasting, prayer, and self-reflection. Beyond religious devotion, Ramadan fosters discipline, gratitude, and human connection, offering lessons for all.

THE ESSENCE OF RAMADAN

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, commemorates the first revelation of the Quran. It is observed through fasting from dawn (Suhoor) to sunset (Iftar), one of Islam’s Five Pillars.

• Devotion – A period of increased prayer and Quran recitation.

• Giving – Charity (Zakat, Sadaqah) takes on greater importance.

Through fasting and worship, Muslims seek purification, patience, and spiritual growth.

Fasting is more than abstaining from food; it cultivates self-discipline and humility.
