‘Blue Dahlia, Black Gold A Journey Into Angola’ - Daniel Metcalfe (Arrow Books/Random House)

By Ian Callagy Angola is Africa’s second biggest oil producing nation. This and other interesting facts are to be found throughout Daniel Metcalfe’s thought provoking travelogue.

He has previously written of his time living in Iran and Central Asia and now he turns his attention to another part of the world. In ‘Blue Dahlia…’ he gives a first-hand account of Angola, a former Portuguese colony.

Angola’s history and culture are brought to the fore here. However the violence and ongoing warring between the various military factions (FNLA, MPLA, and UNITA) is also covered. The chapters are long, yet rewarding to read.

Metcalfe begins his adventures in Sao Tome e Principe, also a former Portuguese colony.

The history of this part of Africa is a key feature in the book.

Queen Njinga, who was around in the 1600’s, we are told, had ‘many women in her army’. The Angolan monarch had a reputation for ‘ferocity in war’. She took many husbands (a male harem). She had ‘an insatiable sexual appetite’, the author notes. According to Metcalfe, Queen Njinga ‘forced her husband (she already had a good many) to dress in women’s clothing and sleep among her maids. If

he should be tempted by any of the women, he would be executed instantly.’

Reading this book one gets the impression that Metcalfe enjoys travelling. However the reader is made aware of the treacherous roads and questionable safety of Angola’s public transport. The author’s time in the country is divided up into three journeys: first he goes to Cuito Cuanavale in southern Angola, then to Saurimo in the east before his final expedition takes him to M’Bazza Kongo in the north.

Metcalfe’s visit to Cuito Cuanavale is spent near to unexploded ordinance (aka landmines). Apparently these explosives were planted all around tourist attractions.

This was done with the intention of scaring off anyone foolish enough to wander about the place aimlessly and to disrupt the tourism industry.

Thus all movement must be done with extreme care. Visitors cannot tour the area at their leisure for if they do they risk serious injury or death from the many landmines that pepper the landscape.

So who should read this book? It is obviously best suited for anyone intent on travelling to Angola, but it might also be of interest to the casual reader. The author describes his various tours around the interior of this Lusophone

nation and the manuscript runs to more than 300 pages. All the different cultural traditions in the country are written about here and this reader was increasingly fascinated by them.

Metcalfe whets the appetite for further information on Angola. Some readers of this book may even be inspired enough to book plane tickets to Luanda (Angola’s capital) to discover more.

It should be stressed that the author is not working for the country’s tourist board (or whatever the agency is known as).

This book is a warts and all profile of an enigmatic part of the world slowly emerging from a very violent past. If we in the West take it upon ourselves to engage more with different cultures we will benefit as a result. This is how racism can be smashed. Africans, in particular, have found it hard to gain respect due to unjust prejudice. Metcalfe has produced a body of work that will be a mighty weapon in the war against ignorance and bigotry. The more knowledge and understanding we accumulate in life the better the world will be. This book is crucial in gaining that knowledge.

The Hallelujah Diet; God’s Way to Ultimate Health The Halelujah Diet is a biblical based diet promoted by ‘The Hallelujah Acres Foundation’. The diet consists of mainly raw food and is predominantly vegetarian.

The founder of the diet, Rev. George Malkmus, now in his 60s, came to creating the diet as a result of some personal health problems he experienced while in his early 40s. He was diagnosed with colon cancer by the age of 42, a disease that had also lead to his mother’s passing.

As a multiethnic society consisting of about 300 or more ethnic groups, political permutations in Africa’s most populous country takes cognizance of this fact. One of Nigeria’s founding fathers, Obafemi Awolowo, in 1947, was quoted to have said that Nigeria was “a mere-geographical expression”. Although Nigeria seem to have moved beyond Awo’s (Obafemi Awolowo) expression but the hegemonic domination of the Hausa/ Fulani in the political space over the years cast a question mark on the candidature of Muhammadu Buhari.

Since the return to civil rule in 1999, and particularly the emergence of a president from the minority, in the person of Goodluck Jonathan, who is Ijaw, has set up a hurdle for a Fulani to assume tenancy of the Nigerian hot seat in Aso Rock. The prophet Isaiah says, “The spirit of the Lord has come upon me, for the Lord has anointed me. Saint Paul says, “All who are guided by the Spirit of God are called sons of God” (Rom. 8:14).

And he enjoins us not to suppress the spirit of God in us, to think before we do anything and to hold on to what is good and avoid every form of evil.

This is what it means to declare openly. Open declaration means acknowledgement of what we believe in. It means standing firm in the face of opposition. It means sticking out our heads for the gospel. It means shunning compromise. It means accepting martyrdom. It means understanding first of all who we are. it means proper self identification. For instance, if we look into the political circle, we notice sometimes that most people suffer from self delusion. Some politicians today don’t know themselves very well and don’t understand the ideologies they represent. If a politician understands himself well like John the Baptist, he/she would not betray his/ her religious belief in order to gain popular political acceptance.

This is a question that gives credence to our understanding of ourselves and our beliefs.

For us to give an accurate answer, we must open ourselves to the Spirit of God. It is the spirit that gives life (Cf. John 6:63). God’s spirit can give us proper insight of ourselves. It is the spirit that will spare us from delusion and false or imposed impressions of ourselves.

It is the spirit that will help us discern when others are projecting a wrong and deceptive image of us for their selfish interests and benefits. It is the spirit that will enable us to be courageous and bold; “the Spirit of Sonship that enables us to call God, Abba, Father”. May the Holy Spirit help us to bear eloquent witness to the faith we profess with our lives to the glory of God. Amen.
